SUCKER PUNCH SALLY’S AND BRUCE ROSSMEYER RESURRECT A CLASSIC– PHOENIX–November 25, 2008–Sucker Punch Sally’s announced the launch of the limited edition “Destination Duo” motorcycle, built exclusively for Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona. Equal parts old-school and modern, the Destination Duo bike celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first fully suspended American motorcycle, while capturing the bold, no nonsense style of a true Sucker Punch Sally’s one-off.

In partnership with motorcycle entrepreneur Bruce Rossmeyer, Sucker Punch Sally’s created 50 limited edition Destination Duo motorcycles. The motorcycle is nostalgically styled after the Duo glide while featuring the modern components standard on all Sucker Punch Sally’s models. Each “Destination Duo” includes a powerful reproduction Panheadtm power plant, 5 speed kick start transmission as well as an electric starter, original style 2 into 2 exhaust combination with rear suspension, optional buddy seat, and choice of a springer or hydraulic front-end.

“We’re excited to partner with Sucker Punch Sally’s on this bike,” said Bruce Rossmeyer, owner of Destination Daytona, the world’s largest dealership. “We wanted a bike that had a vintage feel and lived up to the demands of today’s riders. Who better to bring a classic back to life than the old-school experts themselves – Sucker Punch Sally’s.”

Each Destination Duo bike will have its own commemorative serial number, a numbered motor, a numbered, functional custom leather pogo seat and a limited edition print from renowned hotrod artist Sara Ray. The first Destination Duo bike with “serial number one” was auctioned off during Sturgis Bike Week 2008 as part of the first annual Legends Ride. CUSTOM MUSTANGS BUILT BY GEORGE BARRIS FOR SONNY AND CHER FEATURED STARS AT ?COLLECTOR CARS OF FORT LAUDERDALE? EVENT– RM Auctions will offer a star-studded line-up of significant automobiles in early 2009 as part of the highly anticipated ?Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale? auction event, presented by AutoNation. In addition to a magnificent collection of desirable classics, exotic sports cars and Detroit muscle cars, the February event will shine a spotlight on a series of celebrity cars including the Sonny and Cher Mustangs and the famous black Lamborghini Countach featured in the hit movie ?The Cannonball Run?.

Cher

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (November 25, 2008) ? Preeminent international auction house RM Auctions will bring a touch of Hollywood excitement to Fort Lauderdale, February 6th- 8th, 2009, as a series of celebrity cars cross the block at the highly anticipated Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale auction event, presented by AutoNation.

Regarded as South Florida?s premier collector car event, the annual three-day sale at the Greater Fort Lauderdale / Broward County Convention Center has offered numerous examples of celebrity cars over the years, from several versions of the Batmobile to the ?General Lee? Dodge Charger from the movie Dukes of Hazard. The 2009 event will continue the grand tradition as a host of celebrity cars are presented for auction alongside a magnificent line-up of desirable classics, exotic sports cars and Detroit muscle cars.

?Over the years our Fort Lauderdale event has carved a reputation as South Florida?s preeminent classic car event thanks to its ability to draw a wide range of motor cars and collectors from across the continent,? said RM?s Donnie Gould, a 30-year veteran of the classic car industry.

?With over 450 cars set to cross the block, our 2009 event ? proudly presented by AutoNation ? is set to be another exciting motoring weekend and cater to every automotive taste,? he added.

Two of the star attractions of the Fort Lauderdale event will be a matching pair of ?his and hers? 1966 Ford Mustang Convertibles. Plucked from the San Jose assembly line, the Ford Motor Company commissioned the legendary George Barris to personalize these cars to reflect the flamboyant onstage personas of sixties entertainment icons, Sonny and Cher. Sonny?s car was finished in Murano Gold Pearl, adorned by dark brown side panel and with an orange and gold fade-away treatment over the wheel wells and grille openings. In contrast, Cher?s Mustang featured a hot pink pearl finish, blended with candy red, deep red side panels and a matching fade-away treatment. Inside, Sonny?s Mustang was upholstered with Bobcat fur and antique buffed leather trimmed with rustic suede, while Cher?s car featured white Ermine fur and black antique Scottish leather upholstery, trimmed in hot pink suede. Both cars were fitted with opulent three-inch long Mouton fur carpeting, Sonny?s in gold and Cher?s in hot pink.

Upon completion, the cars were used for publicity purposes before going on to appear in Sonny and Cher?s only feature-length movie, Good Times. Following the movie?s wrap, they toured the car show circuit before they were returned for the use of Sonny and Cher and later reverted to George Barris. They have since changed hands and have undergone a recent cosmetic restoration to return to their original 1966 condition. Their offering at the Fort Lauderdale event marks the first time they have come to market in 25 years.

Another famous Barris creation set for RM?s Fort Lauderdale auction block is the 1969 Volkswagen ?Fire Bug?. Built by George Barris and Dick Dean in the mid-seventies as a parade and promotional vehicle for the LA Fire Department, the Fire Bug was based on a mid-1960s VW Microbus. The big budget project included flames, pin striping and artwork by Bob Bond. After retiring from the fire department, the Barris Fire Bug went on to play a starring role in the Saturday morning TV show The Banana Splits.

The curtain is also set to rise at RM?s Fort Lauderdale event on the famous jet black 1980 Lamborghini LP400S ?Cannonball Run? Countach, one of the world?s most iconic supercars. In 1981, this actual car was chosen to lead an all star line-up for the hit movie, The Cannonball Run, a madcap adventure about an illegal race of characters across America. Directed by veteran Hollywood stuntman Hal Needham and written by legendary automotive journalist Brock Yates, the movie starred Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett, Jackie Chan, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Roger Moore, Peter Fonda and the vivacious Adrienne Barbeau and Tara Buckman as the Lamborghini team. The screenplay was based on Yates’ actual series of real-life Cannonball Run adventures while he was editor at Car & Driver magazine. A rare two-owner car from new, this example has been passionately maintained and the star of several Hawaiian Tropic sponsored events.

The Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale event will be closely followed by RM?s annual Automobiles of Amelia Island auction at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Hotel on March 14th, 2009.

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION FROM SPAIN–Hi, my name is Luciano and I’m living in Palma de Mallorca (Spain). I send ton you a photo of my motorcycle, buyed some months ago. I have some questions…

1) Is my motorcycle a Harley Davidson FXR 1989? In negative case…which motorcycle is?
2) When can I found information about the construction of the motorcycle used in the film “Harley Davidson & Marlboro Man” like photos and references?

–Luciano.

Yes you have an FXR. I?m not sure of the year. Let me know what the engine or frame numbers say. Regarding the H-D and Marlboro man bike, I?m looking for a connection. I know the guy who built one. SCOTT JACOBS RELEASE MARILYN MONROE GEM–Although the studio has pretty much inundated you with offers recently (not the norm) and we certainly appreciate your great response, the need to release this Marilyn Monroe gem around the holidays is compelling. The work itself is festive and may just be the perfect gift for Christmas for you or a loved one. In fact, we have not released a new Marilyn in over eight months. This painting was a very time consuming (over one year to completion) commissioned work so no stone was left unturned. I think this is one of the best Marilyn?s yet.

Only sixty limited canvases of this image exist and many of those are already spoken for by previous Marilyn collectors. If you like this one I would not wait as this genre is some of Scott?s most sought after imagery. Here you go: Title: She Loves Me?She Loves Me Not Size: 33? x 17.25? (add 8? ea. way for frame) Price: $1550 unframed $1950 framed. Deadline for Christmas delivery: Dec. 10 (also for any other framed pieces). Even if you don?t order we would love to have your opinion on this one?..thanks and have a wonderful holiday.

BREATHALIZERS AVAILABLE FOR TESTING FROM RADIO SHACK–Strange times, but this little unit could save any brother up to ten grand and a lot of pain and suffering from a D.U.I. charge. Now you can buy one of these puppies at radio shack and test yourself before driving or riding.

We discovered this from a band member who plays gigs all over LA and most of the time it’s a party, but he checks himself before driving home. It there’s a problem he takes a walk, walks to a coffee shop or just chills out until he’s good to go.

I found out recently that 50 percent of all motorcycle accidents are alcohol involved. We need to watch that number.

BIKERNET METRIC UPDATE–My screams have not gone unnoticed! Recently I have been telling folks to send me their “stuff” and it is starting to trickle in. I have recently received an amateur photo shoot of a cool little bob job Yamaha VStar 1100. It is rough but tough and I like it. It shows the heart and soul of motorcycle building….lots of trial and error, some elbow grease and a love to be on two wheels.

Also, I recently an interview with Chuck of Rocky Mountain Customs, the painter who won the Bikernet Brouhaha in Sturgis. It took some talking but there is great stuff coming from his shop including a blown, nitrous Kawi that he is painting. He has the pics of the build, the paint and a pretty lady. I will post that shortly and follow the rest of the build and its success on the track.

Lastly, the AFT Customs’ Girls modeling agency is starting the “Lowla” bike build right now based on a Honda VTX1300. I have some prelim pics that NO-ONE else does! Jim the owner of AFT Customs will oversee the build and update me on the progress. Jim is the winner of Bikernet’s Brouhaha and will be bringing this bike to Sturgis in 2009 for the show again.

Just so you know, Jim builds Honda’s normally since that is what he specializes in. In fact, he is one of the first 500 factory Honda certified mechanics in the US! I thought that was pretty cool. He is certainly no one trick pony. As you recall, he won the 2008 World Championship in Sturgis this year with Yamaha Roadstar. The bike is now featured on the Bikernet Metric site with beautiful Melanie. Great shots of a great bike…from the camera of famed hot rod photographer Mike Chase…….enough with the plugs……..keep readin’ or get out there and ride!!!

Love ride

California Bike Week & Love Ride 25Why I keep returning year after year–Well, if bigger is better, than the Love Ride keeps getting better and better. And if there is one thing most women worldwide can agree on, it is that bigger usually IS better. Like with closet space and stuff. When the Love Ride began 25 years ago, it was a small event raising much needed charity funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Many of us who attend the Love Ride annually came to know Chris Houle, the Love Ride’s ambassador for more than a decade. Chris lived an inspirational life fighting for awareness about his disease. Sadly, Chris died of complications due to muscular dystrophy just before his 25th birthday in 2006.

And now this year, the Love Ride celebrates its silver anniversary and 25th birthday. In those 25 years, the Love Ride has undergone many changes. The best of them being that, as the event continues to grow, it has helped not only the MDA, but a multitude of other non-profit organizations that benefit from the donations raised by the more than 20,000 bikers who participate each year. The Love Ride brings in nearly a million dollars in charity funds each year, and has raised $21 million since its inception.

Love ride2
Our author, Betsy.

People from all over the world come to ride in what is still being recognized as the world’s largest one-day motorcycle fundraiser — although now the Love Ride is considered to be the grand finale to a three-day weekend full of events being called California Bike Week. And with the change in destination from Castaic Lake to the new Pomona Fairplex Fairgrounds, the way has been paved for the Love Ride to grow over the next 25 years. It is the hope of Love Ride founder and chairman, Oliver Shokouh, that during the next 25 years the event continues to grow as it has the last 25. Oliver’s continued commitment is to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate. By changing the event’s location to accommodate its growth, the opportunity has been laid for what was once a one-day ride to an annual California event that could compete with big bike rallies in Sturgis and Daytona.

Although the new destination makes for a short 50-mile freeway ride, the change is good for a couple of reasons. Interstate 210 to Pomona is much less crowded with cars than I-5 north to Castaic, and makes what used to be a frenzied hour of splitting lanes a much more safe and organized parade of 20,000 motorcycles. Not to mention that getting into the huge Fairplex parking lot is easily expedited, as opposed to the chaos of parking on hillsides at Castaic. So what you miss in the scenic beauty of Castaic Lake, you make up for in better organization, safer riding and more room. In addition to changing the venue, the day the Love Ride is held has been moved up a couple of weeks to late October instead of mid-November.

I look forward to many more years of the Love Ride and California Bike Week.

FBI File Shows Knievel’s Alleged Evil Side–Federal Authorities Nearly Charged Daredevil In Beatings.

MIAMI — Evel Knievel never denied his scrapes with the law — the late motorcycle daredevil often reveled in them. But even he objected to a 1970s FBI investigation of whether he was involved in a string of beatings. According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, the federal government came close to charging Knievel, who in turn threatened to sue the FBI for alleging he was connected to a crime syndicate. Neither followed through. Knievel, who died last November in Clearwater, Fla., repeatedly denied his involvement to both investigators and victims, according to the documents.

“Knievel stated that he was not responsible for what just happened to (name redacted) and that he had no control over the ‘thing”‘ according to one phone conversation recounted in an FBI interview. Knievel, immortalized in the Smithsonian Institution as “America’s Legendary Daredevil,” donned red, white and blue for his death-defying stunts.

He had a knack for outrageous yarns and claimed to have been a swindler, a safe cracker and a holdup man.

His most well-known run-in with the law was a 1977 attack on movie studio executive Shelly Saltman, whom the daredevil beat with a baseball bat in the parking lot of 20th Century Fox. Saltman promoted Knievel’s infamous attempt to jump Idaho’s Snake River Canyon and then wrote a book about the experience, angering Knievel by portraying him as “an alcoholic, a pill addict, an anti-Semite and an immoral person.”

Knievel was sentenced to six months in jail and Saltman won a $12.75 million judgment, but never collected. Saltman did not return a phone message recently to discuss the FBI file.

Knievel’s file shows investigators believed he was involved with other violent acts — an attack in a Kansas City hotel room and a vicious beating in San Francisco. All were allegedly carried out by Knievel associates, according to subjects quoted in the file. Authorities also looked into an alleged threat made in Phoenix, but could find no information for the case.

The investigation bounced between field offices in Miami, Chicago and California. Knievel’s business associates were interviewed, his phone records examined. Of the 202 pages of Knievel’s 290-page file released to the AP, some were heavily redacted, with identities, interviews and contact information excluded. The names of victims were not released, though some details of their experiences were.

One man told agents he received a threatening phone call, and shortly after was beaten by a Knievel associate who left him hospitalized. The man was interviewed by the FBI, but could remember his assailant’s black loafers better than his facial features.

He told the AP he wants to remain anonymous because he had moved on from the attack and into a career not associated with stunt jumping. He said the FBI wanted to know if he could identify his attacker.

“They gave me mug shots at one point in time and I couldn’t pick him out,” he said. “It was a dark room, he had dark glasses on him. All I know is he was big. I could describe his shoes better than anything.”

Bob Gill, a competitor of Knievel’s during the 1970s, said he was part of a confrontation associated with Knievel, but the daredevil later apologized and denied his involvement and the two became friends. Gill was not interviewed by the FBI, but said his run-in mirrored others described in the file. He declined to elaborate.

“Evel’s never done any wrong besides that one little incident,” Gill said. “And he’s made up for it 1,000 times.”

TEXAS BECOMES A ROADBLOCK BATTLEGROUND– Interest groups battle over roadblocks ahead of the 2009 Texas legislative session.

Interest groups are pressuring Texas lawmakers to authorize the use of roadblocks ahead of their return for the 2009 legislative session. The practice of setting up barricades on roads to stop and interrogate motorists suspected of no wrongdoing has been unlawful since a 1994 state appeals court decision ruled that a “politically accountable governing body at the state level” must first approve their use. Now Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has scheduled an October 23 deadline for briefs to decide the Texas Public Safety Commission’s request to bypass this requirement and approve roadblocks on its own authority.

Texas is one of fewer than a dozen states that currently prohibit warrantless searches of motorists. For that reason, the new president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Laura Dean-Mooney, made convincing the Texas legislature of the need for roadblocks a high priority for her organization.

“I have a special place in my heart for Texas,” Mooney said upon taking the top job in July. “But so much more must be done. Passing interlocks for all drunk driving offenders and sobriety checkpoints to deter drunk driving would be a great start.”

MADD came close to a legislative victory in April 2007 when the state Senate voted unanimously to establish the waterborne equivalent of a roadblock. The proposed “boating safety checkpoints” would have allowed police to pull over and question all recreational boaters on lakes within the state. The legislation would also have given police the discretion to use force to take a boater’s blood to determine sobriety. The measure died when the state House declined to act on the bill.

The alcoholic beverage industry feels threatened by the chilling effect such draconian measures would have on sales of beer and wine at restaurants.

“By calling for roadblocks and mandating breathalyzers for first time offenders, regardless of their BAC level, MADD is ignoring the root cause of today’s drunk driving problem — hard core alcohol abusers,” American Beverage Institute Managing Director Sarah Longwell said.”Because they are highly visible by design and publicized in advance, roadblocks are all too easily avoided by the chronic alcohol abusers who comprise the core of today’s drunk driving problem. That leaves adults who enjoyed a glass of wine with dinner, a beer at a ball game, or a champagne toast at a wedding to be harassed at checkpoints.”

The possibility of innocent drivers being arrested at such checkpoints is increased by a state police policy that gives troopers an incentive to accuse motorists of drunk driving. In a June meeting of the Public Safety Commission, a twenty-seven year veteran of the state police testified about drunk driving (DWI) arrest quotas.

“Also, my second item, some of the troopers that have earned vacation and putting in requests for vacation are being told that their vacation request will not be considered unless they are getting a certain amount of DWIs,” retired Trooper Coy Lorance testified.

The commission responded by attempting to get around the prohibition on drunk driving roadblocks by referring to them as “license checks.” The group put in the request to the attorney general last month after receiving an inconvenient response from the state police chief.

“Mr. Chairman, you had asked at the meeting prior to… prepare a document that would relate the legal responses to conducting driver’s license, registration, and insurance checkpoints,” Department of Public Safety Director Thomas Davis testified in June. “I think it’s the recommendation of general counsel that without the authority being granted by a governance is that we’re not able to do that legally.”

In a 2005 decision, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court found that 99.29 percent of drivers stopped at state roadblocks were innocent. The results also showed that it took 53 percent more effort to make an arrest with a roadblock than to use traditional roving patroltechniques. Nonetheless, the court upheld the validity of roadblocks

We may find ourselves needing to hammer our state legislators to stop thisbefore we go into session. Contact your State Senator and your State Repand ask them to send a letter to Attorney General Greg Abbott to not allowthis to happen.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY STUDY FINDING, NEW SCIENTIFIC ELEMENT FOUND TO BE HEAVIEST KNOWN TO MAN– Lawrence Livermore Laboratories has discovered the heaviest element yet known to science.

The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete.

Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2- 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentiums mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron?s promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.

When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons

THANKSGIVING BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS–INCREDIBLE GLOBAL COVERAGE AND NOT EVEN DRUNK YET!

SamLead

Happy Thanksgiving!

Interesting times we’re living through, with the economy and such. It’s just another one of life’s adventures. We still have a tremendous amount to be thankful for. I want to thank everyone who works around Bikernet for all their hard work and constant efforts to keep us cranking. I want to thank all our sponsors for supporting Bikernet over ten years. I want to thank all the brothers and sisters in this industry for making this a non-stop fun lifestyle. I get a rush constantly from a new part I see, a bike I’m building, a custom creation that blows my mind or a story about another wild adventure ride. I

Ialso want to say thanks to all the riders out their who devote their lives to keeping us free. I hope that this year we can enhance their recognition through a group of aftermarket leaders and hopefully with the help of SEMA and the MIC. It will be my job to let you know what’s going on with legislation and the freedom fighters who struggle for us daily. Got the word today from Senator John Brueggeman, of Montana, who works for SEMA, that someone in New York is trying to pass a ban on straight pipes. Hell, they’ve never been legal.

Let’s hit the news. It’s going to be a monster:

IRS AUDITS BIKERNET’S GRANDPA–The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the IRS office

The IRS auditor was not surprised when Grandpa showed up with his attorney.

The auditor said, ‘Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, which you explain by saying that you win money gambling. I’m not sure the IRS finds that believable.’

I’m a great gambler, and I can prove it,’ says Grandpa. ‘How about a demonstration?’

The auditor thinks for a moment and said, ‘Okay. Go ahead..’

Grandpa says, ‘I’ll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.’

The auditor thinks a moment and says, ‘It’s a bet.’

Grandpa removes his glass eye and bites it.

The auditor’s jaw drops.

Grandpa says, ‘Now, I’ll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite my other eye.’

Now the auditor can tell Grandpa isn’t blind, so he takes the bet.

Grandpa removes his dentures and bites his good eye.

The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand, with Grandpa’s attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous.

‘Want to go double or nothing?’ Grandpa asks.

‘I’ll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and pee into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a dropanywhere in between.’

The auditor, now twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there’s no way this old guy could possibly manage that stunt,so he agrees again.

Grandpa stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, but although he strains mightily, he can’t make the stream reach the wastebasket onthe other side, so he pretty much urinates all over the auditor’s desk.

The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win.

But Grandpa’s attorney moans and puts his head in his hands.

‘Are you okay?’ the auditor asks.

‘Not really,’ says the attorney.

‘This morning, when Grandpa told me he’d been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty-five thousand dollars that he could come in here andpee all over your desk, and that you’d be happy about it.’

BIKERNET ECONOMIC LESSON–A man owned a small contracting business in Salem, Oregon. The Oregon Wage &Hours Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him.

‘I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,’ demanded the agent.

‘Well,’ replied the owner, ‘there’s my framer who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The sider has been here for 18 months, and I pay him $550 per week plus free room and board.

Then there’s the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally.’

‘That’s the guy I want to talk to…the half-wit,’ says the agent.

‘That would be me,’ replied the owner.

NEW HOPE IN THE FIGHT TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING–Highlighting a gigantic shift in United States policy, President-elect Barack Obama spoke to the Bi-Partisan Governors Global Climate Summit in Los Angeles, California via video on November 18th, 2008, reiterating his commitment to marking a new chapter in America’s leadership on global warming.

A few excerpts from his remarks: “Few challenges facing America – and the world – are more urgent than combating climate change. The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear. Sea levels are rising. Coastlines are shrinking. We’ve seen record drought, spreading famine, and storms that are growing stronger with each passing hurricane season. Climate change and our dependence on foreign oil, if left unaddressed, will continue to weaken our economy and threaten our national security…. My presidency will mark a new chapter in America’s leadership on climate change that will strengthen our security and create millions of new jobs in the process.”

4 CORNERS RALLY ILLEGALLY CLOSED–It?s Jeff Kraus. I was invited to your shop to be interviewed for Sturgis Rider Live for the film I directed about the 4 Corners Rally in the Rockies being illegally closed in 2006 ? ?Showdown in Durango.? Hupy & Abraham, a law firm that sponsors Charlie?s, show ordered 100 copies of the film after being retained to represent the promoters for the debacle in Greyslake, Illinois in May. After 17 years & as a show of protest, Buzz Walneck withdrew his event from the same venue as a result of the discriminatory actions that shut this event down. The political climate for bikers in southern Colorado has not improved either; it?s much worse.

We have had our own experiences, too. In March our rally was derailed by the Chief of Police in Yreka, CA. After 14 months of careful planning, four days of national act entertainment booked & written endorsements from the County Sheriff, Executive Director of the Yreka Chamber of Commerce, the Yreka fairground?s CEO (6 yr lease), the Chief of Police, Brian Bowles, refused to grant our liquor permit unless I ?ponied up with six figures (extortion)!

When I told him it was too late to cancel the rally, he asked me if I was threatening him (which was not my intent) & told me he would call in 250 additional officers, aerial surveillance & write the bikers citations.

?Citations? For what?? I asked. He hung up on me. Subsequently, we cancelled the event & gave everyone their money back (patrons, vendors & sponsors ? I also cancelled the outdoor display of the Traveling Wall & an appearance from Arlen Ness? road crew & custom bike display. I have never quit anything in my life. Subsequently the Shasta Salute to America Motorcycle Rally was moved an hour away to a town with a beautiful fairground.

The Shasta Salute to America Motorcycle Rally did take place ? see pg 66 November Thunder Press. The theme of our event was to pay tribute to our troops & celebrate our freedom to ride (anywhere we want) thanks to our soldiers. We have been invited to return to Tulelake to produce our Rally for ?09 / Labor Day weekend & have written endorsements from their City Council, Mayor and Chief of Police & the Fair Board

South Bay Biker Productions, is corporate sponsors of a Reseda, CA based military charity, Operation Gratitude. ?OPGrat? has sent over 375K CARE packages to our troops in Iraq & Afghanistan. Their founder, who ran a booth & spoke at our event, asked me to help OPGrat pursue getting a motorcycle donated for their 500Kth package recipient for Christmas 2009. Arlen Ness has offered to come to our event next year & I have approached them to donate a bike. Australian Clubs Under Attack

Clubs1

The South Australian government describes their newly passed Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Act 2008 as, “An Act to provide for the making of declarations and orders for the purpose of disrupting and restricting the activities of criminal organisations, their members and associates; to make related amendments to the Bail Act 1985, the Criminal Law Consolidation Act 1935, the Freedom of Information Act 1991 and the Summary Offences Act 1953; and for other purposes.”

Otherwise known as the “Anti-Bikie” law, this legislation has aroused much concern and many protests from concerned members of the public, the motorcycle-riding community, politicians of various ilks, civil libertarians, the Law Society as well as many members of the legal profession.

Of course the mainstream media haven’t helped with their “Shock! Horror!” approach to reporting this issue. The Adelaide Advertiser typified this in an article earlier this year titled, “Bikies invited into Parliament” which said in part that, “Democrats MP Sandra Kanck has ‘plunged herself into another controversy’ by inviting bikies to a seminar at Parliament House. Members of the Gypsy Jokers, Finks and Hells Angels were among guests at a briefing yesterday on new laws being introduced by the State Government to combat outlaw motorcycle clubs. Under the laws South Australians who have contact with bikies at least six times a year will face a minimum of five years in jail.

The Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Bill 2007 also will enable the Police Commissioner, Mal Hyde, to obtain orders from the Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, declaring bikie gangs illegal. Anyone involved with the gangs, or who has any contact with them, can then be served with orders restricting their movements based on police intelligence, which must remain secret.”

In a very reasonable response Ms Kanck defended the presence of the Finks, Gypsy Jokers and Hells Angels members, saying people who were affected by legislation should be consulted.

Prominent criminal defence lawyer Craig Caldicott, expressed the views of many South Australians when he said that the new laws were an attempt “to use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. They are basically overkill,” he said. “It is the only piece of legislation in Australia aimed at a group of people who wear leather jackets.”

The Bar Association and the Law Society say aspects of the Serious Organised Crime Control Bill undermine the presumption of innocence and are not fair. The bill enables the Attorney-General or Police Commissioner to declare organisations illegal, without allowing any challenge or appeal. The Bar Association and Law Society say the legislation removes fundamental civil and political rights.

Speaking to a Senate Committee, Mac Hays from the Longriders Christian Motor Cycle Club expressed the views of many motorcyclists when he said, “It is my belief and the belief of many I have spoken with, that there has been a carefully orchestrated plan by those in power to manipulate the media to demonize “bikies” in order to create a climate of fear among the public so that when the “bikie bill” was introduced – which incidentally, as we would all be aware does not mention the words Bikie or motorcycle club – the public would naively accept it in the misguided belief that it would keep them safe from the “bikie menace.” Those very “bikies” that our premier Mr Rann has described on public record as “pond scum” and “all thieves and murderers.”

John Goldberg (President of the Law Society of SA) wrote a clear explanation outlining some very real concerns about the bill; “How the bikie legislation fails all of us” which was published in The Advertiser on 4/11/2008. “Benjamin Franklin said: ‘Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety’ Now that you know where I stand, let me tell you a little more about the anti-bikie legislation. First, it is modelled on laws against terrorism; laws which are still quite controversial even when they are applied to alleged terrorists. The anti-bikie legislation, called the Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Act, applies those laws to crimes other than terrorism.

clubs2

In addition, it applies not just to outlaw bikie gangs but to any group characterised as involved in serious and organised crime. People who may be innocent can, under this legislation, have the following essential liberties undermined or removed:

PRESUMPTION of innocence.
ABILITY to know the detail of the allegations against them.
RIGHT to silence.
ABILITY to challenge the accusations against them in court.
FREEDOM of assembly.
RIGHT to a trial by jury.
NEED for proof beyond reasonable doubt.

The legislation will lead to otherwise ordinary and innocent behaviour, such as associating with other people or being on premises, becoming a criminal offence with a maximum jail term of five years. And the reason for this conduct becoming a crime can be kept secret from the person affected if it is classified as “criminal intelligence'”.

And who gets to apply this law which takes away so many fundamental liberties? The answer is the attorney-general of the day. Well, what is wrong with trusting the liberty of the individual to whoever the government of the day appoints as its attorney-general?

Quite a lot. Unlike a judge, the attorney-general is not appointed for a fixed term, he has to maintain favour with the party that put him there and he has to contest an election every now and again and prove his worth to his electorate. If the government has a strong law-and-order agenda, he will want to be seen to be making a contribution to it. The attorney-general is, after all, a politician.

Let me give you one more quote, this time from John Adams: ‘There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.’ But what of the argument that the people being targeted are organised criminals and this is the only way to bring them under control?

If that is seriously put forward, why did we give murderer Bevan von Einem a fair trial, or the notorious serial killer Ivan Milat? Well, without a trial you have not determined whether or not they are guilty and without a trial the community can never be sure that the right person has been locked up. If we are to abandon that fundamental rule for bikies, where does it end?

clubs3

Should we torture people to get the names of their accomplices? Should we do what the Thai government is alleged to have done back in 2003 and set up police hit squads to slaughter hundreds people suspected of being criminals? I have no problem with being tough on crime, provided that our essential liberties are protected. If they are not, we risk throwing out the baby with the bathwater.”

Residents of other states and territories needn’t think that they are immune from this as there are apparently moves afoot to make this legislation apply throughout Australia.

To read the Act in its entirety go to: http://www.legislation.sa.gov.au/LZ/C/A/SERIOUS%20AND%20ORGANISED%20CRIME%20(CONTROL)%20ACT%202008.aspx and select either the .pdf or RTF format.

Post script: Action is already beginning to be taken with the first Application for Declared Organization sent to the South Australian Attorney General on December 16th, 2008.

GOVERNMENT SEIZES CLUB?S COLORSDozens of Mongols Motorcycle Club members were arrested under a federal racketeering indictment in a multi-state sting operation on October 21, but even before a single case has gone to trial federal prosecutors have succeeded in getting a court order stripping the club of their trademarked logo. Mongols members can no longer wear patches or other items bearing the club?s insignia following what appears to be an unprecedented injunction barring members, their family and associates from wearing, licensing, selling or distributing the logo.

“If a Mongol is wearing a vest or jacket bearing the Mongols patch, that item is pursuant to seizure based on this order,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Welk.

?This was an=2 0ingenious move to try and strip a club of its identity under the guise of civil asset forfeiture,? said Richard M. Lester, founder of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), ?but it sets an extremely dangerous precedent if allowed to stand. All the government would have to do is show that a few members were involved in criminal activity and they could take away your name and logo, and it could affect any organization from ABATE to HOG to the Elks.?

Explaining the implications and ramifications of the federal action, Sam Hochberg, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) Attorney for Oregon, said the reasoning behind the court order was ?The government made a showing to the federal judge that they have a substantial likelihood of prevailing on the merits of the criminal case, including the RICO charge, which is required to get this sort of order. If the club loses on the criminal/RICO charges, they could be subject to the civil forfeiture laws — the same laws that allow the government to take away cars and houses from drug dealers as ?instruments of the crime?. Here, the government argued that the patch has value, and since they think they’ll ultimately be entitled to a civil forfeiture, they want to hold on to that asset, the patch. That was the basis for their legal argument, though publicly and to the press the ATF has admitted they’re doing this to break the back of the club.?

According to Lester, who also helped to found the Confederations of Clubs across the U.S. and Canada to help organized patch holder clubs to fight for their legal rights, NCOM will be working with the COCs to help overturn the patch seizure by hiring an expert on trademark and civil liberties law.

FUEL CONSERVATION CONTINUES DESPITE FALLING PRICESPrices at the pump have fallen to half the high watermark of $4 per gallon, begging the question whether the driving and lifestyle changes people made in the past year to conserve gas will stick.

Americans drove 15 billion fewer miles this past August than in August 2007, says the Federal Highway Administration, the largest one-month decline since figures have been collected. An increasing number are using public transportation. Car sales are at their lowest national levels since 1991, and the federal government projects U.S. fuel consumption will decline this year by the largest amount since 1980.

OPEC has cut its output in an attempt to stabilize prices, but the global recession is pushing down worldwide demand even further.

Many drivers have said despite the recent decline in gas prices, they have indefinitely changed their habits such as running fewer errands, combining trips, driving slower?and riding more motorcycles instead of SUVs. Although sales of cruiser models have fallen with the unstable economy, small motorcycles and scooters have posted record sales because of their mileage ratings.

And even though new motorcycle sales have flattened recently, sales have picked up in other areas, including clothing, merchandise and other accessories, parts and service. Bike owners who might have traded in their older motorcycles during better times are opting to keep them and put more money toward service and maintenance, reflecting a national trend.

Whether Americans will continue to be more fuel conscious depends largely on the economy, because despite the price of gasoline there?s still a need to conserve money.

Lepera Banner

MORE TOLL ROADS COMINGFederal transportation officials are lobbying state governments to convert their freeways into toll roads, and expect the new administration to continue supporting public private partnership (PPP) initiatives. The Federal Highway Administration has announced the creation of a new office to pursue more toll roads in the future, and placed the new Office of Innovative Program Delivery atop their organizational chart to emphasize its primary place within the federal transportation department.

“The Director of Innovative Program Delivery provides advice, guidance, and research support related to tolling and pricing initiatives and administers tolling authorities,” outgoing Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters wrote. “[The office also] promotes the development and use of techniques associated with providing transportation in terms of innovative and non-traditional funding sources, innovative contractual processes, and changing roles and responsibilities involved in designing, constructing, operating, maintaining, financing, obtaining, and procuring highway facilities.”

These innovative and non-traditional funding mechanisms have caused concern among local and federal representatives in the wake of the ongoing financial crisis, but such efforts appear to have the support of President-elect Barack Obama who has supported similar measures.

A key component of Obama?s agenda includes providing $60 billion for infrastructure projects with “a preference for projects which leverage private financing, including public-private partnerships.” Moreover, Senator Obama in March endorsed New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s idea to charge a $9 toll on cars and a $22 toll for trucks that enter downtown Manhattan during working hours.

PUSHING PARKING PROTECTIONSIt used to be bad enough to find someone sitting on your motorcycle, but with more people riding bikes, and parking them, an increasing urban problem appears to be with drivers moving two-wheelers out of their way to make room to park in congested downtown areas. To top it off, they seem to be wheeling them into No Parking zones or onto sidewalks where it?s illegal to park.

Recognizing this troublesome trend, the city of Seattle, Washington recently enacted an ordinance making it illegal to move another person?s vehicle without their knowledge or consent. Ordinance Number 122761 passed unanimously on August 4 to ?prohibit a person from moving a motor vehicle not lawfully under his or her control when the motor vehicle is occupying a parking stall or space on City property.?

In addition to a hefty fine, police also warn that, ?If you damage it, you?d be liable.?

HONDA DEMONSTRATES V2V MOTORCYCLE SAFETY TECHNOLOGYIn its efforts to improve safety for everyone, especially vulnerable road users, Honda’s leading motorcycle to car communication system was recently demonstrated for the first time in Germany at the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium. The Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) System generates warnings to riders and drivers of other vehicles by continuous exchange of positioning data from satellite GPS sources. This is particularly relevant as road users approach intersections, alerting them to other vehicles that are potentially on a collision course, allowing avoi dance maneuvers. Research data shows that the majority of accidents involving a motorcycle are caused by perception failures and this system will reduce these failures.

The majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by the simple failure of other motorists to detect the presence of a motorcycle on the road until it is too late, or to correctly assess its distance and speed. V2V communication rapidly relays information in a simple and concise manner, which supports motorists’ and bikers’ recognition processes. Information including position, direction and vehicle dynamics coordinates is exchanged between vehicles.

Motorcycle riders can safely receive warnings about vehicles near them on a Head-up Indicator Display, and can receive information through an in-helmet audio system, neither requiring them to take their eyes off the road. Drivers can view information on the status of cars and motorcycles in their vicinity and receive warnings on, for example, their navigation system display.

Honda?s life-saving V2V System is interoperable and facilitates communication with vehicles from 8 other manufacturers.

TOUGHER NEW MOTORCYCLE LAWS DOWN UNDERFinding the freedom of an open road on two-wheels could be a little more difficult for some would-be Australian motorcycle enthusiasts next year, as Queensland authorities get tougher on new riders. As with Europe, some Australian legislators are looking to tighten restrictions on novice riders of all ages. The changes taking effect next July in Queensland include restricting new riders to less powerful motorcycles and prohibit them from consuming any alcohol while riding.

Queensland’s Premier Anna Bligh told Parliament that novice riders will have to carry “P” plates, there will be a ban on pillion passengers and there will be a zero-alcohol limit for all ages of learners.

In the past only new riders under the age of twenty-five faced zero-alcohol restrictions, with those older allowed to have up to the legal 0.05 limit. Also, the law that restricted new riders to motorcycles of 250cc engine size will be expanded to an approved list that takes power-to-weight ratio into account.

“Given the significant increase in fatalities from motorcycle crashes, it’s clear that we need to rethink our licensing system,” Bligh said, “The evidence that many older people are starting to ride motorcycles and their inexperience is contributing to serious injuries and fatalities, we can’t ignore that.”

New riders face the restrictions for one year before going onto an unrestricted license allowing them to ride any motorcycle and fall under the regular traffic laws.

England

POLICE ORGANIZATION CALLS FOR BIKE BAN, POWER LIMITSThe Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) in the U.K. has called for motorcycling to be banned from certain areas of the country in evidence it submitted to the recent House of Commons Transport Select Committee report, entitled “Ending the Scandal of Complacency: Road Safety beyond 2010”.

The ACPO submission said: “There is a need for radical thinking in respect of motorcycles, including consideration of engine cap ability and the creation of protection zones where all motorcycles other than those specifically permitted, would be prohibited.” This apparent call for power restrictions on motorcycles and their prohibition in some areas of the country flies in the face of substantial independent evidence that there is no correlation between a motorcycle’s power output and its likelihood of being involved in an accident.

A further inaccuracy presented to the committee by ACPO is that, “Production machines are readily available for use on our roads with top speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour.” In fact there are no production bikes capable of more than 200mph, even without the motorcycle industry’s voluntary 186mph speed limitation.

?That ACPO can present such nonsense brings into question its suitability as a source of reliable information for the Transport Committee,? criticized the Telegraph newspaper, adding that the law enforcement organization?s testimony regarding mo torcycles is ?demonstrably unreliable.?

WEIRD NEWS: STUNT VIDEO BUSTS BIKERA biker in England was brought down by the Internet and his own video evidence was sentenced for speeding and performing stunts on his motorcycle. The 28-year old rider became the talk of the British press for being arrested after he posted video footage of himself riding a motorcycle at more than 130 miles per hour as well as performing stunts on the popular video site, YouTube.

Last year similar events took place in Spain when a group of riders videotaped and posted their speeding rides between two small towns. They were also convicted by authorities who used20the footage posted on YouTube.

Dateline: November 17 , 2008Hollister, California , USA:The City Council Voted to no longer allows bikers to bring their reported 7 MILLION PLUS DOLLARS and drop it off in Hollister the week of their annual Hollister Motorcycle Rally.

The reported 92,000 plus bikers will have to find somewhere else to spend their hard earned cash. Most cities in this economy would open up their arms and enjoy a three-day (SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR) shot in the arm.

The City Council voted to no longer allow motorcycles to gather and use their town for the Rally. With that said, why would any motorcyclist or friend of the scooters ever spend one red cent inside the county line of San Benito.

Check out BIKERNET each week. We can direct you to plenty of towns and events that are not prejudice and take cash from anybody that has it to pass out. In closing, “The Birthplace of the American Biker” has just turned it’s back on the fine fellowship that put that little town on the map.

I told you, we should buy a town a name it Motoville or move to Primm, Nevada.–Bandit

New D&D Performance Exhaust for 2009 Harley-Davidson Touring Models More Power & Economy for 2009 Baggers – A D&D and Zipper’s Package– November 20, 2008, Ft. Worth, TX – FRESH from our R&D department at our Horsepower Headquarters in Ft. Worth , TX , D&D Performance Enterprises has completed the BOSS kit, an economy and performance package for the 2009 Kings of the American Road, the Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycles.

America’s long-distance hardcore riders require greater performance to get up and around cars and trucks as well as better fuel economy to stretch the gasoline dollar.

D&D knows the cost of ownership is never going to decline so they have spent the extra time and effort to develop products that deliver on economy and performance, which is regulated by the rider’s wrist.

The BOSS kit is spec’d for the 2009 Twin Cam 96 V-Twin engine and new chassis on the Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle. The BOSS kit includes our 2009 slip-ons and a Zipper’s high-flow air cleaner.

When we developed the BOSS kit we had 2 things in mind, power and aesthetics. Through extensive dyno testing, we were able to increase the power across the RPM range. We also paid close attention to the fitment of these pipes. As most touring riders know it is also about looks and the stock pipes were not up to snuff, they were not aligned correctly with the rear of the bike.

The engineers at D&D said “Get it straight Jack” and that’s exactly what we did. These pipes are correctly aligned with the back of the bike for an improved aesthetic appearance.

In developing the kit we worked with Zipper’s Performance in opening up the engine to make it breath better, utilizing their factory-replacement HiFlow air cleaners. These air cleaners are 100-percent washable, pleated filter elements.

Enthusiasts are reporting The BOSS kit is delivering an additional 8-9 horsepower increase. Zipper’s air cleaner and D&D’s Slip-ons delivers the biggest bang for your economy and performance buck and is a clear industry leader.

With just a wrench and a ratchet, every Harley-Davidson touring owner can be up and running within an hour. And this kit is designed so that you don’t need a tuner upgrade. Just wrench and ride.

D&D slip-ons come in show-quality chrome or powder coated midnight black. The dyno chart and dyno video with audio clip for both the BOSS Slip-on exhaust pipe is located on the website in the catalog section at www.danddexhaust.com. D&D is available at your local dealer or directly from headquarters at 817-834-8961.

In 1972 David Rash could not find the exhaust pipe he needed for his race bike. He knew that the proper exhaust for his engine configuration would give him an edge over his competition so he fabricated one himself. Thirty years and 250,000 pipes later D&D Performance Exhaust systems are some of the leading performance motorcycle exhaust systems in the world.

D&D Performance Exhausts are available from Custom Chrome dealers nationwide or from the factory at 817-834-8961, www.danddexhaust.com.

S&S X-WEDGE SERVICE MANUAL AVAILABLE–S&S Cycle has released the X-Wedge Service Manual, for service technicians and owners of X-Wedge motors. The X-Wedge, which takes its name from its cross-wedge combustion chambers, is a 56-degree V-twin which uses fuel injection to help make it EPA compliant.

XWEDGE

“Getting the X-Wedge manual done was a real challenge for the whole team,” said Howard Kelly, S&S Communications and Marketing Manager. “In the past we have had years and years of data to look back on and recognize what information a technician would need, but this is a brand-new engine; we only had the data from testing and development. With a group effort from the entire X-Wedge development team, led by Jeff Bailey, an incredible amount of information was able to make it to the pages.”

DEPARTMENT AND $2,000 TO STURGIS POLICE DEPARTMENT RESERVES–STURGIS, S.D. ? The Sturgis Rally Department is pleased to announce that the 6th Annual Sturgis Mayor?s Ride, held Monday, August 4th, during the 2008 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, raised $18,000 for the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and $2,000 for the Sturgis Police Department Reserves.

The Mayor?s Ride was created to be a funding source for the Sturgis Fire Department, a volunteer organization which plays a vital role in the Rally by not only keeping fire emergencies under control but also responding to accident scenes and other medical emergencies. This year Mayor Maury LaRue chose to also fund another volunteer group that assists the Sturgis Police Department, Sturgis Police Department Reserves for their participation in South Dakota Special Olympics.

2008 Mayor?s Ride participants were joined by United States Secretary of Transportation, Mary Peters, South Dakota Governor, Mike Rounds, was scheduled to attend, but due to inclement weather was unable to, the Director of Jack?s Daniel?s Lynchburg Homeplace, Steve May, South Dakota Office of Tourism Director, Melissa Bump, numerous state legislators, Sturgis Mayor Maury LaRue and local city council members on an escorted ride through some of the Black Hill?s most spectacular scenery on two lane roads. The group was welcomed by Superintendent Gerard Baker at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where they were treated to a private cultural performance and ended the afternoon at a sponsored lunch at Custer State Park Game Lodge.

?The Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department would like to again thank the Mayor and the Mayor?s Ride sponsors and participants for their continued support,? said Fire Chief Ron Koan. ?The funds generated annually from the Mayor?s Ride allows the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department to purchase equipment and provide professional volunteer firefighting services, which otherwise would be funded by taxpayers dollars. Because of events such as the Mayor?s Ride and other department sanctioned fund raising efforts, the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and the City of Sturgis, have been able to hold the actual tax based cost of fire protection in our community to less than $22.00 per resident annually.?

?The Sturgis Police Department Reserves are honored to be considered for the support of the Mayor?s Ride, as they are strictly volunteers and this assistance will support the South Dakota Special Olympics,? said Police Chief Jim Bush.

?This is just another way that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally benefits the community,? stated Mayor LaRue. ?We ask a great deal of our volunteer firefighters year round, but especially during the Rally and the weeks leading up to it. With the help of our sponsors and the generosity of the people who participated in the Mayor?s Ride this year, we were able to once again give the fire department and the police department reserves much needed funding.?

The 6th Annual Mayor’s Ride was supported by presenting sponsor, Jack Daniel’s, with additional sponsorship support from Ford Motor Company – Built Ford Tough, Black Hills Harley-Davidson, Black Hills Power, Budweiser, Alltel Wireless, Coca-Cola, Pak Mail, Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building, South Dakota Pork Producers – Pork the Other White Meat, Rosenbauer Firefighting Technology, Wheeled Coach and Knology.

The 7th Annual Mayor?s Ride will be held on Monday, August 3rd, 2009. Riders interested in participating can contact the Sturgis Rally Department at 605.720.0800, log onto the Sturgis Rally website www.sturgismotorcyclerally.com or email info@sturgismotorcyclerally.com

RIVAS WINS LAS VEGAS?TWO S&S-POWERED BIKES IN TOP THREE POSITIONS OF SERIES– LA CROSSE, WI (November 17, 2008) S&S Cycle (www.sscycle.com) is pleased to announce great news from the final round of NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Racing in Las Vegas, Nevada. The news starts with Chris Rivas and the G2 Motorsports/Drag Specialties/S&S Cycle team winning the event?their third in five races! This win represents the fourth of the year for the team out of 17 events.

?After the Chicago race?basically the hometown track for S&S?the win made me feel like we were clicking? said Chris Rivas. ?It was an honor for me to be the rider associated with S&S during the 50th Anniversary year, and with George Smith as a mentor?and as a friend?I couldn?t have felt better. George has taught me so much about racing and life, he cares for people in a sport that is really cutthroat? concluded Rivas.

Going into this race the championship was up for grabs for three riders?Chris Rivas, Matt Smith and Eddie Krawiec. Both Rivas and Smith are independents riding S&S 160ci Billet Pro Stock powered bikes with the support of sponsors and Krawiec is part of the two rider, factory sponsored H-D organization. All four days of the event left everyone wondering who would take the number one plate going into the 2009 season. In the end it turned out to be Krawiec?who actually had not won a single race all season?leading Rivas by just five points and Smith by 20, making it as close as it could be and putting two S&S powered bikes in the top three spots.

ss race team

The final race of the season came down to Rivas against Krawiec, with Rivas using a borrowed electrical system from Valerie Thompson. G2 crew Chief George Smith felt that the system on their bike was not working correctly and Thompson?s team stepped up to help, lending out their entire system and laptop. Rivas made the most of the loan by winning the race and event with the quickest and fastest run of the event, a 6.929 at 191.95mph to Krawiec?s 7.009 at 190.46.

?First, Chris was wired into the lights this weekend, he couldn?t have ridden better? said George Smith. ?Then, when Valerie Thompson and her team lent us their ignition system, we were sure we had what it took.? Smith went on to say, ?I really wanted to add another win and dedicate it to Fred Fox at Drag Specialties, without his support for the last three years we wouldn?t have had this chance. At the end of the last run, we had the win and a great end to a terrific season.?

?I would like to congratulate the S&S powered teams for another successful racing season. The performance of the G2/Drag Specialties Team was very impressive during the later half of the season to win the events that they did,? said Michael Scaletta, S&S Business Development Director.

It was a terrific season of racing, with the championship up for grabs all year long, perhaps the closest season yet in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Racing. Be sure to get the 2009 schedule from www.NHRA.com soon and mark your calendar to see some of the best racing action in the world.

HERE’S WHAT KRIS REVIS SAID ABOUT VALERIE THOMPSON RECENTLY–

After having clinched his first NHRA POWERade world championship a round earlier, Krawiec’s next goal was not to become just the second driver in NHRA history to win a championship without winning a national event (Rob Bruins won the 1979 Top Fuel crown in just such a fashion), but Rivas had other ideas, bashing out low e.t. of the meet at 6.929 in the Pro Stock Motorcycle final to defeat Krawiec’s 7.00 and earn his fourth win of the season aboard the Drag Specialties Buell. The victory lifted Rivas into second place in the points, just five markers behind Krawiec.

“We’re still not really sure where that 6.92 came from. I knew that we had left together, and by the time I plugged 3rd gear, he had completely dropped back; I thought he had broken,” said Rivas, who won three of the five Pro Stock Motorcycle events in the Countdown playoffs. “We hit the rev limiter at the finish line, so I knew it either had been a really good run or that it had broken the transmission. We owe a great gratitude to Valerie Thompson, who let us take her fuel-injection system and wiring harness off of her Buell and let us use her laptop to tune it.

MILLION MILE MOTORCYCLISTS STOPS AT BIKERNET HEADQUARTERS– Dave Zien reaches 992,769 miles on November 17, 2008: just over 7,000 miles to go.

Former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien is still pounding out the miles in continued Iron Butt rides. After a short setback due to some mechanical problems, he was back on the road again after thanking Territorial Harley-Davidson of Yuma, Arizona for all of their help. Since then, he rode two more 50 CC circuits, San Diego, California to Jacksonville, Florida, and back again. Then yesterday, November 17th, he was up in North Hollywood. He back tracked to Long Beach to meet with Bikernet guru and former Easyriders Editor, Keith “Bandit” Ball.

dave kb

He still had enough energy to plan on riding up to Copperopolis, California to visit Charlie Brechtel and his Biker Inner Circle studios. My cousin, Dennis Sanfilippo, was going to put him up at his lake house after wining and dining him. I haven’t heard from Dave, Charlie or Dennis yet to confirm he made it up there or that he’s even awake yet. But, when he got to North Hollywood, he had 992,769 miles on his 1991 FXRT.

He plans on riding back to Milwaukee by Thursday (another 2,200 miles). At that point he will announce his plans to put the bike up for the winter, relatively speaking because we know he’ll continue to ride (just not those insane distances, averaging 1,000 per day) and bring it out again for the beginning of the 2009 riding season, possibly early or mid-April. That’s when he’ll finally turn the odometer over to the 1 million miles mark.

We’re looking at doing that at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, with lots of fan fare and a nice landing party. Three Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame members will ride in that landing day parade; Zien, John “Rogue” Herlihy, photo journalist and Old School Freedom Fighter, and Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo, Founder of ABATE of Wisconsin and BOLT.

Senator Zien is dedicating the achievement of reaching his goal to Attorney Mike Hupy for all of his assistance and guidance and for everything he does for the motorcycle community. He is also dedicating this record to Accident Scene Management, Inc, and Vicki Sanfelipo, for her untiring efforts to educate the bikers of America and save lives.

Visit www.hupy.com and look for Dave Zien’s mileage tracker for updates on his mileage. Click on the photo and jump to the story about his ride records and his Ride Journal. That’s where you’ll find the details of the landing party location and date. Keep visiting, even through the winter, because Dave will continue to ride and send in his stories. You can also visit www.accidentscene.net to read about his recent adventures in Virginia when he came upon a serious motor vehicle crash involving trucks and a semi. His training from Accident Scene Management kicked in immediately and that is why he wants to dedicate a portion of his ride to ASMI.

CUSTOM CHROME ANNOUNCES PERMANENT REVTECH PRICE REDUCTIONS–In what the company is emphasizing “is not a sale, but a permanent price reduction”, Custom Chrome has announced lower dealer pricing across the board on the RevTech engines and driveline products produced exclusively for them by parent company DAE-IL Corporation.

The lower pricing program was announced on November 7th and was “effective immediately” on its full range of RevTech engines and transmissions, including its Euro 3 and EPA certified products.

The firm’s statement said that “this reduction is designed to achieve maximum value for the product line without compromising its margin value to the selling dealer.”Steve Veltri, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, said “this is a worldwide effort and will be put into effect by both Custom Chrome and Custom Chrome Europe.”

“This is not an increase in complete engine inventory alone. We have undertaken a substantial investment to ensure transmissions, belt drives, replacement and service items are available to support these products in the dealerships and on the street,” said Mohr.

BIKERNET NEWS TOP STORIES–BIKERS START SEMA COUNCIL TO SUPPORT INDUSTRY, BIKERNET NOISE STUDY KEEPS WYOMING FREE AND TECH QUESTION ANSWERED

Lead for news
Another terrific shot from the Cole Foster calendar.

Hey,

Crazy days between the economy, the top three auto makers and what’s next? I’m going to jump off here, because this news is packed and with predominately terrific news.

So all is not lost goddamnit. Let’s rock:

RSDbike
Watch for this Roland Sands feature coming up including the parts that will help you build a Softail like this one.

BIKERNET SEMA committee report–November 6, Las Vegas: We had our first exploratory SEMA motorcycle council meeting with industry leaders. SEMA was represented by Russ Dean, SEMA General Council and John Brueggeman, SEMA Director, Government Relations Projects. The room was full as we discussed the various issues SEMA faces, which are similar to the motorcycle market. We discussed distribution issues of the past, legislative obstacles and resources, membership dues compared to the MIC, and warranty coverage support for motorcycle parts. We talked about expanding this committee to include metric cruisers and sport bikes.

Russ told us about their lobbyist and the legal teams available to us. We discussed SEMA benefits, their testing labs, a scholarship fund founded in 1984, charity work for kids, and educational efforts, including show seminars from experts to on-line business training. We also discovered that there exists a strong, hot rod grass roots organization/network working with state governments across the nation.

We discussed why this effort is important to the motorcycle industry and our sport. We emphasized noise, EPA efforts and supporting the motorcycle rights community.

“This was especially exciting for me because I was a charter member of the ARMO Council that represents the automotive restoration market,” said Seth Doulton, President of Horsepower Promotions. “I served on and headed up the licensing and OE relations committee, and I can tell you first-hand that it was the best thing in my 35 years in the marketplace to ever come down the road. The restoration marketplace has benefited three-fold by the networking that is strengthened by SEMA’s leadership and power. The motorcycle industry has needed this for many years. We need to build a strong team so that SEMA knows we are for real.”

Here’s our list of projects for the future:
First off, we need a name for our Motorcycle Committee under the SEMA umbrella. Our first shot at a name was Motorcycle Action Council (MAC).
We also need to form an initial committee of at least 15 members.
We need to encourage our industry to be involved and to join SEMA individually (www.sema.org).
We also need to refine our mission statement. If the committee flies, grows and works, then the SEMA board will review it in a year and transform our committee into a active council.

“For a mission statement, we should try to get this down, ideally, to oneor two sentences,” said Ross Ortman, President of Dakota Digital. “I was there when themission statement was re-written for the newly renamed HRIA (Hot RodIndustry Alliance) and know how difficult it can be to reduce aparagraph of goals and objectives into one sentence.”

Our next meeting will take place in Cincinnati during the V-Twin Expo, where we will decide on a name, committee structure and strident issues. In the interim, I would like to gather mission statement suggestions. Read this initial mission statement and give me your input. Maybe I can nail it down before Cincy. I would also like names of folks who would like to serve on our first committee. Don’t hesitate to contact me regarding any aspect of this effort. Keep in mind that we all need to join SEMA for this to be effective, www.sema.org. You can reach me, Keith Ball at:

KRAWIEC RIDES HARLEY-DAVIDSON V-ROD TO NHRA CHAMPIONSHIP– Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines Rider Takes Title with Win in Semi-Finals.

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 16, 2008) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec overcame a 20-point deficit to win the 2008 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship at the season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway. The championship is the fourth NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle title in five seasons for the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson team.

?We are really excited to bring the championship back home to Milwaukee,? said Krawiec. ?I have to thank team owners Byron Hines and Terry Vance, my crew chief Matt Hines and my teammate Andrew Hines, and Anne Paluso and everyone at Harley Davidson. We won this championship with hard teamwork.?

Krawiec started the final weekend of the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series in second place, 19 points behind NitroFish Buell rider Matt Smith. Smith, the reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, gained a point on Krawiec by leading all qualifiers for the event with a 6.967-second run. Krawiec qualified second at 6.987 seconds.

Trailing Smith by 20 points ? exactly one round of eliminations ? Krawiec started Sunday eliminations by defeating Peggy Llewellyn in round one and then used a 0.019-second reaction time and 7.042 ET to narrowly defeat a 0.043/7.022 pass by Chip Ellis. Smith beat Mike Berry in the first round, but saw his shot at a second title slip away when his motorcycle broke during his second-round run against Chris Rivas. That left Krawiec and Smith tied, with Krawiec needing a win over his Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines teammate, Andrew Hines, to clinch the title in the semi-final round. Krawiec (7.098) beat Hines (7.609) to win the first NHRA title of his career. Krawiec had a chance to cap the weekend with an event win, but his 7.009-second run was not enough to beat a event-best 6.929 pass by Rivas.

?I?ll tell you, coming into the season I was hoping to get a win or two, and finish in the top five in points,? said Krawiec. ?That didn?t happen, but we?ve been able to accomplish something that?s only happened once before in NHRA history. The level of competition is so high, but this has always been a very consistent team, and that paid off this season.?

Krawiec is only the second champion in NHRA history to win his title without winning a national event. The 31-year-old rider succeeded with consistency, making four final-round appearances, reaching the semi-finals five times, and posting the No.1 qualifying time at three events. He lost in the first round just three times in 17 events. Krawiec won the eight-rider Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle bonus event at the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend. Krawiec entered the five-race Countdown to One playoffs in seventh place, 80 points behind first-place Smith, but was runner-up in Charlotte to jump to fourth place. He reached second place with a semifinal finish in Dallas then scored back-to-back runner-ups in Richmond and Las Vegas to pull within 19 points of Smith.

In 2007 Krawiec left his job as track manager at Old Bridge Township Raceway in Englishtown, N.J., to race full-time for the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team, and placed seventh in the Pro Stock Motorcycle standings that season. Krawiec started motorcycle drag racing in the AMA Prostar series in 1999, where he won nine events and placed second in series points in 2002 and 2003. He made his NHRA racing debut at Englishtown in 2004. He now lives in Avon, Ind., near the Vance & Hines race shop.

The championship is the fourth NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle title for the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team. Andrew Hines rode a Screamin? Eagle Harley-Davidson to win the title for three consecutive seasons from 2004 to 2006. The Vance & Hines organization has now won 11 professional motorcycle drag racing titles.

Andrew Hines won at Atlanta and Madison, Ill., in 2008, and made three other final-round appearances during the season. Hines was the No. 2 qualifier in the Countdown to One playoffs and finished the season points race in fourth place. Hines and crew chief Matt Hines also won the Full Throttle Pit Crew Championship in the Pro Stock Motorcycle division, which recognizes teams for performance and consistency during qualifying over the course of the season.

The 2008 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle final point standings: 1. Eddie Krawiec, 2471; 2. Chris Rivas, 2466; 3. Matt Smith, 2451; 4. Andrew Hines, 2334; 5. Angelle Sampey, 2310.

The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Pro Stock Motorcycle team is sponsored by Ford Truck, Dunlop, Matco Tools and S100.

stator

THE ANSWER TO THE BIKERNET TECH QUESTION–It’s always a pain in the ass to push stator plugs through thick Evo cases to mate with the regulator plugs. I’m always concerned about pushing anything hard or metal against a wiring connector. Here’s the valuable responses I received from Bikernet readers and contributors:

Just spray the stator plug and the hole with Silicone and it will slide right in.

–Rogue
www.bikerrogue.com

Be sure check for burrs in the motor stator plug hole before you slide the plug in. Put a thin film of Vaseline on the plug and the case. Then slide the plug into the hole about ?? past the motor case. It only needs to come through far enough to allow the regulator plug to slide on. I usually like to have it pushed thru the case just far enough so that the regulator plug does not quite touch the motor case. If you slide it out too far, it will not seal and if you?re using a wet (oil filled) primary, you could have a leak here.

–ST

Read this article from DB Choppers (above), the pics aren’t there but he explains how he installs the stator plughttp://dbchoppers.com/chapter%208.htm

I do something similar except using dielectric grease.See if it helps.

–m

Saw your question in Sunday News.

I haven’t worked on an Evo for a LONG time. I used to be a little nervous about driving those things through, too. What I used to do, which worked OK for me, is to use clear silicon sealer as a lubricant (not silicon grease…SEALER). Once everything is together, it seals up real nice, and it doesn’t bond with the metal, so if you have to get everything apart someday, you won’t fuck up the metal. Just make sure to let the stuff dry for a few hours, and make sure the surfaces are clean. Am I still on the hook to work on the EPA/Freedom piece? Haven’t seen anything from ya.

Ride it like you know how to fix it!!!

–Hiway

Use the sealer as if it was grease. It should be damp, to give the parts a little sliding ease.Like I said, be sure to get those surfaces surgically clean, though (brake cleaner works best for me). A little dab will do ya, spread thin. Give it overnight to dry. Worked for me when I helped a buddy do this a while back. No complaints from him (and he’s a complainer, so I would have heard).

SUCKER PUNCH SALLY’S WELCOMES NEW DEALER OPERATIONS MANAGER– SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.–November 12, 2008–In response to the growing demand for its signature old-school customs, Sucker Punch Sally’s today announced the addition of Alex McClelland to its staff. McClelland will serve as Sucker Punch Sally’s dealer operations manager and will focus on sales and growth, adding new dealers to the network and developing marketing assets for existing dealers.

McClelland attended Purdue University and graduated at the top of his class from the Western Culinary Institute. He comes to Sucker Punch Sally’s with over five years of corporate sales experience for companies like Sysco Food Services and Xerox, which offers one of the top five sales training programs in the world. He has experience with both domestic and international customers, including Fender Musical Instruments, the University of Phoenix and Discount Tire. Originally from Frankfort, Indiana, McClelland now resides in Arizona with his dog Jack.

“Sucker Punch Sally’s is growing, and we want to respond to customer demand by both improving and expanding our dealer network,” said Christian Clayton, president of Sucker Punch Sally’s. “We needed someone to help with dealer development, and given Alex’s experience, we couldn’t have asked for a better fit.”

But in addition to growing its dealer network and motorcycle model line, Sucker Punch Sally’s has also expanded into another market. AUSSIE CRYSTAL DOWN– The Aussie biker community lost a staunch mate with the sudden death of Geoff ” Crystal” Lelievre. Crystal was a long time petrol head and loved any machinery that went faster than it did when it came from the factory. A long time biker, in recent years Crystal set up the business of Ultimate Choppers Australia in order to import, assemble and distribute Big Bear Choppers in the land down under.

Crystal’s dogged determination enabled him to fight the nightmare of red tape and complexgovernment regulations needed to have the various models approved for sale in Australia and he successfully steered a number of BBC models through the onerous Australian Design Rules compliance procedure. It was mainly thru Crystal’s efforts that there is now a national dealership network and more and more Big Bear Choppers out there on Aussie roads.

A mate to many, a soul mate to his wife Sue, a loving family man and loving father of Chade, Tiana and his son Tareke. Crystal will be missed by many. Ride on brother.

BUSINESS ETHICS AND TODAY’S ECONOMY FROM JAL AIRLINES–Here is an airline CEO who can talk about business ethics without irony.

When his airline encountered tough times He cut all his perks, slashed his salary three times, takes the bus to work and eats in the company cafeteria.

He points out that the people being asked to take early retirement are the same generation he is. The company’s pilots now make more than he does.

I wish he had been my boss! I wonder what the U.S. ecomony would be like if more followed Haruka Nishimatsu’s example.

CITY OF STURGIS AND STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY SPONSORS JOIN FORCES IN SUPPORTING COMMUNITY OF STURGIS–STURGIS, S.D. ? As the dust begins to settle from the 2008 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the City of Sturgis is slowly closing the door on this years? event. Part of that process includes recognizing and thanking its Sturgis Motorcycle Rally sponsors for their varied contributions to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the Sturgis community. For some, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally ?sponsor? may be a bit of a vague and perplexing term, the meaning of which more often than not seems to be a mystery of sorts.

?In having worked with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally corporate sponsorship program for almost a decade,? commented Ronda Gusinsky who has represented the City of Sturgis in the sponsorship arena since 1999, ?the term sponsor, or sponsorship, really represents a type of partnership.?

?These corporations make an investment in, and form a relationship with, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the community of Sturgis in return for the opportunity to have heightened exposure for their brand with the hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who come to Sturgis each year for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally,? Gusinsky continued.

According to Sturgis City Manager Dave Boone, the investment by the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally sponsors contributes hundred of thousands of dollars annually to the City?s bottom line.

?The sponsors? investment, revenues from the sponsorship fees, makes a significant reduction to the expense line in our budget,? Boone added, ?In addition to their sponsorship fees, the sponsors also provide many in-kind goods and services, everything from fire trucks and ambulances, to Mayor?s Ride t-shirts, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally promotional advertising in national publications and on TV, scoreboards and signage at athletic venues throughout Sturgis, as well as dozens of other goods and services that save the City money, so the City does not have to then underwrite these additional expenses.?

?This year, the City of Sturgis will present the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce with a check for over $40,000, and will contribute another $20,000 to the Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation as well, which comes directly from the funds invested with the City of Sturgis by our corporate Sturgis Motorcycle Rally sponsors,? added LaRue.

In addition, according to Gusinsky, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally corporate sponsors ASE, Official Championship of Custom Bike Building/AMD and Da Bus Rally Shuttle, not only lent their support in the form of sponsorship to this year?s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, but also made additional contributions to the community of Sturgis through their own corporate donations to the Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation. All totaled, contributions by Official World Championship, ASE, and Da Bus to the Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation were $6,500.00.

Robin Bradley, Publisher of AMD Magazine and Promoter of the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building, sums it up best, “Making the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the City of Sturgis our location for the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building meant I started to come to the area regularly outside of Rally time. The more I did so, the more I got know the people and the community in a way that you never can by visiting just at Rally time. The more often I came, the more I was able to develop an appreciation and understanding of the huge impact that the Rally has.?

Mayor Maury LaRue feels that the community of Sturgis is extremely fortunate to have corporate partners like Official World Championship, ASE, and Da Bus, as well as this year?s other Sturgis Motorcycle Rally corporate sponsors: Alltel Wireless, AMSOIL, Ultra Wheel, BlackHillsVacations.com, Budweiser, Coca-Cola, Ford, GEICO, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Jack Daniel?s, Knology, MVP/Wheeled Coach, Outdoor Channel, Pak Mail, Rosenbauer, SONY, South Dakota Department of Tourism, South Dakota Lottery, South Dakota Pork Producers Council and Tom?s T?s.

?We need to not only recognize the contributions made by our Sturgis Motorcycle Rally sponsors, but more importantly publicly and sincerely thank them,? LaRue stated. ?These are very important, generous gestures.?

For information on the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, contact Brenda Vasknetz, acting Rally Director, at 605/720-0800, or visit www.SturgisMotorcycleRally.com.

HOW’S THAT FOR A NEWS?–There’s more from NCOM and Bill Bish, but you’ll have to wait for the Sunday Post for the rest, or our monthly legislative news from Bill. I feel like the world is scrambling for solutions to bad economic situations, global warming, bullshit terrorist threats and healthcare issues.

Art Friedman’s article on the CEO of JAL airlines hits the nail on the head. We wouldn’t have any of these issues if it wasn’t for greed. If the healthcare providers were fair we’d be in great shape. If the real estate folks handled business properly, we’d be fine. If executives across the country treated their companies like Mr. JAL does, we’d be cool.

All we want to do is build bikes, chase women and ride. We represent less than 1 percent of emissions floating in the air and they want to spend billions regulating us. Times are changing. We need to learn that there is a middle ground between regulation and freedom–I hope, goddamnit.

Motorcycle Sound Working Group Narrative

ISSUE STATEMENT

The issue of motorcycle sound has been recently described as an issue that we, the motorcycle community, must address or it will address us.

WHERE WE ARE

Motorcycle sound when deemed excessive has become a serious issue in some communities and certainly may become an issue in many more. Most troubling is that the potential exists for this to affect motorcycle rights nationwide.

At this point the sound issue is being dealt with inconsistently both by the communities and the riders themselves. In the communities we are seeing a vast range of little or no concern at all, to ordinances being put in place of varying degrees from reasonable sound level limits being set clear up to harassment and outright bans. Testing is being carried out and enforced against that is not consistent with developed methodology. And we have seen unenforceable regulations on the rise in an effort to curb excessive sound. The EPA has even been called on to address the sound issue through regulations under their jurisdiction. It is easily identified that motorcycle sound can become a serious enough issue where punitive, discriminatory, and even anti-tampering measures are being suggested and often times acted upon against motorcyclists.

In the rider community we also run an equally wide gap from the “Loud pipes risk rights” crowd to the “Loud pipes save lives” crowd, both equally passionate about the sound their motorcycles make and the ability to make the desired sound. There is certainly an image that has been romanticized and capitalized upon when it comes to sound and that must be recognized. Along with that comes the desire for added performance, real or perceived, there is a strong connection of sound equals power at work here. Of greatest concern though is that amongst ourselves the issue leads to finger pointing, assigning blame or singling out specific groups, prohibiting motorcycles from motorcycle events, and may even lead to galvanizing one crowd against the other. This alone is enough to set the motorcycle rights community and their efforts back significantly.

WHERE WE WANT TO BE

In the big picture ideally we strive for mainstream society to accept motorcycles and view them as positive. We certainly want to increase accessibility to motorcycles and maintain riding areas for potential new riders and veteran riders alike. Without question we desire a well-educated public and one that can influence and educate future users. We need the various National and State motorcycle rights organizations to work together on this issues as well as continue coalition building with other affected motorcycle users of all types. We certainly want to avoid global standards, community driven standards, and government control. Instead we should want to see rider responsibility, social marketing, and peer pressure as methods to help solve the issue where the motto “Educate not Legislate” remains a driving force.

HOW TO GET THERE

Many believe that this is not really a motorcycle issue but may be more of a behavioral issue and that must be addressed through more education. We need to get additional motorcycle elements invested in the process of recognizing sound as an issue. We need to educate motorcyclists and the public what sound is. Along with that we must also insure appropriate, consistent, affordable, and repeatable testing if it is to be used as a measurement tool. Very important is the fact that we must illustrate as the motorcycle stakeholders involved that nothing was taken off the table and that all concerns and avenues to address those concerns were discussed in an open environment. We also need much greater cooperation between riders and the public.

SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS

Publish an explanatory document illustrating the many subjects related to the sound issue the Sound Working Group considered.

Publish a technical document explaining the mechanics of sound and sound measurement, as well as identifying the current standards in place and their sound measurement techniques.

Critical we get the motorcycle media, the motorcycle racing community, and manufacturers from the O.E.M. side and the aftermarket side to become fully recognizant and invested in this issue.

Manufacturers need to be aware of cost implications and availability of various parts affecting sound.

The racing community needs to enforce rules in place, the concern here is that the general riding population will purchase whatever the professionals use on their motorcycles and in many cases they exceed the racing standards in place.

Form a strong coalition with the off-road motorcycle community, as many of the issues we face are the same. The On-road group can certainly learn from the Off-road group.

Further investigate the issue of sound and its negativity. Specifically research what leads to the actual complaint from the public such as time of day, duration of excessive sound, tone, decibel level, and was it tied to another event.

Conduct a scientific study into whether or not sound has an impact on the safety of the motorcyclist and/or increases awareness of another driver as to the presence of a motorcycle, and if so in what circumstances.

Develop and promote voluntary sound measurement exercises by motorcyclists in order to educate riders on their sound levels.

Develop a program that can be used to educate the public on this issue.

Need to investigate whether or not the current and proposed EPA regulations are too strict and forcing the sound issue.

Get State Motorcycle Rights Organizations to agree that educating their members can have an impact if the proper tool is used.

A concerted effort should be made by motorcycle dealers and aftermarket shops to define a usable power band for the user. This campaign would best be developed by an industry association for promotion amongst their members.

HIGH PRIORITY

Develop a social awareness campaign (peer pressure) in a usable format to educate riders regarding the affect motorcycle sound can have in many riding areas and then get the manufacturers, rights groups, and marketing groups to promote and distribute it.
