BIKERNET TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK– I am looking for an inexpensive way to get a kicker kit on my bike. I have a nice set of true dual exhaust, and I want to be able to put the exile kicker kit on but the kicker arm doesn’t clear the exhaust, so my question is does the Muller kicker arm fit another type of kicker kit so I can get some more clearance, or is it unique to the Muller kicker kit?

–Mike Scholtz
Michael.K.Scholtz@uscg.mil

There are various kicker arms, from straight up to kicked out about 3 inches. If any of these kits allow you to bolt up a stock arm, you can add a kicked out job. Hope that helps. You also know that adding a kicker to any Softail transmission, kicks out the position of the kicker.–Wrench

Doc East Coast Custom Australian Custom Bike Champion

Australian Motorcycle Expo Gold Coast a resounding success– 22,000 enthusiasts experienced the sights and sounds of the inaugural Australian Motorcycle Expo Gold Coast last week which ran from Friday February 20 to Sunday February 22nd.

The event eclipsed the Brisbane (2007) attendance figures by an incredible margin, with the organisers, Exhibitions and Trade Fairs, reporting a 65% increase in visitors.

Exhibits, displays and action demonstrations made full use of the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre?s interior and exterior facilities, with constant crowds adding to the family-friendly atmosphere.Occasional inclement weather couldn?t dampen show goers spirits ? and neither could a growing gloomy economic climate ? exhibitors reported record interest in new motorcycles, scooters, ATVs and PWCs plus products, accessories and services.

Event Manager Mark Petersen said the Expo had the potential to become one of the Gold Coast?s premier events after an exceptionally successful staging last week.

?The Australian Motorcycle Expo Gold Coast shows that the industry is thriving despite toughening financial times, so we?re ecstatic with the response from visitors, who really embraced the event and all it had to offer. The venue?s extension allowed us to expand on exhibition space and demonstration areas, and the locality made the various test ride options a favourite with visitors.

All exhibitors should be congratulated on the quality of their displays, including manufacturers and distributors who went to amazing lengths to secure the newest and most exclusive motorcycles for public viewing.

We were privileged to host some very special guests, including Troy Bayliss, Chris Vermeulen, Jamie Whincup and Seth Enslow, who were very popular with visitors. We?re already looking forward to next year, with every indication the event will return and already a huge amount of interest in bookings.?

Dylan Robb from Warrnambool in country Victoria – aka the ?Wizard of Warnnambool? – took out top honours in the East Coast Custom Australian Custom Bike Championships, with his entry capturing the judges’ attention as National Champion.

GOING TO DAYTONA FOR BIKE WEEK? MAKE A STATEMENT AND A STAND IN MYRTLE BEACH!– Have you ever wanted to make a stand on the front lines of the battle for Motorcyclists’ Rights? No, I don’t mean lamenting lid laws from some VFW barstool after an ABATE meeting. And no, I don’t mean making whiney postings about new reckless riding rules on some Yahoo Groups sportbike forum. I mean, just once in your life, wouldn’t you like to truly take the point position in the fight for *your* Right to Ride? Well here’s your chance!

Over the next several days, hundreds of thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts from coast to coast will be leaving their recession depressions behind as they stuff their saddlebags, top off their touring cases, or load up their “Live to Ride” trailers and head to Florida for the 68th Annual Daytona Beach Bike Week. If you are fortunate enough to participate in that pilgrimage, I encourage you to add some slack to your schedule and reroute your GPS for a 2/28 side trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Here is why:Defying sound economic reason, overriding the sovereignty of state law, and in clear violation of our Constitutionally-guaranteed civil rights, the municipal government of the City of Myrtle Beach has passed a series of rules and ordinances aimed at terminating Myrtle Beach’s Bike Weeks, i.e. the Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Spring Rally, and the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest:http://myrtlebeachbikerinfo.com/ordinances.html

This Google News link will help to bring you current on the controversy…http://tinyurl.com/bztbsb…and I’d like you to pay special attention to the article linked here…http://tinyurl.com/ddkhlo…which reads as follows:

MOTORCYCLE “FREEDOM” RIDE–In an email to News13, one biker states that the Myrtle Beach Helmet Freedom Ride will be held on Saturday, February 28, at the Beaver Bar, 3381 Highway 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, beginning at 11:00 AM. The ride will depart at noon.

The email states that “participants will be given instructions and route details just prior to the departure of the ride. All participants in this Helmet Freedom Ride do so as common adventurers. Local bikers may coordinate this ride but no one is considered a leader of this ride. All participants take responsibility for making their own decisions including, but not limited to, whether to participate and what equipment they choose to use or not such as safety equipment (helmets) or vehicle equipment (mufflers).”

Organizers state, “The ride is a grassroots effort to oppose discrimination. There is no single group or individual leading this grassroots effort. Bikers in every town or city of the Carolinas are the backbone of this effort. Motorcyclists of every walk of life are welcome.”

Organizers add that free legal assistance will be provided for the participants…

Organizers have also set a rain date for the event, March 7, 2009 at the same time and place.

***

Despite the focus of Ms. Ponton’s report, DON’T THINK FOR A MOMENT THAT THE ISSUE HERE IS LIDS. The real issue here is *your* right as an American motorcyclist to share the road equally with other motorists, and whether the City of Myrtle Beach–or any other municipality–can blatantly disregard state law and the Constitution of the United States in an open and unapologetic attempt to take away that right. Remember WHY WE FIGHT:

“The battle for bikers’ rights is not about patches, parties or poker runs. We fight to protect the freedom and promote the interests of American motorcyclists … to defend our right to choose our own modes of transportation, attire and lifestyle … to deter and defy discrimination against us … and to vanquish those who violate our rights or right-of-way.” [ http://BikersRights.LdrLongDistanceRider.com ]

And whether you’re going to Daytona for Bike Week or not, please make a stop, a statement and a stand in Myrtle Beach!

Speaking strictly for myself and no other individuals or organizations,

DAYTONA TRUTH OR DARE GAME SPURS ARREST ON LEWD CHARGE– A 43-year-old shirtless woman was found playing Truth or Dare with teenagers at a park and arrested on several charges, Edgewater police said. Upon driving into the Whistle Stop Park parking lot on Roberts Road, a police officer spotted several teenagers running from the bathroom area to the pavilion about 2:30 a.m. on July 23.

Jennifer L. Russell, wearing only a bra and jeans, was also running to the pavilion while attempting to put her shirt back on. According to a police report, when the four teens, ages 15 and 16, were asked why they ran, one of them said they dared Russell to expose her breasts, but she had only removed her shirt when the officer arrived on scene.

Asked why she was shirtless, Russell, a New Smyrna Beach resident, told police she “was getting hot.”

BUELL RACERS GEARING UP FOR 2009 DAYTONA SEASON OPENER–Six 1125Rs to Contest First-Ever Daytona 200 Night Race.

East Troy, Wis. (Feb. 24, 2009) Buell racers from around the country are gearing up for the 2009 race season, which kicks off at Daytona International Speedway during Daytona Bike Week February 28 through March 6.

In AMA Pro Racing action, the 2009 season opens with a paradigm shift as new series management and class structures debut at Daytona on Wednesday, March 4. The historic Daytona 200 moves to a thrilling new nighttime run under the lights on the evening of Friday, March 6. Six Buell 1125Rs are entered in the Daytona SportBike class for the Daytona 200, which will be broadcast live on SPEED TV at 8 P.M. (Eastern). Daytona 200 Buell riders include Michael Barnes (Geico Powersports/RMR), Danny Eslick (Bruce Rossmeyer?s Daytona Racing/RMR), Alan Schmidt and Josh Bryan (Latus Motors H-D/Buell), Bryan Bemisderfer (H-D/Buell of Frederick) and Shawn Higbee (Bartels? H-D/Buell).

?We?ve learned a lot from racing in the MOTO-ST series for the past two seasons,? said RMR?s Richie Morris. ?It was intense and the competition was good, but it was nothing like we?ll face this year. We?ve got a second year bike, two new teams, and two new riders, and we?re starting the season at the biggest, most important race,? Morris said. ?We?ve had good results in testing and I think before the end of the year, we?ll be up front. We?ve got a veteran [rider] and a young gun, so I think we?ve covered all our bases.?

Joining veteran racer Michael Barnes is 22-year-old Danny Eslick, who cut his teeth racing dirt track before turning to road racing in 2005. He?s no stranger to the Daytona 200, having finished fourth in the 2005 race.

?I?m super excited to be working with Richie, Bruce Rossmeyer?s Daytona Racing, Buell, and my teammate Michael Barnes,? said Eslick of Broken Arrow, Okla. ?I was planning on getting my dirt track gear together when I got the call that [RMR] was looking for a second rider.? Eslick?s first introduction to his Buell 1125R and the new Dunlop spec tires came during a test at Jennings Grand Prix in Florida in early February. ?These new tires are right up my alley. I think they?re really going to work well with the Buell?s torque to get off the corners,? said Eslick. ?I?d be more than happy with a top five finish, but my goal for Daytona is to leave with a good solid finish and come out healthy and ready for the rest of the season.?

Recovering from a pre-season testing hand injury, Eslick?s teammate Michael Barnes will use the opening days of Bike Week to test his readiness for the 200-mile race.

?After our successful test under the lights at Daytona in January, we were testing at Jennings GP in early February and unfortunately I had a high-speed low side crash that resulted in a third metacarpal fracture. It was immediately plated, and the prognosis is very good,? Barnes said. ?We?re managing the soft tissue recovery now, and we plan to use the CCS weekend to assess my performance for the 200. If I don?t think I?m capable of representing the team and our sponsors, we?ve got a substitute rider lined up. But I?m optimistic, because I really don?t want to miss the start of my 21st season racing at Daytona!?

Rounding out the AMA Pro Racing Buell highlights at Bike Week is the debut of the SunTrust Moto-GT series? new class structure, which includes the horsepower and weight restricted GT1 and GT2 classes. The two-hour season opener will begin at 4 P.M. on Friday, March 6, immediately prior to the opening ceremonies for the Daytona 200.

Stepping up from the former MOTO-ST GrandSport Twins class to contest Moto-GT1, the James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing team sponsored by H-D/Buell of Appleton will debut its new 1125R with riders Paul James and Jeff Johnson. Also entered aboard an 1125R in Moto-GT1 is the Liberty Waves Racing/Antelope Valley H-D/Buell 1125R ridden by Eric Pinson and Eric Haugo.

?We earned 11 podium finishes in two seasons of MOTO-ST competition aboard a Buell Firebolt, but this is a whole new ball game,? said James. ?We?re ready for the challenge.?

Bike Week?s racing action kicks off with the Championship Cup Series (CCS) and American Sportbike Racing Association Pro (ASRA Pro) at DIS the weekend of Feb. 28-March 2, and topping the list of Buell entries in the ASRA Pro Thunderbike class will be the return of a trio of former class champs, including 2007 class champ and 2008 runner-up Dave Estok (Deeley H-D/Buell). Also entered in Thunderbike are 2006 champion Dan Bilansky (Hal?s H-D/Buell), and 2004 champion Bryan Bemisderfer (H-D/Buell of Frederick). All are riding Buell Firebolt XB12Rs.

?I?ve got this weird on again, off again thing going with the [Thunderbike] championship. I won it in ?03, ?05, and ?07, so I feel like this is my year,? said Estok, who will also contest the Parts Canada Superbike Championship this season.

CRANE CAMS CLOSES DAYTONA OPERATIONS–It has been reported that that Crane Cams’ Daytona Beach factory has been closed down and the employees of the company laid off. Unconfirmed reports claim that workers at the plant had been told to expect some lay-offs, but that there had been no mention of the complete closure of the facility.

Founded in 1953, Crane became employee-owned in 1979 and was acquired in 2005 by Mikronite Technologies Group, a New Jersey based industrial technology firm that had previously worked with the cam manufacturer.

It is reported that, two years into their ownership cycle, Mikronite sold the primary property on which the Crane facility was located in Daytona to STAG Capital Partners.

It is believed that a 10-year lease was then taken to keep Crane’s manufacturing facility on the site, and that in making that deal it is thought that Mikronite were able to recoup a substantial proportion of the initial outlay they made to acquire Crane.

Always primarily an automotive performance product manufacturer, from the 1980’s Crane enjoyed nearly two decades in which it was also one of the market leaders for cam and related performance upgrades for the Harley-Davidson aftermarket. It is believed that some efforts are being made to rescue the brand and parts of the product range, but if they fail this could mark the end of the road for an icon of American performance and a business which, as recently as two years ago, employed some 200 or so people.

MARJORIE FROM THUNDER PRESS COMMENTS ON MOTORCYCLE COUNCIL WITHIN SEMA EFFORT BY BIKERNET–We’ve reached out far and wide within the motorcycle industry for opinions and suggestions regarding starting a SEMA council to support motorcycling. Recently Marjorie Klienman sent her distinct and thought provoking suggestion regarding our proposal to SEMA. Check ’em out:Am I too late? I didn’t notice your deadline because I was dealing with deadlines of my own ;-)Anyway, here are my comments, for what it’s worth:- Spell out ABATE and describe what the organization is
– Make sure your mention of John Brueggerman has the Senator heading and the state of Montana
– When you wrote about banning vintage bikes, etc., talk about their committee for vintage cars that has killed bad legislation and proposed good legislation (I think it may be the Hot Rod Industry Alliance), because we’d like to do something similar in this area. Of course that’s only one piece of what we motorcyclists need
– Do you want this to be a council or a committee? Learn the difference and make the choice if you haven’t already
– What’s in it for them? What can WE bring to the SEMA table? This might be the most important of all, and it’s a question I have to ask myself every time I make a business proposal.

Nice job, though, and I really appreciate your pulling this all together.

BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS ALERTS–IRISH CUSTOM BIKE SHOW, CAT MOTORCYCLE, BREAKFAST AT DENNYS AND GETTING LOADED

Continued From Page 1

Irish AMDshow

IRISH MOTORBIKE & SCOOTER SHOW–Carole Nash Irish Motorbike & Scooter ShowFollowing its success in March 2007, Ireland’s biennial Motorbike & Scooter Show will be staged at the RDS (Royal Dublin Society) Exhibition Centre in Dublin again this year (February 27th – March 1st), with the event again hosting the Irish Custom Bike Championship as a World Championship of Custom Bike Building Official Affiliate.

2007 saw Mick Creedon and Ger Conlon of C&C Choppers winning the event and going forward to represent the show and the country at the World Championship.

Irish AMDshow2

With what event organizer Ruth Lemass (SDL Exhibitions, Dublin) is describing as “an unprecedented number of entries”, the 2009 competition looks like it will showcase another step-up in the rapidly developing story of a market where the custom market has been small, but where it was always expected that design and engineering passion and creativity would develop just as vigorously as it has done elsewhere if there was a showcase and catalyst for it to do so.

Congratulations, therefore, to Ruth Lemass and her team at the Carole Nash Insurance sponsored show for staying the course in difficult times and giving the builders in Ireland the opportunity they have needed.

As its name suggests, The Irish Motorbike & Scooter is a broad-based event that showcases the current product lines from most of the mainstream OE’s as well as the wide spectrum of parts and accessory distributors that import from all around the world.

This will be the sixth ‘year’ for the show (the third for the custom show’s affiliation with the World Championship Program) and with some 25,000 visitors and 120 plus exhibitors in 2007 it represents the small but enthusiastic Irish market’s primary showcase for a sport that has deep racing roots and heritage in Ireland.

“Despite the economic downturn we already know that this will be the biggest motorcycle show ever held in Ireland” Ruth Lemass told AMD, “and by far the largest custom bike show too”.

“New motorcycle sales are down, but pre-show interest in The Irish Motorbike & Scooter Show, and in the AMD affiliate custom bike show, has been extraordinary. Both in terms of public and exhibitor enthusiasm it really has taken even us by surprise. I think it is fair to say that the show will be busy and that the public’s enthusiasm for motorcycling here in Ireland is at record levels at this time”.

bedroll
Click To Purchase a Bandit?s Bedroll

GETTING LOADED, 6 TIPS, PACKING YOUR MOTORCYCLE, THE SAFE AND SMART WAYS–Unless you’ve learned the hard way (you’ll know if you did), most riders don’t know how to pack gear on their motorcycle the properly. Stability and steering, not to mention safety, are seriously compromised when you load a bike improperly.

1) The first thing you need to know about proper load distribution on two wheels is to keep it centered between them. Contrary to all the “Easy Rider” mythos, you should not be strapping heavy bedrolls on your handlebars. Screws up the steering badly by adding to the pendulum effect of turning the handlebars. Instead of a precise, delicate response to your input at the grips, you get a fork that wants to flop radically from side to side.

Packing

Think twice about slapping 150 pounds in a backrest bag that hangs over your luggage rack. The luggage rack probably has a little sticker on it that says “15 pounds maximum load” or words to that effect. It takes very little weight hanging over and behind the back axle to make your steering a little… ahem… light. It also compresses the rear shocks too much, thus largely negating any help from them in the event of a problem. Taken to extremes this “strap it on the ass end” logic can lead to a motorcycle doing a poor imitation of a wheelbarrow loaded with wet cement. Control all but disappears, wet roads become lethal (OK, more lethal), steering gets twitchy even in the dry because the front wheel is barely skimming the tarmac, and you may be asking for a flat rear tire if you exceed its load rating.

2) Keep the weight low on the chassis. Saddlebags make more sense to the steering geometry of your machine than backrest bags on sissy bars. The bags keep the weight positioned down low, below seat height. This makes for superior stability. Perhaps the next best thing is a tank bag. True, it’s higher up on the machine, but unless you’re carrying bowling balls in the thing, it’s still more stable than the same mass slung on bars… be they handle or sissy. The bonus is, with a tank bag the load is once again contained within the wheelbase. Some larger tank bags have saddlebag attachments for the sides of the tank. This isn’t a bad plan, if you need the extra capacity, and even further lowers your load’s center of gravity.

3) Heed payload warnings on luggage racks and backrests and such. Mentioned before, this bears repeating, because aside from creating instability, some folks do overload a rack, sissy bar, or seat rail, beyond the break strength of the welds or the bolts that attach the thing to your machine. The best way to avoid this and still bring all the necessities along is not to put all your eggs in one basket — or on one luggage rack if you prefer. Take the same amount of stuff you were carrying on the rack and move some of it to saddlebags, tank bags, windshield pouches, back packs, and so on. Don’t use extra storage space as an excuse to bring more stuff. It’s extra, not additional. Use it, if you must, to carry those souvenirs from the trip back home.

4) Pack light. You ride a motorcycle not a RV. Think carefully about just how much you need for your trip. When you get home from a long road trip, pay attention to the things you brought and never used, then leave them at the house next time. If you forget something, you can stop and buy it, borrow it or, well, you can manage without it. If it’s provided at your destination or any stop along the way, omit it. Don’t tote it — especially heavy, bulky stuff.

5) Take the time to adjust the shocks stiffer and run more pressure in your tires, just like the owner’s manual instructs — particularly important if you plan to travel burning up highways, instead of meandering down byways. Heavy loads and high speeds are not a natural mix, no matter what you’ve heard about “road-hugging” weight. The laws of physics say otherwise. The fact is an obscenely obese wobbler will have a terrifying tendency to leave the road well before a lightly loaded, properly suspended one even makes you nervous. Never mind that an overloaded machine lets you know painfully, where every bump in that road is. How uncomfortable do you want to be? Sometimes, less really is more.

6) Small temporary loads can, and likely should, be carried on your person, in a backpack or stuffed in your jacket or fanny pack. Two reasons: namely to get you out of the habit of thinking of your motorcycle as a U-haul, and to give you some sense of empathy with the difference weight and bulk make to things like center of gravity and maneuverability.

Bottom line, a road trip should be an exhilarating, carefree example of the motorcycle experience at its best. Literally, traveling lightly, in all senses of the word. In an ideal world, travel by motorcycle should involve nothing more bulky than a credit card. In this world, there’s more to it than that, in some cases, much more, in still others too much? period. Learning to balance your needs and your luggage means your time on the road will be a better trip. And isn’t that what it’s about?

AH, THE CODE OF THE WEST SURFACES IN STRANGE PLACES–A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated and advised him that all was well. However, the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs in his crotch. Worried that it might be a second surgery the doctors hadn’t told him about, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown up enough so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable.

Taped firmly across his pubic hair were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn’t come off easily. Written in large black letters was thesentence:”Get well soon….from the nurse in the Jeep you pulled over last week.”

BIKERNET PRE-DAYTONA BIKE WEEK NEWS, MYRTLE BEACH PROTESTS, LITTLE BIKE BANS, AND DAYTONA PARTIES

Georgegirl
She wants to be on the cover of a motorcycle magazine. She’s in Scott McCool’s hands now.

Hey,

I don’t know where to steer my forks today. Daytona is happening and we’ll bring you reports. Mike Pullin built me a spare 5-Ball racing factory racer gas tank out of an small fire extinquisher and we”ll show you the process. We recently featured Michael Boen’s Indian Larry Tribute bike and noticed a shot of a crazy brass plumbing plug he made a point cover with. “You can have it,” Michael said when he replaced it with an Indian Larry Odyssey job. He brought it to me in Cincy and immediately got me thinking. At the end of the news I’ll show you what I came up with.

MIKE PULLIN

Finally. I experienced Vertigo for the first time in my life. Nasty shit. It’s like your worst case of seasickness without the sea, but all is not lost. Vertigo is a symptom, not a disease. I’m reading a book about it and discovering that there are exercises that will ward it off forever. We all need good news. Finally, since I was dizzy constantly I quit watching the news and suddenly the economy was fine. That might be the best cure. Let’s hit the news:

Engine

BIG INCH MUSCLE FROM CUSTOM CHROME, RevTech 125? Engine ?-Introducing the all-new RevTech 125?! With more power, dynamite looks, and greater dependability than ever before, the RevTech 125? offers up-grades over traditional v-twins that make it truly one of the ?best of the best.? Starting with a clean slate, our engineers incorporated the best features and technology the market has to offer to create for you a fire-breathing RevTech 125? engine.

These masterpieces are ASSEMBLED IN THE USA with parts sourced from some of the biggest and best names in the business. We?re talking about brands like Manley, JE Pistons, Daytona Twin Tec, Andrews, Mikuni American Corp., Timken and many more.

REVTech is known for it?s extreme attention to detail and it?s evident in this engines special styling, amazing reliability and unreal ?seat of the pants? torque. And we didn?t stop there! We included increased fin area on the cylinders and heads and state of the art internal piston oilers, creating maximum temperature control and increased engine life. The traditional breather system with gear has a long proven track record, specially designed ?D?-shaped intake and manifold ports provide exceptional controlled air flow and the 45mm Mikuni carburetor provides the 125? monster all the fuel it needs.

Earning a position in the RevTech line of engines is no easy task. Only after rigorous testing can an engine take its place among a legacy of motors proven over two decades of service. Before putting the new 125? into production, we subjected it to durability testing by Optimum Power Technology in Bridgeville, PA., where the engine withstood a brutal non-stop 100-hour beating. During testing varying loads were placed on the engine from a 950 rpm idle up to 5,000 rpm?s for various lengths of time with brief rest periods in between to cool off and go again. The average duration of each cycle was 33 minutes and this cycle was performed more then 180 times during the 100-hour test period. We go to these lengths to ensure that each and every RevTech? engine has earned its place among the finest engines available today.

These new engine assemblies will replace 1984 thru 1999 Evolution style engines. Assembled with Pride in the U.S.A.

AMA BANNER

AMA CALL TO ACTION, PREVENT MOTORCYCLE BAN–Take action now: Help stop the ban on youth model OHVs Action items to share with your club members, racers and fans

As you may know by now, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) has effectively banned the sale of youth off-highway vehicles (OHVs) as of Feb. 10, 2009. The AMA is issuing a repeated call for action to help reverse the potentially devastating effect this could have on the sport of OHV recreation.

We are also asking for your help, as promoters and club leaders, to spread the word to your club members, racers and fans to encourage them to get involved.

While this move could cripple the future of the sport, it does appear that there may be relief for the use of motorcycles purchased prior to Feb. 10. The Congressional Research Service (CRS) has compiled a list of prohibited acts in the CPSIA. Neither riding a previously purchased motorcycle nor promoting a race that includes those motorcycles is included on that list.

Still, immediate attention is needed to end this ban on the sale and manufacture of youth model OHVs. In addition to the efforts the AMA is putting in on Capitol Hill, all motorcyclists need to help fight this measure. Here are some quick links to background information and ways you can help reverse this decision:

?Contact your representatives in Congress by using the Take Action button in the Issues and Legislation section of the AMA website.

?Write the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) directly to encourage them to exclude youth model OHVs here.

?Read the AMA press release on this issue here .

?Read the AMA’s comments to the CPSC here .

?Click here to download a PDF version of the CPSIA.

GET THE LEAD OUT-PRODUCT BAN LAW–With Congress saying “get the lead out,” motorcycle manufacturers and local businesses are wondering if common sense gets chucked along with it. Retailers across the country are yanking shoes, toys and any goods marketed to children from shelves to comply with a strict lead law enacted nearly unanimously by Congress.

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which went into effect February 10, 2009 is meant to protect children from lead-laden products, but unintended consequences of the new legislation are decimating the industry as thousands of motorcycle and recreation vehicle retailers across the country scramble to obey the federal law: all of them had to cease selling small off-road motorcycles and ATVs designed for kids, because according to a provision of the Act the machines are dangerous?not because a child might have an accident on the diminutive machines, but because if a child develops an appetite for the vehicle’s brakes or battery terminals and decides to nibble on the ATV or motorbike, lead poisoning may result.

The ban encompasses some 19 models from just Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki. The economic impact of the CPSC’s ruling will be substantial for both dealers and manufacturers in an already weakened economy. The regulation takes an estimated $100 million worth of inventory off the sales floors of some 13,000 dealers immediately. It also impinges on manufacturers, makers of aftermarket equipment and everything from racetracks to distributors.

Honda has already informed dealers that their inventories of new and used youth motorcycles and ATVs will become worthless and legally unsalable effective Feb. 10. ?In fact, under the terms of the Act you cannot even display these models on your showroom floor, distribute brochures, or advertise them on your website,? Honda told their dealer network.

According to motorcycle and ATV industry sources, most motorcycle and ATV components are compliant with the CPSIA?s lead limits, but some components unavoidably contain small quantities of lead in excess of the CPSIA?s limits. However, the nature and location of these components suggests a very minimal exposure risk. Industry reps say the lead used in motorcycles and ATVs is embedded in alloys but is not easily transferred to humans through typical use, the way lead in paint or infant toys would be.

Motorcycle riders, activists and enthusiasts are requested to contact their Congressional representatives and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and ask them to exclude youth model off-highway vehicles from the final rule governing the law.

CONSUMER REPORTS TESTS MOTORCYCLES–Fueled by painfully high gasoline prices, 2008 saw many consumers looking for new alternatives to big-bucks fill-ups at the pump. With rising consumer interest in lower-priced two-wheelers that sip rather than guzzle gas and thousands of new riders on the road, Consumer Reports has tested small motor scooters and motorcycles for the first time since 1981.

“When fuel prices crossed the $4.00 per gallon mark, some consumers shifted gears and two wheels became a cost-saving alternative,” said Rik Paul, automotive editor, Consumer Reports. “And, despite current low gas costs, interest in scooters and motorcycles may continue to increase, especially in urban areas where parking space is at a premium.”

Consumer Reports tested a total of eight fuel-sipping, small-displacement motorcycle and scooter models. Like Consumer Reports in-depth auto testing process, scooters and motorcycles were subjected to an extensive sequence of standardized tests to determine their performance in categories such as acceleration, braking, fuel economy, noise/vibration, top speed and comfort.

The full report is available in the March 2009 issue of Consumer Reports and online at www.ConsumerReports.org.

MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE DECLINE CORRECTION–IT’S ALL GOOD!–It seemed like Buzz Kanter, AMERICAN IRON MAGAZINE, in his premature rumor concerning Source Interlink Distribution / Media’s demise was truly concerned regarding the future of Hot Bike, Baggers, and Street Chopper in particular. Just so Buzz can rest easy, and know all is well on the SIM front, it looks like we have picked up 600 more stores in nine states in a recent long-term agreement with Time Inc, thus the recent newsstand turmoil has come to an end.

5-Ball Factory Racer Build for 2009-1

Paughco Banner

Engine

Hey, it's the start of the official Sturgis 2009 project bike, the 5-Ball Factory Racer. For decades guys have built vintage- looking scooters with late model drive-trains. Hell, I built another one at Strokers Dallas in the '90s. Before I dreamed of it, Arlen Ness built a '20s vintage scooter and sidecar around a Sportster engine. Randy Simpson built vintage kit bikes. Don Hotop built some of the finest vintage-styled customs and just last week, I saw a '20s styled bike at the SEMA show in Las Vegas built by the Shadley Brothers for House of Kolors. Beautiful piece. So I ain't the first by a long shot.

Old shot
Old shot of an early H-D from the Bob T. Collection.

But there is something in the air recently respecting the old iron and bringing it back to life. Some of it has to do with restrictions, and building older bikes is unrestricted. Some of it has to do with nostalgia and some is just a wild departure from the last project. I'm excited every year about this learning process. It's like painting one picture on a massive canvas, finishing it successfully, and then pondering the next easel. I get pumped and begin to research what's available.

Nash kicker
The Nash kicker is the new breed of kickers.

Billy Lane inspired me with his recent Henderson four custom and his notion to find vintage engines and build bikes around them. We traded a 1913 Pope engine for a '20s H-D Peashooter single that I will ultimately build a Salt Flats racer out of with the help of Todd's Cycle. Dennis is working on the frame and tank.

Rick 15

Rick Krost has also been inspirational with his board track racer frame and chassis kit. He was having a tough time finding a manufacturer for his intricate frames, so we drove to Carson City, Nevada and I introduced him to the chopper original, Ron Paugh from Paughco. Paughco Inc. began as a machine shop run by Ron's dad in the '60s when Ron jammed into the shop one day and asked his dad if he could build a Panhead inner primary. They've been building bike parts ever since. Ron was a natural to take on the vintage U.S. Chopper frame.

shortenedframe
Here's the shortened example of the Factory Racer from U.S. Choppers.

Shortframe2

Shortframe3
First bike Rick completed with the shortened frame.

It's a terrific frame and some of the greats in our industry built U.S. Chopper Board Track Customs from Ralph of Knockout Choppers and Vicious Cycles show winner that graced the cover of American Iron recently. But there was an inherent problem with these chassis for a guy 6 foot 4. I was way too tall, but I was still intrigued.

This is it, the first frame from this model line.

Chris' first illustration. Notice the differences.

I wanted to build one of these, but in my old age status, I needed some size and forward controls. Then Rick started on his second generation model with the Paughco factory, and they called it the Factory Racer. Initially Ron built the first concept frame, this one. Rick didn't feel it fit his scrunched design criteria and asked Ron to shorten it by 6 inches and reduce the rake. Again, it put the U.S. Choppers design configuration out of my too-tall league. My project was threatened.

Wheelsthroughtime contest
You could win this fantastic Knucklehead. Just click here.

I spoke to Rick and told him my concerns, so he developed two frames. In fact, Rick's super-short version turned out to be way too short and he was forced to lengthen it slightly. And so this project began with all Paughco components including their highly secret manufacturing process that allows them to produce absolute classic wide and narrow tapered-leg springers. I went with the narrow job to stay in keeping with the 1915 style.

Chrisillo4

While I ordered parts I reached out to the Bikernet Official 5-Ball Racing Illustrator for an inspirational visual. I fed him information on the format and elements and he made the project come to life. I'm always inspired by each build, but for some reason the 1915 5-Ball Factory Racer held a special significance. We are planning our first Bikernet Vintage Classic Ride and gathering to Sturgis next year, and so perhaps a tradition will emerge.

FBFR2

Billy Lane and Chica would like to tag along when we cut a dusty trail with an assortment of vintage and replica bikes to the Badlands. We are hoping we can make our semi-central meeting place the new location of Dale Walksler's Wheels Through Time Museum in Arizona. I spoke to him this morning and he still doesn't have a desert location.

frontend

frontwheel
I don't have my wheels yet, so I dug up a couple to help me with mock up. Check this puppy, a 17-inch spool hub.

So I was pumped, and I always attempt to build the ultimate bike from a reliability and handling ease standpoint. I always have the notion that this bike will stick with me into my ripe old age; easy to work on, easy to ride, comfortable and durable. I'm not trying to build a show winner or something so exotic that it's not road worthy. I'm after the opposite. I want a bike that is tough as nails and looks that way.

bearings
I also found a fresh set of sealed Timkens and CCI dust covers.

bearinggrease
I didn't overdo the grease, since it will be torn down for a Rollin Sixes paint and powder.

The other code I hoped to follow was one of tradition. Without getting crazy I planned to adopt as many early H-D parts as possible for a Vintage look. Paughco's catalog helped a lot with traditional '20s rectangular footboards, a vertical tool box, and flat side tanks.

paughcoparts
All this classic stuff is available through Paughco.

I reached out to Fred Lange for a vintage '20s sprung seat. Nash Motorcycle Company has vintage grips and DBBP in Europe makes bronze dogbone risers. Black Bike Wheels custom-builds 3.50 wide 23-inch wheels and Avon makes tires to fit.

inneck
With the smaller dust shield and a bearing on the bottom of the stem, I muscled the front end into the neck. The races were already in place.

You can see the larger dust shield, the stem nut, the top tree and the threads for the top stem nut.

A new way for me to adjust a rear chain. Spin the axle plates.

I dug through my lockers of parts for old H-D controls, kickstands and miscellaneous items from the rigid frame era and started a stack of parts. I ordered the coolest headlight, taillight, and air cleaner combination from Crime Scene Choppers, their Rapid series.

Recently, I ran across a classic shotgun-styled exhaust system with an approved Suppertrapp tuneable muffler. I was going to make my own system, but this one is killer. Part of it comes from WCC and part from Illusion Cycles.

engine2

The key to the success of this project is the drive train. I sought a Crazy Horse V-Plus, 100-inch engine for several reasons. It has a classic design, renewed performance, looks and a left-side carb. I will couple it to a JIMS 5-speed transmission with a Baker kicker unit and a 5-1 shifting drum, so I can run a tank shifter and find neutral without a problem.

trans

I generally run a BDL primary drive and Spyke and Compu-fire electrical components. I'm going to remount the gas tank with Bung King components and Rick Krost is building the oil bag to fit. For some strange reason I'm sick like a puppy dog today, so I'll stop here, but I will be back shortly with an update. If my head would quit throbbing I'd add some highly inspirational closing, but I'm toast. See ya next time.

BIKERNET NEWS FINALE – FINALY!

Continued From Page 4

RICHARD LESTER BANNER

MOTORCYCLISTS REAP REWARDS FROM ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE–Motorcycling will reap some benefits from the historic two-year, $787 billion economic recovery and stimulus bill recently signed into law by President Barack Obama.

Language in HR 1, the largest spending measure ever enacted by Congress, provides for a tax credit for people buying new passenger cars and light-duty trucks, and now thanks to eleventh hour lobbying efforts by motorcycle groups and manufacturers, federal tax relief will extend to purchasers of new motorcycles as well.

Section 1008 of the legislation includes motorcycles as ?qualified vehicles?, and individuals purchasing a new motorcycle will be allowed to deduct the sales and excise taxes on their 2009 tax returns.

Four senators successfully lobbied for including motorcycles in the compromise measure: Bob Casey, D-Pa.; Christopher Bond, R-Mo., Russell Feingold, D-Wis., and Herb Kohl, D-Wis.

“The issues of consumer confidence and tight credit markets have not evaded motorcycle dealers,” the four senators wrote to congressional leaders who put the finishing touches on the stimulus bill. “The effect of the downturn not only impacts the dealers – it has hurt manufacturers as well.”

Expansion of the tax credit should attract more motorcycle buyers, Feingold said in a joint press release with Kohl. To be eligible for this ?above the line? tax deduction, you must make less than $125,000 ($250,000 for those filing jointly) and purchase a new bike in 2009 for up to $49,500.

MAKING NOISE ABOUT NOISE

As states like New York and New Hampshire wrestle with anti-noise legislation that would prohibit modifications to factory-installed exhaust systems, the Motorcycle Industry Council is seeking to postpone further legislative action pending their development of a new sound test.In comments to the N.H. House Transportation Committee, the MIC stated that they and the Society of Automotive Engineers are finalizing a new stationary sound test, SAE J2825, which will provide a quick, easy, economical, and science-based tool for accurately identifying motorcycles with excessively noisy exhaust systems.

“Our goal is to provide a consistent tool nationwide for identifying excessively loud exhaust systems without failing those that pass the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency federal sound limit,” said Pamela Amette, vice president of the MIC. “This sound test will effectively achieve the sound control goals of New Hampshire, and other states and municipalities, and more so than some of the proposed legislation currently being considered. On a national level, it will eliminate a lot of the confusion and frustration for motorcyclists when they ride through different jurisdictions.”

Amette said that California, numerous local jurisdictions, and Canada have expressed interest in the new test that was developed through extensive sound testing during 2007.

There’s one major question here. What is this level they are proporting to be an easy fix and how will his impact the aftermarket exhaust system industry? Will loud pipes be able to save lives?–Wilburn Roach

GangSPS party
Surveilance security at the Sucker Punch party in Cincy this year.

WEIRD NEWS: MOTORCYCLE SURVEILANCE SYSTEM INSTALLED IN U.K.–A new surveillance system installed on eight routes in Derbyshire, England designed to track movements of motorcyclists on the roads will be operational by Easter.

The technology can tell motorcycles apart from other vehicles, measure their speeds and will be able to read number plates under plans. Data such as the routes taken by individual motorcyclists along with time and date will be collected and kept even if they have committed no offense.

The project has prompted civil rights groups to express grave concerns about the potential for invasion of motorcyclists? privacy.

Speed camera bosses behind the scheme have named it the ?motorcycle data project? and the equipment a ?motorcycle detection system?. It will scrutinize movements of motorcyclists in particular and be switched on to coincide with the start of the riding season in April, they say.

The Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership said the aim was to ?gather intelligence? to ?prevent motorcycle casualties? through measures such as speed warning signs, extra police patrols and safer roadside barriers.

But Isabella Sankey, Director of Policy for the civil rights group Liberty, said: ?The road to massive-scale real-time surveillance is paved with good intentions. We have no problem with ANPR being used to locate vehicles whose owners the police firmly suspect of having committed an offence but it shouldn’t be used as a tool of mass surveillance.?

Did you know Australia is attempting to pass a law requiring a front license plate on all motorcycles, so camera can better catch the image?

DON?T JUST SEE ANTIQUE BIKES?TRY ONE OUT IN DAYTONA–Visitors to Bike Week in Daytona Beach during the first week of March will get a chance to experience history firsthand, thanks to The Antique Motorcycle Club of America. The AMCA will host a display at the Limpnickie Lot, a custom-bike location in South Daytona Beach, that won?t just give visitors a chance to see historic motorcycles?they?ll be able to try them out as well.

In addition to a collection of classic machines for visitors to admire, the AMCA will have two bikes set aside for hands-on demonstrations of decades-old technology. Those machines?a 1948 Indian Chief and a 1939 Harley Davidson Knucklehead?will be set up on stands so that anyone stopping by can try to kick-start them and learn how to operate a ?dead man?s? throttle, hand shift and foot clutch. Those demonstrations will take place all day on Wednesday, March 4.

?There have been a lot of times in the past, where I was out riding old bikes with friends, and whenever we stopped for a bite to eat, or to fill up gas, our group of old bikes would get bombarded by curious people.? said Matt Olsen, youth coordinator for The AMCA. ?I thought that it would be neat to provide the modern motorcycle public with an opportunity to learn about these old machines and to give people a chance to try out a classic machine for themselves.?

Limpnickie

On Friday, March 6, The AMCA will sponsor a class for motorcycles from the Linkert-carburetor era in the Cycle Source Ride-in Bike Show at the Limpnickie Lot. Linkert was the primary supplier of carbs to American motorcycle manufacturers from 1933 to 1965, and the class will be open to Indians, plus Harley Flatheads, Knuckleheads and Panheads, along with any bike that has been retrofitted with these carbs.

The AMCA display will be located in the Limpnickie Lot at the Stone Edge Skate Park, 1848 S. Ridgewood Ave. in South Daytona Beach. For more information, go to www.limpnickielot.com.

Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse’s Biker Fusion Event Announces support of Black Hawk Medevac Units–DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. –February 17th, 2009– Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse and Biker Fusion organizers announced today that this year’s Daytona Bike Week Fusion event and fund-raiser will benefit Black Hawk Medevac units in Afghanistan. The event will be held on Thursday, March 5th at the Dog House on Main Street, Daytona.

Black Hawk Medevac Units include amazing men and women that serve as medics, pilots and crew that save lives by treating and transporting our wounded heroes. When a soldier is wounded, the roar of a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter with its large red cross underneath means they just might survive. The arrival of the Hawk means a soldier knows they are getting out and the Medevac members know the chances of saving a wounded soldier are best if he receives medical attention with a crucial “golden hour”. These heroes see another side of the war up close. They live in remote bases that almost never have any creature comforts including showers.

The funds raised at Biker Fusion will sponsor Soldier’s Angels backpack care packages. Each backpack is approximately $50 hard cost and include logo blanket, sweat pants, logo zipper hooded sweatshirt, logo t-shirt, socks, cotton knit boxers, knit beanie cap, 60 min phone card, toiletry kit in logo bag, snack and never forget coin. Additional items such as computers, ipods, and other ‘cool’ items are also included when funds allow.

Due to the remote locations of the Units, the backpacks will be shipped to a Convoy Support Center that will deliver them. Additional backpacks will be distributed to our wounded heroes that include a handmade blanket, adaptive sweat pants, logo zipper hooded sweatshirt, logo t-shirt, socks, cotton knit boxers, knit beanie cap, global phone card and toiletry kit in logo bag.

sem blackhawk

To raise funds, Biker Fusion will auction off one-of-a-kind Hard Rock Fender Guitars specially designed by event hosts, Ami James, Christian Clayton, Shelly Rossmeyer and Billy Lane. Additionally, Biker Fusion message cards will be available for donations at any level. Kids & Chrome 2008 Raises $120,000 for Children?s Home Society and Sturgis Motorcycle Museum–RAPID CITY, SD ? While we all know there is something about kids that opens people?s hearts, the combination of ?Kids? and ?Chrome? brought folks to not only open their hearts, but their pocketbooks as well. Kids and Chrome Foundation announced this week that its 4th Annual Kids & Chrome benefit dinner and auction event, held during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, raised $120,000 in support of two vital Black Hills non-profit organizations: Children?s Home Society, the ?Kids? in the foundation?s moniker, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, the ?Chrome.?

?The Dakota,? a one-off custom bagger, created for Kids & Chrome by Tom Binyon, of BaggerWorks Custom Touring Motorcycles in Wichita, Kansas, was the featured auction item at this year?s event, bringing $40,000. The 2008 ?Pit Boss,? donated by Lehman Trikes of Spearfish, South Dakota, also topped the list of auction donations, raising $22,000. Additionally, the 2008 Legends Ride?, a celebrity-charity event produced by the Legendary Buffalo Chip to support the mission of Kids & Chrome, raised $38,000 for the foundation, according to Rod Woodruff, Buffalo Chip President and CEO.

?Kids & Chrome provides a very unique, one-of-a-kind platform that unites the eclectic world-wide community of motorcycle enthusiasts, who join us each year during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, for a very philanthropic and genuinely worthwhile cause,? said Jim Burgess, President of the Kids & Chrome Foundation, promoter of Kids & Chrome.

?It?s just a remarkable event,? Burgess continued, ?that gives us a chance to welcome folks around the globe and publicly thank all of our friends in the industry who come together each August in support of Kids & Chrome, Children?s Home Society and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.?

Funding provided by Kids & Chrome supports the therapeutic programming of the Children?s Home Society, a home and school for children with emotional and behavioral issues, many of whom are victims of severe abuse and neglect.

?This event is always a wonderful demonstration of the generosity and compassion so many Rally-goers have at heart,? said South Dakota Lieutenant Governor Dennis Daugaard, who personally welcomed the event?s attendees at the August 6th benefit. ?This year, the dinner and live auction were especially uplifting. From the video presentation to the testimonials, everyone?s spirits were raised.

The next day, the Legends Ride?, hosted by the Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground to benefit Kids & Chrome, added another dimension to the giving.? Affiliated with Children?s Home Society for more than 18 years, Daugaard is particularly familiar with the community?s outstanding commitment to the ?Kids? of Kids and Chrome.

Kids & Chrome?s funding also supports the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame in its mission to preserve the history of motorcycling.

?The dollars raised through the Kids & Chrome Foundation allow the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame to continue to bring the history of motorcycling alive for its visitors,? said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. ?It is our hope to be able to expand the museum in the next few years using proceeds from the Kids & Chrome events. Without this support, plans for expansion would still be only a distant dream.?

The 2008 Kids & Chrome event was supported by the generosity of the motorcycle community as well as local and national event sponsors like Budweiser, the Kids & Chrome title sponsor. Sharing the spotlight were the event’s premiere sponsors: Black Hills Harley-Davidson, the Legendary Buffalo Chip, BIKERNET.COM, Performance Machine, GEICO PowerSports, Black Hills Surgery Center, BaggerWorks, Lehman Trikes, Scott Peterson Motors, Childress Vineyards, State Publishing & Printing, Sturgis Bike Week, Gustafson Builders and KEVN FOX 7.

Next year?s Kids & Chrome benefit dinner and auction is slated for Wednesday, Augsut 5, 2009. For more information and event updates, visit, www.kidsandchrome.com, or contact Ronda Gusinsky, Executive Director, Kids & Chrome Foundation, at 605/716-9190.

MATT OLSEN IS DEDICATED TO THE ANTIQUE MOTORCYCLE CLUB OF AMERICA AND TO BRINGING YOUNG ENTHUSIASTS INTO THE FOLD–I can’t believe that it is already Wednesday, I have been putting in long hours trying to get ahead of the ball so I can have a relaxed trip to Daytona in a couple of weeks. I figured that I won’t have much of a chance to get to a computer while I am on the road so I am going to send you three updates for the upcoming week in different emails for your Thursday news section.

I am sending you a pic of the cams for the 45 contest, they were donated by AAOK in Deltah, Utah. They are really nice, there isn’t any pitting on the lobes and the shafts are not scored. They have been cleaned up, bead blasted and parkerized. All the winner will have to do is set up the endplay.

–Matt Olsen

Matt organized a essay contest with the AMCA to promote kids to become involved in the antique motorcycle craze. Get your kids to check their site and enter the contest. If they win they will be given an antique H-D 45-flathead and taught how to restore it. All the parts for this project have been donated by guys in the industry.–Bandit

Jon Towle, famous artist and road tester for Bikernet.

Dave “Big Deal” Dealhas left the building!–Dave “Big Deal ” Deal passed away this past Thanksgiving. I learned the news from my favorite hot rod magazine. I had just wrote him in November and got no response. I thought he was still ticked at me. This was not the case. I know this is a bike web site, I got the memo. However, there are many that come to Bikernet that were touched by Mr. Deal’s incredible art. Some of us drooled over his cartoons in ” Cartoon Magazine” back in the day, or built his models from Revel way back when. Nobody, and mean NOBODY could draw like this crazy fucker.

A handful of years ago, Concrete Pete learned that I was a life long fan of Deal’s work so he contacted him and told him so. Next thing I know I’m getting an e-mail from Mr. Deal with an original drawing from him. It took me an hour to clean up the shit in my pants. He did this just because I was a working cartoonist and was a fan (kids, see how it use to be?). I sent him some of my stuff back when I was working with ” OL’ Skool Rodz” and received his approval. He signed my guest book at my portfolio web site and even invited me into his home.

To see first hand how the master works would beat the crap out of four years of art school. Before the set date of traveling to his studio, I mentioned my “Nick The Dick” cartoon strip. He requested some samples of the cartoon and I sent them. I received a semi shocking response. “Jon, God did not give you talent to be wasted on such negative crap!”

I was offended by his being offended and we had some words. Game over! A huge opportunity missed on my part (damn you Nick). No respect lost on my end. I was really bummed when I learned of his passing…almost like a piece of my innocent youth had been stolen. Dave’s art has had a big impact on my and many others life. Do yourself a favor and go to his web site to see what I’m talking about…..”Big Deal Art.com”. God bless ya Dave, There will never be another like ya!

BIKERNET VOCABULARY LESSON– The teacher asked the class to use the word fascinate in a sentence. Molly put up her hand and said, ‘My family went to my> granddad’s farm, and we all saw his pet sheep. It wasfascinating.’

The teacher said, ‘That was good, but I wanted you to use the word fascinate, not fascinating’.

Sally raised her hand. She said, ‘My family went to see Rock City and I was fascinated.’

The teacher said, ‘Well, that was goodSally, but I wanted you to use the word ‘fascinate.’

Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher hesitated because she had been burned by Little Johnny before. She finally decided there was no way he could damage the word ‘fascinate’, so she called on him.

Johnny said, ‘My aunt Ginahas a sweater with ten buttons, but her tits are so big she can only fasten eight.’

The teacher sat down and cried.

ama logo

The following is from the AMA…As you may know by now, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) has effectively banned the sale of youth off-highway vehicles (OHVs) as of Feb.

Download the CRS list here.

Still, immediate attention is needed to end this ban on the sale and manufacture of youth model OHVs. In addition to the efforts the AMA is putting in on Capitol Hill, all motorcyclists need to help fight this measure. Here are some quick links to background information and ways you can help reverse this decision:

? Contact your representatives in Congress by using the Take Action button in the Issues and Legislation section of the AMA website.

? Write the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) directly to encourage them to exclude youth model OHVs here.

? Click here for a page that includes suggested copy for a letter you can send to the CPSC.

? Read the AMA press release on this issue here.

? Read the AMA’s comments to the CPSC here.

eherrmann Chicayne Lores RGB

NEW FROM ERIC HERRMANN– Here’s the latest painting from the Compound. 1200 Horsepower got my attention. Hope you enjoy.

?Chicayne?, one of the most famous street machines in the world, is the subject of Eric Herrmann?s latest four month painting project. Anyone remotely interested in cars, knows of this fire breathing, twin turbo, 1200 H.P. 1962 Chevy Biscayne that possesses blinding acceleration, like 60 to 160 mph in under 3 seconds.

?Chicayne? was built by Rad Rides by Troy, for Billet Specialties, the premier Hot Rod supplier in the world. When Billet Specialties wanted a fine art painting created to immortalize this famous vehicle, there was only one choice, Eric Herrmann.

The $35,000.00, four month project, measuring 42? x 48?, took Eric to Troy?s Midwestern shop several times for reference photos and color details.

Wheels were shipped to Eric?s studio so he could match colors perfectly. Just as in the build of the car, nothing was overlooked. Some of the closely inspected details include the lettering on the fuel injectors and serpentine belt.

??I felt I had to do this car justice as far as the technical accuracy of the painting is concerned? states Eric. ?Both Troy and Billet Specialties went to great lengths to build this stunning vehicle.?

Eric is also known for the hidden details within his artwork, and ?Chicayne? has several. I included several flying ?B?s?, a Billet Specialties Logo, Troy?s Logo – The Gear, and a mischievous mouse, says Eric.

The original painting was unveiled to the public for the first time at the Barrett- Jackson Auto Auction 2009, and was covered on Speed TV. Speed TV also covered a work Eric had in progress during the event. Watch for Eric & his art on reruns of The Barrett-Jackson 2009 coverage. Comments on this intricate painting were well received from notables such as GM Corvette Designers, Sherwin Williams Paint Execs, Drag Racing Legends, and Premier Hot Rod Builders.

ILLINOIS STATE GOVERNMENT ATTACKS GUNS–Illinois is trying its best to strip guns out of the hands of citizens. While lawmakers know that they can’t overtly do this .. because of this pesky little thing called the Second Amendment .. they know that enough government regulation will eventually destroy an industry. So Illinois is considering a law to require gun owners to maintain a policy of liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 … this is HB0687, the Firearm Owners ID-Insurance bill :

“Amends the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act. Provides that any person who owns a firearm in this State shall maintain a policy of liability insurance in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person. Provides that a person shall be deemed the owner of a firearm after the firearm is lost or stolen until such loss or theft is reported to the police department or sheriff of the jurisdiction in which the owner resides.

Provides that the Department of State Police shall revoke and seize a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card previously issued under this Act if the Department finds that the person to whom such card was issued possesses or acquires a firearm and does not submit evidence to the Department of State Police that he or she has been issued in his or her name a liability insurance policy in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person. Effective January 1, 2010.”

“When your goal is absolute control over the population controlling the population’s access to weapons is crucial. These politicians know that guns legally owned by law-abiding citizens are not the problem. Remember that government has one power that the rest of us do not have .. government, and only government, can use force to accomplish its goals. We should always be very wary of any politician who exhibits fear at the thought of private citizens having the ability to defend themselves.”

100-Mile Road Ride forALL street legal motorcycles,Broc Glover’s Breathe Easy RideAgainst Cystic Fibrosis–Champions DeCoster and Lawson to join 2nd annual charity motorcycle ride.

February 3, 2009 – TEMECULA, CA – Former motorcycle racing world champions Roger DeCoster and Eddie Lawson are known as two of the toughest men ever to don a racing helmet. Their well-documented exploits on the global racing circuits have filled books, movies, and websites and for any racing fan worth his paddock pass, a chance to simply meet either of them would rank as a lifetime highlight. Chance encounters with these greats routinely involve a quick handshake, sometimes an autograph or snapshot, and that’s it. But the idea of riding a motorcycle with either of these greats? Pure folly. That is until now.

Enter AMA Hall of Fame champion, Broc Glover. In late 2007, Glover and his family learned the tragic news that his then 6-year-old son Dayne was stricken with cystic fibrosis (CF). Now faced with the most important challenge of his life, the 6-time motocross #1 plate holder got immediately to work creating a way to find the money necessary to find a cure for CF and secure a future for young Dayne.

“Nothing I’d ever encountered in my racing career even comes close to the challenges Dayne faces each day with CF,” said Glover. “It’s a battle to help him lead as normal a normal life as possible and I’m very thankful that good friends like Roger DeCoster, Eddie Lawson, and so many other greats from the motorcycle community have reached out to help. With their help last March we were able to kick off the inaugural Breathe Easy Ride Against Cystic Fibrosis and it became a huge success. We raised $86,000 for the CF Foundation and with their help we’ll surpass that amount on March 29th.”

In addition to providing a conduit for CF research funding, Broc Glover’s Breathe Easy Ride Against Cystic Fibrosis has demonstrated once again how caring and compassionate motorcyclists can be. In 2008, hundreds of riders from throughout California converged on Old Town Temecula to participate in the event and fill the CF Foundation coffers.

Despite gloomy morning weather, Glover and his event team stayed the course and staged the event with the confidence that the motorcycle crowd would come rain or shine. “They won’t let us down,” Glover insisted. And he was right. One at a time and in groups both large and small, the riders arrived. By noon when the kickstands went up, the Southern California skies had cleared, the smiles had widened and the ride began.

Easy Ride Against Cystic Fibrosis takes place from 9am-4pm on Sunday, March 29, 2009 in Temecula’s Old Town California Row. AMA Hall of Fame sports announcer Larry “Supermouth” Huffman will get the proceedings going at 10am with pre-ride festivities including rider check-in and registration, prize drawings, raffles, autograph and photo ops, interviews with the stars, food and fun. Attendees, both rider and non-rider alike, are encouraged to bring their cameras (don’t forget fresh batteries and empty flash cards!).

At noon all registered riders will embark on one of three different motorcycle rides: the two 100-mile street options will have intermingling Cruiser and Sportbike routes, and the other a dual-sport ride guided by AMA Hall of Fame off-road champion Scot Harden. All rides will begin and end at the same Old Town Temecula venue. It’s important to emphasize that these rides are not “races” and all riders, regardless of skill level, are invited to participate so long as the rider is aboard a licensed, street-legal motorcycle.

Riders are encouraged to pre-register the event online at www.BreatheEasyRide.com

WEEKLY BIKERNET CODE OF THE WEST SEMINAR– Pass this on to the people who think that new leathers makes them look cool! Have a great ridin’ year

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Life may begin at 40, but it doesn’t get real interesting until about 110 mph

You start the game of life with a full pot o’ luck and an empty pot o’ experience. The object is to fill the pot of experience before you empty the pot of luck.

Motorcycle rally organizers honored in CO, while SC drives them off– Times are tough, so should we push for more tourist business or less? That’s a no-brainer in the Colorado prairie town of Brush, although Myrtle Beach, SC, feels differently.

Myrtle Beach has pulled the plug on the long-standing Harley-DavidsonDealers Association Spring Rally and the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest bikerallies. They say it was just too much for the town to handle. We’ll seehow local merchants feel about that lost income this year in particular. Meanwhile, closer to home, the Brush Area Chamber of Commerce has honoredthe six members of the committee who were responsible for creating last year’ssuccessful, first-time Prairie Biker Rally.

Committee members Dwight Andersen, Ed Churchwell, Dale Ingmire, Ed Sand, Arvin Janzen, and John Sweenie were recently awarded the Chamber’s 2009Spur of the Year award. The event they created brought about 100 motorcyclists to Brush in September and raised about $5,000 for the Chamber. One block of Brush was closed off to all but motorcycles, a People’s Choiceaward was given for the crowd favorite bike, and the movie Easy Rider was screened.

On Saturday of the event there were a couple poker runs, a bike rodeo, and a hog roast. Unlike Myrtle Beach, Brush hopes this becomes an annual event. They welcomethe commerce. Presuming that it is held again this year, the rally is setfor the second weekend in September. That would put it at Sept. 11-13.

Another rally on the prairie Yuma will also be a site for a motorcycle rally this year. ABATE ofColorado Dist. 1 will hold its annual Rally on the Plains Aug. 14-16. I’ll be providing more information about both these rallies as the dates draw nearer.

HELLS ANGELS LAW SUIT–Hells Angels suing California woman for ‘cyberpiracy’ of motorcycle club’s trademarks in domain registrations

(Fresno Bee (CA) Via Acquire Media News Edge) FRESNO, Calif. _ In days gone by, the Hells Angels seemed to follow a legal code not found in any American law book. Anyone who crossed it would face judgment in shades of black and blue.

Now, the famed and feared motorcycle club is seeking a more refined path to justice: It is suing a Visalia, Calif., woman in federal court, alleging “cyberpiracy” and trademark infringement.

The club says Fawn Myers illegally registered more than 20 Internet domain names associated with the Hells Angels and then placed them up for auction on eBay.

Myers, the club says, registered domain names such as ha-mc.com and 81ca.com through the Internet hosting service GoDaddy.com, which is also named in the suit. It was filed this month in U.S. District Court in Fresno, Calif.

The number 81, the suit says, has not only long been an identifier and pseudonym for the Hells Angels, but it also has been used on licensed merchandise such as hats, beanies, bikinis, pins and belt buckles. The letter “H” is the eighth in the alphabet; the letter “A” the first.

In her eBay listings, the Hells Angels allege, Myers specifically mentions the association of the domain names with the motorcycle club. The club says that amounts to trademark infringement and cyberpiracy, among other violations of federal law.

The Hells Angels is showing no mercy in its legal demands.

The motorcycle club wants a court judgment that Myers violated its rights under federal and state statutes. It wants the domain names to be transferred to the club. And they want any profits derived from the domain names, as well as $100,000 in damages for each domain name found to belong to the club.

One legal expert thinks the Hells Angels might have a good case. David S. Welkowitz, an expert in trademark law at the Whittier Law School in Southern California, said lawsuits such as the one filed by the Hells Angels are common _ as are victories for the trademark owners.

Welkowitz said the key question is whether Myers has any legitimate claim to the domain names, and whether she can withstand a federal cybersquatting statute and prove she didn’t make a “bad faith attempt to profit” from the domain names’ association with the Hells Angels.

Myers wonders who the motorcycle club might seek out next. He said the domain name hamc.org belongs to the Hebrew Academy of Morris County in New Jersey, while the name hamc.com belongs to the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, N.D.

BIKERNET NEWS FLASH – ED HARDY HELMETS FROM BIKERS CHOICE, MYRTLE BEACH NO-GO, NO MOTORSPORTS FOR KIDS, SUPPORT THE TROOPS ISSUE FROM CYCLE SOURCE AND MORE.

Leadshot
Philzee said he fell in the parking lot…. I asked him how many guyswere chasing him….Note the girl on the right. That’s Colleen Swartz, the amazing photographer.

Hey,

I’m supposed to take Niacin at night to improve my good cholesterol and it works. Last night I took a half dose and a tab of acid. I needed a mood swing. I woke up this morning my old outlaw self. Who cares about the economy as long as we can ride and chase women? What the hell do we need all this material crap for anyway?

Let’s hit the news. I’ve got a new bottle of Jack Daniels waiting for me, my 5-Ball factory racer is coming together and the sun is shinning. Hell, tomorrow Doc, from Heavy Duty magazine in Australia, and I are riding out to Sierra Madre to straddle vintage bikes, like a 1912 Indian and a 1915 H-D. That should give him a rush before returning to his little island in the Pacific.

2009 V-TWIN EXPO REPORT– Here’s a very brief report on our meetings in Cincy. I attended and was on the panel of three seminars attended by between 50-70 folks each. In each case the subject of a SEMA council was bridged successfully. During our meeting on Sunday, with a room of 70 industry company owners and bike builders, we discussed a SEMA council. I was the moderator. The President of the MRF, Kirk Willard, spoke about legislative issues all over the world, Seth Doulton, a 30-year SEMA member and a member of ARMO for 8-years spoke about his SEMA experience, and we had two members of the MIC V-Twin committee there to discuss MIC goals, Ted Sands, from Performance Machine and Grady Pfeiffer from GH marketing.

At the end of the meeting every individual in the room lifted a hand in support of this effort. I will begin on a proposal this week.

Brassballsbike
Dar, at Brass Balls, won the V-Twin award for the best Production Bike.

I’m very encouraged after this weekend. I believe we have the opportunity to bring SEMA a substantial motorcycle network which will include the motorcycle aftermarket industry, the MRF with 250,000 members and 55 active state rights organizations, NCOM a similar organization and 30-years of legislative experience. I believe our challenges are similar to the aftermarket automotive side and we can help each other and deliver a stronger, more unified voice to legislative bodies.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON DEBUTS NEW HOG MAGAZINE–Harley-Davidson has taken the best of Enthusiast and HOG Tales magazines and combined them into the all-new HOG magazine, a world-class magazine for a world-class brand.

Since the first publication of Harley-Davidson’s Enthusiast in 1916, more about motorcycling and the world in general has changed than has stayed the same. But throughout those 90-odd years, one thing has remained true: Harley-Davidson has produced magazines that give its riders a peek behind the curtain, informing them about its products, educating them about riding, and sharing their stories with legions of Harley riders around the world. In 1983, Enthusiast was joined by Hog Tales magazine, which grew from a single-sheet newsletter into a bimonthly publication serving a diverse audience of more than one million Harley Owners Group members internationally.

Building on a nearly century-old tradition, HOG magazine incorporates the best features of Enthusiast and Hog Tales in a bigger, bolder magazine that has the space to take enthusiasts deeper into the story than ever before, with more pages and better photography.

The premier edition of HOG incorporates many familiar features from its predecessors: like the Enthusiasts section, where enthusiasts can share stories and photos from riding adventures; great riding features; product reviews; the Intake section and Exhaust column; inspiring custom motorcycles; riding tips; From the Archives; and more. There are also new features like an expanded calendar section that encourages enthusiasts to seek out destinations for their next ride, inspirational profiles of Harley riders, and even more in-depth riding reviews of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

During the past year, event organizers and city officials have battled over new ordinances aimed at stopping two popular spring rallies ? BUT WAIT, A LETTER FROM THE MYRTLE BEACH MAYOR–Myrtle Beach is no longer the location for two long-running motorcycle events. After many years, our residents grew weary of three weeks of noise and traffic congestion each May, and they asked City Council to end the events. As a result, the Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Spring Rally and the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest will not be held in Myrtle Beach.

This was a difficult decision. Myrtle Beach welcomes visitors year-round, but the giant motorcycle rallies simply grew too large. Our staff, residents and businesses strained to keep up with these huge single-focus events. It may surprise you, but our economy is much healthier with a fully diversified visitor base, instead of a concentration on one or two extremely large events.

Please know that Myrtle Beach is not anti-biker or anti-motorcycle. We want folks to come on the vehicle of their choice and enjoy all of the things Myrtle Beach has to offer. We are ending the motorcycle-related rallies because they grew too big and lasted too long. The huge rallies even kept visitors away from Myrtle Beach, and that’s not good.

For everyone’s safety and welfare, City Council has added a few new rules and regulations. We believe these new laws will make Myrtle Beach a safer and more friendly destination. For example, with your safety in mind, we now require that all motorcycle riders and passengers wear a helmet and eye protection. We also have a 1:00 to 6:00 a.m. curfew for everyone under 18. These and other rule changes are explained on this web site.

Thank you for understanding. As you know, Myrtle Beach is a great place to visit, and we welcome you at any time. I look forward to your next visit and am confident that you will have a great time in Myrtle Beach!Sincerely, John Rhodes Mayor

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE ACCOMPLISHED–Guggenheim curator Ultan Guilfoyle, describes inventor John Britten, as “the New Zealander who stood the world of racing-motorcycle design on its head” and in a poll compiled by the world’s leading motorcycle writers to rank the Motorcyclist of the Millennium, he was placed equal with the four founders of Harley-Davidson.

But a decade earlier Britten was a Kiwi cliche, tinkering away in his backyard shed convinced that he could re-design his Ducati racing bike to make it go faster. Triumph at Daytona and world speed records on a homemade super-bike were just dreams.

Christchurch filmmaker Harry Ruffell had noticed what Britten was trying to do and thought there might be a film in it. John called Harry and told him he was about to start work on what would probably be his last bike. Despite lack of funding, Harry took a punt and began filming in 1990/91.

As the pile of film got higher, Harry realised that the enormity of the task of turning the footage into a coherent documentary was beyond his experience. He approached producer Ian Taylor and director Allan Baddock. They immediately saw potential in the story, but Allan says getting broadcasters to recognise how extraordinary the story was took some doing.

“Taylor and I spent a couple of years pitching and chasing funding. We got repeatedly tossed off with inspired insights such as: ?So it’s a motorbike film … nobody watches motorbike films’ and ?yeah … might make 10 minutes for one of the sports programmes’. Our line was that it wasn’t about bikes … it was about Kiwis.”

The tide turned when TV3’s Geoff Steven picked up the project for the channel’s new local documentary slot Inside New Zealand.

Allan continues: “I went to Christchurch and spent a couple of weeks living with John and the Ruffells and shooting the interviews with Kirsteen and John’s long-suffering support crew, reconstructions and linking footage, with Harry as cameraman. I then came back to Dunedin and worked with Marilyn McArthur to edit what we could from the footage.”

With no firm idea of what the end result would be Harry had shot nearly 100 hours of observational footage.

Allan: “It [the footage] was two mates in a garage. But it gave Marilyn some real headaches. In truth, it became a labour of love. Marilyn and I spent god knows how many weeks in the edit suite. If we’d had to do it within a normal production schedule, the film wouldn’t have seen an audience – but it was too good a story to let go.”

The end result is an engaging celebration of Kiwi ingenuity, with the relationship between John and his long-suffering yet fiercely loyal wife Kirsteen being particularly well drawn.

The only real downside of the film’s low budget was that the producers were unable to properly document John’s dramatic breakthrough at Daytona in 1992. This was shown via photographs and narration, which dilutes the impact of the climax somewhat, although it was in keeping with the shoestring, Kiwi-can-do spirit John epitomised.

Despite the fact that John was largely unknown at the time it screened, the film gained good ratings in its slot. By the time he died of cancer a year later (1995), John Britten had become a household name.

TV3 screened Backyard Visionary again as a tribute to a new Kiwi hero. His bike is now on permanent exhibit at NZ’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa. In 1995 an award was named in his honour by the New Zealand Design Institute to recognise excellence in design.

GET UNSPRUNG WITH W8LESS ROTORS’ NEW FORGED COMPOSITES–With applications for Harley-Davidsons and various metric motorcycles and ATVs, the forged rotors are made from a metal matrix composite. The material is said to be tough and wear-resistant in addition to being much lighter than stock.

Ray Wheeler, the main man behind W8less, said the rotors are bulletproof and are the ?only forged composite rotors on the planet.?

The word from Wheeler is that rotors have been tested in accordance with DOT FMVSS 122-02 regulations and exceeded all standards regarding stopping distance, brake line pressure, wet weather performance, fade, wear, and heat rejection.

They come in full-floating and solid configurations and feature a machined, a polished or an anodized finish.

TOP PICK AT INDY DEALER SHOW–Pattie Waters of Off-Road.com said:

We caught up with WORCS Kawasaki Pro racer Brandon Brown as he walked the floor at Indy (actually, we yanked him away from lunch), and asked him for his top picks. What’s the coolest you’ve seen?

He didn’t have to hesitate on the first one – he drug us immediately to the W8LESS Technologies booth.

FIRST Forged composite brake rotors in the world. With over 5 years of R&D behind it, the first rotors rolled out for Harley applications about a year ago. With seven unique patents pending, demand told them they had an immediate hit on their hands. With the ability to get one smaller rotor each time they cut the center out of a larger one, they soon found a use for the blanks, and whipped out ATV rotors. Now, their goal is to have a forged composite brake rotor, dimpled or slotted, for “everything that rolls.”

Made in the USA – and you don’t have to sacrafice style; they have lines that include full floating and solid rotors; spoke and solid designs; machined, polished and anodized finishes.

Brown was immediatley taken with the substantial weight savings, and if they are as indestructible as they claim, he says they’ll be on his bikes for sure.

SUPPORT THE TROOPS ISSUE FROM CYCLE SOURCE–My good friends from Cycle Source Magazine are doing a cool thing there!Read what it’s about, do your thing or at least fwd it to whomever you think! Cheers, Svenmeister

Cycle Source’s next issue will be a “Support The Troops’ issue. We are asking that if any of you have employees, friends or family that are currently in the military, that you send us a photo of them (preferrably with their bike). We are also asking that the person writes a brief paragraph on what motorcycling means to them (50-100 words). If any of them have been recently over seas, they can talk about how it felt to come home to the motorcycling community.

All text and images can be emailed to this address and the absolute deadline will be a week for today, Friday the 20th. If you have any questions, please let me know. We appreciate as much help as you can give.

MOTORCYCLES BANNED!– Went to the Honda Powerhousedealership this weekend and they have pulled their youth bikes from theshowroom floor. They can’t even sell parts for these bikes, atvs, etc. This is serious!

URGENT Call to Action by MX Sports

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has put a ban on youth motorcyclesand ATVs as of this past Tuesday. This was done because of lead in certainparts of the motorcycles and atvs. We need everyoneʼs help on getting thisban lifted so sell, ride, and race these motorcycles and ATVs.

Dear Industry Leaders, Racers, Fans and Enthusiasts,

Yesterday, a law went into effect prohibiting the sale of minicycles to children under the age of 13 as a result of the lead content in the machines (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, Title I, Section 101). This law, which arguably applies to both motorcycles and ATVs, treats any children’s product that contains more lead than thelimit established by law as a banned hazardous substance.

We have already begun to experience the devastating consequences of this new legislation upon our sport, as OEMs have already pulled these machines from their showroom floors. Youth racing is the foundation of our sport. That is when most of you fell in love with motorcycles in the first place, only to grow up to bring your own kids back to the racetracks. Only now, they can’t ride.

On behalf of MX Sports (Loretta Lynn’s), Racer Productions (GNCC), and ATVPG (ATV Amateur Nationals), we are extremely concerned with the short- and long-range effects of this new legislation, as the first rounds in all of our various series are less than two weeks away, and all include classes for youth racers under the age of 13. But it’s not just ourevents – WORCS, NMA, Mini Os, SETRA, etc., are all adversely impacted.

It is our opinion that the new law is inapplicable to off-highway motorsports, as neither motorcycles nor ATVs have the potential for ingestion, and lead from motorcycles is not likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream or present a health hazard. Let’s face it – when was the last time someone swallowed a motorcycle? Any other interpretation would be silly. Be that as it may, the law will continue to adversely affect our industry unless and until an exemption is granted.

Presently, there is a petition for an immediate temporary exemption pending before the Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”)filed by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) on behalf of the OEMs, distributors, and industry associations. This petition, if granted, would enable our industry to move forward this racing season while the applicability of the law to the off-highway industry is determined.

What can you do?

A form letter for submission to the CPSC in support of the petition for exemption is attached as prepared by the MIC. The letter will also be available this weekend at the Indy tradeshow. Simply print out one copy for each person in your family and submit it ASAP. In the meantime, AMA is preparing a letter for submission by its membership to the CPSC. Be on the lookout for that one as well.

Also, an electronic form letter has been prepared by State Representative Tom Self of Missouri. Please go his website at www.tomself.com. Just fill in your name and address and hit “Submit” to register your support. Please submit this letter on behalf of every member of your family – regardless of age.

What else can you do?

Contact your congressmen and senators; let them know that this legislation will have the unintended consequences of crippling an entire industry.

Surely, it could not have been the spirit or intent of the new law to apply to motorcycles or bicycles (which apparently have lead in the brake cables). Time is of the essence. The very future of our sport and of our industry depends on this. We must support the pending petition before the commencement of the national racing season.

Please give this matter your immediate attention, and forward this letter to EVERY PERSON available ASAP.
