Moose Jaw Toy Run 13 Sept 08 085

FROM THE UNCLE MONKEY ARCHIVES–I wave. It is a habit that my wife says I need to stop but I still do it. It started growing up on the farm where everyone waved to everyone they met on the road. For the record I only waved to people I knew so no that wasn’t me waving from the tractor at you, a complete stranger, like an idiot.

As a biker I wave to my fellow riders as a sign of respect. A bond is shared between me and the other rider out on the road, battling cages and the elements. I’m not picky; I wave to everyone on two wheels even though I?ve been told as a Harley rider I should only wave to other Harleys. I say all riders deserve respect. They are dealing with the same things that I do so I wave to everyone. We seem to understand the brotherhood of the road.

There are lots of riders who don?t wave back. Perhaps they are new riders who have yet to be taken under the wing of a veteran rider who will share the codes of the road with them. They don?t have someone to teach him or her the rights and wrongs. Mind you after watching more then a few people bobbing and weaving as they drag their feet across the intersection I’m not so sure I want them to remove their white knuckled hands from the handlebars to wave to me. Maybe my wife is right. There just is simply too many of us on the roads now a days for me to be waving to everyone we meet.

I try to get a few clicks on my bike most days after work. After battling a back injury for a couple of years now it’s nice to be out back on the road waving to my fellow riders. My route usually includes at least a couple passes down the main drag in my small town. I’m amazed at all the new bikes I see standing in the parking lot of Tim Horton’s, Canada’s premier coffee chain. It is nice to have a good cup of Joe after riding and there is never a shortage of people in the parking lot. My favourite is the couple who show up decked out head to toe in full Harley riding gear including chaps … driving their Ford Harley Davidson truck. I try not to judge them but I think they are missing out on something. So if you are wondering who that is waving at you, it?s just me saying ?Hello good friend.?

Ex-FHP trooper accused of sexual battery–Police say he coerced driver after accident.

PALM SPRINGS – A former Florida Highway Patrol trooper arrested on allegations that he followed a woman to her home, made her strip naked and then coerced her to have sex with him to avoid a traffic citation or a trip to jail — was ordered held on $105,000 bond today.

Ariel D. Valentin, 31, was taken into custody at about 2 p.m. Friday after an investigation into the alleged May 13 assault. He resigned from the FHP on Wednesday after five years in Troop L, which covers six counties, including Palm Beach and Broward.

According to police, the woman said Valentin pulled her over after she was involved in a minor car accident near her home in Palm Springs. After he told the other driver to leave the scene, the woman said she told Valentin that both drivers were fine and she wanted to leave, pointing to her home nearby.

She said Valentin asked her whether she minded that he search her and she agreed, getting out of her car and turning her pockets inside-out, according to police. He said he needed to search her further and suggested going into her home, according to the interview.

The woman told police she was “bawling her eyes out” because her registration was expired and she did not want to get in trouble. She said Valentin told her “stop crying and don’t worry, you are not going to get in trouble. Just do what I say.”

Once they were inside her house, the woman said Valentin told her to remove her clothes and then coerced her into having sex, according to police. She also told police that she felt like an idiot, but was “scared of going to jail” and at one point in the encounter asked Valentin what was going on.

The woman retrieved a used condom from her toilet after Valentin left. She went to the hospital the following day, where she contacted police and a doctor performed a rape examination.

When first interviewed about the incident, Valentin told Palm Springs police that he simply followed the woman to her nearby home and issued her a citation. He said he did not enter the house.

When police informed him that they recovered a used condom, Valentin still denied having sex with the woman, but later said the two had consensual sex.

He is charged with sexual battery and bribery and was being held at the Palm Beach County Jail.

BRYAN SMITH RIDES HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO SPRINGFIELD MILE WIN–Coolbeth Bounces Back to Take Second in AMA Grand National Twins Opener.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (May 24, 2009) ? Moroney’s Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Bryan Smith made a last-lap pass to win the opening round of the 2009 AMA Grand National Twins Championship on the Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The defending Grand National Twins champion, Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth, finished second, trailing Smith at the finish line by just 0.046 seconds.

Smith was the top qualifier for the 26-lap main, and was in the mix during the first 20 laps, during which the race was red-flagged to a stop once for rain and twice for crashes. The final red flag for a crash set up a five-lap sprint for the win. Coolbeth had been stuck at the back of the pack on a motorcycle that was not running well, but after the break the performance of his factory Harley-Davidson XR750 cleared up. On the re-start Coolbeth joined a lead pack that included Smith, Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Jared Mees, Latus Harley-Davidson/Screamin? Eagle rider Joe Kopp, Chris Carr Racing/Lancaster Harley-Davidson rider Chris Carr and Nick Cummings. Smith gambled by taking a low line on the backstretch of the last lap to draft past the pack, and carried his lead out of the fourth turn with enough momentum to hold off Coolbeth. Carr finished third, followed by Mees, Cummings and Kopp.

?We just came up a little short at the end,? said Coolbeth, who trailed Smith by half a bike length at the finish. ?But considering how things were going for us tonight, second place is a great finish this time. For most of the race the motorcycle was running poorly and I was just riding around at the back trying to stay out of everyone?s way, and then after that last red flag, the Screamin? Eagle Harley-Davidson felt great and I was back in it. Bryan made a great move and I didn?t quite have enough to get him back.?

Smith previously won at Springfield in 2006.

?My team gave me a great Harley-Davidson to ride tonight,? said Smith, ?but it took a bit of a gamble there at the end to get the lead. I figured it would be close but it worked out.?

With his win and a victory in the Dash for Cash sprint, Smith leads the 9-event 2009 AMA Grand National Twins series with 28 points, followed by Coolbeth with 16 points and Carr with 15 points.

The 2009 AMA Grand National Twins Championship will next race on June 20 on the Volunteer Speedway half-mile, in Bulls Gap, Tenn.

The Screamin’ Eagle Flat Track team is sponsored by Matco Tools.

DRAWING LESSON FROM BIKERNET ART INSTITUTE–Probably what you’re noticing in this drawing is the looseness. It’s almost falling apart!

The actual drawing technique itself has evolved over the courseof the build of the 5 Ball Racer. I’ve tried to give them the lookof the Benday process invented by Benjamin Day.

It uses dotsof a consistent size and gives a beautiful range of values thatworked well on newsprint. If you followed the Buzz Sawyer comicstrip created by Roy Crane in the L.A. Examiner when you werekid, that was done using Benday. On the artists end of it there werespecial papers that when wetted with an emulsifier (toxic no doubt)would reveal textures consisting of tiny dots which did not requireexpensive printing plates to reproduce.

Later on zip-a-tone arrivedand you would press down the semi-transparent sheets over yourinked line drawing and then cut out the shapes as needed to createshading (values). Tedious work requiring a lot of white out, boxesof number eleven Exacto blades and late nights.

Dick Allenridingaway

I’ve tried to duplicatethat look by using a cartridge brush pen (Pentel FP10) for the linework over the original pencil drawing (HB pencil) on smooth finish2 ply Bristol board and then adding the halftone effect (the shading)using a Derwent colorsoft pencil (Black C650). The important thingis to decide on the direction of the light source while doing the originalpencil drawing and sticking with it all the way through.

Survey Sez: Motorcycles Going Mainstream–If riding makes you think you’re an edgy outsider, think again: theMotorcycle Industry Council’s latest survey suggests that bikes are moremainstream than ever.

The study found that the number of motorcycles owned and used in America hasgrown 19 percent since 2003, to a total of 10.4 million. Last year, 25million people “swung a leg over a bike,” a 7 percent increase over the sametimeframe. And Gen Y riders, once outnumbered by Baby Boomers, now eclipsetheir elders by a factor of two to one– a promising sign for the future ofmotorcycling.

Also of note is the fact that more new bikes than used arebeing purchased (despite a downturn in overall sales

As for the reasons why we ride, theMIC finds that motorcycles are used more for transportation than everbefore; getting from A to B is now the #2 motivation for using two wheels. The study suggests that fuel prices, environmental concerns, and conveniencemight be a few of the reasons why.

Transforming The Market! Scorpion?s EXO 900 Is This Summer?s Triple-Feature Blockbuster– (Lake Forest, CA May 13, 2009) There is a new blockbuster transforming the way riders think about helmets this summer. Looking for the safety and protection of a full face helmet, combined with the convenience of a modular/flip-up lid, but want it as a light weight ? open face for that trip to Sturgis or the Four Corners Rally? That used to mean you had to buy three different helmets ? not an option when everyone is looking for more bang for their buck in these tough economic times. Enter Scorpion?s EXO 900 TransformerHelmet?.

?Why can?t we have one helmet that does it all,? questioned Scorpion?s Head Stinger, VP Eric Anderson. With that basic design brief in mind, Scorpion?s engineers started with the aero-tuned advanced composite engineered full face shell, complete with its built-in retractable SpeedView internal sun visor and then set about transforming the market by making it a modular.

Now the entire chinbar and exclusive no-fog EverClear shield section flips up as one piece. But wait! There?s more? as the TV pitchmen always remind us. The safety and security of the composite engineered shell is combined with a state-of-the-art dual density EPS liner to absorb maximum energy. As a flip-up, or even in its open face configuration, the shell meets or exceeds all DOT and ECE 22-05 safety standards.

In addition to passing the protection test, Scorpion?s KwikWick washable, moisture – wicking comfort liner helps keep you cool in any of the three configurations. Speaking of cool, the ease in which the helmet transforms from a full face to and open face version (complete with peak sunvisor in ? mode) is positively seamless! Whether it is swapping out the SpeedShift quick-change outer faceshield or the entire front half of the helmet, the EXO 900 makes its transformation from ? open face to full face modular and back again in less than 10 seconds?and without tools!

Another innovative design feature shared with its ?standard? brethren is the new AIRFIT cheek pad inflation system to ensure the perfect fit for the TransformerHelmet in any mode of attack. But the biggest deal about this blockbuster TransformerHelmet may be the price. Unlike most of the modulars on the market, the ticket for the EXO-900?s triple feature is under $270. Scorpion even offers a full three- year warranty! Three thumbs up for the new three-way helmet.

MSRP: $269.95 in Gloss Black $279.95 in Matte Anthracite & Hyper Silver Join Team Scorpion! More information about the full range of ScorpionExo Helmets and Scorpion Sports, Inc.?s complete ScorpionExoWear line can be found at www.ScorpionUSA.com.

skully ld bag

Garage Leathers Introduces the ?Skully? Solo Bag —New Jersey, USA, May 29, 2009 ? Hot on the heels of the success and popularity of its solo leather bag for rigid, Softail, Sportster, and Dyna style motorcycles, Garage Leathers has announced the introduction of a new, larger bike bag.

Dubbed the ?Skully? for a distinctive skull and crossbones brand on the front of the bag, the new Garage Leathers offering is 20 percent larger ? due to a longer length — than their popular original solo bag. Like its sibling solo, the new Skully bag is made from sturdy 10-oz leather and is handcrafted in New Jersey, USA.

Other new and improved features on Garage Leathers Skully solo motorcycle bag are hidden quick-release buckles and four heavy nylon mounting straps. The Skully solo bag is available for $235 in classic black and vintage brown finishes.

?The crew at Garage Leathers is made up of very avid motorcycle riders,? said company President Robert Camardo, ?so we make products that we would want to see on our bikes and we thoroughly test our designs to be sure they?re road worthy.?

Camardo reported that, while the original Garage Leathers solo bag continues to be very much sought after, some riders asked for a bag with a little more room for longer trips. The bag is 15.5 inches long on the longest side and 11 inches wide.

skully ld2 bag on bike

?We wanted to be sure our customers could get what they want and need from Garage Leathers,? he said, ?so we developed the bigger Skully bag over the last several months.?

?We ride hard and so do the folks who use our bags,? Robert states, ?and we made sure Garage Leathers bags will hold up to whatever the highway can throw at them. We will not offer a bag that we wouldn?t want to see on our own motorcycles. The Skully more than meets the ?old school cool? test.?

In addition to the new Skully bag, Garage Leathers offers a large variety of bags for all types of motorcycles and in a number of finishes. To see the full line of Garage Leathers products and to order online, go to www.GarageLeathers.com. Hey,

The news is kicking our butts. We need a staff of at least a half dozen mad motorcycle journalists to keep pace with the news flying at our building. It comes in the mail, via fax, e-mails, Fedex packages and the UPS. What the dogs don’t chew we use.

Before I begin the editing/cutting process this puppy is 100 pages long. That’s the equivalent of a sizeable magazine in a day. Okay, I’ll shut up and get started. Then I’ve got to tear the 5-Ball Factory Racer down for paint and powder. Plus I need to start the final publishing process for my first Chance Hogan book. We’ve set a goal of having copies delivered in July.

On a more serious note, you’ll stumble across freedom issues, control problems and hopefully an item or two that will motivate you to become involved in motorcycle rights. We need your help. Let’s hit the news:

ECONOMISTS SEE RECESSION ENDING IN ’09– By Lucia Mutikani.

WASHINGTON (May 27) – The U.S. recession is set to end “soon,” but continued job losses and plunging house prices point to an economic recovery that will be more moderate than those experienced in previous downturns, a survey showed.

The survey of 45 professional forecasters released by the National Association of Business Economists (NABE) on Wednesday found almost three-quarters expected the economic downturn to end by the third quarter of this year.

The remaining saw the turning point delayed until either the last quarter of this year or the first three months of 2010. None of the respondents believed the recession, now in its 17th month, would extend beyond the first quarter of 2010. “While the overall tone remains soft, there are emerging signs that the economy is stabilizing,” said NABE President Chris Varvares.

Business economists look for the recession to end soon, but that the economic recovery is likely to be considerably more moderate than those typically experienced following steep declines.” Recent economic data have suggested that the intensity of the housing-led downturn was starting to ease as some of the government’s record $787 billion package of spending and tax cuts started to filter through the economy. Over two-thirds of respondents in the NABE survey forecast home sales bottoming by mid-year, with 60 percent predicting a floor for housing starts within the same time frame.

MISSOURI HELMET LAW EXEMPTION GOES TO GOVERNOR

The Missouri legislature has passed a bill modifying Missouri?s mandatory helmet law to exempts persons 21 years of age or older from wearing protective headgear except when operating or riding motorcycles or motortricycles upon interstate highways.

Over the past twenty years proposals to repeal the mandatory helmet law have been controversial, but this year’s measure to simply modify the law received little debate in either chamber. The House gave the bill final approval Wednesday, Apr 29 on a vote of 93-65. The bill easily passed the Senate earlier, with a 23-6 vote.

The measure now goes to Governor Jay Nixon for his final signature or veto. The helmet provision was amended onto SCS/SB 202, an act that provides that operating a motorcycle, in and of itself, shall not be considered evidence of comparative negligence in accident claims. The act also provides that when investigating an accident or settling an automobile insurance policy claim, no insurer, agent, producer, or claims adjuster of an insurer shall assign a percentage of fault to a party based upon the sole fact that the party was operating a motorcycle in an otherwise legal manner. The effective date would be August 28, 2009, and the helmet provision would expire in five years under a sunset clause.

Steve Carroll of Hannibal, MO, a spokesman for FORR-MO (Freedom of the Road Riders of Missouri) said passage of the bill is the result of a growing movement. “It’s been a long time coming — in the educational process — and I think it’s long overdue,” he said.

Senator Luann Ridgeway, R-Smithville, who sponsored the bill in the Senate, said the helmet law was tantamount to a ?nanny state making safety choices for other people.? Pointing to other injury-prone activities, such as skiing, horseback riding and even riding in a car, she asked why the state doesn’t require helmets for those. “Where do we draw the line in terms of a caretaker state?” she said.

House sponsor Rep. Gary Dusenberg, R-Blue Springs, also said it was a freedom issue. The people the bill affects can “go off to war and carry guns under the flag of our country,” said Dusenberg, a former highway patrol officer.

In 1999, then-Gov. Mel Carnahan vetoed a similar bill. Governor Nixon has refused to comment on the bill, but if signed into law Missouri would join 30 other states that allow most adult riders to choose regarding helmet use. Only two of the eight states surrounding Missouri mandate helmet use at all times. Neither Iowa nor Illinois has a helmet law.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND VINTAGE RACING REPORT– Yo Bandit, Hope your weekend went better than mine, as a fellow USN Veteran, I salute you sir!…and all Veterans. I walked away from this weekend?.some didn?t.

Two deaths this Friday, a female racer and a safety worker. RIP and condolences to their families. I have friends who knew the worker, and were also working the next corner. He was instructed to cross the track to remove a dead bird. He did so. Coming back across there was a mix up. I was told, if when he saw the oncoming bike, he would have stopped moving and stood still, possibilities of no incident were there?..but that aint what happened?.collision killed them both?..I knew about it before I arrived Friday afternoon. The news vulture rigs were lined up at the front gate when I arrived?.vultures I say?..sad.

I blew my bike up in the pits Friday?.yeah, don?t make me say it again, please. Broke a ring or something in a cylinder?.not top end (I wish). By the end of first practice Saturday, my bike was cannabalized?.carbs, throttle on one bike, shocks on another?.feeding the monsters.

Saturday rain was the theme of the day. My pit partner, Dean Middleton arrived early sat morning. He heard of my dilemma, and instantly offered me a ride in a bump up race?.what a guy!

CY 418

Heres a pic of me on Deans bike, # 418?.what a sweet machine it is?check out the front brake!!! I know now what it feels like to have brakes! I rode his bike in a downpour?.all I could think about was ?OK, you?ve already destroyed one bike this weekend, lets not make your buddies bike the second!!!?

barber 109

Here is another pic from this weekend. It adds some good perspective to things?.check out the elevation change and think about 80mph or so, cresting that blind ridge. The 109 is a beautiful Seely framed 750 Norton?.the guy is good?.BUT?my boy Dean got by him on the 418 Honda 350!!! Passed him and was stretching it out when the red flag flew. This causes the results to go back a lap, and cost Dean 3rd place?..bummer.

Jennings GP this Saturday, 5/30.. I?m also purchasing a new bike. During bikeweek races, a friend and fellow competitor, Steve Staser (Steve-O), asked me to come by his pit?..Steve is an old hand at this, and very fast in his mid 60s, he is also a WERA official?.I went ?Utttoooo, what have I done now? Someone protest?…..? ?So I go over, and he says? Let me be clear, my bike (A Honda 350, unlimited modified like mine and 418) is not for sale to the public?.only to you Charlie. I?ve watched you ride and get better, but you are not equipped, and you should be. I?m retiring and want to sell YOU my bike. I think if you would have been on MY bike at Daytona?..we woulda won??..I was stunned?.Steve-O?s bike is a former Daytona winner, National Title and numerous race winner?..I could never catch him. He is bringing it to Jennings and is going to crew for me with set-up, etc?.what he wants for the bike is near HALF of its worth?..I hit the 401K J ?..wifeee doesn’t know yet.

I will keep you posted. Your article on the state of the Vintage Bike Market was well received by numerous Vintage racers, thanx.

BIKERNET FLORIST STUMBLES INTO BIKERNET STAFF BARBER SHOP–After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you , I’m doing community service this week.’ The florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you , I’m doing community service this week.’ The cop was happy and left the shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I can not accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’ The Congressman was very happy and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

CustomEconomy

THE CHANGING WORLD OF CUSTOM MOTORCYCLES–I think we?re all painfully aware of our country?s current economic condition. The recession certainly has not been kind to iconic motorcycle companies such as Harley-Davidson.

It has become increasingly difficult for riders to purchase brand spanking new Harleys to keep up with the Jones?. Although new bike sales aren?t what they used to be, I have noticed a new trend on the horizon; customizing existing Harleys.

A year or two ago the market was flooded with used motorcycles. Not so much lately. There?s a new crowd interested in those vintage and vintage looking bikes. These are the twenty-something, grunged out, former punks and skaters. They are buying, building and re-customizing anything and everything vintage or vintage appearing.

Young or old, the current trend is to use and improve upon what you?ve got. I think I might even be inclined to dub the builders and fixer uppers ?almost green? since many are hitting swap meets and internet auction sites looking for original and unusual recyclable parts for their projects. Fortunately, there are also lots of aftermarket parts available to help with those hard to find items.

I find it ironic that in the early 2000?s builders would laugh at me for thinking whitewalls were cool, twin 21s were the shit and a Knucklehead was more than an insult. The trend at that time was to build bikes with single sided swingarms, 300 plus tires, high priced futuristic looking billet parts, hubless wheels, and outrageous rakes among other things.

Spending habits of Americans have changed. Most of us are content reverting back to the old school motorcycles. We feel the need to have that simplicity in our lives again. Some of us will kick and scream our way through this trend in defiance until the next one comes along.

Gone is the need to build the most outrageous custom with the most expensive price tag. These old school customs (or bobbers as some call them) are a fraction of the price the new school choppers and customs were, resulting in recession friendly motorcycles. History repeats itself yet again. It just goes to show what goes around eventually does come back around.

Polaris Creates On-Road Vehicle Division–Polaris Industries Inc. has created an On-Road Vehicle Division to help establish what the OEM describes as “a significant on-road presence.”

Polaris leadership says the new division takes existing skills and assets within the company and aligns them in a way that maximizes the strategy for Victory Motorcycles and other on-road products and brands that may be introduced in the future.

Several management changes were made to set the foundation of the On-Road Vehicle Division.

First among these changes is Mark Blackwell’s new role as VP of Motorcycles. Blackwell has spent the past eight years leading day-to-day operations for Victory Motorcycles and played a key role in building the Victory brand.

Mike Jonikas, currently VP, Sales & Corporate Marketing, has been appointed to the newly created role of VP of the On-Road Vehicle Division. In this position, Jonikas will be responsible for the strategic direction for Victory Motorcycles and any on-road adjacencies the company may add in the future. He also will continue to lead the OEM’s Sales & Corporate Marketing teams. Jonikas has held several key roles with Polaris during the past nine years, including director of Product & Marketing Management for ATV and general manager of the Polaris side-by-side business.

Steve Menneto has been promoted to the position of GM of Victory Motorcycles. Menneto joined Polaris in 1997, serving in positions such as region sales manager, director of Dealer Development and director of North American Sales.

Lastly, Judy Kulsrud has been appointed to the position of director of North American Sales replacing Steve Menneto. Kulsrud has been with Polaris since 1995, serving in management positions in Retail Development, Sales Operations, Regional Sales Management, and most recently as director of Dealer Development.

“By combining the diverse strengths of Mark, Mike and Steve to further develop our long-term strategies in the On-Road Vehicle Division, we are positioning ourselves for continued growth both in the motorcycle industry and, in the bigger picture, across all segments of the on-road marketplace,” says Bennett Morgan, COO, Polaris Industries.

Polaris’ net sales for the year ended Dec. 31, 2008, totaled $1.95 billion, up nine percent from $1.78 billion in 2007. Sales for the company’s Victory Motorcycles division last year totaled $94 million, down from $113 million in the prior year.

Freedom Fight In Oklahoma

Top 50poster
The place to hang in Sturgis this year, sponsored by Bikernet.com.

Here's a recap of events which transpired during the first weekend of the annual spring Sparks America Bike Rally in Sparks, OK, which was plagued, for the first time in its history, by Police Roadblocks stopping and profiling Motorcyclists and trikers, specifically those attending the event, while allowing cars and trucks to proceed. While I was at work Friday night, I kept getting calls from Rev. Mike Bass (our Oklahoma Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) Rep) about Police Roadblocks being set up by the City of Meeker PD, Sac and Fox Nation Tribal Police, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, to target bikers attending Sparks America. I called the AIM attorneys office out in California, as well as Holly Hefton, our ABATE Legal Advisor here in OKC. Joey Lester advised me to make sure we were handing out Anti-Discrimination forms to those who were being profiled. After hearing about what was going on, I knew I was going to have my work cut out for me that weekend. What's ironic here is, I look forward to events like Sparks precisely to forget about any “business” for awhile and just kick back. I guess Eternal Vigilance being the Price of Liberty includes staying vigilant during the whole Bike Run, too!

In the middle of things on Saturday, Tony Ward, the terrific guy who runs the show, wanted me to say a few words. Now, those who know Tony are aware that he's quite the MC and owns the stage! So, I dragged myself down there and said a few words about what ABATE and the OK Confederation Of Clubs do for Bikers' Rights and what our game plan was going to be for reacting to unacceptable situations like these roadblocks, which might be legal by definition, but certainly aren't right! Ultimately, Tony passed the hat around to raise money to support ABATE, and we ended up with a sizeable contribution–that completely floored me, as I certainly wasn't expecting to get involved in that kind of business over the weekend! Cops causing an ABATE Fundraiser–who'd have thunk it? Tony got together with Roach and myself, and we started mapping out strategy for how to react to this BS. Believe me,Tony was definitely ticked off, since he lost literally thousands of dollars in revenue from folks not attending his event after hearing of the roadblocks. Tony feels a number of riders who were victimized might have cell-phoned their friends, and would-be attendees decided to stay away. It seemed to me that the first weekend's crowd was kinda light, and I'm sure the roadblocks influenced decisions to head home.

I got off work at Tinker AFB on Monday afternoon early, after whining to my Boss about how I needed to be somewhere important. That was because Rev. Mike, our AIM Rep for Oklahoma, called me to say that a bunch of riders were leaving out of Sparks America for the Meeker City Hall to attend the scheduled City Council Meeting at 6:15PM. So, I headed from Tinker directly to the City Hall on Hwy. 62, and the street and parking lot around the building were full of bikes! I parked and went into the meeting room, which was packed with well over a hundred folks–it was standing room only! I was accompanied by Holly Hefton, an attorney and ABATE's Legal Advisor, who was able to attend after a busy day of meeting with clients. There were also a LOT of police present as well, from Meeker PD, SAC and Fox Tribal Police and Lincoln County Sheriff's Dept. A number of Oklahoma Confederation Of Clubs members were also present, including Confederation Co-Chair Grumpy and myself as Liaison. During the Public Hearing portion of the meeting, it was great to see so many of our Riding Community standing up to passionately defend their Rights, with Tony Ward leading the charge! I stood up to say a few words as well, specifically to make the point that Motorcyclists as a group represent the finest citizens America can produce, with a larger percentage involved in serving their Country, paying their taxes, and taking an active role in Government compared to other groups. Over thirty people made their feelings known during that portion of the meeting, unanimously Pro-Biker! A news crew from News Channel Four in Oklahoma City, including Cherokee Ballard, one of OKC's better-known reporters, also attended, and filmed part of the meeting after interviewing several of the riders present, including Tony Ward. On her way out, she let us know that an account of the event would be included in Monday's edition of the 10 O'clock News.

All in all, the motorcyclists and trikers who attended gave a good accounting of themselves, and we all have much to be proud of regarding our Oklahoma Riding Family's defense of Freedom this week. The Chairman of the City Council stated, after hearing everyone out, that a decision on the matter wouldn't be made that evening, because the issue was added on at the last-minute to the agenda. However, he assured us that our words didn't fall on deaf ears, and that the Council would definitely take our statements to heart. That said, I'll withhold my judgment until I see positive actions accomplished to support the City of Meeker's expressed genuine desire to fix this unacceptable situation.

Talking with members of Law Enforcement afterward, I heard them remark about how what they were doing was legal and that they were only doing “their job.” However, that sure doesn't make it right in my opinion–it's as unjust to profile an individual for riding a bike as it is for wearing a Badge! We SHOULD all be able to get along, since being Free Americans is what we're all about, so we have a common interest! Bikers aren't looking for special treatment–we're looking for EQUAL treatment under the Law. ABATE and the Oklahoma Confederation Of Clubs have long advocated the passage of Equal Access Legislation, which, in eliminating Anti-Biker Discrimination, would target these very types of profiling roadblocks, among other issues. If we're able to successfully get this type of law passed in our state, I'd look to the incidents at Sparks America this past weekend, and to yesterday's City Council Meeting, as the springboard which headed us down that path. I'll update folks of the results of the Council Meeting, which hopefully will include a positive decision on behalf of us Bikers and Sparks America

Yours in Freedom,
–Tiger Mike Revere
State Coordinator, ABATE of Oklahoma, Inc.
Liaison, Oklahoma Confederation Of Clubs

“Ohhhhh–the Biker and the Lawman should be Friends;Oh, the Biker and the Lawman should be Friends; Some Cops will profile a Bike; Biker Roadblocks some dislike–but that's no reason why we can't be Friends!”

HOUSE APPROVES HEALTH INSURANCE PROTECTIONS FOR MOTORCYCLISTS–

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 422 to 3 on March 31st to pass HR 1253, the ?Health Insurance Restrictions and Clarifications Act of 2009?; bipartisan legislation to strengthen health insurance coverage for injuries incurred while participating in legal recreational and transportation activities, such as motorcycling, riding ATVs, snowmobiling and horseback riding.

While the language falls short of closing the loophole that allows insurance companies to deny benefits to motorcycle accident victims, it does prevent them from concealing such coverage exclusions by requiring them to be ?explicit and clear? in fully disclosing benefit limitations and restrictions ?in a form that is easily understandable? to the enrollee in advance of the point of sale.

The bill now goes to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, and concerned riders are encouraged to contact their U.S. Senators in support of the legislation.

CPSC STAYS BAN ON SALE OF YOUTH MOTORCYCLES & ATVs

In denying a petition from the motorcycle industry to overturn a ban against the sale of youth-model motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) due to the lead content of some components such as brake parts and battery terminals, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted on April 17, 2009 to keep the ban in place but granted a two-year stay of enforcement to allow the continued sale of these vehicles while industry attempts to comply with the new federal lead-content rules.

Congress enacted the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 to protect children under 12 from the lead content of toys and other products intended for the youth market but, intended or not, the ban has crippled a huge segment of the motorcycle industry, costing an estimated $1 billion a year as more than 13,000 dealers across the country were stuck holding millions of dollars in inventory.

The two-member CPSC board voted unanimously, citing safety concerns as the reason for issuing the stay; “A bigger safety concern than lead exposure is that the elimination of youth ATV sales will likely increase the number of adult ATVs purchased to be used by younger children, therefore increasing risk of injury and death.”

The stay extends through May 1, 2011, at which time the products must be brought into compliance or the industry can demonstrate to the CPSC why it is technologically infeasible to comply.

In the meantime, legislation has been introduced in Congress (H.R. 1587) by Representative Denny Rehberg (R-MT) to exempt youth-sized motorcycles and ATVs from the CPSIA. Help end the youth bike ban permanently by calling your members of the U.S. House of Representatives today and ask their support for H.R. 1587.

NEW MOTORCYCLE SALES DECLINE IN Q1

Despite six straight years of new motorcycle sales eclipsing the 1 million mark, the sagging economy has impacted U.S. sales in the first quarter of 2009 resulting in a 30.5% decline compared to the same period last year.

According to the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC), which compiled the results based on sales figures from 12 of the leading brands, the best performing type of motorcycles were affordable, fuel-efficient dual-purpose models which only dropped by 24%. The off-highway market was hardest hit, falling by 39.7% due in part to the new federal lead-content law that banned the sale of youth models.

Scooters were more popular than ever last year, setting a record of 222,000 sold in 2008, but those too are down 36.7% for the first three months of 2009. The on-highway market declined by 27.3%.

“There are still many customers wanting new motorcycles, both veteran riders and those wanting to join in the fun and gain the benefits,” said MIC president Tim Buche. “But, in reaction to the economy, there have been some production cuts. And the lead ban turned many parents away from buying new dirt bikes for their kids. There’s a need for wholesale financing to help keep dealerships supplied with inventory, and a need for consumer credit to loosen up so that dealerships can get those new bikes out on the roads and on the trails. It’s very hard to get retail financing now, even if you have good credit.”

The early year sales decline follows a relatively flat year for motorcycles, with sales estimates for all motorcycles and scooters sold nationwide in 2008 at 1,087,000 units, down just 3.3% from the previous year. Sales still topped the one-million mark, and did so for the sixth consecutive year, beating the longest run of million-plus sales ever recorded by the MIC, during the five years from 1970 to 1974.

WEIRD NEWS: MAN FAKES KIDNAPPING TO FIND STOLEN MOTORCYCLE

After hours of searching for a toddler whose father claimed he was attacked by motorcycle thieves who abducted the child, police arrested the Florida man for fabricating the kidnapping to get police to launch an intensive search for his stolen motorcycle.

According to The Gainesville Sun newspaper, Alachua County deputies took the 37-year old man away in handcuffs for filing a false report after his story unraveled during the manhunt and police learned that the 1-year old was safe with his mother.

Officers believe the man was the victim of thieves who posed as interested buyers and then took his gold-and-black Yamaha, so he told his wife to take their son out of day care and he then called police to report that the child had been taken.

“His thinking was if they thought my child was missing, there would be a more intensive search than for the motorcycle,” a Sheriff’s Office spokesman told the paper. The bike and the thieves are still at large.

MANDATORY REFLECTIVE VESTS URGED FOR FILIPINO BIKERS

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is proposing mandatory training and the wearing of reflector vests for motorcycle riders in an effort to curb rising deaths and injuries.

According to MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando there is a need to “enhance the skills” of motorcycle drivers nationwide, and further suggested that the government adopt the practice in Bogota, Colombia where motorcycle drivers are mandated to use reflectorized vests to allow for greater visibility during nighttime and eliminate road mishaps.

There are now an estimated 2.5 million registered motorcycles in the Philippines, and motorcycle sales have been growing at an unprecedented rate, driven by high fuel costs and easy-on-the-pocket installment plans. Some 671,588 new motorcycles were registered in 2008, compared with only 46,183 new cars.

NCOM CONVENTION LIGHTS UP RENO

The bright lights of the ?Biggest Little City In The World? shined off the bright chrome and polish of hundreds of shiny motorcycles parked along the entranceway to John Ascuaga?s Nugget Casino and Resort, as near-record crowds of concerned bikers from around the country came together in unity and cooperation for the 24th Annual National Coalition of Motorcyclists Convention, held in Reno, NV May 7-10, 2009.

The NCOM Convention, which was hosted by the Northern Nevada Confederation of Clubs, presented an opportunity for motorcyclists of every background to find common ground and focus on issues of concern to all motorcyclists. Riders learn, teach and share with one another, and coordinate with likeminded individuals and groups to forge relationships and foster communications.

Nearly 1,400 motorcyclists attended the Convention, and conventioneers represented almost all major patch holding motorcycle clubs, as well as a wide array of motorcycling-oriented organizations and associations, including a majority of State Motorcyclists Rights Organizations across the country.

The NCOM Convention featured educational seminars covering such diverse topics as Biker Rights and Civil Liberties post-9/11 and the Federal Trademark Seizure threat where all club insignia are put at risk, combating Anti-Biker Discrimination, Christian Unity, Women in Motorcycling, and a host of other legislative, judicial, and lifestyle issues. NCOM also broke special ground this year with the first presentation of a seminar entitled, “The World Of Sport Bikes”, which focused on issues and concerns specific to the Sport Bike Community.

The Worldwide Confederation of Clubs meeting on Friday was packed with over 900 club members expressing solidarity and a renewed commitment to work together and defend Riding Freedom.

The Convention was dedicated to the memory of longtime participants in the fight for Motorcycling Liberty who have passed from our ranks in the past year; AIM Attorney Joe “Big Guy” Eggleston, Bob Illingworth, and Robert “Grub” Chafe.

The Saturday Night events were festive, featuring the Silver Spoke Awards Banquet where recognition was given to notables in various fields who have had a positive impact on motorcycling. The Entertainment Award was given to TV and movie actor Robert Patrick of “The Unit” and “Terminator” fame, who not only is an avid rider and ABATE of California member, but also is a Chapter President in the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club. Steve Johann of Hog Radio received the Media Award. Receiving the Silver Spoke Award for Government was Nevada Assemblyman Don Gustavson, a tireless defender of freedom of choice. The Commerce Award was presented to Clay Ridley, founder of the Ridley Motorcycle Company. Florida Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) Attorney Jerry Theophilopoulos was presented the Silver Spoke for Legal, while Special Recognition Awards were bestowed upon A.I.M. Chief of Staff Charles ?Roach Hoffman and ABATE of Wyoming?s ?Mileage? Mike Harrison.

Rounding out the evening?s recognitions, the Ron Roloff Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Pepper Massey, former executive director of NCOM and past director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum/Hall of Fame and Sturgis Rally.

Attendees came away from this year’s NCOM Convention with a great deal of enthusiasm and motivation to continue the fight for Motorcycling Freedom in back home in their own respective legislative, judicial, and social arenas.

Plan now to attend the 2010 Silver Anniversary NCOM Convention, next Mother?s Day weekend in Orlando, Florida!

More BAD SHERIFFS, Southeastern Ill. sheriff accused of drug dealing– SHAWNEETOWN, Ill. — Federal prosecutors contend the longtime sheriff of Gallatin County in southeastern Illinois sold marijuana, often while on duty.

Raymond Martin was arrested Monday and made an initial court appearance on three counts of marijuana distribution and two counts of carrying a firearm while trafficking drugs.

Martin has been sheriff since 1990.The complaint accuses the 46-year-old sheriff of distributing more than 1,100 grams of marijuana between April 27 and May 11.

A judge has appointed a federal public defender for Martin. She hasn’t returned a message left for her Tuesday seeking comment.

A woman who answered Martin’s home phone Tuesday said Martin had no comment.

Federal prosecutors have charged Raymond Martin, the longtime sheriff of Gallatin County in southeastern Illinois, with selling marijuana, often while on duty. Martin, 46, was arrested Monday on three counts of marijuana distribution and two counts of carrying a firearm while trafficking in drugs. The charges say he distributed more than 1,100 grams of marijuana from April 27 to May 11. Neither he nor his lawyer could be reached for comment.

Sheriff Raymond M. Martin has been the law for nearly 20 years in a struggling southern Illinois county. But federal prosecutors say he’s been breaking it lately by peddling pounds of pot, some seized by his own department, often in uniform and from his patrol vehicle.

At one time permits crossed borders, but I?m not sure that?s the case. I?ve been told that it?s easier to obtain a permit in small counties, so don?t try in LA or San Fran. There will be plenty of racing at Barber (just east of Birmingham) this weekend. A full Vintage schedule on Saturday, with the modern ?fast bikes? running Sunday, and the World Class museum open both days.

On another note?.there’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio in July. I?ve never been, but I hear it?s a huge event. A full three day schedule of Vintage racing is a tradition there, along with ALL the other stuff??Due to some unfortunate circumstances, The Vintage Roadracing Sanctioning body that has supported the AMA for this event in the past is out of the picture, and WERA is stepping up to the plate to run the AMA Vintage Grand Championship Roadraces at Mid-Ohio. Vintage classes will be eligible for AMA Championships and AMA # 1 plates.

BREAKFAST AT BANDIT’S CANTINA–While enjoying an Early morning breakfast in a northern Arizona caf?, four elderly ranchers were discussing everything from cattle, horses, and weather to how things used to be in the ‘good old days.’

Eventually the conversation moved on to their spouses. One gentleman turned to the fellow on his right and asked, “Roy, aren’t you and your bride celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary soon?”

“Yup, we sure are,” Roy replied.

“Well, are you gonna do anything special to celebrate?” another man asked.

The old gentleman pondered this for a moment, then replied, “For our 25th anniversary, I took Bea to Tucson. Maybe for our 50th, I’ll go down there and get her.”

GM gives the pink slip to 1,100 dealerships–General Motors notified 1,100 dealers that it will not renew their franchise contracts, as the automotive giant looks to restructure in the wake of the economic recession and slumping new car sales.

Unlike Chrysler, which cut 789 dealer locations effective nearly immediately, GM will follow a wind-down process, allowing the targeted dealerships to gradually reduce vehicle inventory, parts and staff through to October 2010, when most of their franchise contracts expire.

According to GM, the dealerships closing are underperforming and make up a very small sales volume.

Combined with about 470 Saturn, Hummer and Saab dealers GM is looking to divest itself of, the company plans to eliminate 2,369 ? or 40 percent ? of its 6,000 dealers by the end of 2010.

In a press statement, GM said, ?While additional cuts will be made, we believe the vast majority, over 90 percent, of the remaining dealers will be offered a chance to remain with GM. However, specific dealer issues, further attrition and additional possible dealer network actions are expected to bring the number of future GM dealers to around 3,600 by the end of 2010.?

?We have said from the beginning that our dealers are not a problem but an asset for General Motors,? said Mark LaNeve, GM vice president of Sales Service and Marketing. ?However it is imperative that a healthy, viable GM have a healthy, viable dealer body that can not only survive but prosper during cyclical downturns. It is obvious that almost all parts of GM, including the dealer body, must get smaller and more efficient.?

Also unlike Chrysler, which made the names of its closing dealership public as part of its court filings, GM is not releasing the names of any dealers targeted to close. As independently owned businesses, dealer owners will make their own decisions if and when they want to make this information public.

The dealerships being cut by GM and Chrysler employ about 187,000, the National Automobile Dealers Association estimates.

ON A POSITIVE NOTE, HOUSE APPROVES HEALTH INSURANCE PROTECTIONS FOR MOTORCYCLISTS–The U.S.

Poker Run Legality may clear up in Palmetto State–Despite the controversy in Myrtle Beach, it’s not all bad news coming out of South Carolina this month. The SC Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation Tuesday May 12th that would revise the state’s 207-year-old gambling laws, which ban “any game with cards or dice.” Never mind that the bills won’t pass this year because the legislative sesson is over tomorrow, but at least some legislators can see where banning all games with cards or dice is not in the best interest of the charities in the Palmetto State.

Currently, the state’s centuries-old gaming laws are enforced at the discretion of the local law enforcement agency and mostlly only when someone complains. That sets up law enforcement as tools of retribution and revenge; something Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell called “just flat wrong.”

“We don’t want our police officers busting down people’s doors, of family and friends who are playing Rummy or nickel poker or strip poker,” said Sen. Jake Knotts, R-West Columbia, who quickly added, amid laughter, that he doesn’t advocate the latter. “This is to separate the criminal gambler from a person who just wants to play card games with some friends.”

A separate proposal, approved 14-6, would ask voters whether the state constitution should be changed to allow nonprofit groups to hold a limited number of raffles yearly. Currently, the only legal raffle is the state lottery.

South Carolina’s Lions clubs have lost roughly $500,000 since last year, when state law enforcement officers – responding to a complaint – threatened a Tega Cay club that was raffling off a motorcycle, said state executive director Gregg Turner, among just two full-time Lions workers left after two layoffs.

He said he advised the state’s 160 clubs to cease all raffles out of fear members would get arrested. The drastic drop in revenue has caused a backlog of residents needing the hearing aids, eye surgeries, and vision and hearing screenings the money provides, Turner said.

Traditional motorcycle poker runs, which has historically raised tens of thousands of dollars for local and statewide charities have been severly curtailed as a result of an Attorney General’s ruling that the events were illegal under the current State statute.

TIP UP THE SOAPBOX–I have a problem with our regulatory society, and I’ve been grappling with a stellar way to get the freedom-oriented message across. I was just speaking with the lovely, shapely Sin Wu. While staring at her cleavage I told her America was always independent, and made up of hard working, self reliant and resourceful individuals, but no more.

Now if we trip in the street somebody gets sued. And nobody wants to work for anything. It’s all turned upside down. We don’t need gun laws we need education, training that leads to respect. I think about 1,500 are injured with guns annually. We don’t need laws, we need education. It’s like helmets, train folks to understand motorcycles and safety. We don’t need to force folks to wear helmets constantly. In fact if we want to save lives, make car drivers wear helmets. About 5,000 die a year in motorcycle crashes, 20 percent due to head injuries. Some accidents are caused by helmets. Many neck injuries are caused by helmets. But wait, 44,000 people die each year in car accidents, 90 percent head injuries. How much sense does that make?

Did you notice the Right to Repair bill? We should have the opportunity to repair and or modify anything we want. But we need access to education and training. We don’t need the EPA to attack everything. Besides, what does that say to the rest of the world? Why would they want to take on our burdensome system with our myriad of regulations? What’s free or even democratic about that? We need a new tack for this sailboat. We’re headed in the wrong direction. How can we get this word across?

Have a helluva weekend.

Ride Forever,

Roeder’s Harley-Davidson ClosesThe Ohio dealership calls it a day–Today’s edition of the Sandusky Register in Ohio features a story on Friday’s closure of Roeder Harley-Davidson, the dealership owned by Will and Julie Roeder and founded by the late George Roeder in 1972.

According to the report, National City banked filed a forecloser lawsuit against the dealership on April 29, alleging that the Roeders have defaulted on roughly $2.5 million. Harley-Davidson, meanwhile, followed that with a lawsuit of its own, saying the dealership owes the Motor Company $2 million.

In addition to its financial woes, the dealership serves as the main sponsor for Ohio Bike Week, which is scheduled to start on June 5. The Sandusky Register says that signs on the dealership window directed customers to Shifters Bar and Grill, which is located next to Roeder’s, to purchase passes for the event there.

Steve Ernst, who runs Ohio Bike Week as the president of Advantage Entertainment and Consulting, told the newspaper that the event would continue.”We’re certainly affected,” Ernst told the Register. “They are our lead sponsor. They are the ones who started all this.”

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDINGS WITH DR. WEIL–5 Ways to Lower Cholesterol Through Diet .For people battling high cholesterol, choosing meals wisely can be a challenge, but it is essential. Restaurants, parties, even an office potluck may present unhealthy temptations. But simple dietary modifications can help you eliminate those unhealthy choices, while still allowing you to enjoy your meals. Try these healthful ways to help lower your cholesterol:

Reduce saturated fat. The richest sources of saturated fat (fat that is usually solid at room temperature) in the diet are red meat and dairy foods. Substitute whole soy protein for animal protein, and use low- or non-fat dairy products.

Avoid trans-fat. Stay away from items that list “partially hydrogenated oil” on the label, especially snack foods. Try baked or air-popped versions instead.

Use fresh garlic regularly in your meals. Garlic has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels.

Drink green tea daily. The antioxidants in green tea help lower cholesterol and prevent the cholesterol in your blood from oxidizing.

Eat plenty of soluble fiber. It has a powerful cholesterol-lowering effect. The best sources are beans and lentils, apples, citrus fruits, oats, barley, peas, carrots and freshly ground flaxseed.

AMA BANNER

Dal Smilie Faces Extradition ChargesFormer AMA Board Member Dal Smilie in hot water–Former AMA Board Chairman Dal Smilie went before the court in Helena, Montana, Thursday to face extradition charges originating in Ohio that he stole $109,000 in travel related expenses from the AMA, according to a Helena Independent Record report that appeared today on www.missoulian.com.

Smilie, a former chief legal counsel for the state Department of Administration in Montana, is accused of grand theft by deception and receiving stolen property between January 2003 and December 2007 from AMA. Smilie was a member of the AMA’s board of directors for 25 years, including a term as chairman, before resigning in November of 2007. A few months later he retired from his job with the state of Montana.

The 60-year-old Smilie, an AMA Hall of Famer, was quoted on the website as saying he was surprised by his arrest because he thought he had reached a settlement with the AMA a year ago.

“The amount that we had in dispute about the travel claims were all more than refunded,” Smilie said. “Our indication was that it was a civil matter.”

“Two things took place,” AMA spokesman Pete terHorst told the website. “There was a civil action, which was resolved between Mr. Smilie and the AMA, that happened last summer. But we also turned over the results of the investigation by AMA to the county attorney.”

Smilie was released from custody after posting a $25,000 bond. Now it is likely that Smilie will travel to Ohio to enter a plea in court.

BIKERNET SPORTS CENTER–At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside and asked, ‘Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?’

The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

‘Do you understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a team?’

The little boy nodded yes.

‘So,’ the coach continued, ‘I’m sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn’t argue, curse, attack the umpire, or call him a pecker-head. Do you understand all that?’

The little boy nodded again.

He continued, ‘And when I take you out of the game so another boy gets a chance to play, it’s not good sportsmanship to call your coach ‘a dumb ass’ is it?’

Again, the little boy nodded.

‘Good,’ said the coach. ‘Now go over there and explain all that to your grandmother.

MORE RESTRICTIVE HELMET LEGISLATION–They call it grant money I call it bribes.I have some questions about how law enforcement can take your personal property (helmet)When the helmet is stolen from the motorcyclist by law enforcement and the motorcyclist is now helmetless in a mandatory helmet situation what happens then.Certainly the motorcyclist will not be able to ride away helmetless. Will Police be selling helmets out of the trunk of their cars? Will they be staying with the motorcyclist and or motorcycle until the operator produces a helmet of their liking?

Since there would not be any thing illegal with the motorcycle what do they plan to do with it?

I see this being a Big Can of Worms and I hope that anyone who does get stopped and has any of their rights violated to take legal action against those doing it.

— Rogue

The Omaha Police Department received grant funding to begin operations to enforce motorcycle helmet compliance in Omaha.

Operations will begin Wednesday, May 27, 2009 and run through Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at various dates and times throughout the entire city.

The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety has awarded $25,000 to fund extra officers on the streets to ensure motorcyclists are compliant with Nebraska state laws regarding motorcycle helmets.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration, NHTSA, estimates that helmets reduce the risk of a fatal head injury by 40% and the risk of a death in a motorcycle crash by 37%.

Nebraska state law specifies that protective helmets that meet the United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #218 are required for all operators and passengers of a motorcycle or moped.

The protective helmet must be secured properly with a chinstrap on the head of the operator and /or passenger while the motorcycle or moped is in motion. The helmet shall consist of lining, padding, and chinstrap and shall meet or exceed the U.S. D.O.T. 218 Standard.

This compliance initiative is designed at saving lives by gaining compliance with Nebraska’s motorcycle helmet laws.

Officers will be looking for operator’s who are in violation of this law by not wearing a helmet and /or not wearing a helmet satisfying or exceeding the U.S. D.O.T. standards.

Helmets found in violation of this standard are confiscated and the driver cited. http://www.wowt.com/news/headlines/45400402.html

THE BIKERNET WEDDING TEST– I was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to get married. There was only one little thing bothering me…It was her beautiful younger sister.

My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight miniskirts, and generally was bra-less. She would regularly bend down when she was near me, and I always got more than a nice view. It had to be deliberate, because she never did it when she was near anyone else.

One day her ‘little’ sister called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations. She was alone when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she had feelings and desires for me that she couldn’t overcome. She told me that she wanted me just once before I got married and committed my life to her sister.

Well, I was in total shock, and couldn’t say a word.

She said, ‘I’m going upstairs to my bedroom, and if you want one last wild fling, just come up and get me.’ I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. I stood there for a moment, then turned and made a beeline straight to the front door. I opened the door, and headed straight towards my car. Lo and behold, my entire future family was standing outside, all clapping!

With tears in his eyes, my father-in-law hugged me and said, ‘We are very happy that you have passed our little test. We couldn’t ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome to the family.’

And the moral of this story is: Always keep your condoms in your car!!!

We understand her desire to encourage helmet use, but couldn’t the Secretary of Transportation find a more suitable program to fund her personal helmet hunt?” said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations for the MRF.

The 2010 funds were a direct result of years of intense lobbying by state motorcyclists’ rights organizations (SMROs) and individual motorcyclists from across this country, and were intended for two very specific aspects of motorcycle safety ? motorcycle rider education and motorist awareness of motorcycles. These two aspects of motorcycle safety have been grossly under-funded at the state level for years, often solely at the direct expense of motorcyclists themselves through licensing and registration fees.

The 2010 funding program, in its second year, is a way for the motorcyclists of this country to get a little help from the feds to save lives. The fact is that helmet use has always been a major plank in the platform at the US Department of Transportation (DOT). So why now take away funds desperately needed for other areas of motorcycle safety? The training and awareness programs in statewide operation now are in jeopardy of reduced or zero funding every year. This federal program was designed to allow a trickle of cash to the states to at least keep current programs running. Should Peters get her way, that trickle becomes nothing but a drip. In addition, the current 2010 grant program is not funding failing programs. In order to qualify for the grant, each state has to demonstrate success in its programs by reducing fatalities.

Secretary Peters narrowly skates around an existing law that bans the federal government from lobbying states to enact statewide legislation. She does this by not asking that the money be used for helmet LAW advocacy, but by asking the money be used for helmet USE advocacy.

What’s actually happened and how concerned do we need to be? You may be asking yourself that very question about now. Here is the real world scenario: Mary Peters has sent two letters to Congress – one to Speaker Pelosi and the other to Senate President Cheney. The letters include draft legislation that would amend section 2010 to allow funds to be used for the promotion of helmet use. At this point there is no actual legislation – just an idea. If and when legislation results, the MRF will be issuing a call to action strongly opposing Peters’ proposal, and will work tirelessly to convince every Senator and Member of Congress not to support this raid on the 2010 funds. At this point, however, the funds appropriated for your state are safe.

WYOMING FOR BIKERS–Thanks largely to efforts by Russ Reddick, Wyoming State A.B.A.T.E.-Vice President, Wyoming HB51 sponsored by Representative George Bagby passed and was signed into law by Governor Dave Freudenthal on February 26th and becomes effective July 1st, 2009–From the Wyoming legislature’s website – http://legisweb..state.wy.us/2009/Summaries/HB0051.htm – this bill:

? Authorizes the issuance of special license plates for motorcycles that contain a symbol indicating that the operator has a handicap;

? Specifies the size of the plate and the symbol that shall be used on the motorcycle plate;

? Provides that a qualified applicant may be issued one set of special motor vehicle and one set of special motorcycle plates that contain a symbol indicating that the operator has a handicap.

For anyone that has had a handicap placard stolen or lost to Wyoming’s winds, having a permanently attached plate will be appreciated. And with more people riding these days, it’s good to know that for some, there is now an option..

RIGHT TO REPAIR BILL REINTRODUCED–Earlier this spring, in announcing the government’s blueprint for savingthe big three automakers, President Obama said, “The United Statesgovernment will stand behind your (car) warranty.” While it’s unlikelymany car owners would trust the federal government with an engineoverhaul, a bipartisan bill called the Right to Repair Act of 2009 hasjust been introduced in the House of Representatives that would, in fact, make it cheaper and easier for millions of consumers to have their carsrepaired. Although similar legislation has been introduced in previousCongresses but not voted on, it takes on additional urgency in these tougheconomic times, especially with the closing of many auto dealerships.

Currently some manufactures only make diagnostic tools and softwareavailable to their dealerships, severely limiting repair opportunities forconsumers. Enter HR 2057, introduced by Edolphus Towns (D-NY), whichwould require car manufacturers make the tools and diagnostic informationneeded to repair their vehicles available to independent repair shops onthe same basis that they make them available to their dealer-operatedshops. (The legislation expressly protects manufacturer trade secrets frompublic disclosure.)

Basic consumer choice in vehicle repairs means more fair marketcompetition, which helps keep repairs affordable. In addition to theeconomic and convenience issues connected with this legislation, it iswell known that vehicles that are well maintained operate cleaner and morefuel efficiently. Enactment of the Right to Repair Act of 2009 would be awin both for small businesses and consumers at a time when both need aboost.

Although HR 2057 does have a greater likelihood of passage thisCongress than similar bills have in the past, it still has a long way togo before being signed into law. The MRF asks that you contact your USRepresentative to ask that he/she co-sponsor this important piece oflegislation.

smogtotals

CALIFORNIA MOTORCYCLE DEALERS ASSOCIATION AMMO FOR VOTING AGAINST SB 435: ? Motorcycles constitute less than 3% of the total number of motor vehicles in California and travel less than 25%, on average, compared to cars and trucks.

? Motorcycles, because of their low mileage usage and much higher gas mileage than cars and trucks, represent only 1.5% of the total for all mobile source emissions. ACTUALLY LESS THAT ONE PERCENT OF ALL EMMISSIONS.

? Motorcycles do not contribute enough pollution to warrant being included in a smog check program.

? Only 5.2 tons of smog are estimated to be saved by smog testing motorcycles (THIS NUMBER IS ACTUALLY WAY OVER BLOWN SINCE THE STATE FIGURES THAT ALL REGISTERED MOTORCYCLES ARE RIDDEN DAILY, WHICH IS UNTRUE). Compare that to 1,406 tons per day from all mobile sources.

? California motorcycle engine emission standards were lowered drastically in 2008 making California motorcycles already the cleanest in the nation.

? There is no real evidence that motorcycles that have been modified for performance or gas economy reasons emit any more emissions than stock ones.

? The cost to implement and conduct a motorcycle smog check program will cost California more than the value of the emissions it?s estimated to save.

?A smog check program for motorcycles will discourage new motorcycle purchases and encourage owners, who use their motorcycles infrequently, to stop using them.

? Motorcycle smog checks were eliminated in one Arizona county after it was proven that the program did not reduce emissions enough to continue the program.

? If motorcycles have to be returned to stock condition, finding original parts for older bikes will be impossible because historically, not enough spare parts were made when they were built.

FRENCHAMDSHOW

France sees launch of double-prize World Championship Affiliate EventIn the past few years, the French market has emerged as a major ‘player’ on the European custom scene despite the difficulties that the market there faces with some of the most difficult regulations in Europe–Builders such as Nicholas Chauvin, Claude Babot and Bertrand Dubet have been respected for years, but success at the Official European Championship and elsewhere for the likes of Xavier Chante (Riverside Motocyclettes), Cyril Gautier (Art of Racer), Jean-Claude Passetemps (School Bar Atelier), Laurent Dutruel (Zen Motorcycles) and Fred Duban (Dub Performance) has firmly placed French customizing at the ‘top table’ in innovation and creativity terms in recent years.

Indeed, 2007 saw two French builders in the top three at the Europeans, with five in the top twenty, and top ten placings at both the last World Championships.

AMD is therefore pleased to recognize the efforts of Wild Magazine in France to forge a relationship with the picturesque town of La Clusaz, in the popular motorcycle touring area of the French Alps, close to the Swiss border, in getting a new Rally underway this year which will be a World Championship Affiliate event for the French market and will take place June 19th to 21st.

The event will promote domestic French customizing and attract leading ‘international’ competitors from elsewhere in Europe by offering the International Affiliate program of two Sturgis expenses contribution prizes, one for the leading French builder, and one for the leading ‘international’ entrant.

love this dr.

NEW DOCTOR ELECTED TO BE BIKERNET SURGEON GENERAL–Q: Doctor, I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it… don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain…Good!

Q: Aren’t fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU’RE NOT LISTENING!!! ….. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they’re permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans ! Another vegetable!!! It’s the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! ‘Round’ is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets. And remember: ‘Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways – Chardonnay in one hand – chocolate in the other – body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ‘WOO HOO, What a Ride’

SEMA banner

THOUGHTS ON SEMA EFFORT TO SUPPORT MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS– I have read this over a couple of times and want to share a few of my initial thoughts. I am going to try and follow your letter as it pertains to the order of my thoughts with that said I shall begin with the SEMA show. I begin With SEMA show for 2 reasons, First it was the First major topic mentioned and secondly I feel that The opening of SEMA show to Motorcycles and Powersports can be related best to an initiation ceremony or a test of worth so to speak. If the SEMA show has a weak turn out for motorcycles why would the SEMA people believe that we are serious about the issues we say we are!

I additionally feel this to be a significant chance for our industry to reach people who may have otherwise not given the Motorcycle aftermarket any serious thought. SEMA show is considered by many to be the Biggest single aftermarket event in the U.S. and adding motorcycles can only benefit the Motorcylce community as long as the community participates. I feel that consistent and regular participation can be a huge benefit to any involved and can be a major factor in long term success.

Now I will briefly share my thoughts about the forming of a committee and being active members. I do believe that forming a committee is very vital in the progression of this effort and I again feel that active involvement from one or all of us can be very valuable to us in the motorcycle community as a whole.

I will also say that though I am very much for active participation and involvement I would personally rank my desire at a 6-7 on the 10 scale. My reasons are simple first I feel that there are far more people currently that may be better prepared to be a #10 regional leader than myself personally and for another reason as a regional leader or someone else at a 10 level of involvement would potentially require more travel than I can honestly budget for at this time, but I do desire to become more active and progress my involvement in the aftermarket and rights segments of our community.

As for the mission statement I agree with the points that are being put out there and feel that this is a great draft and will be looking this portion over further to see if I may have any ideas or tweaks to suggest.

My third and nearly final thought is that of the membership of the segment of SEMA. I initially feel that keeping an American V-twin membership would be very cool I also feel that we would be doing a great disservice to not only ourselves but the motorcycle industry as a whole by singling out only a small portion. I feel that if the Motorcycle industry as a whole is involved we could better direct our efforts to the issues that are important to us. The issues that affect the American motorcycle aftermarket also affects the metric market as well.

It is my Belief that this effort has great potential and will be a great benefit to all those involved in motorcycling whether it be the weekend rider or the thousands of shops and builders nationwide.

Syracuse Product Liability Trial Underway Against Big Bear American Made Choppers–Syracuse, N.Y., May 11, 2009 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX)– A product liability trial arising out of an alleged custom motorcycle defect begins today in the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York. The plaintiff?s claims against the defendant, a California-based company with a worldwide distribution network, include defective design, defective manufacturing, inadequate warnings, breach of warranty and negligence. The Honorable David E. Peebles, United States Magistrate Court Judge, will preside over the trial, which is expected to last two weeks.

The plaintiff in the lawsuit captioned Marcus J. (Marc) Mathews v. Big Bear American Made Choppers, Inc. (Case No.: 5:04-cv-1206), is a forty year old resident of Solvay, New York. He is represented by Anthony S. Bottar and Michael A. Bottar, of the Syracuse, New York law firm of Bottar Leone, PLLC.

According to the complaint, on June 13, 2004, the plaintiff was riding his three month old Venom ProStreet motorcycle in Alton, Ne Hampshire when the front fender assembly failed causing the nearly 10 pound fender to come into contact with and lock the front tire of the motorcycle. The plaintiff then lost control of the motorcycle, crashed into another motorcycle, and was thrown into a ravine where he sustained severe arm and leg injuries. After more than two years of surgeries, the plaintiff?s right leg was amputated above the knee.

According to court records, the Alton Police Department, with assistance from New Hampshire State Troopers, conducted an investigation after the accident which revealed that two of the four 1/4″-20 screws intended to hold the motorcycle?s front fender to the bike had fallen out prior to the accident. Eye witness accounts, a tire imprint on the underside of the front fender, and a distinct skid signature left on the roadway led the police to conclude that a defect in the motorcycle caused the accident.

After three years of discovery, the plaintiff?s attorneys claim that Big Bear American Made Choppers had actual or constructive notice, more than one year prior to the plaintiff?s accident, that the method it selected to attach the Venom?s front fender to its lower legs was inadequate.

Bottar Leone, PLLC, is a trial law firm based in Syracuse, New York. Since 1983, the Firm?s legal team has limited its practice to representing the victims of negligence and malpractice throughout the State of New York.

bulldog bash

PRESS STATEMENT : ?Bulldog disappointed that police ask for license review?– We are very disappointed that Warwickshire police should seek a review of the show?s license at this late stage. They have had nine months in which to seek a review -we can only guess at the reasons for waiting until now; but it would seem to be designed to cause disruption to the show.

Their bid doesn?t appear to contain any new arguments that would justify stopping the Bulldog Bash, though there may be some technical issues that could be resolved without a review. We would point out that there was a full two-day hearing of the license application last year which went through every aspect of the show in great detail ?this resulted in Stratford council granting us a ten year license for the event.

This decision obviously disappointed the police who then mounted a hugely disruptive, expensive and we believe unnecessary operation outside the show. The event went off with no problems as it has every year, yet the police are again trying to get the show cancelled.

Asst Chief Constable Bill Holland has already made it clear he doesn?t want the show to go ahead and has talked of repeating that disruptive police operation again if it does – something we know local people are unhappy about.

It seems inappropriate to us and we would again appeal to the police to work with us as they have in the past to make sure we have a safe and successful Bulldog Bash. We are confident the event will go ahead ?any issues the police have can be resolved between the organizers, themselves and Stratford council.

Tickets are available from The Bulldog Bash, PO Box 5026, East Reading, RG6 1QZ ? Please send a cheque or postal order for ?50 per person, plus a first class postage paid SEA, to arrive no later than 30th of June. After this date the gate price of ?55 applies.

Hey,

We’re running through another summer as if life is played out on the Bonneville Salt Flats at 200 mph. Before you know it, I’ll pack my Bandit’s Bedroll and cut a dusty trail for Sturgis and Bonneville and the summer will be toast.

I suggest we slow down, right now. Stop every goddamn thing and relax. Turn the cell phones off and party this weekend. I’m going to weld and drink whiskey all weekend. I bought some Captain Morgan’s Rum, but fuck it. I want Jack Daniels or Bulliet Whiskey.

Let’s ride, chase women and party for the next three days. Make it a Memorial Day to remember. Let’s hit the news:

It seems the old Iron Head Sporsters are making a BIG comeback among home builders. There were some great Iron Head Sportys there.

All in all it was a GREAT event. Nothing like hearing those open belt drives singing their tune and seeing Ape Hangers and Z-Bars everywhere! Edge always does a GREAT job with this event!

LETTER TO SUCKER PUNCH SALLY STAFF– I recently received an order of some shirts and was surprised to find a few extra nice items in with my package.

Amy took the time to put a little note on the back of a few stickers that were sent. It is rare that this kind of service is found these days. She wanted to thank me for my patience in waiting for my order. Being on my third combat tour with the Army, I have become accustomed to waiting a little extra time for mail. So this was certainly a very nice surprise.

I wanted to thank both her and the entire staff for the extra effort that was taken for something that is usually trivial for some companies. It certainly won over this very satisfied customer.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB ‘Recruitment’ laws passed in NSW — New laws which can imprison anyone caught recruiting members to a motorcycle club or declared organization, have been passed by the NSW Parliament, in the government’s latest moves against ‘outlaw’ groups. Under the laws, passed by parliament on Wednesday night, those caught recruiting members to a organization once it has been declared a criminal organization, could face up to five years jail.

The measure is part of a second raft of laws drafted after the media and politicians engaged in a frenzy of anti-biker hysteria, sparked by a spike in club/gang related violence.

Legislation was introduced last month allowing police to apply to the Supreme Court to have organizations (clubs/groups, etc) become declared criminal organizations. However, police have not yet made any such application. “The second round of legislation would make it difficult for bikie gangs to recruit new members”, NSW Attorney-General John Hatzistergos said, “Criminal organizations use feeder groups, which are usually made up of younger members, to replenish and renew their ranks,” Mr Hatzistergos said in a statement. “This new offence will make it more difficult for declared criminal organizations to recruit new members. “These new laws build on the legislation we have already passed and go further toward our aim of dismantling bikie gangs.” The laws passed by parliament on Wednesday will also allow police to make a public notice when placing a control order on an individual of a declared organization/group. This will be used when other means of serving the order have been unsuccessful, Mr Hatzistergos said.

CALIFORNIA MOTORCYCLE SMOG LETTER, A concerned voter’s letter to the Chairman of the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee–

Dear Mr. Chairman,

You sure have a tough job Sir. We bikers do appreciate all you do for us. Thank you.

That said, please note the ridiculous bill being proposed by state senator, Fran Pavley (D-Santa Monica) – SB 435.

She is on a wrong tract regarding emissions from motorcycles. Let’s look at the facts sir:

1. Motorcycles represent only 1.5% of the total mobile source emissions in California.

2. Motorcycles constitute less than 3% of the total motor vehicles in California.

Motorcycles are not the emission creators the senator from Santa Monica believes they are.

And then there’s the costs of it all. Wow. Do we need any more abuse of tax-payer moneys?

A smog check program for motorcycles in California, the only one in the country by the way that I am aware of, would be very expensive to administer and a colossal waste of taxpayer’s money.

Do we need another expensive government program? I think not.

The cost to implement and conduct a motorcycle smog check program will cost California more than the value of the emissions its estimated to save.

Thank you Mr. Chairman for your vote of “No”. We will not forget this good gesture.

LEGENDARY 1957 FERRARI 250 TESTA ROSSA SMASHES AUCTION WORLD RECORD AT MARANELLO SALE —An iconic, pontoon-fender 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa (TR) sells for ?9,020,000 in Maranello, Italy to set a new auction world record as the most expensive motor car ever to be sold at auction.

MARANELLO, Italy (May 17, 2009) ? RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby?s, made history at the Ferrari factory in Maranello today as a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR, chassis no. 0714TR sold for ?9,020,000 at the third annual Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event to set a new world record for the most expensive motor car ever to be sold at auction.

Returning to its Maranello birthplace for its auction debut, the ?9,020,000 sale price for 0714TR represents ?1,980,000 more than the previous auction world record which was set at the same sale last year.

?The historical significance of this car attracted a bidding war as collectors from around the world – both in the room and on the telephone ? competed to secure one of the most alluring and iconic of all Ferrari racing cars,? said Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Europe.

?The eyes of the world were watching today?s sale as cars of this quality are so rarely offered to the market. The quality and the provenance of the Testa Rossa speaks for itself and the price we achieved today is testament to that. We are delighted with the result the car achieved today,? he added.

The beautiful and immediately recognizable Scaglietti-designed ?pontoon-fender? 250 TR was produced from 1957 to 1958 during which only 22 examples were constructed. The Ferrari 250 TRs entered 19 international championship races from 1958 through 1961 emerging with 10 victories and earning them legendary status among discerning collectors, as well as the honor of being one of the most desirable and competitive racing Ferraris ever built. 0714TR was extensively campaigned in its day with significant finishes at the world?s most important racing events including the 1000 km Buenos Aires in January 1958.

Presented by RM Auctions in association with Sotheby’s, the Ferrari Leggenda e Passione is the only auction of its kind dedicated to the Ferrari marque, held at the Maranello factory grounds and endorsed by the Ferrari factory.

HOW TO SUPPORT THE MOTORCYCLE COMMUNITY, HELP OTHERS– Lately there has been press about motorists (4 & 2 wheels) being involved in accidents?several where a minor slap on the wrist has been all that has taken place. The most prominent story that comes to mind is the woman who was polishing her nails while driving her auto. This person rear-ended a motorcyclist who was STOPPED at a red light and killed her. Many of these type of accidents (including this one) result in minor tickets and fines. We as motorcyclists are and should be outraged. Let this serve as a call to work harder to change the penalties for such accidents.

To further complicate matters, accident reporting when a motorcycle is involved seems to be almost an afterthought and is many times incomplete or simply inadequate. I?ve been hearing horror stories of incomplete investigations and failure to fully collect information about accidents that result in permanent injury and scarring. Are we as a group joined by a common interest going to stand by and not raise a voice about this or attempt to improve this sad commentary?

Let me share with you just this one story. My friend who is a disabled cancer survivor with only one lung, had been hospitalized in the ICU in December, adding to this, his son passed away tragically in January shortly after my friend?s release from the hospital. He was hospitalized again after returning from making arrangements for his son for another respiratory related illness. His health deteriorated another notch as he came away from this now needing oxygen at times. This old school biker has struggled with knowing that a way of life for him is slowly being stolen by failing health. Realizing this, some of his dearest friends trailered his Electra Glide to Cherokee, NC. They wanted him to be able to enjoy another rally and some pleasant riding, especially as the heat that sometimes chokes his lung would be less of a factor and allow him to live the biking experience at least a little longer.

While out enjoying a pleasant afternoon ride in NC on US 19 in the Cherokee reservation–a pick-up truck pulled out of a driveway turning left into the motorcyclist. To quote the accident report ?Vehicle 1 [truck] failed to see before starting colliding into vehicle 2 [mc].? There was auto and motorcycle traffic all around at the time of the accident as one would expect with the Cherokee Survivor?s Rally and Thunder in the Smokies both going on.

The first person to reach my injured friend was a vacationing Fire Department Captain and trained EMT who was vacationing in Maggie Valley attending Thunder in the Smokies. How often is one fortunate enough to have trained medical help on their own motorcycle arrive at an accident scene so quickly! The Captain did not see the accident occur as he had just watched my friend go around the curve and came upon him immediately in the ditch where he had landed.

Despite being badly injured (his arm was crushed) this crusty old biker had the presence of mind to realize his injuries were not of a terminal nature. Through the pain he asked the off duty EMT to obtain information from witnesses. You see, my friend has worked many long hours over the years championing for rights of motorcyclists. He knows the inequities in the traffic courts and the laws when auto vs. motorcycle. He knew this would be important and would be difficult to obtain later.

After attending to my friends injuries and seeing that the arriving EMS had him ?packed up? and getting hospital info, the good Captain asked one of the two officers at the scene for a pen and paper to gather the witness information. The good Samaritan was told by the officer that he didn?t have time for this. The Captain had spoken to a man and woman who witnessed the accident, but did not have pen nor paper with him to take information. The couple was waiting in a nearby driveway for the EMS and police when the Captain left to contact the downed rider?s family. I?m told there were 15 ? 20 vehicles in the immediate vicinity of the accident (both autos and motorcycles).

The formal accident report contains absolutely no information on witnesses or notations that there even were witnesses. It becomes apparent that either: the officer(s) did not completely investigate the accident, the witnesses were asked to leave and clear the area, or that the witnesses decided this was not worth their time and left. If you were one of these witnesses you are sorely needed. Please come forward so this investigation can be completed!

This would be one time the persona of the biking group that crowds around the accident to look after their fallen brother would be a wonderful ?profile? to have! My appeal to you would be to become involved. So ? what can you do? There are specifically 2 things as a motorcycling community you can do? Voice your concerns to your elected officials, almost all of them have e-mail these days. Push for harsher penalties for these accidents caused by distraction or inattentiveness, not just for motorcycles, but bicycles & pedestrians. Distracted driving is unacceptable!!!!!

If you witness such an accident, take the time to be a witness. You may be the only factor that will help determine the true facts of the case. Be sure the victim(s) know how to contact you.

I would like to appeal to those of you who went to the Cherokee Rally or the Rally in the Valley or who live in the area to reach back into your recent memory, especially that couple that did initially wait. Did you witness an accident that took place on Friday, April 24, 2009 in Jackson County on US 19 (between Blue Wing & Washington Creek). At about 4:20 pm a Silver Chevy pick up truck and White Harley Davidson Electra Glide collided. If you were a witness or have heard someone talk about this accident, please have them come forward and help! The attorney for this case is Richard Donat (704) 602-3040. You may reference the motorcycle accident in Cherokee.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

S&S extends T?V approved Euro III lineS&S Cycle has announced approval of its carbureted V-Series engine to EURO III noise and exhaust emission standards as a part of its on-going program “to offer more Proven Performance products that meet today’s increasing emissions standards”–The addition to its current list of emissions certified engines is the S&S V113, a carbureted 113 cubic inch V-Series engine “that has been approved by the T?V to meet the current EURO III noise and exhaust emission standards. Approval of the V113 offers European custom bike builders the opportunity to build custom motorcycles containing a sought after V-Twin power plant while still being able to register their creations.”

SSENGINETUV

Director of Business Development Michael Scaletta commented that “we are very pleased about achieving EURO III certification for our engines. Not only does it demonstrate the sophistication of our technology, but also highlights our commitment to protecting the environment by producing emissions-compliant, high performance products – something we have been doing since the first S&S 50-state legal engines appeared in our catalog in 1998.” S&S say the V113 will be offered in natural, wrinkle black powder coat and polished finishes, and that each engine will include an S&S IST ignition system, Super G carburetor, Teardrop air cleaner and the necessary T?V documentation for the engine.

In order to retain compliancy, the V113 is furnished complete and assembled by S&S engine builders before being shipped. Installation of these engines will require an exhaust system containing catalysts and secondary air injection. A notice is included with the engine with the details of where these components can be sourced.

In addition to the V113, S&S say it is currently working towards receiving approval on the carbureted V96 and V124 engines to meet EURO III noise and exhaust emissions standards. S&S is hoping to have these engines available by the end of this year.

West Virginia, A Motorcycle Destination.New Tourism Web Site Dedicated To Motorcycle Riders–West Virginia Department of Tourism officials have launched their state into the forefront of motorcycle friendly destinations with the addition of a new tourism web site dedicated to travelers on two wheels. The Division formed the Motorcycle Advisory Committee to present the riding public with information about all that West Virginia has to offer riders. The site, located at http://www.wvmountainrider.com/ is a full service trip planner complete with travel guides, special routes divided up into each region of the state, camping locations, a list of state rallys and events and a rider?s journal for visitors to share their top rides with each other. Governor Joe Manchin III, a long time enthusiast, supports the new initiative and believes West Virginia to be some of the best riding in the entire country.

Oct. 19, 2005 – Gov. Joe Manchin participates in the official unveiling of the West Virginia Motorcycle, which was designed and built by Robert “Bear” Parsons, with Temple Street Choppers. The motorcycle highlights the capitol dome, state parks and various other items that truly illustrate the majestic beauty of the Mountain State.

The Motorcycle Advisory Committee including with the promoters of West Virginia Mountain- Fest in Morgantown, have posted an open invitation to members of the American Motorcycle press. This invitation will only be available to the first twelve members of nationally accredited publications and will be an all inclusive trip to explorer the beauty that is riding in West Virginia. The group believes that if the American Press Corps sees what their state has to offer riders, there will be no question that West Virginia is one of the country?s top motorcycle destination.

The special tour will start with the arrival of media members in Charleston WV on Wednesday July 22nd, where they will be provided with a reception dinner and a nights? accommodation at the Charleston Marriott hotel. Thursday morning each member will be assigned a new Harley- Davidson motorcycle and will be taken on a short ride to the Governor?s Mansion for breakfast with the Governor?s Chief of Staff Larry Puccio, also an enthusiast.

After breakfast the group will ride to the Hatfield McCoy Recreational Trails. There they will each be provided with their choice of a dirt bike or ATV and given a mini tour of the nation?s premier motorcycle and ATV trail system.

After they return from the trail ride, journalists will be lead on a ride to Songer Whitewater outfitters located in Fayetteville, near the New River Gorge, one of the state?s most significant land marks. Once at Songer, they will get premier cabin accommodations and dining that night. Friday morning there will be a guided two and a half hour whitewater rafting trip down the New River. At the end of the rafting trip, they will get back on the bikes and be guided to Snowshoe Ski Resort. This Swiss mountain village-style resort sits 5,000 feet atop Snowshoe Mountain. This is the region of the legendary Blackwater Falls 100 Cross Country Motorcycle Race and another location for incredible mountain twisties.

Saturday morning the group will get back on their bikes for a ride to Morgantown where the MountainFest Rally will be in full swing. VIP passes for the rally will be provide so journalists may explore all of Mountain Fest including one of the nation?s premier vintage bike displays, a vintage Grand Prix on Sunday, Custom Chopper Show on Saturday and a night?s stay at the Waterfront Place Hotel.
