The Art Of Kevin Ash

Drawing of an ex-con magazine editor from years past. Wonder where this criminal is hiding now?

Kevin Ash artwork has been circulating in the underground passageways of Bikernet for a while now. You may have noticed a piece here and there, usually placed strategically during the news, casual, precise, yet unfiltered. The images draw you in closer as you feel something from them. Pangs of the past, images sketched onto the gray matter, memories.

Jesse James collage capturing unique images from several photos and incorporating them into a vision.

His artwork transcends memories and experiences onto canvas, waking up the soul.

Bill Dodge flying through a blank landscape. I guess you can place the image wherever your imagination dares.

I asked the man himself how he started it all. Where did it begin?

While most kids are dreaming about taking off after school to find a girl, ride a bike, work on their car, Kevin Ash was sketching his dreams and fantasies into the margins of his homework where he grew up in Northhampton. Originally drawing surfer cartoons, he eventually moved onto pencil images of Frank Frazetta styled bikers and hot rods. He eventually moved to London, where he was employed as a pavement artist. Like most artists, he has continued to hone his craft, improving his skills and talents along the way.

I assumed he owned a bike, but was surprised to discover he does not. Strange considering his talent for capturing the biker’s soul in his artwork. Almost as if he’s captured the essence of it. He has a passion for everything two wheels…as long as it’s Harley based.

He claims his inspiration comes from the biker lifestyle. As he describes it, ” Freedom to live your life by your own rules.” The biker lifestyle coupled with rock and blues music. He claims he gets his musical kick from the work of Stanley Mouse and Rick Griffin.

“My artwork has been a lifetime passion – I can work in all mediums and paint / draw any image, with such a diverse client base ranging from tatooists to highly successful professionals. America is the market that appeals to me and it's where I would like to promote my work in the biker world.”

No bikes in this one, but still a beauty.

Each picture takes between 3 and 8 weeks depending on requirements. The attention to detail is second to none.

When I asked him about current projects, I was not surprised to find he was working several pieces. “I’m working on a commission that I received in California – its an oil painting. Also, an oil painting of a '49 pan head,” he shared with me.

For now it’s a part-time side gig, but he hopes to make this a full time profession.

Well Kevin, I know the readers here on Bikernet.com enjoy your work. So I raise my glass to ya, you’re doing one hell of a job!

Keep your eyes peeled for future works from Kevin Ash. Peruse through the pics and soak in the medium. Be sure to check his website at: www.lazylivingstudios.com. Check it out; he’s got an entertaining portfolio covering many different subjects, not just bikes. Be sure to let him know you saw his work and article at Bikernet.com.

There’s that evil bastard again! When I see this picture, I think of the biker riding through the desert in the movie Raising Arizona. Guys like this thug probably inspired the actor.

Hawaiianreport

Motorcycle-related deaths continue to climb in Hawaii–Fatalities already at 21, compared with last year’s record total of 32.

Despite calls for motorcyclists and drivers of four-wheeled vehicles to safely share the road, the number of motorcycle-related fatalities in Hawai’i continues to climb.

The death of rider Steve Donohue, 43, following a Friday night crash brought the state- wide total to 21 motorcycle-related deaths so far this year, compared with seven at the same point last year.

The number of motorcycle-related deaths on Hawai’i roadways has risen in five of the last six years. Last year’s total of 32 set a record for motorcycle fatalities in the state and ranked Hawai’i No. 3 in the nation in motorcycle-related fatalities per capita last year.

The previous high was 29 in 1994, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It’s a dubious record that could be smashed this year if the number of fatalities from the first six months of 2009 doubles by the end of the year.

FACTORS IN ACCIDENTS

When motorcycle accident figures followed motorcycle sales upward at the start of the decade, some attributed the increase to baby boomers learning or re-learning how to ride on large Harley-Davidson-style cruisers. Yet, there has been only one officially recorded motorcycle fatality in Hawai’i this year involving an operator older than 50.

Of the 18 fatal motorcycle accidents for which the DOT has cited related causes, eight were found to have been speed related, seven involved another vehicle turning left in front of the oncoming motorcycle and two involved alcohol use on the part of the motorcycle operator. The narrow front profile of a motorcycle can make it difficult for drivers to accurately determine distance and speed, a key factor in many accidents initiated when a car turns or changes lanes in front of a motorcycle.

Motorcycle safety instructor Bill Labby said that when he approaches an intersection on a motorcycle, he first slows to assess the situation, then accelerates once he’s sure it’s safe. If there is a car or truck across the way, he tries to make eye contact to ensure that the driver sees him. If there’s any chance that the car might cut in front of him, signal or no signal, he’ll stop or pull over.

“In that situation, if someone is going to cut you off, you can either hit the brakes or accelerate and get out of the way,” he said. “But you have to be in one of those two modes. Of course, you can’t anticipate every situation. If someone is stupid and they gun it in front of you, you crash and become part of the statistics.”

Two weeks ago, Thomas Reimer, 36, and his 7-year-old son Thomas Reimer Jr., were killed when their 2006 Suzuki motorcycle collided with a car that was attempting a left turn from Route 130 onto Ainaloa Boulevard on the Big Island. The driver of the car, Bobby Jiminez, 21, was arrested on two counts of negligent homicide and other charges.

Okay, here’s the deal our Hawaiian brothers. No more accidents for six months. Got that? We took a vote.–Renegade

KRAWIEC RACES SCREAMIN? EAGLE V-ROD TO FINALS IN CHICAGO–Krawiec Pads His NHRA Points Lead, Hines Moves Up to Second Place.

JOLIET, Ill. (June 7, 2009) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec added to his points lead in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle division by racing a Harley-Davidson V-Rod to the final round of eliminations at the United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Joliet, Ill. Krawiec, the defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, lost to Rocklin Motorsports Buell rider Matt Guidera in the final round.

Screamin? Eagle/Vance and Hines rider Andrew Hines, who lost to Krawiec in the semi-final round, moved into second place in the points standings. The Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team was making its first race appearance since the NHRA rules added 20 pounds to the team?s Screamin? Eagle V-Rod motorcycles, boosting minimum weight to 640 pounds, compared to 620 pounds for Buell and 595 for Suzuki motorcycles.

?We did not test at the new weight before this weekend, so our first goal was just to qualify,? said Krawiec. ?Our 60-foot times were actually pretty good, but after that you can feel the weight. I think with the extra 20-pounds added, these are mid-pack motorcycles right now. But we were consistent and caught a few breaks today and made the best of the situation.?

Hines qualified fifth for the event with a run of 6.989 seconds. Krawiec qualified ninth at 7.011. Horne Racing Buell rider Doug Horne was the quickest qualifier with a 6.936 pass.

Krawiec defeated Vroom Racing Buell rider David Hope in the first round, and beat Horne?s 7.168-second run with a 7.094 pass in round two. Hines beat Suzuki rider Joe DeSantis in round one, and got a win in round two when NitroFish Suzuki rider Matt Smith left the line early. Krawiec and Hines faced off in the semi-final round, with Krawiec pulling away for the win with a 7.143 pass to 7.193 for Hines. Guidera defeated Krawiec, 7.096 to 7.189, in the final round. It was Krawiec?s third consecutive visit to the final round. He was this winner at the past two events.

Hines felt the team worked hard to tally the points it did in Chicago.

?We tried a lot of different things today,? said Hines. ?I was really happy with a 7.08 in the first round, and then Matt Smith handed me a break in round two. But we are going to have to find some more power to overcome the added weight, and then work on the transmission to handle it. Together we made 15 runs this weekend, and that gives us some good data to use in working on a set-up for the next race.?

After five events on the 17-race 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule, Krawiec leads the series with 433 points. Hines moves into second place with 382 points, dropping Smith to third with 380 points. Horne is fourth with 349 points.

The next event on the 2009 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule is the United Association NHRA SuperNationals, June 11-14, at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.

The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Pro Stock Motorcycle team is sponsored by Matco Tools, Dunlop and S100.

BASSANI Harley Rocker PIPES 8HP Gain Write Up in Hot Bike MagPro Street Pipes Shown: The wait is over for Harley Davidson Rocker owners looking for exhaust systems. BASSANI Xhaust introduces ROAD RAGE? systems in brilliant chrome and ceramic black designed to fit Rockers and other Softails. Bassani Road Rage 2 into 1 systems are known for their exceptional low end torque and top end performance without the traditional ?lazy torque curve? that plaque most 2 into 1?s. The systems is offered in either short or long megaphone mufflers.

?We have gone all out to increase torque and give good top end power,? said Darryl Bassani Founder and President of Bassani Manufacturing. ?This system makes significant power increase and we kept an eye of good looks with full coverage heat shields and unbeatable style.?

These two BASSANI systems have a deep throaty sound. Besides looks and power, BASSANI knows how important sound is and has worked hard to deliver attractive sound that is not offensive.

Bassani believes in equal length primary tubes, even though they increase design time and are more difficult to fabricate. They also use stepped primary tubes when testing shows that they are advantageous to the performance. They have designed an exclusive wave isolation collector which includes a scavenging effect and further improves performance.

Bassani EquaLength headers come complete with Basssani’s patented gasket design, all installation hardware, and installation instructions. By installing Bassani headers you will notice increased power and better fuel economy without sacrificing reliability .

RIDING IN THE ZONE, NEW BOOK–There is little that can match the sublime sensation of riding down a peaceful backroad completely in tune with your motorcycle and the surroundings, or the exhilaration that comes from slicing skillfully through a series of challenging corners on a long descent. These moments are what good riding is all about and what every rider hopes to experience.

“Riding In The Zone,” a new book written by motojournalist and motorcycle instructor Ken Condon and just published by Whitehorse Press, explains the techniques that can help any rider — cruiser, sportbike, etc. — find that magical state of being “in the groove” or “in the zone.” A motorcyclist for more than three decades, Ken Condon is best known to the motorcycling world as the current author of the monthly Proficient Motorcycling and Street Strategies columns for Motorcycle Consumer News. He is also the chief instructor for Tony’s Track Days and is an experienced Motorcycle Foundation instructor.

Condon identifies the many factors that help you enter “the zone” with detailed diagrams and extensive full-color photographs and illustrations in 141 pages. Condon addresses each one individually, from the development of awareness and mental skills to complete physical control of your motorcycle. At the end of each chapter are drills designed to transform the book’s ideas and concepts into advanced riding skills that are natural and intuitive. A companion DVD is included with the book to demonstrate these concepts and techniques. It shows how to perform each practice drill so the lessons may be applied quickly and easily to actual street riding.

“Riding In The Zone” is published by Whitehorse Press and can be ordered at Whitehorsepress.com. It retails for $29.95.

SheetMetalFab

WOLFGANG BOOK OF THE WEEK, SHEET METAL FABRICATION BASICS–Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics gives the reader the knowledge needed to shape sheet metal without the need for expensive power tools. The reader needs only a simple shop equipped with the most basic of tools. If the first Ferraris were built using only wooden mallets and tree stumps, nearly any sheet metal project can be fabricated with only hammers, dollies and bags of shot.

Master craftsman Rob Roehl from the shop of Donnie Smith, explains the types of steel and aluminum that are best suited to motorcycle projects, how to plan and layout a project, and how to stretch and shrink sheet metal without a power hammer or a Pullmax.

The key is planning, and then shaping primarily by stretching. Eventually the various panels must be joined through careful welding. And though many professionals use TIG equipment, there?s no reason you can?t weld both steel and aluminum with gas welding.

Start to finish projects include the creation of an air cleaner cover, a seat pan, and a complete fender. The book covers a wide range of techniques, from hand stretching with a hammer and a bag of shot, to shrinking with a small hand operated shrinker/stretcher. Rob also covers the correct use of the hammer and dolly, and the way an English wheel can be used, both to shape metal and to smooth out the lumps and bumps left by typical hammer work.

You can learn to fabricate sheet metal. All you need is the raw material, the sincere desire to learn and a copy of this new Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics book from Wolfgang Publications. 144 pages long, 100% color, and over 350 photos.

California Proposes to Enhance Vehicle Scrappage Program– State to Target Pre-1976 Vehicles SEMA is opposing a California Air Resources Board (CARB) proposal to spend roughly $30 million annually for an Enhanced Fleet Modernization Program (EFMP) to augment the State’s existing vehicle scrappage program. The proposal would provide incentives statewide for vehicles not currently eligible under the Consumer Assistance Program by removing the existing requirements that vehicles be subject to and fail Smog Check to participate. CARB is specifically targeting for scrappage pre-1976 vehicles that are not currently required to undergo Smock Check inspections.

According to CARB, allowing vehicles that are not currently undergoing registration or that have passed their Smog Check to participate greatly expands the vehicle population that can be retired.

Participants would receive $1,000 per vehicle or $1,500 per vehicle if they meet low-income requirements. The proposal would also establish a pilot voucher program in the South Coast and San Joaquin Valley air basins that targets the highest-emitting vehicles and requires their replacement with newer, cleaner vehicles. The local air districts would work with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) to determine vehicle eligibility and low-income status. Once approved, the districts would provide the applicant a Letter of Eligibility from BAR and a redeemable voucher. Consumers would retire their vehicle at a participating dismantler, receiving an immediate compensation of $1,000 – $1,500 for vehicle retirement. Consumers could then redeem their voucher at participating car dealerships toward the purchase of a replacement vehicle. CARB is proposing that the voucher compensation be $2,000 or $2,500 per vehicle depending on income level.

CARB will conduct a public hearing to consider adoption of the proposed Enhanced Fleet Modernization Program Regulation (Car Scrap).

FROM SCORPION PRODUCTS, Getting A Grip With The Klaw– (Lake Forest, CA June 22, 2009) Proving you can?t have too much of a good thing, the engineers at Scorpion Sports have revamped the original Venom version of their race-spec glove to create the all-new Klaw. In keeping with Scorpion?s goal of providing ExoSkeletal protection, upgraded goatskin leather is combined with ?PowerStretch? panels across the knuckles and a protective plate over the back of the hand. The result is an expanded range of flexibility and a perfect fit, without sacrificing protection.

Working in conjunction with the protective plate is the patented ExoTec CE-approved armor. All seams on the Klaw gloves get the ExoStitch overlapping safety seams to make sure they don?t blow out in the event of an impact. The natural wear characteristics of the tough goatskin, combined with added protection of the ExoTec armor inserts, earns the Klaw a full ?4? on Scorpion?s unique Abradium abrasion scale. There is also a full 1 year warranty on these gloves as well.

However, all these up rated specs still don?t mean riders on a budget will have to resort to a five-fingered discount to get their hands on these top-of-the line gauntlets. MSRP remains under 50 bucks! Available in Black, Silver and White, the Klaw fits mitts ranging from XS all the way up to 2XL.

COULD WATER BILL INFLUENCE MOTORCYCLE ACTIVITY?–I have included info on this bill for you to act as you see fit. Once again it strives to give the feds too much control over a very valuable resource, WATER. My concern as it relates to motorcycles is what will they do in relation to an off-road park or trail system where you cross various streams and creeks. The way this bill reads it could be on your own property even. Will the EPA say that can’t drive your tractor across that stream because it may leak a drop of oil or fuel in it when you cross? Will you have to get a permit to fill in a ditch or clear a stream bed? (This has happened in the past) In fact the way this reads if you have a bird bath in your garden theoretically it would be subject to federal regulation. Committee Chair Barbara Boxer has been frustrated for the past month, and is strong-arming Democrats on the Committee to support a bill without a hearing. She has also established a ‘gang of four’ to come up with language that would assure Committee approval.

The four are Max Baucus (D-MT), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), George Voinovich (R-OH), and Lamar Alexander (R-TN). Baucus is the leading critic on the Democratic side, and is trying to ‘cut a deal’ by appeasing interests in his state.

Hopper wasn’t exaggerating. This bill expands federal power in two ways:

1) By removing the limiting term ‘navigable’ from the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act and replacing it with the all inclusive ‘waters of the U.S.’ (including wetlands, intermittent streams, playa lakes, prairie potholes, sandflats, mudflats, ponds, meadows and sloughs).

2) By adding the new language ‘activities affecting these waters,’ which refers to land use activity as well as atmospheric deposition.

The simple definition of a non-point source is ‘anything that doesn’t come out of a pipe.’ This would include agriculture, forestry, mining, energy development, home-building and other property improvement, as well as recreational uses of public lands and waters. It would include activities such as mowing your lawn, planting a garden, or building, maintaining, or using a recreational trail–virtually any human activity you can imagine. As Ali Cambel, professor of Environmental Studies at George Washington University warned over 30 years ago, “Wait until they get around to controlling non-point sources of water pollution.”

The bill is not about pollution, it’s about power. It is being supported by every national environmental organization in the country as a means of maintaining and expanding their power base in Washington

Jessecar

JESSE JAMES TROUBLES–Late afternoon on June 16, James flew across the windswept dust of El Mirage dry lake bed in the California desert and tripped the lights at 199.712 mph in a hydrogen powered car. That was 14 mph faster than the previous record of 185 mph, set in Germany by BMW in its hydrogen-powered H2H.

“This, I honestly believe, is world-changing,” James said of the emissions-free race car. “We can’t rely on gasoline forever. I’m paying it forward.”

The whole deal was for the season-ending episode of James’s TV show, Jesse James is a Dead Man. The episode is set to air at 10 p.m. Eastern on Aug. 9 on the Spike TV network.

“Not bad for a bunch of guys with no college degrees, huh?” said James of his West Coast Choppers crew.

And even when two members of the team sheepishly admitted that they indeed had college degrees.

UPDATE, 12:10 p.m. ET June 19: Roy Creel, president of the Southern California Timing Association, sent this note to correct a point in the original post:

The SCTA (Southern Calif. Timing Association) was neither involved in, nor did we confirm Mr James’ ?record.? In fact, Mr James did not set any record. What he did accomplish was to exceed an existing record speed previously set by BMW. His private timing event was timed by the same folks that time SCTA events and the course was set up by the same folks who set SCTA courses.

Someone ought to tell Mr. James that if he wants to be something more than a ?TV racer? then he needs to play the by the rules every one else has followed for more than 80 years.

In my opinion, this ?press release? is well-written mature manure that proves he is a self-promoting blowhard who hasn?t got the stones to play with the real racers.

Mike Cook did his job, kept ?amateur James? from killing himself, or anyone else, but understand the man got paid to do only that. As for the timers, the Rice brothers, they are top-notch guys who were also being paid to do a job. That an SCTA course was used only tells us the course was properly measured.

There was no mention of an independent sanctioning organization to oversee the activities. No one inspected this car, nor its propulsion system to certify anything about it or what it did.

James achieved nothing except personal satisfaction from a test day where he was paying all the bills and counts for absolutely nothing on the world motorsports stage.

TV’s Jesse James fraudulently claims besting BMW’s FIA ratified hydrogen-powered World Record Speed Record–Cable TV personality Jesse James claims he set the world record for hydrogen-powered vehicles on June 16th on the southern California El Mirage dry lake.

The claim is without merit since the activities were conducted without benefit of any motorsports sanctioning authority. The vehicle was neither inspected, nor certified and all the timing personnel were on the James TV payroll.

World speed records require two runs over a one-mile course within one hour. James was 5,148 feet short — being timed one-way for a total of 132 feet; he made only three or four passes over an eight to ten-hour period. Any world record holder will tell you it?s quite a technical feat to hold speed for a full mile.

The baseless speed stunt was reportedly for “the season-ending episode of James’s TV show, Jesse James is a Dead Man.” The episode is set to air in early August.

James claims to have bested the FIA ratified BMW HR2 record of 185 mph. The BMW HR2 race car set 9 international and FIA-ratified land-speed records for hydrogen cars at the Miramas Proving Grounds in France .. The BMW HR2 is one of the few hydrogen cars developed with internal combustion engine (ICE) technology instead of fuel cell technology.

Mr. James efforts count for absolutely nothing on the world motorsports stage and amount to little more than a self-promoting ?TV racer? PR stunt since he chose to ignore the sport’s sanctioning rules that have applied to all records certified for the past 80 years.

When contacted to explain the fraudulent claim, James responded with a short crude retort that reminded this writer that vulgarity is indeed the refuge of a destitute mind.

Speedy Regards,

NORTH CAROLINA:NC Man Beats Helmet Ticket…. writes Governor, Legislators– Dear Governor Purdue, Mr. Apodaca and Ms. Justus,

I received a helmet ticket on 24 Sept 2008, because the Hendersonville police officer said my helmet was not compliant with FMVSS 218 as required by the new law our legislators voted for and became new law on 1 Jan 2008. My helmet had a DOT sticker on back and was compliant, yet Lt Allen told officer Smith to write me a ticket and let the court decide.

I spent 9 months fighting this unjust ticket, and just when I was suppose to have my day in Superior court this past week to have a jury of 12 peers decide my case, the DA dismissed the charges stating “NOT IN THE INTEREST, OR EFFICIENCY, OF THE COURT SYSTEM TO PROSECUTE THIS CASE.” This law is unconstitutional, and cannot be enforced as written except with ad hoc and on an arbitrary subjective basis. I ask you all to please correct this law—-harassment of citizens on the streets and in the court rooms is an injustice, and a violation of our rights.

Motorcyclists all over our state are being harassed and ticketed everyday for legal helmets, yet police officers are using their subjective opinions on what they feel a helmet must look like in order to be compliant with FMVSS 218 and this is illegal in accordance with the Unites States Supreme Court and our constitution. Under United States Code, Title 49, Chapter 301, Section 30103 it says that once a state has adopted a federal standard, as N.C. did in adopting FMVSS 218, that federal standard has supremacy, and states may enforce no other standard other than the federal standard. There is nothing inside FMVSS 218 stating any fabrication requirements of any kind. DOT standard does not specify the type of material or design that manufacturers must use to comply with FMVSS 218; in fact Claudia Covell, Safety Compliance Engineer of the NHTSA, DOT writes that helmet manufacturers may use ANY material they wish, and any design they want. Now when motorcyclists get ticketed for a certain type of helmet design or for a helmet not being made out of a certain type material that is in violation of federal law.

Ms. Justus you signed the law–you agreed to it, you should know what the law says–but you don’t. Why did you sign a bill into law that is unconstitutional and violates our rights as citizens while traveling on the streets of N.C? It states in FMVSS 218 in section 5.6.1 (e) that the DOT sticker constitutes the manufacturers certification that the helmet conforms to the applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards. That’s it. That sticker makes a helmet compliant, and the DOT has no fabrication requirements at all, of any kind, on how manufacturers must make their helmets look, and the State of N.C. MUST accept that standard by federal law, but they are not doing that. They don’t want to accept the fact that helmets may look any way the manufacturer so desires and so they write us tickets because they feel a helmet, by their own subjective opinion, should look like this or that or have this or have that, etc., etc. This is illegal, yet they are getting away with it because most people don’t have time, like my 9 months I spent, fighting their unjust illegal tickets.

I ask you to please stop this injustice and repeal the helmet law until a law can be made that is understandable by both LEO’s and motorcyclists alike. Police right now are running amok writing tickets for whatever personal reasons they feel a helmet must look like to be compliant. So the standards that determine if your helmet is legal of not, change every time another police officer looks at you. We have a constitutional right to have the law clearly defined and have a reasonable opportunity to know what is prohibited. The United Supreme Court says Police officers must have explicit standards of the law in order to enforce it without doing so arbitrarily and with ad hoc…and this law does not meet those requirements.

This case has grabbed the attention of many people across the country and will be in several magazines coming out soon. All we want is to have this law corrected, we are not asking for much. The below is a partial comment from a writer here in N.C. concerning this ticket, the outcome and our helmet law. Thank You. I wait for your reply.

Sincerely, Ron McAnally Hendersonville area, North Carolina

Ron McAnally appealed a motorcycle helmet ticket case, on grounds that the statute is unconstitutional due to vagueness, to NC Superior Court and was awaiting a trial by jury. On June 11, 2009, after almost a year of inefficient court proceedings, his case was dismissed, with a note:

NOT IN THE INTEREST, OR EFFICIENCY, OF THE COURT SYSTEM TO PROSECUTE THIS CASE. The dismissal document is posted as both a .jpg and .pdf in several places. http://bikercourt.com/docs/dismissal_ron1.pdf

GET INVOLVED–I know Ron and have been in touch with him while he was fighting this ticket. He plans to get another one and keep doing so until his case is heard or the state repeals the mandatory helmet law.

He could use a little help by others getting tickets as well and taking them to court.Ron told me he would supply free of charge copies of the defense he used to anyone wanting to take their ticket to court.

You To Could Say You Stood Up For Your Rights and also that of the other riders of the state who just sit around and whine about bad laws.

I can tell you that this system does work as it worked for me and others years ago in Connecticut and tied up the court system plus cost the state so much money local judges ordered the police department to stop issuing tickets. That all led to Connecticut?s Mandatory Helmet Law being repealed.

Many people are watching to see what the organizations in North Carolina that say they are for motorcycle rights are going to do to help. They should have massive rides and get a bunch of tickets and everyone one go to court. If they do not then what people are saying about them being social clubs that make believe they are fighting for motorcycle rights would appear to be true.

Thank You Ron!

THE RAKED TREES CONTROVERSY HEATS UP– I bought a new ultima front end for my Harley Rocker ’09. It has a 3 degree rake and is only 2 inches over stock. I had it installed at a custom shop. They quoted me 4 hrs. When it was complete the guy ended up charging me 30 hours plus parts. It took nearly 3 weeks.

Now the bike handles terribly. You have been the only person I could find who describes my problems correctly. It appears I am getting to much trail now as I measured nearly 5 inches.

The bike now handles exactly like you described “the bike will handle sluggishly at high speeds. It will seem almost too steady. You will have trouble balancing your bike at lower speeds, or on winding roads. It will feel generally sluggish and clumsy”.

My question is are there any suggestions you can offer me to decrease the trail, such as maybe getting a 21 inch wheel (currently 19) or lower the back end. I’m really looking for a simple solution as this has turned out to be a nightmare and has cost me a lot of cash. I do not want to have to take that front end back off and have to start over.

Any help you could offer would be really appreciated.

–Steven

Actually, it should handle fine with only three degrees. Some V-Rod models come with raked trees. We put Steven onto Johnny’s Customs in McAllen, Texas, near his home town. Johnny Gil is an excellent builder. We’re about to feature one of his bikes. He has a full service shop (956) 687-4256.

We’ve recently received questions regarding raked triple trees. Some builders will never recommend raked triple trees. So builders use raked triple trees to improve handling on highly modified customs. Here’s a brief code. Raking frames adds trail and straight-line stability. Raked trees reduces trail and straight-line stability. So, if you’ve raked a frame and have too much straight-line stability, then raked trees will improve cornering ease without jeopardizing straight-line stability. Get the picture? If you add severely raked trees to a stock frame you’ll reduce your trail too much and hinder straight-line handling. Be careful and work with a reputable shop.–Wrench

HISTORIC 1952 JAGUAR C-TYPE SPORTS RACER, DRIVEN TO VICTORY BY PHIL HILL, JOINS STARTING LINE-UP FOR RM?s MONTEREY SALE– BLENHEIM, Ontario (June 10, 2009) ? A historic 1952 Jaguar C-Type Sports Racing Car that was driven to victory in 1952 by the legendary Phil Hill to claim the Jaguar C-Type?s first North American racing victory has joined the starting line-up for RM Auctions Sports & Classics of Monterey event, to be held August 13th ? 15th in Monterey, California.

The rare C-Type, designated XKC-007, was one of just 53 examples built and one of the first Jaguar C-Types delivered to the United States. Shipped to New York in 1952, this example was immediately driven to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, where it, along with XKC-009, made their competitive racing debuts as part of the company?s North American sales pitch for the model. It was at this meet that XKC-007 made Jaguar history when the eventual World Champion driver, Phil Hill ? then just 25 ? drove it to victory in The Sheldon Cup. Under the sponsorship of Charles Hornburg, the Western United States Jaguar distributor, and with Phil Hill back behind the wheel, XKC-007 went on to achieve further success at Torrey Pines that same year.

XKC-007 passed through the hands of numerous owners over the following years and was fully restored by noted Jaguar expert Terry Larson before making its way into the distinguished, private collection of Jerry and Kathy Nell in 1993 where it has remained ever since. Presented in period correct condition, it notably displays the signature of the great Phil Hill and retains its original, numbers matching engine.Throughout its racing career, XKC-007 was never crashed.

Auctioncolor

In addition to its rich race history, XKC-007 has enjoyed success on the show field, awarded a national championship in 1994 by the Jaguar Club of North America. In 2002 it was reunited with Phil Hill at Pebble Beach to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the C-Type, as well as at another commemorative event in 2006 in Elkhart Lake when the famed Wisconsin road track was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The rare 1952 Jaguar C-Type Sports Racing Car, chassis number XKC-007, will lead a magnificent line-up of investment-quality collector cars when RM Auctions highly anticipated Sports & Classics of Monterey auction event returns to the Portola Hotel and Spa, 2 Portola Plaza, Monterey, California, August 13th to 15th. NEW POCKET KNIFE LAWS COMING– The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency is proposing a new definition that could be used to eliminate 8 of 10 legal pocketknives in the United States right now, according to activists who are gearing up to fight the plan.

The federal bureaucracy is accepting comments ? written only ? that must be received by June 21 before its planned changes could become final, but Doug Ritter of KnifeRights.org, said the implications of the decision would be far-reaching, since many state and federal agencies depend on the agency’s definitions to determine what is legal in the United States.

For a long time, those switchblades that have long stiletto blades that are spring-ejected powerfully from the side or end of the handle have been illegal in the United States, but now a review by the agency of its own approval in 2008 of a particular type of knife for import is raising serious alarms.

Ritter said the effect of the proposed change would be that the new design in knives, many of which contain a tiny spring to help the user pull open the blade and lock it into position, would be classified alongside those true weapons where the user just presses a button and the blade is ejected.

“They are saying that any knife that you can open quickly or any knife that you can open with one hand is therefore a switchblade,” Ritter told WND.

Ritter suggested that up to 80 percent of the pocketknives sold in America today either are one-handed opening knives or so-called assisted opening knives ? and they all suddenly would be classified as illegal switchblades. He said the proposal, which puts pocketknives in the classification of switchblades ? described by a Senate committee as “almost exclusively the weapon of the thug and the delinquent” ? isn’t fair. “There are 40 million people in America walking around with pocketknives in their pocket,” he said.

Further, the majority of crimes committed with knives are done with the “lowly kitchen knife,” he said.

According to Ritter’s website, the proposed revocation of the approval for “assisted opening knives,” would impact “most other pocketknives, even simple old-fashioned slip-joints.”

DR. ROGUE RESPONDS TO AFTERMARKET COMMITTEE REQUEST FOR AGENDA ITEMS– Sorry about the delay in responding, I was ragged from riding back from covering the event in PA and crashed on the couch. The Motorcycle Metal and Mayhem event was great. So good we never made it to Ohio to cover the drags DUH. I will get you some thing on it as soon as I can.

In reference to SEMA I think one of the most important things they can do at this time is to help Stop Cops from Confiscating Motorcycles for bullshit reasons like the transmission, front ends, exhaust, etc. are not what came on the vehicle when it left the factory.

This is very similar to what they already accomplished with cars and hot rods where components were changed in years passed. For example it is Not Illegal to change a transmission on a motorcycle. Just say you decide you want a BAKER or Jims transmission because you feel they are superior to what you have. By doing so the new transmissions have their own serial numbers and are definitely not Harley. When the cops run the numbers from Harley and the transmission number is now different in some cases they want to confiscate the motorcycle.

They know in most cases the transmission is not stolen but still want to take the motorcycle in hopes that they can some how ending up keeping it.

Apply the same thing to front ends or other parts. I have written before about Connecticut Trooper John Kenny and the Motorcycle Task Force who have been doing this for years. This Has To Stop!

SEMA has stopped law enforcement from confiscating cars and trucks and should be able to educate the motorcycle industry how they did it. Manufactures of aftermarket parts would surly benefit from this as well as the consumer.

There are many other benefits and I will get into some more soon.In the mean time I have asked Mike Greenwald to respond to you as well.

For Sale – 1 Wife – Slightly Used – 1964 Model–Reply to: sale-pkwts-1204476414@craigslist.org

For Sale? One (1) Wife, slightly used, 1964 Model Needs muffler, as it is currently VERY LOUD. Intake valve is stuck in the open position. Rear end needs major overhaul. A crack there has grown monstrously large. Needs re-wiring?Many wires are currently crossed. Lots of little dings in the body, which have been covered up with too much paint in a failed effort at camouflaging them.

Needs re-upholstering?Carpet has turned a dingy gray. Needs front-end work–Headlights are too close to the ground, and fenders are too far apart. May not pass emissions test, as it currently produces foul clouds of malodorous gases on a regular basis, Heater works great. Hot air is never in short supply..

Asking $500 or trade for 2000 model.

Demon’s Cycle Partnership with Utima Produces New High Performance Motor–Demon’s Cycle Inc. and Ultima Motorcycle Products have teamed up to produce and make available to the Performance oriented motorcycle public a motor that has never before been available and which will become the new standard by which all V-twins are compared.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) June 5, 2009 — Demon’s Cycle Inc. and Ultima Motorcycle Products have teamed up to produce and make available to the Performance oriented motorcycle public a motor that has never before been available and which will become the new standard by which all V-twins are compared. As a competitor, it by far exceeds the capabilities of engine offered by Harley-Davidson. The new design configuration is built upon tried and proven engine configuration but is clearly superior in all respects and vastly outperforms the competition in many ways. Not just another quality engine. The designers of this high performance model built in too many features to list but the most distinguishable are noted below. Demon’s Cycle and Ultima are foremost in cutting edge performance related style and quality mechanical innovation. The new engine offered here clearly demonstrates that they have found the secret which others had previously sought after but have come up short until this time. Here are some of the differences and advantages of the new Demon’s 114 engine in comparison to the Ultima 113 ci engine:

The 113 has a 4 1/2 in stroke and a 4″ bore. The 113 is an under square motor (more stroke than bore) and has much higher piston speed (linear feet per second) than the Demon’s 114″ which has a 4″ stroke and 4 1/4 bore. They have managed to reduce piston speed in Demon’s 114″ Motor’s.
This reduction in piston speed results in less wear on the cylinder walls and piston skirts. So it’s the most reliable engine out there on today’s market. This is the future engine and they sell it for the same price as a 113″ Ultima engine with special air cleaner, better rocker boxes and thicker head gasket for more reliability and dependability.

Also, the increase in rod ratio (rod length divided by stroke) lessens the side load on the cylinder walls, reducing friction, heat, and allowing a much more free reving motor.

By utilizing the MWM 248 cam we were able to retain the great torque characteristics down low and with the increased cylinder fill provided by the increased rod ratio, the Demon’s 114 will still pull very hard on the top end.

“We have made the first reliable high performance engine ever created. We nailed the task. It will create many very happy customers,” says Artem Rodos, Demon’s Cycle VP.

Another advantage of the shorter stroke is that the Demon’s 114″ is smoother than the 113. Being based on the 4 1/4″ bore engine family, the Demon’s 114″ has the much stronger 3 piece crankshaft used in the 120/127/130/140 series of motors, along with the much stronger rods.
Billet rocker boxes with holes allow for much better cooling and breathing of the engine. Demon’s custom billet air intake system allows for much better air flow and unrestricted performance.

‘We should mention that the Demon’s 114 is .125 shorter than a 120/127 for those early Softail frames that are very difficult to fit a 120/127 in. And, a lot more exhaust systems will fit with less hassle than on a 120/127 engines.’

Craig Betz Arlen Ness bike reduced

Family donates Arlen Ness bike to raise funds for kids with special needs– Craig Betz of California was a longtime motorcyclist and a new member of the international motorcycle group Hamsters, USA. Last fall, shortly after being inducted into the group at the 2008 Sturgis Rally, Betz lost his battle with cancer. His most beloved possession was arguably his custom Arlen Ness Speed Liner motorcycle, built by world-famous bike builder Arlen Ness.

As part of Craig?s legacy, his sister Cecily Betz donated his motorcycle as a fundraiser for the non-profit organization Children?s Care Hospital & School, which serves children with special healthcare and educational needs. Rapid City is located in the foothills of the Black Hills, just 30 miles from Sturgis.

Raffle tickets are available now for $25 at www.biketickets.com The drawing will be held at the Hamsters, USA annual banquet during the Sturgis Rally on August 3, 2009. The winner will be notified by phone, and the bike will be signed for the winner by Arlen Ness and his sons, Cory and Zack, also builders. The 2006 Arlen Ness Speed Liner has a 124? S&S motor and Baker 6- speed transmission.

Hamsters, USA spokesman Grady Pfeiffer says the group is known for their big hearts when it comes to children. ?We are really pleased that Craig and Cecily chose to remember special kids through the Hamsters, USA organization and Children?s Care. This is a really nice testament to who Craig was.?

Children?s Care of Rapid City, served over 1200 children last year. It is affiliated with Children?s Care Hospital & School, based in Sioux Falls, SD . Children?s Care is a private, independent, non-profit organization with a mission to help children with special needs reach their best-possible potential. Funds raised through the raffle will provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies, plus special educational and psychological services. The organization as a whole served over 2600 children last year.

Uncleroad

UNCLE MONKEY’S FAVORITE STRETCH OF ROAD–My favourite stretch of road is several miles of highway between Melville and Yorkton Saskatchewan. As a road goes it is pretty bland; railroad to the east, a scattering of farm yard houses to the west with a few trees and sloughs thrown in to break things up. As boring that section of road is it always brings a smile to my face.

Maybe it is because I’m getting close to one of my favourite dealership. A chance to buy new goodies, to checkout the new rides, an opportunity to talk to a dealer who really understands the motorcycles we ride, their history and the heritage that has help make them an icon of this great land.

Maybe it is because it could be any stretch of road in North America. It is common, simple and tranquil. Even though every time I’ve rode it I’ve almost been hit head on by someone not paying attention, it gives me a chance to let go. I’m not compelled to prepare for the next hairpin corner. There is no looming precipice just beyond a guardrail or a wall of solid granite that is measured in miles thick next to my shoulder. It isn’t miles of concrete and steel of industry and wealth or a rolling countryside that stretches out through time and history. No it is just a simple stretch of road.

Rarely do we admit it, but we all have that special piece of road that unexpectedly tugs at our soul. Unspectacular and common it doesn’t have a name like the Dragons Tail and riders from all over the world don’t make a pilgrimage to ride it. No it is simple, honest and hardworking. It is like us. It is there steady and constant through the good times and the bad. It reminds us of home, reminds us of the times we are the happiest. We ease off the throttle and slump back into our seats and let the road carry us away. No longer man and machine together as one but simply a person in time and place.

PEDESTRIAN DETECTION TECHNOLOGY–Sensors, cameras, radar, lasers, detection technology, motion sensors . .. no this isn’t about spaceflight. This is all new technology that willbe more and more prevalent in newer autos each year. The whopper for thisyear is the new Volvo S60.

The S60 is over the top, even for the Swedes. The car will be the firstto employ what is being called “Full Autobrake and Pedestrian Detection.” Through a complex mixture of radar, cameras and software the car will”see” people in the crosswalk or to the rear of the vehicle even if thedriver does not and bring itself to an immediate stop.

According to a spokesperson at Volvo in response to some questions askedby the MRF the S60 will detect motorcycles moving or stationary. Volvosaid, “The system is being designed for vehicles including motorcycles, stationary or moving in the same direction. This means that the systemwill apply the brakes if a motorcycle is detected and it is determinedthat the driver of the car is not acting to avoid the accident.”

While that may be true in the lab, one cannot help being skeptical in areal world application. This technology may work, but what happens whenan entire generation learns to drive with this technology? We know humanscan be lazy naturally. Encouraging it could prove to be a slippery slope.

THERE IS A PARALLEL BETWEEN MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS AND SEMA, THE CAR GUYS– Common Ground includes but is not limited to the following.Federal regulations and design specifications.Federal regulations that prohibit modifications that have a negative effect on safety equipment features.

Special federal requirements for products manufactured abroad.
Product defect/recall requirements.
Federal and State emissions compliance requirements. In many cases, there has been confusion about the process by which requirements can be met and Executive Orders (E.O.s) from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are issued for applicable parts and systems.

Roadblock safety inspections.
Lighting.
Brake Hoses and Brake Hose Assemblies.
Rims/Wheels for Vehicles other than Passenger Cars.
Tires.
Inclusion and Exclusion in Federal and State mandated insurance requirements.

In addition to these shared concerns, motorcyclist rights advocates have purchasing power and influence others within their pier groups that are very similar to those covered in a June 09 article entitled Trends in eCommerce: Importance of Consumer Behavior and Perceptions.

FEMA logo

EUROPEAN NEWS FROM FEMA–Motorcyclists’ Protection Guardrails: CEN members give priority to details rather than saving lives–Last week, CEN’s technical committee on road equipment (TC226) held its annual meeting in Berlin. The draft standard which would make guardrails safer for motorcyclists was not on the agenda for adoption. Too many comments received. FEMA will push again this issue at the next sub-committee meeting (TG1) in September!

The Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) is sad to announce that its efforts to get the draft standard for motorcycle-friendly guardrails adopted in 2009 have not been successful. The draft proposal, based on the Spanish standard, has not been submitted for the formal voting in Technical Committee 226, which met on Thursday and Friday last week in Berlin, due to more than a hundred comments received.

One may reasonably ponder the reasons behind such an amount of comments over an existing standard with proven efficiency records, also used by several other countries in their national efforts to find a solution for motorcyclists hitting crash barriers. Indeed, every stakeholder around the table is defending different interests in the development of the standard, or indeed non-development, and economic interests at stake are not negligible.

FEMA’s General Secretary, who has actively participated in the preparation of the draft, says: “I believe some CEN participants tend to forget the reality behind the objective. Some participants are trying to minimize the problem while some others only focus on detailed technical criteria in order to have the best standard at first shot. But the truth is that motorcyclists are being killed sliding on roads in the meantime. And to those who complain that this issue is a minor problem considering the number of motorcycles in comparison to other vehicles, I would like to strongly remind them of one very essential principle in road safety: whatever minority or majority of road users it is about, in no way should the safety of some endanger the life of others! FEMA wouldn’t have spent 20 years of energy and motorcyclists’ money if this was not a real issue!”

The next TC266 sub committee (TG1) meeting is expected to take place sometime in September. FEMA will propose to split comments received into 2 categories: those that can be considered for this version of the standard and those to be analyzed once the standard has been adopted, hopefully not later than 2010.

EXCLUSIVE: FRONTLINE police will be forced to become “carbon cops” under the Government’s blueprint to cut greenhouse emissions–The Herald Sun can reveal Australian Federal Police agents will have to prosecute a new range of climate offences. But they are yet to be offered extra resources, stretching the thin blue line to breaking point.

“The Government is effectively saying to us, ‘Ignore other crime types’,” Australian Federal Police Association chief Jim Torr said.

The group had been trying for months, without success, to discuss the issue with Climate Change Minister Penny Wong, he said.

Interpol has warned the carbon market will be irresistible to criminal gangs because of the vast amounts of cash to be made. Possible rorts include under-reporting of carbon emissions by firms and bogus carbon offset schemes.

“If someone is rorting it by even 1 per cent a year, we’re talking about many, many millions of dollars,” Mr Torr said.

The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme is facing Senate defeat unless it can secure the support of key cross-benchers or the Opposition.

Opposition climate change spokesman Andrew Robb said the scheme was problematic.

I’m asking for a donation of just $10 or $15. You can donate by credit card or check – it’s very easy and can be done by visiting www.firstgiving.com/genevieveschmitt.

Thanks for letting me into your day by reading this. I sincerely appreciate what you can do for me to help me reach my goal.

A full report on my ride with both video and photos can be found on my Web site, http://www.WomenRidersNow.com , a few weeks after I return in late August.

BIKERNET FAMILY COUNSELING SEMINAR– It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there’s nothing worse than an oversensitive woman.

My name is Bob. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Debbie. When I took “early retirement” last year, it became necessary for Debbie to get a full-time job along with her part time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age.

I usually get home from the golf course about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don’t yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men’s Grill at the club so eating out is not reasonable. I’m ready for some home cooked grub when I hit that door.

She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it’s not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won’t clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.

Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, boys, we take ’em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days. That way she won’t have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn’t hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points.

When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I’m a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too.

I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Debbie. I’m not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.

Signed,

— Bob

SHOWBIKE 2009 RICHIE H. FROM FL– I was born in Freeport, Long Island, New York and at the age of 12 saw my first motorcycle club, Hell’s Angels ride by and that’s all it took, I was hooked! Shortly after I started building bicycles with engines in them, and one after another I built them bigger, better, faster.

By the time I was 20, I had saved enough money to buy my first motorcycle, a 1961 Harley-Davidson Panhead, paid $2000.00 for it. Over the years I had rebuilt the engine, transmission, rewired and refined every part on that bike.

The only things I did not do was paint and chrome as I sent these out to be done. I moved to Florida in 1999 (too cold in N.Y.) and decided to make it a show bike. The awards and trophies I’ve won over the year’s makes the experience and building time all worth it. It’s become a part of me, and my life.

Richieshow

I’m retired now and the enjoyment I get from people looking at the workmanship and detail in this machine is just amazing.

Now a bit about this bike-82′ stroker(3.5×4.25)Truit&Osbourn flywheels, S&S heavyduty rods and KeithBlack 9.5to1 Pistons. Exhust’s are 1.75″ Gooseneck drag pipes (no baffel’s). Andrews B cam, chromemoly pushrods by S&S, and solid lifters.

PanHeads are ported and polished by me, valves are Black Diamond with Sifton spring’s and retainer’s.The polished carb is a vintage S&S Super B (early 1970’s). The oil pump is also polished and HV by S&S and it all run’s thru a 05 Buell oil cooler mounted on the left front.

This is not just a showbike, I ride 10K a year and there is nothing more than I rather do than ride and show. I would like to thank everyone for the time and help they have given.

Kawasaki

Woman-owned Houston Kawasaki Store Awarded Multi-million Military Contract–When Shannon Tracy, the owner of UV Country Kawasaki in Houston, found out that the United States Special Operations Command was searching for a tough new tactical vehicle, she made a bid to provide the SOCOM with a large number of Kawasaki Teryx RUVs.

Having provided units to the military in June 2008, Tracyfigured the Teryx was an excellent choice for the military’s requirements for something tough, lightweight, quick and agile.

The military decided on the 2009 Teryx after conducting extensive research and numerous evaluations of everything from regular utility vehicles to expensive custom fabricated equipment.

Tracy’s efforts have paid off.Following the final round of evaluations, SOCOM awarded a contract worth up to $28,390,453 to UV Country. The woman-owned-small-business is scheduled to deliver up to 1,625 units over a five-year period under what’s called an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract. This type of contract provides for an indefinite quantity of supplies or services during a fixed period of time.

TORIAN LEATHER AND BIKERNET TESTIMONIAL LETTER–Just wanted to drop you a line and thank you for turning me on to Torian Leathers. I saw the ad on Bikernet and was interested in buying a Leather Workshirt. I called and left a message. Jeff called me back a few days later. We ended up jaw jacking for about twenty minutes.

I told him I’ve known you for over thirty years and he said he had just spent a time on the phone with you that day. Jeff and I both have Armenian backrounds so he told me an interesting story. It seems that a few years back Jeff went to the Sacramento Mile bike races. He worked a deal to get in the pits by trading a Hot Wheels #98 Agajanian car for a pit pass. The guy he traded with is my cousin, Chris Agajanian! We got a good laugh on that one.

I’m looking forward to getting my new leather from Jeff. He wants me to send him a picture of me on my scoot wearing his jacket when I get it. Cool. I also have spoken to Chris Kallas, I bought a print of a nice Panhead chopper from him. We got to talking and I mentioned that you had run a picture of my scoot from the Grand National Show, and he said, “You mean the orange one with the goldleaf flames?”

I was blown away. I also found a magnifying glass size picture of me and my bro’s on MCart at one of the first MMA toy runs from Griffith Park to Pasadena, you were probably there too.

Oh, before I split I also wanted to thank you for spilling your guts about how our hearts (and bodies) change when we get up to and past the big “six-0”. We are blessed to still be vertical and speaking semi-coherently at this age. The young guys need to hear it so they can hopefully save some for later.

I’m enjoying the Motorcycle and Hot Rod/Custom stuff as much if not more now than when we lived our lives at 100MPH non-stop. Remember, “Old age and treachery overcome youth and enthusiasm every time!” Back in the neighborhood we called them the old vatos, the veteranos, now we are them. Thanks for Bikernet and for being my brother,

God Bless you,

Dakar

KTM Withdraws from Dakar Rally–KTM says it will no longer be represented at the Dakar rally, as of late held in South America, either with an official factory team or a KTM-supported team following the organizing body’s decision to allow only bikes with a maximum displacement of 450cc.

The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), organizers of the “South American Dakar” made the decision today, June 4. The new rule goes into effect for the next race, in January 2010.

While professionals and past champions who planned to ride larger machines will be allowed only on the smaller bikes in 2010, the ASO says amateurs planning to ride larger machines will be forced to use a “bridle” to limit performance “to the level of the 450cc.”

Here’s what else the ASO has to say: “For several years, more and more of the top bikers have won specials or finished in the leading ten overall positions using under 450cc bikes. Financially more accessible and more reliable than the older bikes of the previous generations and now more adapted to the demands of off-road rallies, the 450cc still have a deficit in performance that prevent them from reaching even higher ambitions. This difference will be totally erased for the 2011 Dakar, during which only bikes with engines under 450cc will be accepted.”

KTM has enjoyed eight consecutive victories in the world-renowned rally event. A KTM communiqu? suggests the ASO’s change to the rules was designed to end the dominance of KTM and came without any advance warning.

“Every sport regulation needs changes and adjustments to new developments to retain an interest in it, but this also requires the appropriate lead times,” says KTM Motor Sport Advisor Heinz Kinigadner. “We have the entire material for the 690 Rally motorcycles for our factory team as well as that for 50 customers’ motorcycles in our storage facility ready to be constructed in June. Riders’ contracts have been finalized and all the team members have been engaged.”

Following the decision for the deployment of 450cc motorcycles, which KTM calls “unthinkably unsuitable” for use in long distance rallies, the OEM says it can no longer economically justify a commitment to be engaged in the Dakar in the future.

“The financial consequences that results from this decision are enormous,” Kinigadner says. “Quite apart from this, we are shocked by the organizer’s lack of loyalty above all, because of the huge efforts we made following the cancellation of the Dakar in 2008 by contributing to the new edition ? even during a period of extreme economic crisis.”

KTM riders Marc Coma and Cyril Despres finished the rally in first and second places, respectively, at the 2009 South American Dakar.

Proner & Proner File Suit Against N.Y.S. Police for Illegally Stopping Bikers– NEW YORK, NY ? (Marketwire) ? 06/08/09 ? Proner & Proner, Attorneys at law, have filed a Federal class action lawsuit in the Federal Court for the Northern District of New York against the New York State Police as well as New York State and county authorities to stop them from conducting motorcycle-only roadblocks near popular motorcycle events.

Last year the New York State Police and county sheriffs stopped every motorcycle en route to twelve different events for “safety checks.” With the riding season starting, the New York State Police expect to conduct up to fifteen motorcycle-only roadblocks throughout the state this year. The events targeted include Americade in Lake George, the largest motorcycle event in the Northeast.

Mitchell Proner, an active motorcyclist and personal injury attorney, is initiating the lawsuit on behalf of all motorcyclists. Mr. Proner said that the New York State Police “uses the pretense of safety inspections to delay and harass motorcyclists without any reasonable belief that any laws are being broken.” Although courts have upheld DWI checkpoints as generally permissible, “These motorcycle roadblock stops are lengthy and do not address any legitimate safety concerns,” according to Mr. Proner.

QUOTE FROM BIKERNET MBA PROGRAM– A man owned a small chopper shop, The Department of Labor claimed he was not paying proper wages to his staff and sent a representative out to interview him.

I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,’ demanded the rep.

‘Well, replied the owner, ‘there’s my wrench hand who’s been with me for 3 years, I pay him $400 a week plus free room and board. The cook/receptionist has been here for 8 years, and I pay her $250 per week plus free room and board. Then there’s the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $50 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of whiskey every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife the cook/receptionist occasionally.

That’s the guy I want to talk to…the half-wit, says the agent.

That would be me, replied the shop owner.

The History of Biker Poetry

Poetry78567jjsturh

You can ask twenty poets about the history of Biker Poetry‚ and you will get twenty completely different accounts of the same events. This is my version of the History of biker poetry. Find a comfortable chair and sit, this may take some time.

Before you can ask where and when did biker poetry start, you first must ask what is biker poetry? Biker poetry is a combination of rhythmic tales of the road combined with the unmistakable feel of Freedom. Notice the capital in the ‘F‚’ of Freedom. This is one word I believe so strongly in, I think it has earned its right to be capitalized. I challenge you to find an organization that embraces life’s freedoms more then bikers. Now that we have defined biker poetry lets assemble a timeline to go with it.

Poetry78567

The 1960s The Haight Ashbury Years

A little history, The 60s were a time of change, We were at war, when all we wanted was peace. Those who did not support the war chose to grow their hair and expand their minds. Many of them moved to California. In the Haight Ashbury area there was an explosion of culture. You had bands such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane along with Big brother and the Holding Company. All did their own thing in their own time living an almost communal life. People were speaking their mind and you could find poetry in every coffee house and on crowded corner.

You may ask what do Hippies have to do with Biker Poetry? You have the question, and I have the answer.

Poetry09

At the very same time the Peace and Love hippy movement was forming a new breed was forming as well, Leather clad chopper riding outlaws, Bikers but not just any bikers, Outlaw Bikers. The AMA labeled these non- conformists 1%ers. They stripped their bikes down and made them an extension of their own being. The Hells Angels were often used for security by concert promoters at this time. It was only a matter of time before the Outlaw Bikers‚ and the Hippies co-mingle. After all they had the same views on a lot of subjects and were more similar then you might think.

Poetry03

This time period brought a lot of people together that normally wouldn’t cross paths. You had the Merry Pranksters and the Hells Angels expanding their minds together. In a nonjudgmental environment. Some of the beatnik poets became Bikers and some of the bikers became poets. Biker poetry is born.

Poetry034

The first real biker poet who comes to mind wasn’t a biker at all, but he could have been. His name was Hunter S Thompson. A well known writer/poet, he produced some very psychedelic works while running with the Hells Angels. Later on he even wrote a book about his experiences, which later became a movie. There are two real bikers that come to mind though that produced some great works around that time as well. Their names escape me right now, but the names are not important, the words are.

Poetry7856

The ‘70s, The Out Of Control Years

The summer of love was dead. There was a major struggle for power in the biker scene. People were literally dieing in the streets. The hippies all got scared and ran away. I imagine a lot of them got jobs and blended in to society. Not bikers though, it got real bad for us a group, thanks to the media and stereotypical movies that portrayed bikers as long haired smelly killers. Some were, but that was a very small number.

Poetry78567jj
JJ Solari reciting poetry in the Easyriders Studio.

Poetry faded away in the early to mid ‘70s. You would see you occasional poem in one of the biker ragazines of the time, but it was what you could call an accepted media form for a biker. Besides we were not allowed anywhere around poetry. We scared people and we knew it. There were a few poets out there though. They were not well known at the time, two of them were The Reverend K. Peddlar Bridges, Colorado T Sky and Renegade from Easyriders. They had a big role in biker poetry, so I will speak of them more later on.

Poetry53

The ‘80s Poetry reborn into a new life

The biker of the ‘80s was starting to grow strong and shed some of the stereotypes Hollywood had thrown at them. Bikers grew as a whole and so did the poetry. Magazines such as Easyrider and Outlaw biker had house poets, and poetry once again was seeping back into the coffee houses, but this time the movement takes us out east.

Peddlar and Sky hooked up, and they were making some noise. People were listening and taking their poetic words to heart. People could identify with what they were saying. Biker poetry didn’t only appeal to the biker. It also gained the interest of the working man and the college student.

Poetry78

The poetry told a story that many could place themselves within. Bikers were still outcasts but they were starting to gain acceptance. Some of their edges had smoothed out over time. Another biker on the Scene was New Jersey native Eddie “Sorez the Scribe” Pliska. He reached bikers all over the country thanks to his gig in Outlaw Biker .

Things were on the move upward for us poets, but we were still a cult type subculture.

Poetry78567jjstur
Notorious Hamsters in Sturgis, Dave Perewitz on left, Bob Clark and Donnie Smith.

The 90’s A New Generation is on the rise

In the early ‘90s poetry took a brief hiatus. Things sort of stalled out. The writing didn’t stop but the live gigs slowed down and magazines didn’t publish our works as much as they once did. Some of the well known poets got by, raising a family and working a 9-5. The starving artist was tired of starving. This is about the time I hit the scene.

I’d been riding since I was 15 and writing even longer than that. I was on a search for others like me via the new found internet. I searched long and hard for biker poets like myself and had no luck. It was as if I was the only one.

Poetry02303

In the late ‘90s I started placing my poetry on line and kept the search up for others like me. The first one I came across was Sorez. I knew of his work from my vast collection of old biker rags I had saved from the dumpsters over the years. We shared each others’ works and we both grew as poets. We became blood brothers and continued the search together. The next poet I ran into was Keith “Bandit” Ball. He mentored me and taught me form. And even offered to post my works on his website. (he wrote poetry for Easyriders in the ‘70s under a pen name, but wouldn’t give it up.) We were on a move!!

The New Millennium

Biker Poetry was really getting somewhere. At the Beginning of the Millennium we had old biker poets schooling new biker poets, and working as a well oiled machine. Some old favorites were in the light and some new ones were on the rise. This is about the time Sorez and I hooked up with Sky and Peddlar we brought the words of the seasoned biker poets to a new generation eager to listen, but not only listen participate! A rash of poets came to the surface and joined in with our movement. From all parts of the United States and even a few in Canada.

If you Google “Biker Poetry” a large number of names will jump right off the page at you. A few of them are, but not limited to the following Peddlar, Sky, Sorez The Scribe, Bear, Wolf, as well as myself Panhead Josh. But it’s not just male driven anymore, we got Gypsy Passion, the first Female Biker Poet Laureate! There are many others I have left out, but their part is just as important as the ones I have mentioned.

We now have Biker Poetry month, you can hear our words echo through the camp grounds once again, but now its not just limited to around the fire, in small groups, or down the block at the local coffee house. You can hear the poetic words flow from Laughlin and the Redwoods, from Laconia to Daytona. It’s been a long hard road full of twists and turns but you won’t find us backing off the throttle anytime soon I assure you! This decade has proven to be monumental in proportion. Biker poetry is on the rise, as each poet grabs the pen and scribes the words that drive them as they ride.

Bikers are now writing more then ever, whether it be poetry, biographies or true stories of the road. Sonny Barger has a number of books out that tell tales of biker life. A couple have even been on the best sellers list. Sorez, The Scribe, has a Great book out called Saddle Baggage, and I am working on my first book as we speak. In closing I’d like to leave you with a couple poems that I have carried with me for many years. Below you will find the very first Biker poem I ever read. It was published in a biker magazine long ago. I can’t even tell you which one anymore. The second one I wrote a few years back. It defines the true meaning of being a biker.

I hope you have enjoyed my little history lesson. Some of you will agree with it, some of you will not, and that’s ok. It’s all part of the freedom we all embrace as bikers.

What in the World’s Come Over You?

By Filthy Bill

What in the world’s come over you, Bob?
You used to be so neat.
I bet you haven’t taken a bath in six months.
Hey, man — smell your feet.

Your zits are as big as nickels
And full of yellow puss.
And I hear you’re living in a junkyard,
In the back of an old school bus.

Your blue jeans are so greasy,
They’ve turned a dull black.
And I see you took to wearing
A skull and crossbones on your back.

But Bob, you done good
When you bought that Hog.
And that young girl you got there
Sure ain’t no dog

Yeah, Yeah , I Know
They like to toot that coke,
And smoke that good ol‚
Colombian dope

And stay up late and
Ride that highway bike.
Yeah, man I know what
Them young girls like

Well, man, I got to go
Thanks for the buzz.
I’ll try to get back soon,
And watch out for the fuzz

Now if you need any help
With that young girl you got,
Don’t hesitate to call
I’m Johnny- on-the-spot

Now when others have kissed you off,
I’ll be your friend still.
Live to ride and ride to live,
Your bro forever, Flithy Bill.

The Redhead Called

Pavement as slippery as snot
Visibility non-existent in front of rain-soaked shades
A night as cold as a North Pole grave
But her silken memory never fades

Ninety miles an hour on a flat desert freeway
My front wheel slicing the rain like a skater on ice
Heart pounding against my leather clad chest
Until I find her, I continue to roll the dice

She called me screaming, panic in her voice
He spit her lip in a jealous rage
I whistled to my iron steed, like Roy to Trigger
My eyes went blood red, time to cut the sage

Her eyes as green as emerald marbles
She left me and the city for another venture
But her dire drug slipped under my skin
The sound of her voice on the phone was pure torture

Just 400 miles of rain and terror
An asphalt ribbon of wet careening trucks
I twisted the quick throttle, as if the doorknob to my future
It wouldn't open, just my luck

I rode into the drizzling night without hope
I rode like my tires were on fire, with my heart bungied to my sleeve
I rode because I had no choice
I rode because my soul bereaved

The rain and darkness clouded my vision
My heart clouded my senses
The longing pulled me like a tug pulls a ship
Nothing would stop me, not even chain link fences

What makes a man insane with love?
What tears his brain apart?
What causes him to destroy his life?
For the dream she has a heart

In the speeding darkness I heard the blaring horn
I caught the blinking hi-beams through gray spray
The Harley screamed to stay in line
I had to find a way

The lights bore down upon me
I twisted the throttle once more
Her twinkling eyes held on strong
The big twin locomotive forced me to find the whore

My heart held onto her haunting words
My wind whipped whispers begged for her love
Death would be a welcome escape
From this spellbound emotion, like an iron glove

My chrome grip intensified
I'd free her from violence
Stand tall against her assault
Make her mine, or would she jump the fence?

Facing him was easy
Facing her brought pain
Riding hard delivered nothing
But more dread in the rain

Could I survive the strain?
Would 18 wheels end my plight?
I mentally rolled the dice
And tore into the Arizona night

Alongside pulled the brazen truck honking
The cab lights on
An angelic blond driving
Was she singing a song?

She followed me to the gas stop
Her azure eyes spoke overt joy
I pressed my cold against her full warmth
Suddenly Dale Evans found Roy

Could a tortured asphalt cowboy finds relief
With a voluptuous cowgirl on a leather seat?

5-Ball Factory Racer Build for 2009-2

Crazy Horse Engine Banner2

Chriswtoolbox

Moving right along, I overcame the Wilmington Mung and slipped back into the shop. It’s like self-induced Christmas for the homebuilder each week when UPS arrives or I score something at the bike swap meet. Ya plan, save small bags of gold and reach out to vendors to make deals, then wait.

FB6

I got all pumped when the bronze risers drifted in from DPPB in Europe, and I immediately tackled the mounting and handlebars. I hit two hardware stores looking for the proper length hardened studs and the second score was doubtful, but I rolled the dice and bought them anyway. As it turned out, 3-inch ½-inch studs with coarse threads on one end and fine on the other worked perfectly.

FB3

FB4

FB5

I tested the fitment by wrapping masking tape around the fine end 3/8-inch up from the bottom. I screwed them into the narrow Paughco leg, and then installed the riser components to see if I had enough length to reach the top bronze nut. I had plenty of threads, so I move the tape to 5/8 inches of securing fine threads and installed all the components. It all fit like a dream.

FB2

Then I went to work searching the shop for a set of bars that would give me the look and be reasonably comfortable. I’m shooting for that 5-Ball Factory Racer look, but a bike comfortable enough to ride to Sturgis. That’s always the acid test, and the road-test adventure. I found a set of sorta TT 1-inch bars sans the dimples, since I was going to turn them upside down. I mounted them to the risers, and then determined that I could cut almost three inches out of the center.

FB8

FB10

FB11

I searched the shop for a chunk of mild steel rod that would make the perfect alignment, strengthening slug for the bars. I removed the burrs from the split tubing and marked the slug center. I tapped it into place, strapped the bars down, so they were perfectly aligned, and MIG-welded them. Just having the bars and risers in place was a rush.

FB12

I finally muscled enough cash to have all my welding tanks filled. I took the opportunity to have one tank filled with pure Argon for welding stainless or aluminum. I’ve never welded aluminum, so I broke out my welding book and read the appropriate chapter. I needed twice the gas pressure and almost twice the rod speed and power.

FB15

FB16

Let me back up for a second. The project was mounting the Crime Scene Rapide headlight. It was a bolt-on procedure, except for the simple aluminum-mounting bung. Once in place, it was impossible to remove the headlight-mounting fastener. I reviewed my options. The fastener would actually touch the top Paughco springs. I looked for an option and found one, but it required welding the existing square bung to the fine-threaded round spacer. I tapped the spacer for clean threads, and then proceeded to weld the two together.

FB19

DBBP Banner

Paughco Banner

FB20

This was a trick. Aluminum must be extremely clean before welding. And since this piece was very small, it could heat up and melt like butter before one pass was completed. I also had some problems with the welder. Since aluminum heats and expands faster that steel, I needed to bore out the tip or run a larger welding tip. The tips come in various sizes, and natch, I didn’t have a slightly larger tip. So Jeremiah grabbed a micrometer and all my tiny drill bits, and started to study the sizes and attempted to drill the tips out. Interesting procedure. We broke bits and jammed them into the bronze MIG welding tips. Finally we succeeded in boring out a tip and the welding moved along.

FB23

FB26

FB27

Then I took to grinding, filing, and rewelding until this headlight bracket was completed. Not bad. I need Jeremiah, the master shaper, to return and give it his final touch.

FB30

FB31
Paughco carries all the vintage replacement parts, including old footboards and the rare mounting hardware.

Next, I had a plan to use as many vintage H-D parts as possible. I snatched a stock 1936-1957 mechanical brake pedal and mounting plate, which also acted as the front peg or footboard mount. Paughco already made a bracket that bolts under the front motor mount. It makes the stock mounting bosses available for these components.

FB34
This is the ’98 Dyna brake pedal and linkage.

This effort placed me eyeball-to-eyeball with a couple of challenges. I needed to make the old mechanical brake pedal operate a hidden hydraulic master cylinder and somehow I had to create a mounting bracket for the rear of the footboard.

FB37

There was one more element rearing its ugly head at this point, but yet we turned it into an opportunity. There was no fifth stud mounting plate on the frame, so I started to tinker with a chunk of angle iron. Then I discovered a complete ’98 Dyna rear brake set-up with linkage and the master cylinder. Suddenly, lots of answers were available using the fifth stud-mounting placement.

FB38

I had to stop dead in my tracks right there. I needed to make sure the transmission was aligned properly for the whole system to work. The brown Santa arrived with a new BDL Softail, 2-inch enclosed belt drive system I’d ordered just a couple of days ago. I pulled out the inner primary, loosened all the mounting bolts for the engine and trans and started my historic alignment procedure. First, I bolted down the rear of the engine and looked for any gaps at the front motor mount. It had a .020 gap. I found a shim and slipped it into place.

FB45

FB46
Interesting locking nut system from JIMS.

FB42

FB43

Next, I attached the BDL inner primary and pulled the JIMS tranny into alignment with the Crazy Horse V-Plus engine. Then I started on the fifth tranny stud-mounting bracket. I planned to run a kicker, and since this power plant is 100 inches strong, the additional mounting element will strengthen the entire driveline.

FB48

New Jims banner

US Chopper banner

FB50

No, this system didn’t fall into place. I had oil lines to contend with and the brake pedal and master cylinder didn’t align. At first, I had a grand plan to bend the linkage rod into a jog-over to reach the tab I had welded onto the brake pedal pivot tube. That would have created more problems, specifically with the rear footboard mounting. I needed to straighten it out and machine a 2-inch offset link from the pedal over, which kept the entire system in alignment. The critical aspect will be my tab welding. There will be considerable strain on that puppy, but I think it will work.

FB51

FB56

Then I ran a ½-inch rod off the top of the pedal bracket and machined a spacer that would catch an original classic footboard-mounting arm. I’m trying to tack-weld everything so I can make final adjustments or catch mistakes before it’s too late. I like welding and sometimes can’t stop myself. I tack my handiwork, step back, eyeball it, check it twice and weld the shit outta it. The next morning I discover something I forgot and I’m fucked.

FB55

FB53

Since I was into footboards, I moved onto the left one. With the help of Sin Wu on her knees, we checked the angle of my 2003 Road King footboards and attempted to match that angle on the 5-Ball Factory Racer. Again, I used a stock mounting plate with foot clutch pedals. I’m going to make the racer a tank shift, so I bolted up the mounting plate and a vintage kicker arm and bracket, but I needed to drill and tap the Paughco bracket for the lower left 5/16 kickstand mount.

FB57

I tried to handle a few moves at once and failed. I broke off the tape in the kickstand mounting hole and I’m still pondering my options. I shifted back to floorboard mounting. I was burnin’ daylight trying to remove the tap. I mounted the front of the footboard and snugged it down at the Sin Wu estimated floorboard angle, then pondered how to mount the rear to the BDL outer primary.

FB59

FB61

FB63

I had to insert the BDL mounting studs into the inner primary with red Loctite first, then the aluminum stud arms, and finally the cool, clean outer primary cover. This turned out to be a breeze. I took a vintage footboard mount, cut it off, and welded it to a Bandit-made bracket. It had to carry my weight, so I added a strengthening gusset to the bottom and believed I was good to go.

Phil’s speed shop wiring system. That box holds the ignition switch, starter relay, circuit breakers and high/low beam switch and neutral light.

In the next segment, we will start to tackle the shift linkage system. Duane Ballard’s wife, Lisa, a contributor for the Cycle Source magazine, delivered this vintage tractor seat assembly for us to test and you’ll see our wacky test next issue. We might also start to tackle mounting the Paughco/U.S. Choppers tanks, Phil’s Shop wiring system and the Biker’s Choice Speedometer, which we hope to mount in the tradition of rear-wheel driven speedometers of the ’20s.

FB69
Parts, pieces and of course a 5-Ball for the shift linkage.

FB71
Paughco tool box mounting coming soon.

It’s all headed your way in the next couple of weeks.

5-Ball Factory Racer Build for 2009-1

Paughco Banner

Engine

Hey, it's the start of the official Sturgis 2009 project bike, the 5-Ball Factory Racer. For decades guys have built vintage- looking scooters with late model drive-trains. Hell, I built another one at Strokers Dallas in the '90s. Before I dreamed of it, Arlen Ness built a '20s vintage scooter and sidecar around a Sportster engine. Randy Simpson built vintage kit bikes. Don Hotop built some of the finest vintage-styled customs and just last week, I saw a '20s styled bike at the SEMA show in Las Vegas built by the Shadley Brothers for House of Kolors. Beautiful piece. So I ain't the first by a long shot.

Old shot
Old shot of an early H-D from the Bob T. Collection.

But there is something in the air recently respecting the old iron and bringing it back to life. Some of it has to do with restrictions, and building older bikes is unrestricted. Some of it has to do with nostalgia and some is just a wild departure from the last project. I'm excited every year about this learning process. It's like painting one picture on a massive canvas, finishing it successfully, and then pondering the next easel. I get pumped and begin to research what's available.

Nash kicker
The Nash kicker is the new breed of kickers.

Billy Lane inspired me with his recent Henderson four custom and his notion to find vintage engines and build bikes around them. We traded a 1913 Pope engine for a '20s H-D Peashooter single that I will ultimately build a Salt Flats racer out of with the help of Todd's Cycle. Dennis is working on the frame and tank.

Rick 15

Rick Krost has also been inspirational with his board track racer frame and chassis kit. He was having a tough time finding a manufacturer for his intricate frames, so we drove to Carson City, Nevada and I introduced him to the chopper original, Ron Paugh from Paughco. Paughco Inc. began as a machine shop run by Ron's dad in the '60s when Ron jammed into the shop one day and asked his dad if he could build a Panhead inner primary. They've been building bike parts ever since. Ron was a natural to take on the vintage U.S. Chopper frame.

shortenedframe
Here's the shortened example of the Factory Racer from U.S. Choppers.

Shortframe2

Shortframe3
First bike Rick completed with the shortened frame.

It's a terrific frame and some of the greats in our industry built U.S. Chopper Board Track Customs from Ralph of Knockout Choppers and Vicious Cycles show winner that graced the cover of American Iron recently. But there was an inherent problem with these chassis for a guy 6 foot 4. I was way too tall, but I was still intrigued.

Original Pframe
This is it, the first frame from this model line.

Chris' first illustration. Notice the differences.

I wanted to build one of these, but in my old age status, I needed some size and forward controls. Then Rick started on his second generation model with the Paughco factory, and they called it the Factory Racer. Initially Ron built the first concept frame, this one. Rick didn't feel it fit his scrunched design criteria and asked Ron to shorten it by 6 inches and reduce the rake. Again, it put the U.S. Choppers design configuration out of my too-tall league. My project was threatened.

Wheelsthroughtime contest
You could win this fantastic Knucklehead. Just click here.

I spoke to Rick and told him my concerns, so he developed two frames. In fact, Rick's super-short version turned out to be way too short and he was forced to lengthen it slightly. And so this project began with all Paughco components including their highly secret manufacturing process that allows them to produce absolute classic wide and narrow tapered-leg springers. I went with the narrow job to stay in keeping with the 1915 style.

Chrisillo4

While I ordered parts I reached out to the Bikernet Official 5-Ball Racing Illustrator for an inspirational visual. I fed him information on the format and elements and he made the project come to life. I'm always inspired by each build, but for some reason the 1915 5-Ball Factory Racer held a special significance. We are planning our first Bikernet Vintage Classic Ride and gathering to Sturgis next year, and so perhaps a tradition will emerge.

FBFR2

Billy Lane and Chica would like to tag along when we cut a dusty trail with an assortment of vintage and replica bikes to the Badlands. We are hoping we can make our semi-central meeting place the new location of Dale Walksler's Wheels Through Time Museum in Arizona. I spoke to him this morning and he still doesn't have a desert location.

frontend

frontwheel
I don't have my wheels yet, so I dug up a couple to help me with mock up. Check this puppy, a 17-inch spool hub.

So I was pumped, and I always attempt to build the ultimate bike from a reliability and handling ease standpoint. I always have the notion that this bike will stick with me into my ripe old age; easy to work on, easy to ride, comfortable and durable. I'm not trying to build a show winner or something so exotic that it's not road worthy. I'm after the opposite. I want a bike that is tough as nails and looks that way.

bearings
I also found a fresh set of sealed Timkens and CCI dust covers.

bearinggrease
I didn't overdo the grease, since it will be torn down for a Rollin Sixes paint and powder.

The other code I hoped to follow was one of tradition. Without getting crazy I planned to adopt as many early H-D parts as possible for a Vintage look. Paughco's catalog helped a lot with traditional '20s rectangular footboards, a vertical tool box, and flat side tanks.

All this classic stuff is available through Paughco.

I reached out to Fred Lange for a vintage '20s sprung seat. Nash Motorcycle Company has vintage grips and DBBP in Europe makes bronze dogbone risers. Black Bike Wheels custom-builds 3.50 wide 23-inch wheels and Avon makes tires to fit.

With the smaller dust shield and a bearing on the bottom of the stem, I muscled the front end into the neck. The races were already in place.

I dug through my lockers of parts for old H-D controls, kickstands and miscellaneous items from the rigid frame era and started a stack of parts. I ordered the coolest headlight, taillight, and air cleaner combination from Crime Scene Choppers, their Rapid series.

Recently, I ran across a classic shotgun-styled exhaust system with an approved Suppertrapp tuneable muffler. I was going to make my own system, but this one is killer. Part of it comes from WCC and part from Illusion Cycles.

The key to the success of this project is the drive train. I sought a Crazy Horse V-Plus, 100-inch engine for several reasons. It has a classic design, renewed performance, looks and a left-side carb. I will couple it to a JIMS 5-speed transmission with a Baker kicker unit and a 5-1 shifting drum, so I can run a tank shifter and find neutral without a problem.

trans
I generally run a BDL primary drive and Spyke and Compu-fire electrical components. I'm going to remount the gas tank with Bung King components and Rick Krost is building the oil bag to fit. For some strange reason I'm sick like a puppy dog today, so I'll stop here, but I will be back shortly with an update. If my head would quit throbbing I'd add some highly inspirational closing, but I'm toast. See ya next time.

Custom Chrome 2009 European Dealer Show AMD Championship

Hallout

Custom Motorcycle Mayhem at Mainz/Germany: With one of the biggest and most extraordinary Bikeshows, the CCE Dealer Show and European Championship of Custombike-Building, the 2009 edition of the CUSTOM CHROME EUROPE DEALER SHOW once again topped last years record results in terms of attending dealers, visitors and bikeshow-participants – not to forget the glamourous guest-stars from the US and Germany: Arlen Ness, Marcus Walz and Fred Kodlin. 140+ motorcycles signed in before the event and 116 competitors presented their bikes at Mainz/Germany and made ii the most international bikeshow of Europe and the definite highlight in the European bikeshow calendar.

Garage65

80 Freestyle, 13 Custom Chrome Motorcycles, 23 Modified Harley-Davidson, 6 Competitors of the CCE „Europe’s Next Top Model“ contest and numerous new bikes presented by CCE partners at their booths. Europe’s market leader in customparts-distribution again has teamed up their show with the AMD European Championship of Custombike-Building to create one of the best Custombike-Shows Europe has to offer. 116 awesome custombikes from all over europe and United Arab Emirates participated, competing for three tickets to the World Championship at Sturgis/South Dakota in August 2009 and prices worth something in excess of 30.000,00 €!

Hall

“The quality seen in these bikes is just incredible“, stated both Custom Chrome Europe President Holger Mohr and AMD Show host Chris McGee. In 2009 the show saw the second-biggest number of participating bikes coming from 16 different countries. All three top bikes were international entries, with VERONA BIKE EXPO winner Luigi “Gigi“ Esposito of Big Twin Napoli scoring the most points to win the prestigious EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP title.

Freestyle

The “Panster“ is completely handcrafted by the Big Twin Team: Boardtrack “Made in Italy“! The twisted „Indian Larry“ style frame tubes came from Penz Performance: Ever since Anita used “the real thing“ for her Tiki-Chopper, they know how to bend them. The rest of the frame was forged in view of the volcano mount Vesuvio, routing it tightly around the 883 Sportster engine which has been upgraded with 1200 cc cylinders, heads and „Panhead“ covers. In full racing trim, the engine drive pulley is supported by external bearing, the S&S Super-G is breathing through the air horn, exhaust pointing against the airstream. The most eye-catching detail of the “Panster“ certainly is the strange springer fork: Substituting the straight suspented “fork“ against a curved piece, following the radius of the tire, certainly makes even the hardcore customizers look twice. Sheet metal inserts strenghten the much longer part, otherwise, suspension might act completely different. Two more tech-tricks are not visible at first glance: To have the twisted frame tubes out in the open, the tank moved to the left side of the rear frame, just into the triangle which forms the wheel suspention. Rigid, like on a Boadtracker, of course. The fuel is fed to the S&S carb through a fuel pump hidden under the engine. As the tubes are solid steel, there’s no room for the oil either. So where to put it? If you take a closer look to the primary case, this Sportster primary looks a bit „pregnant“. Which is the point: Welded from original two primary drives and perfectly matched, the oil resevoir is hidden INSIDE the primary casing which features an enclosed 2.5 litre of oil. Tricky!

Freestyle2a
Second place Freestyle.

Second place went to Sturgis-experienced former World Champion 2007 Stellan Egland of SE-Service: His BMW-engined entry is a completly one-off radical design which has never been seen before! Third place went to Andy Niemi from Flying Choppers/Finland with his super-clean Swedenchopper „Cloud 9“ which caught the exe with its pure 70s style lines!Bikeshow-winner Luca Andreoli had also reason to celebrate: As European Champion „Big Twin“ already won his Sturgis-Ticket at Verona, so he will qualify to go to Sturgis too!

Winners
The complete FREESTYLE Winners on stage: Four teams coming from Mainz and the European Championship will compete in the World Championship in Sturgis/South Dakota in August 2009

This year´s “Special Guests“ included legendary bikebuilder ARLEN NESS, world renowned Custombike photographer MICHAEL LICHTER and TED SANDS of Performance Machine, one of the new brands that is listed in the new, again bigger, new 2009 CCE catalogue. ARLEN NESS was awarded with a special exhibition at the event AND received a Custom Chrome Europe “Lifetime Achievement Award“ for his outstanding work. He spent hours signing his autograph to dealers and the public. Arlen Ness is only the third person to receive the Custom Chrome Europe “Lifetime Achievement Award“ at the Custom Chrome Europe Dealer Show, several boxes of books were sold almost at once and and autograph cards became rare on Sunday. Visitors and customizers alike stood in line for Arlen’s signature and to see images from the Arlen Ness Museum. Michael Lichter and “Motographer”, Horst Rösler, acted as curator of the exhibition. Arlen Ness and Victory-Europe National Sales Manager/Branch Manager Jan Breckwoldt presented a Ness-design “Limited Edition“ Victory and European Ness-Motorcycle distributor “Bad Boys Cycles” of Chamoson/Switzerland (www.bbcc.ch), now European importer for Arlen Ness Motorcycles, supported the show with a “Speedliner” and “Highliner” bike. Arlen picked 3 of his favourite Bikeshow participants for a special “Arlen Ness Pick”. The short documentation of his career is now to be seen at www.custom -chrome-europe.com, along with the bikeshow-winners and “Europe’s Next Top Model” winners.

The “CCE Dealer Show” was attended by more new brandnames than ever before: Performance Machine, Legend Air, Freedom Performance, Cycle Visions, Thunderbike, Cyron, West Eagle and Joker Machine parts are now listed in the CCE 2009 catalogue and the Spring Update, which came out at the same time as the massive 1.360 pages hard cover book, featuring more than 2500 new products starting from complete kit bikes down to the smallest part to restore, modify or to pimp-up stock Harley-Davidson models.
