Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton To Spend Thanksgiving With Troops– Kristen Dalton, Miss USA 2009, has announced that she will be spending the Thanksgiving holiday with the men, women and families at Fort Drum Installation Base, home of the 10th Light Infantry Division. She has been called to duty by the USO, a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The announcement was made during a visit to the historic Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

The mission of the 10th Mountain Division is to train and make ready for deployment of almost 80,000 army troops annually. With over 30,000 military men, women, staff members and their families who are based in this New York State camp, Kristen will serve up holiday meals, visit with enlisted soldiers and their families as well as host a movie night.

“I can’t think of anything I want to do more this Thanksgiving than visit our troops. These men and women have given so much for this country and I am honored to be spending this very special holiday with them,” said Kristen Dalton. “I urge all Americans to find a way to volunteer and give back in their honor.”

HUPYBLOG

BATTLE OVER MOTORCYCLE ROADBLOCKS–Illinois recently expanded its roadside safety check program, as have many other states in the summer months. In the mid-1980’s, law enforcement agencies began using roadblocks and roadside safety checks in an attempt to reduce the number of individuals driving under the influence. More recently, roadside safety checks have been used to target motorcyclists. The purpose is purportedly to check license, registration, tail lights, tire pressure and the like, to promote safety in the operation of a motorcycle. However, we have had many clients and friends contact our firm concerned about the ability of law enforcement performing the stop to then find probable cause to investigate other potential violations, including intoxication and the presence of concealed weapons.

The Fourth Amendment guards against unreasonable searches and seizures. Courts have generally ruled that a law enforcement agency must have probable cause to perform a traffic stop, as a traffic stop is generally considered a search and seizure as protected by the Constitution. However, the Supreme Court has historically suggested that a roadblock or roadside safety check for the purpose of checking license and registration can be permissible if it involves minimal intrusion and seizure. The Court uses a balancing test wherein it weighs the state’s interest in performing the stop against the extent and nature of the search and seizure. This means that if the stop is short, and limited to a brief check of license and registration, it has been generally held constitutional.

The issue most motorcyclists are concerned about is not the initial stop. The question I hear most is this; while the police have a motorcyclist stopped for a roadside safety check, if they detect alcohol, drugs, or some other violation, can they perform a more extensive search? The short answer is sometimes. The Supreme Court in City of Indianapolis v. Edmond addressed this very issue. In this important opinion, the Court looked at the primary intent of the roadside safety check. They held that if the primary intent of the roadside safety check is to verify license and registration, then further inquiry to check for violations is permissible after probable cause is established. However, if the roadside safety check has the primary purpose of detecting ordinary criminal wrongdoing, the checkpoint is impermissible.

In short, law enforcement agencies generally have the power, as affirmed by the Supreme Court, to perform reasonable roadside safety checks. If however, those stops are unreasonably intrusive or lengthy, or have the primary purpose of detecting ordinary criminal wrongdoing, the Court will scruitinize the checkpoint closer. If you keep motorcycle license, registration, and insurance up to date, you should only be subjected to a short stop, and be sent on your way.

WILD MUSTANG TRIKE, BIKERS GATHER IN KINGMAN, AZ, TANK FROM PAUGHCO, D&D SLIP ONS, GREAT PARTS FROM LOST BOYS CYCLES IN OREGON, K AND G HAS A NEW WEBSITE AND MORE…

Redmoto

Hey,

This news is wild, and I believe all positive, sorta. New wild models from Moto Guzzi, new products and positive reports from companies. Bad cops and corruption is rampant, but what else is new. Get this from the WEEK magazine this week: Police in Columbus, Ohio, have started telling residents to move somewhere else. At least 20 residents reported to the City Council that when they call 911, the cop tell them, “Why don’t you move out, if you don’t like it.”

A frustrated police spokesman said, “It’s like the O.K. Corral out there.”

Is the world wacky or what? I just got a call that Branscomb Richmond is still hanging on after a very tough surgery, and Suzuki is on the brink of going out of business. But this news contains new models from lots of small American companies. The big guys are having a tougher time than the small tighter companies. Let’s hit the news, and I’ll report on Bikernet progress and upcoming content in the masterful summation:

Hooters Announce Operation Calendar Drop–The over 350 Hooters Restaurants operating in the USA have launched the 6th annual Operation Calendar Drop yesterday on Veteran?s Day, November 11, 2009. Through this program, Hooters plans to send out tens of thousands of calendars to troops overseas during the holidays.

This is how Operation: Calendar Drop works: Hooters customers are encouraged to purchase a 2010 Hooters Calendar and attach a personal note of thanks to one of our troops. After that, Hooters takes care of the rest, covering the expense of getting the calendars, with their personal greetings, shipped to bases overseas and into the hands of our men and women in service. During the six years this program has been running, over 100,000 of U.S. troops have received calendars and notes of appreciation from customers of Hooters all over the U.S.

Mike McNeil, V.P. of Marketing for Hooters of America, commented, ?Hooters has long been a proud supporter of our military members and their families, and Operation: Calendar Drop has been a great way for both Hooters and our customers to show our support and appreciation for all they do.?

The Hooters Calendar is celebrating the 2010 issue as its 24th edition, having originally launched in October of 1986, just 3 years after the first Hooters opened its doors. The award-winning, full-color, wall calendar features over 190 Hooters Girls from around the world.

ANOTHER FACTORY LOCATION SHOT DOWN– Harley-Davidson nixes Shelby County site– Local officials had high hopes for 2,000-employee motorcycle plant By Ted Evanoff Posted: November 6, 2009E-mail Print A A Harley-Davidson has ruled out suburban Indianapolis as a possible site for a 2,000-employee motorcycle plant.

The Milwaukee-based manufacturer disclosed Wednesday it would keep open the existing factory in York, Pa., or relocate the work to a plant it would build at Shelbyville, Ky.

Harley’s decision dashed hopes of a major assembly plant and possibly a related motorcycle museum boosting the tax base just outside Indianapolis near the Shelby County hamlet of Pleasant View on I-74.

“We’re not happy about it. We’re definitely disappointed,” said David Mohr, a Shelby County commissioner. “It would have been good for the state.”

A 2,000-employee plant would have been the largest industrial project in the state since a $141.5 million incentive package helped lure Honda to Greensburg in 2006. Its $550 million Civic assembly plant opened last year.

Harley also crossed Murfreesboro, Tenn., from its site list, narrowing the selection process to York and Shelbyville, Ky. The York Daily Record newspaper reported Wednesday that Harley spokesman Robert Klein called York the preferred choice.

In York, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 175, which represents most workers in the plant, is negotiating a new contract. The company favors new work rules and less absenteeism. Local 175 is expected to vote on the matter next month.

In Shelby County, economic development officials are now trying to market the 100-acre site to other companies considering expansions. Two Japanese, one German and three U.S.-based companies are considering sites in the county, said Dan Theobald, head of the Shelby County Development Corp.

“It’s a good site,” Theobald said. “We’re moving forward, encouraging other companies to go forward. It’s going to become an industrial park.”

Mohr and Theobald said it was not clear why the Shelby County site was dropped from consideration. Harley’s Klein could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The I-74 site is zoned for industrial use but requires the extension of natural gas and wastewater facilities.

“We were able to show them (Harley) how we were going to get it there and the time frame in which we could get it there,” Theobald said. “The site in Kentucky had the same infrastructure issues.”

Earlier this week, Shelby County Commissioners were intent on landing Harley. The officials agreed to hire M.D. Wessler & Associates of Indianapolis to negotiate sewage rates with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works.

That action came after the commissioners decided it would be cheaper and quicker to turn to the Indianapolis system rather than build a wastewater treatment plant at Pleasant View.

Officials with the Indiana Economic Development Corp., which learned of Harley’s decision Wednesday, declined to comment Thursday.

STURGIS Rally bikers can get $10 state park pass– Motorcyclists visiting Custer State Park during the annual Sturgis rally will now pay a flat $10 fee for an extended pass.

During the state Game, Fish & Parks Commission meeting Thursday in Pierre, members voted to change the current pass rules, which charge motorcyclists during the rally $6 for a single passenger or $12 for two. Those passes are good for only seven days.

Under the new system, motorcycles can pay the flat $10 fee beginning on the Monday before the rally. The permit will be good for all state parks until Aug. 22. Motorcycles can also buy an annual pass, which costs $28, at Custer State Park.

BIKERNET PAUSE FOR STATION IDENTIFICATION–Biker comes home, flops in an easy chair, and turns to his old lady and says, “Hurry up and get me a beer! It’s gonna start any minute!”

She looks puzzled, but gets off the couch, goes and gets him a beer.

He takes the beer and chugs it down, pitches the empty, and says, “Hurry up and get me another! It’s gonna start any minute!”

She looks a little pissed, but gets up and retrieves another beer.

He takes this one and tips it up until it is gone, pitches it, and says, “It’s gonna start any minute now! Go get me another beer. Hurry!”

She looks over, face all twisted up, finger pointing, and says, “I’ve been cookin’ and cleanin’ all day, goddamnit! You come home, flop your ass in a chair and start givin’ commands! What do you have to say about that?”

He throws his hands up in surrender and says, “It started!”

The quote from Bill Hall was right on…while you and I and thousands of others were enjoying those freedoms he mentioned, they were quietly taken from us and we have what we have now. BIKERS VOICE ARIZONA CONCERNS– KINGMAN – As a state highway patrol helicopter circled low over head, bikers from 40 motorcycle clubs throughout Arizona met Saturday inKingman.

The meeting held Saturday at the American Legion post in Kingman wasplanned a year ago and is held throughout Arizona by the ArizonaConfederation of Motorcycle Clubs, alternating between Arizona cities.Bullhead City will host a meeting Nov. 7, 2010.

Saturday’s meeting was to be held in Fort Mohave but moved to Kingmanfor a planned ride past four Kingman establishments, which recentlyadopted a no colors policy. Colors are patches on a vest that identifiesa biker’s motorcycle club.

An officer from the state gang task force was parked across the streetfrom the American Legion post, taking photos of the bikers. Police carsfrom Bullhead City and Kingman and from the Arizona Department of PublicSafety drove by, making the law enforcement presence felt. About 500 to600 bikers assembled after the meeting on a ride past the four bars, which included Chuy’s Broiler, Cerbat Lanes, Sportsman Bar and Mad Dog’sin Kingman.

ACMC advocates for biker rights and meets twice a month, discussingissues like helmet or emission laws or pushing for biker-friendlylegislation. There are about 40 clubs in the state, according to DanBalentine, who is president of the Desert Road Riders Motorcycle Club inFort Mohave as well as the secretary for the ACMC.

Balentine said that ACMC is in the process of hiring a third lobbyist towork on the no colors policy initiated by some bars and restaurants inKingman.

One ACMC lobbyist, going by the name of Skypilot, is based at the statecapital in Phoenix and works with the legislators while a secondlobbyist work on federal issues in Washington, D.C. Skypilot reportedthat he is talking with state legislators on motorcycle issues such asright of ways, emissions, discrimination by law enforcement, correctlyfastening license plates and extended yellow lights.

Balentine cautioned bikers during the meeting to obey all traffic lawswhen riding past the four bars, not to give law enforcement an excuse topaint a negative picture of bikers.

ACMC’s president Ray “Still Ray” Fitzgerald, said the object is to drawattention to the way the gang task force illegally forces bars to adoptthe no colors policy or face having their liquor licenses pulled.

One biker spoke of the Phoenix Police Department closing the gates of acemetery, keeping bikers from attending several memorials.

DPS officers also reportedly pulled over several Hells Angels travelingto the meeting Saturday morning on Interstate 40 about 18 miles east ofKingman and arrested Sonny Barger, one of the founders of the club.Barger, 72, was getting off his bike when he was arrested for goingseveral miles over the speed limit. Other Hells Angels were alsoticketed, according to a club member.

Balentine said ACMC’s mission statement is to educate the public of thepositive aspects of motorcycle clubs and lawfully oppose intrusion tobiker rights. He previously said he has had no problems wearing hiscolors in bars, restaurants, even casinos in the Bullhead City andMohave Valley area. Wearing his colors in the Laughlin casinos has alsonot been an issue, even after the infamous 2002 shooting between tworival motorcycle clubs during the Laughlin River Run.

Especially after the 2002 Laughlin shooting, Balentine said, there hasbeen unfair stereotyping that all bikers who wear colors are dangerousoutlaws looking to cause trouble. At the meeting were members from aChristian motorcycle club and one member of a club representingfirefighters and paramedics.

Siemens Smart Chopper’s Lights Point Forward, technologically, that is–Besides the electric propulsion provided by a Series Wound 8? motor from Advanced DC Motors, the clutchless one-speed drive system and the bodywork made partially from recycled materials, also another literally bright feature of the Smart Chopper deserves an extra look: The use of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting throughout the bike for head, tail and signal lighting.

Supplied by Osram Sylvania, the lighting array includes the first OEM installation of Osram Sylvania LEDs in a motorcycle head lighting application, a newly developed state-of-the-art headlamp cluster assembly and Osram Opto Semiconductors to provide high-powered LED chips. The Smart Chopper’s 4.5-inch custom headlamp design utilizes an Osram JFL2-based JOULE system, similar to those applications integrated earlier in Ford Mustang and Corvette concepts as well as Volkswagens 1-liter car. The JFL2 is the latest addition to a family of LED lighting solutions designed to offer the standardization of current automotive systems in a compact, energy-efficient package.

“The Siemens Smart Chopper embodies the next generation of lighting design for the cars and motorcycles of tomorrow,” said David Hulick, the company’s marketing director for the automotive LED systems division . “Osram Sylvania LED technology is the choice for this project because of its durability, energy efficiency and of course, its versatility. LEDs offer endless design opportunities for car and motorcycle makers while reducing energy consumption by 85 percent over conventional lighting applications.”

Along with the JFL2 JOULE system headlight, the Siemens Smart Chopper features: two Amber LED “MonoLED” one-inch dome front turn signals, two example lamps for use of “dome and tunnel” style design for the tail lamps (red stop and amber turn signal), two boards each with six Osram Opto Semiconductors Advanced Power topled in red and yellow for front and rear turn signals, and one LINEARlight Flex Top Colormix system for Red-Green-Blue (RGB) body lighting.

FEDS BREAK UP STOLEN MOTORCYCLE RING–Feds Break Up Stolen Motorcycle Ring Federal customs officers reportedly have foiled a motorcycle theft ring that stole bikes from Maryland and Virginia and smuggled them overseas.

Agents at the Port of Baltimore were alerted by Fairfax County, Va., police investigating an auto theft ring who said a shipping container bound for Bolivia might contain stolen motorcycles, according to a story in the Washington Examiner. The agents used a database to find a container still in the seaport that matched the description offered by the police in Virginia.

Federal agents pulled the container from the ship, opened it and found four salvage cars or sport utility vehicles. Salvage vehicles are vehicles usually purchased at auction for their parts value, says Scott McCabe, a reporter for the newspaper (www.washingtonexaminer.com ).

Inside the salvage cars were boxes containing disassembled motorcycles ? a 2009 Harley-Davidson Night Train and a 2007 Kawasaki ZX660J.

?This ring stole motorcycles, they?d take them apart. They?d leave the frame and motor part basically intact, but take off the tires and handlebars and but them in a box, wrap them in blankets and hide them in the salvage vehicles,? U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Steve Sapp told McCabe.

The federal agents went back to the database of shipping information to see whether there were similar manifests. ?The officers were really smart,? said Sapp. ?They found more stolen motorcycles.?But those containers were already out to sea and heading to Bolivia, Sapp said.

Customs officials ordered three containers to be redelivered to the Baltimore seaport. The last one arrived last Monday. Inside each container were two more motorcycles, disassembled and concealed inside the salvage vehicles.

Fairfax County police said they have arrested three members of the motorcycle ring.Baltimore is one of the nation?s busiest seaports for the import and export of new and used cars, trucks, boats, recreational vehicles and farm equipment, customs officials said.

Wheels Through Time Museum to Participate in Good Morning America NC Shoot– This coming Monday, November 9, 2009, the Wheels Through Time Museum will be participating in a special broadcast with Good Morning America, as the show’s co-host Bill Weir travels to the mountains of Western North Carolina to ride the famed “Tail of the Dragon” aboard the new incarnation of the Indian Motorcycle.

Good Morning America is an Emmy Award winning morning news and talk show produced live from Time Square in New York City by ABC. On the air since 1975, the Good Morning America has become among the top viewed shows in morning television, and features a variety of programming on news, weather, talk, and special-interest stories. Hosted by Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts, the two-hour show continues to bring its viewers the newest and most up-to-date information and news from around the globe.

The shows weekend anchor, Bill Weir will be on hand in Western North Carolina to highlight the revival of the Indian Motorcycle Company, one of the first motorcycle/automotive manufacturers in the country. Weir joined ABC news in 2004, and since has travelled the planet to uncover breaking news and global trends. He was among the first reporters on the scene during Hurricane Katrina, and was the lead reporter in ABC’s coverage of the war in Iraq. He’s also anchored numerous space shuttle launches since joining the network. In the U.S., Weir’s reporting usually focuses on innovative ways to solve many of America’s biggest problems.

Weir’s segment for good morning America will showcase the reincarnation of the new Indian Motorcycle Company. As America’s automotive and motorcycle industries continue to struggle and border economic failure, it comes as no surprise that Weir has chosen to cover the resurgence of such an iconic American manufacturer in an industry with such a loyal following.

As America’s first motorcycle company, Indian began producing motorcycles in 1901, and paved the way early on for many other American motorcycle manufacturers to flourish during the earliest part of the 20th century. Once our country’s largest motorcycle producer, the Indian motorcycle company became defunct shortly after World War II. Despite several attempts to revive the company over the next 50 years, the American public would have to wait until 2009 to rejoin the loyal following of the once iconic brand.

Indiansign

The new Indian Motorcycle Company, located in Kings Mountain, North Carolina is the brainchild of the company’s chairman Stephen Julius. After buying the company in 2004, Julius unleashed his plans to bring a high-quality, engineered Indian motorcycle back to the market. The company has poured millions into research and development of these new machines, and promises to provide the American public with a motorcycle that fits their needs.

Julius has a reputation for bringing once famous brands back to their former glory. Managing partner for the private equity firm, Stellican Limited, Julius has also resurrected such brands as the American “Chris-Craft” boats and the Italian yacht company, “Riva”. “Great brands, if you do the right things with them, if you manage to fulfill a promise to the brand by creating a beautiful product, then the brand equity will come flooding to the surface very, very quickly,” says Julius.

WHEELSTHROUGH TIME BANNER

Wheels Through Time will be participating in the broadcast in various capacities. Museum curator, Dale Walksler, will be on hand to provide expert commentary on American motorcycle history related to the Indian company, highlighting both the birth of the company, as well as Indian’s demise in the late 40s and early 50s. Walksler will also be aboard a genuine 1944 Indian Chief motorcycle, to ride the famed “Tail of the Dragon”, a stretch of U.S. highway 129 with 318 curves in 11 miles, with Weir. BED ROLL BAG LETS YOU DROP THE HAMMER & GO–We designed this storage roll to cover all the bases, cause I don?t like a lot on my bike. The bag itself is about 2 feet long and 6 inches in diameter. The ends have zipper pockets for incidentals.I usually put my lock, keys, matches and chapstick in one end and slip maps, tickets, receipts and acouple of bungie cords into the other one. The entire length of the bag unzips for packing ease and I found I could pack enough clothes for a long weekend. – Bandit

dragracing report

NOTE FROM BIKERNET UNIVERSITY, FLORIDA CAMPUS, STUDENT– I just read the news, which keeps me connected, while I endure university hell week here in South Florida.

I was most impressed with my celeb of choice, Jay Leno, the star of the recent Barrett-Jackson auction. His generosity always surpasses his quick wit and comedic timing. Raising that kind of money in these economic times for THE ARTS is to be applauded long and hard.

Jay is one of the few celebs I feel has the genuine spirit of our biker brotherhood sentiment in his talented life. And while there are a few others in the ranks, think Cher and Lamas, Jay?s been ?one of us? since the days when he slept in his car.

So, yes, I want my picture taken with Jay someday. When one helps a NYC community arts program or any ART PROGRAM by stepping up and into the charity arena, the kids win. Today, when the arts and music are taking huge hits, we need more of this awareness and action. As a soon-to-be art teacher in the United States public school system, I am pleased to know that art and music classes will endure, in my lifetime anyway. Art and music are the classes most kids WANT to take. If we can motivate them to LEARN, by showing we care and we are passionate about it, then we, as teachers are doing our jobs. And hopefully we, as a society, are in a better place down the road.

By benefiting Bailey’s Caf?, a community arts program that operates in Brooklyn, New York and was founded by Stefanie Siegel, a close friend of Jay?s, during their college days, makes us all winners in Vegas.

Ah ha, college days!

Cruztools

The CRUZTOOLS pro-quality tools you deserve at a friendly price–CruzTOOLS just introduced three Socket Bit Sets for home, shop, and pit use. Motorcycles make widespread use of set and cap screws that require hex (?Allen?) or Torx? wrenches. Sizes can range from 2.5mm to 3/8? for hex style, and T10 to T55 for Torx. Use of tools with loose tolerances or inferior materials can quickly result in damaged fasteners, so get the right tools.

The 10-piece Inch Hex Bit Set retails for $24.95; the 8-piece Metric Hex Bit Set is $22.95; and the 10-Piece Torx Bit Set is $29.95).

Quality is comparable to top professional tools, with polished chrome bodies and heat-treated chrome vanadium bits that exceed ANSI specifications. All sockets are 3/8? drive for compatibility with the most common ratchet and T-Driver sizes, and contain an easy-to-read reverse laser imprint of size for quick identification.

Like other CruzTOOLS products, hand tools are lifetime guaranteed, but more importantly, absolutely dependable when needed. ?Top professional sets are really nice, but prohibitively expensive.? stated Dan Parks, President of CruzTOOLS. ?Many consumer tool manufacturers combine both 1/4? and 3/8? within a single set, requiring the inconvenience of two different ratchets. Finally, the vast majority of low-cost socket sets don?t meet the quality standards riders expect and deserve. Our new sets provide high quality at an affordable price, and help keep your socket drawer organized.?

THAT’S A WRAP FOR THIS THURSDAY–While at the SEMA show in Vegas, Bikernet had meetings with Motorbooks, on a top secret book project, then a meeting with the boss of the Grand National Roadster Show regarding top secret negotiations, then we stumbled into a meeting with Senator Brueggaman of Montana, who recently broke his foot on the Ducati, Bikernet helped him repair.

Oldbonneville

He promised to help with our proposed SEMA motorcycle council. Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if he showed up at the Bikernet Headquarters with that busted Duck again. We met with the SEMA VP of councils and scheduled another meeting, after the show, at their headquarters in Irvine, California.

Just before I caught a flight out of Vegas, we had a meeting with a Senior VP from the Source (the guys who publish Hot Bike, Street Choppers and Toph’s Bagger mag) and the President of their internet efforts. They asked us lots of questions, which we refused to answer. We ate lunch, smiled and raced to the airport. I was so fuckin’ early they offered me earlier Jet Blue flight to Long Beach, but the plane was broke down. The electric starter failed, according to the pilot, but he promised to kick-start it and we were in the air in 20 minutes for the 45-minute flight to the coast.

I hate airports. I avoid flying like the plaque. Tomorrow, I swear on a stack of old Easyriders Magazines, I’m going to input all the corrections to the Chance book and that aspect will be completed and ready for the printer. Jon Towle is repairing the cover artwork, then George Fleming will add it to his cool layout and this bastard can be printed. Amazing.

I also met with Ken Conte, at the show and saw his Work Truck finished (see the recent tech on the home page). We will bring you a tech on Kirk Taylor’s bitchin’ paint work, with Dupont paints. I ran into Jon Kosmoski, from House of Kolors, and they have a new solvent based clear that’s better on the environment than the water-based shit. Ken promised the Sucker Punch Progressive bike shots for a Bikernet feature. I’ll bring you more Bikernet content reports in the Sunday Post. Gotta see that book off to the printer.

Bigtwin Show Netherlands takes additional hall for bike show–This year’s 18th annual Bigtwin Bikeshow & Expo (formerly ‘MotorSale’) will be staged at the Autotron venue at Rosmalen, Netherlands, on November 6th, 7th and 8th.

The event will again host Zodiac International’s popular Dealer Show, with the respected custom bike show being an AMD World Championship program Official Affiliate event for the fourth year.

Bigtwin Bikeshow competitors and winners, who traditionally come from all over Europe as well as the domestic Dutch market, have historically gone on to do well at European and World Championship events, regularly scoring top twenty finishes and higher.

This year sees the organizer (Bigtwin Magazine in the Netherlands) take the additional space offered by the second hall at the Autotron venue for the custom bike show, with the top prize again being a 5.000,00 Euro expenses contribution for the winner to compete at the 7th annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building, which will be staged at what will be the 70th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August 2010.

Zodiac Sales Manager Ruud Bakker told AMD that “with parts, accessory, performance component and service item sales remaining strong in Europe, especially compared to the domestic US market, and with Harley-Davidson themselves continuing to increase its share of the motorcycle market here in Europe, we are anticipating a good show in terms of vendor support and dealer attendance.

“There is a feeling in Europe that 2010 will be another good year when judged in the context of the motorcycle industry as a whole. With our inventory levels, brands and service quality we think Zodiac is well placed to offer its dealers and their customers outstanding customizing options again next year”.

THE WINNER OF THIS YEAR’S DARWIN AWARD,Now, (awarded, as always, posthumously)– The Arizona Highway Patrol came upon a pile of smoldering metal embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The wreckage resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it was a car. The type of car was unidentifiable at the scene.

Police investigators finally pieced together the mystery. An amateur rocket scientist had somehow gotten hold of a JATO unit (Jet Assisted Take Off, actually a solid fuel rocket) that is used to give heavy military transport planes an extra ‘push’ for taking off from short airfields. He had driven his Chevy Impala out into the desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to the car, jumped in, got up some speed and fired off the JATO!

The facts as best as could be determined are that the operator of the 1967 Impala hit the JATO ignition at a distance of approximately 3.0 miles from the crash site. This was established by the scorched and melted asphalt at that location. The JATO, if operating properly, would have reached maximum thrust within 5 seconds, causing the Chevy to reach speeds well in excess of 350 mph and continuing at full power for an additional 20-25 seconds.

The driver, and soon to be pilot, would have experienced G-forces usually reserved for dog fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners, causing him to become irrelevant for the remainder of the event. However, the automobile remained on the straight highway for about 2.5 miles (15-20 seconds) before the driver applied and completely melted the brakes, blowing the tires and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface, then becoming airborne for an additional 1.4 miles and impacting the cliff face at a height of 125 feet leaving a blackened crater 3 feet deep in the rock. Most of the driver’s remains were not recoverable. However, small fragments of bone, teeth and hair were extracted from the crater, and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel.

–Buckshot

Epilogue: It has been calculated that this moron attained a ground speed of approximately 420mph, though much of his voyage was not actually on the ground.

Defensive Riding Motorcycle — USMC Style– Talk about ‘road rage!’ Just what a motorcyclist needs for riding on I-35. Designed as an equalizer. Inconceivable and unpredictable lane changes and other traffic related anomalies perpetrated by tire losing, cell phone using SUV driving morons in Texas (and elsewhere) on the rest of us.

The below pictured machine was designed for that purpose. Each mini gun fires at a rate of 3000 rounds per minute (6000 total). During initial test and evaluation it was demonstrated that a single 2 second burst would and did blow a 40 foot RV with tow car clean off the road leaving an open and unobstructed route ahead. It will vaporize an SUV in seconds!

Tests further indicated that after two or three RV’s/SUV’s in a row were eliminated, or “friggin smoked”, others voluntarily pulled off the road and thus became a “non threat.”

BIRDS ATTACT BIKER IN LOWLANDS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA– Rolled over to a neighboring town for some groceries earlier and rode smack dab into a huge flock of crows gathered on the levee road. Freakiest thing I’ve ever seen…they were actually aggressive! They seemed pissed that I’d rounded a corner and upset their little pow wow. Had to slow down and kinda creep along to get them to fly away and a couple dive-bombed me. Once home I decided to try to read up on the birds and did you know that a flock of crows is actually called a “murder”? Yep, I flew into a murder of crows….is that creepy or what?

When we were moving into the house this spring a neighbor across the street and down a few houses had a dead crow, wing spread out, nailed to the front of his house, near the front door. I tripped on that for weeks, figuring it to be some kinda voodoo stuff. I’d forgotten all about it until I ran into the birds today.

Wonder if I should notify Stephen King? Could be a story in there for him…..Children of the Crows? The Birds, the Next Generation? Revenge of the River Ravens? Whatta ya think?

Sort of strange the way it came about as I have had the idea for some new ink for a while, with one of the elements being a camera, I never had even thought about an older camera, nor had I mentioned to either Mr. or Mizuz any of the elements involved in my idea.

Johnny had drawn up this tattoo over a year ago and while he is an excellent photographer in his own right, Johnny says he is a photographer of necessity, doing most of Mizuz Inkaholik’s shoots. He has a great eye for angles & composition, with the the Mizuz handling the editing side.

She does however occasionally work with other lucky photographers, like Billy Tinney and Curt Lout and now me! This was a double great day for me as I got to photograph Mizuz Inkaholik & got a excellent one of a kind tattoo as well!

ARC Audio Upgrade Kits for Harley at SEMA Show–Specialty car audio manufacture ARC Audio has teamed up earlier this year with the technicians from Mitchells Modesto Harley Davidson and created a series of single pack solutions to upgrade the factory audio systems on a variety of H-D motorcycles without compromising the factory electrical systems, wiring, or charging system that comes standard on the bikes.

The resulting MPAK lineup, currently on display at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, includes multiple factory friendly applications including a mini 2 channel class A/B amplifier that fits within the confines of the front fairing without the loss of any storage space. Keeping factory integration and function in mind, all MPAK kits allow to retain factory radio and handle bar controls with a seamless step by step installation process that requires no cutting or modifying of the main electrical harness or use of complicated interface modules, thereby retaining the factory warranty.

?As much as owning a motorcycle has become a lifestyle, for many people the roots of music go even deeper in sculpting their lives and who they are today? says CEO Demitrios Karabinis. ?Giving riders the ability to bring enhanced versions of both things together at an affordable price was the motivation behind these new additions to our product lineup.?

Starting at $399 plus installation costs, the MPAK kits offer the choice to upgrade the system with a drop and swap OEM fit kit (MPAK1) with 5.25? coaxial speakers, an advanced kit (MPAK2) with 5.25? component speakers, or the full upgrade (MPAK3 for Electra Glides) which includes 5.25? components for the front and 5.25? coaxials for the rear locations.

All MPAK kits and additional ARC Audio products are only available thru authorized brick and mortar store front retailers and participating Harley Davidson dealerships. DealofWeek

3 Ways to Prevent Bad Breath–Tip of the Day. If you have ever felt self-conscious about your breath but weren’t sure what to do, don’t just reach for the mouthwash. Halitosis is the odor caused by bacteria from decaying food particles or debris in the mouth and poor oral hygiene, and can’t be solved by simply chewing gum or using oral antiseptics. Some products, especially those that contain alcohol, can even make bad breath worse, in part because they have a drying effect. Try the following natural ways to help prevent or lessen halitosis:

1. Brush your tongue. The tongue, and especially the back of the tongue, is a warm harbor for bacteria. When you brush your teeth, spend some time on the tongue, moving slowly toward the back so as not to activate your gag reflex. A tongue scraper used twice a day can also be useful.
2. Keep your mouth hydrated. A dry mouth can lead to halitosis, so try snacking on oranges or celery, and drink plenty of water.
3. Freshen your mouth. Try an herbal palate cleanser such as parsley (chew on it after meals), peppermint tea, or cardamom seeds (chew, but don’t swallow). If your halitosis persists, contact your dentist. He or she may be able to prescribe an antimicrobial mouthwash and can diagnose any condition or concerns of the oral cavity that may be causing the problems, such as gum disease.

Angry bikers to converge on Kingman–They will protest businesses with ‘no colors’ policy.

KINGMAN – More than 1,500 motorcyclists from around Arizona are expectedto roll into Kingman this weekend.

The riders will be in town for the bimonthly meeting of the ArizonaConfederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ACMC). The riders also plan onstopping by several bars that have recently instituted a “no colors”policy.

The riders will be equipped with forms that will allow them to documentany incidents in which they are turned away because of what they arewearing, said ACMC Chairman Still Ray of Prescott.

Ray said members of the Arizona State Gang Task Force have beenthreatening to pull liquor licenses from bars and restaurants unlessthey institute a “no colors” policy.

“The problem is that the gang task force is using the state liquor boardas a weapon and that’s not right,” Ray said.Ray added that the riders aren’t out to cause a riot but rather exercisetheir right to lawful assembly.Bars and restaurants on the planned protest route include Mad Dog’s,Chuy’s, Cerbat Lanes and the Sportsman’s bar. When contacted, some saidthey were aware of Saturday’s activities.

Deborah Barry, owner of Mad Dog’s, said she instituted a “no colors”policy more than a month ago because of the surveillance being conductedby police in her parking lot. Because the bikers were being watched andphotographed, they were less likely to drink, which led to a drop inrevenue, and ultimately, the ban on colors, she said.Barry said she was never threatened to have her liquor license revokedif she didn’t ban colors.Ray said that riders are being tagged as criminals or gang membersbecause of their association with motorcycles.

“It’s a way of life,” he said. “I resent it when I am considered acriminal because I’m in a motorcycle club.”

Ray said up to 2,000 riders could roll into Kingman by Saturday. He saidhe was aware of a couple of groups of more than 400 riders coming fromPhoenix.

Ray said the riders have been invited to take part in the Veteran’s Dayparade in North Kingman Saturday morning. The parade will begin at 11a.m. at the corner of North Bond Street and Northern Avenue.

The ACMC meeting will be held at the American Legion Post on Oak Streetat noon.

LoneStar Harley-Davidson Special Edition–In case you thought your Harley themed Ford pickup was the baddest truck out there, think again: Chris Hawker just picked up his new International LoneStar Harley-Davidson Special Edition, so watch out!

Chris is not only a Harley enthusiast and rider, he is also a successful owner-operator truck driver, his garage being home to his black and silver 2003 Harley Davidson 100th Anniversary FXSTD Softail Deuce when he is on the road hauling food products between New York and Florida with his eighteen-wheeler. Last Friday Chris was presented with the keys to his new workplace in a ceremony recognizing him as a true ambassador of both the International truck and Harley-Davidson at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

?The International LoneStar Harley-Davidson Special Edition is one of the coolest-looking trucks I?ve ever seen,? said Chris. ?When I first caught wind of this truck, I knew I had to have one.? Design teams from International and Harley-Davidson collaborated to create a heavy-duty on-highway tractor with distinct design elements directly from Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

?Custom has always been an important word in Harley-Davidson?s brand language,? said Willie G. Davidson, senior vice president & chief styling officer, Harley-Davidson. ?We wanted the design impact of this new LoneStar Harley-Davidson to have a ?wow? factor equal to our motorcycles.?

?Knowing the passion that customers have for both brands, we?re proud to get this vehicle out in the hands of enthusiastic customers like Chris,? said Jim Hebe, Navistar senior vice president, North American sales operations. ?Combining the bold look of the International LoneStar with the attitude of Harley-Davidson delivers a winning product for our customers.?

Chris has so far logged more than two million accident-free miles driving trucks for more than 20 years. Good luck for the next two million miles, and don’t forget to ride that Softail.

FAMED BIKE BUILDER AND PERFORMANCE EXPERT, RON TROCK, PASSES ON UNEXPECTEDLY–Last Friday got a call from a friend of mine in Chicago. I was not ready for what he had to tell me. I had just gotten home from work.

He called to let me know that Ron Trock had passed away the day before. This really hit me hard. I had to sit down before I fell down.

I had just talked to Ron a couple of weeks ago. He seemed fine and to be feeling good. Over the last 3 years or so, he was really enjoying his retirement. All his business worries were gone. Ron and Karen were so happy just being outside and working their land. Green Acres all the way man.

Karen his wife told me that he could not wait to get up early in the morning and be outside. Cutting down trees and moving dirt around were his new tasks for a full day.

As I am writing this. The many memories of Ron keep coming back into my head. I have been very fortunate in my life to have known and worked with some best people in the M/C industry. Ron was one of them. They broke the mold after he was born. I will miss him. Rest in Peace my friend.

FBI Demands Tattoo Shops Rat On Customers– Are you in the market for a patriotic tattoo, maybe the Gadsden flag? Forget about it. Unless you want the local tattoo artist to inform on you.

The FBI, in league with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (part of the Department of Justice), has launched a program that harks back to East Germany?s Stasi.

In Philadelphia, the FBI has instructed tattoo shops to rat out their customers if they demand privacy, insist on paying with cash, engage in ?suspicious behavior,? make ?anti-US? comments, or request tattoos that are ?extremist symbols.?

According to the MIAC report , the Gadsden flag is a ?militia symbol.? The Department of Homeland Security?s Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment report characterizes militias as ?white supremacists,? domestic terrorists and a threat to the president. MIAC is part of the federal ?fusion? effort now underway around the country.

It is not merely ?extremist symbols.? In addition, the FBI literature instructs tattoo shops to be on the look-out for people who change hair color, style of dress, or shave beards between visits. Suspicious people also include those with missing fingers or hands, chemical burns, strange orders or bright colored stains on clothing.Read the handout below for more absurd ?extremist? indicators according to the FBI.

patti book cover

New book reveals a star of the burlesque era, Patti Waggin, with a unique view of her through fan letters and paper ephemera– Fan Letters to a Stripper: a Patti Waggin Tale: In the 1940s and 1950s, strip artist Patti Waggin was billed as The Educated Torso, The Sex Oomph Girl, and the Fresh Faced Girl Next Door. Amazingly athletic, performing routines few others could manage, Patti was a ?Headliner.? She was also one of the friendliest performers on the burlesque stage, loved by her peers and fans alike. In this unique book, readers come to know Patti Waggin through the letters of her fans. She was committed to recognizing and writing back to her ardent admirers because she understood their need for her during the difficult years of the Second World War.

The letters and an engaging text reveal her marriage in the 1950s to baseball player Don Rudolph. Over 280 photos of Patti on stage and at home, along with paper ephemera associated with her career, accompany the heartfelt letters included in the text. For anyone interested in burlesque, this book provides a unique look at one of its stars.

Bob Brill is an award-winning broadcast journalist. His passion for the Patti Waggin story stems improbably from opening his first pack of baseball cards in 1959.

Marisa_H-D_pic

Marisa Miller and H-D Thanking the Troops–Today, Marisa Miller and Harley-Davidson announced an expansion of their relationship for the Motor Company’s first ever Military Appreciation Month, a salute to active and retired U.S. military personnel during the month of November. Marisa will be featured alongside Harley-Davidson motorcycles in military-themed artwork, including print and digital advertising, posters, postcards and calendars. If this cute girl looks familiar to you, you are not mistaken: Besides modeling for Sports Illustrated and Victoria’s Secret, Marisa helped launch the Harley-Davidson VRSCF V-Rod Muscle in 2008.

“I’m honored to help the Motor Company salute the brave men and women who keep our country free,” said Miller. “My grandfather is a veteran, and I’ve had the unique opportunity to meet several service men and women during recent USO tours, so the military holds a special place in my heart. I hope other Americans will join me and Harley-Davidson in saluting these real life heroes during the month of November.”

“We’re excited to have Marisa’s support to help us during our first-ever Military Appreciation Month,” said Dino Bernacchi, Harley-Davidson’s director of Advertising and Promotions. “We’re certain she’ll be helpful in encouraging other Americans to join us in recognizing and thanking those who serve our country.”

The Military Appreciation Month campaign will include ads in service branch magazines and national publications, exclusive posters, postcards and calendars available at Harley dealerships nationwide, and much more. You can also check it out online at www.harley-davidson.com/thankyou.- – C.S. Berg

VETERAN’S DAY THOUGHTS FROM UNCLE MONKEY– Like most years I still have the plates on my bike even though the weather is sometimes less then favourable. Snow in October is not uncommon in my stretch of the woods. Most people have written off the riding season by now. Their bikes are safely tucked away in garages waiting for a new year. Some have started stripping their bikes down in an annual rebuild waiting to re-emerge from their cocoons in spring.

I always leave my plates on until after November 11, Veterans – Remembrance Day. It?s not to be hardcore, not to prove anything. It is because I made a pack when I first started riding to never forget the freedom that I enjoyed heading out on the open road of this great nation. It isn’t a freedom that came cheap. Thousands of young men and women made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. They gave their own lives so that we may have the freedoms that we so often take for granted.

We try to tell ourselves that we sacrifice the young and the poor for a nobler cause; that liberty and freedom is paid for in blood and souls. We pray for their safe return. We mourn for those that have fallen in battle. We promise not to forget those that have yet to find their way home.

War is never pretty. It isn’t chopper gun ships skimming over the ridgeline as Jimmy Hendrix whales about being alone in a watchtower. It isn?t friends laughing over cocktails back in ?The Swamp? while a war rages around them. It is fear and paranoia, bombs and bloodshed. It is never knowing if you will ever see home again, to feel the warm embrace of your loved ones, to ever lie eyes on the grandeur that is our nation. It is never knowing if death is around the corner, in the arms of a ?child? that you had been sent there to protect.

That is why I ride my bike on November 11, to honour those that have fought a battle I could not. I remember those that have fallen on foreign soil. Their blood spilled so that mine would not. I remember the POW/MIA?s, those that fought but have not come home; swallowed and held captive in far away lands. I remember the empty shells that have come back, their innocents that was slaughtered on the battleground. I honour those that fight for which I will not. I honour them because I’m not worthy of their sacrifice.

BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS BRINGS YOU STEVE MCQUEENS INDIANS, CHRISTMAS SPECIALS FROM ZIPPERS, VICTORY MILITARY INCENTIVES, CYCLE SOURCE YEAR IN REVIEW – CAST YOUR VOTE, CYCLE SOURCE INDIAN LARRY SPECIAL AND MORE…

Leadgirls

Hey,

This news is a wild compilation. You name it, we’ve got it, from TV news to No Colors policies. I just returned from a whirlwind trip to Las Vegas for the SEMA show. Vendors were reportedly down 20 percent, but the crowds were on hand and excited. SEMA is the second largest convention annually in Vegas. It represents the automotive aftermarket, from hot rods, to metric tuners, to tools, custom paint displays, and major manufacturers. The show is open to dealers, shops, builders, painters and the public. I could spend all day long in the building set aside for only tool manufacturers.

This year they kicked off a special section for bikes, but builders and custom bikes were scattered throughout. “If they don’t have a babe in a booth, they use a custom bike to draw attention,” a brother told me once. Anyway, I survived several meetings, but let’s hit the news, and then I’ll report:

Harley-Davidson and Buell to roll into Italy, EICMA–BUELL AIN’T DEAD YET!–Harley-Davidson and Buell are getting ready for the EICMA in Milan, Italy, one of the largest motorcycle exhibitions worldwide, which will open it’s gates to trade and media visitors on November 10, to the general public two days later on November 12. Yes, you read it right: Buell will be part of the Motor Company’s display as well ? and we have that from the highest authority, Harley-Davidson Italy themselves. Despite the shock of the production stop a short while ago, Buell appears to be by far not dead and buried. While continued display of Buell motorcycles may be just an effort to help dealers sell the bikes they still have in stock, it would be only appropriate if an opportunity would arise for Eric Buell and his team to continue the amazing work they have done.

EICMA_pic_HD_DynaWideGlide

Harley-Davidson will be presenting their full European model lineup of motorcycles, including the Dyna Wide Glide, Ultra Limited and Fat Boy Special in Italy, while Buell will be represented with the XB12SX and the new City X.

And should any of you ladies happen to be in the area, here is some good news for you from the organizers of EICMA: They would like to invite all the ladies to visit the show free of charge on ? here’s the catch ? Friday, November 13.

One more thing: The bikes shown in these pictures are the European models, so don’t go running to your H-D dealer complaining that your’s has a different bolt somewhere.

Now, to mark this five year anniversary, Indian Larry Motorcycles and Cycle Source Magazine have joined forces to release a commemorative issue in his honor.

Incredible Content: Inside we?ll take a look at some of Larry?s most notable builds with commentary from friends who share what that time in his life was like. York Harley non-core outsourcing would affect hundreds of jobs–Even if Harley-Davidson decides to keep its local vehicle assembly operations in York County, the company would likely cut hundreds of workers in addition to cuts already made this year.

Noncore production, including some sub-assembly, chrome-plating and stamping of parts, would be outsourced to Harley suppliers under a plan the company told workers about Wednesday.

The moves would reduce the number of workers at the York operations regardless of whether the company decides to keep any of its operations in York County.

Harley-Davidson spokeswoman Pat Sweeney said Wednesday the company has settled on a restructuring plan that would include vehicle assembly, metal fabrication and painting of Harley motorcycles in York. But the company found that a plan to also keep non-core production as part of the Springettsbury Township plants lacked the needed savings.

All that is contingent on Harley deciding to keep operations in York County at all. Sweeney said the company is still on schedule to make a decision to stay or go some time in December. The preferred option remains staying in York, she said.

Sweeney did not say exactly how many positions could be cut by outsourcing non-core operations.

But Tom Santone, directing business representative for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 98, said the decision would displace workers numbering into the hundreds.

Santone said, when contacted early Wednesday afternoon, that he did not have an exact number. Efforts to reach him later in the day were unsuccessful. IAM Local 175 represents employees at the facilities in York County.

A study has been under way since May to examine whether Harley should move the operations elsewhere to save costs. Such a move would mean about 2,000 manufacturing employees would lose their jobs here.

The union is also negotiating a new contract ahead of a scheduled Dec. 2 contract vote. The contract, which is being negotiated early, is also a step toward helping Harley stay in York County.

Santone said the union had hoped to save non-core production work and keep it local. He said the union worked for months to try to make it happen.

In addition to examining the best way to restructure York, Harley is also examining alternative locations in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Shelbyville, Ind. and Shelbyville, Ky. Sweeney said Wednesday that outsourcing of non-core operations would be occurring even if the company decides to move core operations to any of those sites.

Bob Jensenius, executive vice president of the York County Chamber of Commerce, said the outsourcing plan is not surprising. He said when companies talk about efficiency, it often indicates a company plans to cut its business down into its core components.

“That is more common these days,” Jensenius said.

Boiling business down has already been evident this year in several Harley moves, most notably with a decision to jettison the Buell and MV Agusta brands from the company to concentrate on the Harley-Davidson brand.

The job cuts would come as a blow to the local economy, but the impact could depend on which suppliers Harley decides to outsource to and where they are.

Jensenius said that if those suppliers are in the local region, they might be able to absorb some of the workers Harley would let go. From a transportation standpoint, it might make sense for Harley to outsource to companies nearby, he said.

Sweeney said that Harley has not designated any firms to outsource work to yet, but said the company would look to outsource the work mostly domestically in its existing supplier network, including some suppliers in Pennsylvania.

Sen. Bob Casey released a statement about the outsourcing plans Wednesday evening, saying he was disappointed part of what is now done at Harley’s Springettsbury Township site would go elsewhere.

He continues to urge Harley to keep core operations in York County.

Shrinking workforce

Before the now long-running flurry of job reductions began at the facilities in York County, about 3,000 people reportedly worked at Harley’s York County operations.

The local union this summer put production workers at around 2,150, not including nonproduction positions.

That number was further reduced by a previously announced layoff of around 71 workers earlier this fall.

Many nonproduction workers also work at the site, although those ranks have also been hit by reductions

Steve McQueen Indians at Bonhams Auction Los Angeles, November 14–Several Indian Motorcycles previously owned by legendary actor and motorcyclist Steve McQueen will be up for auction at the Bonham’s auction at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles November 14.

Even though Steve McQueen is most often identified with the Mustang fastback from the movie Bullitt, or the blue-and-orange Porsche 917 he raced in the movie Le Mans, the first motorized vehicle he owned was in fact an Indian motorcycle. After his time in the military, he moved to New York in the early 1950s, where he started acting. His old Indian had a sidecar attached, and with it he terrorized the streets of Greenwich Village. ?McQueen was a good sports car driver, but an even better motorcycle racer,? said legendary motorcycle and off-road racing pioneer, Bud Ekins.

In the 1960s and ’70s, McQueen preferred Triumphs, and later Husqvarnas, for racing but his street ride of choice was most often an Indian. Of the 150-or-so motorcycles he owned throughout his life, it is likely that several dozen of them were Indians.

On auction on November 14 at the Petersen Museum are Steve McQueen’s 1940 Indian 74ci Chief and his 1919 Indian Daytona Twin Racer with FLXI Sidecar, along with numerous other exclusive rarities on two and four wheels. Check it out at www.bonhams.com.

Monster Garage Editorial By Kat

monster garage logo

Monster Garage and its iconic smart ass white boy host, Jesse James, surprised even the crustiest of old school boys and girls with their 50th episode. Dedicated to “his roots” the show remained entertaining because of tribute and great building ideas. Jesse has risen to his garage space age status from his own ingenuity, the kindness of his elders and from those that blazed the promotional motorcycle trail.

Bringing together such infamous figures within the motorcycle industry and then riding off alone, fits both the show's advertising sentimentality and part of our world this tormented yet talented young man deems to lives in.

We met more masters of the trades. Touting the show as a “Special Builds” segment, the world of metal burns meets history, honesty and the older home boys. The builders here are all over 50. Each has seen the world change rapidly, gone through too many wars and brought up a family, maybe two. They were presented with a modern day Heritage Softail, resplendent in its stock state and after a day of design ideas tossed around the machine shop's loft, the consensus was to create a bar hopper, a performance based bar hopper. Or more often heard as, “The guy who rides this bike looks like he would kick your ass,” Said Jesse. How original.

MG jesse n carl

What was refreshing was the sparkle of metal magic and mechanic mischief that remains in these gentlemen's eyes. When port and polished barrels came back from the West Coast Choppers' actual shop for re-assembly, “Engine jewelry,” Carl Morrow called it. Related we did. The bike began to take shape after the scrap parts pile grew, each part removed patiently and place on the hard concrete floor. These guys didn't just throw parts around as many commercially correct shows might suggest. There was a time, long, long ago, when all parts were used over and over again to create a difference. These men lived those conservatory years and simply put, “Parts is parts.” If you didn't catch the slightest slow intentional movements, then a lot of the show was lost on you. Maybe they are moving slowly, they are older and oh, yeah, wiser. It's called methodical.

They dismissed the “watermelon” shape of Jesse's first rendition of fuel tank, showing their combined age and eye contact agreement. These are classic biker men, and a round Emu egg-shaped gas tank looked goofy.

Commentator remarks like “He (Jesse) loves to piss people off and then prove them wrong.” was keeping with the myth…

surrounding the man who seemed truly deferential to have these elder craftsman in his shop. Ok, so he did refab the tank's shape and produced another nice piece of copper encasing. We still relate to the old ways of taking a part from the pile and using that. We didn't have a copper, read “gold” mine in the back yard.

MG full left indoors final

The chopper came together with divine design choices and a tantalizing butterfly effect. That carburetor shot was not long enough to see! We agree that it is hard to come up with something different these days so returning to our roots made for perfect grace. It was interesting to learn about the evolution of custom parts into the CCI stock we see plastered on bike shop walls and a girlfriend's bike.

Artist and metal sculptor John Reed and his outrageously in style tattoos, showed us who thought up that black flame collection and how he became a hidden treasure. Distraction was the Metal Militia and the dirt bike antics of commercial television. Child's play can be appreciated but in the proper place. This was not the place to show off what we used to do over the bonfires. And our hackles came up when it was enunciated that “the journalist” was actually drilling pee holes for the electrical wires. That journalist is none other than Keith “Bandit” Ball, of biker literature fame, hard work, and editorial glory. Keith's presence here proved that you can do many things in life and excel in all that you do. Often, in this hour broadcast, it was noted that Keith's nod of approval meant something to all concerned. And his name came up first on the lists in the credits. Jesse considers him the “gatekeeper of the motorcycle industry” as do many of us that are writing here today. Keith's demeanor and presence at this “Special Build” remained strong, silent, a mindful mediator and always considerate. It looked like he did most of the actual assembly mock up work as well.

MG full right outdoors final

Sexy outlaw seniors are quite okay with us! We weren't privy to seeing the bike side to side, fore and aft, once it was finalized and painted. Those copper legs, with old style rubber boots were yesterday cool (did they take the fenders tabs off?) and the basic blackness of the iron horse brought out the outlaw in all of us.

What has turned mainstream, thanks to the Discovery Channel and H-D for twenty recent years of making ride-able bikes, for many of us remains a way of life. It's all about the bikes, their beauty, an imagination and the wind in your face.

Jesse James, humbled and real, gave credit where credit was due.

He got exposure in the magazines, free bench time, parts at cost or free from people who saw something worthy in him. Then he got game.

Now he can bring a few of these generous and insightful men folks together and give them payback tool time. There was no challenge here. We knew that scoot would be up and running ahead of schedule and double the trouble of horsepower.

We have the faith. We are the following.

400hp Supercharged IS C to SEMA NEXT WEEK IN VEGAS–Fox Marketing is back for the 2009 SEMA Show, following up last years twin turbo IS F with a supercharged 2010 Lexus IS350C. While Lexus’ hard-top cabrio may be an odd choice for a performance makeover, you can’t deny the equipment Fox used to create the BASF Foxy Green, 405 horsepower drop-top.

A ProCharger C2 blower huffs five PSI into the stock 3.5-liter V6, with a Yonaka intercooler keeping the charge in check while spent hydrocarbons are shuttled out an F-Sport exhaust. Lexus’ internal tuning division was tapped to supply the stoppers, with 14-inch discs clamped by six-piston caliper in front. iForged wheels, sized 20×9 inches in front and 20×11.5 inches in the rear, are wrapped in Toyo T1Rs and dropped over a set of Yonaka SPECII 36-way adjustable coilovers.

Since this is a Fox creation, the exterior mods are both extensive and custom, with a bespoke front lip, side skirts, grilles, badges and a two-inch fender flare.

Police said the chair was powered by a converted lawnmower and had a stereo and cup holders.Sixth Judicial District Judge Heather Sweetland stayed 180 days of jail time Monday and ordered two years of probation for Anderson.

FULL THROTTLE Saloon to debut on truTV November 10–Here we go with yet another reality TV-show circling around bikes and bikers: truTV heads to the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, in a new series called ?Full Throttle Saloon?. The show, which takes viewers behind the scenes at Michael Ballard’s legendary biker watering hole, is set to premiere Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 10 pm Eastern Time.

Sounds interesting and well deserved for Michael and his team, who are busting their chops during the two weeks of the Rally to make a year’s worth of revenue. On the other hand the fact that the official press release lists ?biker gangs? along with ?recession [?] weather, the egos of some of the country’s biggest musical acts, and local law enforcement? as ?unpredictable factors? PYO-30in_Wheel

LOOK OUT! Paul Yaffe 30-INCH Wheel–This is going to be the next big thing in custom motorcycle wheels, literally: Paul Yaffe has a brand new 30-in. front wheel in the works, along with the tires to match the gigantic rim. Yes, you read it correctly: thirty inches, that is three-zero.

When we first saw the mockup wheel sitting in his office, we thought to be looking at the latest in Fred Flintstone technology or a rough piece for a new cafe table. Hard to believe a wooden disc this size represents an actual wheel.

Paul tells us that the wheel is already well in the works and the tires are also being crafted right now. It will although be a couple of weeks since anyone will be able to lay eyes on the actual assembly. Stay tuned.

CANNONBALL RALLY BUILD UNDERWAY–Here are some neat pics of my Sears Motorcycle project. The back of the fork legs were cracked, but I got them all welded up. The frame weighs 25 pounds, and the fork weighs 15. I am not sure what I got myself into with this whole cannonball run, riding across the country on a 100-year- old bike sounds kind of crazy.

I know that it will be an amazing experience and I am happy to be a part of it. The parts are in amazing shape for being this old.

FLORIDA’S VERTICAL TAG LAW UPDATE–A few months ago, I was sitting in my office when my cell rang. It was an associate calling from out of state with a magazine publisher on the line. The publisher asked “Hey, what ever happened to last year?s (2008) Florida HB 137, you know, that Ver-tical Tag law?” I gave him the Cliff Notes version, and continued with my work.

About two weeks ago, I was chatting with Scribe, ABATE of Florida, Inc.?s Legislative Trustee, when he told me a friend of his had just been pulled over in Naples for riding his bike that had its license plate mounted vertically. The biker had to have his bike towed and now has to appear in court.

I keep hearing about people calling their friends down here in the Sunshine State asking the same questions; “Can I ride in Florida with my chopper and its vertical tag?, If I can?t then I?m not coming to Bike Week!” With all these stories in mind, lets take a few minutes and break down what the final result is from the 2008-2009 Florida Legislative Session?s HB 137.

This bill was introduced by Republican Representative Carlos Lopez-Cantera of Miami during last year?s FL Legislative Ses-sion. Representative Lopez-Cantera?s original bill would inflict specific penalties on motorcycle riders, specifically sport bike riders, including a third time offender of reckless driving or speeding in excess of 30 MPH above the posted speed limit, would suspended the rider?s license for TEN YEARS and require the person to FORFEIT THEIR MOTORCYCLE. In addition, this bill ONLY APPLIED TO MOTORCYCLES. I know some don?t like the way bikers look, but this would be legally endorsed discrimi-nation! ALL MOTOR VEHICLES. nd offense of the new State Statute 316.2085 (what HB 137 became) of $2,648 for not having a horizontally mounted tag! Over TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!

YES, YOU CAN RIDE IN FLORIDA WITH A VERTICAL TAG ONCE AGAIN!

After looking deeper into the language of this bill, it included many penalties for different things, including having a tag (license plate) affixed to a motorcycle in any manner other than perfectly horizontal. ABATE of Florida Inc?s Delegation gave marching orders to its President & Lobbyist, James “Doc” Reichenbach, who proceeded to fight vigorously against this bill at the State Capitol. Many of ABATE of Florida, Inc?s almost 8,000 members notified their legislators explaining the obvious discrimination against motorcycle riders as well as the blatant potential government intrusion against individuals? right to own a vehicle.

After all was said and done, ABATE of Florida, Inc., although not happy with the bill at all, ended up getting it modified to apply-ing only after 50 MPH over the posted speed limit is reached, no vehicle forfeiture at all, and it now applies to

What about the vertical/horizontal tag portion you ask? Well, we were told that it was supposed to have been taken care of. HOWEVER, in January 2009, ABATE of Florida, Inc. began hearing that local Sheriff?s Offices were going to levy a fine for a 2

Not to worry. Doc Reichenbach made some phone calls and the committees that approved the bill admitted that the final lan-guage as it applies to motor vehicle tags was not what they intended. In the end, on June 19, 2009, Florida Governor Crist signed the amended bill into law, removing the “horizontal” portion.

BIKERNET PHILOSOPHY LESSON, THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER–This one is a little different….Two Different Versions! Two Different Morals!Thought you might find this interesting – a quick read.

OLD VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself .

MODERN VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and, everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green.’

Acorn stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations’ film the group singing, ‘We shall overcome.’ Rev. Jeremiah Wright then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper’s sake.

Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant’s old house, crumbles around him because he doesn’t maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be careful how you vote in 2010. ..

Newly Formed Safety Council to Take Safety Commitment to Next Level– Secretary Ray LaHood today convened the first meeting of a newly created U.S. Department of Transportation Safety Council formed to tackle critical transportation safety issues facing the department?s 10 operating administrations.

?Now is the time to identify and address the top safety issues that cut across our agencies,? said Secretary LaHood. ?The Council will take our commitment to safety, which is our highest priority, to the next level.?

Before taking office, Secretary LaHood saw that many important safety initiatives were being pursued in the department?s agencies without a formal process for sharing data, best practices and strategies. Secretary LaHood created the Safety Council to serve that broad-based safety leadership role and help break down organizational stovepipes, enabling an even stronger safety culture.

The goals of the Safety Council are to further enhance the safety focus throughout all agencies of the department and improve the impact of the department?s safety programs.

The Council, chaired by Transportation Deputy Secretary John Porcari, is comprised of the heads of the Department?s 10 agencies: the Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, the Maritime Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, the Research and Innovative Technology Administration and the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

Deputy Secretary Porcari said the Council will be action oriented, data driven, emphasize open dialogue about common issues and provide a forum for fresh ideas and new perspectives.

?The Council will enhance the department?s safety culture which should then resonate out into industry,? said Deputy Secretary Porcari.
