Behind The Scenes With VT Racing

Val3

Hold on to your handlebars everyone because this update is loaded with exciting news. First, you should know this was my first drag racing event as team manager and I could not have been more excited. I realize I have a lot to learn in my new position and will rely on my experiences from other industries and help from experts around me to line this team up for its first championship season. This update starts with Valerie’s return trip from Gainesville to her hometown for Arizona Bike Week and finally the AHDRA Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Arizona Bike Week Nationals. I will also share with you a wonderful new sponsor and introduce a few special fans.

As you may recall Gainesville was good for qualifying but left the team with a broken motor before Sunday’s eliminations. After which, Valerie was left waiting in Winston-Salem, NC while her new motor was being installed at Eagle Harley-Davidson of Lafayette, IN. She drove almost 200 miles through snow and ice to get her bike back and then turned for home. Special thanks go out to Dan Bell owner of Eagle Harley-Davidson and his team and Bike-Sponsor Rick Hatch owner of Hacienda Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale for expediting the repairs with urgency.

Val4

Upon returning home it was back to work for what would become 10 busy days for Valerie. She was in meeting after meeting with sponsors and event planners for her many appearances scheduled throughout Arizona Bike Week.

Val53

If you have never been to Arizona Bike Week, you are missing a huge 10-day event. Every year it attracts bikers from all over the world and every year the place to go for Arizona Bike Week is the Hacienda Harley-Davidson Kick Off Party on Friday night. Familiar to everyone as the party that only Rick could throw. It’s where to go for the best party in town including live bands, vendors, bikers galore and the search for GoDaddy.com’s next GoDaddy Girl.

Val40

Saturday began with the Coulter Foundation Biker Rally named after the son of Rick Hatch who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. The proceeds raised through the generosity of hundreds of riders will be put to good use at the new Coulter Foundation Youth Center. The rally ended at Speed World for head-to-head run-what-you-brung racing for all who came and were willing to back up their street talk. Some awesome racing went on there, all had fun, and most importantly, it was for a noble cause and salute to a fallen rider.

Val63

Later that night Valerie and her crew were at the Dirty Dogg Saloon for its “Big Bike Week Party”. There she signed autographs, saw some familiar faces and met many new fans. The highlight of the night was when Valerie, with help from Rick Greene of the AHDRA who was there promoting the upcoming Arizona Nationals, did an awesome smokey-burnout in front of everyone on the Dirty Dogg’s front porch.

The following day was Sunday and was not a day of rest. Much shopping for our Bikernet World Land Speed Record girl and catching up on home stuff before the day ended and only after completely unloading the trailer. This, the crew promised was to be a simple task, but cleaning every nook and cranny took Valerie’s crew into the wee hours of the morning to finish. A well-rested Valerie said to her crew, “looking good helps me go faster.” I cannot see an increase in horsepower in her theory but if feeling pretty helps her reaction time and hitting her shift points, I won’t argue.

Val32

Wednesday, we were off to West World for more autographs, photos and a great outdoor party and concert that featured headliner and legendary rock band 38 Special.

The next day was Thursday and all about racing, and the aura would stay high on racing until the last race at Arizona Nationals on Sunday. It began at Speed World in Surprise, AZ for some much-needed test and tune of the new engine. With help from Larry Edmondson and Elvis from Eagle Harley-Davidson, VTR (Valerie Thompson Racing) crew chief Mickey Eddinger was able to make significant progress dialing in the bike in preparation for the weekend’s big event.

Val69

As always, Valerie was excited and decided to go straight to Firebird Raceway a day early. There she and her crew stayed the night to get an early start on another days test and tune. This is her hometown and she could have stayed in her own bed, but the racer inside her sleeps better at the track.

Valerie Thompson Racing had terrific location in vendor’s row and was the pit where everyone was seen hanging out. Next to us was team Product-Sponsor MAC Tools and Independent Distributors, Greg Burcar and John Ozenich who were on hand and brought Valerie the elusive “John Force Screwdriver Set” she had been longing for. The generator provided by Alfred Franklin, Account Manager of “Cummins Rocky Mountain LLC” kept things quite and full of electricity all weekend.

Val and
Here’s Val and Bandit on the salt last year. This year will be wild. Watch for the reports on Bikernet.

Saturday was a long day of qualifying. After several competitors served hot-oil-alamode to the track, the days racing ended about 9:30pm where VTR finished in the sixth qualifying position in an extremely tight group of 24 racers.

Sunday was another great day for racing and the weather had everyone feeling good. Valerie’s competition was fast and so was her GoDaddy.com/ Hacienda Harley-Davidson V-Rod Destroyer heading into the day’s semi-finals. The pit was full of fans like Travis Scott who came from Colorado, Marcus and Tracy Pierre from Las Vegas, the crew from Washington, Dave from MTC Engineering, and new Associate Sponsor Mr. Eldon Heppner President and CEO of The Real Security Company all the way from Canada. The fans and Eldon all pitched in and were rewarded through out the weekend with Team shirts, a Catered dinner and breakfast prepared by Brandon Borbeck of the Scottsdale Culinary School who decided to stay around and help Associate-Sponsor Norm Gilbert President of Screamin’ Eagle Designs, grill a fabulous steak barbeque for 20 people. The team was a strong contender but having just finished a run in the Super-Glass class, the warm motor was too much for VT who did all she could to get a win light from the rested number one qualifier and eventual overall winner L.E. Tonglet.

Val2

The past two weeks were incredible and I thank everyone for their help during all the events. Thanks to all the parents who brought their kids to see Valerie, it means so much to her. To all our sponsors and Valerie’s fans, were off to St. Louis. Valerie is already packed and looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Always remember, racing is for the track.

MOTORCYCLE BUYERS ARE HAPPIER THAN EVER

Motorcycle manufacturers are trying harder than ever to please customers, and the result is higher quality bikes and happier owners.

Overall satisfaction with the motorcycle ownership experience has increased for a seventh consecutive year to a record-high level, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Motorcycle Competitive Information Study, and each of the study’s five criteria — product, quality, cost of ownership, sales, and service — have improved, with sales and service showing the biggest improvements.

“The result of increased competition is that the quality and performance of bikes is at an all-time high,” Power?s Todd Markusic explains, “and dealers are paying much more attention to their customers’ sales and service experiences.”

First-time buyers comprise 22% of all new motorcycle purchases, and with the average age of owners increasing from 40 to 47 since 2001, it is important for manufacturers to focus on younger Gen X and Y demographics to ensure continued growth in the market.

Now in its 12th year, the annual survey measures owner satisfaction with new motorcycles and fielded responses from nearly 8,000 owners between August and October 2009, focusing on 2009 model year bikes.

MISSOURI TO END SAFETY INSPECTIONS ON NEWER VEHICLES

New-ish car and bike owners can take that $10-12 you?ve been setting aside to pay for a state safety inspection and go buy something nice for yourself or your vehicle. Under legislation that took effect on New Year?s Day in Missouri, vehicles five years old and newer will no longer need an inspection when renewing license plates.

That means in 2010, 2005 model year and newer autos, including cars, trucks and motorcycles, will be exempt. Models from 2006 won?t need their first inspection until 2012. Previously, vehicles are exempt from safety inspections for their model year and the year after that.

Inspections are performed at thousands of repair shops across the state and cost $12 for cars and trucks and $10 for motorcycles. The Missouri Department of Revenue, which manages vehicle registration, estimates that 650,000 vehicles will be affected by the exemption.

INDIANA HARLEY DEALER FIGHTS SUNDAY BIKE SALES BAN

There are some things you can?t buy on Sundays in Indiana: alcohol, cars, and motorcycles.

One Hoosier Harley-Davidson dealer thinks this ?blue law? against buying motorcycles is ridiculous, and he’s teaming up with an Indiana state senator to change it. Mark Forszt owns four Harley dealerships throughout the state and says the law is hurting his business, and that it makes no sense. On Sundays, he’s open for business, and he can sell you everything you’d ever need to put a bike together yourself. He just can’t actually sell you the bike.

?It’s a huge loss to the state in terms of sales tax revenue,? said Forszt, who contacted state Senator Ed Charbonneau to address the problem in the legislature, framing the issue as a way to help small business. When you add up all the sales tax, it?s also a way to help the state of Indiana, home to some 300 motorcycle dealerships, said Charbonneau. ?If every one of those dealerships sold one motorcycle a Sunday, or even one a month, that’s a pretty sizable infusion of cash into the state coffers,? Senator Charbonneau told local NBC-affiliate WNDU.

The bill to change the law has been drafted and filed, but until something changes, the Sunday choices in this store will be limited. What dealers like Forszt complain about is you could sell a bike through a newspaper, CraigsList, or eBay on Sunday, but in a store it’s illegal. It is currently a class D misdemeanor to sell a motorcycle on Sunday.

WISCONSIN BILLS WOULD HONOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON

A bill has been introduced in the Wisconsin state legislature to create a special license plate commemorating Harley-Davidson, the iconic Milwaukee motorcycle manufacturer.

The legislation would authorize the creation of an automobile license plate available for purchase that would include Harley-Davidson?s trademark bar and shield logo and the message ?Share the Road.?

Available for cars and trucks registered in Wisconsin, the revenue collected by the Department of Transportation from the specialty plate sales would be used for conducting public workshops on motorcycle safety; evaluating basic rider education courses; creating transportation messages at motorcycle rallies; providing funds for motorcycle-related safety and training programs; and grants to providers of motorcycle safety training courses.

?Motorcycling is a huge part of Wisconsin?s culture and plays a big role in our state?s economy,? state Rep. Jim Sullivan told The Business Journal of Milwaukee upon introducing the measure. ?This license plate helps us protect that heritage and promote sharing the road safely with all drivers.?

The goal is to have the plate ready by May 2010, which is motorcycle safety month in most states.

Wisconsin lawmakers are also currently considering legislation declaring Harley-Davidson the state?s official motorcycle, similar to recognizing a state bird or flower.

PROPOSED LEGISLATION TO LET MICHIGAN RIDERS BUY PERMITS TO RIDE HELMETLESS

Motorcyclists in Michigan would be able to buy a permit to ride without a helmet if a newly-introduced bill becomes law.

It would apply to riders who are 21 years or older, have been licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least two years or completed a safety class, and have at least $20,000 in health insurance. The $100-a-year permit would make helmets optional. Any passenger over 21 years riding with a permit holder wouldn’t need a helmet.

State Representative Richard LeBlanc (D-Westland) said wearing a helmet should be a personal choice. LeBlanc told Capitol News Service of the Macomb Daily newspaper that he’s been involved with the issue since the 1970s when he started riding a motorcycle, adding that he introduced the bill because he believes that wearing a helmet should be a personal choice.

The bill is pending in the House Committee on Regulatory Reform, though ABATE of Michigan reportedly does not support the legislation and is dedicated to working with their new governor to repeal the existing helmet law with no fees, additional insurance or stickers.

Michigan riders, spearheaded by ABATE and the Confederation of Clubs of Michigan, succeeded in passing helmet repeal legislation twice since 2006 only to have both bills vetoed by outgoing Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

MILLIONS IN INSURANCE OVERCHARGES DUE TO MASSACHUSETTS MOTORCYCLISTS

Massachusetts insurance companies have overcharged consumers on premiums by overstating and failing to depreciate motorcycle values.

Attorney General Martha Coakley?s Office entered into settlements with several insurance companies resolving allegations that they overcharged consumers for motorcycle insurance by using incorrect motorcycle values to calculate premiums. The settlements, which return $11.1 million to consumers, stem from an investigation spurred by consumer complaints and ongoing lobbying efforts by the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA).

Investigators found that insurers were not adjusting motorcycle values for their steady depreciation over time and instead were using the same value for a bike for several consecutive years to gauge premium levels.

?The settlements cover alleged overcharges going back to 2002 and require the insurers to pay 6 percent interest to consumers on the alleged overcharges,? reports the MMA in a prepared statement. ?Average refunds to consumers are anticipated to be approximately $300 with some consumers receiving thousands of dollars. Tens of thousands of policies are believed to have been affected.?

Motorcyclists praised the settlements, but warned that a number of other insurance companies also evaluated motorcycles incorrectly.

Betsy Lister, a politically-active insurance agent who rides a motorcycle, told the Enterprise News that motorcyclists have repeatedly raised this issue with the state Division of Insurance and the attorney general?s office. ?They?ve been doing it going back to the early 2000s,? Lister said of the insurers? overcharges. ?This is something we?ve been fighting for years.?

EUROPE SLAPPING RICH DRIVERS WITH MASSIVE TRAFFIC FINES

European countries are increasingly pegging speeding fines to income as a way to punish wealthy scofflaws who would otherwise ignore tickets. Advocates say a $290,000 (euro 203,180.83) speeding ticket slapped on a millionaire Ferrari driver in Switzerland was a fair and well-deserved example of the trend.

Germany, France, Austria and the Nordic countries also issue punishments based on a person’s wealth. In Germany the maximum fine can be as much as $16 million compared to only $1 million in Switzerland. A Frenchman was fined 70,000 francs after being caught on a highway doing 151 miles (243 kilometers) an hour. Only Finland regularly hands out similarly hefty fines to speeding drivers, with the current record believed to be a euro170,000 (then about $190,000) ticket in 2004.

The Swiss court appeared to set a new world record when it levied the nearly quarter million dollar fine in November, describing the speeder as a ?traffic thug? in their verdict as they took into account his prior traffic record as well as his $20 million in personal wealth. Swiss voters approved a 2007 penal law overhaul that let judges hand down fines based on personal income and wealth for moderate misdemeanors including excessive speeding and drunk driving.

The nationalist Swiss People’s Party wants to reverse the 2007 penal code changes, saying the current law could lead to “ridiculously low” penalties without any possibility of jail time for poor people who are caught driving drunk or speeding.

AFRICANS IMPOUND THOUSANDS OF MOTORCYCLES FOR LACK OF HELMETS

Lagos State Sector Command authorities in this Nigerian city reportedly impounded 21,300 motorcycles last year because of failure of the motorcyclists to wear crash helmets.

Public Education Officer, Mrs Ijeoma Nwachi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the command has intensified enforcement on the usage of crash helmets in the state. The public education officer also said that the command had confiscated 3,500 substandard helmets since January 2009. She said wearing of crash helmets by motorcyclists and their passengers was in line with section 41(1) (e) of the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2004.

Nwachi also said that overloading with passengers is a serious issue, and added that many motorcyclists were in the habit of riding without side mirrors. ?Riding without side mirror is an offence under section 41(1)(p) of the Nation Road Traffic Regulations 2004, which states that all motorcycles shall be equipped with two rear view mirrors,? she said.

WEIRD NEWS: MAN ASSAULTED OVER PICTURES OF MOTORCYCLE

In a twisted version of ?Dog the Bounty Hunter? meets ?Repo Man?, Sioux Falls Police say a man hired to repossess a motorcycle ended up assaulting and kidnapping the bike owner?s dad instead.

A South Dakota father received a call from a man claiming he needed pictures of a motorcycle that his son owned. The father thought the person calling was from a dealership and needed evidence for a payment plan he had set up, but when the undercover repo guy arrived at his home, the bike owner?s dad became uneasy and told him he didn’t feel comfortable with the man taking pictures of the motorcycle.

The repossession agent refused to leave and when the father said he was going to call the police, he put the dad in hand-cuffs and threatened him with a taser. He was later arrested for aggravated assault and kidnapping.

NCOM BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND REGIONAL MEETING IN PHILLY

?As co-director of NCOM Region II (IA, KS, MO, NE, OK, TX), I recently attended the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Semi-Annual Board of Directors and Regional Meeting, November 13-15 in Philadelphia, PA, where over 300 motorcyclists took part in the conference,? reported Tiger Mike Revere of ABATE of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Confederation of Clubs.

Continuing his ?Tiger Tales? report; ?Following the morning?s NCOM Board Meeting, the afternoon Region VII Meeting consisted of a number of valuable and informative presentations on Biker Freedom-related topics, such as Freedom of the Road throughout the Nation, and Legal Issues such as Noise Abatement, Insurance Coverage, and interacting with Law Enforcement. The Regional Confederation of Clubs Meeting and Christian Unity Conference were also well-attended, with a lot of productive crosstalk, and Gimme Jimmy was there to present the Defenders? Program.

Incidentally, our recent successful Call to Action regarding Federal-level Right To Repair Legislation constituted a Nationwide test and fine-tuning of the Defenders Program. NCOM is very interested to hear more about the Strategic Alliance Program pioneered by our own Oklahoma Confederation of Clubs. This Alliance of Spiritual groups, Clean and Sober Clubs, and community service-oriented riders such as the Downed Bikers Association, is designed to function as a quick-response force to support the Riding Community during incidents where motorcyclists get killed, injured or locked down.

The NCOM Board has been expanded to include representation from the Sport Bike Community with a Board Liaison position for the National Sport Bike Association, now held by Brian ?Seven? Lawson. Quite a large number of Sport Bike Riders attended the conference, which was gratifying to see. All in all, the stage is now set for one of the largest and most festive NCOM Conventions ever, our Silver Anniversary event slated for May 6-9, 2010 in Orlando, Florida. Check out the NCOM Website at www.aimncom.com for a Pre-Registration application and make plans to attend!

There’s still a lot of political game-playing going on and bikers have to keep learning to play the game more effectively if we’re going to continue to be a force for good in the Motorcycling Community. Politics, by definition, addresses the skill of acquiring and utilizing power. By becoming more active participants in all levels of government through registering and voting, communicating with legislators, and attending events like the NCOM Convention and local legislative seminars, we’ll wield a greater degree of power as a special interest group representing this country?s ridership.?

BIKERNET THINK-TANK FINDINGS–As travel costs and delays increase and the traveling public becomes disgruntled over them, perhaps the TSA and the airlines should look into how these increased costs are perceived and how they can change the public’s views on both cost and security.

For example, combine outrage over skyrocketing heath care costs and airline security by dropping the term “security screening” and replacing it with “Free Full Body Health Scan.” Let the Health Care Industry pay for the privilege through advertisement on the machines. If further screening is necessary a passenger will be told that they have won a free “Hands On” checkup by a licensed professional at no extra charge. As long as the screeners are wearing white lab coats with their names stitched to the pocket and a stethoscope around their neck, who would possibly complain?

Never should we be told that our “Baggage Fees” have increased. Rather, allow the insurance giants to sell us mandatory bag insurance at $25-$35 per bag. Then, if our bags are lost, stolen or sent to the wrong destination, at least we can recoup that fee along with a healthy insurance claim payout. The insurance giants would immediately move to improve baggage handling to increase their bottom line and travelers would feel they are actually receiving something tangible for their money.

While in flight, the captive passengers can receive a “Free Real Estate or Financial Investment Opportunity Seminar” in exchange for a free meal served by specially trained stewards and stewardesses. The airline would receive fees from the industries involved and the increased revenue can fund travel discounts. After all, I get at least one of these meal offers in the mail each month anyway but never seem to have the time or desire to coup myself up long enough to listen to the pitch.

Finally, Detroit is keen to have us test drive their new products. Allow the Automakers to pick us up at the Airport in brand new vehicles and pitch their product all the way to our destination. This service will be free and available within a 30 mile radius of the airport. This will insure a steady stream of customers and virtually guarantee that better mileage vehicles are presented first.

Ole and Sven die in a snowmobiling accident, drunker than skunks, and go to Hell.

The Devil observes that they are really enjoying themselves. He says to them ‘Doesn’t the heat and smoke bother you?

Ole replies, ‘Vell, ya know, ve’re from nordern Minnesooota, da land of snow an ice, an ve’re yust happy fer a chance ta varm up a little bit, ya know.’

The devil decides that these two aren’t miserable enough and turns up the heat even more.

When he returns to the room of the two guys from Minnesota , the devil finds them in light jackets and hats, grilling Walleye and drinking beer.

The devil is astonished and exclaims, ‘Everyone down here is in abject misery, and you two seem to be enjoying yourselves?’

Sven replies, ‘Vell, ya know, ve don’t git too much varm veather up dere at da Falls, so ve’ve yust got ta haff a fish fry vhen da veather’s dis nice.’

The devil is absolutely furious. He can hardly see straight.. Finally he comes up with the answer. The two guys love the heat because they have been cold all their lives. The devil decides to turn all the heat off in Hell. The next morning, the temperature is 60 below zero, icicles are hanging everywhere, and people are shivering so bad that they are unable to wail, moan or gnash their teeth.

The devil smiles and heads for the room with Ole and Sven. He gets there and finds them back in their parkas, bomber hats, and mittens. They are jumping up and down, cheering, yelling and screaming like mad men.

The devil is dumbfounded,> ‘I don’t understand, when I turn up the heat you’re happy. Now its freezing cold and you’re still happy. What is wrong with you two?’

They both look at the devil in surprise and say, ‘Vell, don’t ya know, if hell iss froze over, dat must mean da Vikings von da Super Bowl’

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER Healthy Resolutions: Exercise GODDAMNIT!–Want to add years to your life? Make regular, moderate exercise part of your healthy lifestyle routine. Physical activity is good for the body, mind and spirit, helps maintain and improve the health of your heart, reduces the risk of diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer?s, promotes energy, quality rest and a healthy weight, helps manage unhealthy stress, and can address symptoms of mild to moderate depression.

So why isn?t everyone exercising? People can always find excuses not to exercise, but really – there is no good reason. To reap all these benefits, all most people need is 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity at least four days a week, including at least two days of strength training, and a stretching routine.

It?s simple to begin: rent fitness DVDs, join a gym, make an appointment with a personal trainer, or simply get some friends together for daily walks.

Gladiator

Biker in Florida Pulled Over for Wearing a Gladiator Helmet–Pam Guenther was enjoying a Saturday morning ride on the back of her husband’s motorcycle in Ocala, Fla., when a cop driving in the other direction abruptly turned around and pulled them to the side of the road.

“I knew we weren’t speeding,” Guenther told Asylum. “So my first question was why is he pulling us over? [The officer] just pointed to my husband and said, ‘He’s wearing a mask, and it’s illegal to cover your face when riding a motorcycle.'”

Luis Santiago’s motorcycle helmet, a custom-modified gladiator-style head protector (pictured), is certainly a bit different. Yet, as Guenther pointed out to the officer, it doesn’t obscure the face any more than the typical tinted-visor biker helmet would. Nevertheless, the officer wrote Santiago up a warning for “wearing a mask prohibited.”

Irked by what had gone down, and sure her husband hadn’t done anything approaching illegal, Guenther contacted the Florida Highway Patrol. She was eventually told that Santiago was in violation of Florida statute FL 876.12.

“876.12 is a criminal statute based on an old (anti-) Klan law where you are not allowed to cover your face or head,” says Guenther, who has sought legal counsel. “It isn’t suppose to be a traffic rule that applies to people on motorcycles.”

When we got in touch with Captain Mark Welch, the Chief of Public Affairs for the Florida Highway Patrol, he also cited FL 876.12. In addition, he speculated that the officer may have pulled Santiago over because he wasn’t sure if Santiago was wearing eye-protection, which is required by state law. (Although, again, it’s hard to see how Santiago’s helmet differs from some more traditional ones in that respect.)

While it is true that a literal reading of 876.12 would prohibit face masks, we asked Welch if it’s typical for bikers to be cited or warned on that statute. “This is somewhat unusual,” he admitted. “In fact, it’s the first case that I know of.”

Guenther feels that she and her husband were unfairly targeted by what she describes as “a young officer jealous of a cool bike and a cool helmet looking for a reason to pull us over.” What she wants is for the department to apologize and make clear that a biker protecting his face is not breaking any laws.

Florida law doesn’t require adult bikers to wear helmets

SPEAKING OF DRACONIAN LAWS, THE BIKERNET ENGLISH CLASS SPEAKS UP–draconian dray-KOHN-ee-uhn; druh-, adjective:
1. Pertaining to Draco, a lawgiver of Athens, 621 B.C.
2. Excessively harsh; severe.

It was drizzling outside Friday as the governor was unveiling his budget with its painful program cuts that even he called draconian.
— George Skelton, “The worst budget mess ever”, Los Angeles Times, January 11, 2010

In October 1996 Allen publicly admitted that his draconian cost-cutting campaign had had devastating effects on Delta’s workforce.
— Daniel Goleman, Working with Emotional Intelligence

The most straightforward solution would be a draconian crackdown on all unrest — curfews, house-to-house searches, firing on armed rioters, mass internment, widespread use of capital punishment for terrorists, and so on.
— John O’Sullivan, “Dangerous Restraint”, National Review, April 6, 2004

Draconian refers to a code of laws made by Draco. Their measures were so severe that they were said to be written in blood.

They are going about 300 miles /day on the run, so the trip will take’mabout 10 days!

Rules Of The Ride

These machines are old and most are very rare. A lot of these early bikes would not be on the road today were it not for new parts. In a lot of cases only the motor survived to be resurrected into its former self. As long as the engine in your machine is original then its eligible to run for the prize. Any reproduction chassis or parts should be as they were originally.

BRAKES……..We are all aware that 100 years ago brakes were not that good. If in any way you can improve your braking ability, to the point of even adding a front brake, then it is highly recommended.

CARBS AND MAGS……The original carbs, whether modified or updated some, need to be used, spares allowed. If your magneto isn’t rebuilt you should consider it. We want each bike to use it’s intended ignition source, spares allowed.

We’ll bring you more rules and updates next week.–Wilburn Roach, Bikernet Antique Authority

HISTORIC INTERVIEW FROM BIKERNET OLD FOLKS HOME–Let’s hope this happens to all of us! 98 and no enemies – human interest story.

All women should live so long as to be this kind of old lady! Toward the end of Sunday service, the Minister asked, ‘ How many of you have forgiven your enemies? ‘ 80% held up their hands. The Minister then repeated his question. All responded this time, except one small elderly lady.

‘Mrs. Neely?’; ‘ Are you not willing to forgive your enemies? ‘

I don’t have any. ‘She replied, smiling sweetly.

‘Mrs. Neely, that is very unusual. How old are you? ‘

‘Ninety-eight, ‘she replied. The congregation stood up and clapped their hands.

‘Oh, Mrs. Neely, would you please come down in front & tell us all how a person can live ninety-eight years & not have an enemy in the world? ‘

The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, faced the congregation, and said, ‘ I outlived the bitches.. ‘

5ballracingart

BIKERNET SPECIAL REPORT FROM THE UNCLE MONKEY ARCHIVES–Well all the presents have been opened. The trusty leather belt loosen up a couple of holes. The trees and all the tinsel have been packed away for another year. The days ago have been remembered and laid to rest. A new year is upon us and we stare out into the abyss of what is to come.

Those of us in the Snow Belt we have been battling almost consistent -40 temperatures. For my American friends -40 is the same in both temperatures – damn cold. But this year there is more optimism then other years. Countdowns to riding season have started even though the newscasts call for another 3 inches of snow. Some say 90 days, overly optimistic for anyone who lives in Saskatchewan anyways, others say 120 which at least puts us into April which certainly do-able.

As I said there seems to be more of a buzz this year then others. More trips, more rides, more memories to make. Perhaps it is the offspring of having a usually cold summer last year and an extended deep freeze going into this year that has us chomping at the bit to get out and ride.

For me a new year means a new spending budget for my bike, thankfully I have nothing major to do, only tightening up the few small things that the purse strings couldn’t loosen up for last fall. The yearly events are falling into place the Christian Riders PMS potluck supper in January, RMAI Swap Meet in February, Moose Jaw Motorcycle Association March Swap Meet. St Victor Boogie in June, and yes the plan is once again to head to Sturgis in August and maybe check out that Monkey Rock that started up, after all where else would you expect your Uncle Monkey to show up at Sturgis.

As for my friends, the last of the hold outs (besides me) has purchased a new bike. It seems that a weight has been lifted from the group. New machines mean no more worries about breakdowns and the unpredictable results of years of abuse that we heaped on our old machines. New machines also mean new canvases to work and refine, paint, dip, and chrome. New toys, new knick-knacks that have no rhyme or reason other then to make their black Road King to stand out from everyone else?s. The miles that wait, the roads to travel, the places to see knowing that they are on a “dependable” machine.

2010 is the second year of riding for my wife. The simple little Honda snuggled up close to my Fat Boy for warmth and comfort in the frigid Saskatchewan cold. But even she too has got the itch to get out and ride, to reach new milestones, to once again feel the freedom that only riding her own motorcycle can bring. She’s happy with her progress and continues to encourage other women to take that first step to riding their own machine.

A new year means a fresh start, a new beginning and all that hubbub that we always say. I hope to see old friends on the road and to make new ones along the way. Now if you don’t mind I have to start crossing the days off my calendar.

Need More Excitement in Your Life? Jump Off a Building!–Riding in everyday traffic on the road is not enough excitement for you? All the idiots cutting you off and acting stupid don’t get your adrenalin up anymore? The Stratosphere over in Vegas got just the thing for you: Skyjump Las Vegas.

The guys at the highest building on the strip recently announced what may just become one of the top tourist attractions in North America. Adrenaline junkies and average Joes alike will have the opportunity to plummet 855 feet off the Stratosphere in a controlled free-fall at speeds of up to 40 mph. If you can bear to keep your eyes open, the view may actually be quite nice, too. SkyJump Las Vegas will offer a way to experience thrills similar to skydiving and base jumping – with the added benefit of doing it over the Las Vegas Strip – day or night.

The attraction is expected to open April of 2010, and will join three thrill rides already atop the tower: Big Shot, X-Scream and Insanity.

All things considered, this may actually turn out safer than the daily ride to work…

Rep. Steve Kirby takes on discrimination against … bikers? —He calls it motorcycle profiling and he wants it to stop. That’s the message in Tacoma Democratic Rep. Steve Kirby’s House Bill 2511. http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=2511&year=2009

The bill would direct all police agencies to develop policies to “condemn and prevent” motorcycle profiling. The cops also would have to have written policies against the practice, work with motorcycle groups to address the issue and train all officers.

The bill defines motorcycle profiling like this: For the purposes of this section, “motorcycle profiling” means using the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related paraphernalia as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without legal basis under the United States Constitution or the Washington state Constitution.

CALIFORNIA State Assembly Committee Passes Bill to Tax and Regulate Marijuana, SAVES ECONOMY–Historic marijuana reform bill is the first time in nation?s history that a state legislative committee has approved proposal to tax and regulate marijuana.

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA ? Today, in a 4 to 3 vote, the California Assembly?s Public Safety Committee passed A.B. 390, legislation that would tax and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. This is the first time in U.S. history that a state legislature has ever passed?or even considered?a proposal to make marijuana legal, taxed, and regulated. A.B. 390, the Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education Act was authored by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), the chair of the committee.

The bill will not progress any further this year due to the constraints of the legislative calendar but advocates praised today?s vote as a major milestone in ongoing efforts to end marijuana prohibition.

?Today?s vote should give voters confidence that California?s failed and unjust war on marijuana consumers will soon come to an end,? said Aaron Smith, California policy director for the Marijuana Policy Project, who testified before the committee. ?It?s an encouraging sign that most members of the committee presiding over the state?s penal code have voted to toss marijuana prohibition onto the ash heap of history.?

With more than 29,000 members and 100,000 e-mail subscribers nationwide, the Marijuana Policy Project is the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States. MPP believes that the best way to minimize the harm associated with marijuana is to regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. For more information, please visit www.mpp.org.

So far this rule has only been accepted by the SCTA folks and not the AMA. If you would like to see it expanded, you might want to send them a note.

Ex-Miami-Dade judge gets 20 years for theft of public funds–Disgraced Miami-Dade judge Phillip Davis received 20 years in prison for looting county and state grants intended to help the poor.Former Miami-Dade Judge Phillip Davis, who once won acquittal in a notorious bribery case, will be sentenced Friday for looting county grant money intended to help the inner-city poor. A jury in November convicted Davis, 56, and former assistant Joan Headley on nine fraud and money-laundering charges, all felonies. They face from four to 30-plus years in prison. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Beatrice Butchko will sentence them Friday afternoon.

Phillip Davis couldn’t beat the rap again. Sixteen years after the former Miami-Dade judge was acquitted in a notorious bribery and extortion case, Miami-Dade jurors on Tuesday convicted Davis of looting public grant money paid to his inner-city social services agency.

Davis, 55, was immediately handcuffed and taken to jail. Six jurors convicted him of nine felony counts, including money laundering, organized fraud and grand theft.

After three hours of deliberations, the jury tasked with judging Miami Rev. Gaston Smith sent out a note asking the judge some very direct questions. What records existed to show Smith snagged a generous grant from the Burger King company? Was there any evidence he helped create a Liberty City senior citizens garden? How many fliers touting his nonprofit group actually got printed? The jurors wanted specifics — but got none.

Sucker Punch bike of the week.

Hey,

The Vibe this week is positive, no negative waves. I spoke to Ken at Kendon Trailers. He’s excited about 2010. The orders are flowing in. In fact Bikernet is ordering a 3-bike trailer to haul our Bonneville and show bikes to events.

Bonnebelleorig
Here’s a shot of the original Bonne Bell. The original frame is now for sale.

I spoke to Ron at Paughco and he’s pumped up about his Sportster line of products and the rigid frames he’s been building for 35 years. Anyone can buy a wrecked Sportster cheap and drop it into a Paughco rigid. Makes for a very cool, low-buck chop. He recently dropped a Sportster engine into one of his new single loop 45 frames and it worked like a champ. He’s also excited about the trike market and is building trike rear ends for big twins and Sportsters.

Bonnebellepaughco frame
Here’s the new single loop frame from Paughco. It allows us to intall and 4 or 5-speed transmission. That made all the difference in the world.

Here’s a shot of the new Paughco frame for the Bonne Belle, our entry into the Bonneville running for 2010. The bike is being built by the gang at Departure Bike Works in Richmond, Virginia. Hang on for lots of reports next week. Let’s hit the news:

ART OF THE CHOPPER BIKE READY TO ROCK & ROLL–A great chopper is not built, it?s created. It begins as the seed of an idea germinating in the mind of its creator. Bit by bit, the builder brings the machine to life? This essence and purity is what Tom Zimberoff captured in his first book, Art of the Chopper published by Motorbooks Int?l in 2003. Zimberoff?s engaging text provides an in-depth analysis of the each designer?s philosophy and unique style.

This chopper is the reincarnation of Tom Zimberoff?s original ?Art Of The Chopper? bike. The original bike was mint green, swoopy and not quite road worthy.

The Brass Balls team was tasked with the challenge of making Tom?s sled cool, ride-able and keeping as many of the existing components as possible. This Chopper is ready for ignition… Get your motor running at Brass Balls Bobbers

Don’t miss the Sacramento show this weekend.

EASYRIDERS POMONA SHOW REPORT FROM THE BOSS– 2008-09 were disappointing as far as the number of new builds is concerned. There were a lot of new builds this year. That’s great news.

Attendance was what we expected about par with last year. The vendors reports were much better than 08-09. Another good sign.

Our local partners and sponsors really stepped up this year, I am extremely grateful for all of the help we received this year. It really is motivating when the local business steps up and gets involved with the success of an event.

It’s off to Sacramento for our next Show. Sac has never let us down. The bikes are spectacular in that region. It is one show I really look forward to every year.

Oh BTW this is my 20th year on the road with Easyriders. It’s been a trip.

BLACK IS THE NEW CHROME– Billet Mirrors – The mirror housing is anodized black and the mirror itself is glass, not a plastic. Aeromach only uses glass because it glass has the best optical properties.

The Optical Secret ? The reason an Aeromach mirror is desirable is because of the billet. The density of the aluminum is much higher than the cast stock mirrors from Harley or other accessory suppliers. This metal density combined with glass optics instead of plastic increases the clarity of the mirror by as much as 40% over stock.

The Aeromach mirrors and stems are manufactured in NASCAR country right outside of Charlotte, NC using aircraft quality solid billet extruded T6 aluminum. When the CNC machine isn?t carving up 200 MPH go fast parts, its delivering consistent design and quality motorcycle mirrors, stems and grips.

BIKERNET INSURANCE WEEKLY SEMINAR–Quite frankly, bikers have a lot of options when it comes to purchasing insurance to protect themselves and their machines. Seems like there’s a “quick quoter” everywhere on the web. BUT, are you really getting good motorcycle insurance?

“Good Insurance” as we, at the Bikernet Insurance Center define it, must include the following:
1. Insurance coverage that addresses and meets your specific protection needs.
2. Adequate coverage limits that actually protect you, yours, your bike and others.
3. A price you can afford to pay.
4. An insurance company who treats you right should all hell break loose. (aka: an accident/claim)

Insurancemarc
Our Bikernet Insurance agent, Marc B. He’s cool.

Items to consider as you venture into the “wild & crazy” world of motorcycle insurance.
1. Motorcycle – Older, basic, motorcycles will cost you less to insure. Go fancy and flashy custom and it will cost you more.
2. Age – If you are new to riding it will cost you more than us ol’ Bros and Babes. Experience is a key rating factor.
3. Address – Sometimes, where you live greatly influences your premium level. Live in a high crime area? Sorry, the insurance company will likely charge more.
4. Driving Record – “All” accidents count. Crashed your car. Counts. Crashed your truck. Counts. The cleaner your driving record the less you’ll pay for motorcycle insurance.
5. Job – if you have one these days? Where you drive and park your bike matters to your rate. On the street in the open during your work day and you’ll pay more.
6. Security – Batten down the locks and secure your motorcycle when parked. Keep it garaged, alarm it and you may get additional discounts.
7. Miles per year – seems most applicants for motorcycle insurance drive less than 2,000 miles per year. Low mileage and pleasure use will cost you less.
8. Training – Take a course and obtain the certification certificate. Many insurers offer a discount for safety training.

Go ahead. Contact the Bikernet Insurance Center for your insurance.
1. You’ll get straight-forward, no bullcrap insurance know-how and advice.
2. The best combination of coverage and price for you and your bike(s).
3. We’ll always treat you with respect. You are not just a “policy number” with us.

So send us an email at clientservice@bikernet-insurance.com or call toll free 888-467-8703 and one of our biker agents will contact you asap.

HEDGE FUND EXECUTIVE TURNED PRODUCER OF NEW iTV SHOW ABOUT WOMEN MOTORCYCLISTS–Mountainside, NJ (January 12, 2010) ? HeelsonWheels.tv , the internet TV (?iTV?) show geared toward promoting motorcycling and women debuted its first episode on December 18, 2009. The iTV site was founded by Charles (Chuck) Pirao and wife Sandra (who rides her own Big V-Twin), with the objective of bringing awareness about motorcycling to the women?s community ? regarded as the market segment with the greatest growth potential for the motorcycle industry.

Chuck was the Chief Operating Officer of Deutsche Bank?s Fund of Hedge Funds group (DB Investment Managers, Inc.) until February 2009, at which point he was displaced on account of the financial crisis that erupted in mid 2008. Another example of Wall Street turnover, and when combined with high unemployment executives are often faced with putting their entrepreneurship skills to the test.

Heels on Wheels TV is not your ordinary show catering to women. The novelty concept begins with a show hosted by three friends with careers in Big Pharma, Banking and Legal ? that ride motorcycles with a passion! The Show, scheduled to publish its third episode next week, maintains a level of humor and entertainment in order to convey to viewers a relaxed setting, whereby making it approachable and accessible to entry-level female motorcyclists, as well as creating a bonding experience with the more seasoned female riders.

Commenting on today?s news, the founders said ?This concept was the furthest thing from our minds as recent as six months ago, but today we are excited about the opportunity to do something we are passionate about. We hope to embrace this mega-trend over the next decade, as iTV quickly gains momentum as the future tipping point for digital media?.

Starting your own venture may not be as easy as it appears. The founder admits to having spent many long, although productive days, and many sleepless nights ? dealing with post-production, troubleshooting technology issues, and marketing the new iTV show. ?It has been a steep learning curve, but the knowledge I?ve gained is immeasurable and the sense of accomplishment is even greater!?, claims Chuck as he and the show hosts prepare for the NYC International Motorcycle Show on January 22nd, and coordinate a charity event for May 23rd.

Behind The Scenes–Dirty Bills Chrome

Dirty Joe’s Chrome Shop

What looks like a mild mannered shop is really a local hangout for everything hot rod or bike related. All the local rodders know where to go when you want the chrome to get you home.

Low rider 1

The great state of Texas has such a vast amount of real estate, I cannot believe it wasn’t broken up into 4 separate states years ago. It can take more than a day just to travel through the state. If you left Beaumont, Texas at 7:30 am, you would not be in El Paso, Texas until at least 7:30 that night. Then you would still have another hour to drive before you hit the New Mexico border. My point is, Texas is one big Mamma Jamma!

chevelle

When you live in a state as large as Texas, you come to realize you also have a much larger selection for parts and accessories than most other states. How many Chrome shops do you suppose there are in Arkansas?

Here in Texas, we have more than a few shops to choose from. Finding a shop that does quality work for a decent price is exceptionally hard. In an effort to scour the state for shops we can recommend to our readers, Bandit had me driving the back roads of Texas looking for the very best. While I did locate several to choose from, there was only a handful that really stand apart from the rest.

This month’s featured shop is Dirt Joe’s Chrome Shop which is located in the big “D”, Dallas, Texas.

Now Dallas is the land of Milk and Honey here in Texas. While Houston is an industrial and cultural giant, Austin is a historic college town; Dallas is where the bling really shines. Everybody who is anybody in Texas stays in or around Dallas. That’s where the shine is to the Texas star. Just look at the helmets of the Dallas Cowboys.

Dirty Joes is an amazing shop that has mastered the art of polish, powder coat, and chrome. They are fully equipped to handle parts trade-ins and exchanges for the finish of your choice. They handle business for high profile celebrities like Jetman, and master builder Kendall Johnson. Now you all know as well as I do, a quality finish can make or break your bike or car, so why not ensure you put the best on your vehicle?

Give Dirty Joe’s a call at (214)343-8871, or check them on the web at www.dirtyjoeschrome.com. Be sure to tell them Bikernet sent ya!

(ASMI), a national provider of training for motorcycle safety related classes, today announced the launch of Road Guardians, a program aimed at reducing injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists by promoting safety on the road, and roadguardians.org, its one stop online for all motorcycle safety, legal and rider networking resources. According to ASMI, one of the principal values of the Road Guardian program and website is that it provides member?s quick access to safety education and rider resources whatever their skill level, supporting the beginner through the life-long enthusiast.

The Road Guardian program provides incentives and recognition to encourage educated responsible riding through continued education that extends beyond Basic Rider classes. Road Guardian members enjoy enhanced website benefits such as collaborative ride & event planners and over 1000 discounts! Members can work to achieve certification which includes Accident Scene Management Basic & Advanced Training, CPR, and Basic Rider Education.

In addition, annual refresher courses are provided to members online and include updates to reflect the latest in techniques and recommendations. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, only 3% of all roadway crashes involve motorcyclists yet 17% of traffic fatalities are motorcycle related. Statistically, another motorcyclist is first on the scene of a motorcycle crash. More than 15,000 students have completed ASMI?s ANCC accredited U.S. Department of Transportation, first-responder-based curriculum that teaches them how to start proper & effective emergency care until help arrives.

Vicki Sanfelipo, Co-founder and President of Road Guardians stated, ?To date, 29% of all students having completed one of our safety courses has used their training within 3 years of being trained. Our goal is to promote safety education for all bikers through our Road Guardian program. It encourages life-long learning and saves lives.?

Roadguardians.org enhances the Road Guardian program by providing access to a variety of free resources including state and national safety resources, local and national events, biker-recommended legal resources, motorcycle-related businesses and offers members incentives and rewards.

Safety Resources. Training courses and programs organized in six education categories developed by the National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety (NAMS).
Legal Resources. Access personal injury lawyers recommended by bikers and validated using a six point system which includes ethics and peer ratings.
Biker-Owned Businesses. Members nominate businesses in their local community to connect bikers with bikers that can help with everything from a hair cut to home repairs.
News and Events. Lists scheduled activities and motorcycle news impacting the biker community.
Members Only. Access to group riding education, including real-time collaborative ride planners and event planning tools, online refresher course, vendor incentives and discounts, online ride and safety training recordkeeping, and other resources to support Road Guardian members.

Nationally recognized speakers will be sharing their knowledge on topics such as proper braking, ABS, Impairment & Awareness, and motorcycle crash situational learning. Vendors will be displaying safety related products and will give participants an opportunity to ask the experts questions about their products. Registrations are now being accepted at www.roadguardians.org and are open to all motorcyclists.

Basic Road Guardian program membership (which requires ASMI Basic training) is $19.95 annually and is available immediately for purchase at www.roadguardians.org . For a list of ASMI classes, visit www.accidentscene.org.

BIKERNET GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATION TEAM FINDINGS–Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown in the economy, Congress has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 50 years of age and above on early retirement, thus creating jobs and reducing unemployment.

This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early).Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to Congress to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination).

Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (System Covering Retired-Early Workers).

A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as Congress deems appropriate.

Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependants & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance).

Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by Congress.

Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. Congress has always prided themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens.

Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your Congressman, who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle.

Sincerely,
–The Committee for Economic Value of Individual Lives (E.V.I.L.)

This is happening in too many places around the country– The MMA is scheduled to meet with Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) Registrar Rachael Kaprielian and Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation Jeffrey Mullan on Monday, January 11, 2010 to discuss the misappropriated Motorcycle Safety Fund monies.

The RMV reported 182,215 motorcycles registered through September 2009. According to MMA calculations there should have been $364,430 deposited into the Safety Fund Account ($2.00 per registered motorcycle). Since there wasonly $177,801 initially deposited, $12,157 was removed, AND another $50,000 was also removed for other purposes, the MMA is fighting to get $248,786 added back to this fund and demand we receive a full accounting of the monies already stolen from this fund.

M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 34 specifically states, “$2 from each motorcycle registration fee shall be paid by the registrar or by the person collecting the registration fee into the General Fund and shall be appropriated solely for the purpose of promoting and advancing motorcycle safety.”

To repeat: By Law, $364,430 should have been put into the Motorcycle Safety Fund to be used solely for safety and awareness.

Please send a WRITTEN LETTER to RMV Registrar Kaprielian, MASSDOT Secretary Jeffrey Mullan, and Governor Deval Patrick TODAY expressing your feelings regarding the raiding of YOUR Safety Fund. The addresses are at the end of this message and a sample letter is available on the MMA’s Web Site.

For MAXIMUM IMPACT, we need your letters to get there BEFORE our meeting!

Valentine’s Day Already? Don’t Worry, Still Time–The retail industry has not only given us holidays which, in reality, were never meant for gift-giving, they also seem to start earlier each year to guilt us into buying stuff for others than ourselves. While this is mostly a major factor contributing to stress, it may as well be an enjoyable pursuit.

Even though the intention behind merchandise labeled ‘special edition’ or ‘seasonal’ may often be ‘buy it already, godamnit’, some offerings in these categories may just have merit. Like the ‘Valentine’s Lingerie Collection from the guys at Wickedelic over in England.

?If you want to indulge the lady in your life with a luxurious and sexy lingerie set there is plenty of choice at Wickedelic,? according to Sonia Jeffery, purchasing manager at Wickedelic Lingerie. BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDINGS, GREEN TEA BEATS THE BLUES–Folks are less likely to be depressed if they sip four or more cups of green tea daily. In a study involving both men and women, all of whom were over 70, Japanese researchers found that those subjects who drank more than four cups of green tea were 44 percent less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who drank less than four cups daily.

The effects of green tea held true even after the researchers factored in gender, social and economic status, diet, history of medical problems and antidepressant use. No such association with depression was found for black or oolong tea or coffee.

More studies are needed to confirm that drinking green tea really does have an anti-depressant effect, but the investigators noted that the amino acid theanine found in green tea may play a role in the benefits they saw. The study was published in the December 2009 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

STOLEN JEFF DECKER SCULPTURE DISCOVERED–LINDON — The mystery involving the disappearance of a statue worth $100,000 from a motorcycle dealership in Lindon over the weekend appears to be solved.

The statue was found at the home of the artist who created it. It seems he believes the statue is his and was on loan, while the Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealership listed it as an asset in its current bankruptcy filing. Now Lindon police are investigating the artist.

Lindon Police Chief Cody Cullimore says, “He has expressed his opinion that it is his property. He has admitted he was involved in arranging to have it removed from Timpanogos Harley-Davidson’s property. So again, we are determining if there was anything criminal in this incident.”

Store managers called police Saturday morning and reported the 4-ton metal statue on a rock slab, title “Land Speed,” was missing.

When news got out Saturday about the theft, police received numerous calls from people who saw it being removed by a crane truck.

Detectives eventually tracked down the statue at the home of the artist, Jeff Decker, in Springville.

Police say Decker did know the dealership had listed the statue as an asset in its bankruptcy filing in late November.

The artist claims he told the dealership he was coming to get it and was told he could not, but apparently he did take it on Friday.

The police will pass the case to prosecutors, who will have to determine if it is a criminal case or a civil one.

WITHOUT OXY

BIKERNET STUDIES FUEL ADDITIVE, OXYTANE– Do you know the potential for return on investment in Combustion Research?:In any area of the economy where a huge amount of money is spent, even the most modest improvements in efficiency can mean savings of very large amounts of money. One goal of the combustion research within NASA’s microgravity science program is to generate knowledge that may eventually lead to more efficient combustion, and therefore a saving of fuel.

In the first half of 1996, the United States imported an average of 9,285,000 barrels of oil per day.* In addition, to this imported oil, we used about 18,000,000 barrels of domestic oil per day.* On September 9, 1996, a barrel of OPEC crude oil cost $20.34.* One can therefore estimate the yearly expenditure on crude oil as nearly $200 billion.

This amount of money would finance one space shuttle mission each day for a year.A mere 1 percent increase in fuel efficiency, like taking your gas mileage from 25 miles per gallon to 25.25 miles per gallon, would translate into a savings to America of nearly 100 million barrels of oil a year (roughly $5.5 million per day), repaying more than the cost of the entire mission every year.

OXYTANE

Did You Know That:The cost of a space shuttle mission is about $2 per person in America. In 1992, Americans spent over $114 billion dollars at the pump, or about $456 per person.** So, the same 1 percent increase in efficiency above, which each American taxpayer would pay $2 to obtain, would save them $4.56 each year.

**Data obtained from 1992 Census of Retail Trade published by the Census Bureau If one assumes Carbon deposits penalize fuel economy 10% in the fleet. Then using that 10% restoration in fuel economy alone with the price per barrel of crude at $60 . Using the equation above the savings in the USA alone are in excess of $ 150,000,000.00 per day.

We will continue to bring you more information about fuel useage, deteriorated fuel, and the EPA regs. Oxytane restores damaged fuel and removes static electricity.

GOING MEDIEVAL, GOTHIC, OR GOTH (Where is that girl?)–Gothic, or Goth, is nowadays mostly associated with kids wearing black clothes influenced by industrial design and a rather dark view of the world. As an offshoot of the punk movement of the 1980s in England, goth has come a long way and, despite being pronounced dead numerous times, evolved into several forms of cultural and subcultural movements – some of them rated M. Mixed into one of the modern day gothic subcultures is the aesthetic of the 12th century medieval gothic art movement that originated in France and was later absorbed in the Renaissance.

vanAsch_pic2

When it comes to contemporary gothic, or medieval, clothing, there is much more to be had than the run-of-the-mill stuff you see at a certain nationwide mall-based chain who claims their roots in the music scene. Former performer and stage-costume maker Rachel van Asch, for example, discovered her passion for medieval fashion over a decade ago and launched her own exclusive label in 2000. Fusing eclectic and traditional inspirations, Rachel offers her creations also online at www.vanash.co.uk.

DA PEESTOP

NEW JERSEY MOTORCYCLISTS WON A HUGE VICTORY DECEMBER 3!–A great big THANK YOU to everyone who answered ABATE’s “Call to Action”!!

Six members of ABATE of the Garden State attended the Senate Transportation Committee meeting on December 3 which was to vote on Senate Bill S3062 and its companion Bill A3292. The purpose of this Bill was to enact several new motorcycle safety provisions. ABATE supported most of those provisions but was absolutely against the proposal in the Bill to eliminate the current system of motorcycle inspections. That provision was bad for the motorcyclists of NJ for several important reasons.

When the Bill was called by the Transportation Committee Chairman, Senator Sacco announced that the provision to eliminate motorcycle safety inspections had been withdrawn from the Bill. So even though four of us were prepared to testify, it was not necessary. It was ALL due to the huge response to our Call to Action, and the hundreds upon hundreds of emails you sent and phone calls you made to the Senators? offices.

Senator Van Drew was given an opportunity to speak and he thanked the Chairman for amending that provision out of the Bill. He then turned and spoke to the audience, but was looking at the section where the ABATE members were seated and he spoke directly to us. He said, “You folks did a great job!” and congratulated us. He said, “A lot of people heard from you from all across the State, from North to South to Central and it really made an impact.” Senator Van Drew went on to say, “Removing that provision was the right thing to do.” He was looking at us, but he was really speaking to all motorcyclists. Senator Sacco also thanked us for coming and said, “Thank you for all your emails,” and then chuckled.

The elimination of the motorcycle safety inspections would have had several negative consequences. The majority of riders in NJ are responsible enough to self-inspect their own motorcycles and ensure that they are safe for the road. But we all know that there is a certain percentage who will not, or cannot, or just don’t care. There will be unsafe and uninspected motorcycles on NJ roadways that can contribute to a higher accident rate. And, we know what that will do to our insurance rates!

Eliminating motorcycle inspections is also extremely bad for hundreds of small business in the State, specifically motorcycle dealerships and independent shops, which rely heavily upon the revenue stream they derive from performing motorcycle inspections.

But, perhaps the most troubling aspect of the elimination of motorcycle safety inspections is not what was in this Bill; it is what WAS NOT in the Bill. This piece of legislation would only have eliminated the inspections. It DID NOT say what would take their place. It has been learned that the MVC would have put into place a system of random roadside motorcycle-only safety checkpoints. At first the MVC assured ABATE that ONLY trained MVC personnel would be conducting the actual inspections, with NJ State Police making and enforcing the stops. But, it has recently come to ABATE?s attention that the NJ State Police have been sending officers to be trained on how to conduct the actual inspections! One can only guess how long it would have been be before County and Municipal Police Departments would also start requesting this training. Couldn?t you just imagine seeing these checkpoints being set up near all the major bike runs and at the shore during summer months? Anywhere large numbers of motorcycles congregate, you could count on these checkpoints being there, too!

Without a sticker to prove that a motorcycle had already been inspected, a rider could have theoretically gotten stopped once a week, or even more, to be inspected. This provision was just a way to increase the number of tickets written, and again, bring in more money to State, County and Municipal coffers.

Anyway, it sure feels great to finally win something big like this for the motorcyclists of New Jersey. My sincere thanks to those of you who sent emails and made phone calls. We could not have done it without you!

Our thanks are also extended to the members of the Transportation Committee, Senators Nicholas Sacco, Fred Madden, Andrew Ciesla, Sean Kean and Jeff Van Drew, for listening to their constituents.

When the motorcyclists of New Jersey speak with a unified voice, the Legislature hears it!! The system worked this time, but that is how government should work ALL the time!

If you?re a New Jersey motorcyclist or own a motorcycle-related business in New Jersey, and you?d like to get involved in the fight for our rights, please contact me at: legislativedirector@gardenstateabate.org.

MATT WALKSLER BUILDING FOR THE CANNONBALL– Happy New Year! Hope yours is off to a great start. I’ve been in the shop working hard on the 1916 HD J-Model cutdown I started a few months ago. Lots of framework on this one. Cut 2 inches out of the seat-post. Relocated the bends on the backbone tubes. Cut 1.5 inch off the bottom of the neck, and moved it to the top, then cut a bit out of the rear and jacked up the axle plates. All in all, it sits a heck of a lot lower….about 3 inches of ground clearance instead of a J-models 6-inch clearance. Lots of fun.

Thanks for posting the story in your Sunday news, and thank you for offering to do a feature on this years raffle bike. This year’s ’47 is a nice one, with lots of great accessories to boot. Please let me know what you need for the feature (pictures, spec sheet, etc). I’ll be glad to get them all to you whenever you need them.

Motorcycle Supershow To Honor Toronto Custom Builder Kenny Kerr–Kenny Kerr discovered his love of motorcycles and keen eye for creating master pieces early in life. Growing up in Scarborough Ontario in the early ’60s, his love of bikes drew him to become a member of the infamous bike club the ?Canadian Lancers?. Over the next 40 years Kenny Kerr became a legendary custom bike builder in the motorcycle world.

His early nickname of ?The Eater? later changed to ?Magic?. Kenny operated bike shops in Scarborough, Orillia and three in Newmarket Ontario.

In the early 1960s Kenny Kerr and his friend Ian Stewart were building custom choppers in Scarborough Ontario. One of the most infamous choppers that Kenny Kerr built was ?The Eater?, affectionately named after him. During the late 1960?s and early 1970?s, ?The Eater? toured the United States with celebrated bike builders Ness and Finch.

Upon returning to Canada, the chopper was stored in Kenny?s heated garage for over 30 years. In 2005, it was disassembled, and cleaned. It was sent to Kenny?s old friend and fellow bike builder Ron Finch who repainted it in its original design. In 2007, it was entered in Speedorama and won Best Chopper, and in 2009 it won Best Old School Chopper at the International Motorcycle Supershow.

Amazingly, ?The Eater? has survived over 45 years. In the 60?s and 70?s, choppers were built, shown and dismantled by builders so that they could use parts to build new creations. Kenny Kerr?s ?The Eater? is the only known surviving original 1960?s chopper from that era which he left to his friend Ian Stewart.

This past summer Kenny Kerr passed away leaving an immeasurable void in the Motorcycle community. He will always be remembered for his vision and dedication to bike building. As a tribute to his passion and love of bikes, Ian Stewart will be showcasing ?The Eater? in Hall 5 at the International Centre during Supershow 2010.

The North American International Motorcycle Supershow takes place January 15 to17, at the International Centre, 6900 Airport Road in Mississauga, Canada. Parking is free. For show times and information scoot over to www.supershowevents.com or call (905) 655-5403.

JASMINE

Rock artist Jasmine Cain to appear for booth signing at EMG representing the Women of Rock!–Anaheim, CA?January 3, 2010: Jasmine Cain will be signing autographs for EMG Pickups on Thursday, January 14th from 2:30pm ? 3:30pm.

Jasmine Cain?s new album release Locks & Keys is riding the high waves after winning a record-breaking 6 awards from JPF including Song of the Year ?Give me Love? out of 560,000 song submissions from all unsigned artists worldwide as well as being crowned JPF Female Artist of the Year!!

Jasmine Cain has built her career mostly alone without a manager, agent, record label…just through her sheer passion for music and love for her audience, and the help of loving friends. NAMM proved to be just the warm embrace she needed because stellar manufacturers stepped out to recognize this hard working artist even without an entourage of representatives. They just saw the raw proof in her talent punch as bass player, lead singer and dynamic entertainer.

This is what Nashville’s number one rock station had to say: “Jasmine Cain is THE REAL DEAL. Few new artists come to mind who encompass the essence of rock n roll. Jasmine’s songs are filled with emotion as well as detail -putting you in the driver’s seat as she takes you on a musical ride of imagery and diversity. With a kick ass band who knows how to lay down a groove (including Jasmine on bass), Jasmine Cain’s new album Locks and Keys gives hope to the future of rock n roll. With an unrepentant spirit, Jasmine Cain Band is ready for lift-off. Lucky for us, the lift-off is NOW.” – Mac, 97.1 RQQ – Nashville’s Rock Station, Music Director/Afternoon Radio Personality (11/08)

?I went to NAMM just looking to meet folks and let them know who I am. They took one look at my media book, heard my music, read the reviews, and immediately took me in as one of their artists. I?m so incredibly honored for their recognition of my artistry,? tells Cain. Jasmine?s music is powerful, alluring and diverse. Her bass and vocal chops evolved over the years playing bluegrass, country, rock, and power pop ballads, ever since she was eight years old.

Jasmine Cain?s shows are stadium quality performances, high energy, and wildly entertaining. The entire band is a cast of musical characters offering a tightly unique performance. ?In the twenty years that I have been promoting events the longest lines I have ever seen at a band?s merch area is at Jasmine Cain?s booth. The Jasmine Cain Band leaves the audience wanting more,? says John Green, Promoter for Easyrider Events, the world famous Broken Spoke Saloon, and the Lone Star Rally.

BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS REVIEW– Thursday post was great! I get more info from reading the posts than any other source. Looking forward to the changes to Bikernet, but it will be hard to make it better. “More exposure to gain more readers to give the sport more of a voice to try and hold the bastards, who want to take our fun away, at bay.” That’s all good.

The blog is good but I prefer the posts with more content. What about adding another post between Sun and Thurs? I know you’re overworked, goddamnit!! But who better to keep leading us through the fog?

The pics on Sun from the ‘glory’ days were great. Thought they would never end…

Ride hard!!

SEMA TRAINING SEMINARS TO KEEP BUSINESS STRONG–Training is critical, especially during today?s challenging economy. Everyone needs to do more with less in these tough times. To address these needs, the SEMA Education Institute (SEI) has enhanced its professional online training courses through a new agreement with Harvard Business Publishing*. The agreement provides SEMA members access to world-class business management training through the Harvard ManageMentor 10 program.

The Harvard program offers the most practical and engaging online resources available today for fostering management skills. The series addresses the full spectrum of issues faced by new and experienced managers alike. Harvard has collaborated with recognized business leaders, practitioners and experts to develop this exclusive program for SEMA members with the same practical step-by-step tools used by many Fortune 500 companies.

The ManageMentor 10 program offers 42 hour-long modules covering a variety of topics including: business-plan development, crisis management, finance essentials, hiring, marketing essentials, strategic planning, performance measurement and many more. Each learning module contains tips, tools, downloadable forms and worksheets for continuous use and flexible application. The modules are structured to guide the learner through the key ideas and concepts using real-world scenarios presented in an interactive audio and video format that provides instant feedback in a safe environment.

Typically, this curriculum is only offered to large companies that invest tens of thousands of dollars to provide training for their managers. SEMA has negotiated an agreement with Harvard to offer even its smallest member companies the opportunity to receive the same access to all 42 modules for the single, limited-time low price of only $199. For more information, and to get started, visit www.sema.org/harvard.

Oldcouple

UNCLE MONKEY TABLOIDS DISCOVERED FOR 2010–The thunder of the engine, the thump of the highway strips, the roar of the wind in our ears. They capture us, they envelope us, they hypnotise us. Mile after mile, road after road, a primordial heartbeat pumping to the rhythm of a great land. Even when we stop to fill up on gas and food it is still there, pumping, roaring, coursing through our veins. We talk about our bikes and what we want to do, where we want to go, but as soon as the words stop our souls are carried back to the road. Back to the warm sun on our skins, the wind in our hair, back to a mule deer feeding in a field, a bird bobbing on a swaying thicket, a gopher saluting us on the side of the road as we thundered by.

We don?t like to talk about it much less to try and explain it to someone who hasn?t ridden. But we all know it. We all feel it. It brings us together, makes us all part of a family, and makes us all one. Wherever you are reading this you know what I am talking about it. It is the road that brings us together. It’s what makes us different from everyone else. It’s what makes us the way we are.

The road conditions us to sense and feel the minute changes that are in this world. We feel the shift in temperature when a dark cloud passes in front of the sun. We feel the sting of mosquitoes and flies from a slough that most never realised was there. We smell the fields of corn and detect the rain in the air. We feel the temperature drop as we climb through a pass, note it warming as we make our way back down. We feel the wind rolling off of a minivan, the push of a semi going by. We know when the pavement is hard, when it is soft, when it is time to head home, when it is time to ride out again.

We become one with the road, with this world and all that is around us. We see the insignificance of ourselves and the importance of our actions. Because of this we feel when someone is down. We sense when someone needs our help or when they need us to leave them alone. We know when someone has had a good day, when they want to share what’s in their hearts. Not by their words, not by their actions, but by a sense that can?t be described, we notice. It is this bond, this spirit that brings us together until we are all brothers and sisters of a common mother – the road.
