NEW BILL PROPOSED IN JACKSONVILLE–TALLAHASSEE — A proposal to stiffen penalties for motorcyclists who ride recklessly or at high speeds touched off a debate in a state House committee.

Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, has proposed a measure that could lead to the forfeiture of violators’ motorcycles if they exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more or are charged with reckless driving. The measure also could lead to their losing their licenses to ride motorcycles for 10 years, if convicted.

Lopez-Cantera told the House Infrastructure Committee on Thursday that the proposal is designed to address high-speed stunt riding. He played a video from South Florida that showed motorcyclists buzzing in and out of traffic at high speeds and doing tricks such as popping wheelies.

He said such riding endangers motorcyclists and other people on the road.

“This has become a plague in our state,” Lopez-Cantera said.

But the measure drew opposition from motorcycle advocates, such as James “Doc” Reichenbach, president of ABATE of Florida Inc., a group that has long lobbied on motorcycle issues.

Reichenbach said the state shouldn’t single out motorcycle riders for increased penalties, as it also has problems with people in cars driving recklessly.

“This is a discriminatory bill,” Reichenbach said.

The committee did not vote on the bill Thursday, and Chairman Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City, said he expects Lopez-Cantera to make changes.

Lopez-Cantera has already scaled back the bill from an initial proposal that would have increased penalties for motorcyclists riding 30 mph or more over the speed limit.

His wife was really angry. She told him, ‘Tomorrow morning I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in less then 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!’

The next morning Bob got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway.

Excited and confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.

Bob has been missing since Friday.

HOW TO BUILD A LOW-BUCK BOBBER–Well, the aftermath of the Holidays is finally (kind of) over, There was a major lack of time to do anything, we closed the shop to enjoy Christmas, New Years and even the Three Kings (wise men) day which is still celebrated in Puerto Rico and many Latin American countries.

At last, the first copy of the book is in my hands, proudly, the product of so many late nights, is announced to be out by February 15th at every major bookstore and some other stores (like Target, Wallmart and such) of course it will be also available through the internet and at my website, I should be receiving a partial lot of my book in the next couple of weeks and will be available directly from me (I’ll humbly sign them if wanted to)

Ahh… the book is called How to build a Bobber on a Budget published by Motorbooks International and written by yours trully.

I really am not the right person to review my own book… But, it’s more or less, some of the tricks and techniques that I have used at the shop for so long, also how to use your brain instead of a Platinum card and a catalog to build a cool, reliable motorcycle.

There are many plans of cool rides in the upcoming year, plus some book dates at different events.

Since I did not have the time before I want to wish everyone the best year ever, as we all know, things can only get better and more so right after the next November…

We are planning on another Haiti ride by Fall…
