This week’s news got kicked off with a bang. The editor of Iron Works, Marilyn Stemp dropped out of the sky from South Carolina. Taber from Nash snatched her from LAX and hauled her to Hollywood natch, to see the home of the Perri Ink Cartel and Nash on Melrose.
Then I peeled out to Cerritos to check their small manufacturing plant overlooking the golf course.
They’re hanging out, hand-making leather bags and brass hammers, and their own line of cool handlebars. We will bring you more on their products shortly.
So this morning bright and early, Ted Sands pulls up to the headquarters on his completely Performance Machine transformed bagger, to pick up Marilyn. Are they headed to the desert for the No Colors, Laughlin River Run, oh hell no.
They peeled north to sip wine with the Hamsters at their wild all colors event in Paso Robles. I was going to follow them north, then head east into the desert, but I can’t support a no-colors event. Then I received a super secret call. A hush-hush appointment was set for Saturday. Could she be arriving? I’ll fill you in on Sunday in the Cantina Post.

1.Remove side cover.
2.Remove main power fuse.
3.Remove factory exhaust system (Retain stock O2 sensors).
4.Remove factory exhaust hanger.
5.Open package and visually inspect. (No warranty for cosmetics after system has been installed)
6.Install new exhaust bracket. 2 bottom holes utilize stock hardware. Top left hole uses stock bolt and supplies aluminum spacer. Torque all fasteners to factory specifications.
7.Install supplied exhaust gaskets.
8.Install O2 sensors into the new headpipe in the location they were removed.
9.Install muffler onto the header and loosely attach to bracket with supplied flange nut.
10.Check alignment of system
11.Tighten all mount points starting at the heads and moving rearward, checking alignment as you go.
12.Tighten muffler clamp to 120 in. lbs.
13.Clean system with glass cleaner to remove any oil and finger prints.
14.Install main fuse and side cover.
15.Start motorcycle and check for leaks.

‘SONS OF ANARCHY’ STAR CHARLIE HUNNAM TO HEADLINE IOWA GRAND MOTORCYCLE RALLY–Charlie Hunnam, popular star of the hit FX Network motorcycle drama ‘Sons of Anarchy’, will appear in two private ‘Meet & Greets’ and a special public ‘Meet & Greet’ session on Saturday, June 1, during the second annual Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally at Iowa Speedway in Newton.
The public ‘Meet & Greet’ with Hunnam, whose character ‘Jax’ is a hero to the thousands of devoted ‘Sons of Anarchy’ fans, is scheduled from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the track’s Newton Club. Admission is included with the purchase of a Saturday, June 1 Iowa Grand Rally ticket, but will be limited to the first 150 people requesting a special wristband on that day, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
While there is no additional fee for the ‘Meet & Greet’, Hunnam will charge five dollars per autograph.
Hunnam will also participate in two private ‘Meet & Greet’ sessions in one of the track’s VIP Suites, at 12:00 Noon and 2:00 pm on June 1, which will be limited to the first 60 people to sign up for each one-hour session. The cost for a private session is $115 per person, which includes gate admission for the Saturday rally, light hors d’oeuvres and exclusive access to Hunnam for photos and autographs, plus a special 8” X 10” photo of Hunnam.

CALIFORNIA OFFICIAL LANE SPLITTING GUIDELINES–Lane splitting in a safe and prudent manner is not illegal in the state of California. The term lane splitting, sometimes known as lane sharing, filtering or white-lining, refers to the process of a motorcyclist riding between lanes of stopped or slower moving traffic or moving between lanes to the front of traffic stopped at a traffic light.
1) Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 MPH faster than other traffic – danger increases at higher speed differentials.
4) Consider the total environment in which you are splitting, including the width of the lanes, size of surrounding vehicles, as well as roadway, weather, and lighting conditions.
5) Be alert and anticipate possible movements by other road users.
The Four R’s or “Be-Attitudes” of Lane Splitting:
Be Reasonable, be Responsible, be Respectful, be aware of all Roadway and traffic conditions.
Note:These general guidelines are not guaranteed to keep you safe. Lane splitting should not be performed by inexperienced riders. These guidelines assume a high level of riding competency and experience. Every rider has ultimate responsibility for his or her own decision making and safety. Riders must be conscious of reducing crash risk at all times.
Messages for Other Vehicle Drivers
1.Lane splitting by motorcycles is not illegal in California when done in a safe and prudent manner.
2.Motorists should not take it upon themselves to discourage motorcyclists from lane splitting.
– Intentionally blocking or impeding a motorcyclist in a way that could cause harm to the rider is illegal (CVC 22400).
– Opening a vehicle door to impede a motorcycle is illegal (CVC 22517).
It’s critical to let folks know the does and don’t of splitting lanes. The practice can save lives, time, and vehicles, if we all know how to handle the situation. –Renegade

WEEKLY GUN NUT REPORT–Last week California legislature passed SB-140 titled Firearms: prohibited persons. The bill approves $24 million to expedite the confiscation of the estimated 40,000 handguns and so-called “assault weapons” illegally owned by Californians. So what illegally possessed firearms are they confiscating, exactly?
The bill text, in rare form, is actually pretty easy to read and understand. I know, shocking right? At any rate, the bill is all about funding. The bill “allows the Department of Justice to utilize additional Dealers’ Record of Sale Special Account funds for the limited purpose of addressing the current Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS) backlog” to confiscate firearms from individuals that are listed in APPS.
APPS?
So what is APPS, and how do you get listed in the system? For those of you who don’t live in California, here you go:
Established in 2007, APPS cross-references criminal, domestic violence restraining order and mental health history records, among other prohibited category data, with records of all handgun owners and assault weapon and .50 BMG rifle registrants in the state on or after January 1, 1991, to identify those persons who have subsequently become prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.
So essentially, a fee that Californians pay when they purchase a firearm (called a Dealer Record of Sale fee) is being used to fund the confiscation of firearms of people who find themselves listed in APPS.
I’m not a big fan of this program or SB-140, not by a long shot, but it’s important to keep things in perspective, especially when it seems like politicians are coming after our guns every time we turn around. This isn’t flat out firearms confiscation.
That isn’t to say that this program is harmless, because it’s not. Now that the program has funding, I think it provides a framework that will absolutely be abused and used to take away firearms from law-abiding citizens, the only question is when. The biggest risk I see in the short term is the system being used to take away firearms from veterans who have been diagnosed with PTSD.
Let’s all hope that California isn’t that stupid.

CANADIAN INSURANCE RATE INCREASE HEARINGS–Well I think the SGI hearing went well. Hopefully the review board listen to
what I had to say and put task to SGI.
To prove me wrong they have to
discredit their own Traffic Accident Report from 2010 and prove their own President and CEO gave false information at the hearings this month. Sadly
the review panel is a political appointment so it is unlikely their will jeopardize future appointments and the fat cheques that come from them.
Today was the last day to submit so I gave SGI the least amount of time to
manufacture a lie.

UNCLE MONKEY BRINGS YOU THE BIKERNET CANADIAN WEATHER REPORT–Spring is in the air…at least I hope that is what that smell is. With the weatherman promising temperatures 20 degrees over freezing we may be getting back to some normal weather instead of the skiff of snow that was on my truck this morning.
This winter has been a lot longer than normal. There are a couple of bikes on the road but with 8 inches of ice encapsulating my garage I’m going to need a few days of warm weather before I attempt an entrance.
My garage is another problem that needs to be solved. My single car garage is cramped with tools, bikes, and parts and is one of the main driving factors for selling my house to get into something with a two-car garage. Unfortunately Mrs. Monkey dictated that I needed to take all my tools that I squirreled away in the house out to the garage so that the house was more presentable.
I complied knowing that it wouldn’t be easy. My overwhelmed garage is bursting at the seams. I can get the door open far enough to reach in and start pulling things out, so I can get the door open but that is the extent of it.
Somewhere in there is Snow White, partially disassembled waiting for me to finish rewiring her, a couple nights of work, if I could reach her. SGI has a bike up for bids, the reserve is still a tad on the high side to make any real money, that would be nice, but as I can’t even retrieve a screwdriver from my garage so I might have to pass.
With no reasonable offers on the table for our house I’m starting to look at building a garage. The plus is I can design it the way I want. The downside is finding someplace to store everything while it is being built and, well, its still in Saskatchewan the land of perpetual winter.
The Missus and I are stir crazy and scowl a lot. We seach the Internet for deals to escape to California and get away for even a short time. Until then all there is to do is watch the snow slowly recede from the buried patio furniture in the back yard.

Thank you for the time taken to do a very good review. My wife and I have just seen the RT Limited in the flesh and we love it. We have not test driven yet but we are intending to buy one in about 1 – 2 years in prep for our retirement. May I ask just one question. We intend to do 95% touring on highways and 5% on dirt roads. These dirt roads are good quality roads and not rough. If we take it easy will the bike handle it OK?

ALARMING NEWS ABOUT ANTIBOTICS–
Small wonder that antibiotics are becoming less potent: a new government survey has estimated that 50 percent of all prescriptions for oral antibiotics were unnecessary and that in 2010, the year studied, doctors were prescribing these drugs for 833 of every 1,000 Americans – that works out to prescriptions for four out of five persons per year.
The survey, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), showed that antibiotic use is highest in the South and Appalachia and that nationwide prescription rates were higher for young kids (those under 10) and seniors 65 or older. The lowest prescription rates were in the west, 639 per 1,000 persons.
This escalating rate of prescriptions is a major contributing factor in the evolution of microbes to resist the drugs, making the diseases these bugs cause harder to treat, the CDC authors wrote. The survey showed that the most frequently prescribed antibiotic agent was azithromycin, often used to treat bronchitis.
A glaring problem is that bronchitis is usually is caused by a virus, and antibiotics, including azithromycin, are ineffective against viruses. The study was published in the April 11, 2013 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
My take? These are very disturbing numbers. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics have steadily pressured bacteria to develop resistance to several classes of drugs, rendering them ineffective. In view of this growing problem, I advise reserving the use of these drugs for serious bacterial infections.
Never use them for viral upper respiratory infections, for example. Using them for acne isn’t very wise either (instead, try my anti-inflammatory diet, taking essential fatty acids and using traditional Chinese medicine). For less serious infections, I recommend trying alternatives to antibiotics drugs first, including rest and use of botanical remedies. A naturopathic doctor (ND) or a doctor of oriental medicine (OMD) can also be a good resource for alternative approaches.

VEHICLE COVERED: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle
WHAT WENT WRONG: Without question, in the world of classic cars, motorcycles, and insurance claims, there’s no loss quite as painful as a total loss – especially when the owner has a deep emotional attachment to the car. Add some red tape to the claims process, and that pain is magnified many times over.
In this case, the owner of a red 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle, her late husband’s pride and joy, stored the car in a detached garage along with three other vehicles. An electrical short in a spare refrigerator started a fire, which led to an explosion, and the garage and its contents were destroyed.
DAMAGE/LOSS: All four cars in the garage were burned almost beyond recognition. Hagerty paid the Chevelle’s $25,000 Guaranteed Value (minus a $250 deductible), but when the owner attempted to deposit the check, the bank required the consent of her husband’s estate.
The problem? While she had removed her husband’s name from the insurance policy, she had failed to remove his name from the Chevelle’s title. Now the couple’s son has been forced to go through the process of obtaining executor status again, which not only requires time but also involves attorney and court fees.
LESSON: Title your cars properly. Fixing an incorrect title can be costly and time consuming, two things that no one wants – particularly a grieving family. Also keep this advice in mind when you purchase a non-running car. Sometimes it takes longer than expected to make it road worthy again, and with no need for plates or registration, the title is an easy thing to forget or neglect.

A REAL RAT SPORTY GOES TO CHURCH….
Big-Twin snobs who think Sportsters should never have been invented will probably consider this motorcycle just another example of why not to admire Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycles.
I think this two wheeler is a precious jewel in the cap of motorcycling. Cory Thomas, owner and rider loves his motorcycle and rides it farther and more often than many of today’s “new breed” of rider (an unnamed motorcycle publication claims to be “written exclusively for the “new breed” of rider).
Cory rides this machine regularly to Church, the grocery store, around town, and all over the place, not caring a whole lot about the way the bike looks, but more importantly how it runs. Not “runs” like in drag racing, but “runs” as in will I get home tonight? The wiring is all out in the open for quick fixes, and the paint can be touched up using Krylon flat-black. Rustoleum would probably last longer, but why switch now?
How did I discover this jewel you may ask yourself. But don’t answer yourself or you really are schizoid. I discovered this jewel when I happened to pull in behind him on the road. Something was dragging so I got the riders attention and pointed out the dragging thing (taillight or something.)
That’s when the rat of the thing became apparent. This is a genuine rat. Iron Head Sportsters are considered Classics by a segment of the Harley-Davidson crowd, with “Rat Bike” Sportsters few and far between, although some urge us to believe all Ironheads to be junk. We hesitate to call this motorcycle junk, because we wouldn’t want to hurt the feelings of the owner, so we call it a rat.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON FIRST-QUARTER EARNINGS RISE SHARPLY–
Earnings Per Share Climb 33.8% to $0.99
Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) first-quarter 2013 diluted earnings per share increased 33.8% on higher motorcycle shipments and continued improvement in operating efficiencies, compared to the year-ago period.
First-quarter net income was $224.1 million on consolidated revenue of $1.57 billion, compared to net income of $172.0 million in the year-ago period on consolidated revenue of $1.43 billion. First-quarter 2013 diluted earnings per share were $0.99, compared $0.74 in the year-ago quarter.
“With our focus on continuous improvement throughout our operations and providing outstanding products and customer experiences, we have continued to deliver gains in Harley-Davidson’s financial and competitive performance,” said Keith Wandell, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. “The successful launch of seasonal surge production at our York assembly operations in the first quarter is the latest example of our efforts to drive greater efficiency and be even more responsive to the market.
“Thanks to the outstanding efforts of our employees, dealers and suppliers, we believe Harley-Davidson is well positioned to deliver on all the ways we serve our customers, generate strong results for investors and build a successful business for the long term,” Wandell said.
Dealers worldwide sold 54,254 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the first quarter of 2013 compared to 59,677 motorcycles in the year-ago quarter. In the U.S., dealers sold 34,706 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the quarter, down 12.7% compared to the year-ago period which the Company believes benefited from accelerated sales due to abnormally warm early spring weather in the U.S.
In international markets, dealers sold 19,548 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the first quarter, compared to 19,915 motorcycles in the year-ago period, with unit sales up 11.5% in the Asia Pacific region and 6.2% in the Latin America region, and down 10.8% in the EMEA region and 0.4% in Canada.
Industry-wide U.S. heavyweight new motorcycle (601cc-plus) retail unit sales decreased 16.5% compared to last year’s first quarter. The Company has adjusted its definition of heavyweight motorcycles to 601cc-plus from the prior definition of 651cc-plus, to better align with the current U.S. industry definition.
Harley-Davidson recently reported newly available U.S. demographic market share data for 2012 new street motorcycle sales (all engine displacements) showing the Company continued its market leadership in the U.S. among young adults 18-34, women, African-Americans, Hispanics and Caucasian men 35-plus.
According to the Polk data, in 2012, for the fifth straight year, Harley-Davidson was the number one seller of new street motorcycles in the U.S. to each of these groups. Sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the U.S. grew in each of these demographic segments last year, and Harley-Davidson sold nearly twice as many new street motorcycles to young adults as its nearest competitor in 2012.
“We believe our continued market leadership in these customer segments demonstrates the strong and growing appeal of our products and brand across generations and cultures,” said Wandell.
“In 2012, nearly four in ten sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the U.S. were to customers who are new to the brand.
Outside the U.S., two-thirds of sales were to customers new to the brand. And nearly six in ten sales worldwide were to customers outside our traditional U.S. base of Caucasian men 35-plus. We believe our strategy to expand our reach to new customers and market segments in the U.S. and internationally, while also growing the base, holds tremendous opportunity for Harley-Davidson’s future,” Wandell said.
First-quarter operating income from motorcycles and related products grew 33.0% to $276.8 million, compared to operating income of $208.1 million in the year-ago period. Operating income in the quarter benefited from higher motorcycle shipments, higher gross margin and lower restructuring costs compared to the prior-year period.
Revenue from motorcycles grew 15.9% to $1.15 billion, compared to revenue of $995.9 million in the year-ago period. The Company shipped 75,222 motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide during the quarter, in line with guidance and a 17.1% increase compared to shipments of 64,263 motorcycles in the year-ago period. In the first quarter of 2013, the Company launched seasonal surge production at its York, Pa. plant, which provides the flexibility to produce more motorcycles closer to customer demand during the prime selling season.
Revenue from motorcycle parts and accessories was $184.0 million during the quarter, down 7.5%, and revenue from general merchandise, which includes MotorClothes apparel and accessories, was $72.1 million, down 3.3%, compared to the year-ago period.
Gross margin was 36.7% in the first quarter of 2013, compared to 35.9% in the first quarter of 2012. First-quarter operating margin from motorcycles and related products was 19.6%, compared to operating margin of 16.3% in last year’s first quarter.
Harley-Davidson continues to expect to ship 259,000 to 264,000 motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide in 2013, an approximate 4.5% to 6.5% increase from 2012. In the second quarter of 2013, the Company expects to ship 80,000 to 85,000 motorcycles, in line with shipments of 83,502 motorcycles in the year-ago period. The Company continues to expect full-year 2013 gross margin of 35.25% to 36.25%. The Company also continues to expect capital expenditures of $200 million to $220 million in 2013
In the first quarter of 2013, Harley-Davidson incurred restructuring charges of $2.9 million, compared to restructuring charges of $11.5 million in the year-ago period. Upon the expected completion of restructuring in 2013, Harley-Davidson expects restructuring activities initiated since 2009 to result in one-time overall costs of approximately $495 million, including approximately $13 million in 2013. The Company expects savings of approximately $305 million in 2013 from restructuring activities initiated since 2009, rising to annual ongoing savings of approximately $320 million beginning in 2014.

HOORAY FOR FLORIDA–Only 49 more states to go!? Hooray for Florida !? I-95 and I-75 will be jammed for the next month or so with druggies and deadbeats heading North out of Florida, because this is the first state in the union to require drug testing to receive welfare!
Hooray for Florida ! In signing the new law, Republican Gov. Rick Scott said, “If Floridians want welfare, they better make sure they are drug-free.” Applicants must pay for the drug test, but are reimbursed if they test drug-free. Applicants who test positive for illicit substances, won’t be eligible for the funds for a year, or until they undergo treatment. Those who fail a second time will be banned from receiving funds for three years!
Naturally, a few people are crying this is unconstitutional. How is this unconstitutional? It’s a legal requirement that every person applying for a job has to pass drug tests in order to get the job, why not those who receive welfare?
Let’s get welfare back to the ones who need it, not to those who won’t get a job.

NEW SHOP IN THE HOOD—

On paper Altai, a new interior design and men’s apparel and accessories shop that opened its doors here last week, sounds straight out of “Portlandia”: It’s a high-end boutique run by a combination midwife-interior designer-landscape architect from the U.K. who also happens to dabble in custom furniture and high-end luxury menswear while her boyfriend builds bespoke motorcycles from the ground up in the back room.
But luckily for the city’s fashion-forward men and design junkies of both genders there’s no punch line — just a whole lot of cool new merchandise, some of which is in a stateside bricks-and-mortar store for the very first time.
The space, which consists of an uncluttered 2,500-square-foot boutique in the front and an equal-sized furniture design and prototyping space in the back — is the brainchild of Amaryllis Knight, a 36-year-old U.K. transplant who has lived in Los Angeles since 1998.
Trained as a doula, Knight is also a designer of landscapes, interior spaces, custom furniture — even wallpaper. And to hear her tell it, there’s nothing at all incongruous about her varied skill set.
“Landscape, interior design, delivering babies — it’s all the same thing for me,” Knight said during a recent tour of the store. “Being born into a connected environment is just as important as living in one.”
Knight describes a career path shaped by “growing up around architects” (her mother, Sabiha Rumani Malik, is a former director at Foster and Partners; her father, Andrew S.B. Knight, is a former editor of the Economist).
“I grew up in these Victorian houses with double-pane glass, so this is heaven,” she says, throwing her arms wide toward the front windows filled with SoCal sunshine. “And I was so captivated by the possiblity — the potential and the ability — to spend so much time outside and with no real division between inside and outside.”
This particular outside is located on an otherwise unremarkable stretch of West 3rd Street between Formosa and Cochran (next door to the Wine Hotel).
The inside of Altai (the store is named after a mountain range Knight drove through during a 2007 road trip from London to Mongolia) is a relatively spare and uncluttered space. But at the same time it seems to hold the particular electric charge of an unopened birthday present.
A $600,000 vintage motorcycle is parked near the front door. Another — this one bright red and sporting a sidecar — sits in the front window.
A handful of hanging racks line the painted brick walls. Neatly folded sweaters and trousers fill two immense tables in the center of the room, each one sturdy enough to display a Smart Car.
Make that a torpedo, actually. Knight, who designed all of the furniture in the boutique, says that what are now tables began life as torpedo bases. “I welded wheels to them to soften the look,” she said.
The racks and tables are filled with luxury sportswear and accessories by Christophe Lemaire, Raf Simons and Tim Coppens (all L.A. exclusives, according to Knight). There are also boxers from Sunspel, bird-print sweatshirts from AMI by Alexandre Mattiussi, and a wall full of luxurious leather bags by Want.
A particularly noteworthy line, and worth a visit alone since Altai is the sole U.S. store to stock it, is a U.K. label called Casely-Hayford. The collection of luxe, super-soft sportswear pieces — think shawl collar shirt jackets, linen-cotton blazers, drawstring trousers and bright fruit-salad-pattern shirts — is from father and son duo Joe Casely-Hayford and his son Charlie.
“Joe was the stylist and suit maker for the Clash and Lou Reed,” explained Knight. “And since 2005 he’s been the creative director of the Savile Row house Gieves & Hawkes. His son Charlie styles the likes of Nas and the XX.”
The cash wrap is a counter of glass and enameled metal that stocks an impressive array of smaller toys for boys — lighters, wallets and a blown glass slingshot with leather strap. There are also a bewildering number of backgammon sets to choose from, (Knight confesses she has a weakness for the game).
In addition to her own Altai brand, Knight’s furniture, industrial design and housewares exclusives for the L.A. area include the Issey Miyake and Artemide lighting collaboration, Benjamin Hubert, and limited-edition pieces by Paulo Mendes da Rocha.
And, for anyone who might have entertained the idea of going glamping but just couldn’t find anything high-profile and full-color enough, ALtai is also the first store in the U.S. to stock Field Candy’s limited-edition U.K.-made two-person tents printed to look like watermelon slices, circuit boards, leopard skin and the like.
Given Knight’s back story, the interior and furniture design part of the business certainly makes sense, but why menswear?
“I really like men’s clothes,” she said. “And I like to wear them myself. And from a design perspective mens[wear]is really interesting because it’s gone past the avant-garde, shock-factor novelty thing.
More men are genuinely interested in menswear.”

BIKERS SEEK JUSTICE IN FINES–
The organization is surprisingly effective at working the legislative system. They are called ABATE, which means either A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments or American Bikers Aiming Towards Education.
They go by both and they roared onto the grounds of the state Capitol with a mission to make the roads safer. First, they remember their fellow bikers who didn’t make the trip this year.
ABATE President Dan Fish says their goal is to make the road safer by stiffening the 80 dollar fines for people who injure others with a car. “What’s a life worth? How does that one accident affect families for the rest of their lives. Their sons. Their daughters.”
Just the announcement brought tears and condolences for these women from Ft. Myers. Nikita Turner lost her biker grandfather in December.
“Dale was riding a red motorcycle with the lights on, helmet on and a flag and the guy didn’t see him.”
“Dale has been in my life since birth. He cut my umbilical cord. I just wasn’t ready to lose him.”
“To their credit these bikers were among the first to seek a ban on texting while driving.”
Darrin Brooks from Naples told reporters, “and the reason for that is obvious. People are texting. Their eyes aren’t on the road, so they’re not looking to see what they’re doing.”
And one inside the state’s Capitol, it was clear that this group of lobbyists would not be lost in the crowd of suits and shinny shoes.
Even though death might occur in a vehicle-bike or pedestrian accident, the usual charge is simply failure to yield the right of way. This is the second year the group has sought tougher penalties when injuries are involved.
It would make more sense to have the funds go directly to the State’s Brain Injury Fund or something, as opposed to just going to their general fund!
Though I agree that people who cause injury to others with a vehicle through their negligence should be held responsible. What I do Not Agree with is the state making money from the Injury and or Death of their residents.
Any new bill should have money going to the victim and or their family and if that is not done interested parties should contact their legislators and ask them to vote against the bill until that is included.

SPLITTING LANES PASSED IN NEVADA–Nevada’s lane splitting bill passed the Nevada State Assembly yesterday, April 18th 2013 at 6:29 PM. The vote was overwhelmingly positive, with 34 yea, 4 nay, 2 excused and 1 absent – check out the full vote breakdown here.
This is very exciting news – the bill goes to the Nevada State Senate next, where hopefully the support will be just as strong. High five to Assemblymen Carrillo, Daly and Healey for introducing this bill, and kudos to the entire assembly for not falling for Assemblywoman Carlton’s fear of “motorcyclist’s guts end up all over the back of my car” tactics.

RISE IN MOTORCYCLE-RELATED DEATHS NOT DUE TO HELMET LAW—

A motorcyclist group said Thursday the uptick last year in Michigan’s motorcycle fatalities should be blamed on unlicensed cyclists, not a new law making helmet use voluntary.
More than half of the state motorcyclists who died in accidents in 2012 did not have a permanent license, American Bikers Aiming Toward Education or ABATE of Michigan said in a statement Thursday, one day after the first anniversary of the law.
Although the 129 motorcycle deaths last year represented an 18 percent increase from 2011, it was within the normal year-to-year fluctuation of fatalities experienced from 2005-2011, said Vince Piacenti of ABATE of Michigan. The average number of motorcycle deaths during the period was 120, he said.
“Fatalities in 2012 were 129, which fall within the normal range of variation and proves conclusively that the helmet-law amendment has had no adverse effect on motorcycle safety,” Piacenti said in a statement.
ABATE argues that stricter enforcement of licensing laws and better education and training are the key to cutting motorcycle fatalities. A motorcycle endorsement on a driver’s license is legally required to ride on public roads.
ABATE wants to ensure that motorcycle riders “without an endorsement face stiffer fines, and we also support limiting Temporary Instructional Permits to two per adult,” said Vince Consiglio, ABATE of Michigan’s president. “If you need more than two TIPs, you shouldn’t be riding.”

Bare Necessities Run by ABATE Local 27 Riverside–The Bare Necessities Run in an annual event to raise money and gather clothing for the Riverside Salvation Army. The event is organized and run by Abate Local 27 of Riverside.
For those whom are not familiar with what Abate is, it stands for American Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education, it is a motorcycle rights and safety organization run by volunteers they are open to anyone.
The run took place at its usual location, American Legion Post 79 in Fairmont Park. there were vendors selling jewelry, perfume, hats, cigars and motorcycle related merchandise, the Posts Taco Team was busy making and selling lots of tacos to feed the crowd which according to Greg Covel, Local 27 President and Executive Director for Abate of California said that approximately one hundred and fifty riders took part in the event.
Bare Necessities Run 2013 The largest group attending was the Geezers MC who also take a great part in making this event happened. Talking with some of the members of the Geezers MC they went on a ride to the Garment District in Los Angeles where they are able to buy more items for a given amount of money.
Other groups included Heartless SC, Heart -N-Soul MC, Molochs, Christian Motorcycle Association, Templars, Midnight Riders and Inland Empire HOG.

Photo credit: Donald Kline ..A raffle and tattoo contest was held in the last hours of the event and a few people took home some nice prizes, an unique twist in this years raffle, instead of calling out numbers and picking items at random several bags were set out on table and you put your raffle tickets into the bag for the prize you would hopefully win, the prizes ranged from gift cards, to signs to bottles of wine.
The weather was cloudy for the day, but a few riders managed to brighten the lives of others through their donations to the Salvation Army.

Driver for low speed CV adjustment. I chose this stubby straight blade screw driver because of the big plastic handle. It allows for more torque when removing the slow jet.
I had to grind this very slow as not to blue the
steel. As it got thin the process slowed way down!! Had to grind a little and cool with water. Well
worth it as it always removes the slow jet.
I use this for removing the slow jet and Idle mixture screw. Time consuming and very tedious work.

BIG WEEKEND APPROACHING—And I’m still machining wheel spacers for the Mudflap Girl FXR. I grabbed a fresh CV carb off the shelf and transferred all the Trock notions to it, then installed it. It immediately fixed the problem. I ordered a new easy adjustment screw from CV Performance. I was hoping it might arrive today.
Ray C. Wheeler wanted me to silver solder a dime to my existing adjustment screw, but I chose the pros at CV Performance.
So, what’s coming up. We are working on the Redemption road test piece, and you’ll get a kick out of it. I also have another Pan restoration episode from the Tail Gunner, and mentally I’ve started another Cantina Episode. Does that count?
