FIGHTING SUNDAY POST for January 21, 2018

Hey,

We are living through interesting times. They are perplexing times and in some respects I don’t get it. When the whole Global Warming threat kicked off so many folks gave into it, as if to say, “The oil companies have fucked with us in the past, I guess the regulators must be right.”

All the major players took a strange stance. The MIC and even SEMA just sort took on the notion that there was nothing they could do but negotiate with the regulators and pray for the best. And where were the oil companies during this era?

Now, when car companies and the whole motorcycle industry are struggling, they wonder and hire focus groups to find the problem.

And the media is complicit in the movement. Here’s another quote from a book published in 2008, Red Hot Lies by the “Climate Criminal,” Chris Horner:

Less alarming (or at least less useful) claims typically are of no interest (to our media). Little ink is spilled explaining how birds, fleas and trees produce more CO2 than humans, or that cows’ CO2 and methane emissions dwarf those from autos. Well, silly, we aren’t looking to regulate birds, trees or fleas!

So, are we going to fight back or go down with the ship? Let’s hit the news.

NEW PROJECT AT DEPARTURE BIKE WORKS— Another shrunk FXR project from Richmond, VA. They reduced the V-portion of the frame and shrunk the panels. Very clever. We will bring you more on this project.

LETTER FROM A READER–
I’ve talked to you on the phone twice, and we’ve exchanged a few emails, but it occurred to me that I’ve never thanked you for your service to our great country. So, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!! YOU ARE A HERO!!! How’s the weather in Cali? It’s getting cold here in central Louisiana. We’re supposed to get snow flurries today (Tuesday), and the temp is supposed to drop down to 15° tonight!

Crazy weather for Louisiana! I’m enjoying the hell outta my Bikernet Cantina sub. My favorite thing in the Cantina is the Life and Times of Bandit parts. I wish it could be like it was in the sixties & seventies, biker culture wise, hell, even the eighties!

My 72-year-old best friend, and mentor, says he liked the ‘60s biker scene best out of all the decades. I’ll be glad when I can get my health straightened out, so I can get my bike up. I may be going into a specialty hospital soon, for at least a month. Would enjoy hearing back from you, if you have the time.

Have a great day, keep the wind in your face, keep the shiny side up, stay below LEO’s & the Feds radar, enjoy every ride, and…….”DON’T LET THE BASTARDS GET YA DOWN!”!

I’m not a hero, but thank you. I keep fighting for motorcycling and freedom to build. Does that help?–Bandit

SAVE MOTORCYCLING BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for January 18, 2018

Another observation, the image of the couple with the Pan is flopped. I was sent down to the Viera VA clinic after many years of trying to deal with VA, I came home in ‘67 my brother in ‘68 were pretty much told to get lost. Anyway after 40 some odd years a partial diagnosis, PTSD and hearing loss but still cannot find missing records of being hospitalized twice .

I still believe agent orange had a lot to do with it, as a foot note my wife and daughter both ride.

STORY FROM THE GEARHEAD–

I hope you never stop editing or writing . Liked the old tune by Coe, that you put in your editorial this week . It reminds me when Texas Fred introduce me to David Allen Coe . He had been back from Viet Nam for many years and that is where he was introduced to him.

I bought several of his albums after that. That song I don’t have in my collection. To you young riders albums look like a flat plate you could eat of with a small hole in the middle.

Tex and some brothers of ours and our old ladies had plenty of fun and mischief in those days. Lost track of a lot of brothers and sisters over the years but that is what happens when you become a responsible citizen.

Take care goes out to Texas Fred, Roadey Terry, Brad, Nazi Mike, Wizard, Redheaded Lisa and Panhead. God bless us all that still ride and God bless David Allen Coe.

BIKERNET BOOK OF THE WEEK CLUB–
Here’s a couple of book reviews for ya. I may order the Orwell book once I finish the tomb I’m reading now and also look forward to your next installation of Chance Hogan.

Motorcycle Diaries

from the notes of Ernesto Guevara

I saw on the Bikernet site a few weeks back a reference to this book. I had read this account of the travels of the two adventurers a few years ago and thought I’d put my two cents worth in.

The story starts out as an account of the motorcycle journey of two young men around Latin America. The steed, an old Norton named La Poderosa ll provides the transportation albeit not for long.

The story taken from Ernesto’s notes is in my humble view more of a story of how a seed of ideology comes to fruition in a young man and shapes him. During his travels Ernesto, an educated man, sees the many ills and injustices in the world in which he travels. La Poderosa ll doesn’t make it but the ideals spawned during the adventure do.

The young man who originally sets out with his friend Alberto to tour the country side changes him and is the start of a development that creates the revolutionary Che Guevara. Whether you agree with his politics or not he had the balls to try to right the wrongs he saw around him, which in the end cost him his life.

Good read and much food for thought.

Here’s a good one.

The Old Man and the Harley

By John J. Newkirk

This book is a real good account of a young man’s journey across this great country starting in New York and ending in California. The account takes place in depression era US in 1939. Young Jack Newkirk sets out on a 1930 Harley VL to cross the country. He learns much about the machine as well as himself. He has several adventures and mishaps along the way, which made the man he became.

His son and name sake honors him by telling this story and also digressing a bit to tell the story of a cousin who is also named John Newkirk but is better known as Scarsdale Jack Newkirk, one of the original Flying Tigers of WW2.

It’s a story of a young man’s adventure with some interesting history thrown in.

NEWS FROM THE HILL – Lawmakers Talk AVs at Auto Show Plus Will the Government Turn Off its Lights?!

A gaggle of lawmakers were spotted in the Motor City this week (that’s Detroit Rock City for you KISS fans) including Reps. Greg Walden (R-OR), Fred Upton (R-MI), Tim Walberg (R-MI), and Debbie Dingell (D-MI). They toured the North American International Auto Show in order to determine, “How the American automobile industry is leveraging new technology to become a global industry leader in innovation and consumer safety!” Which is basically a fancy way of saying, “show us how these driverless car contraptions work and what you are doing to make sure they don’t go berserk and kill us all!” And while I don’t know that our friends on Capitol Hill got the precise answer to that question, I think its safe to say they are hedging their bets that automated vehicles aren’t just a lofty, pie-in-the-sky goal. In fact, GM’s self-driving Cruise AV, a car without a steering wheel or brake pedal, made its first public appearances at the show. GM hopes to mass-produce it for a driverless taxi fleet in a yet-to-be-named city that would launch sometime next year. The company last week filed a request with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to deploy the car, which doesn’t have human-centric means of control for steering, accelerating or braking.

Scared? Don’t be….at least not yet. We’re still here working on your behalf in D.C. making sure motorcycles are part of the equation when it comes to regulating this emerging technology. In fact, we even have some news on this front which will help hit our message home to lawmakers….scroll down for more.

I know I’ll get few hate emails on this, but as your eyes, ears and voice in D.C. I feel like you need to know the greatest and latest related to the government shutdown that everyone’s talking about. Does it have to do with motorcycles directly? No. But it does impact the work we do, the people we meet with and the effectiveness we have, so its worth a mention.

A number of rank-and-file House Republicans endorsed a plan Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) came up with which would fund the government through Feb. 16. This was not the plan many wanted. Instead they were trying to reach a longer-term deal, so Congress could put this to bed and get to work on some other important stuff (ahem – autonomous vehicles, cough-cough RPM Act).

BUT a certain alleged remark that may or may not have referred to an entire category of countries as “shit-holes” made this short-term fix a necessity. Why? Because of the alleged remark, Democrats are now saying the only-way-in-hell they would support a longer-term solution would be if Congress fixes what’s called the Dreamers Act.

This has to do with the legal status of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as kids. So wait…what does this have to do with a shutdown? Bear with me: a longer term deal couldn’t be negotiated so now Congress has to do some frenzied and fast negotiations to get a short-term deal (kicking the can to February) to keep the lights on. Literally. Government funding runs out on Friday.

So by the time you read this we’ll know if Congress played nicely together or if sh*t hit the fan. And what happens if it’s the latter? Well, a better commute for me for one thing! 850,000 government employees will be forced to stay home and watch reruns of The Price is Right until the lights come back on.

Other ramifications? No trips to national parks or zoos, no gun permits because the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms will close up shop and some other inconveniences.

However, “essential” employees will have to keep coming to work…but just without a paycheck. Except Congress. They’ll still get their paycheck regardless because that was written into the laws governing shutdowns. Super fair, amIright!?!?!?

Stay tuned for an update next week. If the government does indeed shut down, I’ll have no one to take meetings with! (though I may offer to buy them a round at the bar because that’s the decent thing to do…at least for the government employees I like)

EXECUTIVE & REGULATORY UPDATES – Drugged Driving is the New Drunk Driving

Acting NHTSA Administrator Heidi King this week said she intends to make drugged driving a top priority for her agency…the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

King said the recent increase in traffic fatalities is “unacceptable” and she wants to find out how drug use has contributed to that upswing. King is supposed to announce plans for a summit on the issue shortly.

King spent time Tuesday at the Detroit auto show pitching the idea to lawmakers to get their support. This issue has started to gain more traction within the Agency as more and more states start legalizing marijuana and many still struggle with how to detect and measure drug impairment.

Your MRF will be sure to watch closely as this develops to see to what extent, if any, motorcycles get wrapped up in this. (not I think you would because I am SURE all of you are perfect law-abiding, upstanding, boy scouts).

STATE NEWS – Proof That the West Coast is the Best Coast…

Only kidding! Sorry to all my buddies on the eastern seaboard! There was some truly outstanding news this week from Arizona and California where each state made progress on legislation to combat motorcycle profiling.

In California, a state legislator confirmed she would introduce a bill to address the issue. This will be a key one to watch, folks. California is the NUMBER ONE state with incidents of motorcycle profiling. In fact, according to last year’s national survey that the Motorcycle Profiling Project put out, 54% of ALL cases were reported in California alone.

Arizona is 4th with the highest incidents following behind Texas and Florida according to the MPP data I analyzed. And while I don’t have bill language in California yet, here is the link for the bill in Arizona that was just dropped:

Great work to both states!

MRF NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS – Senate Panel on Motorcycles and Autonomous Vehicles Announced

As I’ve reported in previous issues, your MRF has worked HARD to tell lawmakers that riders are concerned about self-driving vehicles. And to make our voice even louder, we’ve done a lot of these meetings with Harley-Davidson Motor Company.

We’ve been successful in getting the word out – so much so that the Senate Motorcycle Caucus has decided to hold a briefing on this exact topic in February. Lawmakers will gather together at 12pm on February 8 to discuss exactly HOW motorcycles and riders are being considered when it comes to the regulation of autonomous vehicles.

We’ve helped get a solid panel together with riders, researches, and reps from NHTSA and the like. Invitations have started to circulate, and the buzz is spreading. If you’d like to push your lawmaker to attend the briefing (or send his staff) send me a note and I can forward you the invite to make sure its on their radar. Shoot me an email at megan@mrf.org

Last but not least, when you read this Friday I’ll be on a plane to Lansing to speak at ABATE of Michigan’s conference. If you’ll be there, stop me and introduce yourself. I’ll even take you up on your offer to buy me a drink at the banquet – it will be my birthday after all! I’m excited to celebrate with the Michigan folks!

Until then….

BIKERNET BAD JOKE RELIGIOUS WING– Converting a Bear

A priest, a rabbi, and a minister decide to see who’s best at his job. So they each go into the woods, find a bear, and attempt to convert it. Later they get together.

The priest begins. “When I found the bear, I read to him from the Catechism and sprinkled him with holy water. Next week is his First Communion.”

“I found a bear by the stream,” says the minister, “and preached God’s holy word. The bear was so mesmerized that he let me baptize him.”

They both look down at the rabbi, who is wrapped in a body cast. “Looking back,” he says, “maybe I shouldn’t have started with the circumcision.”

LAS VEGAS BIKE FEST FOR 2018–
Here are some highlights of the changes:

· New Location for Rally Central! We were approached to move the entire rally to the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (DLVEC). Located at 3rd and Carson Street, across from the Golden Nugget and the D Hotel, the venue is ideal for an outdoor event. It is the venue where the MMA fights took place during the 2017 event, in case you were able to see that. We will take over several blocks adjacent to the DLVEC as well.

This move will take us into the heart of downtown, right off the Fremont Street Experience. We will have one main stage and one central area for all rally activities. We will still have the Rally West vendor location on the 3rd Street promenade at the Fremont Street Experience.

· New Dates – October 11-14, 2018! We are going to be a part of Power Sports Industry Week in Las Vegas with AIMExpo at Mandalay Bay, the Monster Energy Cup at Sam Boyd Stadium and Enduro Racing at the Orleans Arena.

· Lower Admission Prices! Rally tickets will be available for $15 for the weekend ($25 in 2017) and we will have FREE admission on Sunday. Discount coupons for $5 off admission will be distributed at other rallies and throughout Las Vegas.

· More Las Vegas! Instead of competing with the city and all it has to offer, we are going to bring more of a Vegas feel to the rally with more excitement and bigger and better entertainment.

I also wanted to let you know that we did eliminate the Artistry in Iron competition for 2018. We plan to make some changes to our Custom Bike Show to give more emphasis to that.

SAVE MOTORCYCLING BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for January 18, 2018

Back when I was just a boy the science was that the world was flat. Then the science changed and the world was round but the sun rotated around the earth. Then the science found that the earth did in scientific fact rotate around the sun and in good company.

So, science and scientific fact like most things tend to change. This is great for those who are politicians or write books on the subject. Always something new to work with. And that’s a fact.

Nice build, great combination of art, mechanics and function. You have your own style and it always shows. Appreciate the honesty in the write up as to how things do and don’t come together. NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT— This is a quote from a recent book, “Red Hot Lies” by Christopher C. Horner:
When Republican U.S. senator James Inhofe produced a list of peer-reviewed work by more than 400 scientists countering the “consensus,” the Times mentioned it only in a blog, where it was dismissed as “a distraction.”

But when fourty-four Baptists, led by a 25-year-old emiinarian, got relly worried about Man-made climate change, it was a newsworthy development…

These double-standards are legion: unseasonably warm weather is clear evidence of global warming, while exceptional cold is merely an anomaly. Warm weather and retreating glaciers are signs of warming; cool weather and advancing glaciers are signs of nothing.

THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB REPORT–
Aussie Govt claims up to 160 bikers deported

Media outlets are reporting almost 160 foreign-born bikers have been deported from Australia since new laws were introduced three years ago.

The push to deport bikers has been led by one time QLD cop and newly appointed Federal Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton.

It involves state and federal police working with various intelligence agencies.

Being an outlaw motorcycle club member or associate of an organization ‘reasonably’ suspected of being involved in crime is sufficient for a visa cancellation on character grounds.

“There’s no room in Australia for foreigners who involve themselves in criminal bikie gangs,” says Dutton

“These gangs are heavily involved in all sorts of criminal activity.”

Laws were amended in December 2014 to give the government greater powers to revoke residency for those who failed to meet minimum ‘character standards’.

Appeals are lodged against about 80 per cent of deportation orders.

“They (bikers) run standover and extortion rackets, manufacture and distribute deadly drugs, and are, in large part, responsible for the ice scourge, which directly results in home and business robberies to pay for the addiction,” Dutton claims.

“If non-citizens lead that life then I’ll cancel their visas and rid our country of them.”

 ORGANIZED--By
Charles Krauthammer – To N Y POST –

I do not understand how living in a country with its democracy established over 200 years ago, and now, for the first time in history, suddenly we have one of our former presidents set up a group called “Organizing for Action” (OFA).

OFA is 30,000+ strong and working to disrupt everything that our current president’s administration is trying to do. This organization goes against our Democracy, and it is an operation that will destroy our way of governing. It goes against our Constitution, our laws, and the processes established over 200 years ago. If it is allowed to proceed then we will be living in chaos very much like third world countries are run. What good is it to have an established government if it is not going to be respected and allowed to follow our laws?

If you had an army some 30,000 strong and a court system stacked over the decades with judges who would allow you to break the laws, how much damage could you do to a country? We are about to find out in America!
Our ex-president said he was going to stay involved through community organizing and speak out on the issues and that appears to be one post-administration promise he intends to keep. He has moved many of his administration’s top dogs over to Organizing for Action.

OFA is behind the strategic and tactical implementation of the resistance to the Trump Administration that we are seeing across America, and politically active courts are providing the leverage for this revolution.

OFA is dedicated to organizing communities for “progressive” change. Its issues are gun control, socialist healthcare, abortion, sexual equality, climate change, and of course, immigration reform.

OFA members were propped up by the ex-president’s message from the shadows: “Organizing is the building block of everything great we have accomplished Organizers around the country are fighting for change in their communities and OFA is one of the groups on the front lines. Commit to this work in 2017 and beyond.”

OFA’s website says it obtained its “digital” assets from the ex-president’s re-election effort and that he inspired the movement. In short, it is the shadow government organization aimed at resisting and tearing down the Constitutional Republic we know as AMERICA.

Paul Sperry, writing for the New York Post, says, “The OFA will fight President Donald Trump at every turn of his presidency and the ex-president will command them from a bunker less than two miles from the White House.”

Sperry writes that, “The ex-president is setting up a shadow government to sabotage the Trump administration through a network of non-profits led by OFA, which is growing its war chest (more than $40 million) and has some 250 offices nationwide. The OFA IRS filings, according to Sperry, indicate that the OFA has 32,525 (and growing) volunteers nationwide. The ex-president and his wife will oversee the operation from their home/ office in Washington DC.

Think about how this works.. For example: Trump issues an immigration executive order; the OFA signals for protests and statements from pro-immigrant groups; the ACLU lawyers file lawsuits in jurisdictions where activist judges obstruct the laws; volunteers are called to protest at airports and Congressional town hall meetings; the leftist media springs to action in support of these activities; the twitter sphere lights up with social media; and violence follows. All of this happens from the ex-president’s signal that he is heartened by the protests.

If Barack Obama did not do enough to destroy this country in the 8 years he was in office, it appears his future plans are to destroy the foundation on which this country has operated on for the last 241 years.

If this does not scare you, then we are in worse trouble than you know.

So, do your part.

MORE FROM DOWN-UNDER–
An Aussie bushman walks into a bar with a pet crocodile by his side.
He puts the crocodile up on the bar, then turns to the astonished patrons.
I’ll make all of you a deal. I’ll open this crocodile’s mouth and place my
manhood inside. The croc will close his mouth for one minute.

Then he’ll open his mouth and I’ll remove my unit unscathed. In return for witnessing this spectacle, each and every one of you will buy me a drink.

The crowd murmured their approval. The man stood up on the bar, dropped
his trousers, and placed his twigs and berries in the crocodile’s open mouth.
The croc closed his mouth as the crowd gasped.

After one minute, the man grabbed a beer bottle and smacked the croc hard on the top of its head. The croc opened his mouth and the man removed his jewels, unscathed as
promised.

The crowd cheered, and the first of his free drinks were delivered.
The man stood up again and made another offer.

All right everyone, listen up:
I’ll pay anyone $100 who’s willing to give it a try. Any takers?

A hush fell over the crowd. After a while, a hand went up in the back of the bar.
A blonde sheila spoke up: I’ll try… Just don’t hit me so hard with the beer bottle.

–Steve Bauman

I DON’T GET IT— But I’m just a grubby biker. In my younger years the media questioned everything the government spewed, which was correct. They asked questions and reported. Made sense. They understood the need for the first amendment and freedom.

Then came helmet laws and they no longer supported freedom. And now Global Warming that could regulate everything and they don’t question it, why? Are they afraid they might piss someone off?

Bikers aren’t afraid of anything. We fight for freedom no matter what.

Hang on for the SmokeOut report coming this week, techs from Bikernet Baggers, Trike Reports, new shop reviews, book reviews and reports from the Bikernet headquarters. And don’t miss the latest Cantina Episode, #78. Good god.

Ride free forever!
