Indian Motorcycle Dealership Open In Pompano Beach—Test Rides Available

The iconic U.S. brand Indian Motorcycles is back and coming to a dealership in Pompano Beach. A new store offering 2014 models of the heavyweight bikes officially opens this weekend, with “Demo Days” celebrations on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Festivities at Indian Motorcycle of Pompano Beach, at 5111 N. Federal Highway, include a fundraiser for the Big Bike Riders Children’s Foundation. At the Pompano Beach store, general manager Ron Catronio said some area residents already have pre-ordered bikes, largely men in the 35-to-64 age range. Some World War II veterans and seniors have stopped in to reminisce, including a 96-year-old who used to ride in Wisconsin. “The bike has its own personality and following,” said Catronio. “It’s almost like a romance factor.” Indian Motorcycle plans to reach 140 dealerships nationwide this year. Besides the Pompano Beach store that employs seven people, there also are Florida dealers in Miami, Daytona Beach and Ocala.   Advertisement

Warren Lane Builds Cool Bikes Too

Yes, the brother of Billy Lane, a bike builder know by many with quite a history, built this terrific bike now owned by Ray Llanes. Here’s a little history of the bike. The bike was ridden by Ray’s father-in-law, who had a bike shop in Miami in the ‘70s. It was owned by a club member and had come into the shop for work. But the owner ended up in prison for the long haul and never picked it up. The owner had told Ray’s father-in-law to keep it running, so he did, riding it regularly. Read more Advertisement

New survey reveals Americans fear E15 fuel may damage engines

A recent survey found that more than three-fourths of Americans fear that E15 fuel may damage car engines and fuel system components, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.  Also, more than two-thirds of those surveyed believe that using more corn for ethanol production could force up food prices, the AMA said. E15 is a fuel blend of 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline that the federal Environmental Protection Agency has approved for use in 2001-and-newer passenger vehicles. Ethanol is grain alcohol produced from crops such as corn that is mixed with gasoline to produce an ethanol-gasoline blend motor fuel. E15 is not approved for use in any motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, boats, lawn mowers and other small engines. Since 2011, the AMA has repeatedly expressed concerns to government officials and federal lawmakers about possible damage to the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs currently in use by the inadvertent use of E15, which is now becoming available at gas stations. The survey findings were released on Oct. 2 by the American Petroleum Institute, which sponsored the poll. The API is a national trade association that represents America’s oil and natural gas industry. Some 77 percent of registered voters are concerned that ethanol blends above a 10 percent level can cause severe damage to engines and fuel system components, according to the poll. Also, 69 percent of those surveyed said that using more corn for ethanol production could increase consumer prices for groceries due to a reduction in the corn supply for food, food products and animal feed. The survey was conducted by telephone between Sept. 19-23 by Harris Interactive. Pollsters surveyed 1,034 registered voters across the country. The survey has a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percent, which means that the results could vary by 3 percent either way

Norton Racer Goes For $100,000!

Auction house Bonhams said it sold a 1966 Norton 350 Manx racing motorcycle for £61,980, or about $100,000, during a sale in Stafford, England. The sale price, which was double the top estimate, is a new auction record for a Norton Manx. The sale also reflects the rising status of motorcycles, especially racing models, on the collectible market. British motorcycle maker Norton was famous for the Manx racing models it turned out from the late 1940s through the early 1960s. These bikes were best known for their success in the challenging, dangerous Isle of Man TT road race. They have also been sought for decades by collectors who race vintage motorcycles because they are competitive against other designs of the era. This particular bike was raced by Joe Dunphy and Keith Heckles with the famous tuner Francis Beart tweaking its engine to boost its performance.
