Mees Finishes Second on Harley-Davidson XR750; Baker Ninth on Factory Bike

Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew rider Jared Mees moved into the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season points lead after racing his Rogers Racing/Las Vegas H-D/Blue Springs H-D Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycle to a second-place finish at Hagerstown Speedway. The Grand National Twins main was won by Crosley Radios/Villa-Esparza Kawasaki rider Bryan Smith. Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Factory Team rider Brad Baker finished ninth. Baker qualified on the second row, but a great start put him into the lead pack in the early laps. Baker got sideways out of the groove on lap four and was able to regain control without crashing, but dropped back to 10th place. “The bike slid out on me there and I went into quite a tank slapper. I managed to save it, but lost a lot of ground,” said Baker, the defending AMA Grand National Champion. “The bike ran really well tonight, but we just missed on the set-up a little, and I think I made a bad choice on gear selection. I could not put the power to the track on the straights. I wasn’t hooked up as well as some of the other bikes.” Zanotti Racing/Moroneys H-D rider Kenny Coolbeth Jr. was on the pole for the 25-lap main and led from the start, opening a lead of about 1.5 seconds on second-place Smith. Coolbeth’s race came to a sudden end on lap eight when his motorcycle suffered a mechanical issue. Smith inherited the lead, with Mees in hot pursuit. For about 10 laps Smith and Mees raced wheel to wheel, as Mees was able to pull alongside Smith but never quite able to complete a pass. On lap 20 Mees began to fall off the pace, and Smith eventually won by 0.832 seconds. Montgomeryville Cycle Center Kawasaki rider Jake Shoemaker was third. “I […]

Ducati Wins Middleweight Division and Takes Two Open Division Podium Positions at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Ducati riders achieved the Middleweight Division victory and four of the five top motorcycle times of the day at the 92nd running of the historic Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. This year’s introduction of new rules and new motorcycle racing divisions, including the “Motorcycle Middleweight Division” and “Motorcycle Open Division,” brought with it a field of strong competitors challenging for top times. The introduction of the “Motorcycle Open Division” – which allowed fully faired liter bikes to compete in the same class as the defending champion Multistrada 1200 – made it the most competitive motorcycle class and the one in which the top five times of the day were posted. Lambert Fabrice, who competed on a Ducati 1098R, brought home the second fastest time of the day at 10:04.401, while Don Canet and Micky Dymond followed in close succession with lap times of 10:10.101 and 10:11.319 respectively aboard Ducati Multistrada 1200s. Bruno Langlois finished in the fifth slot with a time of 10:14.480 on a Ducati 1199 Panigale. The newly formed “Motorcycle Middleweight Division,” comprised mostly of fully faired middleweight sport bikes was ultimately won by Frenchman Eric Piscione, who dominated the division aboard a Ducati Streetfighter 848 with a time of 10:46.159. Since it’s inception in 1916, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has emerged as one of motorsport’s most spirited and formidable races, as riders face a 4,720 foot elevation change on grades averaging seven percent – all in times hovering around 10 minutes. The 156 turns leading to the summit challenged the field of veterans and rookies alike, though Ducati riders proved themselves once again at the “Race to the Clouds.”

2014 ABS Safety Recall For Harley-Davidson?

A Bikernet source just received a notice from Harley-Davidson of a safety recall. “Some 2014 Touring and CVO Touring models may have been assembled with front brake line in a position where it could become pinched between the fuel tank and the frame, either at original assembly of during subsequent service activity. If this condition remains undetected it could cause front brake fluid pressure to increase while riding, possibly resulting in a front wheel lock-up, which may lead to a crash. Harley-Davidson has initiated this recall to correct this condition in affected mortorcycles” The recall does not instruct the owner to “park and trailer” the ride into the shop. Estimate of repair time is one hour if the brake cables do not need replacing.
