NUTS SUNDAY POST for August 27, 2017

Wow,

Life is nuts, but what the hell, it continues and changes daily. Bikers get it. We enjoy freedom whether they like it or not. We’re still racing, riding and building cool shit, no matter what.

My Grandson’s Dyna is almost complete. We met with the Bennett’s Crew yesterday and they will perform a final check and tune Franky’s bike hopefully late next week.

Then we will throw Dr. Hamsters rebuilt Knucklehead frame on the lift and get to work building him a bobber.

My Panhead paint, by Mr. Deny, could be finished next week and we met with Bob Bennett about our engines. I need a clean set of Panhead rocker arms and supports for my engine and a set of pushrods. Know anyone?

The Doctor’s Panhead engine has rebuilt heads, but the cases need to be stripped and then his engine can go back together.

Next week is already nuts. I need to finish my Sturgis story and write a forward for Teach’s book. I have something scheduled for everyday of the week.

Pirelli Dominates Pro Motocross at Ironman National– Jeffrey Herlings Uses Scorpion MX for Perfect Sweep in U.S. Debut

Pirelli tires, and FIM Motocross World Championship rider Jeffrey Herlings, of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, made a dramatic statement at the final round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Series in Indiana. A surprise entry, Herlings made a striking first impression in the series after adapting to a new bike, set up and rules of the series.

As the official tire of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross series, Pirelli supported the Dutch rider with SCORPION MX32 tires for his Factory KTM. Herlings earned the top qualifier, Moto 1 and Moto 2 wins on the way to his first overall victory in the U.S.

Herlings used SCORPION MX32 tires to emerge victorious via 1-1 moto scores in the 450 class.

Herlings adapted quickly to the tough terrain of the Ironman track. With the SCORPION MX32 Mid Soft front and SCORPION MX32 Mud rear selected for the opening moto, Herlings nearly had the holeshot behind the point’s leader of the series. Before the first lap was complete, the No. 784 bike was out front and never looked back, winning by over eight seconds.

For Moto 2, Herlings opted to use SCORPION MX32 Mid Soft front and rear tires as the track conditions deteriorated. Herlings faced a difficult race after crashing to avoid a down rider on lap one forcing him to rejoin the race in 39th position.

Nevertheless he charged the field and by the penultimate lap found himself fighting for the top position. After an error from the race leader, Herlings seized the opportunity and ended his heroic day on the top spot of the podium.

The second 450 moto witnessed the multi-time World Champion pass 38 riders on his way to victory.

“I came here to prove that I could run up front with these guys and was 100-percent all day,” said Herlings. “I faced a lot of adversity riding a bike setup that was different, but I was able to count on the Pirelli’s to be as consistent as they are in the MXGP. We tried a few different tire options and in the end, the Pirelli Scorpion™ MX32™ performed with the consistency I expect from my racing in Europe.”

Following his victories, Herlings will head to Jacksonville, Florida for the sole round in America at the U.S. Grand Prix at WW Motocross Park.

“It was great having Jeffery stateside for the final Pro Motocross and his impressive results speak for themselves,” said Josh Whitmire, Pirelli Motocross Manager, USA. “We race what we sell and sell what we race. Today proved the SCORPION™ MX range of tires wins at highest levels of racing – both in MXGP and here today in American Pro Motocross.”

IT’S SUNDAY, LET’S TAKE A QUIET MOMENT AT THE BIKERNET TEMPLE–

I went into the confessional box after many years of being away from the Catholic Church.

Once inside the Confessional, I found a fully equipped bar with Guinness on tap On one wall, there was a row of decanters with fine Irish whiskey and Waterford crystal glasses On the other wall was adazzling array of the finest cigars and chocolates.

When the priest came in, I said to him, “Father, forgive me, for it’s been a very long time since I’ve been to confession, but I must first admit that the confessional box is much more inviting than it used to be.

“He replied, “You moron, you’re in
my side.”

5-BALL RACING PANHEADS IN THE STURGIS MUSEUM–

Thank you so much for allowing the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame to display your bikes.

Also, thank you for your patience with my delayed response. I realize now that receiving five new bikes days before the Rally is not something I’ll want to do in the future. (Live and learn).

TRIKE ENTHUSIAST REPORT FROM AUSTRALIA–
I have just read you promo on the Rewaco Trikes in USA. What fantastic print .Well done to the writer. I own Touroz trikes in Australia . These Trikes are made by Rewaco in Germany and are re badged in the factory Touroz . They are marketed in Australia as Touroz Trikes.

The article you have produced would be marvelous print and would give us a unique platform to further advance the brand Touroz (Rewaco) In Australia. Would you be prepared to permit a rewrite for us to use? Obviously we would only do this after you have approved the name changes and deletion of pricing for obvious reasons. Thank you Col Clarke Touroz Trikes Australia.

THE STRIKING BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for August 24th, 2017

NEWS FROM THE AMA? Michigan raised registration and training fees. The additional fees, 2 bucks per, will go to the motorcycle safety education program, while some fees will fund a new awareness program.

BEWARE and MONITOR CLOSELY – Florida did this and there were serious issues with how the money was spent, who got some of it and what else it was used for.

If you live in Florida I suggest you watch closely who is trying to get these funds now and what their past record is.

Starting a new organization – New Name – Same people as old motorcycle rights organization that got funds and then audited for misuse.

If any state collects fees for education it should be used for that and Nothing Else.

NEW MODEL COMMENT– This (shown on a Road King) is the headlight that they should have utilized for the Fatboy – not that modernist job. Give me that locomotive style headlight nacelle any day over what they cooked up for the new Fatboy. I imagine that you could incorporate it, or even an option straight out of the P&A catalogue.

Anyway, I’m aware that I may be coming across too critical on the new line. I don’t mean to be. I really do believe that overall – not having ridden a one – that the effort to revamp the whole line from the ground up and even incorporate some Dyna-ish models with actual Softail frames was monumental, successful effort, and a huge engineering feat to be sure.

I guess what I’m at odds with is some of the styling cues of them alien-insect lookin’ lights and some of that silly 240 rear tire stuff. (I think that maybe a 200 or a 210 rear tire is the max for these type of bikes as both handling and aesthetics suffer otherwise).

I would never want to put a 240 on my bike although kits do exist. My re-modding of the suspension/swingarm/fender/belt-cover to do the 200mm 17 years ago was the max in my opinion at the time, and still is. So, it’s not like I’m jealous or anything like that. But yeah. I’m sure these bikes are all fantastic and superior in every way to the previous generation.

Also, its not like I’m in the market for a new bike, nor are you I recon, it’s just interesting to sorta evaluate the goings on in the bike segment. Indian might haffta pour on some more coal now.

Ride Free,

NEWS FROM THE NMA– Criminal Traffic Court is the Best Option.

Whose side are we on anyway?

The NMA objects when cities lower the traffic court bar, downgrading routine moving violations from criminal to civil offenses while also issuing lesser fines and eliminating points against defendant driving records.

Again, why would we do that?

To answer those questions, look no further than the example of jurisprudence gone wrong set by New York City’s Traffic Violation Bureau (TVB). The TVB traffic courts afford no real due process for defendants. They are administered by judges who are Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) employees.

There is no prosecutor or negotiation, just the ticketing officer’s testimony. Short of the officer not showing up for the hearing or the judge not believing the cop’s account – don’t hold your breath – the odds are stacked heavily against the defendant.

One of the judges who oversee the Staten Island traffic court is so reviled for his rude, dismissive and often hostile attitude toward defendants as well as his 80+ percent conviction rate that residents have organized a petition to ask New York Governor Cuomo to remove him.

As one New York traffic attorney put it, “There is no mercy or intelligence in TVB. I’ve seen truckers get eight equipment tickets. If the cop puts them in NYC criminal court, showing proof [of equipment repair] is ground for dismissals. If the cop puts them in TVB, guilty x $500 each charge with two weeks to pay.

“The rules of Administrative Traffic Tribunals do not mirror those of a Court, and usually specifically state that Court rules of evidence, hearsay, and discovery do NOT apply. Most motorists think they are in a Court, when, in reality, they are in a DMV office. Notably, you don’t need to be found guilty “beyond a reasonable doubt”. Most Tribunals use “clear and convincing” which is legally a much lower standard.”

New York City, and particularly Staten Island, might seem like an extreme case but it is not unusual for traffic court in many cities across the country to conduct administrative, not criminal, proceedings. The presiding magistrate might well be a local attorney contracted by the municipality to mete out justice on its behalf. Police are frequently accused of enforcing ticket quotas (oh sorry, “goals”) but one has to wonder whether some judges in these administrative courts have ticket revenue quotas.

When traffic ticket recipients are faced with TVB-type courts where critical defense rights like evidence discovery or even making motions to the judge are tossed aside, defendants quickly learn that they are probably facing a lost cause. Throw in the additional inducements of lower fines (but a higher capture rate by the city) and no driving record points and the disincentive to fight a ticket is complete.

Give us a traffic court where the rules of a criminal proceeding allow defendants to challenge the merits of the charges against them using the full toolkit of due process rights afforded by the U.S. Constitution. It is the only way to keep traffic court judges from becoming not much more than money collectors.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WEEKEND WORD FOR TARDY STUDENTS—

Funster: (fuhn-ster)
noun
1. a person who creates or seeks fun, as a comedian or reveler.

QUOTES
Capello is not a funster. The former Italian winger Roberto Donadoni once remarked: “I think he would have made a good prison guard.”

— Tim Adams, “The many faces of Fabio Capello,” New Statesman, June 7, 2010

ORIGIN
The origin of the English suffix -ster, as in funster, is the Old English suffix -estre, which was used to form feminine agent nouns corresponding to masculine agent nouns in -ere, e.g., bæcere “baker” and bæcestre “female baker” (the source of the family name Baxter). Even in Old English the suffix -estre was used to form masculine agent nouns; thus we have today the doublets weaver (with the masculine suffix) and, with the originally feminine suffix, the archaic agent noun webster (source of the family name Webster).

By the late 16th century, the suffix -ster acquired a humorous or disparaging sense, as in rhymester (along with the neutral youngster). Punster dates from the end of the 17th century and may have been the model for funster.

The suffix nowadays is mostly humorous or disparaging as in gangster (late 19th century), the model for bankster, which also dates from the late 19th century. Funster entered English in the late 18th century.

MORE WORDS FROM THE SALT—
Bob Bennett, of Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach was on the salt for the SCTA speed trials a couple of weeks ago. “The salt was very dry with ruts and potholes,” said Bob. “We couldn’t make solid passes.” Very few records were set.

He’s running in the 175 mph range and hoped it rained between their race and this weekend. “With some rain the salt will soften, they can drag the course and have much more solid runs.”

“You get what you get in Bonneville.” It’s constantly changing.

FOR SALE–
This 1941 Indian Sport Scout (45 inch; 750 cc) Flat Track Racer is from
the Hobo John Estate.

This was Hobo’s prized possession!

This Flat Tracker was acquired from John Roccio in 2007. John Roccio was a famous rider and original member of the Booze Fighters M.C. and 13 Rebels M. C.

This motorcycle is rumored to have come from his brother Ernie Roccio, a #1 plaque holder who died in 1952 in a speedway incident. Both of the Roccio brothers were incredible riders and mechanics. This bike was taken to Lee Standley, in Ventura CA, for a rebuild sometime in the late ‘90s.

Pop Standley, one the best Indian engine builders and tuners, built this engine and set it up with Bonneville components and specifications. The engine has yet to be run in correctly only having been used on one parade lap at the Ventura speedway. This Scout Bobber was one of Hobo John’s most expensive purchases and as such his greatest possession.

Information about this motorcycle provided by Bob Nichols and Tom Lovejoy and from Hobo’s file on this motorcycle.

Questions and discussion are always welcome.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN–
Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church’s morals, kept sticking her nose into other people ‘s business.

Several members did not approve of her self-appointed activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town’s only bar one afternoon.

She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing it there WOULD KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING!

Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn’t explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing. Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred’s house…walked home…and left it there all night.

L.A. GUNS Hits Sturgis 2017

Badass!!!

Salt lake City, UT

NEVER DULL AROUND HERE—
I can’t decide what the hell to do next, but first the Ack Attack didn’t fair well on the Brazilin salt, but some of the other riders pulled amazing times at over 11,000 feet on one of the most amazing salt flats in the world. I’m sure we will hear more.

I nearly finished my Sturgis 2017 Saga. I’ll post it next week or die trying. Next week could be monumental on the projects front. Mondays always surprise me. My list is dialed in for the week by Sunday evening, and then Monday hits with more projects, more content, more action.

Let’s see if I can launch my Sturgis Story, finish Franky’s bike and take it to Bennett’s and rough out Teach’s book forward. Then I need to write another Dyna rebuild tech story, and if my Panhead paint arrives we need a story about the finished roller.

But what the hell will surprise me on Monday, get in the way, offer opportunities, you name it.

Hang on, but in the meantime ride free,
