Hey,
One of the wildest years in my life and I’m riding to Sturgis next week, maybe with three other terrors on two-wheels. One guy lost his job a couple of days ago. He only had the job for three weeks. He’s pissed.
I’ve packed and repacked for the Badlands run on my Indian three times. I have a mission to pack light. Get this: I pack to the brim, then the morning I take off I get dressed. When you ride out at the crack of dawn you wear layers of shit, sometimes long underwear, a shirt, a sweatshirt, then your jacket.
That night when you find a place to crash and undress you discover a problem. Where the hell are you going to put the clothes you wore. Once, on my way to Milwaukee for an anniversary, I shipped extra dirty clothes back home in a Fedex carton. Some 30 years later will I get it right? Who the hell knows.
Let’s hit the news. I apologize for the old jokes, but what the fuck, let’s party.

QUICK, BUY A LAKESTER, CUT OFF ONE WHEEL AND COMPETE WITH THE SALT TORPEDO– 1962 Belly Tank Lakester “Something” for sale.
This front-wheel drive 1962 dry lakes racer is a largely complete belly tanker with a turbocharged Pontiac four-cylinder and a lengthy, partially-documented competition history. Completed in 1962 by a team reportedly consisting of Burbank firefighter Jerry Silverstein along with notable hot rodders Julian Doty and Arnold Birner, the racer was named “Something” and run at SCTA dry lakes events in various forms until 1989.
The car was stored until Silverstein’s passing in 2007, then displayed at the Los Angeles Roadster Show and sold to a private California collection. The seller first noted the car during its final runs on his first trip to Bonneville in 1989, and was able to purchase it a year ago with plans to recondition and run it again.
Lakester describes an open-wheeled salt flats racer often created from a surplus WWII aircraft drop tank, which has been augmented here with an extended tubular frame covered with custom-fabricated panels. Red paint dates to several different eras of the car’s competition history, and wears a patina of long-term exposure to high speeds, hasty repairs, and general use.
Bonneville Nationals tech inspection stickers from 1987-1989 remain affixed along with race numbers, D/Lakester class identification, and rescue instructions. 15? disc wheels are still wrapped in vintage Firestone slicks. The large opening in the rear is a storage tube for the parachute.
The engine is a Pontiac Tempest four-cylinder which was first run in naturally aspirated form with a “stage four” head built by Birner. The impressive-looking turbocharger setup seen above was added somewhere along the way. The powerplant is mated to a three-speed manual transaxle with quick-change gears that drives the front wheels.
Though partially disassembled, the drivetrain remains present and is thought to be largely complete. The car does not run or drive currently, and after 27 years of sitting the seller recommends a thorough inspection and update of fueling, braking, and other systems if it is to be run again in the SCTA lakester classes.
An included display frame contains mementos including six time slips from the Bonneville Nationals. Among them is a slip showing a 1986 run of 224.753 mph through the 4th mile.
The car is sold with its original hand-built trailer, which has recently been fitted with new lights and tires.
“Something” is pictured here in its earliest days on the salt flats. A folder containing further historical photographs and assorted memorabilia is included with the sale, along with a collection of miscellaneous parts. The car will be sold on a bill of sale in lieu of a title.

NEWS FROM HELEN WOLFE– I planted wildflowers from a bag purchased at the hardware store promising to attract butterflies and bees. I tossed the seeds out on Memorial Day then watered hard dirt and what may have been weeds for weeks and began to wonder if something would grow. I don’t always know weed from flower, so this “wildflower” hands-off concept works for me.
Then they began blooming like crazy after Independence day. I think that is a Cosmos in the photo although it could be Coreopsis or Mallow.
As for the spider, I didn’t see it until I took the close-up. Its not as large as it appears, maybe the size of a half coffee bean. It’s a female, probably known as the Goldenrod Crab Spider. There is a Whitebanded Crab Spider which is similar and both can change colors from yellow to white.
The males are very small and look totally different. To paraphrase the description, “It is an ambush hunter, lying patiently in wait on flowers for an insect to come within striking range. This species can conquer surprisingly large prey like bees and butterflies, seizing a victim in the embrace of its first two pairs of legs.
So I planted flowers purported to attract butterflies just to lure them to their demise. Nature’s a bitch ain’t it? There’s also a mouse spider listed but if it’s big enough to capture one that old saw “live and let live” may go out the window – unless it actually captures mice.
Nature is great – as long as it doesn’t crawl on me and stays outside we’re good.

Hell’s Angels WORLD RUN in Cripple Creek–Visit by 300 bikers creates mixed feelings about club’s controversial past.
CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. –
They’re considered an organized crime syndicate by federal officials and now the Hell’s Angels motorcycle club is in Cripple Creek for its annual gathering.
“I think of them in California back in the 1960s when they were notoriously known,” said resident David Donatto. “But I think they’ve toned it down quit a bit since then.”
Local authorities hope so, and are ensuring the club’s visit is peaceful by assigning 15 Cripple Creek police officers and 40 officers from five other agencies to patrol the town.
Between 200 and 300 club members had arrived by Monday and they plan to be in town through Thursday, mostly gathering behind the Wildwood Casino.
Cripple Creek Police Chief Mike Rulo said there has been no trouble since the bikers began arriving last weekend.
“We’ve had a few verbal warnings for minor issues related to traffic,” he said. “And really, that’s about it.”
Cripple Creek City Administrator Ray DuBois said club leadership contacted town officials several months ago about the visit and to plan it out.
DuBois reflected on the club’s past connections to crime and violence, and on some public criticism that the visit wasn’t widely publicized.
“We intentionally tried to keep the visit low-key to avoid raising concerns too much,” he said. “Clearly, they (Angels) have a reputation that precedes them. But based on the facts of looking at the previous annual (gatherings), there’s been a very small percentage of any kind of incidents.”
Kevin Werner, Wildwood’s vice president and general manager, said lodging in town is sold out for the week.
“They tip well, they’re spending money, they’re putting money into the economy,” he said. “We normally aren’t sold out in the middle of a week. So for us, it’s a good group.”
But some remain uneasy about the club’s presence in town.
“A couple of the casino workers have stated that business is slow because of people being afraid,” said Lana Martin, an employee at The Rocky Mountain Canary general store. “But they’ve been polite and courteous.”
Club members declined to be interviewed.
Personnel from the El Paso, Fremont and Teller County sheriff’s offices, Fountain police and the Colorado State Patrol are providing the additional security.
Next month, Cripple Creek welcomes another biker group as 7,000 visit for an annual salute to honor military veterans.

MAYBE NOT SO WILD WEST STATESIDE— Despite several high-profile police and mass shootings, Americans are living in one of the safest periods in recent history. Since 1991, the murder rate has plummeted to a record low of 4.5 murders per 100,000 people, down from a high of 10.2 in 1980. There is about half as much violent crime in the U.S. today as there was 25 years ago.

BAD COPS REPORT– Cops mistake Krispy Kreme glaze for meth.
ORLANDO — A Florida man told the Orlando Sentinel the he was arrested and brought to jail after police in Orlando mistook a few flakes of donut glaze in his car for bits of crystal methamphetamine.
Daniel Rushing, 65, said in an interview with the newspaper that he had just dropped off a neighbor for chemotherapy when he was pulled over on Dec. 11, around 1 p.m. Earlier, he had eaten a Krispy Kreme donut, he said.
The officer spotted “a rock like substance on the floor board where his feet were,” according to a police report obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.
She and other officers debated whether the donut glaze was crack cocaine or meth, finally concluding it was the highly addictive crystalline stimulant that has ravaged communities across the country.
The police report noted that Rushing told police it was Krispy Kreme donut glaze, but he was arrested and held in jail for 10 hours on a charge of possession of methamphetamine with a firearm, according to the newspaper.
A state lab later concluded that the glaze was not an illegal drug, and three days later the charge was dropped.

JAY LENO JOINS FORCES WITH VETERANS CHARITY RIDE FOR SECOND YEAR– Leno to be honorary chairman for 2016 new year-round motorcycle therapy program
Comedian and host of Jay Leno’s Garage, Jay Leno, will serve as honorary chairman for Veterans Charity Ride and its new year-round motorcycle therapy program. Leno first became involved with the organization during its inaugural ride last year when he hosted veterans at his garage in Los Angeles.
The Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis will kick off again this Saturday, July 30. Leno, a longtime motorcycle enthusiast, will support the veterans as they ride from Los Angeles to the 76th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. The ride provides motorcycle therapy to veterans as an outlet for post-traumatic stress (PTS) and other challenges associated with assimilation back to civilian life.
“This is the second year I’ll be supporting the Veterans Charity Ride, and I’ve already learned so much from interacting with these courageous men and women,” said Leno. “I’m very thankful to be part of such a worthwhile and life-changing event with heroes who share my passion for cars and motorcycles.”
In addition to Leno, actor Mark Wahlberg, another motorcycle enthusiast, has shared his support for Veterans Charity Ride. This year, Wahlberg created a personal greeting video, as well as a series of videos, announcing his support of the program and showing his gratitude to veterans for their service.
“I’m so inspired by the brave men and women I’ve met through Veterans Charity Ride, and it has been an incredible experience to work alongside them on such a great cause,” said Wahlberg.
Joining the veterans for the launch at LA. City Fire Station #77, 9224 Sunland Blvd, Sun Valley CA 91352 on Saturday is Danny Trejo, iconic actor, motorcycle enthusiast and veteran supporter.
“I am honored to be at the launch of the Veterans Charity Ride. These veterans have given so much to this country, and I am happy to support them as they take off for this life-changing ride,” said Trejo.
Founded by veteran Army paratrooper Dave Frey and Emmy-award-winning director Robert Manciero, Veterans Charity Ride, along with main sponsor Indian Motorcycle, treats veterans to the ride of a lifetime. During the 1,776-mile ride through the western United States, the participating wounded and amputee veterans not only ride together but also come together to share their experiences with one another. The ride ultimately serves as a mechanism for them to begin to heal, de-stress and find emotional balance through the brotherhood of riding. Recently designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Veterans Charity Ride will broaden its commitment to veterans with year-round support as an outlet for their stress, and create a way for them to bond with other veterans.
This year, the ride will make six stops, including Las Vegas and Denver, before arriving in Sturgis for the weeklong rally and its festivities. During the rally, the veterans will partake in the ultimate Sturgis experience, which includes riding as special guests during the Buffalo Chip’s Freedom Celebration Ride.

HILLARY and Establishment Democrats Embrace Gun Control at Philadelphia Convention–
If there was any uncertainty about the animosity Hillary Clinton and the elites of her party have toward America’s gun owners, those doubts were conclusively resolved by this week’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, PA. Again and again, the convention’s organizers made sure the issue of “gun violence” was front and center, even though – with more guns being sold than at any time in American history – the U.S. homicide rate remains at a historic low.
President Obama’s “fundamental transformation of America” has been so thorough and dramatic in other ways that it seems America’s gun owners and outdoor sporting traditions are virtually all that remain of a country many remember from childhood. No wonder, then, the “gun lobby” – Clinton-speak for NRA and its millions of members and supporters – was the subject of so much attention and abuse.
Let’s not mince words. Hillary Clinton does not believe in the Second Amendment. She does not believe in the U.S. Supreme Court decision that recognized a fundamental, constitutional right to have a firearm in one’s own home for self-defense. What she does believe in is the confiscatory gun control policies of Australia, a regime that so demonized and abused gun owners that a territorial “public service announcement” even mocked them with the specter of a prison sentence should they fail to comply.
That’s the Hillary Clinton and national Democratic Party of today. How would they behave if they exercised authority without the restraining hand of a strong opposition party and of grassroots organizations like the NRA to hold them accountable? Look no further than Australia and Great Britain, where private ownership of firearms for self-defense has been effectively abolished, or even California, where every legislative session brings ever more hackneyed and superfluous gun control to suppress lawful firearm ownership.
But wait. Weren’t newspapers reporting that Hillary Clinton won’t “repeal the Second Amendment”? Isn’t that what she said fifty minutes into her monotonous, droning acceptance speech that seemed to promise American voters everything and nothing, from every point of view, all at the same time?
How much more does it need to be said? Hillary Clinton – infamous across the political spectrum and amongst broad demographics for her dishonesty – never speaks with more duplicity than when talking about the Second Amendment.

Senate Anti-Gunner Spins Latest Clinton Debacle–
Anti-gun zealot Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) sure can keep a straight face when he’s evading hard questions that reveal his and his allies’ flaws of judgment and character.
A case in point occurred in June, after Murphy led a Democrat filibuster aimed at using an ISIS-inspired attack upon nightclub patrons in Orlando to force the Senate to vote on gun control restrictions that anti-gunners have been demanding for years.
Asked by ABC News’ Jonathan Karl why he was pushing so adamantly for restrictions that wouldn’t have prevented the Orlando crime or others like it, Murphy responded, “we can’t get into the trap in which we are forced to defend our proposals simply because it didn’t stop the last tragedy.” He might as well have said, “don’t make us prove our case, just give us what we want.”
Another case in point occurred this week, when Murphy tried to deflect attention away from the substance of emails, released by Wikileaks, in which some Democrat Party officials, including Rep. Debbie Wassermann Schultz, then the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, discussed how to deny the party’s presidential nomination to Sen. Bernie Sanders, in favor of their preferred candidate, Hillary Clinton.
Sanders’ supporters, understandably upset that establishment Democrats had plotted against their candidate, booed Wassermann Schultz off the stage at the Democrat National Convention on Monday. The shameless Murphy was then trotted out to try to change the subject. On Fox News with Bret Baier, Murphy said, “What people should be angry about is that we have mounting evidence that it was the Russian government that [hacked the emails that Wikileaks leaked].” As if the identity of the hackers somehow would change what was said in the emails and make everything rosy with the Sanders crowd.
One can only imagine how Murphy will explain the latest revelation in that story: After Wassermann Schultz was forced to resign from the DNC because of her pro-Clinton machinations, she took a job with the Clinton campaign, as Clinton described it, “to gain ground and elect Democrats in every part of the country” and “to serve as a surrogate for my campaign nationally.” Furthermore, Wassermann-Schultz’ replacement at the DNC, Donna Brazile, is a longtime Clinton operative, having worked on Bill Clinton’s presidential campaigns in 1992 and 1996.
One hopes Americans will remember Murphy’s propensity for informational discombobulation the next time he lectures them about the kinds of gun control laws to which they should agree. He’s about the last person anyone should turn to for a straight account on any important issue.

QUICK, KEEP THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY WIDE OPEN ON SUNDAY– A man is dining in a fancy restaurant and there’s a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He’s been checking her out since he sat down, but lacks the nerve to talk with her.
Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket toward the man. He reflexively reaches out, grabs it out of the air, and hands it back.
“Oh my, I am so sorry,” the woman says as she pops her eye back in place.
“Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you,” she says.
They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they go to the theatre followed by drinks.
They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he shares his. She listens.
After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful time.
The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy is amazed. Everything had been SO incredible! “You know,” he said, “you are the perfect woman, are you this nice to every guy you meet?”
“No,” she replies. . .
“You just happened to catch my eye.”

I’m sure we can all agree that this can be a bogus way of petitioning and CT might not have a worry in the world over this. But, motorcyclists are concerned here.
One idea some of the CMRA Board has discussed is simply trying to have the petition removed. That’s why I’m reaching out to all of you.
Doing a search on change.org, I found the following states have had this come up (out of 124 petitions that had the word “helmet”…I have to admit, I “signed” one from India requesting to repeal the helmet law they just put in place in February…my husband told me to focus on the US – I couldn’t resist, the commentary was interesting! This also taught me that once you support one, I couldn’t seem to take my name back off of it—it was a good test run!):
Kentucky, May 17, 2016 w/1,534 supporters
Wisconsin, March 7, 2016 w/ 73 supporters
South Carolina has two, one from March 2, 2016 w/46 supporters and the 2nd July 12, 2016 w/19 supporters
Texas, November 14, 2015 w/20 supporters
Delaware, August 25, 2015 w/81 supporters
Dante Ibanez of Stamford, CT is the author of the online petition. He has changed his name on the petition to “Dan rock” within the past 24 hours. As I write this email, there are 142 supporters. 75 of them made comments. Of those 75, only 25 comments were supporters from CT 12 were from foreign countries and 38 were from other states in the nation.
A few CMRA members were sharing it on their Facebook pages (Lord only knows what Mr. Ibanez’s Facebook messages must’ve been like for the past few days?). We asked them to ease up on spreading the word because even though many are free choice riders, someone on their friends list would probably beg to differ with the choices they make and support a helmet law. Insulting him while he is mourning simply fuels his fire as well.
At the bottom of the petition, there is an option to “Report a policy violation”. Change.org offers their own little version of five options to select from.
I’ve used all three of my email accounts to complain. I remember selecting an option with one email account that said “Infringes on my freedom”, with that, you had a limited amount of reasons why…I felt forced to use “defamation”. His misquoting of references with the link to the IIHS website was one thing. Others have picked apart his letter in many other ways as well. The part that he talks about his friend forgetting his helmet has the pro-choice regular helmet users wound up with comments like, “Forgetting your helmet is like forgetting your wallet!”
The active CMRA Board members and I agreed that this attempt to get the petition down was harmless to the friends and family in mourning and a quiet simple first attempt at dealing with this since none of us had ever seen anything like this before. There was also the idea of creating our own to reflect opposition to his petition. It was decided that slowing down, watching, and waiting may be better than using the same knee jerk reaction he did in creating his petition. I promised to reach out to all of you as well. Session doesn’t open until January, so we have a bit of time.
I don’t know if this is an “…ignore it and it will go away…” situation or not? Any advice or ideas are appreciated.

Rarely do funerals and celebrations of life “not” become a spiritual awakening. Each of us in reflecting upon our memory banks, know that this is true again and again.
For me yesterday and today, it’s for Timothy Talford, a 24 year old Army Sargent, Afghanistan Veteran tragically killed, under mysterious circumstances. He leaves behind a wife and child due in November.

Launching the KAWASAKI Team Green Program– Thirty-seven years ago the starting gates at amateur motocross events were full of red and yellow bikes, but not many green ones. So learned Kawasaki sales and marketing manager Chuck Larsen and district manager Dave Dewey after a visit to the Ponca City, Oklahoma races in 1979.
The reason wasn’t that Kawasaki had no racebikes to offer, because the KX line was already in its sixth year. The root cause, Larsen learned, was simply that there weren’t enough hop-up parts, specialized tuning knowledge or committed riders to make the KX bikes widely competitive. Excited by new possibilities, after the races Larsen and Dewey formulated the basic idea for the Team Green program– right there in a rental car heading to Wichita.
Further research conducted by ad agency J. Walter Thompson helped define Team Green’s mission, including using amateurs to help develop future products; before long, the first KX™80 motorcycle was in the hands of young racers for evaluation. Under the management of Dave Jordan, the Team Green race team officially debuted at Ponca City in 1981, right where the idea had begun. It was an enormous launch party of sorts, with a fleet of KX bikes for sponsored riders, trucks and work stations, and plenty of parts and technical support all present. That weekend, Team Green changed amateur motocross for good.
Then as now, the mission of the Team Green racing team and its support program was to help amateur racers succeed, and thus permanently connect them to the Kawasaki brand.
Jetting or sparkplug issues? Technicians were on it. Bike not hooking up? Let’s try this tire or gearing. Suspension need adjustments? The Team Green staff had answers.
Predictably, it didn’t take long for the distinctive Kawasaki Lime Green colored bikes to multiply on the starting gate and podium. But there was a twist, because while assistance was primarily intended for Kawasaki riders, Team Green trackside support would also help riders of other brands. This may seem counterintuitive, but the rationale was simple: Make Team Green the home for every racer wanting to excel.
Over the years, Team Green race team members have included Billy Liles, Jeff Emig, David Bailey, Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto and many others. At various times the series included women’s motocross, ATV and off-road racing too.
This year, Team Green is supporting 50 local, regional and national amateur motocross events for riders aboard the KX65, KX85, KX100, KX250F and KX450F motorcycles. Find out more at www.kawasaki.com/racing/team-green.
MRF Report for Kansas–A lot has happened here in Kansas the last few weeks. Unfortunately, all I have to report is not good news.
Larry Weaver 66 of Pittsburg Kansas was returning home from the smoky mountains on his 2013 Harley-Davison Street Glide on June 26, 2016. He checked into Days Inn in Sikeston Mo, and called his wife he would be home the next day.
He was found in a cotton field with massive trauma to the head as well as several fractured ribs, other injuries consistent with a severe beating, and his death was ruled as a homicide.
Three suspects are in custody at this time and his motorcycle was recovered by the police. A walk around by investigators, plainly showed visible blood evidence. This happened to someone from where I live. Larry did what everyone of us would have done. If you see someone trying to steal your motorcycle, call 911, your motorcycle is not worth dying for.
On July 10th 2016 Ronald Barber 35 of Meade Kansas and Sarah Adkin 32 of Russell Ks. Lost their lives when they crashed on a curve and hit a pole on K23 Highway near Meade KS.
On July 18th 2016, We lost Dave Mann. David Sherwin Mann passed away at his home in McClouth. He was 67 years old. Dave was a maintenance mechanic for TRW(Schlumberger) for 32 years and retired in 2009.
He was president for ABATE of Kansas from 1981 to 1991 and at the time of his death the chairman for the Mid south Mile and at one time was the Treasurer for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation for four years. He was the Santa for ABATE district 11.
His wife Noriene of 43 years was always by his side. Dave went on two bus trips to Washington D.C fighting for our motorcycle rights. Dave was a real Freedom Fighter and be missed by us all.
Finally good news as ABATE of Kansas heads toward the 41st Annual National Labor Day Rally on Sep. 2 through the 5th at Lake Perry Ks. I’m also looking forward to the Meeting of the Minds September 22nd though 25th 2016 in Oklahoma City.
Look Twice Save a life the life you save will probably be your own.

BACK TO RUN PREPARATIONS— It’s a run, challenging, creates drama with some ol’ ladies. Never a dull moment.
I’m scrambling through re-packing once more today, and through all the paperwork I’ve collected regarding the run and events at the rally.
My cute Wyoming connection has reached out and sent weather reports. Need to check air pressure in the tires today and maybe top off the gas tank. Rich told me, “All recent bikes run with about 40 pounds in the rear and 35 in the front.”
Hang on and ride free forever,
