GREAT NEWS BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for July 16, 2020

Hey,

Life is amazing. We’re in the middle of a Pandemic and J&P had their best single day sales record in the history of the company. And now J&P is owned by another company.

Get this, boat sales have gone through the roof. It’s one way a family can play together and not run into nasty crowds. One manufacturer launched their new models way before the end of the year.

Motorcycles have a similar blessing, that’s why Rich is having a banner year at American Biker in Charleston, SC, and Junior, at Lifestyle Cycles in SoCal is kicking ass in Orange County, California. It’s about embracing what’s available. A brother has an event magazine. No events, no business, but that’s not the case. He’s going to start covering underground events. He’s also going to interview big event promoters about their struggle and what they need.

Hell, Scott Jacobs was making bank on Cruise line art auctions. That’s gone for now, but Scott, Sharon and their daughters opened a brewery restaurant and bakery in Deadwood and they are kicking ass. There doesn’t seem to be any Covid around here. It’s amazing.

Cruise ships don’t need to set idle. Hell, one cruise ship could hold three separated conventions at the same time and stay in dock. Safety measures on one of those massive ships could be a breeze because of the compartments. Everything would be completely contained.

But riding is the best. Feel free, in the wind and social distancing is not a problem at 90mph.

Let’s hit the news:

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.

Bagger Nation Pre-Wired Monkey Bars–Paul Yaffe’s Phoenix, Arizona based Bagger Nation’s Monkey Bars program is popular with all touring riders, including Baggers of course, and with the company’s original Monkey Bars for 2014 – present Street/Electra Glide and Ultra Classic now available “pre-wired”, expect them to stay that way – “Monkeying around has never been easier!”

Pre-wired Monkey Bagger Bars for 2014-present Street Glide/Ultra Classic
Shipped direct from the Bagger Nation factory, the pre-wired Monkey Bars come with both plug and play CAN bus control harnesses and connectors installed. A pull wire is also installed on the throttle side, making the twist grip throttle sensor exchange painless.

The Bagger Nation solution eliminates the need to buy extensions, and the pre-wired option retains the OEM premium quality twist grip throttle sensor and comes complete with internal switch wires and connectors installed. These bars are compatible with the H-D heated grips.

When changing stock bars to Bagger Nation’s 8 and 10 inchers, there is no need for new hydraulic brake and clutch lines, but replacements will be needed when installing the 12, 14 or 16″ Monkey Bagger Bars.

They are made in steel, are drilled and have a gloss black powder-coat finish and have a 1 1/4″ bar diameter with a 1″ clamp and grip area diameter, 4 1/2″ wide clamp area (knurl to knurl), 8″ end rise/height and 15″ center width (inside to inside). The overall width is 36″ with a 9″ pullback/sweep.

Pre-wired OEM Monkey Bars for 2015-present Road Glide

Also seen here are Bagger Nation pre-wired OEM replacement Monkey Bars for 2015 – present Road Glides. They also have both plug and play CAN bus control harnesses and connectors installed, H-D heated grip compatibility, throttle side pull wire and retain the OEM twist grip sensor.

With these stock replacement applications, the 10 inchers don’t need new hydraulic brake and clutch lines, but the 12, 14 and 16″ options do; also, on 2015 and later Road Glide Ultras and some CVO Road Glides, the purchase of the standard control clamps from a H-D dealer will be required. Available chrome or black with 1 1/4″ bar diameter, 10 1/2″ center width, 1 1/4″ clamp area bar diameter with 4 1/2″ knurl to knurl clamp area width, 1″ grip area bar diameter, 10″ end rise/height and 10 1/2″ inside to inside center width.

BILTWELL NEWS– #operationnumbnuts 2021

JD’s Adventure Shovel–Ready for Anything
We’ve moved our Arctic Circle trip to 2021 but one of our favorite riding buddys JD Sansaver is ready to go right now! Follow the link to see some details on the bike and check out the video bike feature.

We’ve decided to postpone the Operation Numbnuts trip to the Arctic Circle until 2021. With COVID-19 not showing any signs of abating any time soon and the Canadian border still closed, it just made sense. We could’ve taken the ferry back instead of riding through the Yukon and BC, but that would cost a fortune and eliminate some of the best riding areas we were really looking forward to. Most importantly, it’s not the most responsible thing for a bunch of us to roll into the small towns and villages in remote areas along the way, so we decided to shelf it for another 11-12 months.

Most of us are ready to go, but JD has probably done the most prep on his bike in anticipation of the trip. He pulled the pan engine out and swapped in the trusty cone shovel from his chopper. Then he built the windscreen complete with “doped” canvas just like vintage airplane wings were made back in the day. He hand-made the custom rubber/leather tour pack bag, made sure his fly-fishing rig had a mount, fitted up a front fender for the first time and he’s good to go!

He’s way ahead of the game for next year, so who knows what crafty old JD will think up to add on to this awesome machine over the next few months…

5-BALL LEATHERS TESTIMONIAL–
I got my leather shirt in today! Thanks so much man, it’s so nice. I appreciate the goodies you threw in as well. Hope to meet you sometime. Have a good one in Deadwood.

NAMZ Lighting Splice

NAMZ is ALL about making your life simple and sometimes too simple. Our latest NAMZ exclusive product is something that founder Jeff Zielinski was not too keen on in the past due to always wanting to keep it 100% accurate and using only OEM products. So our new Lightning Splice’s are definitely not OEM but they are indeed a low cost quality wiring connection sure to make wiring a snap!

After a lot of testing, we have finally produced a product that we would put own name on, easy to use, with (4) wiring configurations, simple to service/remove and heavy duty enough to stand up to the most aggressive rider. These splice connectors, using a sharp copper contact make a v-cut into each wires insulation gaurenteeing a solid connection. Simply pop open the hinged door on the splice, insert the wire(s) and press firmly down, even using a set of pliers or needle nose for a perfect crimp.

Be on the lookout for many wiring options to include the new NAMZ Lightning Splices to make all your wiring jobs easy and still done the right way!
Check out our Lightning Splice’s for yourself!

LIFESTYLE CYCLES DEAL OF THE WEEK– 2015 Harley-Davidson® FLHR – Road King for $16,995.00

SEE IT HERE: https://www.lifestylecycles.com/default.asp?page=xPreOwnedInventoryDetail&id=9016171

Features May Include:
Project RUSHMORE – Control
Here are some of the innovations Project RUSHMORE led to: the Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS, the Daymaker™ LED headlamps and fog lamps, brighter Tour-Pak® lighting, brighter turn signals, brighter brake lights, and a steering head with stiffer front forks. Locked-up tires are now history even when there’s wet pavement. We’ve made it feel even better to lean your way through a turn. Now you can see better. And we’ve made you more conspicuous to the cage-driving public. Because one thing we all agree on is this: bikes that work better make riders who ride better. Take a ride. See how good you can be.

Air-Adjustable Suspension
With air-adjustable suspension that comes standard, you can dial in your ride to accommodate heavier or lighter payloads, battle unexpected road conditions or simply set it to how you like to roll. The lighter the load, the softer you can go by decreasing the air pressure a bit, or increase the air pressure for a more firm ride. A convenient air valve is located between the saddlebag and rear fender for quick adjusting. It’s all about rider and passenger comfort and setting your bike to fit your taste—the easy way.

Brembo® Brakes
Confidence. Control. High-performance dual disc Brembo® brakes offer consistent stopping power at all speeds. The 4-piston front and rear caliper with dual front rotor brake system is state of the art and top of the line. It’s just another way The Motor Company puts a high level of detail into their bikes to give you peace of mind throughout your journey.

Reflex™ Linked Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System
No doubt about it, there are times when you need to haul things down in a hurry. And you don’t get to pick those times. Or decide whether or not they occur when you’re on a flat, smooth, dry, perfect stretch of pavement. That’s why our touring models feature the Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS. ABS turns a locked-up front wheel or a rear wheel skid into a relic from riding’s history. And the front and rear brakes are electronically linked to provide exactly the right amount of brake to each tire no matter what the road condition is. No matter how good you are, this will make you a better rider.

Twin Cam 103™ Engine Innovation
Fire up the Twin Cam 103™ engine and feel the low-end torque unleashed. Thanks to the lightweight piston design, delivery of the added power is more refined than ever. Then put your foot on the shifter and feel how the engine and Six-Speed Cruise Drive® transmission were designed to work together. Six speeds. A strong driveline and strong internal parts. Low routine maintenance. And a low cruising rpm couldn’t feel better.

OLD BECOMES NEW AGAIN AT DIME BAG LEATHERS—Years ago, I produced and sold these watch bands in Easyriders under the IRS name. We used IRS because the IRS was fucking with us. Recently Adam, who fell in love with working with leather talked to me about expanding his line, so I sent him a sample. I also sent him a sample of our IRS leather wallets. Hang on for those. Here’s his report.

First prototype is done. A few modifcations on the next one and I’ll get you the three piece set, along with the cellphone holster. Gonna make some cool pieces for sure. What do you think with the photos?

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE AND S&S CYCLE TO RACE AT INAUGURAL
‘KING OF THE BAGGERS’ INVITATIONAL AT LAGUNA SECA

Armed with the Indian Challenge & Piloted by Road Racing Champion Tyler O’Hara, Indian & S&S
Take on An Entire Field of Harley-Davidsons

Indian Motorcycle, America’s First Motorcycle Company, and S&S Cycle today announced a collaboration to race an Indian Challenger at the inaugural Drag Specialties King of the Baggers invitational at Laguna Seca Raceway. The modified Indian Challenger will be piloted by the highly-decorated racing champion Tyler O’Hara.

Among the 14 teams invited to the first-ever King of the Baggers race, S&S is the only Indian Challenger entry. Set to face off against a field of 13 Harley-Davidson baggers, the appropriately-named Indian Challenger boasts superior out-of-the-box performance, including a best-in-class 122 horsepower, an inverted front suspension, and a hydraulically-adjustable FOX® rear shock.

“When the Indian Challenger was released last October, it set a new standard for performance-oriented, stock baggers and offers the ideal platform, from which to base our race modifications,” said Paul Langely of S&S. “That said, we’re leaving no stone unturned when evaluating the modifications needed to be successful at Laguna Seca.”

At the helm of the S&S-modified Indian Challenger will be road racing veteran Tyler O’Hara. A highly-decorated, and seasoned rider, O’Hara brings a diverse racing background – having won titles in supersport, supermoto, motocross and flat track racing. O’Hara also brings significant experience at Laguna Seca.

“I’m thrilled to not only be racing in the King of the Baggers event, but to be piloting the only Indian Challenger in the field. It’s an incredible opportunity for me, and I expect it will be a ton of fun,” said O’Hara. “The Challenger is a remarkable machine in its stock form, but I know the S&S team will be working its magic to give us the best chance to be successful come race day.”

“Just like the rest of the racing community and motorcycle industry, we cannot wait to see 14 baggers ripping around Laguna Seca,” said Gary Gray, Vice President – Racing, Technology and Service for Indian Motorcycle. “That said, we’re extremely proud to be the lone Indian Motorcycle in the field, partnering with our friends, the elite innovators at S&S.”

The King of the Baggers event will be part of the MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at Monterey on October 23-25. The inaugural race will join the premier MotoAmerica Superbike, Supersport, Liqui Moly Junior Cup, Stock 1000, Twins Cup and Heritage Cup racing.

Facing a field of nothing but Harley-Davidsons, King of the Baggers serves up a compelling extension of Indian Motorcycle’s Challenger Challenge program, a mobile demo tour and dealer test ride program that encourages motorcyclists to test ride the Indian Challenger, head-to-head against the Harley-Davidson® Road Glide® Special.

“We’ve seen incredible consumer response to the superior features and benefits of the Challenger when compared directly against the Road Glide,” said Gray. “King of the Baggers takes that comparison to an entirely different level, as we face off against the field at Laguna Seca.”

FREEDOM RECOGNIZED–Missouri Governor Signs HB1963T – Including Helmet Repeal

This afternoon, Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed legislation that would modify the current helmet law in the “Show Me State.” The new law, which will go into effect August 28, 2020, allows motorcyclists to ride without helmets if they are 26 years of age or older and have medical insurance.

Freedom of Road Riders Legislative Coordinator Amy Allmon said “Persistence actually pays off, on Tuesday July 14th at 1:30pm Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed our helmet modification bill. Freedom of choice in Missouri!” When asked for a reaction, MRF Chairman of the board, Kirk “Hardtail” Willard had this to say, “The Motorcycle Riders Foundation celebrates today with the bikers of Missouri on their victory of freedom of choice. It’s incredible to realize the State Motorcyclist Rights Organizations have spent nearly four decades pursuing their freedom. Given today’s political environment this is truly rarified air. Ride free Missouri.”

Congratulations to the Freedom of Road Riders, ABATE for Missouri and all those who never quit in the fight to let those who ride, decide!

About Motorcycle Riders Foundation
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) provides leadership at the federal level for states’ motorcyclists’ rights organizations as well as motorcycle clubs and individual riders. The MRF is chiefly concerned with issues at the national and international levels that impact the freedom and safety of American street motorcyclists. The MRF is committed to being a national advocate for the advancement of motorcycling and its associated lifestyle and works in conjunction with its partners to help educate elected officials and policymakers in Washington and beyond.

Progressive Suspension Launches Full Suspension System for Yamaha XSR700 and MT-07/FZ-07 Riders

Progressive Suspension, the nation’s premier manufacturer of motorcycle and UTV suspension products, announced the launch of a full suspension system designed for the popular XSR700, Yamaha MT-07 and its predecessor, the Yamaha FZ-07. The system consists of two products, a replacement front fork cartridge kit and a monoshock for the rear, both designed by Progressive Suspension specifically for these motorcycles. While each product is available separately, the magic happens when both front and rear suspension receive the upgrade.

The suspension system is designed to improve the quality of the XSR/MT/FZ ride, as well as offering greater front-end stability, improved cornering, front brake dive and bottoming control. The setup eliminates bottoming and shaking in sweeping corners, giving the rider a smoother, more nimble riding experience.

“We chose to launch this system for the MT-07, a great bike that needed better-than-stock suspension to really show its stuff,” said Sean Delshadi, brand manager for Progressive Suspension. “Customers who upgrade their FZ-07, MT-07 or XSR700 with our system will have a more stable ride and less front-end dive when braking. We think our system unlocks the real performance potential of the bike, making it a whole new animal for the rider to enjoy.”

The front suspension package features Progressive Suspension’s state of the art Monotube Fork Cartridge Kit which replaces the open bath internals of the stock fork. It converts dual damper rod suspension to high performance gas charged monotube dampers and custom tuned fork springs. Monotube-style damping improves ride comfort, resistance to front brake dive as well as improving front end stability, cornering and bottoming control. The kit fits 2015 through current Yamaha FZ-07, MT-07 and XSR700 forks and replaces all of the internal parts. No modifications to the motorcycle are required, and the installation is simple. Suggested retail price is $339.95.

The 465 Series Rear setup represents state of the art in high pressure, gas monotube shock design. Utilizing a 46mm bore and deflective disc piston for precise damping, the beefy, 16mm, hard-chrome shaft rides on custom Viton seals for low friction and leak free life. Threaded body and a five-position rebound adjuster allows for fine tuning to match the owner’s riding style and load. Available with options including a standard rate or heavy-duty spring, and stock length. The 465 is custom tuned for each application, from the damping and spring rate all the way down to the jounce bumper. This product fits the 2015 and later Yamaha FZ-07, MT-07, XRS700 and the product line will soon expand to include other monoshock bikes. Suggested retail price is $649.95

More information is available on the Progressive Suspension website or at a Progressive Suspension dealer.

BIKERNET INNOVATION OF THE WEEK–This Blowjob Machine Designed for Tesla’s On Autopilot Is A Terrible Idea But Probably Not Why You Think.

First, I need to be clear that I am not here to kink-shame anyone. Sex is great, masturbation is great, and you do whatever the hell you want to get yourself off, as long as everyone involved is thrilled to be a part of it.

Now, with that out of the way, I have to say that I find the Automoblow, the “first sexual pleasure device for self-driving cars” incredibly alarming. The reason I’m alarmed isn’t because of the part that involves you shoving your turgid junk into something that looks like a

The reason I’m alarmed isn’t because of the part that involves you shoving your turgid junk into something that looks like a cross between a smoothie-maker and a medical device; it’s because of the “self-driving cars” part. Because this fellate-o-tron is relying specifically on Tesla’s Autopilot, and, despite a lot of confusion, that’s not a self-driving system. So keep it in your pants.

I thought this may be a joke at first, but, no, this product seems to be a real thing one could actually buy.

The website for Automoblow clearly states “Enjoy sexual satisfaction while your Tesla drives itself,” and that’s a very dangerous statement to make because, as you may recall, Tesla’s Autopilot system is a Level 2 semi-autonomous system, and as such needs constant attention from the driver to be ready to take over at a moment’s notice.

I’m not sure I’d trust a horny driver getting his dick worked by a tireless, mechanical blowjob-simulating machine to be in a position where they’re ready to take over if something goes wrong.

The Automoblow appears to be an Autoblow A.I. converted to run on 12V (I’m assuming, as the original machine seems to work from a 110v to 240v wall outlet) and mounted on an adjustable arm that mounts into the center cupholder of the Tesla.

Those little icons around the contraption are interesting, but I don’t feel like absolutely have to refer just to this thing. Spicing up “long road trips with occasional blowjobs” has been happening long before blowjob machines with artificial intelligence were even a thing, and, as far as “showing up to work feeling refreshed,” all I have to say to that is don’t be a fool: have your wanks in the company bathroom, on the clock, so you can be paid for your valuable “work prep” time.

That’s just being an adult 101, right there.

The website states it was “made especially for Tesla” though it could be used in pretty much any other car with a cupholder, at least for the passenger when driving, or the driver when parked. Really, at the present time, these options would be the only safe way to use this kind of thing in your car, as using it while traveling on the highway is as bad or worse than sleeping with Autopilot on, which is, as we’ve mentioned, idiotic.

I suspect that this would be even worse; if this thing is really doing stuff like this to your junk while the car is driving:

…then I’m not sure how ready to quickly take over you’re really going to be, and, if a wreck does happen, you’ve got to deal with the added embarrassment of being found with your junk trapped in a motorized erotic thermos.

HOW TO JUDGE THE VIRTUAL BIKE SHOW–
A new way to judge a car show
Our Managing Editor becomes a ‘virtual’ judge

By Tom Stahler
The Journal Classic Cars.com

The car show I am judging is the American Modern Insurance Group Virtual Classic Car Show. Yes, that means I will be judging from the comfort of my home office. The show is part of the celebrations surrounding the SEMA Action Network’s National Collector Car Day.

American Modern, a specialty insurance organization known for its collector car coverage, is hosting its first-ever virtual collector car show. We hope to view some of the most impressive classic and collector cars across the country.

From July 9 – 23, 2020, collector car owners can check out the American Modern Collector Car Facebook page and submit a description and one to three photos of their classic car or truck in any of the following car show categories:

Best Street Rod/Hot Rod Car or Truck
Best Antique Car or Truck
Best Muscle Car
Best Classic Car or Truck
Best Street Machine, Restomod Car or Truck
Best Modern-Day Domestic Car or Truck

RELATED: SEMA considering ways to make annual show attendees feel safe
A team of American Modern judges, including myself, will select winners by July 27th. From July 27th – August 4th, images of all submissions and the winner from each category will be displayed in a gallery on American Modern’s Facebook page.

Additionally, visitors can vote for their favorite winning collector vehicle and a “fan favorite” will be awarded to the classic car submission that gets the most engagement.

“While many in-person car shows remain canceled due to COVID-19, we wanted to provide an opportunity to safely continue the cherished summer tradition of spotlighting special classic cars,” said Rick Drewry, Senior Claims Specialist, American Modern. “With more than 25 years of experience in the collector car industry, we understand how classic car owners feel about their vehicles, and we are excited to offer a creative way to celebrate the passion of the collector car community.”

Like many in my profession, we are chomping at the bit to get out to events again. In the meantime, we are fortunate that companies like American Modern continue to engage all of us in our passion.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WEEKLY LESSON
“Pragmatic” vs. “Dogmatic”: What Are The Differences?
Don’t crumble under pressure? Got a practical nature? Does this make you pragmatic or dogmatic? You can’t swap the two, so let’s find out their difference.

Some people have the incredible ability to set their emotions aside and make clear, calm decisions in a crisis. Instead of getting caught up in big-picture ideals or feeling overwhelmed by the scale of a situation, they manage to face the problem head on and address it practically one step at a time.

For those who don’t crumble under pressure, does this practical nature make them pragmatic? Or are they dogmatic because they are logical and able to get down to business?

In this case, the right word is pragmatic, and although these two words have similar definitions, they actually aren’t synonyms and can’t be swapped. Let’s dig a little deeper …

What does pragmatic mean?
As an adjective, pragmatic means “of or relating to a practical point of view or practical considerations.” It also refers to the philosophical movement pragmatism, which stresses practical consequences. Pragmatic can also mean “treating historical phenomena with special reference to their causes, antecedent conditions, and results,” as well as “relating to the affairs of the community.”

If you’re in a sticky situation, you need the help of someone who is pragmatic and who can remain calm enough to think clearly while making practical calls. This person doesn’t get stuck on big-picture ideals and emotions but instead can make decisions based on realistic, real-world circumstances.

However, when used as a noun, pragmatic is defined as “an officious or meddlesome person.” Even though this is more of an archaic sense of the term, it can insinuate that someone is overbearing and only plays by the rules.

And then there’s also pragmatic sanction, which is “any one of various imperial decrees with the effect of fundamental law.”

The word pragmatic was first recorded sometime around 1580–90. It is ultimately derived from the Greek word prâgma (“deed; state business”). Synonyms for pragmatic include businesslike, down-to-earth, efficient, hardheaded, logical, practical, realistic, and sober.

What does dogmatic mean?
Dogmatic is an adjective that’s defined as “relating to or of the nature of a dogma or dogmas or any strong set of principles concerning faith, morals, etc., as those laid down by a church; doctrinal.” For example, each week her preacher delivers dogmatic sermons that incorporate relevant current events.

Someone who is dogmatic lives by a certain set of principles they follow. However, dogmatic can also have a negative connotation, as it also means “asserting opinions in a doctrinaire or arrogant manner; opinionated.” Therefore, this dogmatic person might look down on others who don’t live according to those same morals. They might be intolerant to other beliefs. For example, he could never win a fight with his dogmatic brother, who never stopped arguing long enough to consider anyone else’s point of view.

This word was first recorded around 1595–1605. It’s derived from the Greek word dogma (“opinion, tenet”). Some synonyms for dogmatic include arbitrary, arrogant, assertive, obstinate, and stubborn.

What are the differences between pragmatic and dogmatic?

In many cases, pragmatic is all about being practical while dogmatic refers to someone sticking to certain rules. Dogmatic people or things can also be arbitrary or intolerant since they revolve around specific morals or thinking while those who are pragmatic stick to what’s matter of fact.

Here are a few more examples:

His mom makes dogmatic decisions based on her strict morale code and often looks down on her husband, who has a more pragmatic way of thinking.
She is such a pragmatic thinker that when anyone tries to talk about
Here are a few more examples:

Now that you’ve learned the differences between these two terms, test yourself on some more commonly confused words:

“Misinformation” vs. “Disinformation”
“Unchartered” vs. “Uncharted”

TWISTED ROAD TRIP REPORT–
Motorcycle Tour: Utah’s Upper Big Cottonwood Canyon

BY MATT WOLSKI

Utah is home to trip-worthy spots like the Bonneville Salt Flats, Arches, Zion, and Bryce Canyon National Parks. But, in a state as geographically varied as Utah, the getting there is every bit as wonderful as the destination. In fact, situated at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon, you’ll find one of the best and most scenic Utah motorcycle rides.

One of the best mountain passes in the state—SR 190 Guardsman Pass at elevation 9,717’—is open for business (after closures from congestion and avalanches) and the temperate Utah weather means it’s always a fine day to take a motorcycle ride in Salt Lake City.

It’s home to Solitude and Brighton ski areas and the massive avalanche slide path of Argenta. It’s also where you’ll find summer favorites like Storm Mountain picnic area, and the small community of Silver Fork. The road climbs and twists from the western foothills of the central Wasatch to Park City on the mellower eastern side of the range.

The road parallels Big Cottonwood Creek and weaves between towering quartzite buttresses. Expect to see climbers on popular crags such as JHCOB (Jesus H Christ on a Bicycle) Wall, but don’t take your eyes off the road for long—there are plenty of places you don’t want to hang a turn wide or cross the double yellow into an oncoming Tacoma. While the twisties are great for a motorcycle tour, there really are many unforgiving blind corners, so ride within your limits; this isn’t the place for Street Rossis.

Mountain twisties, Cottonwood Canyon

The canyon broadens about halfway up to reveal the ridgeline between Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon. Pause for a break at the Silver Fork Lodge and Restaurant—a popular spot with the Sunday breakfast crowd and also a mountain wedding reception venue for couples who met in the lift line—and take in the view of Honeycomb Canyon. Several Forest Service campsites are located close by, and the air smells pleasantly of burning pine in the evening.

You’ll often spot climbers on the cliff faces

The scenic ride starts turning left onto South Guardsman Pass Road which tightly switchbacks to, you guessed it, Guardsman Pass and the top of the world. For mountain bikers and hikers, this is the drop-off point for the Wasatch Crest and Blood Lake Trails. Head east toward Park City, the Uinta Mountain Range, and many more miles of thrilling riding if you have time. Otherwise, circle back to Salt Lake City and enjoy the canyon in the reverse direction.

Silver Fork Lodge and Restaurant
Things to know:

• Check for the status of seasonal road closures at http://udottraffic.utah.gov/.
• Traffic can be heavy, especially on weekends. The best time to ride is early on a weekday morning and catch the sunrise at the pass.
• Be prepared to “Share the Road” with our two-wheeled pedal bike brothers and sisters. BCC is a popular hill climb training circuit for competitive cyclists.
• Big Cottonwood Canyon is part of Salt Lake’s watershed. Don’t litter, only do your business in the bathrooms, and stay out of the creek (which is whitewater-dangerous and kills an unlucky someone every spring).
• Before opening up the throttle, be aware of the UPD (Unified Police District—law enforcement specifically tasked with policing the Wasatch Canyons).
• Have fun and be safe.

Great article Marilyn.

Too many people visit Sturgis and miss so much of the history of the region, history which is at the very heart of the American story.

In my visits over the last two decades I have always made it a point to check out as many historical sites as possible.

NEWS FROM THE RODDER’S JOURNAL–Coronavirus has caused serious shipping delays across the board, but it has been toughest on our international subscribers. We sent out subscriber copies of TRJ #83 in early April, and we are still getting reports that some copies have not yet reached Australia and New Zealand in particular.

We have been working with our supply chains to get to the bottom of this. They have informed us that the magazines are not lost. Instead, they are labeled as significantly delayed.

To add to the frustration, the newsstand supply chain shredded thousands of magazines even before the on-sale date. This resulted in a limited supply—just barely enough to meet the immediate demand.

In our efforts to improve the situation, we have uploaded TRJ #83 on our website in its entirety. This is not meant to be a replacement for the printed version, however it will give some of you a chance to read the current issue. This is available for subscribers only.

We thank you for your patience and understanding in these uncertain times. We hope you are staying safe and healthy.

Cheers!
Your Friends at The Rodder’s Journal

Go to the Rodder’s Journal to subscribe. It’s an amazing publication. We ran into another new magazine called Gnarly. It looks like a cartoon magazine but it’s all about street artists, air brush artists and pinstripers. And we haven’t heard much about another Easyriders magazine. We did hear that they were in negotiations with a venue in Sturgis, but the check never arrived, so far no presence in at the Rally.–Bandit

NEWS FROM OPERATION GRATITUDE--Ten days ago our nation celebrated Independence Day. In the spirit of this important holiday, Operation Gratitude redoubled our efforts to honor our volunteers and the brave men and women who sacrifice so much to protect the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

We focused on actions and impact.

In just 10 days we shipped and delivered more than 1 Million individual items and thousands of handwritten letters to 40,000 Frontline Responders in the cities of San Antonio, Houston and fittingly Philadelphia, as well as 10,000 Deployed Troops serving overseas.

We also reached an incredible milestone as part of our COVID-19 relief efforts. In just 13 weeks we have delivered more than 4 million individual items and 100,000 handwritten letters of appreciation and impacted 250,000 Frontline Responders across the country and Deployed Service Members around the world.

While many other organizations have touted big numbers and talked about what should be done for Frontline Responders, we took action with you and impacted more than a quarter of a million heroes in just three months, and we are just getting started.

Because of volunteers like you we are on pace to exceed our initial goal of supporting 300,000 frontline responders. And we have pledged to double what we have already achieved to positively impact more than 500,000 Deployed Troops, healthcare heroes, first responders, and National Guardsmen at the time of their greatest need and as COVID-19 spikes in some states.

As Frontline Responders continue to report higher rates of infection than the general population and hospital workers describe emergency rooms as “battlefields,” they have also shared the tangible impact our jumbo care packages have made during challenging and stressful times. Their stories and images from coast to coast have demonstrated that “masks cannot hide smiles” and they truly appreciate our support.

The COO of Chi Franciscan, one of the largest hospital networks in the Seattle-Tacoma area said it best: “Your generous gifts came as an incredible surprise and true acknowledgment of the many long hours our healthcare heroes have given in support of our communities. This situation has been overwhelming and exhausting for all of us, and an unexpected, magnificent gesture from Operation Gratitude was received with great enthusiasm and appreciation.”

The men and women on the frontlines are working tirelessly to fight an invisible enemy in unthinkable conditions while now confronting a second wave of this pandemic. They are exhausted and their spirits are at an all-time low, yet they continue to serve our communities and all of us with courage. And we need your help to send a second wave of gratitude to lift their spirits and steel their resolve.

I want you to know one thing — we will continue to support them. No matter what the demand is, Operation Gratitude will meet it, because we have YOUR help and the support of so many grateful Americans like you. I said it before and I want you to hear me again — they can’t stop, so we won’t stop.

I say this with the utmost confidence, because I have seen you step up time and again since I started as the CEO of Operation Gratitude. Most recently when a special group of volunteers heard our call to action and joined the RED Scarf Challenge. We challenged our supporters to knit or crochet as many RED scarves and hats as they could in order to Remember Everyone Deployed. In just three weeks, more than 680 knitters and crocheters rose to the challenge making more than 8,400 red scarves and hats. That astounding number is far more than any of us imagined and it makes me feel prouder than ever to be a part of this remarkable movement.

These will be included in our special “Christmas in July” Care Packages being sent to 5,000 Deployed Troops later this month, and I know that it will keep them warm in body and spirit. Congratulations to ALL who participated in the RED Scarf Challenge, with special acknowledgments to the following individuals:

Pat Tripodo – 176 Scarves

Audrey Prest – 94 Scarves & 76 Hats

Teri Adams – 140 Scarves

As well as the following dedicated groups:

Taycheedah Correctional Institution – 140 Scarves

Talented Hands – 65 Scarves & 34 Hats

Vitalia Knit One Crochet Two – 53 Scarves & 39 Hats

To all of the knitters and crocheters who helped us achieve these amazing results, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know the recipients will appreciate it just as much as I do — and I promise to share pictures of their smiling faces as soon as we receive them.

If you are looking for ways to get involved and support our Christmas in July efforts for Deployed Troops head over to the Operation Gratitude web site.

The Game of Roads Rally is RESCHEDULED for May 20-23, 2021
We tried. We really tried. With the majority of spring and summer rallies postponed due to coronavirus, we really wanted to hold our “Game of Roads” National Rally in the fall because we know the healing power of riding and coming together.

Our hope was that by September, coronavirus was going to be sufficiently under control that we could hold a safe rally. Rally Chair Matt Smith and his team of volunteers had been working hard not only on all of the usual moving parts of a rally but also on the new realities of holding a rally during a pandemic, with contactless check-in, additional disinfecting protocols, and appropriate social distancing.

Member Jill Veverka (a registered nurse) volunteered to help make sure that the rally was indeed safe.

As recently as last week we thought that we could make this happen. But a lot changed in just a handful of days and BMW RA President Sibley Poland called for an emergency Board meeting. It was decided unanimously that it would be irresponsible to potentially expose rally attendees (and the communities that they come from and travel through to get to the rally) to increased risk of catching and spreading the virus.

This was an extremely tough call to make but is the right one under these exceptional circumstances. The good news is that you only have to wait until the Spring! It’s in the same great location – the Smoky Mountain Event Center in Waynesville, NC. And with the same great roads and the same great club. Registration will remain open for the new dates.

Thank you for your understanding. This was a really difficult decision to make but we feel that it’s in the best interest of our members, rally attendees, vendors and partners, and the motorcycling community. Be well and stay safe.

PAINTING ROADWAYS WITH POLITICAL SLOGANS--A brother is reaching out to Tim at United Way / Worcester & Worcester City Clerk

Some of us in our motorcycle community (2,822 registered motorcycles in Worcester and over 28,500 in Worcester County) have concerns about painting the roadways – safety concerns.

I had some history with Worcester officials about 15 years ago when they ‘enlarged’ crossed walks, as well as working with MA DOT / RMV official promoting motorcycle awareness aimed at reducing accidents and injuries, and assist as needed with the Worcester County Motorcyclists Survivor’s Fund, Inc. Flyin’ Ryan Outraces Indy Field for First Win

Clearly, no National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock Motorcycle (PSM) team spent the COVID19 delay better than “Flyin’ Ryan” Oehler and his small, independent team.

His B&K Cylinder Heads EBR hit the ground at Lucas Oil Raceway near Indianapolis for the unique E3 Spark Plug NHRA Nationals ready to make quick, consistent laps. And when raceday required a cool head and quick thinking—no one in the field was better than Oehler.

In his fully-equipped, Bloomington, Illinois, machine shop, “Bad Brad” Oehler—Ryan’s dad and engine builder—spent the “down time” hard at work, squeezing more power and reliability out of their S&S, billet, V-twin motors.

And starting with Friday’s test session at Indy, Oehler and his team were very pleased with their ability to apply that power from start to finishline. They weren’t the quickest bike at Lucas Oil Raceway, but their fifth place qualifying position showed they had a good piece to race with.

Ryan’s day started with a round 1 win over fellow independent EBR racer Marc Ingwersen. As in qualifying, Oehler’s 6.92 at 196 miles per hour (MPH) wasn’t the round’s quickest or fastest, but was easily good enough to advance.

Oehler’s team was on the receiving end of some racing luck in round 2 when opponent Scotty Pollacheck threw away one of the best laps anyone ran all weekend with a -.001 redlight start, advancing Ryan to the semis.

Now it was really time to show what the B&K Cylinder Heads EBR could do with round-leading, team-best performance. Oil company funded semifinal opponent Hector Arana Jr. took the tree by .009, but Oehler was able to drive around with a quickest-of-the-semis 6.90 at 196.34 mph (both bests of the weekend for the team) to Arana Jr.’s 6.98 for the win and the trip to the final round.

This was Oehler’s first final at a two-wide NHRA event, and it couldn’t have started out much worse. Too late, the team realized the clutch free-play was out of adjustment and as soon as the bike was started, it began pulling Ryan forward. Against an opponent as stout as three-time champion Matt Smith, this seemed like a fatal blow.

But Oehler kept his cool, holding back as long as possible while staging the bike, knowing that the bike would pull him through for a redlight if he didn’t. It was timed perfectly, with the bike rolling through for a good, green .010 reaction time. Oehler had executed perfectly in a situation that is an Achilles heel for salaried, multi-time champions.

The unusual start made for an awkward launch and poor 1.11 60 foot time for Oehler, and his goose looked cooked. But Smith’s struggles in the other lane were worse. A thrashed engine swap before the final left Smith rolling the dice, and the bike bogged to a 1.15 60. It didn’t get any better for Matt, whose transmission dead-headed and left him coasting across the finishline with Oehler’s winlight flashing brightly in the other lane.

Here’s a video of the final round:
https://youtu.be/3NJKCvxt8xg
embed:

Oehler’s naturally positive outlook, clean-cut looks, work ethic, and devotion to American-made technology make for a great marketing partner in our uncertain times.

“I really want to thank the coalition of sponsors who help keep this little program going—and winning!” said Ryan, who added: “There’s room for more, corporate America, so climb on board to go fast and get in the winners’ circle!”

Flyin’ Ryan and the B&K Cylinder Heads EBR race next August 7-9 in the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colorado.

BIKERNET READER COMES BACK FOR MORE– I am pissed. I have made it plain, I came home in ’67 and no longer belonged here anymore.

I built a Panhead, and I still have it. It will go to my daughter when I am gone. This shit about the police is bullshit. I was a mechanic at Robison Harley in the ‘70s and serviced police bikes. I learned, while I worked on their rides.

Some of them were assholes but they enjoyed doing a lot of what we did. Sometimes I ran into them doing what I should not have been doing. I got a pass. they were tough on the Outlaws at the time in the ‘70s. I guess my point is there are good and bad but they have a thankless job like we did.

Who are you going to call, when the shit hits the fan, a politician?

ride safe,

–A.J.

WE GET IT—Bikers and folks who build bikes understand freedom and all the wonderful resources at our fingertips, currently.

We published an article about Hollywood Celebs who got into racing and it made me think about my own involvement in racing.

It’s amazing the opportunities that avail themselves to everyone in today’s society and how many folks have taken advantage of them. Some, like myself are fortunate to stumble into many of my opportunities.

I was thinking about Buzz Kantor, who, through his magazine American Iron had so many opportunities from custom building, to drag racing and Cannon Ball rallies. How about Brian and Laura Klock their daughters, and Bonneville records from making motorcycle windshields.

The Cannon Ball Rally recently started again and suddenly there was another opportunity to do something new and exciting. Immediately Cris Sommer Simmons and her husband Pat from the Doobie brothers like so many folks, jumped on board just to relish in a new and exciting experience around motorcycles. Hell, brothers ride to the Himalayas on Royal Enfields just to experience the region, one of the homes of Buddhism and the people at the base of mount Everest.

There’s just so much positive left to do in life today. And the resources to accomplish almost anything are at your fingertips. Hell, you can build a bike without leaving your garage. Sure, some of us have more cash than others. I restrict my efforts because of budget constantly, then look for a second-hand version. There’s always a way.

Then ride fast and free forever…
