CHANGING TIMES THURSDAY NEWS for March 2, 2017

Hey,

The Redhead of Redheads was sick this morning. Easyriders finally announced their auction block effort to the public. Reactions are mixed. The government is trying to find its way and the rest of the world is at war. WTF?

I say we let the readers own Easyriders and put the spirit and freedom back. The government needs to put the Freedom back. Hell, even England is trying to put the Freedom back. Let’s dance in the streets once more. Let the folks who don’t like Freedom fight it out forever. Knock yourselves out.

‘Scout 42’ 2015 Indian Custom Scout By Dirty Bird Concepts

Beautiful work.

I am considering purchasing a 2017 Scout 100.

(1) Does anyone make a brake upgrade from the single piston units to four pistons up front and two pistons rear?

(2) Where are the, cafe fairing, and radiator dam, purchased from?

(3) Are there any sources for analog gauges, Speedo, Tach, Fuel?

(4) Is the engine capable of being blueprinted and balanced?

(5) Does the engine come with a cam tensioner plate (that fails), or timing gears?

(6) Is the balance point, center of gravity, located high like the Road King/FLs, or does it feel lower?

Great work.

Thanks.

Sons of Anarchy’ Spinoff, Cast News: Series Finds Its Lead Star in ‘East Los High.’

“Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter will be back to direct and even co-write the “Mayans MC” pilot with co-executive producer Elgin James.

In other news, Sutter has been in a tense Twitter exchange with “Quantico” star Aaron Diaz and some of his fans after the actor tweeted him hoping to get a role in the spinoff.

“You got it! When we do that scene where we mutilate the face of a pretty boy with perfect hair, I’ll give you a call. Datup,” he teasingly tweeted to Diaz, who was offended by the joke.

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY–
A man is stranded on a desert island, all alone for ten years. One day, he sees a speck in the horizon. He thinks to himself, “It’s not a ship.” The speck gets a little closer and he thinks, “It’s not a boat.” The speck gets even closer and he thinks, “It’s not a raft.”

Then, out of the surf comes this gorgeous blonde woman, wearing a wet suit and scuba gear. She comes up to the guy and she says, “How long has it been since you’ve had a cigarette?”

“Ten years!” he says.

She reaches over, unzips a waterproof pocket on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack of fresh cigarettes. He takes one, lights it, takes a long drag and says, “Man, oh man! Is that good!”

Then she asks, “How long has it been since you’ve had a drink of whiskey?”

He replies, “Ten years!”

She reaches over, unzips her waterproof pocket on the right, pulls out a flask and gives it to him. He takes a long swig and says, “Wow, that’s fantastic!”

Then she starts unzipping this long zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit and she says to him, “And how long has it been since you’ve had some real fun?”

And the man replies, “My God! Don’t tell me you’ve got a motorcycle in there!”

THE LATEST FROM DEUS EX MACHINA, THE BEL AIR 1200–
by Michael Woolaway

Introducing the 21st build to come out of Woolie’s Workshop, the Deus Ex Machina Bel Air 1200 Framer.

This motorcycle was built by Michael Woolaway for a customer who requested a bike similar to The American, one of the first creations to roll out of Woolie’s Workshop in Venice Beach California.

For Woolie, building a bike with a Harley motor is a significant undertaking, and taken with honor to the maker’s American racing heritage, particularly the era of KRTTs on the road racing circuit. This time around, Woolie was also inspired by another American icon: “I thought about what I loved about American Design, and it hit me. The 1957 Chevy Bel Air!” Says Woolaway, having restored a few back in the day at his auto body shop in Hood River, Oregon.

The ‘50s style is evident in the fins in the seat cowl, handshaped by Woolie from aluminum. The tank is also a one-offer formed with the help of the english wheel, power hammer, and a healthy assortment of dollies and hammers, all eager to fulfill their purpose in the hands of the well-learned shaper.

When it came to the paint, Woolie went down to Anaheim Rod and Custom with a vague idea in mind and worked side-by-side with Matt until they concocted the perfect mix. “I’ve found it so much easier to mix colors in person as you can control it and you are never surprised with the outcome.” What he wanted and what he got turned out to be pretty darn spot on, a perfect reference to the golden era.

The chromoly frame features an internal dual oil feed system and accommodates an asymmetrical monoshock. And not only is it significantly lighter than than stock, it is also much stiffer with road-racing geometry for high-speed straight-line stability and responsive handling in the corners.

Close your eyes and you might just mistake yourself astride a small track bike, but don’t forget to open your eyes when you roll open the throttle lest you whip yourself into outer space. Yes, my friend, that would be a very powerful engine between your legs. 74 cubic inches of combustible American rocketpower and generations of large family breeding.

DAYTONA EDITOR’S CHOICE SHOW CANCELED–
I should have sent this e-mail a long time ago, but I was hoping that things would change and they have not.

Unfortunately, as Daytona is only 9 days away, there will not be an Editor’s Choice Show for Bike Week this year. Sadly, Harley-Davidson has decided to go a different direction with their portion of the show in spite of what I believe to be very successful shows last year.

Apparently they have decided to move away from the custom segment of their shows and move it to the dealership to aid in developing traffic for their dealers.

While this is a great disappointment in that we were hoping to build on last year’s events, we will just move forward with it as it has been in previous years. Bad part is there is no time to do this for Daytona, so…. I suggest we start planning for Sturgis now instead.

I believe that there will be no problem for the Iron Horse to be our host in Sturgis, and with this much lead time I will be happy to get everyone some ad and social media materials to start promotion. If this is agreeable with everyone shoot me some suggestions on a day that will fit for everyone and let’s move forward.

Again, very sorry that this didn’t work out better for us. I know you all put good effort behind this and I feel bad for not maximizing the work.

BIKERNET SPECIAL REPORT BLOWS THE LID OFF CITIZENS CLAIMING MOTORCYCLES ARE DANGEROUS– How Motorcycle Riding Improves Physical Health

This blog post is dedicated to every rider who’s sick to death of those “motorcycles are so dangerous” conversations, to every mother who’s convinced her son or daughter is insane for riding, and for anyone who needs a really good excuse to go out and buy a bike. The bottom line is that riding a motorcycle is a form of low-impact exercise that improves muscle tone, can assist with weight loss, and has a multitude of health benefits. These health benefits include but are not limited to:

Healthier, stronger knees and thighs: A well-known orthopaedic surgeon in Indy once told me that motorcycle riders have fewer knee problems because riding a bike strengthens key muscles used to hold the patella and other bones in the knee in place. He told me that riding a motorcycle may reverse knee pain and problems and can most definitely prevent them.

Most of the key muscles used to hold knee bones in place reside in the thigh. Ever notice that chicks that ride bikes have nice thighs? There’s a reason! Additionally, backing a bike into a parking spot, especially uphill, is basically like doing leg presses with a 600 pound weight. It works!

Harley-Davidson Factory Team Primed For Flat-Track Battle– It’s a flat-track triple threat. The Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Racing Team will unleash a three-rider squad in 2017. Former AMA Grand National champions Kenny Coolbeth Jr. and Jake Johnson and young flat-track star Brandon Robinson will race in the legendary Factory Team leathers.

The team was announced today during a live interview with Coolbeth, Johnson and Robinson during ABC network coverage of ESPN’s X Games Aspen.

Gunning for the checkered flag aboard the fierce Harley-Davidson XG750R competition motorcycle, the formidable trio of ace racers will chase a championship on the American Flat Track (AFT) series and fight to medal in the Harley-Davidson Flat Track Racing event at ESPN’s X Games Minneapolis. The racing season opens during Daytona Bike Week at the March 16 AFT Daytona TT on a new circuit featuring a jump to be constructed inside Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.

H-D Flat Track

“This edition of the Harley Factory Team will bring unmatched savvy and experience to the track,” said Harley-Davidson Vice President and Managing Director U.S. Mike Kennedy. “With a combined 59 Grand National wins and five AMA Pro Grand National championships, this line-up of riders knows what it takes to do battle with the lead pack and will be a force aboard our new Harley-Davidson XG750R Factory Racing bikes. If you are in Daytona for Bike Week, ride to the race and see the Factory Team in action on this exciting new TT track.”

The Harley Factory Team will field a fleet of Harley XG750R bikes for Coolbeth, Johnson and Robinson. With a custom chassis purpose-built for flat track racing, the

XG750R flat tracker is powered by a race-modified, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 750cc Revolution X™ V-Twin engine originally engineered for the Harley-Davidson Street® 750, a motorcycle designed for maximum urban maneuverability with rebellious Dark Custom™ attitude. The Revolution X engine is assembled at Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, Missouri.

“I’m excited to be one of the riders helping to push the XG750R to the front of the field,” said Robinson. “I’m sure I’ll be battling with Kenny and Jake to see who can make history and score the first win aboard the new bike. I’ve learned a lot racing against them. Now we’re working together to bring home a championship for Harley-Davidson.”

The race-modified Revolution X engine and a racing frame for the XG750R were developed in collaboration with Vance & Hines Motorsports. The XG750R flat tracker motorcycle is not a production model. The 750cc XG Revolution X V-Twin engine is for sale through Harley-Davidson dealers today and can be modified for racing use by aspiring dealers and privateers.

Kenny Coolbeth Jr.

A three-time AMA Pro Grand National champion (2006-2008), the veteran Coolbeth has won 36 times in AMA Grand National competition, more than any active racer in the series. Coolbeth claimed three consecutive titles while racing for the Harley-Davidson Factory Team from 2006 to 2013. Aboard the Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson XR750 in 2016, Coolbeth won at the Springfield Mile and finished seventh in points. He was named the AMA Flat Track Rookie of the Year in 1994 and won his first Grand National race in 2002. Coolbeth is 39 years old and lives in Center Hill, Florida.

Jake Johnson

Jake Johnson won consecutive AMA Pro Grand National championships (2010-2011) on Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycles and has won 20 times in AMA Grand National competition since moving up to the top pro class in 2002. In 2016 Johnson won on the Daytona short track and was fourth in the GNC1 season standings. Johnson won the AMA Pro Singles championship in 2006 and 2008 and was AMA Flat Track Rookie of the Year in 2002. Johnson is 32 years old and lives on Coatesville, Pa.

Brandon Robinson

Brandon Robinson enjoyed a break-out season in 2013 with seven top-five finishes and three victories, including a sweep of both races on the Springfield Mile. In 2016 Robinson piloted the Kennedy Racing Harley-Davidson XR750 to his fourth career victory with a win on the Lima half-mile, notched two additional podium results and finished third in GNC1 points. In 2008 Robinson was the AMA Basic Twins class champion. Robinson is 26 years old and lives in Oxford, Pa.

Entering its 64th consecutive season, American Flat Track is the most historic form of American motorcycle racing. The re-vamped 2017 American Flat Track series features 18 rounds of racing headlined by powerful, twin-cylinder motorcycles in the AFT Twins class.

The Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Racing Team is proudly partnered with Vance & Hines Motorsports.

RSD SUPER HOOLIGAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP KICKS OFF

The “thrills and spills” of Street Bike Flat Track Racing, with the 2017 Super Hooligan National Championship Series (SHNC) sponsored by Indian Motorcycle, is off to a great start. We kicked the series off with The 1 Pro in Salem, OR followed by Mama Tried’s Flat Out Friday in Milwaukee, WI. It’s been a no-holds-barred battle to the stripe at these races and all on 500 lbs. of fury.

Couldn’t make the events? We’ve got you covered. Check out the recap below and the current SHNC Points Standings attached.

Round 1: The 1 Pro – Salem, Oregon
In association with the annual The 1 Moto Show custom motorcycle show in Portland, The 1 Pro flat track races commenced once again upon the 1/10th mile banked clay oval at Salem Indoor Speedway on Sunday. 1) Sammy Halbert #69 on a RSD Indian Scout, (2) Brad Spencer #7 from San Jose on his Sportster and (3) Andy DiBrino #14 from Portland piloting the See See Motorcycles XG750 made up the field and fought bar-to-bar, putting on a show for the spectators. Everyone was on the edge of their seats watching what was one of the best Super Hooligan races to date. (Click here for the full story)

Round 2: Mama Tried’s Flat Out Friday – Milwaukee, WI
Grassroots racing gets sticky and brings out over 10,000 fans to watch a bunch of motorcycles turn left and beat themselves up for bragging rights at the biannual Flat Out Friday races. This indoor Dr. Pepper syrup soaked oval concrete track is in the heart of blue collar America, Milwaukee, at The BMO Harris Bradley Center. It was Benny Carlson (#45) who took home the top spot aboard his XR1200, with some serious bar banging action to keep it up front against Andy DiBrino (#14) XG750 and Terry Vestal (#27) Sportster. (Click here for the full story)

NEXT UP: Round 3: AFT Atlanta Short Track – Woodstock, GA
The next round takes place March 25th in conjunction with American Flat Track on a 3/8-mile banked red clay oval at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA. The Super Hooligan class will be filmed for tape-delayed TV telecast, along with AFT’s GNC1 & GNC2 professional races, by NBC Sports Network. You won’t want to miss the Hooligans getting Western in The South!

Stay tuned for more races across the country ranging from specialty bike shows and concerts to pro American Flat Track events and beach-side racing. The diversity promises a unique experience at each event. Watch Out America… this is Super Hooligan!

MRF Leadership, Friends and Partners–

As you know, in January the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced their intention to move forward with nominations to the Motorcyclist Advisory Council or MAC.

The MRF worked with our champions in the House and Senate to express our misgivings surrounding the lack of motorcyclists on the Council reaching out directly to the new Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao to discuss these.

This week, we were informed that the FHWA has decided to delay the MAC nomination and comment process by 30 days. It is not clear if this is directly related to the MRF’s work on this issue but we are viewing it as a positive sign that our concerns are being heard at the highest level.

I will continue to keep you informed as this issue progresses and provide updates.

Here is the link to the announcement:
This is a courtesy notification that FHWA announced an extension of the deadline for nomination applications for the Motorcyclist Advisory Council until March 23, 2017. The switch is used for custom Sportsters and OEM stock replacements. The Fuggedaboutit Ignition Switch is fabricated to attach on the Sportster primary cover in an easy-to-reach location, thus cleaning up the engine cradle area.

The kit comes with a cnc machined- billet aluminum barrel, Diamond Engineering’s stainless steel mounting screws, set screws, nuts, connectors and a marine grade ignition/starter switch for added water and vibration-resistance.

“Our award winning custom bikes have become our R&D platform for custom parts,” explained Steven Iacona, president. “The ignition switch is the first of our next twenty parts that are scheduled to be released in the coming twelve to eighteen months.”

The switch features an off/on/start with return-to-run position. It works like an automotive ignition switch and can be very easily installed, with all necessary wiring directions and installation hardware included.

The Fuggedaboutit Ignition Switch is available in 3 finishes, including brushed, polished and black anodized.

DUCATI’S PREMIER FINANCING PROGRAM LAUNCHES NATIONWIDE–

Riders can now own a new Ducati for the cost of a coffee a day.

It’s true. For the cost of a good cup of coffee per day, motorcycle enthusiasts across the U.S. can afford the Ducati of their dreams.

Because today, Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati announced the launch of its new flexible financing program, Ducati Premier Financing. This Program is a major step forward in Ducati’s new brand-expansion strategy, and one that allows far more riders to access a premium product many have felt to be out of reach… until now.

The Program’s flexibility means that riders can enjoy affordable and far lower monthly payments compared to traditional financing, even with a low down payment. There are no wear-and-tear or mileage restrictions, owners can opt for a shorter trading cycle if they want to trade in for the latest model, and they can add accessories as they choose; unlike a traditional lease.

At the end of term owners can trade for the newest Ducati model, sell it privately, or pay it off. The result is a monthly rate that would be less than the cost of renting a comparable motorcycle for just a single day.

Ducati Premier Financing applies to all 2017 Ducati models, including the recently released Multistrada 950 ($169/month) and even the new Monster 1200 S ($199/month.) Other highly anticipated releases to come – Desert Sled, SuperSport, Café Racer and Monster 797 – are also covered by the program.

Premier Financing is sure to be especially popular for the sub-$10,000 Scramblers, including the Sixty2 ($89.00/month) or the Icon ($99.00/month). New entrants to motorcycling will appreciate the Monster 821’s $139.00 per month pricing, but even hardcore enthusiasts can ride out for less than two cups of coffee a day, with the Monster 1200’s $176 per month price tag or Panigale 959’s $185 per month.

Additional information about Ducati, including participating dealers and availability can be found at www.ducati.com.

MATHEW HINTZ ARTWORK SELECTED FOR DAYTONA BIKE WEEK POSTER–

Daytona Chamber Names Hintz Official Artist of Bike Week

An original painting by the Milwaukee-based gas-and-oil artist Mathew Hintz has been selected as the key image on the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce 2017 Bike Week Poster. The Daytona Chamber has also named Hintz the Official Artist of Daytona Bike Week.

This is the third consecutive year a work by Mathew Hintz has been featured on the official Daytona Bike Week commemorative poster. Created in his distinctive layered-paint style, the painting depicts a classic motorcycle fuel tank with a Florida palm tree reflected in the chrome gas cap. Copies of the poster are free and available while supplies last at the Daytona Bike Week Welcome Center on Beach Street, and at select area businesses.

A graduate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Hintz has worked professionally for more than 20 years to develop an impressionistic painting style that’s as singular as a thumbprint and celebrates the form and craftsmanship of motorcycles and automobiles.

From 2014 to 2016 Hintz was a Licensed Harley-Davidson Artist producing works sold through Harley-Davidson dealerships. His painting of the redesigned 2015 Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle was featured on the cover of HOG Magazine, and Hintz has created the original cover art for Harley-Davidson Owner Manuals from 2008 to 2017.

RESTAURANT ATTACKS VET–
Restaurant tells vet supporters to lose the bling.
American Legion Riders surprised by Dave & Buster’s policy on motorcycle vests

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — Victor Murdock wears his American Legion vest proudly, honoring his father, a U.S. Navy veteran, as a member of the Sons of The American Legion.

“It’s just a good group of guys that want to raise awareness for PTSD, fallen veterans, for the ones that didn’t come back, even for those who did come back and are dealing with situations they never got over,” explained Murdock, the assistant director of American Legion Post 179 in Grandville.

The vest is one way Murdock and other members convey their message. After all, they say, there are few things that define American pride more than the flag and the eagle featured on the vest.

“It says we believe in America. We believe in our troops. We support our veterans,” Murdock said.

So imagine his surprise when he and another Sons of The American Legion member were told the patches on their vests could be misconstrued as gang symbols.

It happened Saturday night at the Dave & Buster’s location on 28th Street across from the Shops at CenterPoint. As the two men and their wives waited for a table, the manager informed them of a policy against motorcycle vests bearing patches and asked the men to turn their vests inside out.

They chose to leave instead.

“It’s ridiculous. I was blown away,” Murdock said. “Probably one of the first times in my life I noticed right off the bat I was being discriminated against. ”

Monday, the restaurant manager told 24 Hour News 8 that he wasn’t allowed to speak on camera, but his bosses at Dave & Buster’s corporate headquarters in Dallas confirmed the policy.

“We are extremely grateful to all of our active military members and veterans and are honored to have them as valued guests in any of our locations,” April Spearman, the vice president for marketing for Dave & Buster’s, wrote in a statement. “Though we understand that the American Legion promotes a positive mission, for consistency reasons we cannot allow motorcycle jackets displaying patches or rockers.”

In a followup email to 24 Hour News 8, Spearman added that Dave & Buster’s would have also allowed the men to leave their vests at coat check, but that they left before the manager could give them that option.

SUNDAY POST COMMENT–
I got a laugh out or your Sunday News post about the Rosendale speed trap. I’ve lived in close proximity to Rosendale for most of my life and this speed-trap bullshit has been going on for decades.

Locals know to just keep ‘er right at the limit. Another strategy is to drive through town (which is about a mile from end to end) at 15 mph, just to annoy the residents. A gas station in town sells ‘I Got Busted in Rosendale” t-shirts.

Keep on rockin’

THE BIKERNET VERY BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN, BARELY–

Last week, my girlfriend and I were getting into bed. As our passion began to heat up she said, “I don’t feel like it. I just want you to hold me.”

I said, “WHAT?! What was that?!”

She said, “You’re just not in touch with my emotional needs as a woman enough for me to satisfy your physical needs as a man.”

She responded to my puzzled look by saying, “Can’t you just love me for who I am and not what I do for you in the bedroom?”

Realizing that nothing was going to happen that …night, I went to sleep. The next day I took off of work to spend time with her. We went out to a nice lunch and then went shopping at a big department store. I walked around with her as she tried on several very expensive outfits. She couldn’t decide which one to take, so I told her we’d just buy them all. She wanted new shoes to go with her new clothes, so I said, “Lets get a pair for each outfit.”

We went on to the jewelry counter where she picked out a pair of diamond earrings. She was so excited. I started to think she was testing me because she asked for a tennis bracelet.

I threw her for a loop when I said, “That’s fine, honey.”

She was nearing sexual satisfaction from all of the excitement. Smiling with excited anticipation, she finally said, “I think this is all dear, let’s go to the cashier.”

I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, “No baby, I don’t feel like it.” Her face went completely blank as her jaw dropped with a baffled, “WHAT?”

I said, “Honey! I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while. You’re just not in touch with my financial needs as a man enough for me to satisfy your shopping needs as a woman.”

Just when she had this look like she was going to kill me, I added, “Why can’t you just love me for who I am and not for the things I buy you?” Apparently I’m not having sex tonight either…

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE BECKONING ROAD–
Sometimes the beckoning road can’t be ignored. Other times it shouldn’t be ignored. Work, family and life are a relentless circle that rarely lets up. It is then you find your mind wondering to the open road.

Riding is therapy that soothes the soul, reinvigorates you. Whether it is a short skip down to the corner store for a pack of smokes or a full day criss-crossing this beautiful country that takes us to our happy place.

Worries and concerns melt away into the back ground as you watch the countryside roll by. A small herd of cattle here, a small herd of gophers there.

We focus on the distant clouds, the swaying grasses, the small towns we pass through. We offer a nod to the people on the street, wave to the kids scurrying to the fence to catch a glimpse.

Riding lets us get lost in ourselves, lets us reconnect with nature even if it is at 80 mph. We work out those nagging problems; scream the others into the wind. Problems and solutions only a twist of the throttle away. Suddenly worries seem smaller.

You reassure yourself that you and life will go on. Maybe it is the flicker of the passing roadside hypnotising us. Maybe it is the oxygen force fed into our veins. Maybe it is the thumping of a steel heart synchronizing with ours. Whatever the way we are left refreshed.

We sometimes get tied up within our worlds; it is then we need the road. It is taking the time to step away from our problems that provides clarity. It lets the thoughts and ideas simmer in our subconscious unobstructed by our best intentions. The road distills it down to what we need – what we want.

Only by focused on the road do we let our body do what it has to get us where we need to be. So as the world whirls don’t ignore the road. Take the time to get your knees in the breeze and the wind in your hair.

BIG WEEKEND COMING UP—
We have action on the doctor’s Panhead bobber project, on Frank Jr’s Dyna Project (both at Dr. John’s for repairs) and on an art project for a Sturgis charity drive.

I’m working with Paughco, Metalsport and Bikers Choice on these efforts. I need to reach out to Paul at Race Tech over another Dyna Project. And we are looking hard at one of our old Shovel projects. Should we turn it into a Chopper. I’m sorta tempted, but I have enough on my plate.

Have a helluva weekend, and I’ll let you know as we know about the Easyriders sale.

Ride Free Forever,
