WINDY THURSDAY NEWS FOR APRIL 18, 2013

Hey,

Shit’s happening so fast around the headquarters. It’s tough to stop and relax, or fix a sandwich. I lost ten pounds in a week. My tooth ache gave me an excuse not to eat at all.

We shipped the Bonne Belle yesterday to Richmond, VA to Departure Bike Works. Lee Clemens and his crew will tune it, change the gearing and prepare it for Bub’s Bonneville event this summer.

My Mudflap FXR is ready for a test ride. Marilyn Stemp is flying in to cover the Hamster Paso Run. She’s riding out with Ted Sands from Performance Machine, after a stop at JIMS. Then I thought I better ride to Laughlin, the same weekend, and see the Chop and Grind Race team in 14 Palms on the way, then another important appointment dropped into the middle of the schedule.

I received a call about a Sons of Anarchy shoot in Wilmington, and our own celeb, the Triking Viking will read his book at a coffee shop in Long Beach this weekend. Maybe he will sign my book, if I’m lucky. We better scramble on the news, then I will report on the growing list of Bikernet content due to fly at you over the next week.

The Bikernet News is sponsored in part by IronWorks Magazine.

PARTICIPATE IN THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM’S NEW EXHIBIT–The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum will once again be presenting a new women’s exhibit at the Crossroads at the Buffalo Chip Campground. This year’s exhibit, called “Through the Years” will highlight some great motorcycling women from the early 1900s through today and you can be a part of making it happen.

Two women from each decade will be chosen to be highlighted. The criteria for this exhibit is that the women who are chosen will not have been highlighted in the previous three exhibits at the museum.

“We’ll have to look beyond the women who are the most well-known in the industry for this exhibit,” said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. “Every woman who has been inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is already highlighted in our current ‘Paving the Way: the Women of the Hall of Fame.’ In addition, we won’t include any of the women we highlighted in our recent ‘First Ladies’ or ‘Motor Maids’ exhibits. That means we’ll be looking at highlighting women who may not have had quite as much publicity in the past.”

As part of building this exhibit, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum is soliciting help from anyone who wants to participate. If you know of a woman who deserves the recognition that this exhibit will provide, you can email a form to the museum, and the forms will be added to the exhibit. “We really want this exhibit to be inclusive and to truly honor women who have made a difference in motorcycling,” said Paige Diers. “We don’t pretend to know everyone who is deserving of inclusion, so we want others to help us out.” The form, available at www.sturgismuseum.com/assets/file-manager/Through-the-Years-Form.doc will have a space for a photo and a brief paragraph about the woman.

Once received, those forms will be added to the exhibit and placed on the walls along with the rest of the highlighted women.

The exhibit will be on display throughout the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally at the Crossroads – a free access area at the Buffalo Chip Campground. For additional information on the Through the Years exhibit and how you can be a part of it, contact Christine Paige Diers at 605-347-2001 or email Christine@sturgismuseum.com.

Watch for the next historic article on Bikernet sponsored by the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, next week.—Wilburn Roach

WHAT ARE THE ODDS– Are you one of those people (like me) who feel that the deck is stacked against them? That the odds of something bad happening to you are greater than for other people?

Well, if it makes you feel better there are lots of other people in the same boat. To prove it Esurance has released an Infographic that the details of a survey that compare the odds of events happening on the road, compared to other activities. The Esurance research shows that:

* The odds are 1 in 11.5 of being pulled over by a cop in a given year. Which are about the same odds, 1 in 12, as pulling an ace out of a shuffled deck of cards.

* However, the odds of getting a ticket once you are pulled over are 1 in 1.8. Which is less than the odds, 1 in 2, of correctly predicting the flip of a coin.

* While out on the road, the odds of getting into an accident while on a thousand mile road trip are 1 in 366. While that may seem high, the odds of dating a millionaire are actually better at 1 in 220.
Esurance states that unfortunately accidents do happen, but if you drive defensively, obey the law and avoid distractions you can decrease the odds of being in an accident. BTW the survey also says that you should be able to go over a decade before getting a ticket. Of course this depends on your location and driving habits.

NEVADA CONSIDERS LANE-SPLITTING, FASTER SPEED LIMITS–
The Silver State may soon adopt the Golden State’s rule on lane sharing, as AB 236 has passed Assembly Committee on Transportation with only two committee members opposing the measure to allow motorcyclists to filter between lanes of slow-moving traffic. California is currently the only U.S. state that allows the practice, though “lane filtering” is commonplace throughout many other parts of the world.

Committee Chair and bill co-sponsor Richard Carrillo (D-Clark Co), a long-time rider, laid out one of the best reasons to split lanes — avoiding a rear end collision — saying “at the end of the day, I want to know that I’m going to come home and not be a part of the pavement or the back of somebody’s truck or car. To me, this really resonates.”

Next step – the bill goes before the full Assembly and the Senate.

In the meantime, the Nevada State Legislature may raise the maximum speed limit from 75 mph to 85 mph has passed the State Senate 15-6 on April 3 and the measure now goes over to the State Assembly for consideration. Introduced by Senator Don Gustavson (R-Sparks), a longtime advocate of bikers’ rights who was awarded the NCOM Silver Spoke Award for Government, SB 191 would fast track NDOT to up the speed limit to 85 mph some open stretches of freeways, matching some 85mph speed limits posted in Texas.

Both of these issues are important, especially how the state handles them. If they educate the population on lane splitting, folks and riders will get it, and it will work for everyone. In addition, if the public is seriously informed on the dangers of cell phone use and driving, lives will be saved without a law.–Wilburn Roach

I’ve been holding on to an extensive safety report for a while waiting on a response from the MRF, because I knew it was false. The report was depressing and full of demands for more laws and restrictions. Below is the response from Jeff Hennie at the MRF, in Washington. If the sky was blue, and these agencies weren’t fighting for more money, they would support FREEDOM, training, and awareness campaigns, and fewer regs. This is why I’ve been working for four years to create an industry council under the MRF umbrella. I will fight for Freedom forever. It works.–Bandit

The CDC and Propaganda

Recently the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) presented a study on motorcycle safety. Specifically the CDC National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention.

The study is nothing new, in fact it is a collection of conclusions drawn from past studies and old statistics, some of the CDC’s conclusions even seem to be drawn from thin air.

CDC uses the same tired worn out examples we have seen again and again. They cite the Florida study that said fatalities increased 63.4% from 2000-2009. Which is true, but like every other instance of using this statistic they fail to mention that motorcycle registrations increased over 100% during the same time frame.

The study goes on to uses imaginary numbers to back up their position that motorcycle helmets save money. They claim that in 2008, the United States saved $3 billion because of helmet use and then claim that the US could have saved an additional $1.8 billion if mandatory helmet laws were on the books. They provide absolutely zero evidence of this supposed financial burden.
The CDC makes no mention of rider education. We know rider education to be the best way to prevent crashes.

Take New Hampshire for example, according to Robert LeTourneau, New Hampshire State Official Motorcycle Education Specialist, they have had 15 fatal motorcycle accidents of riders who took the class since 1990. Thats out of over 44,000 students trained in the same time period and .034% of fatal motorcycle accidents. All with no mandatory helmet law.

Of course, the CDC uses NHTSA’s 1997 base year for motorcycle fatalities, which was also the lowest point of motorcycle fatalities over the past 30 years. In 1997, there were 2,116 fatalities for 3,826,000 motorcycles registered. Or 0.055% of the motorcyclists were killed. In 2010, there were 4,502 fatalities for 8,368,000 motorcycles registered. Or 0.053% of the motorcyclists were killed.

So we have more than doubled the motorcycle population and we have actually reduced fatalities.
The study also contends that states without helmet laws have higher insurance costs. According to Insure.com, that’s not true. Out of the top five most expensive states to buy insurance, only one allows for helmet free riding.

The supposed findings of this study are likely to show up in your local media. Do not let them get away with this.

The MRF encourages you to continue to use the “Fact or Fiction” pieces published by the MRF to combat the junk science in this study and all future attacks on our freedom. You can find the Fact or Fiction pieces HERE.

Read the CDC study HERE.
The MRF is working with Federal legislators on this report and to help redirect the priorities of the CDC on actual disease issues, not transportation.
To keep things in perspective, let me remind you that the CDC is the same organization that uses the idea of a zombie apocalypse as a way of scaring people into preparing for disaster. Seriously, read it here:

PRODUCT REPORT FROM BIKERNET’S FEMALE WELDER–
Hypertherm makes plasma cutters. And their units are awesome. They will have their Powermax45 set up at the Media day event and you can try it out. I tried one at SEMA Show and it made me a believer. I think its an awesome tool for any shop, especially the small shops.

I have a Powermax45 and it can cut through 1 1/2″ steel. But it cuts lighter gauge stuff very cleanly, in fact Jimmy could not believe how clean it cut through 1/8″. Jimmy is so funny, he wouldn’t even try the machine but once he saw how it cut, he’s been carrying around that piece of metal ever since and showing it to his friends.

They have parts, tuners kit, etc. just for the CV carb. Many of these H-D carb parts are obsolete now. So this company is filling in that void.

The 88′ sportster needle is one of obsolete parts.
They make a replica, along with Jets, emulsion tube etc. There is also a short youtube clip on how to work on the carb.

BANDIT TOOK A MINUTE TO SUPPORT THE NRA AND WRITE HIS POLITICIANS—Here’s what the bastard wrote: Guns are not the problem and you know that. Why do we want to be like other countries. We were once a free society. That’s our strength, not more restrictions. We need more training, more education, and more confidence, not more regulations, and restrictions.

Please look at our wonderful country and all the folks who died to keep us free. Freedom is the answer, not regulations. Look at all the laws that don’t work, but just create problems. We are going in the wrong direction. This is actually an opportunity to correct the restrictive direction of the government, save money, and build a more educated, confident society. Everyone would be safer and happier. Seems simple, and I believe it is, in fact I’m working on a grant to prove it.—K.Ball

COLORADO JURY FINDS HELMET MAKER RIDDELL NEGLIGENT–
By Catherine Tsai

A Colorado jury in a lawsuit brought by the family of a severely injured high school football player has found that helmet maker Riddell was negligent in failing to warn players about concussion dangers.

Saturday’s ruling comes as the company faces a similar lawsuit in Los Angeles, plus a complaint by thousands of former NFL players against the league and Riddell.

The jury awarded $11.5 million to the family of Rhett Ridolfi, who suffered a concussion during practice at Trinidad High School in 2008. Ridolfi, now 22, wasn’t immediately taken to the hospital and now has severe brain damage, as well as paralysis on his left side.

The lawsuit was originally brought against Riddell and several high school administrators and football coaches in Las Animas County, about 200 miles south of Denver near the New Mexico border. The jury assessed 27 percent of the fault for Ridolfi’s injuries to Riddell, making the company responsible for paying $3.1 million of the damages.

Three people reached confidential settlements before Saturday’s verdict, but two coaches were still defendants at the trial. Ridolfi’s lawyer, Frank Azar, said Sunday that he’ll ask a judge to find Riddell responsible for paying all $11.5 million in damages.

Riddell said it planned to appeal the verdict but was pleased that jurors rejected allegations regarding helmet design defects.

“While disappointed in the jury’s decision not to fully exonerate Riddell, we are pleased the jury determined that Riddell’s helmet was not defective in any way,” the company said in a statement. It said it believes it designs and manufactures the most protective football headgear for athletes.
Riddell contends that the court erroneously excluded testimony from its warnings expert, though Azar disputed that.

“I think this jury has said they’re in very serious trouble,” said Azar, who said he is representing between 10 and 20 former NFL players with complaints against Riddell.

In October, a jury in Mississippi found Riddell wasn’t responsible for an injury to a high school football player who had suffered a stroke after a practice.

SOME STATES UNDERSTAND FREEDOM–Lawmakers kill motorcycle helmet, cell phone bills

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine lawmakers have killed proposals calling for mandatory motorcycle helmets and banning the use of cell phones by most motor vehicle drivers.

The Senate went along with the House on Wednesday in voting to kill a bill requiring all motorcyclists to wear helmets in Maine. Current Maine law requires motorcyclists under 18 years old to wear a helmet when driving or riding as a passenger.

The House also rejected a bill that would outlaw the use of hand-held mobile phones by drivers.

NEW FROM THE METALSPORT LABRATORIES—“We are mounting mostly 30-inch Vee Rubber tires for customers all over the country, even other wheel manufacturers,” said Russell, the manager of the motorcycle wheel and tire division. Metalsport recently took on Vee Rubber Tires as a distributor in charge of the Western United States. Apparently the 30s must be mounted with a tire machine set up for the size. The large sizes risk slow leaks if installed with tire spoons.

As a service they will mount Vee Rubber tires to any Chip Foose designed Metalsport wheels, along with rotors and pulleys, and ship them balanced and ready to install. “It’s so much easier and safer to ship wheels with the tires mounted,” Russell said.

They have a serious connection for carefully mounting 26 and 30-inch tires. And just recently Richard Hotinger came on board to focus just on the growing Metalsport tire line. Vee Rubber tires now come in whitewall sizes for front wheels including 21, 23, and 26, and in 130, 140, 150, 180, and 200 rears. Check ‘em out.

UNCLE MONKEY FIGHTING CANADIAN INSURANCE MOTORCYCLE RATE INCREASES– I’ve been busy pouring over SGI annual reports to find a way around this rate increase. They claim 52% of bike accidents are the riders fault.

They say the average injury claim in $141,000 of which $77,000 goes to lost wages when the average household (two person family) is only
$72,000. The number of motorcycles increased 50% from 2007 to 2010 but the number of accidents remained the same. Something doesn’t add up.

Insurance is one of the necessary evils of life. While I have an excellent driving record I wouldn’t want to be caught without it. Insurance is there for accidents and the thing about accidents is you never know when they will happen.

We ride the same roads, pass the same drivers every day, but there are those brief moments when a perfect storm of circumstances comes together to cause an accident. Insurance works by everyone paying for the few. If I had to pay in every year to ensure that I had paid in enough for the unlikely event my $300,000 house burnt to the ground I would never get ahead. Hell I don’t even make enough to cover replacing my truck or motorcycle.

SGI wants bikers to pay their fair share. According to SGI we are a province of horrible riders. Over 52% of motorcycle accidents are the fault of the biker. This skewed idea comes from bikers losing control while trying to avoid an accident. SGI prefers we crash into the other car, that way they will have someone else to blame. The ironic thing is that the other driver is insured by SGI as well. Personally, I’ll take my chances with road rash, over slamming head first into some steel cage that cut me off.

We in Saskatchewan will have to wait to see if the rate review board will approve the 45% increase on our plates in the next three years, pushing my plate to around $2400 a year. It doesn’t appear that anyone on the SGI board and the Rate Review ride motorcycles and the misconception that all bikers are “organ donors” seems prevalent, so I might needed to spend my riding time working to earn money to pay for my insurance.

KLOCK WERKS TO EXHIBIT AT BIG BIKE EUROPE– Brian Klock is coming to Europe! This won’t be his first trip to Europe but it will be the first time that dealers and consumers will be able to see the Klock Werks’ range of custom Bagger parts and accessories “up close and personal!”

With the small and distinctly European custom ‘Bagger’ market growing, there is an opportunity for branded custom touring vendors, as riders start to increasingly embrace the FL platform traditionally dominated by BMW and Honda in particular.

“The European ‘twist’ on touring accessories and customization places the emphasis very much on ridability, and that suits our product line perfectly,” Brian Klock said when deciding to embrace the new show concept.

BIG BIKE EUROPE is a three day ‘Pro Grade’ expo offering exhibitors an innovative and unique new parts, accessory, custom, performance and service/workshop business opportunity. It is also the new, permanent host event for the acclaimed AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building (2013 will see the World Championship mark its 10th anniversary and first ever appearance in Europe).

JAY LENO (and His $250,000 Car) Help a Broken-Down Biker in L.A.–

by Brett Malec

Not having the best day on the road? Jay Leno is here to help! The Tonight Show host got his do-gooder on this weekend when he ran into a man having trouble with his motorcycle. The broken-down biker got some roadside assistance from the 62-year-old while stuck on the side of L.A.’s Beverly Glen Blvd.

Leno, who was driving his $250,000 McLaren MP4-12C car, stopped to check if the motorist was OK before helping him get his motorcycle running again. It’s nice to see that Leno, an avid car lover, isn’t letting all the recent talk-show shake-ups get him down.

He’ll have a lot more time to hone his auto-fixing skills when his Tonight Show hosting gig comes to an end next year and Jimmy Fallon takes over.

Starting to get fairly exciting the past few days in the land of sunshine, sweethearts, sandy beaches, and fast bikes. The shift linkage on the 5-Ball Racing Teams Raycer is nearly completed. We’ve changed direction a couple of times the past few days coming up with better ideas?

We started with the linkage on top discovering a leg clearance issue. We relocated the shift arms with the connecting linkage on the bottom, then Juan strategically bent the connecting arm to clear the bottom of the heavy duty Spyke primary cover. Juan, the master fabricator/welder in the Colorado Custom Wheels shop was machining and welding a bung on the frame downtube for a pivot point, when I hauled ass late in the afternoon. Yes Sir, we disconnected the ground strap on the battery to prevent a computer melt down. We may have it? Never give up.

We used a piece of all-thread as the shift arm connector. Looked like shit without a cover, butttttt, just happened to find a length of braided fuel line in the trash can that covered the unsightly threaded area. Still need to clean the frayed ends and wrap them with heat shrink.

The Turbo Charged Twin Cam Raycer is in line at Race Tech Suspension Center located in Corona, Ca. located less than 30 miles from the shop where the pros will magically rebuild or replace each and every suspension component from axel to axel, align the wheels and set the spring rate for a smooth-as-silk ride on the street or on the race track. The Race Tech Team asked if two or three days at their would be possible? My answer, “Take as long as necessary,”

The Raycer weighs in at 547 pounds today, with the stock Busa wheels and rotors. The men at Colorado Custom Wheels are machining a custom set of carriers and Composite rotors than will reduce the weight. Lyndall Racing Brakes builds composite rotors weighing 60% lighter than your typical steel rotor with no rust, no squeak and they stop on a dime every time without fading or warping. Yes, we need weight at Bonneville for traction. The solution is added weight attached to the swing arm on race days. For the street we’ll stay light, quick and agile. If agile is possible with a 60-70-inch wheel base?

Next stop after Race Tech, May 3-4 & 5 will be San Jose with Ron Williams, former owner of Hardtailz, for the necessary dyno time. Ron, Jeff and Kevin kept my hot rod, Bonneville record setting Dyna maintained and tuned perfectly for well over 150,000 coast-to-coast, race track miles. The last 75,000 miles we rolled with the same 124- inch combination as the new Hyperformance/R&R Cycle Twin Cam engine in the one-off Raycer, the last 5,000 miles we added the variable vane, highly predictable Aerocharger Turbo.

Stay tuned for further reports.

Thanks….With one helleva lot of help from my family and Industry friends….Thanks, Thanks, Thanks.

We’re on track for a stellar year on the street and on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

ABATE RECOGNIZED BY ARKANSAS LAWMAKERS–ABATE members from around the state gathered in Little Rock at the Arkansas House of Representatives on April 4, 2013 for the reading and vote on HR1040, which reads in part:

“The House of Representatives commends ABATE, the Arkansas Bikers Aiming Towards Education organization, for raising awareness of motorcycle safety issues; for promoting goodwill and mutual understanding among motorcyclists, law enforcement personnel, and the general public; for being an information resource for its members; and for working to benefit the less fortunate through various events.”

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY–

decamp dih-KAMP, verb:

1. to depart quickly, secretly, or unceremoniously: The band of thieves decamped in the night.
2. to depart from a camp; to pack up equipment and leave a camping ground: We decamped before the rain began.

Bemused not only by Claire’s peculiar dress—or lack of it—by the sheer impossibility of her presence—English ladies simply aren’t found in the Highlands in 1743—the Scotsmen decide to take her with them when they decamp under cover of darkness.

— Diana Gabaldon, The Outlandish Companion, 1999

Louis XII of France at the time was invading Italy much the way his dwarf Uncle Charles had, and we were close enough we could decamp immediately back to Rome in a day or two.

— John Faunce, Lucrezia Borgia, 2010

From the French descamper, decamp emerged in English in the late 1600s. It is a combination of Latin roots dis + campus, literally meaning “away from open field.”

BIKERNET’S TRIKING VIKING TO READ AT COFFEE SHOP– Meet Koz Mraz Author of Midnight Rider on a Graveyard Run
Book Signing Party and Discussion
Sat. April 20th at 2pm

Freeways may have the same numeric designation and stretch for a thousand miles but are changelings in the dark, becoming eerie shape shifters of reflective signs and white lines. The massive freeway signs pop from the gloom like glowing Tarot cards foretelling a foreboding future. This is the story of the Midnight Rider on a Graveyard Run.

My name is Kozmo Marz, I’m a moto-journalist writing a story about the eight million Americans who work the graveyard shift. I was intrigued by these night shifters and graveyard tanker yankers. Where do midnight riders eat and sleep while traversing the dark tarmac at witching hour.

This story is about Truckers, men and women delivering precious cargo. And of course there are the outlaws, hijackers, thieves, prostitutes and last call for alcohol desperados drunk driving one eyed blind.

Finally, the legions of highway patrol protecting innocent travelers. I was on a mission to write their story but the longer I rode the deeper and darker the story became and what I found horrified me. 30,000 motor vehicle deaths are reported yearly and what is this bloody trail of brutally murdered women called the Corridor of Death? Who is abducting 2000 people a day, half a million people in the U.S yearly and what are the motives?

Why is Scientology and a Voodoo Priestess involved? These questions, and many more, I never knew existed now haunt my dreams.

JUDGE RULES DRUNK-DRIVING ILLEGAL ALIEN INCOMPETENT TO STAND TRIAL DUE TO ‘UNIQUE CULTURAL BACKGROUND’–

By Michael Miller

Meanwhile, back in Crazy Town: An illegal alien in Massachusetts who was drunk driving when he hit and dragged a Milford, Mass. man to his death has been ruled incompetent to stand trial.
Insane? Nope. Mentally handicapped? Not even close. “Unique cultural background”? You got it.
Judge Janet Kinton-Walker ruled that Nicolas Guaman’s “unique cultural background” prohibits him from understanding the U.S. legal process. The judge also ruled that Guaman lacks the ability to effectively consult with his attorney. (What, they couldn’t find a Spanish-speaking attorney in all of Massachusetts?)

FOX 25 in Boston broke the story and covered it extensively.
“My first reaction yesterday was devastation,” Maloney said. “I just can’t believe that he was found mentally incompetent based on his education level and unique language. However, after being able to think about it overnight, I’m hoping that this will close whatever loopholes that the defense has to try to appeal or get a retrial if we ever get to a trial.”

“I think this does give the defense attorney the opportunity to request the bail for Guaman,” said Maloney. “Up until now, he has not been eligible for bail, so he may be eligible to be released on bail because of this recent decision.” (Gee, the southern border is just as easy to cross heading south, isn’t it?)

When asked whether she believes Guaman does not understand the court process in the United States because of his language barrier, Maloney said: “No, I don’t believe it. In the past, he’s had other run-ins with the law. He’s been in court multiple times on other charges prior to all this in August 2011, and a Spanish interpreter or no interpreter was used for those hearings and he’s always managed just fine.”

Maloney and her family were scheduled to meet with the DA today to discuss the ruling and what the next steps in the case may be. Guaman pleaded guilty to second-degree charges and is due back in court in June. Because of the court ruling, he may be eligible for bail.

Without a doubt, defense attorneys across the nation will be watching this case and its outcome very closely. If, somehow, Guaman avoids justice – you can count on this defense coming to a courthouse near you – soon.
¿me entiendes?

CORRECTION: The assistant editor made an error and wrote that Guaman pleaded “guilty” to the charge. He actually pleaded not guilty, as pointed out by the author Michael Miller.

This is ludicrous!! This guy had NO BUSINESS even being here, never mind on the road driving, and never mind driving drunk!! He kills an innocent motorcyclist, and now is found incompetent to stand trial due to unique cultural background? WTF??
Why is he still even here????

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY CULTURAL ACTIVITIES TEST LAB–Indian Chief, ‘Two Eagles,’ was asked by a white government official, ‘You have observed the white man for 90 years. You’ve seen his wars and his technological advances. You’ve seen his progress, and the damage he’s done.

‘The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, ‘Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?

‘The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. ‘When white man find land, Indians running it. No taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water, women did all the work, medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing, all night having sex.’ Then the chief leaned back and smiled. ‘Only white man dumb enough to think he can improve system like that.’

Many books have been published about Italian motorcycles, but none has focused exclusively on the Italian motorcycle-based chopper, bobber, trike, and quad custom bike scene – until now.

APRIL 2013 ISSUE OF CLUBHOUSE MAGAZINE IS OUT– This month we published articles from Harley-Davidson, Indian and Ducati for you. On the Cover is a local shop out of Galveston, AM Customs, with one mighty fine Bagger. This is a slick bike that was done all in house. The tin work is especially impressive.

Our feature writer Kanga has a great story in addition to her usual In the Wind article about the Biker Campgrounds they have spent the last 5 years building on their property. If you are in Northeast Texas you will want to check them out after reading this piece. Harley-Davidson just introduced a Softail version of their Breakout bike last month and we have it here for you. This bike is long low and lean with some really great features.

We have some great videos of this bike in the online version of the magazine so you can see it in action. Ducati has come out with the 2013 Superbike 1199 Panigale R. This bike is quite different from most Ducati bikes I have seen and is a racing machine.

Lastly, we brought you news from the capital regarding gun control legislation. Guns are a hot topic right now and are of particular interest to bikers so we wanted to make sure you knew what the Texas Legislature is doing to protect those rights.

Motorcycle Helmet Law Debate Heats Up Again–
Motorcycle Helmet LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Proponents of restoring Michigan’s mandatory motorcycle helmet law heaped more ammunition for their argument on state lawmakers this week, citing a University of Michigan study showing that 26 deaths and 49 injuries could have been prevented if the law hadn’t been repealed last year.

Jim Rhoades of ABATE, the group who led the effort in striking down the restriction, told WHTC’s Diane Coston that their statisticians dispute those figures, and believes that education is more important than helmets in biker safety. Capitol observers don’t believe that this issue would be revived in this current legislative session.

WEEKLY GUN NUT REPORT FROM THE NRA–Statement from Chris W. Cox on U.S. Senate Defeat of Manchin-Toomey-Schumer Amendment
Today, the misguided Manchin-Toomey-Schumer proposal failed in the U.S. Senate.

This amendment would have criminalized certain private transfers of firearms between honest citizens, requiring lifelong friends, neighbors and some family members to get federal government permission to exercise a fundamental right or face prosecution.

As we have noted previously, expanding background checks, at gun shows or elsewhere, will not reduce violent crime or keep our kids safe in their schools.

The NRA will continue to work with Republicans and Democrats who are committed to protecting our children in schools, prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law, and fixing our broken mental health system. We are grateful for the hard work and leadership of those Senators who chose to pursue meaningful solutions to our nation’s most pressing problems.

NEWS FROM JIMS MACHINE–JIMS Force Flow wins Accessory of the Year at the V-Twin Expo!
The Force Flow Cylinder Head Cooler is already making a name for itself.

Jim Thiessen, himself, accepted the Accessory of the Year award for this product at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati this past February.

Remembering Garry

If you are an industry colleague or a JIMS dealer, then you know what Garry Hughes meant to our JIMS family. After a valiant fight true to his character, Garry passed away after battling stomach cancer. Our brother was behind the scenes trying to make every JIMS part “the best that it could be”. Garry will never be replaced and he will always be a part of the JIMS DNA, period. We ask that when you reach down and look at that JIMS tool or part, remember that Garry was a part of it.

Sincerely, The JIMS Family

BIKENET READER COMMENT–November 2011 Interview with Billy Lane

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=10250

The coolest thing I ever saw was him and Indian Larry destroying the bikers build-off trophy, really cool and it was awesome to see two GREAT builders deciding they had both won.

This event was early in my love for bikes, bikers and the biker culture but they showed me the passion that existed. I can’t wait for him to get out. Your article stated that he was to get out in ‘Spring’ of 2013….:) that was good to see …. God Bless Billy ….. we have missed you

BIKERNET MEETS BIKERPICS–This is no coincidence, I’ve been following Bikernet for many years, so I knew who I wanted to hook up with early on. So, are relationships important between digital publications? You bet they are.

I’ve had Bikerpics.org in action since 2003. What started as a simple website simply to host my rally images for a few friends to see, turned into this gigantic gallery area for the events I’ve attended. With a new project happening in my home state, I find myself back here steering the ship with a few very strategic photographers out on the streets giving me a hand with content, which is a great thing! Here at home, I have become a partner with Johnny Mac’s Chopper House (www.johnnymacschopperhouse).

The “House” as we call it, has several rooms. Not only do we build affordable bar hopper style bikes, we specialize in Charity Bikes for companies to raffle. At this moment, we are just beginning another for the Police Survivors Fund of the Philadelphia Fraternal of Police. This is our second charity raffle bike build raising enough money to provide 4400 meals to a local food bank.

Room two houses our very own photo shooting area, which we refer to as, ELITE STUDIOS. In here, we will do our best work, meaning crisp, clear, beautiful shots of custom motorcycles, Hot Rods, and of course stunning models. And again, this content will be shared with our friends at Bikernet.

No rest for the weary though, next week Chopper Dave, another staff photog, is heading up to the Leesburg Bikefest which is actually one on the Nations better three-day events. Great people produce the show, the weather is always perfect, and the crowds are massive. Stay tuned to Bikerpics.org for the immediate coverage & watch for follow up images on Bikernet.com.

If you would enjoy getting a glimpse at some of what I am referring to, here are a few links.

The Grand Opening for Johnny Mac’s Chopper House is Sunday, June 9th just outside of Philadelphia. All day long activities including the bikes of Indian Larry’s shop, of which we believe they will ride in personally, and of course Bikerpics long time model, Michelle Laksh. Please join us!

THE END—The Bikernet security dogs are giving me that, “Feed Me,” look. I better move. I also lift some weights during breaks on Thursdays. Consequently, I’m going to attempt to wrap this up.

Just over the next couple of days you will see a serious batch of content fly at Bikernet from hard-hitting fiction from Uncle Monkey, then a sharp story about JD George by John Gilbert. We have the third chapter of Tail Gunner’s Panhead restoration, then Christine’s report on art from the Sturgis Museum, Coast to Coast Legislative news from Bill Bish, and what else? Cash, the dog, is beginning to growl at me. I better move.

There’s more, like Rogue vintage event in Florida, but I’m taking a break.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
