WILDEST BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for August 20, 2015

Hey,

This will be one of the wildest news columns ever produced on Bikernet. But first I must apologize. I have a tough time learning Facebook, and every time I go there I don’t know what the hell, or how to deal with all that’s going on? Okay, I need a tutorial, or I need to escape. Life just has a tough time giving me the extra moments to deal with Facebook.

Okay, back to the news. There’s so much going on, it’s hard to write it down, and as you do, something else explodes onto the scene.

Let’s hit it, and as always the Bikernet Weekly news is sponsored in part by Cycle Source Magazine, Iron Trader News, and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation.

Enjoy–

ALMOST FIRED MYSELF THIS MORNING—
I’ve been working on the next Bonneville Salt Torpedo, Bonne Belle build story, Chapter 8, including the Mr. Atomic Salt Torpedo concept drawing. I was making good headway and reaching out to Lee Clemens, Kent Weeks, and Mrs. Atomic for input. So, today I mistakenly erased all my work, and I’m forced to start over. The memo will go on my file and someone with dock my pay.

I discovered my error when I tried to add this piece from Mr. Atomic regarding PPG.–Bandit

We have great news in a potential business venture with a PPG brand paint made specific for leathers.

The company approached us as artists because they heard about our involvement with painting leather jackets for 5-Ball. We have a tour set up for the 27th at 3:00 p.m. and we will be doing a sample test piece at their location on a car seat.

The possibilities for this paint are very exciting and can translate from leather jackets to motorcycle seats and so on. They feel they can sponsor us as artists and supply the paint for us in exchange for YouTube videos endorsing their paint.

KENNY RIEDMANN CLAIMS SECOND CONSECUTIVE CSBK PRO SPORT BIKE CHAMPIONSHIP ABOARD HIS TRIUMPH DAYTONA 675R–
Kenny Riedmann, the reigning Canadian Superbike Championship (CSBK) Pro Sport Bike National Champion, successfully defended his crown at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, this weekend claiming the season points title by 47 points.

After securing Triumph’s first ever championship in Canada during the 2014 season, Riedmann riding the #1 plated GE Capital-backed Riedmann Management / Castrol / Triumph Daytona 675R fought back from an early season injury taking over the points lead at the penultimate round. He not only managed to protect his championship lead at the season finale, but also dominated the doubleheader weekend taking the pole position and both Pro Sport Bike wins to ensure the #1 plate will remain his.

“To win the last race and clinch the championship on top of the box is unreal,” said Kenny Riedmann. “I’ve got to thank Triumph Motorcycles. They’ve been behind me since I was an amateur in 2009. Also, thanks to GE Capital, Castrol, Cortech leathers, Shoei helmets, Dunlop Tires, Hindle exhausts, Bickle tire warmers, Scott Cameron Motorsports, my whole team, my dad and my mom.”

After stepping onto the podium once in the first two rounds, Riedmann would go on to win the final five races of the season. He never qualified lower than fourth the entire season, clinching pole for the final three rounds. Also, Reidmann competed in the CSBK Pro Superbike class in 2015 ending the season second in the point standings.

THE SENATOR BROKE DOWN IN ALASKA—

Still Broke down at Fairbanks Alaska.
The Christian cross will hopefully be erected on Friday and be part of the poker run on Saturday.
Sent from my iPhone

Bob is ready for the installation of the cross , on the mount from previous cross . (he wants raffle tickets ) . The ATV trail is appropriate for all vehicles from his home on CTH X to the cross site on Highway 29. Bob Hellar said he would pick up the cross at the Menards treatment plant and get it painted white .

What started out a week ago —only as a primary chain tensioner, radiator hose and starter —-has turned in to a whole new engine needed! Harley company put it on front of the line to be serial number stamped and sent it out. The outpost Harley technician “G”, came in on his day off Saturday to work on it . He’s spending today also. Going over everything. Found bare wires on fuel intake module and two more. It’s a blessing having someone so dedicated working to get us on the road as soon/safely/professionally as possible. (I attended their Pentecostal “Spirit filled “church Sunday with him and his wife Kim!)

God bless you all, for all your efforts to make sure everything pulls together for success.

Much trouble ever since it was interrogated by United States customs ( Port Huron Michigan ) at same time my passport was confiscated -yet to be returned .
God bless you all!

You fit the government profile of a homegrown terrorist; you ride a motorcycle, have long hair and a beard, and you’re a veteran. All three of those indicators cause concern for our current administration, because they know that bikers and especially bikers who are veterans, pose the greatest threat to over-government, illegal encroachments of the Constitution, and the ability to actively oppose violations of the sovereignty of the people and the individual states. God bless, and continue on your path.

WISCONSIN MUSIC FESTIVAL SMASHED–
Wicked Chrome Clothing and many other vendors suffered some serious damage at the hands of mother nature on July 16th at the music festival Rock USA in Oshgosh, WI. Brent Dietzman made this post on Saturday morning when he arrived at his booth:

“75 mile an hour winds came through last night – total devastation. Almost every item of clothing ended up in the water and mud. So much ruined – signs, stereo, parts of the canopy. At a loss. Not only all that loss but a day of lost sales – the best day of the event.

Somehow have to make a negative into a positive and I’m struggling with that at the moment.”

WickedChromeWear.com is offering a 10% discount on all purchases on his website through September 1st to anyone who uses the coupon code 3103 at checkout. This is for brand new merchandise… the items damaged in the storm are not being sold.

STOP the decade of E15 misinformation: Urge your representative to protect your access to safe fuel, Act now!–Take Action

The first 10 years under the Renewable Fuel Standard, established in 2005, represent a decade of misinformation from the ethanol lobby concerning safe fuel for your motorcycle.

To protect your access to safe fuel, urge your representative to cosponsor the RFS Reform Act of 2015 (H.R. 704). The American Motorcyclist Association needs your help to pass this bill. You can send a prewritten email to your representative immediately by following the “Take Action” option and entering your information. The AMA encourages riders to personalize their message by drawing on their own personal riding experiences.

In an effort to prohibit the spread of E15 fuel, which contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume, the AMA supports H.R. 704, sponsored by U.S. Reps. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Peter Welch’s (D-Vt.). The bipartisan bill would amend the Renewable Fuel Standard to recognize market conditions and realities. It also would prohibit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from allowing any station to sell gasoline containing more than 10 percent ethanol by volume and require those already selling it to stop.

In other words, the sale of E15 will not be permitted if this legislation becomes law.

The AMA has repeatedly expressed concerns to government officials and federal lawmakers about possible damage to motorcycle and all-terrain-vehicle fuel systems and engines from the inadvertent use of E15. Allowing the higher ethanol blends to become more readily available greatly increases the chance of misfueling.

In October 2010, the EPA approved E15 for use in model year 2007 and newer light duty vehicles (cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles). In January 2011, it added model year 2001-2006 light duty vehicles to the approved list.

Passing H.R. 704 will help protect the estimated 22 million motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles currently in use on America’s roads and trails that are not approved to use E15, and the riders who depend on safe fuel for their operation.

Preventing inadvertent misfuelings has been one of the AMA’s top priorities, because motorcycles and ATVs are not designed to run on ethanol blends higher than 10 percent, and many older machines favored by vintage enthusiasts have problems with any ethanol at all in the fuel. Using fuel with more than 10 percent ethanol can void the manufacturer’s warranty, potentially leaving motorcyclists with thousands of dollars in additional maintenance costs.

Please join the AMA in the fight for access to safe fuel. More members means more clout against our opponents, and your support will help the AMA fight for your rights – on the road, trail, racetrack, and in the halls of government. To join, go to MailFilterGateway has detected a possible fraud attempt from “cqrcengage.com” claiming to be AmericanMotorcyclist.com/membership/join.

TPJ CUSTOMS New Line of Bike Parts Turns Heads At 75th Anniversary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally–
Northern California Customs Shop Meets With Distributors, Impresses Consumers At Sturgis 2015

TPJ Customs, the complete custom motorcycle shop based out of Northern California, just finished exhibiting its new line of parts in Sturgis City Park during the 75th Anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Their booth featured a custom Indian Scout and a custom Indian Chief Classic to showcase their new parts line.

“It was really significant to be a part of Sturgis’s 75th Anniversary,” said Bryan Schimke, owner of TPJ Customs, “and Indian enthusiasts were really energized about our custom options. All in all, it was an experience we’re not going to soon forget.”

Over the course of the rally, TPJ conducted positive discussions with distributors, sold a lot of parts and received several serious inquiries about ground-up custom Indian bike builds.

TPJ’s new parts line features 17 unique parts for Indian Scouts and Chiefs, including seat mounts, pegs, handlebar risers, ignition and clutch covers, head- and taillight mounts, exhaust tips, seat pans and more. In other words, Indian Motorcycle owners can finally start customizing their bikes with top-quality parts made in the USA, and there are now myriad options and combinations available to them.

“We were very gratified by the interest we got from distributors,” says Schimke. “And the response from rally goers was really positive.”

BONNEVILLE MOTORCYCLE SPEED TRIALS 2015 CANCELED–
This has been a very strange weather pattern year for the Bonneville Salt Flats. One day it can be a mess and three days later it’s ready to rock. I spoke to Bill Woods yesterday and the salt has been under constant investigation. It rained again last Friday, and yesterday the team had members on the salt checking conditions. “We only have access to one track, and no certain pit areas,” Bill said.

Unless the gods of salt racing step up quick, the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials are canceled.

LAS VEGAS BIKEFEST IS COMING TO A DESERT NEAR YOU…

DESPITE RUMORS, JIM MCCLURE NITRO NATIONALS ALIVE AND WELL–
All-Harley Motorcycle Classic Set for 24th Rockingham Renewal

What does Mark Twain, author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, share with Rockingham Dragway’s biggest motorcycle race? Both were reported to be deceased at a time when they were very much alive.

After his obituary prematurely was posted in his hometown newspaper, Twain, one of America’s greatest authors and humorists, is alleged to have quipped that “reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

It’s a line that Rockingham owner Steve Earwood temporarily has adopted as his own after erroneous internet reports that the 24th annual Jim McClure Nitro Nationals, a staple of the fall racing schedule, had been canceled.

In fact, the American Motorcycle Racing Association event is very much alive and well and, as it has for the last 23 years, again will feature the world’s quickest and fastest Harley Davidson motorcycles including the 240 mile an hour Top Fuel Harleys on which the late Jim McClure was a many-time champion.

“The big problem with the internet is that people seem to think that anything that gets on there is accurate,” Earwood said. “Unfortunately, that isn’t true. While we all depend on the web for information, unscrupulous types can, have and will use it to further their own agendas.”

The bottom line, Earwood said, is that the Jim McClure Nitro Nationals, victimized by rain a year ago after veteran Tommy Grimes of Clemmons, N.C., had taken Harley Hall of Famer Ray Price’s hybrid to the No. 1 qualifying position, is expected this year to be especially significant as it is the last point race in the AMRA series.

“There’s always been a big interest in drag racing motorcycles here in the Carolinas,” Earwood said. “So we’ve tried to work closely with the motorcycle community to make Rockingham a destination track for two-wheel competition and for someone to try and undermine those efforts quite frankly ticks me off.

“Hopefully, we can get the word out that the race is on,” Earwood said, “but you know there are going to be people who saw the first item about the cancelation who won’t see this one. That means that we’re probably going to be answering questions about it right up to the time we fire the first Top Fuel bike.”

The race, to be contested Oct. 16-18, is one of the anchors of a busy fall schedule that also includes the Dieffenbach Classic Rock Super Chevy Show presented by Richmond County Tourism and the Roush-Yates Fall Civil Wars.

KLOCK WERKS Patented Flare Windshield Now Available for Indian Chieftain and RoadMaster!

Now Indian Chieftain and RoadMaster model motorcycle riders can enjoy the benefits of touring with a Klock Werks Flare Windshield. The patented Flare™ Windshield design features “hips” at the sides that re-route the wind away from you while adding downforce to the front-end of the motorcycle to improve stability, vs. riding with the stock windshield. The flip at the top of the Flare™ redirects air up and back as clean, less turbulent air for rider and passenger.

“A stock shield simply pushes air. So any air that escapes around it is choppy, turbulent air, that can make your helmet shake, your glasses fly up. Often a rider will think getting a taller windshield will solve the issues. The answer is how the air is directed, and the shape of our Flare™ re-directs the air,” explains Brian Klock. “Many times, a rider doesn’t realize how uncomfortable it is, until they try a Flare™ Windshield. Then they wonder how they ever rode without one!” Besides how well the Flare™ Windshield performs, it looks great too, adding style to the lines of the Indian Models.

Available for Indian Chieftain and RoadMaster in two heights; 10” and 12”, featuring tint, dark smoke, and black options, the Flare™ is easy to Install using stock mounting hardware and maintains stock windshield height adjustability. Klock Werks Flare™ Windshields are made from hard-coated polycarbonate material for lasting durability and is proudly made in the USA.

The Flare™ for Indian is currently available at http://www.kustombaggers.com, through Parts Unlimited dealers, and at events this season.

SONS OF SPEED Takes Sturgis By Storm–
In Preparation For Inaugural Race At Daytona Bike Week’s 75th Anniversary

Sons Of Speed Demos Bikes, Moves Merchandise and Secures Sponsors At Sturgis 75th In Run-Up To Daytona

In preparation for its inaugural race at Daytona Bike Week’s 75th anniversary rally March 11th and 12th 2016, Sons of Speed offered bike demonstrations, photo opportunities and merchandise at the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally®, August 3-9, 2015 at the Broken Spoke Campground. The response was overwhelming.

“There’d been a lot of interest, a lot of sponsors approaching us,” says founder and veteran bike builder Billy Lane. “But the reception we got at Sturgis was incredible. Didn’t matter who it was–general riders, industry people, whoever–everyone I talked to was really enthusiastic about Sons of Speed.”

Inspired by early twentieth-century board-track racers, the Sons of Speed race hearkens back to a stripped down, wide-open approach to motorcycle riding. The inaugural race takes place in March 2016, during the 75th Anniversary of Daytona Bike Week at New Smyrna Speedway’s half-mile, banked racetrack. It will feature up to 9 riders in several different heats, and winners of the heats will advance to a championship round. Each racer will sit astride identical hand-built racing chassis holding pre-1925 1000cc American V-Twin engines, and most racers will customize their machines by fabricating handlebars, exhaust, fenders, foot pegs, and fuel/oil tanks.

Anticipation and curiosity has run rampant since news of the event first broke, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally offered one of the only opportunities to get merchandise and see some of the Sons Of Speed bikes in person before the actual race. Billy Lane rode a 1910 Harley-Davidson board-track racer at the Broken Spoke Campground to great fanfare, and big crowds graced every Sons of Speed information session and photo opportunity. The limited-edition Sons of Speed merchandise on hand sold almost as well as Lane’s Choppers, Inc., line, and Billy’s personal race bike–featuring his Sons of Speed hand-built chassis and 1914 Pope Model L engine–was on display all week at Michael Lichter’s popular Naked Speed Exhibit at the Buffalo Chip.

“I’m both thrilled and humbled by the enthusiasm we’re seeing for Sons of Speed,” says Billy Lane. “It has really taken off–so much excitement. There’s talk of expansion. Sturgis and Daytona have been so generous and enthusiastic–I’m just really grateful to have this opportunity to offer something unique to people as fanatical about motorcycles as I am.”

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE 78TH STURGIS–

With dust settling down from Sturgis Golf Cart Week it is time to look back at the spectacle that was the 75 Anniversary of Sturgis.

Judging from the scorn of golf cart and side-by-side drivers of many of the campgrounds motorcycles are no longer welcomed there. Actually pretty much everyone I encountered on my bike told me that.

The long rows of bikes that use to line up for the concerts have been replaced with golf carts. In fact I heard more talk about so and so’s tricked out golf cart with its booming stereo and cup holders, blinged out wheels and enough flicker LED lights to bring back all your Saturday Night Fever nightmares. Many of them were more than irate that they could not ride their carts into town.

Once away from the campgrounds it was clear that the 75th fell well short of its high projection of 1.7 million. There were large crowds but not really much more than it was in ’03 for Harley’s 100th. If I had to guess I would put the number around 650,000 for the week itself. That number may grow with many who went the week before and the thousands of bikes that went the week after.

There were higher numbers of vehicle fatalities on the highways due to the large crowd but more so because of the huge number of new and inexperienced riders that made their first trip to the Black Hills. Everywhere I went I saw the tell tale full helmets and florescent yellow and orange shirts. They webbled and wobbled their way through traffic trembling with fright when someone would pull up alongside them on Lazelle Street.

I do have to commend the City of Sturgis on their handling of traffic. I expected it to be a nightmare heading east of the city to the larger campgrounds but the city had the traffic dialed in to almost perfection. Traffic moved swiftly in and out of town even with the large crowds.

So where does Sturgis go from here? Well one thing is painfully obvious is that the Sturgis that many of us loved and cherished in recent years will be all but gone in the next couple of years. Sturgis will roll on but much different than we had become accustom too.

Sturgis grows and changes from its humble begins of hill climbing and racing to the rambunctious rowdiness of City Campground to the swarm of parts venders who would vacated to Rapid City replaced with t-shirt and leather venders.

Harley Davidson has laid claim to Sturgis and rightfully so because it was their heartbeat that rumbled through the hills. The thing is many of the new riders were only coming because it was now an official Harley Event. I was never more than an arm’s length away from someone disheartened because the cool Sturgis t-shirt they had found was not a Harley Davidson Sturgis shirt and that they were not standing in a Harley tent. They would leave it, ask where the actual Harley dealership was and head there to spend their money.

It is the writing on the wall. Rapid City for all its aftermarket venders the clear majority of the crowds were inside the dealership buying. Harley Davidson, Indian, and Victory have already filled large areas of Sturgis downtown. It will only be time before Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki dip their toes into the stream following the lead of the influx of golf cart and atv dealers.

The wild bikers who are the weirdoes and freaks we call friends have been pushed out by corporate replaced by public palatable HOG members, white collar riders drinking lattes and craft beers. It is the dawn of the polo shirt Sturgis. It will mean that Sturgis may not be as welcoming as it has been to us unwashed heathens. It means leaving our bikes behind to make room for golf cart parking. It means more high priced dealer approved items, $50 steaks and $20 craft beers; dealer led safe rides through the Black Hills in people movers instead of bikes. Sturgis will go on – maybe even bigger than before.

What does it mean for the rest of us? Well there are still the small local rallies and the Smoke Out, Born Free and Hazard County. Maybe start your own and see where it takes you. Maybe polo Sturgis is just the excuse you need to dust off that nice Harley button up shirt someone gave you for Christmas.

Maybe you could be that haggard grey beard on a bar stool in Sturgis talking about the good ol’days before Sturgis sold out. No matter what you decide, no matter what Sturgis evolves into there are still a lot of miles to be ridden, lots of stories to be shared.

WACO JUDGE RULES BEING IN A CLUB A CRIME–
The first examining trial related to the Waco shooting concluded with the judge finding sufficient probable cause for the arrest and charge of a married couple present at the Twin Peaks on May 17, 2015. There was no evidence presented of either individual committing an actual crime.

The judge found probable cause to arrest Mr. And Mrs. English as parties engaging in organized criminal activity. Their association with one of these groups, displayed through a support patch, was determined to be sufficient probable cause to send the question to a grand jury to consider an indictment. It was also asserted that members of criminal street gangs do not have the legal right to carry weapons even if they have a concealed carry permit.

I find this decision disturbing. Although just an examination trial, not the criminal trial, based on this logic members of legal associations can be charged with organized criminal activity based on others actions, with no evidence that they actually participated in a crime.

Law enforcement nationwide has been influenced by Waco, some conducting militarized police operations in response to clubs simply riding through town. The implications for the 1st Amendment should be obvious and they are not positive.

GUS ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL–

George Christie Jr. was born in 1947 in Ventura, California to a family of Greek immigrants and grew up an only child. From an early age, he was fascinated by motorcycles and outlaw culture, and by the time he started school his intelligence and rebellious attitude set him apart from his peers. As a teenager, he became an avid surfer. When one of his surfing buddies showed up at the beach one day on a Harley-Davidson, George knew what he had to do. In 1966, despite the objections of his father, he bought his first bike–a 1957 Panhead–for $200. He was soon hanging around with Ventura outlaw bike club The Question Marks and famous motorcycle customizers Von Dutch and Dick Woods.

As George puts it, “some people run away and join the circus. I ran away and joined the Hells Angels.” He became a full-patch Hells Angel in the Los Angeles charter in 1976.

He famously carried the Olympic torch in the 1984 Los Angeles Games and spent a year in solitary confinement in prison on numerous charges in 2001. In 2011, Christie resigned his presidency of the Ventura charter and left the club. He was immediately excommunicated by his former brothers. George spent another 18 months in prison from 2013-2014 for conspiring to firebomb two Ventura tattoo shops.

George currently serves as a consultant on organized crime for CNN.

NEW SUPREME BIKERNET BAGGER EDITOR EXCEPTS POSITION WITH BIKERNET– I am happy to announce that I have accepted the position of Editor of Bikernet Baggers. It’s the Bikernet team site devoted to performance, custom, and travel with touring motorcycles. We cover new products, high performance gear, tech articles, tips and installs, road stories, travel recommendations, and all things I have a long history of being involved in.

Bandit and I have worked together since the ’70s when he was editor of Easyriders and I was a contributor. When he started Bikernet I became a contributor/tech editor, and recently this opportunity surfaced to improve what is already a sharp site.
I have a few ideas on how to improve some of the sections, and of course I am open to suggestions. We want this to be the sharpest, most resourceful, fastest-moving touring site on the planet.

I will start off by inviting you to go to http://www.bikernetbaggers.com/default.aspx
Across the top you will see buttons for the Free Departments, Cantina, Studio, Shop, Blog, Sponsors, and Travel. These will be places where some of you may want to get involved. I will also be actively looking at new products to evaluate and in some cases accepting articles from people in the lifestyle.

I will make this site enjoyable, fun, and packed with info. Plus you can reach me 24/7.
It may take a few days to get things all hooked up but my e-mail will be rogue@bikernet.com [Note from Lisa: It is up and working.] and in the mean time we can use Facebook or rogue@bikerrogue.com.

EXCLUSIVE HILLARY CLINTON ARCHIVES– This ill-tempered, violent, loud-mouth, hateful and abusive woman wants to be your next President, and have total control as Commander and Chief of our Military, the very Military for which she has shown incredible disdain throughout her public life.
Remember her most vile comment about Benghazi: “what difference at this point does it make?”

Remember what class Laura and George W. Bush brought to the White House and how they treated the Secret Service detail and the military. They even spent some Christmas holidays at Camp David instead of the Texas ranch so the Secret Service detail could spend the holidays with their families.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–
A farmer has called a guy to come out to his farm to inseminate one of his cows. As he has to plow up 40 acres that day and wont be there, he tells his blonde wife to show the fellow which cow it is.
How will I know which one she says, and he says I’ll show you which one and takes her out to the barn. He has a lot of cows and stalls. He walks to the stall with the target cow and says, this one, and drives a nail in the post next to the stall so she will know which one to look for.

The next day the guy arrives to do the deed. The wife takes him to the barn and points to the nail in the post and says that one and turns to leave. The guy says to her, whats the nail for?

She says,,, I guess it’s to hang your pants on.

I don’t like making plans for the day. Because then the word “premeditated” gets thrown around in the courtroom.

I didn’t make it to the gym today. That makes 3,267 days in a row.

Dear paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers. If you find one, what’s your plan?

STURGIS WEDDING ROCKS–

I have been told there were a lot of weddings in Sturgis during the 75th rally. I am happy to say that I got to attend the one of two very dear friends.
Chris Callen and Heather Walker got married on August 8, 2015 at Hot Rod Lake which is part of the Broken Spoke Campground. The ceremony was performed by Jack Schit.

Just prior to the wedding a storm hit the area which is not uncommon, but it quickly cleared up and stayed that way, a good sign that the wedding was being blessed.

Many friends and family attended the ceremony and reception. Chris and Heather are on their honeymoon and sharing the trip with friends on Facebook.

ASCOT RACING IS GONE BY THE HISTORY IS BEING HONORED– November 17, 1990|SHAV GLICK | LA TIMES STAFF WRITER

Ascot Park, the busiest dirt race track in America for 33 years, comes to the finish line Thursday.

The 50th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix for United States Auto Club midget cars figures to be the last of more than 5,000 main events held since the track opened at 182nd and Vermont Avenue in 1957.

Its demise, brought on by inevitable urban and industrial development, will leave a void for Southern California motor racing enthusiasts who have seen the Ontario Motor Speedway, Riverside International Raceway and the Lions, Orange County, Irwindale and San Fernando drag strips disappear in recent years for similar reasons.

Only Saugus Speedway, which runs primarily stock cars from April to October, remains in Greater Los Angeles.

Ascot Park is no Taj Mahal. It is a grubby little place with a half-mile oval laid out on a dump site in South-Central Los Angeles. Engine fumes that sting the eyes, drifting dust and flying dirt clods are part of the show.

Ascot isn’t done yet. We met with Chris JC Agajanian who owns the Ascot brand and never gave up on his dad’s dream. Recently Chris is developing a very cool apparel line. I spoke to Don Whalen last night and his Indian/Zucker Special built by Chuck Vernon was tested on Ascot during the day.–Bandit

LOVE JUGS TESTIMONIALS–
“Look What Magazines and Independent Testers are Saying about Love Jugs”

“My Love Jugs fans withstood the harshest conditions I endured. Love Jugs are 100% waterproof outdoor rated fan motors, and my trip confirmed that! If it was not raining, it was as hot as Hades. They will actually run while submerged underwater as can be seen on their website: http://love-jugs.com/videos/ Believe it or not, some competing systems use indoor rated fans, which will short out when exposed to water – even during a washing.

Jimmy and Pat Kay
Producers of Two Wheel Thunder TV – Contributing Editors for National Magazines

I have no relationship of any kind with the makers of Love Jugs. A short time ago I did an independent Dyno test, basically, a product test, on the Love Jugs engine cooling system.

We put the Love Jugs on a 2013 FLHX Street Glide, fully broken in, with about 1,700 miles on it. What we did on the test was to bring the bike up to a high operating temperature, of almost 400 degrees, that a rider would encounter in a traffic situation.

We maxed out the cylinder temperature, maxed out the oil temperature, and got the bike totally heat soaked. Then, with the fans off in the Dyno room, I let the bike idle with the Love Jugs cooling system installed and on. Amazingly enough, within one minute the cylinder temperature dropped 30 – 40 degrees.

The oil temperature dropped as well. As we left the bike sitting in idle with the Love Jugs on, the bike actually kept cooling off. Ultimately the temp went down almost 100 degrees before we turned the unit off. Love Jugs is well built, looks cool and it really works. I would recommend Love Jugs.

TRIUMPH PARTNERS WITH VETMOTORSPORTS TO PROVIDE
OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISABLED COMBAT VETERANS

‘Thank-A-Hero’ program offers military, police officers and firefighters $500 voucher with the purchase of a new motorcycle.

Triumph Motorcycles America has been racing in support of our nation’s heroes throughout the 2015 season, as well as saluting them with the relaunch of the ‘Thank-A-Hero’ program.

Triumph has partnered with VETMotorsports, a non-clinical outreach program that honors and empowers disabled combat veterans by encouraging active participation in motorsports. Through Castrol’s VETMotorsports Performance Match Fund, the on-track success of the Triumph factory-backed teams in both AMA Pro Flat Track and MotoAmerica has earned VETMotorsports $7,750 thus far this racing season, which wraps up at the end of September.

VETMotorsports has been embedding veterans as crew members with the Latus Motors Racing MotoAmerica and Bonneville Performance Flat Track teams throughout the season. Adding to the success of the program, Sgt. Chad C. was hired on for the entirety of the MotoAmerica season with Latus Motors Racing.

“We have a number of veterans on staff at Triumph and we love what VETMotorsports stands for and does. Triumph is honored to be able to help get more veterans involved in motorsports,” said Matt Sheahan, COO of Triumph Motorcycles America. “The Thank-A-Hero program is also another way we’re extending our gratitude to our veterans.”

The Triumph ‘Thank-A-Hero’ program recognizes active duty military, retired or honorably discharged former military service members, police officers, and firefighters by offering a $500 voucher with the purchase of any new Triumph motorcycle. Vouchers can be used in-store or online towards the purchase of Triumph parts, accessories, clothing or merchandise. This program runs through September 30, 2015, and can be combined with any other offers.

Explore the complete line of Triumph motorcycles and all current consumer promotions available at www.TriumphMotorcycles.com. For immediate support to questions, Triumph offers the industry’s first 24/7 Customer Support line at 888-284-6288 and also Live Chat via www.TriumphMotorcycles.com.

NEVER KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT AROUND HERE— The metal just arrived from the Famighetti brothers, both Hamsters, for the Bikernet deck. It’s going to be amazing.

We just received more contributions from Deano captured from Choppers Magazine. A report on Von Dutch from the ‘60s will find its way to the Digital Discovery area of the Cantina.

I’ll start to straighten out the Atomic article tomorrow.

As you can see lots is going on in the Cantina. Which means I need to write another Cantina episode. I know I have a thread rolling, but the Smoke Out, Sturgis, and Oregon jumped in the way. I need to get back to it.

Have a helluva weekend.
