VALERIE THOMPSON SHATTERS 300 MPH AT BONNEVILLE– to become “World’s Fastest Female Motorcycle Racer.”
Seven-time land speed record holder named world’s fastest female motorcycle racer with award-winning top speed of 304 mph at Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials
Valerie Thompson earned the title of world’s fastest female motorcycle racer on September 1 at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials with a blistering one measured mile average speed of 304 mph (489.66 km/h) riding the famous Denis Manning designed “7” Racing streamliner.
After three mandatory license qualification runs, Thompson scorched the salt with two memorable runs over 294 and 304 mph. Thompson’s highest exit speed exceeded 313 mph, earning her the Top Speed of the Event Award and new title as the World’s Fastest Female Motorcycle Racer.
“I’ve dreamed about this since I first started racing. Thank you (Bandit) for suggesting me to Denis – I’ve always wanted to ride his streamliner,” said Valerie. “This never would have happened without Denis Manning and team owners, John Jans and Joe Harralson. I can’t thank them and the entire “7” Racing crew members enough for all their hard work during the competition.”
“Joe Harralson and I couldn’t be happier with these results. Valerie has the talent and drive to be the fastest motorcyclist in the world … period,” says John Jans, team owner of “7” Racing.
The four-day Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials is the premier motorcycle land speed-racing event of North America. The AMA and FIM sanctioned event offers national and world speed record opportunities. Event organizers honored Thompson and Team “7” Racing with the “Top Speed of the Event Award” while celebrating her new title.
“Valerie has quickly adjusted from racing a conventional motorcycle to driving a streamliner with twice the horsepower, she is a natural racer. More importantly, she reached our goal of exceeding 300 mph on the 3-mile short course vs. the 5-mile run-up streamliners normally require to reach top speed,” stated bike designer Manning. “Our goal is creating history by making “7” the fastest motorcycle in the world again. Valerie achieved our objective of going faster with less track, I can’t ask for more than that from any driver,” added Manning.
“It’s very different cause our body helps where the bike goes – in the streamliner its all in the vision and hand controls since I’m strapped in there so tight,” said Valerie. “Also you cannot feel how fast your going like on a bike, but I’m loving every moment… Denis and John are great teachers and have taught me well…still learning!”
AUSSIE BIKE MARKET POWERS ON–
The Australian motorcycle and ATV market grew strongly in the first half of 2016, with the latest sales figures revealing a 3.5 per cent increase over the same period last year.
The ongoing appeal of ATV and SxS (Side by Side) vehicles specifically for farm and agricultural use, but also recreationally, was strongly evident with 3.6 per cent more sold than in the first half of 2015.
The hugely diversified motorcycle market, with its myriad of models from cruisers to café racers, super-motards to motorcrossers, maintained strong momentum overall. The off-road motorcycle market rose 4.3 per cent over the first six months of 2016, while the road bike market increased 4.4 per cent. The only decline was in the scooter market, which fell 11 per cent compared with the same period last year.
Japan’s Big Four of motorcycle manufacturing maintained their strong overall market presence. Honda was the leading volume manufacturer again with 23.2 per cent of the market, followed by Yamaha with 20.1 per cent, and Kawasaki (10.1 per cent). Suzuki and Harley-Davidson had an 8.9 per cent share each.
The Chief Executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Tony Weber, said that the diversity of models, affordability, and the ability of manufacturers to produce machines to cater for such a wide range of applications were key ingredients to the market’s continued growth.
“Road bikes accounted for almost half of the new motorcycle market, holding a 43.4 per cent share. Off-road motorcycles accounted for 31.2 per cent, ATVs for 21.2 per cent and scooters for the remaining 4.2 per cent.”
Harley-Davidson was again the top seller in the road motorcycle market, selling 20.4 per cent of the road motorcycles sold between January and June 2016. Harley-Davidson was followed closely by Honda, which sold 19.6 per cent, Yamaha third with 15.4 per cent, followed by Kawasaki (11.5 per cent) and BMW (7.3).

It is important to choose the proper size grips for your motorcycle. Please note that any pair of motorcycle grips has two different inside diameters. The grip for the left side (as if you were sitting on the bike) of the handlebar has a smaller diameter, and the right side grip has a larger inside diameter to fit over your throttle tube.

MORE NIGHTTIME RESTRICTIONS FOR TEENAGERS– Last week’s newsletter on the new Center for Disease Control guidelines to states with regards to nighttime driving for teen drivers brought in some great comments for discussion. We thought we would share a few thoughts covering both sides of the issue.

In sports or any other activity where reflexive motor skills are important, there is a very significant advantage in developing skills at a younger age. I have seen the evidence in sports that when the brain is trained to execute motor skills at a younger age, the attainable skill level is much higher.
I see the evidence of very low driving skills in most drivers every day and inhibiting young drivers from getting experience at earlier ages is only going to create more unskilled drivers on the road at all ages. Young drivers are taught to be afraid of everything – this promotes panic and causes freezing behind the wheel when anything unusual happens.
I suggest the exact opposite approach:
There is a huge difference between fear and respect. You cannot handle a situation well if you fear it – only if you respect and understand it.
Driver’s education should be teaching teens at a young age on a track to handle cars – not just parallel parking, but handling slides and spins on a skid pad, exercising emergency maneuvers and making quick decisions.
I would also suggest creating ice-covered training areas for handling vehicles in those conditions (yes, that would be more expensive in Southern states). That would produce drivers with drastically higher skill levels, with quicker, more beneficial reactions and those skills could follow them the rest of their lives especially if they were programmed into their neurological systems when practiced at a young age.
Imagine roads filled with well-trained, skilled drivers – what a difference that would be… I definitely believe death tolls would fall significantly if that training were implemented.

Did you ever consider that making driving a hassle is an explicit goal? I have noted several articles in mainstream media celebrating that the percentage of young people who have not learned to drive is higher than in the past. Given that many in this same media favor reliance on public transportation and consider the private auto to be an environmental disaster, should we be surprised?

As with their highly-politicized anti-gun crusade, one has to question CDC “mission creep” into areas that have absolutely nothing to do with medical issues. Clearly, actual diseases are still with us, and the CDC should refocus their resources on THAT.
Isn’t it odd that despite the considerable reduction in teen driving brought about by all these restrictions, insurance for them remains be as high as it ever was?
I remember being pull over by police in 1961 in MA, when I was 18, to see if I was 18. Then they called for back-up….wouldn’t say why.
Then they searched my car!
No probable cause….nothing found.
Tied me up for an hour such that my parents, who expected me home from work (Howard Johnson’s), called the police looking for me.
They called the State Police, who didn’t know that I was being held up by the local police (Ashland, MA).
They called hospitals too, to see if I’d been in an accident.
This was way before cell phones! (-:
When I got home they were freaked out….it was 1:30am by then…..
They couldn’t believe that I was late BECAUSE of the police so they called them to verify it.
The whole event should have never happened!

Big Thanks for the classy ladies, the enlightenment, entertainment, eye candy, information, and the revival of the bagger segment. Maybe some owner’s trikes and what they are doing cosmetically and performance wise could beef up the trike segment.
I’m at the age where a lot of my friends are going to trikes. Most wish for a little more performance while others dress them up and enjoy the ride.
My bike is twelve years old and of course I like to see things about and for these bikes. Development for the older bikes has pretty much stopped for many reasons in the aftermarket, but I would like to still get an improvement here and there that only seems available to the later model bikes. Thanks again.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON XR750 CARRIES COOLBETH TO THRILLING VICTORY ON THE SPRINGFIELD MILE– Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Wrecking Crew rider Kenny Coolbeth Jr. executed a perfect last-lap pass to score a thrilling victory in the Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines main at the historic Springfield Mile.
Aboard a Zanotti Racing/Gator H-D Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycle, Coolbeth stalked race leader Bryan Smith for the entire 25-lap main before making his move for the win as the pair blasted out of the final turn on the legendary dirt oval at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The strategy paid off for the veteran Harley-Davidson racer as Coolbeth beat Smith to the finish line by 0.009 seconds.
“I knew I wouldn’t get all the way around him going down the straightaway like a legit draft pass,” said Coolbeth, who has now won five times at Springfield, “so I buried it off in there just like I did when I beat him the other time and it worked out.”
Coolbeth, a three-time AMA Grand National champion, has more wins than any active rider in series. The win at Springfield is the 36th of his career.
Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Factory Team rider Brad Baker finished fifth at Springfield, 1.357 seconds behind Coolbeth. Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Wrecking Crew rider Jake Johnson finished in 13th place on the Zanotti Racing/Classic H-D Harley-Davidson XR750.
The Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew riders compete with legendary intensity befitting the long history of Harley-Davidson racing. TIPTON CONTROVERSY–Video Proves Nothing Is Removed From Tipton’s Body.
Although the chance of Zachariah receiving justice posthumously is small, the truth deserves to be heard in hopes that the next murder by the Iron Order will not go unpunished. This is the Part 2 of a Motorcycle Profiling Project series analyzing the glaring discrepancies between the State Attorney’s review and uncut video footage.
The State Attorney’s review of Tipton’s killing first lies about the Black Pistons rendering aid. Indeed, the State Attorney contends that the Black Pistons fled after gunshots were fired and none of them rendered assistance to their fallen brother. We know this is not true, as incontrovertibly proven by uncut video footage. So what other deceit is hidden within the pages of this review?
State Attorney Implies Tipton Had a Weapon.
The State Attorney insinuates that Tipton was armed and Black Piston members removed the evidence before police arrived. The State Attorney’s review, page 4:
“One member of the Black Pistons can be seen going over to Zachariah Tipton’s body and then later handing off a cut or vest with patches signifying membership in the Black Pistons club, with what looks like something rolled up inside. A member of the Black Pistons is handed the vest and leaves the scene on his motorcycle. It is unknown if something was rolled up in the vest.”
If it is unknown, why include it in the statement of facts? The prejudice is deeply concerning, particularly when the actual facts are quite different, and particularly when it contradicts the State Attorney’s claim that the Black Pistons fled and didn’t return to Tipton after he was shot.
Video Proves State Attorney Lied….Again
Surveillance video obtained from discovery indeed shows a Black Piston hand a vest to another member. But it is not rolled up and nothing is visibly removed from Tipton’s person.
Beach Marine Video 8 at (9:38): A Black Piston rendering assistance to Tipton can clearly be seen removing his vest and handing it to another member. The vest is open and hanging, not rolled up, and there is nothing concealed or hidden. The video also proves the Black Piston rendering assistance is never alone with Tipton. A nurse and a bartender were present the entire time and removing a weapon from Tipton undetected would not have been possible.
Why Would The State Attorney Imply Tipton Was Armed?
The State Attorney’s so-called “statement of facts” is intended to create an extreme prejudice, particularly when translated to the media and the general public. Although Tipton was unarmed, it cannot be proven otherwise, implying that there was a successful conspiracy executed by the Black Pistons to remove a firearm from Tipton creates negative sympathy or calls for justice.
On the other hand, if people based their perceptions on what could be proven, the world looks substantially different. If the world understood that Tipton was unarmed and shot in the head during a fistfight there may have been more public outcry. If the general public realized that national officers in the Iron Order have issued statements encouraging members to provoke conflicts with other clubs in order to “destroy them” because they won’t get prosecuted, maybe there would have been more outrage…

There is finally some information coming out that it is being mishandled. We knew that was happening from the beginning.
Hopefully we will be able to help bring this to the attention of our readers and pressure put on law enforcement in Jacksonville Florida to arrest and prosecute the person or persons responsible for this.

Dry Fire Friday Episode 5: M1A(TM) Trigger Press
It’s another week-ending episode of Dry Fire Friday.
Steve Horsman here – And I’d like to walk you through a basic dry fire drill for M1A rifle fans. It’s a fundamental drill that’s good to practice before heading to the range after a short or lengthy break from shooting.

Drill Level: Beginner
Drill Comments: If it’s time to hit the range again after something of an absence, it can be a good idea to re-familiarize yourself with your rifle; from basic operation to it’s trigger. Reacquaint yourself with how the gun feels and works.
Start with a basic trigger pull, 10-15 times at minimum. Keep your eye on the sights and press the trigger smoothly. Take some time to work the action as well. And if you plan on fast-action, multiple-target engagements at the range, make sure to take an aggressive stance throughout these drills while moving the rifle from one target position to another.
Take it from me – when it comes to these critical fundamentals, practice makes perfect.

Dry-Fire Safety Rules
1. Ensure the gun is unloaded, remove the magazine, retract the slide and check that there is no round in the chamber
2. If practicing with magazines, unload all rounds from magazines
3. Remove all ammunition/loaded magazines from the area
4. Find a safe area/direction to practice
5. Remove all distractions – phones, family members, pets, etc.
6. Double-check that the gun is unloaded any time you do have a distraction or interruption

HINES AND HARLEY-DAVIDSON BATTLE TO PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE WIN AT NHRA U.S. NATIONALS–
Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle® Riders Hines and Krawiec Seeded 1-2 as Season Heads Into Countdown Playoffs
Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines charged from the middle of the pack to earn a hard-fought Pro Stock Motorcycle victory at the NHRA Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway.
After qualifying seventh, Hines battled his way through the field as his Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycle gained performance in the hands of the experienced Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team. The win moved Hines into the Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead and makes the defending champion the top seed heading into the six-race 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship playoffs.
“The Screamin’ Eagle team really had to work hard to get my V-Rod running right today, but we saved that best run for the final,” said Hines, who also won at the prestigious U.S. Nationals event in 2012. “This race is our biggest show. It’s the Super Bowl or Indy 500 of drag racing. It’s a long weekend and there’s so much tradition and everyone is racing hard; it’s really challenging to win here on Monday. To do it twice and put the Harley-Davidson bike back in the winner’s circle is a real honor.”
After five rounds of qualifying, Hines had posted a best run of 6.864 seconds, good for the seventh spot in the 16-bike field. According to the NHRA no rider has ever won the U.S. Nationals from that deep in the qualifying order. Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec qualified third with a run of 6.848 seconds on the team’s other V-Rod race bike.
Hines has won five times in seven final-round appearances in 2016, and now has 47 career Pro Stock Motorcycle final-round victories.
Krawiec lost in the second round and gave up the Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead he’d held all season to Hines. The points standings will re-set as the top-ten riders in the Pro Stock Motorcycle field qualify for the Countdown playoffs, with a 10-point increment between each rider and a 20-point bonus to Hines for being the points leader.
“Earning the number-one seed is a 30-point swing for me,” said Hines, “and we met our goal of getting the two Screamin’ Eagle V-Rods in the Countdown field and seeded 1-2. The Countdown brings out the best in every competitor and we can’t let anyone sneak up on us. This is a very stout field. We have our work cut out for us if we want to repeat as champions.”

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE MAKES HISTORY AGAIN WITH RACING DEBUT OF INDIAN SCOUT FTR750 AT THE RAMSPUR WINERY SANTA ROSA MILE AMA PRO FLAT TRACK RACE ON SEPTEMBER 25
Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, today confirmed that its all-new Indian Scout FTR750 race bike will make its racing debut on Sunday, September 25 at the Ramspur Winery Santa Rosa Mile AMA Pro Flat Track race in Santa Rosa, California. The race takes place at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds at 1350 Bennett Valley Rd. in Santa Rosa, with gates opening at 11 am PDT.
The Indian Motorcycle FTR750 will be piloted in its debut by AMA flat track racing legend Joe Kopp. Joe is one of 15 riders to complete the Dirt Track “Grand Slam,” with victories on short track, TT, half-mile, and mile courses. In addition to his 2000 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship, he took the 1999 and 2000 AMA 600 Hotshot and Supertracker Championships. The Indian Scout FTR750 will feature Kopps’ #3 for the weekend.
Indian Motorcycle accelerated its historic journey toward the official return to professional flat track racing with the public debut of the Indian Scout FTR750 on August 7 at the legendary Buffalo Chip venue in Sturgis, South Dakota. On-hand for the epic, invitation-only event were Bobby Hill and Bill Tuman, two surviving members of the legendary Indian Wrecking Crew, both AMA Hall of Famers, along with hundreds of motorcycle industry dignitaries and members of the press. The Debut of the Indian Scout FTR750 featured the #51 as a nod to Bill Tuman being the last factory racer to win a National on an Indian Motorcycle.

BOB NICHOLS 1937 INDIAN WINS AGAIN
A 1937 Indian, built by Bob Nichols, 94 years young, and piloted by Jim Ottely, won the Vintage 1/2 Mile, TT and Drag events at Sturgis.
In fact the bike has won 26 vintage races in a row. Bob said that after the 1st heat at Sturgis, a Harley Rider asked Jim to slow down so they could have a closer race. Nichols also built the aluminum rods and cams in a 1940 Indian, owned and ridden by Jim Robinson for a World’s record, 149.98 MPH at El lMirage.
He built an Indian Flathead that turns 9000rpm and is working on one that he hopes will turn 10,000 rpm.
Bob may be our oldest active Trailblazer. He comes to all the banquets, even when he had to sneak out of the hospital.
He raced speedway with Jack Milne and Lammy Lamoreaux. Some races were held at a triangular track at Western and Slausen. He won the National in 1941 and still has the trophy.

Phoenix residents Kerry Alter and Loretta Flores set four new FIM World Speed Records with KAR tuned Suzuki and Ducati
Kerry Alter and team rider Loretta Flores, celebrated setting four new world speed records in Wendover Utah at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials. Piloting her Kerry Alter prepared Ducati 1299 in the V-Twin 1350 Production class, Flores earned two new FIM records, including Worlds Fastest Mile at 196 mph and World’s Fastest Kilometer at 315 km/h.
Team owner, Kerry Alter, earned two new FIM world speed records on a Suzuki Hayabusa, including fastest one-mile speed at 204 mph and fastest kilometer speed at 334.7 km/h in the 1600 cc Production class. Alter is an accomplished team owner and tuner, earning 19 national and world motorcycle speed records since forming Kerry Alter Racing (KAR).
KAR team driver, Lisa Taylor competed in the 1350 cc Production class riding an Alter prepared Hayabusa, achieving a 212 mph top speed before a mechanical failure ended her record hopes. Taylor and Flores are the most recent female inductees for the Mojave Mile 200 MPH Club.
“I’m very proud and encouraged by our team’s results at Bonneville this year. Loretta worked very hard to earn those two new records. Lisa was on her way in the 1350 cc class with a blistering 212 mph pass before mechanical gremlins ended our day,” said Alter.
The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials is a premier motorcycle land speed-racing competition held annually at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats.
The speed trials are sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association and the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), offering national and world speed record opportunities to motorcycle racers from around the world.

THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF MOTORSPORTS IN THE UNITED STATES–“The really exciting part of this project is that we are uncovering new data and the true economic benefits of racing,” said James Gladden, Executive Director of the Sports Innovation Institute.
The United States Motorsports Association (USMA) and Indiana University Purdue University – Indianapolis (IUPUI) announced today a partnership to conduct the first-ever nationwide economic impact study of Motorsports.
The Motorsports Impact Report (MIR) is slated to demonstrate the billions in economic impacts and other benefits competitive racing provides to the United States. In addition to economic figures the report will include additional Motorsports benefits such as Military Innovations, STEM Education, Charity Contributions, USA Made Products, and Small Businesses as they relate to Motorsports in the U.S.
Over the last several months a research team from the Sports Innovation Institute at IUPUI has worked with the USMA to design the framework and methodology for the study. The modeling, which has been titled ‘Follow the Race Car’, is an approach never taken before and will research much deeper than race event attendance and number of race tracks.
This study will focus on the size, scope and economic activity generated from owning and operating an actual racing vehicle. The research will follow the money trail from the race car to the products, services, equipment and other spending that occurs nearly every weekend across the country.
“The really exciting part of this project is that we are uncovering new data and the true economic benefits of racing,” said James Gladden, Executive Director of the Sports Innovation Institute. “Early indication of the research leads us to some very interesting data within the supply chain around the grassroots portions of competitive racing. I believe the report will be highly valuable to the industry, corporate sponsors, and public officials to gain a greater understanding and more complete story of the integration of racing in our economy.”
Once completed the USMA will release the report to the racing industry and will take the study around the nation introducing the data to elected officials at the local, state and federal levels.

Next week it is school fees and the sole from your steel toe boots finally gives up. Week after that and your driving across the country to pick up your best friend and the washing machine piles it in. It seems like you can’t keep money in your pocket. A hundred here, fifty there, couple hundred now, a couple more over what you expected.
It seems like you are treading for your life in a shit creek. Just when you think you see something firm to grab on to it just squeezes out between your fingers. You’re too proud to ask for help. You’ve been keeping your head above but the onslaught keeps coming.

INTERMOT 2016– a spectacular programme of events awaits motorcycle fans once again.
As an event-oriented trade fair, INTERMOT will once again not only be offering its visitors product displays by companies exhibiting at the fair, but also impressive shows and many other highlights on the topics of motorcycles, scooters and motorsport.
To facilitate this, the entire outdoor part of the Koelnmesse exhibition grounds – 75,000 square metres in total – are being given over to the event, along with special event areas within the halls.
From 6 through 9 October 2016 in Cologne, the general public will be able to try out the current models on the various different test tracks, watch racing action and breathtaking professional stunt shows live.
There are also lots of exciting things for even the youngest fans of two-wheelers to discover and try out, making INTERMOT the end of the rainbow for both motorcycle fans and families who love events. LAS VEGAS BIKEFEST ENTERTAINMENT– Actor Branscombe Richmond to Perform at Las Vegas BikeFest with the “Renegades and Roadies Rock Tour”
Branscombe Richmond, known for his role in the television series “Renegade” and most recently the Showtime Original Series “Roadies” will be bringing his “Renegades and Roadies Rock Tour” to play live at this year’s Las Vegas BikeFest on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1.
Branscombe has been playing live music for over 23 years and describes the type of music he plays as, “Rock and Roll – redone – slapped with bacon grease – pancake syrup all over the top with a funk groove underneath. Musical television at its best – LIVE.”
Branscombe is also co-founder with Las Vegas BikeFest of the Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame with 2016 being the Inaugural Year. This year’s inductees include: Keith Ball, Lorenzo Lamas, Robbie Knievel and Evel Knievel.* The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 1 at 8:30pm at the North Stage in Rally Central.

DOWNER FROM THE AMA— A woman in Georgia’s Catoosa County set her husband’s motorcycle on fire in the family’s garage following a domestic dispute. Thankfully, the Catoosa officer reported, the husband returned shortly and “extinguished the fire with a water hose.”

BMW HONORS THE RIDE AT STURGIS MUSEUM– Unique Homage Goes On Display.
The rally may be fading into the rearview mirrors, but the action is just beginning at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. The newest exhibit is called “Main Street” commemorating motorcycling’s timeless role in reaching the mainstream. To help the Museum “Honor the Ride” BMW Motorrad has brought a unique concept bike dubbed the R 5 Hommage, straight from Europe for an exclusive U.S. debut.
“Synchronicity… The BMW R 5 Hommage project demonstrates just how well the world of historic motorcycles and the current custom scene are in harmony with one another.” says Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall Of Fame Executive Director Myrick Robbins. “The BMW R 5 Hommage really captures the essential spirit of motorcycling of any era and all genres. Plus, it looks pretty cool, too.”
The BMW R 5 comes to the museum for an extended stay after its U.S. debut at “Skin & Bones” – the custom bike show curated by photographer Michael Lichter at the Buffalo Chip during the Rally. “We are honored that BMW Motorrad has entrusted the Museum to share this unique motorcycle,” adds Robbins.
Back in the 1930s the original R 5 was one of the groundbreaking sportbikes of the era and a defining machine in BMW Motorrad’s illustrious heritage. To mark the 80th anniversary of the original, BMW commissioned this special bike. As befits a custom bike, the homage bike was elaborately hand-crafted from scratch by a couple of European bike building legends, Ronny and Benny Noren: the two brothers have been building tailor-made motorcycles for more than 30 years.
At the core there is an original 500cc two-cylinder engine from a crashed damaged race bike…from there the remaining parts gradually took shape in the Noren brothers’ workshop based on sketches by the BMW Motorrad Design Team. In addition to key styling cues, the brothers incorporated some surprises into the project, including a supercharger!
“At its debut, the R 5 was not only a masterpiece of engineering, the clarity of its lines and the elegance of its proportions also made it stand out clearly from the masses,” says Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad. “To this day, the R 5 remains one of the most aesthetically appealing motorcycles in BMW history in my view.”

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION (MRF) REPORT– Government Study Announced on Motorcycle Conspicuity
The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) held its annual meeting this week in Seattle, WA. The theme for this year’s event emphasized the importance of safe driving behavior in an era of rapid technological advancement. More than 500 state highway safety officials and advocates were in attendance including government officials from the Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well as representatives from State Motorcycle Rights’ Organizations and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation.
During the course of the conference, plans regarding an upcoming motorcycle study, funded by money in the highway bill passed by Congress late last year, were announced. Though in the early planning stages, the study is aiming to address motorcycle crash prevention. This is a pivot from previous positions from government officials whose sole focus appeared to be geared towards “safer crashing” through the practice of universal helmet laws.
Though details of the upcoming study remain limited, it appears that it will examine the impact of high-visibility clothing and effects on motorcycle crashes. The project is in the solicitation process but the details suggest a hypothesis aiming to prove high visibility clothing can prevent motorcycle accidents. Details including available data, the entities or contractors conducting the study and when the study will be released will be available in the coming months. Depending on the outcome and findings of the study, legislative and regulatory activity by states and the federal government could follow.

I am concerned about this.
I think it should be a matter of choice and need to see it does not become Mandatory.
Presently military and others have to wear reflective vests.
This will also have a serious Impact on people who wear vests and colors as it would have to be worn over them.
A few years ago there was an attempt in Florida to make a law about making reflective vests mandatory BUT it was beaten before it got out of committee.
Hopefully the MRF and others will work actively to see that NO Mandatory Clothing Be Required By Anyone Riding A Motorcycle.
