Another whacky day in Bikernet Paradise. I just addressed alignment issues on the Mudflap Girl FXR chopper, and I believe she’s ready to rock. Need to chase the speedo connections one more time. We are going to pull the Peashooter engine and ask the master of Magnum engines, Duncan Keller, to reduce the compression and make our Peashooter run.
Ray C. Wheeler is about to roll north to pick up his 97-inch Dyna Glide daily rider and be in the wind once more. He’s crawling the walls. Spitfire sent me the bungs and forward controls we ordered for my son’s FXR, so with the LePera seat in place he will also enjoy splitting Los Angeles lanes. Here’s more good news for Billy Lane fans. A whispered report rolled in this morning: Billy Lane may be awarded work release in March of 2013.

STATES EYE NEW MOTORIST TAXES– Miles you drive could cost you.

States are looking for new ways of taxing motorists as they seek to pay for highway and bridge repair and improvements without relying on the per-gallon gasoline tax widely viewed as all but obsolete.
He expects to see a state vehicle miles-traveled (VMT) tax within the next five to10 years.

The story centers around Patch Kinkade the former president of the Infidelz MC as he is dragged back into “the life” in order to regain the peace between warring clubs. Most of the action will be filmed in the Phoenix area, with a planned release of the film toward the end of this year.
So what could be better than a truly authentic biker flick, produced by the one and only Sonny Barger? MOTORCYCLE SAFETY BILL PASSED BY SENATE–A bill cosponsored by state Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, that would improve motorcycle safety by including awareness training in the state Department of Motor Vehicles required courses has passed unanimously in the Senate.
The bill would amend the Vehicle and Traffic Law to create a motorcycle safety and awareness component to the required five-hour driving course. Its creation was spurred by the recent increase in motorcycle-related accidents in the north country. In this year alone, accidents have taken the lives of four motorcyclists in Oswego County.
“This is just one more step towards making our highways safer for both motorcyclists and those traveling on four wheels,” Mrs. Ritchie said of the bill in a released statement. “By teaching people how to properly share the road, we can cut down on accidents and help save lives.”

CUSTOM BIKE SHOW 2012, Norrtälje, SWEDEN– Press release from Custom Bike Show 2012, June 2. High class at the show but few visitors was the fact at Custom Bike Show in Norrtälje this year. Rain, rain and rain, is perhaps how many will remember the day. The comment of the day among the visitors still were:

2000 courageous visitors and some hundred competitors from Finland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and of course Sweden were represented at the Custom Bike Show in Norrtälje on Saturday. Although the weather there was high standard of the bikes and winners were appointed in classes HD Chopper, Chopper, Custom, Classic, Custom, Classic, Trike and Modified Harley. The winning bikes were of good standard and none of the winners had to be ashamed of the reduced line-up.
Claes Wärefors from Strängnäs became the big winner of today, first as a 1st prize in the Custom Class and then the deserving of to win the jury’s choice. This means that Claes will represent Scandinavia in the World Championships in motorcycle building in Sturgis, USA in August this year. Tickets for the European Championship finals took Samuli Kaiuola, Finland and Peo Josefsson from Motala.?The class Modified Harley and Best Paintjob was won by Mike Wiråker from Kalmar with his bagger bike – Lord of the Rings.
Despite wetness the was crowd active and many of those present took the opportunity to SMS vote for John Mathisen from Hägersten which won the audience vote with his Choppster. A happy winner, who could leave Norrtälje with a brand new engine for his next building project.
The great festival atmosphere never really arrived, persistent rain and 8 degrees meant that visitors were reduced to a fraction of what is tradition. But those who defied the weather got a show with high quality and a great stage entertainment, or as one of the visitors put it:
-A fucking weather but great entertainment.
The event with a mix of exhibition, fair and festival is normally one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and is organized by Twin Club Mc in Norrtälje. This year was Custom Bike Show arranged for the 38th time, which is now and an established arena for motorcycle building in Scandinavia and Europe and which also has a good reputation in the United States, homeland of motorcycle buildings.
Motorcycle Building has a nearly 50 year tradition in Sweden, and is therefore a pioneer, closely behind the U.S. where the culture really took off in the 50s. To rebuild or build your very own motorcycle has not been entirely clear, but interest has been around. Sweden has been a trend-setter in the culture and there is a “Swedish style” in the world. Custom Bike Show is one of the events in a good way of handling the culture and contribute to their survival and makes an impression on the rest of the motorcycle world in the world!

UNCLE MONKEY READER ON THE VERGE OF PROJECT COMPLETION–I hear you brother. Life, economy, and no cash sucks.
I started this project after I finished my tangerine dream 1976 FLH clone that Bandit published back in Oct 2009. It is still not finished. I only need less than a grand to finish it, but you know first hand how hard that can be to find sometimes. I have sold almost all of my extra parts to raise money to finish and as a painter have been changing my mind about the paint theme. I not only want to get it off my bench but now I need to as I want to start working on my FXST project.
I appreciate your stories and pictures. I also ask that you keep us informed. Even though I have done this before, I still forget things.
The first was trial by error by not knowing all the changes that the factory made between 1985 and 1986. This one is tough when you try to take what you like from several bike companies and combine them to make your idea of the perfect bike. Plus seeing how the industry has changed in the three years makes you wonder if the finished bike will still be noticed.
I am betting that I am not the only other biker in the same position as you, so Uncle Monkey, keep us in mind and continue your inspiration.

I do not think anyone will argue that the world has changed over the years and the motorcycling world with it. Dave’s book is a little more subtle and covers more history than George Carlin’s “The Pussification Of The Harley Davidson Rider.”
How do I know: Well I have been riding 60 years – have had the honor of being the International President of a large motorcycle club in the 70s and more than once been called an Outlaw by law enforcement and the government because I fought against them over issues I felt were wrong. I still do that today and continue to teach others the “Code” that has worked for me and can for you also.
Being called an “Outlaw” in today’s society of corruption in the government should be taken as a compliment for having the courage to stand up for what is right like : Brotherhood, Honesty, Faith and Loyalty.
As I read through the book, Dave brought this message to the readers. Motorcycling is a society within a society, and you will get out of it what you put into it. Of course those just along for the ride or in it just for the money will never get the full benefit of what this lifestyle has to offer.
Hopefully the information you get from reading this book will lead you down the path to bring out the “Outlaw” in you.

ERIK BUEL RACING IN SEARCH OF NEW DEALERS–It’s been three years since Harley-Davidson pulled the plug on the Buell motorcycle brand, and since then the marque’s namesake founder has been anything but quiet.
It seemed that as the last Lightning XB12Scg was rolling off the East Troy, Wis., assembly line, Erik Buell was already running full gallop into his next adventure. In rapid succession, Erik Buell Racing was formed in fall 2009. Its first bike, the 1190rr, was announced the following March, and a street version of the race machine, the 1190rs, debuted in February 2011 at Dealer Expo.
Erik Buell Racing (EBR) now is a fully-fledged, U.S.-based, premium performance sportbike manufacturer in search of a dealer network.
EBR runs a factory racing program in AMA Pro Racing Superbike with riders Danny Eslick and Geoff May, sponsored by Amsoil and India’s Hero MotoCorp. EBR also has an engineering consulting and distribution arms. For 2012, the OEM has the 1190rs, but there are several new designs planned for 2013. The company lists the RX, the SX and the AX as future models. How many in all are planned? As Buell explains it, “A lot in years ahead. … Consumer interest is high.”

Oh Ya! What-a-week.
Sleepless in the city by the bay. From what I can recall, seems we ran around most of last week preparing Tobey’s race bike for the Mojave Mile. Toby spent all day Friday at Southbay Triumph making mods, then Saturday with the Dyno tuner in Newport Beach, arriving at the 5-Ball garage after 10:00 p.m., maybe later? After a day in the Cantina ogling dancin’ girls while waiting on the freshly tuned race bike, the day got a little blurrrrrry.
What the hell, we packed the Limo with tons of good shit, no chairs, and loaded Jeff Levy’s trailer with the hot rod for the journey to the Mojave Mile about 2 hours away. Passed out after 1 a.m., jumped out of the rack at 3:45 AM, showered, made coffee that was rejected by the crew as not-real-strong, WTF? We peeled out about 4:30, rollin’ out of the Harbor in the dark.
MOJAVE MILE….Tech Time
Each motorcycle and the rider’s gear was inspected from stem to stern. Tires must be up to date, we got nervous, and the helmet must be current. If the rider is breathing, he’s good to go. The 5-Ball Race Team passed scrutinizing with flying colors, sorta. His kill switch lanyard didn’t function, and we had to create an ignition line junction, connected with a tie-wrap to the wrist lanyard.
Time for Toby to suit up and hit the race track. As a Mojave Magnum virgin he was forced to prospect for certification. His first pass had to exceed 120 mph, but no more than 140. No problem, right? His Kawasaki 1000cc speedo didn’t work because of the outlaw ECU mapping faking out the rev limiter, by telling the brain half speed. He could read his rpms, so we determined a carefully calculated guess of speed via RPMs. It worked. He rolled through the traps at exactly 130 mph. Then he had to make another pass at over 180 and less than 190. If he exceeded the required speed, they would pull his hall pass, and he couldn’t race.
We calculated some more. Figured 69.2 rpm per mile per hour. If he pulled just 13,000 rpm, he would cruise passed the timing lights at over 180, which he did, and was awarded his go-fast certification. “But it wouldn’t pull the 13,000,” Tobey said in the pits. By the time we made our first pass the wind was starting to gust from the right side. Tobey managed 5 or 6 passes in the mid 180s fighting a strong side wind. On one of his last passes the front end lifted under power after crossing a runway transition joint, slab to slab connection, at 160 mph plus in the power band pullin’ hard, nearly sweeping the wheel out from under the bike. His top speed turned just over 187 mph, and he was praying for the 200 mph club.
On Saturday riders and drivers rolled the dice and received a 35 to 40 mph tail wind. Over 40 racers earned a 200 mph t-shirt. Sunday riders ran consistently 8-9 mph slower. Shucks.
The race track was clean, fairly smooth other than a transition from slab to slab, and the day ran like a merry-go-round on fresh turbine oil. No waiting, just line up and haul ass, except during Virgin Galactic transport test experiments. We were shut down for an hour, while this monster took off and landed.
Here’s the exciting news. Mojave is shooting for an SCTA sanction. If graced with SCTA certs, you will see the Bonne Belle running at the Mojave Magnum mile. We lived another day and will return to run again.

We’ve made major decisions and advances this week. We now have a 3/4 Busa fairing scheduled for production at the Air Tech facility in San Marcos, CA. in 2 to 3 weeks, delivered to Salem, Oregon by the end of the month. The fastest body work on the salt flats is the Busa set-up, aerodynamically un-challenged other than purpose built streamliners.
By the end of the month all parts and pieces will be in place for tags and a title. Destination the road and the race track, then the road for further reports and testing.

IS HARLEY-DAVIDSON A “DOMESTIC” VEHICLE?–The Federal Government, in its infinite wisdom, has determined an automobile must have a minimum of seventy-five percent American made parts (which include Canadian but no mention of Mexican) to qualify as a “domestic” vehicle. With this information in hand I proceeded to determine a proper replacement for each of my current modes of transport.
My F-250 (assembled in KC) came in at a comfortable 90% made in USA. Next up, the Explorer rated 85%, still not so bad. Would you believe the Taurus (Assembled in Chicago) is only 70% American made? Not even a domestic automobile by US government standards.
Well, the Toyota Corolla and Avalon, and the Honda Ridgeline and Pilot all come in at 75%. The Toyota Camry hits 80%, and the Toyota Sienna goes 85%. The Mazda Tribute is tempting with a 90% number but I think I have the answer, and can still stay with my favorite brand. Ford Econoline vans come in at a whopping 95% American Made!
What about my Harley?
Well, the forks are from Japan….made by the Showa company, I know this.??Most of the lights are from China??The chrome pieces are from Asia….no EPA regs to deal with.
The engines are American made and they are assembled in America.??What do you think is 75% of Harleys made in America?

STURGIS FACES FINANCIAL DEFICITS?–City Of Sturgis Facing Risk Of Deficit Because Of Motorcycle Rally. Increased costs to host the rally and decreased revenue is challenging the City Of Sturgis budget. So, actions have been taken to supplement income: an increase of vendor fees by 8 percent, leasing of various city properties during the rally such as city parks and reducing the 2012 formally voted operating budget by nearly $220,000.
The City Manager Daniel Ainslie states that the citizens of Sturgis likely do not benefit or actually loose money from the rally. The 2011 rally income including sales tax, brought in $391,000 to the city, however the profits do not include the time spent by city staff, such as the finance office, attorney and human resources.
Without the rally. According to the comprehensive plan, the city should work out a strategy to ensure that the city profits at least $1,000,000 from the rally. The city also plans building a new venue to attract a new younger audience interested in the rally for the next 10 to 15 years.

VET HATS AND MORONS–A few days ago a friend of mine sent me a ‘Viet Nam Veteran’ hat. I never had one of these before and I was pretty hyped about it, especially because my friend was considerate enough to take the time to give it to me.
Yesterday, I wore it when I went to Wal-Mart. There was nothing in particular that I needed at the world’s largest retailer but, since I retired, trips to Wally World to look at the Wal-martians is always good for some comic relief. Besides, I always feel pretty normal after seeing some of the people that frequent the establishment. But, enough of my psychological fixes.
While standing in line to check out, the guy in front of me, probably in his early thirties, asked, “Are you a Vet Nam Vet?”
“No” I replied.
“Then why are you wearing that hat?”
“Because I couldn’t find my hat from the War of 1812.” I thought it was a snappy retort.
“The War of 1812 huh?” the Wal-martian queried, “When was that?”
God forgive but, I couldn’t pass up such an opportunity, “1936.”
He pondered my response for a moment and responded, “Why do they call it the War of 1812 if it was in 1936?”
“It was a Black Op. No one is supposed to know about it.” This was beginning to be way too much fun.
“Dude! Really!” he exclaimed. “How did you get to do something that COOOOL?”
I glanced furtively around me for effect, leaned toward the guy and in a low voice said, “I’m not sure. I was the only Caucasian on the mission.”
“Dude!” he was really getting excited about what he was hearing. “That is seriously Awesome! But, didn’t you kind of stand out?”
“Not really. The other guys were wearing white camouflage.” The moron nodded knowingly.
“Listen man,” I said in a very serious tone, “You can’t tell anyone about this. It’s still Top Secret and I shouldn’t have said anything.”
“Oh yeah.” he gave me the don’t threaten me look.”Like, what’s gonna happen if I do?” With a really hard look I said, “You have a family don’t you? We wouldn’t want anything to happen to them would we?”
The guy gulped, left his basket where it was and fled through the door.
By this time the lady behind me was about to have a heart attack she was laughing so hard. I just grinned at her.
After checking out and going to the parking lot I saw dimwit leaning in a car window talking to a young woman. Upon catching sight of me he started pointing excitedly in my direction. Giving him another ‘deadly’ serious look, I made the “I see you” gesture. He turned kind of pale, jumped in the car and sped out of the parking lot.
What a great time! Tomorrow I’m going back with a Homeland Security hat.
Whoever said retirement is boring just needs the right kind of hat…

In total, 31 Members backed the letter that instructed the highway bill conference committee to include language to prohibit any federal funding of mandatory motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints.

Its unclear at this point if the language to prohibit mandatory motorcycle-only checkpoints will be included in the final legislation. There are a lot of devils in the details of the entire bill. ZANESVILLE, OHIO– Gun instructor shoots self in class– A seasoned firearms instructor shot himself in the right leg during a firearm course.
Michael D. Craig, 59, owner and instructor at Ohio Shooting Sports, on Sunday was showing students how to take a defensive stand and shoot close to a target. Craig told Deputy Darrin Bohn he had taken the Glock Model 35 out of his holster, fired two shots, holstered it, pulled it out of the holster and fired two more shots. When Craig went to reholster the gun for the third time, he pulled the trigger and shot himself in the right calf.

DEMAND FOR NEW HARLEYS GROWS–report—by Holly Wagner
Prices for new Harley-Davidson motorcycles are improving, partly as a result of lower inventories and higher demand, according to an analyst’s report.
Demand in the second quarter of this year is up 4 percent to 5 percent on the heels of a 25 percent demand increase in first quarter, brought on by early spring weather, according to Baird Equity Research analyst Craig Kennison. The Baird report is based on a survey of 40 Harley dealers nationwide.
Surveyed dealers reported that as demand increases, discounts are becoming more scarce. “For the first time since 2008, more dealers tell us that bikes are selling at/above MSRP than below MSRP,” Kennison wrote. “Dealers understand that Harley has little capacity to increase production further in 2012, so these dealers are making the most of what they have.
“Used bike prices are stronger, too,” he stated. Tight supply and high demand for new models has helped drive up prices for pre-owned vehicles, Kennison wrote. “Big picture, we believe efforts to revitalize used bike prices have stimulated demand for new bikes – a sustainable trend. Dealers reported an 8 percent to 10 percent increase in used bike retail.”
Harley-Davidson Financial Services is holding to tighter consumer lending standards than during boom years, but is sending some rejected credit applications through a second time “for consumers willing to downsize or modify the terms of the loan to meet HDFS standards,” according to the report.
U.S. dealer inventory is at its lowest levels in a decade, with an average of 54 new bikes per dealership, against 124 per dealer in 2006.
The Motor Co.’s growth opportunities are what analysts believe to be underserved U.S. markets (women and minorities) and overseas. “We believe Harley-Davidson must attract more women, minorities and youth riders without alienating its base. Women represent just 12 percent of buyers today but have expanded in number by 14 percent since Harley-Davidson launched a [women’s] rider training program in 2000. Harley-Davidson has a similar opportunity to penetrate the African-American and Hispanic-American markets,” Kennison wrote. The men’s rider market posted a 9 percent growth rate by comparison, he noted.
Kennison noted that foreign sales accounted for just 19 percent of sales in 2004, but reached 36 percent last year. Overseas, “dealers sell less than 100 bikes [per] year in Europe versus over 300 in the U.S., suggesting opportunity,” he wrote. “Harley-Davidson recently opened dealerships in China and India, and is expanding in Brazil, but currently relies on Japan, Canada and Europe for most international volume.”

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER MOST EXCELLENT FINDINGS–More Chocolate, Fewer Heart Attacks.
If more people at high risk for cardiac disease ate dark chocolate daily, there might be fewer heart attacks and strokes. That conclusion comes from a team of Australian researchers who explored the long-term benefits of chocolate – already known to be heart protective – via a mathematical model.
They based the model on more than 2,000 people who had high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions associated with increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. None of the participants was being treated for high blood pressure, and none had a history of heart attack or diabetes.
The investigators determined that if all the participants ate 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate (containing at least 60 percent cocoa solids) daily over 10 years, a total of 70 non-fatal and 15 fatal cardiovascular events per 10,000 people could be avoided. If compliance with the chocolate prescription was 80 percent, 55 non-fatal and 10 fatal heart attacks or strokes per 10,000 people could be prevented over 10 years. The study was published online May 31, 2012 in the British Medical Journal.
My take? I’m a big fan of dark chocolate, especially high quality products from France, Belgium, Italy, Ecuador, and Venezuela, and find that a single piece is a satisfying snack or after-dinner treat. We know that dark chocolate can benefit the heart, but my concern with this preventive approach would be with the additional calories. The benefits would have to be balanced with risks of consumption, particularly by people who are already overweight or obese.
To avoid weight gain, you would have to be on a healthy eating plan that limits daily calories in order to accommodate the 480 additional ones you would get from eating 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of dark chocolate daily.

Let’s see, what’s on our plates. I have a Rolling Thunder report from Mike Pullin, and magazines are fighting over the four featured bikes including Billy’s. By the time they publish, these bikes will be all over the Internet. I heard that Arlen Ness was forced to let 75 percent of his staff go, so times are still very tough, but it’s good to see Erik Buell rolling and Harley sales increasing.
Shops are busy servicing bikes, adding performance touches, and custom upgrades. While on the highway to the Mojave Magnum, every Harley that blew passed us was a dresser, except for one Sportster. We have several techs headed your way from the Tail Gunner, a Swedish show report from the Sheriff, and road report from Sedona by Josh Placa.
It’s going to be a busy weekend, with a TV crew here tomorrow, a 5-Ball Racing sponsor visit, SDS Welding, who helped Tobey finish his bike for Mojave, then tearing the Peashooter engine out of the frame for modifications.
