WAR TIMES BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for March 28, 2024

Hey,

We are living in strange times. Take a look at history and the weird shit impacting humanity, like wars. We are right there again and most folks go about their days, ho hum. Some brave souls are sounding the alarm, like Bob Kay with the IMA, Chris Callen of Cycle Source, Marc Morano at Cfact and Climate Depot and Greg Wrightstone of the CO2 Coalition. There are more and the numbers are growing.

It’s a war, but mostly of words and incarceration. If you don’t agree, you get arrested. The actions of the folks who want the war and destruction include open borders to control elections, killing our kids with fentanyl, ruining cities with crime and homelessness and punishing you because of your SUVs or motorcycles. The best recent historic example of this was right after WWII when the threat of communism caused a guy named Senator McCarthy to attempt to destroy free speech and jail anyone who muttered the word communism. Google it, look it up on Wikipedia.

At the time all the major Hollywood stars flew to Washington D.C. and protested his anti-freedom dictatorship. This time they support it. It’s time to be aware, very aware of what’s happening to our country.

The people stopped it and McCarthy committed suicide.

Let’s see what’s in the news.

BREAKING NEWS–SEMA Advocacy Leads to EPA Delaying Most Aggressive Tailpipe Emissions Benchmarks.

After advocacy from the automotive community, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is delaying its most aggressive tailpipe emissions reduction requirements from model year 2027 to model year 2030. The EPA’s final rule also slightly increased the average tailpipe emissions for light-duty vehicles, increasing the standard to 85 grams/mile from 82 grams/mile for model year 2032.

While the agency’s final rulemaking provides automakers with additional time to ramp up production of zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs), currently, only electric vehicles (EVs) and five plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) meet the easier 85 grams/mile standard. It is estimated that 67% of new vehicles sold would have to be EVs by 2032 to meet this standard. Automakers could also comply with the final rule if EVs account for 56% of new vehicle sales and PHEVs comprise 13% of model year 2032 sales. The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) opposes the EPA’s final standards for model year 2027 to 2032 light and medium-duty vehicles, which ultimately still forces automakers to sell EVs and PHEVs to comply with this rulemaking and further limits internal combustion engine technology options.

A RUSH OF 100-WORD FICTION SUBMISSIONS–QUIG

I took the first Piedmont exit off I-90, rolling the Chieftain onto the parking lot of Matt’s Place, the front tire of the classic facing the interstate. The t-shirts stapled to the wall said Matt wasn’t there, he was fishing.

Silently, I tipped my champagne of beers to the Blackhills and whispered to my friend that I missed him. It’s been four years now since he left, yet I still hear his voice, his laugh and wish I could cast a fly like he could.

Time goes by, the days slip away fast, the best leave us first. Enjoy Miller time.

POWERSPORTS BUSINESSES SPEAK OUT–Powersports Businesses Large and Small Asked to Speak Out in Washington

“On behalf of the MIC Board, I want to encourage everyone to join us at the Capitol Hill Fly-In, April 29-30, to help make our voices heard in Washington,” said MIC Chair Derek Brooks, Motorcycle Product Line Manager of Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. “We will be speaking with lawmakers about key policy issues facing powersports including protecting and expanding OHV access, taking a reasonable approach to PFAS legislation, and pushing for an end to tariffs on crucial powersports parts and products from China.”

The Fly-In is not just for senior OEM executives. Dealers, distributors, retailers, insurance companies, and allied services attend. Meetings and receptions provide valuable opportunities to network and discuss powersports priorities, and for industry peers to get to know each other better.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM UPDATE— Honor the ride, build the legacy.
A pilgrimage to Sturgis isn’t complete without a visit to the iconic Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

The tight, small museum staff with a ton of projects on hand are also working hard to produce an annual magazine in conjunction with the city of Sturgis.

They’re not cranking out any ordinary mag, but a resource guide to help any traveller who comes to the Black Hills. The response has been fantastic and we have expanded the size of the magazine twice and it could receive an additional 16 pages. Hang on.

Scott Jacobs turned in his magnificent tribute to Hillclimb motorcycles art piece for the cover yesterday. This weekend, I will write the story behind the inception of this piece with the help of Dale Walksler R.I.P. and the Wheels Through Time Museum.

We are reworking the Museum Website with several additions including fund raising forms and news columns. Each bike and display image will contain a description and include fresh new photography.

Here’s our second museum expansion concept drawing from Daniel James. Very cool, but we have one more to go before we meet with the city of Sturgis and discuss our options.

Speaking of the City, members of the Museum board will soon attend a meeting with the city leaders.

The town of Sturgis is voting on the AFT race series to take place the last weekend of the Rally April 9th. There’s a lot of buzz going around about it.

We will be selling individual copies of the magazine through the web site and every business in Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood and Whitewood will received a copy and the opportunity to buy more.

It’s never dull around the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

Whether you’re a seasoned rider, a history enthusiast, or simply curious, a visit to Sturgis Motorcycle Museum at 999 Main Street, Sturgis, SD 57785, promises an enriching experience.

NEWS FROM THE MASTER OF LIGHT–Artist David Uhl

David recently completed a new piece for Harley-Davidson. Prints were used as the awards for the Motor Company’s Bar and Shield awards for top performing dealerships.

We are pleased to announce that David will be offering 6 (that’s correct, only 6!) special hand-embellished versions. Definitely a first come-first served scenario on this one!

“Bobber Blasphemy”

In David’s words, “I was contacted by the Motor Company a while back to produce a work of art to be used as an award for exemplary Dealers. The program is called the “Bar & Shield award”. The winning dealers would receive a framed canvas print. My initial thought was to speak to the extensive history of the Dealer Network.

Since I love the Knuck/Panhead era most I decided to feature that era of bike. This oil painting depicts an early American Harley dealer reacting after seeing a trio of motorcycles he had sold, only returning with a whole lotta missing parts!”

David will take the canvas color proofs and paint over them, creating 6 unique pieces. With these, he includes a special letter to the recipient (in his really cool calligraphy handwriting).

Please let me know ASAP if you’d like to reserve one of the six. You can respond to this email or call me at 303-913-4840.

STURGIS MUSEUM EXPERIENCE–

Keith Ball’s Assalt Weapon, Sturgis, South Dakota

While exploring the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, Hall of Fame & Gift Shop, I got to meet Keith “Bandit” Ball whose motorcycle, Assalt Weapon, set a record of 160 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats races in 2007.

Keith’s bike, on loan to the museum, was being transported to Alabama to be worked on in preparation for this year’s Bonneville race and the process of moving this one-of-a-kind motorcycle was quite something to watch.

“Keith Ball grew up in Long Beach, CA, and has since travelled the world with the Navy and has worked as an editor and publisher for various big-time motorcycle magazines and publications. Keith has also written various novels, been featured in movies, TV shows, and has received many awards for his talents. In 2006 he was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame, and shortly after set two motorcycle land speed records.”

CALL TO ACTION–U.S. Senate Bill S. 3094

Wednesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its final rule on tailpipe emissions. The plan calls for greenhouse gas emissions limits for the 2027 through 2032 model years for passenger vehicles. The original plan would have required 67% of new light-duty car and truck sales to be electric by 2032. After pushback from numerous groups, hybrids became included in the calculations and targets were slightly lowered. Nevertheless, over 50% of cars for sale in less than a decade, will need to be electric.

Last year the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act with bipartisan support. The vote was 221-197. The bill prevents the EPA from enacting these rules, thereby protecting the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE).

Unfortunately, the Senate refuses to act. Only 37 U.S Senators are currently supporting the companion bill, S. 3094. If you care about preserving the Internal Combustion Engine, now is the time to act.

Tell your Senators to push back against the mandate for electric vehicles. Click the Call To Action button below! Add your voice to those that want to defend our lifestyle.

There is speculation that new bills will be introduced to protect the Internal Combustion Engine but we must keep up the pressure!

AHEAD OF MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS PERIOD

  • MassDOT Reminds All Motorists Roadway Safety Is a Shared Responsibility
  • Operators urged to wear visible clothing, obey speed limits
  • Vehicle drivers reminded to “look twice” when changing lanes and turning
  • Statistics show 58 motorcycle operator deaths in Massachusetts in 2023

As the spring approaches, Governor Maura Healey has signed a Proclamation, designating the period of March 23 through April 1, 2024 as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Period. In addition, the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles’ (RMV) is raising awareness for motorcyclist safety, reminding all travelers that roadway safety is a shared responsibility, that vehicle drivers should look twice for motorcycles when pulling out onto roads and changing lanes, and motorcycle operators should be visible and obey the rules of the road.

“Safety must be a priority for everyone, but especially for vulnerable road users like motorcyclists,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt. “We know with the warmer weather ahead, more motorcyclists will be on the roads and the operators and other drivers around them have a duty to stay alert and be mindful of all traffic laws designed to keep everyone safe.”

“As part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Period, the RMV reminds all motorists that safety demands an effort from vehicle operators and motorcyclists alike,”said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie. “All motorcyclists need to be properly educated and licensed, regardless of how experienced they are in operating other vehicle types. Wearing protective gear and bright, visible clothing is also very important and should be used at all times, regardless of the duration of your trip and the roadway conditions.”

Data on MassDOT’s crash data portal,IMPACT, shows there were 58 motorcycle operator fatalities across Massachusetts in the year 2023. Additionally, there were three motorcycle passenger fatalities. Motorists and other members of the public are encouraged to access the interactive data portal, to see where different types of crash incidents have taken place and how the data compares from year to year.

Motorcyclists face an increased risk of severe injury and death when crashes occur. The two most common roadway fatality crashes are single-vehicle crashes that involve a motorcycle driver failing to negotiate a curve in the road, and crashes involving a left-turning vehicle striking a motorcycle.

Motorcyclists are encouraged to be prepared and participate in educational training courses that are offered through the state-sponsored Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP). The program seeks to increase rider skills and safety on the road by providing quality rider education and training to both novice and experienced motorcycle riders. The program is specifically designed to assist riders of all levels and to promote the safe operation of motorcycles.

Waiver courses include Basic Rider Course, Basic Rider Course 2, Returning Rider – Basic Rider Course, and 3 Wheel – Basic Rider Course. MREP also offers additional non-licensing courses for motorcyclists that already have their motorcycle license.

HISTORY LESSON FROM COMPETITION DISTRIBUTING–Maldwyn Jones & his Merkel Jefferson racer.

Jones was a phenomenal racer and engineer who started working for the Merkel company at a young age. He stood out front of the factory asking Joe Merkel for a racer position. Merkel told him no but gave him a job in the repair department.

Maldwyn loved racing and would work on his own racers crafted with leftover “junk” in the basement of the factory. He stated Joe Merkel knew what he was doing but never came to inspect. He would ask Joe to race for the moco but he would not support Maldwyn.

Jones finally quit the company with the lack of support and went on to race 100 miler in Dayton Ohio on a Thor of his friends. Joe Merkel kid with other employees he would not finish let alone compete. Well, Joe ended up leaving after Maldwyn won three of the 4 races that weekend.

They hired Maldwyn back that next week and it took Mr. Merkel some time to swallow his pride before he would speak to Maldwyn again. The bike in the picture above was crafted by Maldwyn using a Jefferson overhead valve head and a cutoff Merkel cylinder.

He did not have to work in the basement again…

HARLEY-DAVIDSON LiveWire launches first electric cruiser motorcycle– S2 Mulholland

LiveWire, the all-electric motorcycle company spun out of Harley-Davidson’s electric motorcycle division, has just unveiled its latest electric motorcycle. The new LiveWire S2 Mulholland is the brand’s first cruiser electric motorcycle, and in fact the first cruiser of any major electric motorcycle maker.

It might not look quite like a typical H-D cruiser. Gone are the chrome pipes and leather bar tassels. Instead, LiveWire is calling the S2 Mulholland a “performance cruiser”, and it’s got the specs to back that up.

A 3.3 second 0-60 mph time adds sportiness to the laidback cruiser geometry with taller bars and a more relaxed-looking ride. The use of a 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear also gives the bike a squatter rear end.

There’s no cruiser frame, but that’s because there’s not really a frame at all. Instead, the S2 Mulholland uses the Arrow platform seen on the S2 Del Mar, which is centered around a structural battery that allows for multiple bikes to be built around a similar architecture.

BIKERNET DOCUMENTARY REVIEW OF THE WEEK—Climate the Movie

Climate The Movie: The Cold Truth is now available to view at no cost! Director Martin Durkin and Producer Tom Nelson want to share this far and wide. Please view here — then share the link with everyone!

The film includes interviews with a number of very prominent scientists associated with the CO2 Coalition, including Coalition Chairman Dr. William Happer along with Board members Dr. Patrick Moore (co-founder of Greenpeace) and Dr. John Clauser (2022 Nobel Laureate in Physics). Also included are Coalition members Roy Spencer and Tony Heller.

From CO2 Coalition Member and Producer Tom Nelson’s Substack:

This film exposes the climate alarm as an invented scare without any basis in science. It shows that mainstream studies and official data do not support the claim that we are witnessing an increase in extreme weather events – hurricanes, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires and all the rest. It emphatically counters the claim that current temperatures and levels of atmospheric CO2 are unusually and worryingly high.

On the contrary, it is very clearly the case, as can be seen in all mainstream studies, that, compared to the last half billion years of earth’s history, both current temperatures and CO2 levels are extremely and unusually low. We are currently in an ice age. It also shows that there is no evidence that changing levels of CO2 (it has changed many times) has ever ‘driven’ climate change in the past.

LATEST FROM PAUGHCO–DirtyBiker 2-1 Evo Sportster Exhaust 1986-2003

DirtyBiker X Paughco Exhaust
(PRE-ORDER-ships in 4-8 weeks more details coming soon.)

This is a two piece 2-1 exhaust designed by Josh “DirtyBiker” Sheehan and produced by Paughco. The goal with this version was to create another signature “DirtyBiker” exhaust for the H-D Sportster’s from 1986-2003 in rigid and swingarm frames.

Fits 1986-2003 engines in rigid frames and swingarm frames. With a tip of the hat to Dick Allen and the Alphabet co. It was time for that classic exhaust style to make a comeback. Ironhead’s rule, so does this exhaust. I hope you dig it too.

Here’s what it will fit:
•1986-2003

Here’s what it won’t fit:
•TBD

For rigid applications:
*slider channel on the back side of the front exhaust pipe just below the exhaust collector. Attach to the lower frame rail in front of the axle plate. You can do this one of two ways.

Either weld a mounting tab to the lower frame rail, or use the mounting kit offered by Paughco (possible option coming soon). You might need to modify a tab to fit, but you’re a chopper dude/dudette. I have faith in you!

100% made in house at Paughco. 100% American made. 1000% DirtyBiker shit.

T-bolts are included to use with slider channels welded on exhaust system.

“Well, as a matter of fact, I have,” she said… “I’ve been divorced three times, owned two Chryslers, and voted for Biden.”

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE RACING AND REIGHNING CHAMPION JARED MEES SECURE FIRST VICTORY OF 2024 SEASON AT SENOIA SHORT TRACK

Mees Edges Out the Competition Aboard Indian FTR750, Moving into Third in Overall Standings

Fellow Indian FTR750 Rider Brandon Robinson Rounds out the Podium in Third

Indian Motorcycle Racing had a stellar showing at round three of the 2024 American Flat Track series in Senoia, Georgia, for the Senoia Short Track. It was nine-time champion Jared Mees scoring his first victory of the year aboard his Indian FTR750, moving him into third in the championship. Fellow Indian Motorcycle-supported racer Brandon Robinson rounded out the top three aboard his Indian FTR750 privateer ride.

After a slow start to the season, Mees, the reigning champion, made a strong statement in Senoia that he’s still at the top of his game and the rider to beat. Despite an unwanted starting position, he used it as motivation to rocket his FTR750 off the line when the green flag waved to take over the lead quickly.

Mees was overtaken a short time later but maintained his speed and stayed within striking distance to regain the lead a few laps later. Once out front, Mees didn’t look back throughout the remainder of the 36-lap race, taking the checkered flag and winning by 1.6 seconds.

“This was a solid showing for Jared and the Indian Motorcycle team, securing the win and keeping him within striking distance in the chase for his 10th-career championship,” said Gary Gray, Vice President of Racing & Service for Indian Motorcycle. “Although the weekend didn’t go completely how he’d like, it was important for him to get this win under his belt. There is still a lot of racing left this season, and this victory provide him and his team momentum going next month’s race in Texas.”

“It was a challenging start to the season so to come away with the win tonight is incredible,” said Mees. “I struggled throughout the day and during qualifying so was a little worried but after making some changes to the bike it performed phenomenally in the Main event. Everything I had been wanting it to do all day, finally came to me and it paid off. I can’t thank the Indian team enough for the support.

After three rounds, Mees sits third in the championship chase with 54 points, a mere 10 points off the lead. Currently tied with Scottie Parker with the most career championships, Mees is looking to secure his spot in the history books as the all-time greatest flat track racer with a 2024 championship, earning him 10-career titles. Of his nine-career championships, Mees has five while piloting the Indian FTR750, coming in 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

The 2024 American Flat Track season continues on April 27 for the Texas Half-Mile in Fort Worth, TX.

Ortiz) beside 2 original House cosponsors. Questioned Senator Hinrichsen about timeline – goes into effect Aug. 7th 2024 / repealed (sunset) Sept. 1, 2027 / but data report by CDOT by Jan. 1, 2027! THE LATEST FROM THE TEMPLE OF INSPIRATION–Decide!

More than anything else, I believe it’s our decisions, not the conditions of our lives that determine our destiny.

“Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent, and committed decision.”–Tony Robbins

Life is a canvas upon which we paint our attention. As Napoleon Hill wisely stated, “What the Mind can conceive and believe, the Mind will achieve.” Each day presents us with choices, amidst the backdrop of our inner struggles, fears, and challenges. However, the manner in which we navigate these challenges is ultimately our decision.

We possess an innate Power that transcends any obstacle, supported by the Universal Law of cause and effect. Henry Ford succinctly captured this essence: “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Similarly, Buddha emphasized the profound influence of our thoughts on our reality: “What we think, we become.”

It is crucial to monitor our internal dialogue—are our thoughts and conversations uplifting or limiting? Do we dwell on problems or seek out solutions?

“You hold the power to shape your reality,” as Ford suggested.

AND SO IT IS .

Namaste.

STAFF 100-WORD FICTION SUBMISSION–Fuzzy

I swayed left and right, twisting the throttle, pushing and pulling at the handlebars. Tense, I sweat through a hot early morning in June. If only I could ride another 200 miles, I know I would be at peace.

This time yesterday, I kickstarted my journey to the heartland. There were no goodbyes at work, maybe no welcomes at my destination, my home. As I evaded the bustling traffic on the interstate, the many commuters dissolved, my mind picturing her smile, her yellow gown, her rare recipes and most of all, her patience with me.

The oil rig fellas pitched in to do my share, as I took off to a final resting place. Mom’s fading fast. Will she remember me in her condition? I gotta stay awake to fulfill her dreams. I promised to be by her side.

NEVER GIVE UP—I shoot the shit with friends who don’t want to have anything to do with politics, but it’s our country. I know guys who are afraid to get involved. It’s concerning. People are being arrested for stepping up and voicing their opinions, but we can’t give in, ever. I know motorcycle rights groups who don’t want to upset folks who are deliberately trying to destroy the country. Tough call.

Think about it. I’m trying to build a couple of new project bikes when they plan to ban all ICE engines behind lies.

I’m working with companies like Paughco. They have a chrome shop. Europe currently is trying to ban all chrome shops.

I received this Paughco tin primary for an alternator motor. I sliced and diced it to make a primary chain guard. Plans changed and then came together.

Zack in Long Beach got himself a new French Bulldog but some guys in the government want to ban pets. Remember they breathe CO2, shit and piss.

If you order Black bike star hub wheels with newer Timken bearings, Paughco now makes the axle. It’s just slightly different from stock, but different enough to create a serious problem.

Kent Weeks from Lucky Devil Metalworks in Houston is a talented guy and we discussed petcocks and gas caps. If you have this type of gas cap and it’s flush mounted, you can’t fill your dinky tank. It will leak.

Then we kicked around inline petcocks for our dreaded Fossil Fuels. I bought fittings with a 5/16 ID for better flow to the 93-inch S&S engine. I discovered to my dismay many petcocks have less than a 1/4-inch hole through the valve.

I dug around and found this little sleek petcock with a solid ¼-inch hole. Carl Olsen told me it doesn’t matter because of the float bowl capacity. But, but…

But hang on. I have pals who don’t vote. What the fuck? No wonder the government is crumbling.

I’m riding free forever or die trying, goddammit.
