Hey,
There is constant talk about the economic disaster we’re living through and the downturn of the chopper industry, but we often leave out a major positive factor, the ever-growing population. In the last five years, millions of 13-year-olds became 18- year-olds. A portion of them will contain the drive to ride and or build motorcycles. That number will only add to the zillions of males between the age of 16 and 45. That doesn’t account for all us old farts between the age of 45 and 65. So the financial markets might not glow in the dark, but the number of customers is still growing worldwide.
It’s another Thursday, and life is bananas. Brothers are preparing for the big V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati, in fact Doc Robinson just arrived from Australia. Ben Lamboeuf our ad director is flying out with Doc tomorrow. Ray Wheeler, our very fast Performance Editor is flying out and hanging with Kiwi Mike, Lyndall Brakes, and MetalSport wheels. Paul Davis, a Bikernet contributor will be roaming the isles, along with our tech master Rogue.
I’m scrambling to haul the rest of the Mudflap Girl FXR components to Worco Powdercoating. And I need to finish the front fender by tonight, or die trying. Tobey, our official Bikernet Certified welder will be on hand to finish Tig Welding the front fender mounts, and I need to finish the news.
Let’s haul ass.

MRF LEADER RECEIVES A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE– I saw ‘Hardtail’ Willard on the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) last evening in a broadcast of a meeting he attended in Harrisburg (I think). I just wanted to let him know, as a past rider, how impressed I was with him and his awareness of the issues facing riders today, and the legislative efforts to address and resolve these issues.
The MRF and motorcycle riders in general can be very proud of him, and assured that action will take place to help preserve and protect our riding freedom. I have lost several friends to motorcycle accidents, and I still have many friends that ride and I am concerned with their safety when they are on the highways and byways of Pennsylvania and the USA, as well as their freedoms. Thanks to all the MRF and to ‘Hardtail’.

AMRA READY TO RACE– BIG Meet and Greet at the V-Twin Show Cincinnati- Saturday-Feb. 2nd
Blanchard, MI: Marty and Jayne VandenHeuvel are getting primed up for the 2013 AMRA race season, adding a couple events to their already busy schedule to meet the needs of those who are joining the AMRA.
Marty, “We feel bad that AHDRA didn’t make another season, but we totally understand that with the economy the way it is, things are tough. We’ve always stayed within our comfort zone and AMRA’s secure and in the black. We are looking forward to picking up a couple new tracks. We’ve had a great relationship with our current track owners and hope to add a new level of excitement by spreading out a little.”
“Jayne and I can not begin to thank the AMRA family of racers who have raced with us through thick and thin. These teams have been very loyal and I hope they know that we’re loyal to them also. Our staff is totally ready for an influx of new teams to AMRA. We’ve even set up a meet and greet at the V-Twin Show in Cincinnati. Any veteran AMRA racers, crew or fans are welcome to come by and support us.. And of course, we want the former AHDRA racers to come meet us, ask questions, and pick up membership packages. Anything we can do to make our first race as smooth as possible is what we hope to accomplish by being at the V-Twin Show.” Finally of course we hope to see some Sponsors, old and new as well as those seeking Information on Sponsorship.
“Many thanks to Andy Simon, Sr and Jr for coordinating the usage of the ThunderMax seminar room, #235 upstairs in the Main exhibit hall from 1:30-2:30 on Saturday. ThunderMax has a seminar room for the weekend, and is allowing the AMRA to utilize the room between seminar sessions….Thank-you ThunderMax!!”
Marty goes on to say, “This is a fairly informal get together. The express purpose of this meeting is to get those folks interested in the AMRA from a racing, sponsoring, or just to get to know “Who/What the AMRA” is, and to meet us before our first race. . We think we have the best racers and fans in the world, but there’s always room for more fun and faster and quicker race bikes.”

QUICK NEW BIKERNET READER COMMENT– Swedish Style Choppers EC Approved for Europe
http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=8859
Nice reading your article. I’m having a worries about importing a chopper to Sweden, and I thought you might have the answer regarding the CoC.
I’m living in Abu Dhabi and are on my way to import a Big dog K9. I’ll export it to Sweden and Gothenburg after my long journey here. Now, I need the CoC (Certificate of Conformity), but who can issue the document when BDM has closed down 2010? The CoC is needed to register the bike in Sweden I suppose?

BIKERNET KNIFE OF THE WEEK– All black wood handles are a special rare wood with no botanical name, that was obtained at gunpoint from witch doctors who would not part with it any other way. The wood is too hard to make simple scratches. A power dremel must be used to carve tight images or designs in it. This devilish black wood is lighter than ironwood or ebony and makes a balanced handle much better because of that. There is nothing else like it anywhere.
The Ferguson Damascus blades are made from 250 layer bindles of alternating 1095 high carbon steel and nickel 200. It was welded at 2200 degrees Fahrenheit before being put under 75 tons of pressure in a hydraulic press. After the press the Damascus was normalized and annealed, then surface ground to order. Note there is no new Ferguson Damascus being produced at this time and will be no more made in the future.

A LETTER FROM JANICE HAHN OUR LOCAL CALIFORNIA CONGRESSPERSON–Thank you for contacting me to voice your views on gun control. I am honored to represent you, and I appreciate your active participation in the legislative process. Your input makes our democracy work better. By staying involved, you help me more effectively represent you and our district.
I believe that we must do more to stop gun violence, including increasing awareness and funding for mental health programs. Furthermore, I believe we must take action to institute common sense gun safety measures, including closing the loophole that allows criminals to obtain guns without undergoing a background check. While some of our views may differ on this matter, I hope that you will keep in touch with me on this or any other issue you feel important.
Thanks again for taking the time to share your concerns. To stay informed of my work or sign up for my email newsletter, please visit my website at http://Hahn.House.gov. Or, you can always call my office in San Pedro at (310) 831-1799 or my office in Washington, D.C. toll-free at (855) 328-7332.

YOUR WEAPONS, PLEASE–Government must be kept weak, subservient, in order for it to serve We the People. A desire to control We the People, that’s where the system breaks down. That’s where people get pushed around, pissed off, rebellious. That’s the function of rebellion.
When necessary, the masses organize like a school of fish using the magic lateral line of indignation to become a crushing tidal wave of force that nothing historically has ever been able to stop. Our elected civil servants forget this. They ignore this. They pretend this can no longer happen. It can. It will again. The masses are just that, the mass, the largest body, the real 500 pound gorilla. They are rarely organized and so they are often mocked, belittled, assumed conquered. But woe to the fool who motivates We the People to suddenly come together in a mob of angry uniformity.

MASTER SEAT MAKER’S NEW PROJECT–It is colder than hell and I have been itching to get the ideas flowing for my 72 xs650.
I have had this idea of combining the enduro, chopper and the 70’s styling into one bike for sometime now. I am naming it after my Dads old 70’s Ford work truck that everyone called the Green Weenie. It was probably the ugliest truck know to man, but ran forever, and I had a lot of good memories in it.
Like my other motorcycles, I want to keep it as simple as possible by eliminating most of the stock parts and add the basic parts needed. I will use a sporty tank, old Ford spare tire cover for the fender, dirt/street tires, lime green and hunter green paint with a nice patina. I will make the sissybar, the king/queen handtooled chopper seat and pinstripe the tins. This will be a fun motorcycle to create and ride!

TEXAS MOTORCYCLE CRASH PREVENTION ACT–By: YNN Staff
Hundreds of bikers made their way to the State Capitol Monday morning to show support for the Motorcycle Crash Prevention Act, a bill aimed at lowering the number of motorcycle accidents across Texas.
Hundreds of bikers rumbled their way to the State Capitol Monday morning to promote a new piece of legislation.
The group of bikers is asking state lawmakers to pass the Motorcycle Crash Prevention Act, a bill aimed at lowering the number of motorcycle accidents across Texas.
Among other things, the bill would provide funding to expand Texas’ “Share the Road” program–a public service campaign intended to make drivers more aware of motorcycles on the road.
If the proposed bill becomes law, it would also fund more training for riders.
One of the event’s organizers says she’s optimistic about the bill passing, thanks to the motorcyclists’ lobby.
“We’re all registered voters and we’re heavily involved in all the politics of the state,” Terri Williams with the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association said. “We want to make them aware of us in large numbers to let them know that we have the backing of the state of Texas with the motorcyclists.”

The many special attractions of the exhibit included a custom bike recently built “on stage” for all to witness in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas BikeFest and of course, the ever popular “Plinko Board” to facilitate numerous free promotional items like mini LED flashlights and such……..the kids ALWAYS love that!
Of course, our staff was hit with every question in the book about the school and the curriculum and very glad to sitdown with numerous potential students to discuss a career in power-sports and how PSI could make their dreams come true.
Another big draw to this series of shows around the country is and has been the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builders Competition……many top flight bike were in this show as the peers judge each other to determine the winners of the show.

NEW E15 GAS CAN RUIN ENGINES– This week’s warm Washington temperatures had some thinking about rolling the Lawn-Boy out of the garage for the first cut of the year. And we all know what that means: Difficult starts due to E10 gas that gels when it sits.
Now, according to a new study, cars and truck may face the same fate thanks to President Obama’s demand for a higher ethanol in the new E15 gas.
The fuel industry’s American Petroleum Institute tested the 15 percent ethanol gas approved in 2010 and found it gums up fuel systems, prompts “check engine” lights to come on, and messes with fuel gauge readings.
“Failure of these components could result in breakdowns that leave consumers stranded on busy roads and highways,” said the industry report. Worse: API said the fuel problems–not found in E5 or E10 blends–aren’t always covered by auto warranties.
The industry prefers pure fuel to an ethanol mix, but the report isn’t likely to slow the administrations green push, according to a Washington auto lobbyist.
The key points from the API report are below:
The additional E15 testing, completed this month, has identified an elevated incidence of fuel pump failures, fuel system component swelling, and impairment of fuel measurement systems in some of the vehicles tested.
E15 could cause erratic and misleading fuel gauge readings or cause faulty check engine light illuminations. It also could cause critical components to break and stop fuel flow to the engine. Failure of these components could result in breakdowns that leave consumers stranded on busy roads and highways.
Fuel system component problems did not develop in the CRC tests when either E10 or E0 was used. It is difficult to precisely calculate how many vehicles E15 could harm. That depends on how widely it is used and other factors. But, given the kinds of vehicles tested, it is safe to say that millions could be impacted.
In 2010 and 2011, EPA gave the green light to use E15 – the 15 percent ethanol gasoline blend – in model-year-2001-and-later cars and some other vehicles. EPA’s action was irresponsible. EPA knew E15 vehicle testing was ongoing but decided not to wait for the results. Why did EPA move forward prematurely?
Part of the answer may be the need to raise the permissible concentration level of ethanol so that greater volumes could be used, as required by the federal Renewable Fuel Standard. Most gasoline sold today is an E10 blend, but rising volume requirements under the law can’t be met much longer without going to higher blends. When Congress passed the law, it could not know it was creating this problem. Today we know. The answer is to repeal the RFS before it puts millions of vehicles and many motorists at risk.

W&W MAGIC BUS–How about a Blue Bird Cummins diesel 94 as an office?
Well W&W one of the big four in Europe in distributing and manufacturing parts made that choice.
Now we are talking when you are mobile heading for a show and while at the showbooth.
The American Army sold the bus to them and then they repainted it in Woodstock era graphics.
Indoors they made a wooden floor and special rails to hook the bikes to while travelling.
The positive side is also that even fellow drivers on the freeway smiles for ones…yeah custom guys too.
W&W this may will launch their CANNONBALL magwheels 16 and 19 inch, it`s a flavor of the old ‘70s American mags. Now more reliable aluminum is replacing magnesium.

WIMMER TAKES BEST OF SHOW IN CHARLOTTE– Easyriders Show January 26, 2013
This past weekend, the Mid-Atlantic region was host to a show that never disappoints. That was the Easyriders 2013 Bike Show presented by Geico and Dennis Kirk. An annual event in North Carolina where literally thousands of people flocked to the Charlotte Convention Center to view a vast array of some of the coolest custom bikes on the east coast. This region of the country has some of the best builders in the world, so the competition is ALWAYS a very close contest. This year, the best of show was history in the making.
The best of show went to IMBBA Master Builder and Hall of Fame Member, Lee Wimmer of Wimmer Custom Cycle in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Not a huge surprise given the track record of this great builder and humanitarian.
The surprising thing might be the brand of bike the custom build was created from a SX 650 Yamaha. Actually, the only thing Yamaha is the motor. The entire rest of this exquisite bike is hand built by Lee Wimmer himself.
John Greene of Easyriders said “This is the first time in history that a metric bike under 1000cc has won best of show.”
Congrats to Lee from all his pals and fans for a job well done.

NEWS FROM MASTER ARTIST DON NOWELL–I want to thank you for letting Paul do a story about my racing past that led to the new art work for your website.
I am going to build a 1/4 scale bike for a salt runner, since I have some slick tires, they will work fine, and I have 12 new sets of Shovel heads and barrels that I install on my Evo case.
I was wondering what head angle do you run on the salt, as my frame fixture is adjustable so the Softails are 32 degrees and the Knuckle choppers were 40 degrees. If I need more than 40, I can put more in and also what kind of ride height, maybe 3 or 4 inches or less?
–Don
They are full size Machine Center’s either Fadel or Haas, we used a small dia. .062 wide fine tooth slitting saw and had the teeth ground with a full radius so the bottom of the cut is round like a casting is.
Then cut the outside shape of the fins, then bored the holes for the intake & exhaust ports and pressed in the tubes and the bead blast last.
I have used slitting saws a lot and I guess when you flood the part with coolent it takes the chips out so good that there were no saw marks from the sides of the saw blade, so the bead blast makes it look like a real casting.
Still need to make a manifold & carb. I was going to have lost wax castings made but this CNC does so good, I think I will go with it again for these too.
This model stuff can sure drive a guy nuts with all the little details, but in the end it is worth it, because they look pretty darn good all done up in a nice pearl & candy paint job.

RAY LAHOOD RESIGNING AS TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY–
WASHINGTON (AP) – Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the only Republican still in President Barack Obama’s first-term Cabinet, said Tuesday he plans to leave the Obama administration.
LaHood, a former congressman from Illinois, pushed for greater safety on the highways and in the air. He led the Transportation Department throughout Obama’s first term and helped steer a number of safety measures and highway projects, including steps to curb distracted driving, promote high-speed rail and repair roads and bridges. Under his watch, the department demanded tougher fuel efficiency requirements for automakers and took steps to address airline pilot fatigue.
In a statement released Tuesday, President Obama said: “I want to thank Secretary LaHood for his dedication, his hard work, and his years of service to the American people…I also want to thank Ray for his friendship.”
“Under his leadership, we have made significant investments in our passenger rail system and laid the groundwork for the high-speed rail network of the future. And every American who travels by air, rail or highway can thank Ray for his commitment to making our entire transportation system safer and stronger,” President Obama said in the statement.
LaHood said in an interview with The Associated Press that he told Obama a week after the November election that he needed to move on but said he was still “conflicted” by his decision because he liked working for Obama and considered it the “best job I’ve ever had in public service.”
He said he plans to remain at the department until his successor is confirmed by the Senate, which he expected in about two months. The only other Republican who was in Obama’s first-term Cabinet was Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who stepped aside and was replaced by Democrat Leon Panetta earlier.
LaHood said he would not run for public office in his home state of Illinois and said he did not have any specific plans.
Perhaps LaHood’s most passionate work has involved distracted driving, which he has called a “national epidemic.” He has launched a national media campaign to end texting and cellphone use by drivers, an awareness campaign that has drawn comparisons to efforts to promote seat belt use more than a generation ago.
The grandfather of 10, LaHood has often emphasized the toll that deaths and injuries from distracted driving can inflict on families.
“Safety will be something that people will remember us for in all modes of transportation,” LaHood said.

BIKERNET DESERT TARANTULA EDITOR REQUEST–Arizona Bike Week is coming up and I’d like to cover it for Bikernet. The event, which drew a record 70,000 participants last year, is known for its signature charity and self-guided rides into Arizona’s otherworldly scenery, exploring ghost towns, red rock wonderlands, desert rivers and lakes, Indian ruins and the best the Valley of the Sun offers. Six new rides are expected to added to the schedule this year.
ABW (April 5-14, including Pre-Rally Days) is also recognized for its headliner concert series, which is included in the price of daily admission. This year, the Doobie Brothers and Third Eye Blind head the bill. The 10-day event is celebrated around town and statewide. I believe there are a few angles we could cover.

His request must be assigned to an adhoc editorial committee and studied for six weeks. It must be analyzed by the Bikernet Environmental Safety Committee, then turned over to the Bikernet Security team. The Bikernet Board of Directors cannot consider his request without a notarized letter from each agency, but we’ll let you know. –Bandit

CALIFORNIA GUN LEGISLATION FROM THE BIKERNET GUN NUT COMMITTEE–Anti-Gun Democrats Again Working to Further Erode Second Amendment Rights in Sacramento In an attempt to exploit the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy to further destroy the Second Amendment in the Golden State, anti-gun Democrats in the state Assembly have introduced several anti-gun bills that they will be working to bully through the California Legislature this year. These egregious bills will have no effect on crime. According to the Brady Campaign’s national ranking of state gun control laws, California is already THE “best” (most restrictive) state in the nation and has already banned pseudo “assault weapons.”
By definition, violent and insane criminals violate laws, especially gun control laws. They neither obey gun bans, nor register their firearms and absolutely do not comply with any gun control schemes whatsoever. As a result, innocent law-abiding citizens are the only ones who pay the price and are left defenseless and made victims or criminals.
Not only are anti-gun legislators NOT concerned about law-abiding citizens, they are not even concerned whether or not they are actually violating the law with their egregious legislation. At Tuesday’s hearing, former state Senate Pro Tem Don Perata gave advice to the comittee members on how to deal with gun legislation by telling them, “Don’t worry about legalities – that’s why we have courts.”
Please call AND e-mail your state Assemblyman TODAY and urge him or her to OPPOSE the following bills that were announced by the anti-gun Democratic Assembly:
AB 48, introduced by “F” rated Assemblyman Nancy Skinner, would require reporting of ammunition sales, licensing of ammunition dealers and other controls of ammunition, similar to firearms. This bill would also expand the definition of large capacity magazine to include any readily restorable or disassembled magazine that appears to hold more than ten rounds, and would require notification to local law enforcement if an individual buys anything more than a small amount of ammunition in a five-day period.
AB 169, introduced by “F” rated state Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, would prohibit members of the general public from transferring any handgun that is not on, or drops off of, the state’s roster of approved handgun, to anyone other than a family member or spouse.
AB 174, introduced by anti-gun Assemblyman Rob Bonita, would remove the grandfather clause on existing firearms that are currently illegal to purchase, but are legal to possess if they were owned prior to making the firearm illegal.
AB 187, also introduced by Assemblyman Bonita, would impose an additional tax on the sale of ammunition.,
These anti-gun bills are expected to be introduced soon:
· “F” rated Assemblyman Luis Alejo is expected to introduce a bill that would prohibit a person who illegally sells or buys firearms or ammunition for ten years.
· “D-” rated Assemblyman Tom Ammiano is expected to introduce a bill mandating firearm storage.
· “F” rated Assemblyman Roger Dickinson is expected to introduce two more bills placing an additional .05 cent tax on the purchase of ammunition and require companies who manufacture, sell, distribute or market firearms or ammunition to divest investment funds from the State and would prohibit those companies from future investments.
The following anti-gun bills listed below have already been introduced:
SB 53, introduced by “F” rated state Senator Kevin de León, would require ammunition purchasers to obtain a permit and pay an annual fee (tax). This bill will also ban online and mail order sales of all ammunition, and require registration and thumbprinting for all ammunition purchases.
SB 47 , introduced by “F” rated state Senator Leland Yee, would expand the prohibitions on the sale and possession of “assault weapons” to include hundred of firearms currently lawful for sale in California.
SB 108 , also introduced by state Senator Yee, would require a firearm to be placed in a locked container or otherwise be disassembled each time the owner leaves his or her property.
AJR 5, introduced by “F” rated state Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez, would urge the President and Congress to support and pass Senator Feinstein’s proposed legislation prohibiting the sale, transfer, importation, and manufacturing of assault weapons, and large-capacity magazines.
HR 1, introduced by “F” rated state Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, would be a standing rule of the Assembly, which would state, a person, except a peace officer acting within the scope of his or her employment, may not carry or possess a firearm on the floor of the Assembly during any session of the Assembly or in a committee hearing room during any meeting of a committee or subcommittee.
The NRA will continue to monitor these onerous bills against law-abiding citizens. In the meantime, call AND e-mail your Assemblyman urging him or her to protect law-abiding citizens instead of penalizing them for the criminal activity of others. Contact information for your Assemblyman can be found here.
ANOTHER WILD WEEKEND AFOOT—This year has been non-stop so far. Hell, I even need to finish my front fender tonight. It’s been daily action and Bikernet content. As Bikernet readers you will be the first to see the action on a daily basis.
As I put the mudflap Girl back together I will test Centramatic wheel balancers from Bikers Choice. Tobey is testing his skills at manufacturing highly intricate US Choppers board-track gas tanks.
You’ll read the Big Bear Chopper story over the next couple of days, and see how the new owner is handling the future and the past debt.
I have another Tail Gunner tech about the changes he’s making to his King. I’m not sure about that color.
And for my surprise of the week, here’s the first concept drawing of our 5-Ball Racing streamlined trike. Let me know what you think.
