Exciting times all around, to say the least. Tomorrow heading to the V-Twin show in Cincinnati to shake up the industry regarding EPA regs. A few months ago we asked the question: What if all of transportation had but a 13 percent impact on CO2? Is that a 13 percent impact on Global Warming or Climate Change? The answer is no! It’s way smaller than that.
So, why would our own government beat on us so hard. Anyway, the Dealers at the V-Twin show will find out when we show them the documentary, “Climate Hustle” at 1:00 in the convention center. Then we’ll discuss strategies for freedom.

NEW PLATOONING TRUCK BILL IN SOUTH CAROLINA– This bill is getting fast tracked here in South Carolina and I am wondering if any other states are seeing this and have motorcycles been tested for the “cut in”.

SC Bill Advances to Allow Trucks to “Platoon”

A South Carolina House subcommittee unanimously passed a bill Tuesday afternoon to allow trucks to follow each other much closer than they’re allowed to now, a process known as “platooning.” The bill would apply only to trucks with new technology that links them to the trucks they’re following.
The new technology includes cameras, radar, and lasers, as well as the ability to link trucks’ accelerators and brakes. That way, if the technology on the lead truck spots a problem ahead, all the trucks would slow down or brake without the drivers having to take action.
Following closer improves fuel efficiency, with proponents saying the technology could save up to 8 billion gallons of diesel a year nationwide when fully implemented.
But Rep. Garry Smith, R-Simpsonville, the sponsor of the bill, says it will also save lives. “It looks beyond the truck, looks beyond the car. It can see things that are taking place up ahead of those vehicles and make appropriate adjustments for what’s taking place up ahead. They estimate that it’s going to be a tremendous saving of lives, both in the automotive as well as the trucking industry,” he says.
Rick Todd, president of the South Carolina Trucking Association, says the technology is similar to what’s being used in driverless cars. “Only the larger, more sophisticated fleets are looking at this right now, but it is coming. It’s not driverless trucks, it’s driver assistance, and it can be interrupted and then re-engaged.”
The bill simply adds an exception for trucks with the technology to the current state law that prohibits following too closely. “As technology advances, we also have to kind of bring our codes up to par with that,” said Rep. Joshua Putnam, R-Piedmont, chairman of the subcommittee.
The bill now goes to the full House Education and Public Works Committee.
We need to find out if the system recognizes motorcycles. So we’d need to know whose technology this is. Asking the trucking industry would. It be the right place to start, I’m thinking.

THE SEARCH IS ON FOR THE CONFEDERATE HARLEY–
In the days before rampant political correctness became the dominant paradigm the Harley-Davidson Motor Company released a series of “Confederate Edition” motorcycles.
In 1977 these included Sportsters, Super Glides and FLs such as the one shown here. I am seeking information on these models but in particular the FLs. It seems that any information on these has been expunged from Harley-Davidson historical publications, whether factory authorized or independently authored. OHIO STAKEHOLDERS MEETING–
Hello All, Heads up from Ohio! We had our semiannual Motorcycle Ohio Stakeholders Committee Meeting 1.18.17 at the Ohio Department of Public Safety with all branches of ODPS in attendance.
At this meeting we reviewed all 2016 “Cash Data” available at this time, with 192 confirmed Motorcycle Fatalities in 2016, the 2nd highest MC Fatalities total on Ohio roads since statistic have been recorded.
NO mention of any proposed Mandatory Helmet Law Legislation was introduced. But!!! At the end of the Meeting and off the Record, Robert Wakefield (Director of Ohio Transportation Safety Office, the stat guys) did ask me if it was OK to start tracking Motorcycle Helmet Use in Ohio this year? I replied that ABATE has unofficially tracked Helmet use at the many “Bike Nights” we set up at around the State each week during Riding Season and our observation was about 60% usage by choice of the riders in attendance and that ABATE of Ohio, Inc. would vigorously oppose any Mandatory Helmet Legislation if introduced

TWIN RIVERS CHOPPER CAMP OUT FOR 2017– The event announcements for 2017 are already starting to roll in and while most of us are sitting around the shop staring at our dusty motorcycles, Zac Gibbons is hard at work putting together an event he calls the “Twin Rivers Chopper Camp Out”. Held August 18-20th at the Twin Rivers Campground in Crumpler, NC.
it promises three days of riding through Appalachian Mountains followed by nights camping on the banks of the New River. Take note that this is an event for choppers, so while technically you don’t have to have a chopper to attend, people might look at you strange if you trailer your new Ultra Classic to the campground.
Unless you live in western NC, you’ve probably never even heard of the community of Crumpler, but if you look on a map you’ll see it’s located in the northwestern corner of the state.
Basically you just ride north until your almost in Virginia then hang a left and ride west until your almost in Tennessee.
This puts you right in the heart of the Appalachian mountains with great roads to explore, literally in every direction.
With seven months until the Twin Rivers Chopper Camp Out, you’ve got plenty of time to finish that chopper project you started on this winter.
That also means there are seven more months of planning and I’ll be updating this page to reflect new details as they are available. TRUMP REAFFIRMS LAW AND ORDER, GUN RIGHTS VOWS– The Trump administration’s revamped White House website promises law and order and the protection of gun rights, as well as several other policy priorities for the new president.
Changes to the website were implemented just moments after President Donald Trump’s swearing in on Friday. In a section titled “Standing Up For Our Law Enforcement Community,” the 45th president outlined his commitment to fighting crime.
“A Trump Administration will empower our law enforcement officers to do their jobs and keep our streets free of crime and violence,” reads the website, echoing sentiments made on the campaign trail. “The dangerous anti-police atmosphere in America is wrong. The Trump Administration will end it.”
Under the previous administration, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and the Department of Justice worked tirelessly to implement reforms to police departments nationwide through consent decrees, legally binding agreements that work to enforce top to bottom changes in law enforcement procedures. DOJ investigations found patterns of police abuses in cities like Baltimore and Chicago, and then worked to implement the decrees.
Trump’s pick for attorney general, Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, has called the consent decree process “dangerous” and part of an “agenda that’s been a troubling issue for a number of years.”
The Trump administration’s new policy statement also includes comments that some believe are directed at the Black Lives Matter movement.
“Our job is not to make life more comfortable for the rioter, the looter, or the violent disrupter,” reads the new White House website. “Our job is to make life more comfortable for parents who want their kids to be able to walk the streets safely. Or the senior citizen waiting for a bus. Or the young child walking home from school.”
“It was chilling to see such unambiguous evidence of his contempt for those who’ve protested against police violence,” wrote Leon Neyfakh for Slate.com. “Insofar as the Obama administration was an ally to Black Lives Matter … Trump has now promised, in his official capacity as the 45th president of the United States, to be its enemy.”
Trump also outlined a commitment to gun rights on the new website, saying his administration will defend Americans’ ability to protect themselves.
“We will uphold Americans’ Second Amendment rights at every level of our judicial system,” reads the post.
Other issues outlined on the new White House website include an energy plan, a foreign policy position, a jobs plan, a vow to strengthen the military, and comments on trade deals.

Abate of South Dakota is introducing a bill to make mounting motorcycle plates vertical OKAY. I just found out that our Dept of Public Safety/Highway patrol will be testifying against us. They say that the plates are hard to read. Does anyone have any data to prove otherwise? And does your state allow vertical plates?

(c) Official number plates when displayed upon motor vehicles shall be entirely unobscured and the numerals and letters thereon shall be plainly legible at all times. Such number plates shall be horizontal, and shall be fastened so as not to swing and, during the time when a motor vehicle is required to display lights, the rear number plate shall be so illuminated as to be legible at a distance of fifty feet. Nothing may be affixed to a motor vehicle or to the official number plates displayed on such vehicle that obscures or impairs the visibility of any information on such number plates.

Virginia does not specifically allow it but it is not prohibited. Our code maintains that it must be legible. Every now and then an officer will ticket a motorcyclist for having a vertical plate claiming it’s not legible. I will write the plate number across a legal pad and turn it vertically and ask the officer to read it. He does. Case dismissed. Once I had an officer turn his head sideways and claim difficulty. The judge still dismissed, but after looking at the officer as if he were a moron. Don’t know if that helps you or not but it does not seem to be an issue here.

Tennessee passed a vertical plate law a few years ago.
In Tennessee, every bill is accompanied by a Fiscal Note, laying out what the state will either gain or lose in state revenue if the bill is passed. This bill had a $1400 Fiscal Note that said it would cost the state $1400 in lost revenue from tickets that are issued for vertical plates every year.
As in your case, the Dept of Safety was against the bill because they would lose money.
Our House Sponsor was a very experienced old-school, motorcycle friendly Democrat. Our Senate sponsor was a motorcycle friendly Republican with just a few years of service under his belt. The Senator said the fiscal note would kill the bill. The House sponsor buried the bill in an Omnibus bill that authorized dozens of new vanity tags, each with a fiscal note that promised income for the state.
No one “uncovered” the vertical tag section in the House, and it was included in the Senate bill also, and both bills pass unanimously. An excellent lesson in learning that there are more than one way to skin a cat. All we did was select the best sponsors and keep quiet. SUCCESS!!

PA did it a couple years ago. Initially, Police weren’t too happy because of the scanners, but I believe the software in the scanners eventually could accommodate them.
That “stupid little license bill” became amended with PA’s 2.1 Billion Dollar Highway Bill, and was used as a vehicle to get the Highway Bill through quickly. That Highway Bill gave PA the highest liquid fuel tax in the country, along with many other fee increases. Perhaps that’s what made the Vertical License Plate Bill so attractive.
I can see where it would be a problem from an administrative or IT position. Re-printing of forms, changes to DOT software, etc. The plates have costs far beyond the cost of the actual plates. Not sure how many plates have actually been issued.
By the way, PA no longer has registration stickers for licenses. Instead, police cars are being equipped with scanners to scan license plates to see if registration has been paid (along with whatever else they scan for). Registration stickers were commonly stolen by vandals cutting the corner off license plates, to the point where people had to mount the license plates inside the vehicles.

VERTICAL MOTORCYCLE REGISTRATION PLATE
Act 89, signed into law on November 24, 2013, provides for the availability of a motorcycle registration plate designed to be displayed vertically. Vertical motorcycle plates are an option for motorcycle enthusiasts who prefer the positioning of vertical plates over horizontal plates.
The cost for the vertical motorcycle plate is $20. Applicants may apply by completing Form MV-165, “Application for a Vertical Motorcycle Registration Plate.”
A horizontal motorcycle registration plate may not be displayed vertically.

Although it appears that is not legal here in Alaska either, it is a very common practice and I am unaware of any specific enforcement efforts. I am sure it is one of those things where, if they are looking for something, they may write it up or use it as “Probable Cause” for a stop.
“Sec. 28.10.171. Display of registration plates.
(a) When two registration plates are issued for a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which issued, one in front and the other in the rear. When one registration plate is issued, it shall be attached to the rear of the vehicle for which issued.
(b) Every registration plate issued under this chapter shall be securely fastened to the vehicle to which it is assigned, with the upper edge of the plate horizontal, at a height of not less than 12 inches from the ground measuring from the bottom of the plate, and maintained in a location and condition so as to be clearly legible. However, when considered necessary to insure legibility, the commissioner may provide by regulation for another method of installation.”

New York Myke has always been a man who speaks about what he believes in, and this is no exception. I think he’s absolutely right that the “mission” of Bikers for Trump” was on the mark, but the execution seems to have fell way below expectations.
As with any big, well advertised event, you’re bound to attract a lot of extra baggage, people jumping onto the bandwagon, and entrepreneurs who want to capitalize on opportunities of self-promotion, financial gains and more.
I did not attend this event, and really didn’t ever want to, because I assumed it would be a cluster from the start. I agree with Myke that planning on getting thousands of bikers to attend an event in January in Washington, D.C. with hopes of filling the city with motorcycles was overly ambitious. Even if were possible, once in the city, where would they all go and how would they even get near the heavily secured area?
Finally, I also agree that it’s despicable that the protestors tried to prevent people and families from attending the inauguration events, and it’s disheartening that our country continues on a downward spiral of separation of the masses.
I look at a presidential election as a vote for America’s future, not particularly a vote for an individual. Sure, you hope your candidate is the right one, but in the end, moving America forward is the goal, and supporting the administration toward that end is crucial.
Protesting or seeking relief from bad decisions in government is part of that process, but there is a process that should be followed to ensure everyone’s rights are protected. I appreciate Myke’s candor and comments, and his patriotism is beyond question. Thanks for this view from within the barricades and security fences. I hope you get the answers to those important questions you asked.

BIKERS FOR TRUMP– look to exercise some political muscle.
The bikers stood out at the weekend’s inauguration events in Washington with their leathers and colors, a visual reminder of the often-overlooked Americans who came out of the woodwork to unexpectedly propel Donald Trump to the White House.
Bikers for Trump grew from a quirky fan club to a grass-roots political phenomenon and unofficial security detail at Trump campaign events — and the bikers are sticking around as shock troops for President Trump’s agenda, said Chris Cox, who founded the group that now boasts roughly 230,000 members.
“In another three to four months, we’ll be the size of the Christian Coalition,” he told The Washington Times at the group’s Inauguration Day rally just off the National Mall. “We hope to come out of the gate strong with a legislative presence in Washington.”
Recognizing the contribution Bikers for Trump made to his election victory, Mr. Trump telephoned Mr. Cox before the inauguration to thank him.
“We had a matter-of-fact conversation like I would have with one of my old college buddies,” said Mr. Cox. “He told me what a huge impact we had — as much as anybody. And how it’s the birth of a new demographic, one that he hopes will be a sweet spot for the Republican Party for years to come.”
With the help of Republican lawmakers who joined them on the campaign trail, such as Rep. Robert Pittenger, North Carolina Republican, the bikers also plan to push some of their own legislative agenda on veterans and motorcycle issues.

WEIRD NEWS: WOMEN ARRESTED FOR RIDING A MOTORCYCLE–
Iranian police arrested two women for riding a motorcycle in a western city — an incident that went viral when images appeared online and sparked a social-media backlash against the country’s political and religious authorities.
State news agency IRNA said the two women were detained in Dezful, whose law enforcement chief, Ali Elhami, accused them of committing an “ugly” act that breaks the “religious norms” of the conservative Islamic-led nation.
IRNA quoted Elhami as saying he ordered the women’s arrest after online images of the two women riding the motorcycle and being surrounded by male onlookers at a local park prompted complaints about the women’s dress, appearance and interaction with the men. The two women will be judged for breaking “revolutionary norms and values.”
Women in Iran are barred from obtaining licenses to drive motorcycles in public.

LATEST ON THE NEW RPM ACT– Senate Joins House in Support of the RPM Act
It was a one-two punch for motorcycle and race car enthusiasts during the month of January. Following the January 6th introduction by the House of Representatives, the Senate released its version, (S.203) of the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2017 (RPM Act). Introduced by Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), the bill already has a number of supporters from both political parties. Similarly, the House version (HR.350) has 73 supporters though this number grows by the day.
Like the version pending in the House, the Senate bill ensures that transforming motor vehicles, including motorcycles, into race cars or racing bikes used exclusively in competition does not violate the Clean Air Act. The issue came to a head when EPA officials insisted that they have the authority to regulate the racing industry according to the Clean Air Act. The RPM Act would clarify that the Clean Air Act does indeed allow motor vehicles, including motorcycles, to be converted into dedicated race vehicles without fear of EPA penalties or enforcement action.
Similar bills surfaced last year but ultimately fell short of passage before the 114th Congress adjourned in December of 2016. Proponents of the amateur racing industry and others including the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, and the Specialty Equipment Market Association have included passage of the RPM Act as one of their key priorities in the 2017 legislative season. Both organizations among several others were listed as supporters on Senator Burr’s press release on S.203:

“The Clean Air Act was never intended to allow the EPA to regulate race cars or motorcycles,” said Megan Ekstrom, Vice-President of Government Affairs for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. “This is, unfortunately, yet another example of an agency’s overreach.”
Over 200,000 letters were sent last year to Congress in support of passage of the RPM Act last year. The bills will now go through the legislative process in which many are hopeful the proposals will cross the finish line.

Bikers for Trump Founder on Clashes with Protesters on Inauguration Day
Bikers for Trump founder Chris Cox joined FOX Business to share his experience at President Donald Trump’s inauguration in Washington, D.C. this weekend, which included some violent interactions with protesters.
“We had many clashes of our own. We served many knuckle sandwiches. We had a couple of nose rings knocked out of some protesters,” Cox said.
Cox highlighted one incident, where he said a protester spat on a biker and made an explicit gesture toward him.
“The biker gave him a knuckle sandwich, dislodged the nose ring and then he massaged his face with his knuckles several times after that,” he said. “The police witnessed it, they walked up, they believed that the biker had reason to believe the protester was there to do harm to him, and they told the biker to have a nice day.”
Despite the skirmishes with protesters, Cox said not one biker was arrested.
“We’ve never had a biker arrested at any of our events. And those were just two of the five encounters that we had with protesters,” he said.
