JURY AWARDS $2.8 MILLION TO BIKER’S FAMILY– DAYTONA BEACH — The young daughter of a 23-year-old Palm Coast man killed while riding his motorcycle has been awarded a $1 million verdict for damages.
The jury award was part of $2.8 million in total damages granted Friday to the survivors of Brian R. Heikkila, who died when a car struck his motorcycle May 30, 2007, on Clyde Morris Boulevard in Daytona Beach.
The family’s attorney, David Sweat, expressed some degree of satisfaction, even though no amount of money will bring Heikkila back.
“I am very satisfied that the jury awarded this child double what we had asked for,” Sweat said.
According to court records, Heikkila, who worked as a manager for Walmart, was riding his motorcycle near Halifax Health Medical Center. A car driven by Michael T. Hemphill collided with Heikkila, resulting in his death.
The negligence claim was based on the fact that Hemphill failed to yield the right of way while driving a Ford Mustang, the plaintiff’s lawyer said.
The suit sought damages for pain, suffering and mental anguish.
After the issue of liability was determined by Circuit Judge Richard Graham, the jury assessed how much damages should be paid to Heikkila’s survivors.
In addition to $1 million awarded to Heikkila’s 5-year-old daughter, Ryleigh, his parents will each receive $500,000 under the verdict. Another $798,000 was awarded for economic damages, including $4,200 for funeral expenses, Sweat said.
The award was high, but not near the highest granted in Volusia County.
The record verdict reached here was in 2007 when $110 million was awarded against Glenn Lamar Swain for sexual abuse.
Heikkila moved to the area in 2005 from Georgia.
He enjoyed skateboarding, the outdoors and was a member of Tomoka Christian Church, his family said.

AUSTRALIAN BIKERS COMPLY WITH DISMANTLING FORTIFICATIONS– Western Australian police say the Coffin Cheaters motorcycle club has complied with a notice to remove fortification from its clubhouse in Bayswater – Perth
The notice to remove the fortification was issued by the Corruption and Crime Commission in January. Police say they inspected the premises two weeks ago and most of the fortification had been removed but a few minor changes were still needed.
They inspected the premises again last week and say the work has been completed to the satisfaction of the Police Commissioner. Police say a notice demanding removal of fortification is an exceptional power and can only be applied at premises or clubs whose members are suspected of being involved in organised crime.

UNCLE MONKEY ON CHANGING TIMES– I quickly recognized the rumbling Shovelhead when it pulled along side of me. The bike belonged to my friend Tom for decades, and even though he returned it to the original sheet metal I would know that bike anywhere. However, the familiar smiling face was not my friend’s but his son Mark.
I’ve known Mark since he was a little gapper sitting on the floor of the Tom’s garage playing with his toys as we fixed Shovelheads those late nights years ago. As Mark grew into a rebellious young teenager he considered the hero he looked up to, was now an incompetent fool. Mark laughed at us as we toiled over the Shovelhead as he changed the trucks and install new bearings on his skateboard. He told his dad to buy a new bike, to let the old tired iron rust away, that we were too old to be playing with bikes.
To him we were a couple of foolish old bikers refusing to change. He said we couldn’t understand him and his music or his passion for the skate park and the exhilaration he got when he learned a new trick. Tom and I would smile and go back to our bikes without saying a thing.
Tom finally broke down and bought a new StreetGlide, the reason to return the stock tins to the Shovelhead and he was splitting his time between the two bikes. I wasn’t surprised to see Mark on the old Shovelhead. The young boy playing with his dump truck on the garage floor is now a young man, working full time for his father’s company.
Tom never pushed his son to ride, taking him along when he wanted, leaving him be when he didn’t want to. Mark grew up in a house with a motorcycle. He fell asleep to the sound of Harleys tearing off into the night. He had seen the love and attention a bike deserved.
Mark now knows why his dad didn’t question him about the thrill of skateboarding, the countless hours he spent at the skate park, just hanging out, blasting back and forth. Tom never asked him to explain. As his smiling face shot across the intersection in command of the Shovelhead Mark finally knew his father simply understood. Tom and Mark ride side by side now, two men, father and son joined not only by blood but the road and the Shovelhead roar.

National Motorcycle Museum Vintage Rally Bike Show– The date for the first annual National Motorcycle Museum Vintage Rally Bike Show has been set as June 4, 2011. The show is open to all 1985 and earlier American, British, Japanese and European motorcycles, scooters and minis, racing, street and custom bikes.
Award plaques will be given for first and second place in each class, plus one Best of Show winner for American, British, Japanese and European. There will also be an award for the overall Best Preserved, the Best Unrestored motorcycle and an overall Best in Show.
The Vintage Bike Show is part of the National Motorcycle Museum’s Vintage Rally, June 3-5 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa. In addition to the show, the Museum will dedicate its new special exhibition, Motorcycles at Work showcasing police, military, courier and other commercial and special purpose motorcycles.
A Sunday morning ride and lunch will be held, hosted by Motorcycle Classics magazine over the weekend and there will be the 62nd Annual Motorcycle Hill Climb and Swap Meet by the Midwest Hillclimber’s, across the Wapsipinicon River from the Museum. This event will include a special Vintage Hill Climb class, sponsored by the National Motorcycle Museum and J&P Cycles.

PENIS BURNING WIFE GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER, NOT MURDER, WALKS FREE–A South Australian woman who killed her husband after trying to set his penis on fire has been found not guilty of his murder, but guilty of manslaughter and received a suspended sentence.
A Supreme Court jury, after deliberating for nine hours over two days, ruled Rajini Narayan guilty of her husband’s manslaughter after clearing her of murder in a majority verdict.
Nayaran, who threw petrol and a lit candle on Satish Narayan, said she was only trying to burn the tip of his penis, and she had no intention of killing him.
Satish died 20 days after his wife confronted him about a suspected affair in their Unley home in December 2008.
The prosecution argued the affair, and two decades of beatings, were the motivating factor in the crime – a claim Narayan denied.
“I did not like to be beaten (but) I told myself I had to be better, I have to try harder,” she told the court.
“I deserved it because, in my mind, I was not the perfect wife for my perfect husband… I idolised him, he was my hero.
“I did not speak back to him because you do not fight with your god.”
She claimed the burning was a purifying process she decided on after discovering emails and letters that convinced her that her husband was having an affair.
“A bizarre idea came to me… I would use a candle to burn the tip of his penis,” she said.
“It would be like circumcision, or just like he placed that red dot on my forehead at our wedding.
“It was like I had all the powers of the goddess to save my husband, my lord… it did not occur to me that it was going to be dangerous.”

AUSTRALIAN LAWYERS OPPOSE VICTORIAN ANTI-BIKIE LAW–
Laws designed to crack down on bikie gangs in the Australian state of Victoria could be abused to criminalise other groups the government dislikes, a legal group says.
Premier Ted Baillieu said today the government is working on legislation to outlaw criminal bikie gangs.
There have been reports of interstate gangs moving into Victoria after the introduction of tougher laws in NSW and South Australia.
The Law Institute of Victoria’s (LIV) James Dowsley urged the government not to outlaw bikie gangs.
He said existing laws adequately deal with drug dealing, violence offences and planning to commit crimes.
“We oppose laws that make criminals out of a whole class of people,” Mr Dowsley said today.
“The LIV is concerned that this could be extended to any group that the government does not approve of.”
Mr Dowsley said the legislation could extend to associates of an outlawed group, such as family members or lawyers.
“Even an email or a phone call could make you an associate of a group and leave you liable to a prison sentence,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO STABBING– The stabbing was reported at about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday near Market and Taylor streets, police said.
Two men, ages 35 and 39, were leaving the concert venue when they were approached by a group of about 10 men who were wearing Hells Angels jackets and had apparently also been at the concert, police Sgt. Mike Andraychak said.
One of the suspects asked the 35-year-old victim if he was a member of the Mongols, a rival motorcycle gang, police said. Andraychak said neither victim is believed to be associated with any motorcycle gang.
The victims ran away and were chased by the suspects, who caught up with them and stabbed the 35-year-old man several times, police said.
The man suffered stab wounds to the back of his head and neck and a laceration to his lip. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are believed to be life-threatening.
The other victim was not injured in the attack.
The suspects fled the scene on their motorcycles and had not been found as of this afternoon, Andraychak said.
They are described as white men in their 30s or 40s, at least one of whom had a full Hells Angels logo on his jacket, Andraychak said. Others had partial patches, signifying that they are “prospects or pledges” to the gang but are not yet full members, he said.
The two motorcycle gangs have a history of run-ins in San Francisco and throughout California, Andraychak said.
In 2008, Mark “Papa” Guardado, 46, was fatally shot outside a bar in the city’s Mission District.
Guardado was the leader of the San Francisco chapter of the Hells Angels and his alleged shooter, Christopher Ablett, was a reputed member of the Mongols.
Federal murder and racketeering charges were filed against Ablett.
The case is still pending in federal court.

THE BENEFITS OF RIDING MOTORCYCLES DURING A TOUGH ECONOMIC CLIMATE–While the economy has been tough on drivers with the recent spike in gas prices, it’s actually driving people to shop for motorcycles.
Roger Mudd of Doc’s Harley Davidson in Kirkwood has seen the coincidence. “We’ve had quite a few people come in here lately,” Mudd says, “mentioning that one of the things that finally brought them in and finally tipped them over to buying a motorcycle is high gas prices.”
At the moment, business is motoring into the Doc’s Harley Davidson showroom floor.”Right now, we’re just having record sales right now: adds Mudd, “We just have people coming in out of the woodwork. A lot of them just have fun and gas prices definitely help that out.”
Mudd also says the mileage comparison to a standard car is what keeps selling these motorcycles.”A tank on one of these will take you just as far as it will on the average car, only for a whole lot less money. These things are getting about 45-50 miles to the gallon.”
Across the street from Doc’s, Keith Brewer met with his weekly riding group, and he agreed that the hike in gas prices are seeing his motorcycle drive more practical miles.”It’s getting more and more economical every day now.” Brewer laughed, “No doubt about it. It won’t be long if gas gas keeps going where it is, I will be riding my motorcycle to work.”
Because Keith’s alternative option does not make much sense in the budget right now.”You don’t want to know, but I’ll confess, I have a Tahoe at home that just loves gas. I think I get about 15 miles to the gallon, whereas a lot of these bikes get 45, 50, maybe even 60 miles to the gallon.”
So try as they might, Roger Mudd insists gas prices will never intimidate the bikers of the world.”What better way to fight the man than to get yourself on the American Freedom Machine. Have some two-wheeled fun and save some gas.”

the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road.
A cop pulls him over. ‘So,’ says the cop to the driver, ‘where have ya been?’
‘Why, I’ve been to the pub of course,’ slurs the Irishman.
‘Well,’ says the cop, ‘it looks like you’ve had quite a few to drink this evening.’
‘I did all right,’ the drunk says with a smile.
‘Did you know,’ says the cop, standing straight, and folding his arms across his chest, ‘that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?’
‘Oh, thank heavens,’ sighs Paddy. ‘for a minute there, I thought I’d gone deaf.’
THE SEARCH FOR A DAVID MAN CENTERSPREAD–
Long story short, my boyfriend has exactly zero pictures of himself as a baby. His mother once told him that when he was a baby, he was in a picture in an Easyriders story? picture spread? of a biker wedding – probably in northern California – as he was the “ring bearer” (he was too young so an adult was holding him and the ring pillow was propped on his lap?) for the couple getting married.
Both of us aren’t too confident about the credibility of this story because his mom’s stories don’t always add up. But both of us hope against all hope that maybe, just maybe, this isn’t one of her lies.
So, I’ve spent time here and there for the past six months scouring the internet looking for an issue that looks like it matches up. And I thought I found it and spent $11 bucks on the January 1978 issue only to be disappointed that there weren’t any babies in any of the wedding pictures.
My boyfriend was born April 1977 so, if the story is right, I’m guessing the picture might have been in an issue sometime starting then up until June 1978? I don’t figure there’s much point in looking at issues after that unless you all were in the habit of printing pictures well after they were taken.
His birthday is Sunday and, while I don’t hold much hope that I can get the right magazine in my hands before then, at least maybe I can get it soon enough after then.

WISCONSIN OFFERS OFFICIAL HARLEY-BRANDED LICENSE PLATES– Harley-Davidson has partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WDOT) to offer the Harley-Davidson “Share the Road” license plate for cars, light trucks and motor homes. The plate officially launches today.
The new plate is the first and only Harley-Davidson-branded one available anywhere in the United States. It was designed in collaboration with the Harley-Davidson Motor Co. Styling Team. The words “Share the Road” are displayed to emphasize the importance of motorcycle safety.
Cost of the plates includes any regular registration fees that apply along with a $15 issuance fee and an annual $25 donation to help support safety initiatives throughout the state. The plates also can be personalized (standard annual fees apply) and purchased at any time, not just when a motorist renews their registration (actual costs will vary based on time of purchase).

This automobile has approximately 74,900 miles reading on the odometer, and believed to be actual from new. It was formerly a part of the famed “Movie World” collection in Ventura, California and James Brucker Sr. used this car for many years as his personal driver (1950-1965).
Although never restored, this 1931 Cadillac Roadster remains beautifully preserved, correct and complete today. As offered, this wonderful classic can be driven and enjoyed exactly as it is.

BAKER TIN TYPE PRIMARY (TTP)- NOSTALGIA WITH DEPENDABLITY!–Know this; S&S started some shit. A couple years ago they took the classic Shovel, Pan, and Knucklehead engine designs, and re-birthed them with many modern improvements to address leaks, durability, reliability, and performance. BAKER took the hint and re-engineered the venerable ratchet top and jockey top 4 speeds by integrating the classic external architecture with many modern internal improvements. The only piece of the puzzle missing was the primary. So BAKER took that classic 1936-64 tin design and re-constructed it with billet 6061-T6 aluminum to facilitate alternator left side motor case and 1990-2006 starter compatibility. And the tin primary leaks of the past are gone. The resulting TTP (Tin Type Primary) looks, feels and breathes nostalgia. Kick-only and starter configurations are available with shot blasted ‘raw’ or show polished finishes. The starter version is set up for factory 1.4kw 1990-2006 units. Stock tin derby and inspection covers will fit but the sleek TTP 6061-T6 aluminum covers are pure money. The chain tensioner design utilizes a fine tooth modern L-bracket, giving you plenty of room for any and all configurations.
The TTP can be ran wet or dry. The inner primary incorporates the chain oiler feed and return provisions on the back side similar to factory locations so you can continue to run Shovelhead era factory clutches; with all the fittings & hardware included. For a cleaner look with better clutch function, heat dissipation and dependability the TTP can be ran wet. By bypassing the conventional stock oil drip and suction lines, using the provided hardware, you can run the TTP just like a stock 1990-2006 primary.
TTP IS COMPATIBLE WITH:
– 1970-E84 Big Twins and custom 4-speed builds
– 1970-79 ratchet top 4-speeds (top or bottom pull)
– 1980-E84 turtle top 4-speeds (kick only TTP version)

TRIBUTE CAR WASH– Six year old Brenan Thomson and Rylan, his 5 year old brother, went for a ride on their bikes Saturday Afternoon and both boys were found in a canal near their Gilbert Home. Brenan is dead while his younger brother Rylan managed to survive with the help of a volunteer rescuer.
A Car wash will be held (Saturday April 23 between the hours of 9 AM-2PM) at Fat Willy’s , 9937 E. Baseline Road, # 10 in Mesa. If you can show up, please do and pass the word to others.

LAUGHLIN RIVER RUN–April 27 to May 1. Life is nuts. One of the Bikernet babes dyed her hair red and ran off with the blonde bombshell. As she peeled out she said, “Maybe you need to find another redhead. I know how it is.”
A reader wrote in the other day and said something about redheads, and me and suddenly the old itch surfaced. Then Ron from MetalSport wheels mentioned a meeting in Laughlin and I always remembered Laughlin as the singular hottest run for killer babes. Josh Placa mentioned whiskey, and I remember the last Laughlin event I attended. I snatched a ticket for flying along a two-laner at 98 mph, and the Jack Daniels booth stocked me up with Jack shot glasses while I watched their shapely bartenders fill ’em. I was beginning to itch for the open road and the girls of Laughlin.
It could mean trouble, but you only go around once. And suddenly a number of features are headed this way from another tire safety feature from the River Rat just in time for riding season. Gary Marz contacted me today with a behind the scenes story about the Hoka Hey run from Florida to Alaska. We have a couple of bike build features coming, one covers a twin cam blacked out Softail build, and the other rolled into the headquarters from a guy I worked with at Easyriders.
It’s about the FXR he bought and bobbed back in the ’90s. Then we will bring you the sordid history of Kenny Samson of Samson Exhaust. I rode with him back in the ’70s. Plus, we are hoping to bring you a re-man article on an Evo five to six speed transmission by the JIMS crew. They are set up to re-man almost any transmission you ship to them, and in many cases they can make that four-speed a five-speed, or that five-speed a six-speed. That’s not all. We are working on a tech with Metalsport Wheels to show you the machining differences between 2D and 3D wheels.
So, that’s all you’re gonna get outta me right now. I still need to flesh out a couple of book chapters, but the system is winding down.
