THURSDAY DAYTONA NEWS LINE UP FOR MARCH 8, 2012

Hey,

Why are Thursdays nuts? Everything is fine all week, then on the busiest day, the internet goes down, we face a devastating electrical grid surge, or a computer acts up. What the hell. So this morning, my e-mails won’t download, so I can’t finish collecting news items.

Fuck it, I’ll work on a motorcycle, call my son about his Mudflap FXR, and ponder all the content flying at Bikernet. We are about to launch our Bonneville 2012 sponsorship program, and we have several start-up tech articles about Ray’s 5-Ball Raycer and the Bonne Belle, hanging in the wings.

One of the major reasons for kicking off Bikernet Trikes and Baggers was to help out-of-work editors and writers. Many have been laid-off as magazines downsize. Recently, after the Rider group was purchased, the new owners took the titles to Chicago. Rumor has it, if you wanted to keep your job, you moved to Chicago. Many chose to stay on the coast and seek new employment.

As our Trike and Bagger effort grows we hope to hire and work with the talented brothers and sisters who are trying to make it in this tough economy.

BIKERNET TRIKE QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK–Why is a comment I posted not appearing on the Web site yet?

We review all comments before they get posted on the site. If you don’t see your submission posted, it may be because a) we haven’t gotten around to reviewing it yet, or b) it didn’t meet our editorial standards for posting. Or c) because we’re still hungover from our editorial meeting. Then there’s d) the editor fell in love with one of the Bikernet secretaries, and we haven’t seen either one for a week.

THE FAMOUS, TRADITIONAL BIRD DEFLECTORS FROM CUSTOM CYCLE ENGINEERING–This was one of Randy’s first products. In 1967, it was uncool to run an air filter. The old brass Linkert was the carb of the era. It was a common problem to have your pant leg sucked into the open venturi, which promptly killed the engine.

The Bird Deflector eliminated the problem, so they became a must on thousands of the day’s choppers. Randy advertised them saying, “They keep nesting birds, hand grenades and pant legs out of your Linkert carb.”

Now they are available again.

TRIAL STORY COMING–The trial of long-time Hells Angels Ventura charter President George Christie has been postponed for four months. Last Friday U.S. District Judge Jacqueline H. Nguyen ordered the trial continued until May 1. The trial had been scheduled to begin January 31.

The government is accusing Christie of being the godfather of the tattoo business in Ventura. The prosecutor in the case, Jay H. Robinson has alleged that Christie collected “taxes” from other tattoo parlors, ordered his competitors to abandon their businesses and firebombed those businesses whose owner’s did not.

As is true with most federal cases and virtually all federal cases against motorcycle club members, this case is significantly less clear cut than the headlines might suggest.

The Charges

Christie and four co-defendants were formally charged in a federal indictment on July 29, 2011 with “Conspiracy to Interfere with Commerce by Extortion,” “Attempted Interference with Commerce,” “Attempted Obstruction of Commerce,” “Conspiracy to Use Fire or Explosive to Damage Property” and two counts of “Use of Fire or Explosive to Damage Property.”

Christie was apparently offered a plea deal this Fall and when he didn’t roll over like Rover and beg for that he was hit with a superseding indictment five days before Christmas that added the federal charges of “Use or Carrying a Destructive Device During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence” and “Aiding and Abetting and Causing an Act to be Done” to the accusations against him.

The evidence against Christie, if there is any actual evidence against Christie, relies heavily on statements made by four confidential informants. It hypothetically amounts to about 4000 pages of statements, reports, transcripts and photos – which is the number of pages in a new case of printer paper. And so far Christie’s lawyer, a former federal prosecutor named W. Michael Mayock, has seen about a quarter of it.

She also loosened the restraints on Christie who has been under house arrest for the last six months. The same day she ordered that Christie, who has been prevented from earning a living since his arrest, will now be “permitted to work at his family-owned business, The Ink House, from Wednesdays through Sundays, from the hours of 12:00 noon through 6:00 p.m.”

We have Agent Zebra on the copy working with George on a story about his riding capabilities while he’s on house arrest. This should be good.

AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST– 5 Questions With U.S. Congressman, Off-Road Rider Tim Griffin.
U.S. Rep, Tim Griffin (R-Ark.) is a lawyer, veteran, off-road rider and member of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus who represents the Little Rock, Ark., metro area in Congress. We asked him a few questions to find out about his motorcycling experience, and what motorcyclists need to be aware of on Capitol Hill.

First, please tell our members what you rode.

Tim Griffin: My first motorcycle was a minibike. In the 1970s, I got a Honda 250, Since then, I’ve had approximately 15 motorcycles: street, dirt and dual-purpose. l’m always in the market for a new motorcycle.   I raced motocross in the early 1980s, during the days of [Motorcycle Hall of Famers] Mark Barnett and Jeff Ward. They are still my heroes today.

I currently have a 1981 Suzuki TS’100 that is identical to the one I had in junior high. I found this bike on eBay. I ride that one occasionally, but the motorcycle that I primarily use is my 2006 Suzuki two-stroke RM250 Ricky Carmichael replica. I bought it brand new, and I ride that more than anything else.

AM: What are some of your favorite rides?

TG: Mainly riding my motocross bikes on motocross tracks, although occasionally ride trails, especially on Ross Foundation property, which is just south of Hot Springs, Ark. Our state has many beautiful highways winding through the Ozarks and Ouachita mountains that are great for riding.

AM: What are the biggest issues facing motorcyclists today?

TG: The biggest issue for motorcyclists is undoubtedly the increasrng number of restrictions on riding on government lands, at both the state and federal level. In addition, we are fighting the EPA’s [Environmental Protection Agency’s] overregulation of fuel standards and DOT’s [Department of Transportation’s] encroachment into motorcycle issues that should be left to the states.

AM: What are the biggest issues in Congress facing motorcyclists in 2012?

TG: I worked for a Suzuki-Kawasaki dealership when I was in junior high, so l’ve seen the motorcycle world from the perspective of both the dealer and the rider, As such, I have a good sense of what motorcyclists are concerned about.

People like me, who enjoy riding off-road, are finding it more and more difficult to find a place to ride. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the House to improve motorcyclists’ access to public lands.

AM: How can motorcyclists get more involved with the members of their congressional delegations to influence their decisions on issues?

TG: Motorcyclists should continue to engage their members of Congress on issues of importance to the motorcycling community, They can do that by requesting meetings, writing, emailing or calling offices, and participating in activities organized by advocacy groups (your local ABATE or state organization, the AMA, or the MRF). Making sure that members of Congress are aware of the impact a federal issues may have on local motorcyclists is a powerful tool.

EDITOR OF WOMENS RIDERS NOW DISTRACTED– And to slow me down even more, Norm surprised me over the weekend with a new Cocker Spaniel puppy for my upcoming birthday.

I had put down my soul mate cocker, Charley Girl, a year ago. Have been slowly coming back to being able to accept another dog. Norm drove us to Pocatella, Idaho, six hours away to meet the breeder and surprised me with a 10-week old cocker.

Needless to say I’m now in puppy training mode – yikes! Never done this before. Requires 100% of my attention. Can only really work when she’s napping. So, I’m doing my best to stay on task here.

I’m going to relish being on “doggy mom maternity leave” and work as much as I can or have to during this puppy training phase which is only a few months.

VICTORY MOTORCYCLE PUTS THE NATION’S DEFENDERS FIRST DURING DAYTONA MILITARY PRIORITY DEMO PROGRAM– Victory Motorcycles is introducing the Victory Military Priority Demo Program to invite active members of U.S. military branches and the U.S. Coast Guard to move to the front of Victory demo lines at major summer 2012 events. The Victory Military Priority Demo Program, he said, is a simple “thank you” from the Victory Motorcycles demo team, Victory Riders and the riding community at large.

ROCKY ROBINSON–TO THE WORLD’S FASTEST MAN ON 2 WHEELS…HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

FROM THE CREW AT BIKERNET.

RIVERA PRIMO TURNS THE LIGHTS ON–  There are few things in life that are just obvious. The HedLED Headlight system is so obvious it was alarming that it hadn’t been done before. So we did it! Combining a high end halogen headlight with built in led’s for use as either turn signals (if legal in your area) or running lights is the best thing since sliced bread. And the extra bright led’s work great day or night.

The ‘Mighty Magnum’ (1116-0001) is a 9″ long bullet style with built-in visor chrome aluminum 5 3/4″ HedLED headlight and has double o-rings to keep the weather out. It comes complete with a super bright H4 halogen bulb (60 / 55w) with a 3 bar clear lens and of course our proprietary led ring for running lights or turn signals.

The “Mini Magnum” (1116-0010) is a 7″ long bullet style light with an integral external bezel.Show chrome aluminum and double o-ringed to keep water out. Includes a super bright H4 halogen bulb (60 / 55w) with Tri Bar, clear lens and Led ring for running lights or turn signals (if legal in your state).

The RFB HID (1116-0015) is a true HID (high intensity discharge) headlight. Its retro shape is way cool and adds to the beauty of any custom or stocker. It has all the advantages of the Mighty & Mini Magnum, plus the blazing brightness of a HID. And the LED’s are cleverly placed in the billet headlight bezel to give a truley ‘sanitary’ appearance.

BIKERNET TOURISM AUTHORITY–  Two old Jewish men, Sid and Al, are sitting in a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. One day Sid asks Al, “Do you know of any people of our faith born and raised in Mexico?”

Al replies, “I don’t know, let’s ask our waiter.”

When the waiter arrives, Al asks, “Are there any Mexican Jews?”

The waiter says, “I don’t know, Senor, I ask the cook.”

He returns from the kitchen a few minutes later and says, “No, Senor, the cook say no Mexican Jews.”

Al isn’t satisfied and asks, “Are you absolutely sure?”

The waiter, realizing he is dealing with ‘Gringos,’ replies, “I check once again, Senor.”

While the waiter is away, Sid says, “I find it hard to believe that there are no Jews in Mexico. Our people are scattered everywhere.

The waiter returns and says, “Senor, the head cook say there is no Mexican Jews.”

Al asks, “Are you certain? I just can’t believe there are no Mexican Jews.”

The exasperated waiter says, “Senor, I ask EVERYONE. All we have is Orange Jews, Grape Jews, Prune Jews and Tomato Jews.

UNCLE MONKEY BIKE BUILDING MANTRA–  There are few things more satisfying then building motorcycles. Bringing together inspiration, blood, sweat, tears and parts into a living-breathing machine that resonates with soul is never an easy project. Motorcycles by themselves are not complicated but there is no generic – one size fits all. There are always little things that need to be done, parts missing or simply the wrong size.

Oh, everything will fit; it just matters on how much you want to pay. And that is where bike building breaks down. You can build a motorcycle quickly or you can build a motorcycle cheaply, but you can’t build a cheap motorcycle quickly.
There are a lot of great deals out there. Finding them can be as simply as going to e-bay or hitting up the next swap meet or the classified section.

But there is time involved. Finding, shipping and receiving don’t happen in the same day. Even with swap meets you have to wait for the weekend. You have to wait for friends to rummage into the dark recesses of their garages to find that part that they are sure they have. It is a slow collection of parts over days, weeks, even months and years. And when it does come to mocking up the bike there are always little things that you forget, little things that will send you back out into the world to find them. The hunt is often the adventure.

Cheap isn’t always the way. With deadlines approaching, runs on the horizon, not being able to live without a bike between your legs brings the outflow of cash. Instead of waiting months to find the perfect vintage taillight for a song, it is coughing up the bucks at the dealership or independent shop. There’s a constant debate between the internet and the local shop. It’s tough on shop owners, who pay the rent, to have a customer pick his brain, then run back to his computer to grab an internet deal.

The shop benefit, includes the years of knowledge, that can save a careless customer thousands. They can also save time when you think you have all the parts you need and they point out the missing element or special tool need to complete the operation quickly.

So when it comes time to build a bike you have to decide. Do you want to build it cheaply or do you want to build it quickly?

-bad Uncle Monkey

BIKERNET FAMILY LESSON–  As she sat by him, he whispered, eyes full of tears, ‘You know what? You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you stayed right here. When my health started failing, you were still by my side…

You know what Martha?’

‘What dear?’ she gently asked, smiling as her heart began to fill with warmth.

‘I’m beginning to think you’re bad luck.

CELEBRATED CORVETTE COLLECTION FROM TONY PARELLA TO HEADLINE AUCTIONS AMERICA’S COLLECTOR CARS OF FORT LAUDERDALE AUCTION– More than 500 classics, exotics, hot rods, and muscle cars will roll into town for Auctions America by RM’s Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale auction, March 16-18, at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Offerings include a collection of 26 well- restored Corvettes from the esteemed Tony Parella Collection. The Corvettes represent every model year from 1953 through ’69 plus rare examples from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s that will all be offered during the three-day auction.

“Tony’s cars hold a lot of historical significance,” said Donnie Gould, president of Auctions America by RM. “His Corvettes we are offering are a part of a select group of collections that will cross our auction block, making the Fort Lauderdale event one not to be missed.”

A telecommunications business executive, Tony Parella has built several companies from the ground up. He is credited with pulling Shared Technologies Inc. out of bankruptcy and on to Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” for four consecutive years. When he wasn’t helping troubled companies, he focused his attention on his passion, collecting Corvettes and vintage motorcycles.

The highlight of his collection is a 1953 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $175,000 – $225,000), the 64th Corvette built. After debuting its new sports car at General Motors’ traveling Motorama show in January 1953, Chevrolet quickly put the fiberglass-bodied Corvette into production. The first year’s tally of 300 identical white roadsters makes any 1953 one of the rarest Corvettes in history.

The 1955 Corvette is special to auto enthusiasts because it came with Chevrolet’s first V-8 engine. Parella’s 1955 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $90,000 – $120,000) comes fitted with a proper 265-cid, 195-hp V-8 engine coupled to a Powerglide automatic transmission and is finished in the rare and desirable factory color of Harvest Gold.

Another Corvette that demands attention is the 1976 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (est. $50,000 – $70,000), which is the final Corvette to leave the assembly line wearing the Stingray name. This example has fewer than 25,000 original miles on the odometer and is highly equipped.

In addition, Parella’s Corvette collection includes:
•1954 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $80,000 – $100,000)
•1956 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $80,000 – $90,000)
•1957 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $70,000 – $90,000)
•1958 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $70,000 – $80,000)
•1959 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $60,000 – $70,000)
•1960 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $60,000 – $70,000)
•1961 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $30,000 – $40,000)
•1962 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $80,000 – $100,000)
•1963 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe Race Car (est. $60,000 – $80,000)
•1964 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $70,000 – $90,000)
•1965 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $70,000 – $90,000)
•1966 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $70,000 – $80,000)
•1967 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $120,000 – $150,000)
•1968 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (est. $50,000 – $70,000)
•1969 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (est. $30,000 – $40,000)
•1972 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (est. $30,000 – $40,000)
•1973 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (est. $25,000 – $35,000)
•1978 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (est. $30,000 – $50,000)
•1981 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (est. $20,000 – $30,000)
•1986 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (est. $25,000 – $35,000)
•1995 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (est. $30,000 – $35,000)
•1998 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (est. $25,000 – $35,000)

The Tony Parella Collection is one of six private collections that will be offered during Auctions America by RM’s Fort Lauderdale auction. Examples from additional private collections include a majestic 1933 Chrysler CL Phaeton (est. $350,000 – $400,000). This pre-war full CCCA Classic with known provenance is one of 36 Phaetons built from Chrysler’s top-of-the-line CL series and will be offered at no reserve. Another magnificent vehicle presented from a private collection is a 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Convertible (est. $50,000 – $70,000). Introduced for 1936, the Lincoln Zephyr was intended to be a lower-price luxury car to bring more people into the Lincoln fold.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale auction. To witness the sale of these and other one-of-a-kind collectibles, visitors can purchase an event pass beginning on Thursday for $50 or a single-day pass for $20. Children under 12 years of age receive free admission when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Due to the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center’s location and new Federal security requirements, everyone will be required to show government-issued picture identification, such as a passport or driver’s license.

BIKERNET WORKING WITH MOTION PRO ON TECH SERIES–One of the toughest items to order for a custom build is throttle and clutch cables. There is a bunch to consider and we are working with Joe at Motion Pro to develop a series for the Biker’s Choice group. Here’s the lastest.

Just wanted to let you know I have my graphics department working on some images for the project, we have pictures of old and new Mikuni HSR carbs and the HS-40 and the S&S super E with the short and tall bracket. I have them high lighting areas of interest on the carb to allow people to see what we are referring to in the text and hope to see these images back shorty.

As soon as we have these completed I’ll be forwarding them along to you and have the throttle assemblies images done shortly after that.

THE QR Code – Revealed FROM BUTLET MAPS–QR (Quick Response) codes are small printed images that allow users to instantly access content on the internet using a free app downloadable on their smart phone. While the printed code itself never changes, the content behind is constantly updated.
“Many people see paper maps as a thing of the past, but we see them as a staple to any road trip. QR codes are the perfect way to keep the reliability of a map yet gain the real time information that only the internet can provide. The great thing about QR is it can all be reached for free, from the side of the road,” says Justin Bradshaw of Butler Maps.

Butler Maps latest edition, the Texas Hill Country, has 33 unique codes printed throughout the map. Each code has its own function including linking users to video of roads, lists of BBQ joints, places to sleep and even a calendar of live music in the area. “This is way more then a map, we call it a Mobile Tour Guide, it really is everything you need to have the best ride possible. Of course, we will always focus on the best rides, but after all there is much more to a great day of motorcycling then just the roads “says Bradshaw.

Butler Motorcycle Maps currently has editions for many of the western states and can be found at over 250 dealers nationwide. The waterproof and tear resistant maps retail for $14.95.

JESSE JAMES HAS BANDIT FIRED FROM HEAVY DUTY MAGAZINE– He complained to the publisher of Heavy Duty Magazine, in Australia, when I didn’t vote for him during the big American Chopper Build off in Vegas a couple of months ago. A year ago Heavy Duty came to me to fill in for Jesse, since he was acting up, so I started to write a column for the largest Harley mag in Australia.

But now I’ve been fired, because of Jesse’s conversation with the publisher. We are investigating it further, and will bring you additional reports. The publisher is currently out of town, but Jesse bragged to a local biker, “I got him fired.”

The controversy continues. Don’t miss the Sunday Post.

FROM THE BIKERNET FAMILY COUNSELING ARCHIVES–A woman was having a passionate affair with an Irish inspector from a pest-control company. One afternoon they were carrying on in the bedroom together when her husband arrived home unexpectedly.

‘Quick,’ said the woman to the lover, ‘into the closet!’ and she pushed him in the closet, stark naked.

The husband, however, became suspicious and after a search of the bedroom discovered the man in the closet.

‘Who are you?’ he asked him.

‘I’m an inspector from Bugs-B-Gone,’ said the exterminator.

‘What are you doing in there?’ the husband asked.

‘I’m investigating a complaint about an infestation of moths,’ the man replied.

‘And where are your clothes?’ asked the husband.
The man looked down at himself and said, ‘those little bastards!.’

FOR BMW AND YAMAHA RIDERS, AN OPPORTUNITY–I work at a marketing firm, where we pay people to be part of the “9 out of 10 people say…..” on model cars and bikes that create the models of the new year, so right now 2013, and we just landed a BMW client and a Yamaha client.

If you know anyone who rides/owns a 2008-2012 BMW S1000rr there is a set group of selected bikers to go to irvine for a filmed focus group to talk about the likes and dislikes about their bike and we pay them $200.00 dollars for only 2 hours of their time.

For the Yamaha, if anyone you know owns a Yamaha YZF450 2008-2012 can do an at home study which means they do not even have to go anywhere, Yamaha goes to them and asks them what should be changed for the 2013 model and that too gets paid $200.00 for 2 hours.

Anyway, I thought you or your friends might want to grab this before we fill it up. Let me know.  randijohnson01@aol.com

DON’T PANIC, A CAR REPORT–Are more service customers migrating to aftermarket shops? DMEautomotive (DMEa) has just released a comprehensive study of the $215 billion U.S. automobile service market.

The Changing Service Loyalty Landscape reportedly is the first-ever analysis of consumer service loyalty rates at auto dealerships, independent stores and aftermarket chains. And it’s worthwhile reading for anyone running a retail or service business in the powersports market.

The basic finding is this: older drivers still like to go to their dealership to have service done on their cars, but younger drivers prefer to take their cars to aftermarket chains, and much sooner than expected.

The report goes so far to say that the auto dealership service center is becoming a “senior center” as younger consumer segments gravitate toward aftermarket chains. The report provides fresh evidence that the age of the U.S. vehicle fleet significantly benefits independent stores and aftermarket chains over franchised dealerships.

The findings will have a dramatic effect on powersports service departments.

What this all means, is that a lot of (older) service department customers are going to exit the market soon, and they won’t be replaced by younger clientele.

RIDE A PIECE OF RECENT HISTORY– Win this 2012 Indian Chief Classic! Over the past ten years, 10 lucky National Motorcycle Museum supporters have won classic-styled American motorcycles from the National Motorcycle Museum. The one thing the winners have in common is making a small donation to the Museum for a chance to win.

The machine you can donate to win this year is a 2012 Indian Chief Classic graciously donated by the new Indian Motorcycle Company. That’s right. As you may have been reading, Indian is back, and stronger than ever as a part of the powerhouse Polaris Industries, Incorporated. You can win this bike, serial number 24 of a special run of 110 machines commemorating 110 years since Indian went into full production in Springfield, Massachusetts.

“Besides being a great ride, this bike is probably already a collectible; it’s #24 of 110 specially built 2012 Chiefs that have a special numbered badge, a cool fender light sculpture for your desk, a certificate and classy key fob,” says Museum President, John Parham.”It’s one of the first off the new assembly line in Spirit lake, Iowa.”

The bike has definitely got the look, but underneath the chrome and Indian Red sheet metal (no plastic that we can find!) is a 105 cubic inch PowerPlus V-Twin, a six speed transmission, electronic ignition and digital fuel injection. Wheels are chrome with stainless spokes and the solo saddle is real leather. It’s a premium motorcycle; 21st Century technology with that classic Indian motorcycle style.

A very important part of the National Motorcycle Museum’s fundraising program is its annual motorcycle giveaway. By making a $5.00 donation for a chance to win, (six chances for $25) you also help support the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa.

Go to www.nationalmcmuseum.org to see more pictures of the Indian and donate to win. There’s also an on-line tour of the Museum you will be supporting.

BIKERNET 5-BALL RACING WHEELER REPORT–What a roller coaster ride the past week has been.

Bikernet’s ever faithful watchdogs pulled an early morning vanishing act that would have made Houdini proud. Cash returned after a walk-about and Tank was discovered wondering in a dark alley behind the local tavern with a trace of booze on his breathe, sly dog.

Hot, cold, windy with mixed rain the past few days, today a balmy 76 degrees outside of the Bikernet headquarters that’s located next to the newest, freshly paved, quietest street in town. Looks like a drag strip to me and the weekends are as quiet as a mouse pissin’ on a cotton ball in the dead of night.

96-inch Progress
The Samson pipes came out of the box and were a perfect fit and finish. Since were running a fuel injection engine Ron installed the blacked out Samson’s for mock up purposes and marked the correct locations for a set of bungs that will hold the oxygen sensors that relay information to the Daytona Twin Tec computer. Kerry at Puccio Welding handled the welding job to perfection, as always.

VIRGINIA LAW HALTS MOTORCYCLE CHECKPOINTS– In a victory for motorcyclists, Virginia is the latest state to bar motorcycle-only checkpoints, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

On Feb. 28, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell signed into law H.B. 187, which was introduced by Delegate C. Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah). The new law, which takes effect July 1, prohibits law enforcement agencies from establishing checkpoints where the only vehicles subject to inspection are motorcycles.

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/2/12419/Motorcycle-Article/Virginia-Law-Halts-Motorcycle-Checkpoints.aspx

The measure was introduced after the Arlington County Police Department set up a motorcycle-only checkpoint during the Rolling Thunder ride on May 28, 2011, that brings awareness to prisoner of war/missing in action (POW/MIA) issues.

Similar laws have been enacted in New Hampshire and North Carolina.

“Officials say they set up these motorcycle-only checkpoints to pull over motorcyclists to check for safety violations,” said Rick Podliska, a Virginia resident and AMA deputy director of government relations. “But if officials are really concerned about motorcyclists’ safety, then they need to stop discriminating against us with these checkpoints and start supporting programs that prevent motorcycle crashes, such as rider safety training and driver awareness programs.”

The AMA opposes motorcycle-only checkpoints and has been tracking the discriminatory practice since it first appeared in New York several years ago.

ERIE HARLEY-DAVIDSON RELOCATION– Erie Harley-Davidson is planning to move to a new, larger site, owners Kelly and Susan Lapping announced Saturday.

The couple had been searching for some time for a bigger site, and will move the store to a former Quality Markets building, also in Millcreek Township, Penn., this summer.

The 58,000 sq. ft. facility more than doubles the size of their current dealership, Kelly Lapping told the Erie Times-News. The renovation before the move is expected to cost about $2 million.

The couple plans to close on the building’s sale in late March, with construction scheduled to begin in April. The Lappings hope to open the new facility in July for Erie’s annual Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally.

“It’s an ambitious schedule, and we’re really excited about it,” Susan Lapping told the newspaper. “It’s great to see that the community support is just amazing and how many people are really excited about this move.”

The new facility will include a classroom with an outdoor training course for the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program; a meeting room for the local HOG chapter, a customer lounge and a 13,000-square-foot storage area where customers can keep powersports vehicles during the off-season. Kelly Lapping says plans also include more than 13,000 square feet for a restaurant and retail businesses, which will be leased through Passport Realty, of Erie.

Spring Fling 2012

The biggest party of the year is coming. Spring Fling 2012 starts March 30th and runs through April 1st. Don’t be a fool, this party is so big it takes three days. Three days of bikes, babes, beer, and live music. So come on out and have fun.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT–It’s one of those days. Everything is ramping up. The new sites are beginning to click. The Bikernet Blog is growing, thanks to Ben. Our Bonneville effort will kick off in the next couple of days, and our Sturgis program will start to fill up after Daytona. Bikes are flying together, and we’re even working on a deck alongside our building.

I almost bought a ’51 Ford. What the hell was I thinking? I don’t have the money, the time, or the space for another project. Besides, I’m a biker. I thought about my up-coming BD, getting old, and saying, “Fuck it. If you want it, buy it.”

I musta bumped my head and reality resurfaced. I’ll hold off, stay focused on the projects at hand, and keep moving forward. My grandson is now helping around the shop, and we are moving on his XS build, with a recent shipment of Mr. Lucky parts.

I’ve never been a teacher, and it’s interesting working with an inexperienced 18-year-old. I’m going to teach him electrical systems, mechanics, welding, etc. Hell, in some cases I’ll be forced to teach myself as well and Franky. It’s one thing to bang around the shop, but another to show a youngster the ropes. Gotta be more careful.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
