A LETTER FROM THE BIKERNET ACCREDITED MONK, YALE–
Good morning, Keith,
I hope everything’s running smoothly on your end. I’m wrapping up my new bagger build and a redesign of Shovelhead, (that has a 101-inch engine that I built back in 1975)—these projects demand every ounce of persistence.

This is me and the finished project back in the ’70s, Dan Roche extended the springer with 40 Ford radius rods, fun times. And my new bagger big inch, dropped the seating area in the frame 3.5 inches, 1983 modified tour glide fairing.

Before I learned to harness my ADHD (finally, at 68!), persistence felt more like an obstacle than an ally. Stay tuned—I’ll share soon how that shifted from adversity to advantage.
Your suggestion to write about persistence is perfect. May I credit you as the one who sparked today’s theme?
I’m off to babysit my grandson now, but I’ll have the piece posted within a few hours.
Namaste’
Ride safe,
–Yale

BIKERNET BOOK OF THE WEEK CLUB–
Bud & Me: The True Cross-Country Adventures of the Abernathy Boys Hardcover – April 1, 1998 by Alta Abernathy
Bud & Me is one of the 20th Century’s most exciting true stories of courage and adventure. The year is 1905. The new century is still in its infancy. Automobiles are little more than rich men’s toys and many short-sighted people feel that everything that can be invented has been invented!
In the early 1900s there are only 150 miles of paved road in the entire country. Fifty percent of Americans live and work on farms. Radios and refrigerators are still years away. Women are not allowed to vote yet and Teddy Roosevelt is in office. Against this background come two adverturesome boys, Temple and Bud Abernathy. Raised by their widowed father, “Catch-’em-Alive” Jack Abernathy, known as the man from Oklahoma who catches wolves with his hands . . . the boys, ages 5 and 9, set out on a series of daring rides across America.
First adventure included alone on horseback from Frederick, Oklahoma to Sante Fe, New Mexico and back. Then to New York City, alone on horseback to meet their friend “Teddy” and back to Oklahoma driving their own “Brush” automobile.
Their longest ride and again alone and on horseback, takes place in 1911, when two New York promoters challenge the boys to ride from Coney Island to San Francisco in 60 days time. The boys are allowed only one change of horses and they cannot sleep or eat under roof during the entire trip or they forfeit the $10,000 prize money! It is hard to comprehend how different the country is today from just 90 years ago!
The story is captivating and an important piece of Americana and rare that it can be shared by an entire family!

BAD LEGISLATION OF THE WEEK–
“Reduce the Need for Personal Vehicles”: Top Massachusetts Democrat Wants to Limit How Many Miles Residents Can Drive or Drive at All, Because ‘Climate Change’
by Kristinn Taylor
Massachusetts Senate Majority Leader Cynthia Stone Creem (D) introduced a bill this year to create a commission with the goal of reducing the number of miles driven by residents in their cars because of ‘climate change’, with an ultimate goal to “reduce the need for personal vehicles.”
The 82-year-old Creem wants the state government to promulgate regulations that could fine residents for driving too much and force them into riding public transportation, using bikes paths and walking.
Excerpts from Bill S. 2246:
(b) No metropolitan planning organization shall approve a Regional Transportation Plan or Transportation Improvement Program developed pursuant to 23 CFR Part 450, and the department shall not approve a Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, unless the plan or program, including any mitigation measures interlinked to individual projects within the plan or program, provides a reasonable pathway to compliance with the greenhouse gas emissions sublimits for the transportation set pursuant to section 3A of chapter 21N and to the statewide vehicles miles traveled reduction goals established by the secretary pursuant to section 81 of this chapter.
(f) The department may promulgate rules or regulations for the implementation of this section.
Section 81. (a) To relieve traffic congestion, improve air quality, and promote compliance with the greenhouse gas emissions limits established pursuant to chapter 21N, the secretary shall, in consultation with the secretary of economic development, the secretary of energy and environmental affairs, and the secretary of housing and livable communities, set a statewide vehicle miles traveled reduction goal for the year 2030 and for every fifth year thereafter. The vehicle miles traveled reduction goals shall be incorporated into: (i) the greenhouse gas emissions sublimits for the transportation sector set pursuant to subsection (b) of section 3A of chapter 21N; and (ii) the roadmap plans published pursuant to subsection (b) of section 3 of said chapter 21N.
The council shall assess and report on strategies and plans necessary to reduce statewide vehicles miles traveled through the establishment of an equitable, interconnected, accessible and reliable network of non-personal vehicle transportation options and through land use policies that reduce the need for personal vehicles. The plan shall facilitate: (i) compliance with the greenhouse gas emissions limits and sublimits set pursuant to chapter 21N of the General Laws, with emphasis on compliance with the emissions limits and sublimits set for 2030; (ii) attainment of the numerical benchmarks for vehicle miles traveled set pursuant to section 81 of chapter 6C; (iii) the development of compact, walkable neighborhoods; and (iv) advancement of access to, and affordability of, non-personal vehicle transportation options.
The assessment shall include, but not be limited to: (i) the present condition of, and future needs for, non-personal vehicle transportation infrastructure and services, including, but not limited to, bicycle paths and lanes; bicycle sharing stations; pedestrian paths; bus, ferry, subway, and train services; transportation demand management programs; and microtransit programs ; (ii) the present status of, and future needs for, land use policies that reduce the need for personal vehicles; (iii) suggestions for optimal locations for new, expanded or improved non-personal vehicle transportation options in urban, suburban and rural areas including, but not limited to, low-income and moderate-income communities; (iv) discussion of programs and policies that may incentivize residents to adopt non-personal vehicle transportation options; (v) discussion of present and projected future costs and methods of financing those costs; (viii) recommendations to assist local governmental and private sector officials in expanding access to non-personal vehicle transportation options and in planning and developing compact, walkable neighborhoods; and (ix) identification and discussion of current policies and recommendations for policies, laws and regulatory actions that may facilitate reductions in vehicle miles traveled.
Sen. Michael Barrett, the Senate co-chair of the TUE (Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy) Committee, raised with supporters of Creem’s bill the question of “whether we’re layering too many slightly disparate initiatives, one on top of another, in a way that is, in fact, going to complicate rather than clarify steps that need to be taken.”
Barrett pointed to transportation sector emission sublimits that are supposed to ratchet down over the coming decade and requirements for the MBTA to transition its bus fleet to be zero-emitting as examples that “we do have a lot of provisions right now, enacted in either 2021-2022 or 2024, that correlate transportation spending and climate goals.”
The Lexington Democrat also noted what he called “an unintended and subtle bias against rural Massachusetts,” where transit options are far more limited and people often live further from their workplaces.
“I understand that one can easily imagine that EVs, over time, will reduce the number of polluting vehicle miles traveled. But why we would want to start to pressure Massachusetts to reduce all miles traveled, polluting and non-polluting alike, does raise the question of what someone is to do in a place where one has to travel a long distance to a construction job or to any other source of employment,” Barrett said.

MARKET EXPANSION INITIATIVE–Ride With Us Event with Comoto Draws More Than 160 Participants
Ride With Us, the industry’s market expansion initiative, set a new benchmark for weekend Moto Intro activations during a recent two-day event at Cycle Gear in Lawrenceville, Georgia. More than 160 participants geared up and took their first ride under the guidance of Motorcycle Safety Foundation-certified coaches, marking one of the highest turnouts to date. The event underscored the growing demand for approachable, beginner-friendly pathways into motorcycling.
The activation is part of a broader partnership between Ride With Us and Comoto, the parent company of Cycle Gear, RevZilla, J&P Cycles, and REVER. Through co-hosted events, in-store promotions, and digital content, the partnership is designed to help new riders overcome barriers to entry and connect with the tools, training, and communities that support a lifelong riding journey.
The event drew consistent interest throughout the weekend, with participant slots filling quickly each morning and a steady flow of riders engaging with coaches throughout the day. Many attendees remained on-site until their turn, spending time in the store, watching others ride, or speaking with staff about next steps.
The crowd reflected a mix of ages and backgrounds, with 60 percent identifying as male, 40 percent as female, and an average age of 29. Early reports suggest strong interest in continuing the journey, with several attendees signing up for formal rider training.
On-site coaching was provided by the Alpharetta-based Motorcycle Safety Foundation campus. The team worked across both days to keep the experience running smoothly and ensure each participant was supported throughout the process.
“Events like this show what’s possible when industry partners come together with a shared goal of welcoming new riders,” said Cinnamon Kernes, MIC Vice President of Market Expansion. “We saw real interest, real participation, and a level of energy that speaks to both the power of the experience and the dedication of everyone who helped make it happen.”

A New Era for American Science: The Gold Standard is Back
by Charles Rotter
On May 23, 2025, President Donald J. Trump signed a landmark executive order: Restoring Gold Standard Science. This order marks a major turning point in how scientific information is produced, evaluated, and applied across the federal government. It sets a clear and uncompromising standard—scientific integrity is no longer optional. It is foundational.
Rebuilding Trust in Science
Over the last couple of decades, but especially the last five years, confidence in science has plummeted. High-profile instances of data falsification, politicized health guidance, and misuse of worst-case climate scenarios have damaged public faith in government-led science. This executive order directly addresses those failures.
By mandating transparency, objectivity, and rigorous peer review, the order seeks to rebuild trust in the scientific process. It ensures that federally funded research and scientific information used in policy decisions must be credible, reproducible, and subject to open scrutiny.
Key Reforms Introduced
The executive order introduces sweeping reforms that demand excellence and accountability in federal science:
- Restoration of Scientific Integrity Policies from the first Trump administration.
- Mandatory public access to influential scientific data, models, and source code.
- Transparent communication of assumptions, uncertainties, and error margins.
- Rejection of worst-case-only modeling scenarios such as RCP 8.5, unless legally required.
- A “weight of scientific evidence” standard to evaluate findings across disciplines.
- Protection for dissenting viewpoints and safeguards against ideological interference.
- Internal oversight through senior appointees to address violations and uphold standards.
These provisions aim to ensure that science used by agencies is not only high-quality but also faithfully represents reality without distortion or political manipulation.
The executive order makes clear that the purpose of government science is to serve the public good—not to justify predetermined conclusions or political goals. It revokes previous directives that elevated ideology over evidence and re-establishes a framework where:
- Hypotheses must be falsifiable.
- Scientific models must be explainable and transparent.
- Peer review must be unbiased and independent.
- Negative results are considered valuable, not suppressed.
This is a return to foundational scientific principles—those that foster discovery, innovation, and trust.
The issuance of this executive order signals a new chapter for American science—one grounded in accountability, transparency, and excellence. It is a strong affirmation that public institutions must earn the public’s trust by holding themselves to the highest standards.
With this action, the United States reasserts itself as a leader not just in scientific capability, but in scientific integrity. The Gold Standard is more than a label. It is now the law.

OTB Racing Signs Rising Star Declan Bender to Mission AFT SuperTwins Lineup as Brandon Price Steps Away
Declan Bender lines up earlier this season as an AFT Singles presented by KICKER rider [Photo: American Flat Track/Kristen Lassen]
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 28, 2025) – OTB Racing is making a bold mid‑season move to keep its championship charge alive in the 2025 Progressive American Flat Track season, announcing today that Declan Bender will climb aboard the team’s Yamaha MT-07 for the remainder of the Mission AFT SuperTwins campaign.
The 23‑year‑old Bender – 2023 AFT Singles presented by KICKER Rookie of the Year and ninth‑place finisher in last year’s premier‑class standings – steps in for Brandon Price, who has been medically sidelined following a pair of heavy crashes at Daytona and Ventura.
“This isn’t what anyone wanted to hear,” stated Brandon Price on his social media channels. “With the crashes I’ve compiled over the years I’m no longer eligible to race motorcycles. All things considered, I still had a pretty good run in the sport – four SuperTwins podiums, four AFT Singles wins and a runner‑up in the Singles championship. I didn’t achieve any of this alone. Thanks to my family, friends, sponsors, fans and everyone who supported me throughout my career.”
OTB Team Owner Wayne Sody acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the change—but says the squad is ready to rally, “Losing your rider a third of the way into the season is tough, and we’re sending Brandon nothing but love and respect as he takes the next step in life. At the same time, we’re fired up to welcome Declan. He’s fearless, he’s hungry, and he’s already proven he can mix it up with the best in the Mission AFT SuperTwins class. Our entire crew is locked in on finishing ’25 with a flourish.”
Declan Bender echoed the sentiment, expressing his enthusiasm: “I’m beyond excited to get brought on board with OTB Racing for the rest of the 2025 season. Wayne, Meg, Wyatt and Mike have an amazing program put together that I feel I can take us to the top of the box. I look forward to seeing what we can do the rest of the season!”
A Deeper Bench in the Paddock
In a further boost, respected technician Mike Luczak has joined OTB as Crew Chief, pairing with long‑time lead mechanic Wyatt Neal to form one of the sharpest wrenching duos on pit lane.
“These moves represent a new chapter for OTB,” Team Owner, Wayne Sody continues. “Mike and Wyatt are two of the sharpest minds in the paddock, and with Declan on the bike, we’re confident in our ability to make a strong push through the second half of the season.”
Partners That Keep OTB Rolling
OTB Racing’s 2025 effort is fueled by an all‑star roster of partners: Memphis Shades, Corbin, Vinson Construction, Luczak Racing, Glen’s Auto, Michael Sponseller, Yamaha Blu Cru, Lisa Niner, Fredericktown Yamaha, Rausch Racing, Lowery Racing, Motion Pro, Small Town Lids, R‑Nyne Designs, Vortex Brewing Co, Vortex Racing, Earlbeck Gases, Arctic Circle, BCTRA, LP3 Refuse Removal and Black Hills Powersports.

THE 5-BALL WEEKLY NEWS–
Since we need to have the Emporium up and running next week, I’m making a list:

I’m ordering glass tubes for the bathroom. I’m getting the missing pieces back from Dorian. I will finish it the medicine cabinet.
I spoke to Darrell. He can help Thursday and Friday. I discussed painting the backs of the bookshelves in the kitchenette so we can install the refrigerator, hopefully Friday.
I discussed the pantry area in the Kitchen are where the stairs are to the basement, and we kicked around finding an antique cupboard to slip in there and be enclosed. We need to write down and carry the dimensions to the restore store.

He’s going to work on a transition into the bathroom floor. I keep kicking it.
I agree about the window. It needs something. Let’s fix it.
If you can point and dust off the art for the bathroom, I will hang it.
Darrel wants to discuss the Microwave shelf with the Redhead. We will install on Thursday or Friday.

I brought in some stuff from the house and from Don Whalen. We will kick around. Some antique motorcycle docs.
I brought the plants down and watered them twice.
I think we have some liquid sandpaper at the emporium. I need some.
I want to paint the PVC vent pipes in the bathroom. I’m looking into the paint and will quiz ACE. There’s a Camouflage paint from Rust-Oleum.

I spoke to Darrel about Kitchen trim pieces. He said the Redhead decided against it, so cupboards are done except for the Microwave shelf.

INTERMOT 2025: Leading trade fair for the motorbike industry returns with a fresh concept
Focus on community, innovation and young target group
From 4 to 7 December 2025, INTERMOT will once again open its doors in Cologne after its dynamic relaunch and bring the passion for motorcycling back into the spotlight – emotional, inspiring and in tune with the times. With a fresh concept, a clear focus and innovative approaches, INTERMOT makes it clear why it is the leading trade fair for the motorbike industry in Germany.
In future, the event will manifest this claim in the slogan ‘INTERMOT – the trade fair. Experience motorbikes in a new way’ and will thus position itself as a central platform for direct dialogue between industry, trade, trade visitors and the community. Building on last year’s results, its objective for 2025 is to show what the community expects from it in an even more intensive and diverse way: new models, current trends, modern technologies and forward-looking impulses. At the same time, INTERMOT 2025 is focussing on genuine experiences, community spirit and creative exchange – both online and offline.
Well-known manufacturers already registered
Brands such as BMW Motorrad, HONDA, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Royal Enfield have already confirmed their participation. The world of accessories is also represented with companies such as Bering, Nolan, Shark, Segura, Wilbers, SW-Motech and Wunderlich are represented in high calibre. ‘The strong response so early in the year shows that INTERMOT is back is back – and in full force. As a trade fair hotspot, Cologne offers a unique unique environment with an enormous reach beyond the country’s borders,’ says Alexander Wolff, Director of INTERMOT.
clear signal to young target groups too
INTERMOT offers the entire biker community not only the most comprehensive overview of all new models and product innovations from the exhibiting manufacturers, but also a unique live experience. This year, the ‘new’ INTERMOT will also send a clear signal in the direction of young target groups and urban mobility: Whether 125cc bikes, scooters or smart mobility solutions – INTERMOT shows how modern, diverse and future-proof the motorbike world is. To this end, the trade fair will consistently develop its successful creator marketing approach. Influencers, content creators and digital opinion leaders play a central role in inspiring new target groups, increasing reach and retaining the community in the long term. The trade fair will become a stage for new formats, narrative styles and authentic content – directly from the scene, for the scene.
INTERMOT 2025 brings together everything that defines motorbike culture today – from technical expertise and lifestyle to genuine togetherness. It is a meeting place, trend barometer and world of experience all in one – and the most important industry event in the German-speaking world. Anyone looking for innovation, emotion and genuine enthusiasm will find it in Cologne.

THE BIKERNET MONK SPEAKS– Persistence & Perseverance
A couple of days ago, my friend Keith “Bandit” Ball asked me to write something on persistence and perseverance. I was truly honored. Keith was the editor of Easyriders Magazine for over 35 years, and when he was at the helm, it was the world’s best magazine covering biker culture and the Harley custom scene. I’ve been reading Keith’s words since the early 1970s.
Persistence
“Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.”
—Bill Bradley
For many years, I was tortured by ADHD. Persistence and perseverance were the two qualities I struggled with most.
That inability to follow through—the tendency to give up too soon—was a serious challenge. Unless I truly loved what I was doing, staying focused and committed was nearly impossible. Even when I did love the work, I still had trouble keeping at it consistently.
Calvin Coolidge once said:
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not—nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not—unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not—the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
That hits home for me. I know firsthand that my lack of persistence and perseverance over the years cost me dearly—millions of dollars in lost opportunities and unfinished business ventures.
Wisdom from the Buddha
The Buddha spoke often about the power of steady, consistent effort:
“The Tathagata [Buddha] can but point the way; your responsibility is to bring perseverance to fulfillment.”
His teachings remind us that while guidance and inspiration matter, the work still has to be done by us—step by step.
Four Tools That Helped Me Persevere
The turning point in my life didn’t come from one big moment, but from consistently applying a few simple, powerful tools. These helped me cultivate true persistence and gave me the strength to keep going—even when life felt overwhelming.
1. A Poem That Became a Lifeline
Many years ago, my wife gave me a little card with the poem Don’t Quit by Edgar Albert Guest. That card stayed with me—and so did the message. During some of my darkest moments, I would read it over and over. The words reminded me not to give up—even when things felt hopeless.

Don’t Quit
by Edgar Albert Guest
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit –
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup;
And he learned too late, when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.
That poem, and the love behind that card, helped me hold on when everything else seemed to be slipping away.
2. My Morning Questions
Another tool that helped ground me was a set of questions I ask myself each morning. They help me reflect, refocus, and reconnect with my spiritual principles and intentions:
What went well yesterday? What can I do differently?
What quality do I want to show the world today?
What glad surprises did I experience?
Did I look for the good in everything and everyone?
Who or what affected me positively—or negatively?
Did I think things through before deciding? Do I have a plan?
How am I using the Creative Process to shape the life I want?
What was the best part of yesterday?
What vision or experience do I want to hold today?
What one or more tasks will I accomplish today?
What are five (or more) things I’m grateful for?
That daily practice became my anchor—especially when I felt off track or overwhelmed.
3. Meditation
Meditation became my reset button. In a world that’s always moving, always demanding, meditation gave me a way to slow down and return to center. It helped me clear my mind, stay connected to my values, and begin each day with purpose—even if the day before had been difficult.
4. ADHD Medication – A Spiritual Breakthrough
Another major shift came when my spiritual guru encouraged me to try ADHD medication. She said, “If everything in life is fueled by the Intelligence of God, then why wouldn’t these be included too?”
At the age of 68, I decided to give it a try. The difference it made was incredible. The noise quieted, my focus sharpened, and I felt more capable than I had in years. It wasn’t a cure-all, but it gave me a head start each day—something I had never experienced before.
I now see it as another spiritual tool—one that helps me stay persistent and steady, especially when life gets chaotic.
Looking Back with Gratitude
Persistence and perseverance are two qualities I wish I had embraced earlier in life. But I’m grateful for the journey. These tools—and the people who encouraged me to use them—helped me build a beautiful life.
I’ve been blessed with:
A loving family that began 46 years ago with my amazing wife,
Nearly six decades in the motorcycle world,
Lifelong friends I’ve shared the road with for over 60 years,
And 58 years of self-employment—with all the ups and downs that come with it.
To my dear readers: if you find yourself struggling with persistence or ready to give up, I invite you to try these tools. They made all the difference in my life—and maybe they’ll help in yours too.
May your day be focused and filled with persistence and perseverance.
And so it is.
Namaste.
“To remain indifferent to the challenges we face is indefensible. If the goal is noble, whether or not it is realized within our lifetime is largely irrelevant. What we must do, therefore, is to strive and persevere and never give up.”

TRUMP MAKES AMERICA INDEPENDENT FROM CLIMATE GRIFT–
From Kevin Mooney, originally published by Daily Caller:
Donald Trump’s abrupt shift back toward an “America First” energy policy has predictably caused heads to explode as climate policies gradually give way to the free market.
Do an internet search on “Trump and endangerment finding” or “EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and endangerment finding,” or some combination of the two, and a slew of faulty scientific claims will pop up, compliments of green pressure groups and their allies in the media.
The Environmental Defense Fund, for example, claims that “our health and safety” and the “quality of our everyday lives” are at stake if the Trump administration prevails in its deregulatory efforts. Other notable contributions to the histrionics come from legal activists with the Center for Biological Diversity who accuse the Trump administration of exercising “malice toward the planet.”
Both outfits insist that the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2009 Endangerment Finding, which identified carbon dioxide as a pollutant, proceeds from sound science when it does not. The finding came about in response to the U.S. Supreme Court 2007 ruling in Massachusetts v. EPA that said the agency had the authority to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. The court ruling opened the door for President Obama’s EPA to put its climate agenda on steroids.

IT’S NEVER OVER–

Here’s a shot of Andy Hansen of H.E.S. Performance products for the early ’70s. He was one the first builders I met while I was in the service. We remained friends until he suddenly passed in the ’90s. Great guy. This was taken in Bonneville.

The Gilmore’s at Freddie Cuba’s during the races over Memorial Weekend. A major race took place and Freddie couldn’t leave it alone. He threw a party, a bike show and mini-bike races. Plus he chased the flag girl all weekend.

Here’s a shot of Freddie’s show outside the track. Not only did he encourage kids to join the min-bike races, but he’s testing out Sunday Flat Track bikes and has become a dealer.

This company may be out of business. They made these specifically for flat track racing in 125, 150 and 175cc models. They were hot property until they raised the prices.

Berry Wardlaw announced the other day that he may not make Bonneville because of the 85th Rally and some jobs on his plate. He’s now diving into 120-inch Panhead engine he build at Accurate Engineering. Looks like he’s thinking of dual carbs.
There’s just so much going on. Keep up or die trying I like to say. Hang on for next week. It’s going to be massive.
