THE PRODUCT OFFERING BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for April 30th, 2015

Hey,

Another magnificent day in Paradise and shit is hopping. Suddenly Big Bear Choppers is alive, we received a correction from Custom Cycle Engineering, and Klock Werks is always exploding with new projects. We rode over to the BDL factory yesterday, and they are cooking with new products, new footboards, new forward controls, new Softail brake systems, and of course new belts systems.

We stopped at Lifestyle Cycles to see what’s new and we were caught off guard by the Rolands Sands apparel line. It’s pricey but very cool, and made the 5-Ball line very doable. We’re learning.

Let’s hit the news. Weekly it’s sponsored in part by Cycle Source Magazine, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, and Iron Trader News.

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY–
Brooklyn Vinny was sitting in class one day. All of a sudden, he needed to go to the bathroom. He yelled out, ‘Miss Jones, I need to take a piss!’ The teacher replied, ‘Now, Vinny , that is NOT the proper word to use in this situation. The correct word you want to use is urinate. Please use the word urinate in a sentence correctly, and I will allow you to go.’

Brooklyn Vinny , thinks for a bit, and then says, ‘You’re an eight, but if you had bigger tits, you’d be a TEN!’

From “Landmarks in Printing: Diamond Sutra”:

“Hidden for centuries in a sealed-up cave in north-west China, this copy of the ‘Diamond Sutra’ is the world’s earliest complete survival of a dated printed book. It was made in AD 868. Seven strips of yellow-stained paper were printed from carved wooden blocks and pasted together to form a scroll over 5m long. Though written in Chinese, the text is one of the most important sacred works of the Buddhist faith, which was founded in India. Although not the earliest example of a printed book, it is the oldest we have bearing a date. By the time it was made, block-printing had been practised in the Far East for more than a century. The quality of the illustration at the opening of this ‘Diamond Sutra’ shows the carver of the printing blocks to have been a man of considerable experience and skill.

This scroll was found in 1907 by the archaeologist Sir Marc Aurel Stein in a walled-up cave at the ‘Caves of the Thousand Buddhas’, near Dunhuang, in North-West China. It was one of a small number of printed items among many thousands of manuscripts, comprising a library which must have been sealed up in about AD 1000. Although not the earliest example of blockprinting, it is the earliest which bears an actual date.

The colophon, at the inner end, reads: ‘Reverently [caused to be] made for universal free distribution by Wang Jie on behalf of his two parents on the 13th of the 4th moon of the 9th year of Xiantong [i.e. 11th May, AD 868]‘. “

Last Week To GEAR UP With An M1ATM Rifle–

Purchase any M1ATM Rifle before April 30th and enter your information here to receive three extra 20 round magazines for free. If you live in a restricted area, you’ll receive 10 round magazines instead. I hope you can move on this in time. It’s the 30th.

Which M1A Rifle is Right for You?

Posted by Rob Leatham

A good design lasts forever.

Just look at the the 1911, Peacemaker and Double Barreled Shotgun. When it comes to the M1A Rifle Family, I see a design that falls right into this same category.

Few .308 caliber rifles can perform as well an M1A™ rifle and non are as versatile. Whether it’s a high power rifle competition or close quarters combat (CQB), there’s one that serves any purpose. Couple that with a classic design and quality materials and you’ve got a winner.

M1A™ Rifle Variants are classified under three barrel lengths:

16 inch barrel
18 inch barrel
22 inch barrel

From there variants are comprised of different stocks, finishes, barrel weights and intended uses.

The trick is to decide which size suits you best.

Before we jump into some key differences let’s first focus on the similarities between variants.
What All M1A™’s Have In Common

Chambered for .308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge
Same receiver (EXCEPTION: M21™ uses a rear lugged receiver)
Same bolt
Same operating rod
Same magazines
With the exception of the M21™, they’re all able to fit in the same stocks.

One final common denominator is that they’re easy to operate and maintain.

From here, rifle variants start being unique based on the intended needs of the owner.

Let’s start from the shortest barrel length.
SOCOM 16 Model – 16 Inch Barrel

The SOCOM Rifle is the shortest, lightest and most compact of all the M1A™ models.

If you’re in pursuit of maximum compactness and portability, you’ll want this rifle. There are slight differences in gas systems based on barrel weights and lengths. The SOCOM uses a different gas system retainer and muzzle break allowing the length to be kept as short as possible while maintaining accuracy.

Surprisingly enough, I feel the SOCOM is the lightest kicking of any M1A™ rifle. The muzzle break really does its job by keeping the gun nice and under control during rapid fire and packs a huge punch in a small package making it an excellent choice for close range use.

This model comes with a “scout style” barrel mounted rail allowing for forward mounted optics with either an intermediate eye relief model or a non magnifying “red dot” style sight. This method of mounting allows easy access to the action on the rifle and many users prefer it due to the low mounting height.

Mount a red dot sight on this rifle and you have an easy to handle, short range power house.

SCOUT SQUAD™ Model – 18 Inch Barrel

I own a lot of M1A’s. My favorite model? The Scout Squad™ M1A™.

It’s built with an 18″ barrel and uses the same action / gas system as the full size M1A™.

As a matter of fact, with the exception of the 18″ barrel and the SOCOM’s barrel mounted rail, it is otherwise very similar to the 22″ Standard M1A™. It’s 18″ barrel maintains nearly all the power any .308 loading can develop but maintains the classic, iconic muzzle brake in a more compact package.

Cutting 4″ out of the barrel may cost me a few feet per second, but not enough to notice and doesn’t make me give up any accuracy either.

The midsize SCOUT SQUAD™ has for me that perfect blend of size and balance that just makes me want to pick it up and shoot it anytime I have one at the range.

It’s my top choice for an all-around rifle.
M1A™ Standard Model – 22 Inch Barrel

Standard_Highlander

The 22-inch barreled models are the foundation of the M1A™ line with more variants available in this length than any of the others options. From the Standard Model to the super accurate National Match and Super Match Rifles designed for long range precision competition, “full length” barrel models squeeze the most out of the powerful .308 chambering.

The Standard Model is in every way possible, visually, operationally and mechanically, a semi-auto reproduction of the US Military’s M14 rifle.

Add the loaded package to get a medium weight, match grade barrel or choose any of the stock finish options including wood or synthetic and you can have your M1A™ just how you like it.

When I want long range power and precision I will always reach for my Super Match which is the epitome of a long range iron sighted battle rifle. My first Springfield Armory rifle was an M1A™ national match model, very similar to the Super Match. I won the Soldier of Fortune 3 Gun Championship with it many, many years ago and I still have that rifle in service today!

If I want to mount a scope and really take advantage of the down range ballistics of the .308 round, I would choose our new Loaded P.A.S. (Precision Adjustable Stock). It’s adjustable stock will let me fit it perfectly to my build. Add the new 4th Gen steel scope mount and you will have a heavy duty, accurate, reliable package with time proven durability and power that no .223 / 5.56 can ever hope to match.

You can see more about that one in my Range Report on the M1A Loaded P.A.S.

BRAND New Bikernet Reader Comment!–
Bennett’s Performance Evo Engine Rebuild

I’m getting ready to fix the dreaded base gasket leak on my ‘95 superglide. I would really like to keep it basic, and maybe add a little more thump with a cam. I’m not going big, as I love the stock Evo.

What would be a good cam for a stock engine and what pistons and gaskets would you guys suggest? Love the articles.

— Rocky Price
superman28472@yahoo.com
Whiteville, NC

From Bruce at S&S–
I would recommend a VVT Top End rebuild kit that includes some super high quality gaskets, that if correctly installed, should eliminate the leaking base gasket problem The kit also includes S&S pistons for 80-inch engines. Order the kit that contains the correct oversize pistons. See the attached pdf.

As far as a cam, it depends on what Rocky is looking for. If he wants to get some more midrange grunt out of his hog I’d recommend the 508 bolt in cam. If he’s looking for more top end I’d go with the 510V bolt in cam, but I’d also recommend decking the heads about .050 t0 .060-inch because the 510V likes a little more compression. That makes it a little more work because you should check valve to piston clearances when you deck the heads.

You guys in California may not get this adrenalin rush, but spring is coming to the tundra here in Wisconsin. Let the fun begin!

LUCAS OIL NEWS– Roczen, Martin Gearing Up To Defend Lucas Pro Motocross Titles.

With 20-year-old Red Bull 450MX rider Ken Roczen and 250MX Yamaha pilot Jeremy Martin pumped and ready to battle to repeat their 2014 Lucas Pro Motocross championships, the action is guaranteed to be fast, furious and high flying when the season kicks off May 16 with the Hangtown Motocross Classic at Sacramento, CA.

Sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, the Lucas Pro Motocross Championship series has been described as “the world’s fastest outdoor motocross racers, racing aboard the best bikes each factory offers, on the roughest, toughest tracks in the world.”

And this year’s championship chase promises to be as full of thrills, spills, broken dreams and, perhaps, broken bones as the 42 before it.

“As an amateur motocross contender as a teenager, I was blown away by the agility and sheer guts the pros, mostly kids no older than me, threw down at every race,” Lucas Oil Motorcycle Division Director Mike Farabaugh says. “All these decades later, I’m still awestruck at the incredible combination of physical skills, mental discipline and split-second decision making it takes to contend for a pro series championship.”

This year, as it has in most recent seasons, the Lucas Pro Series features 24 events and a cross-country trek to 12 historic motocross venues, each with their own demonic pattern of hills, hairpins, jumps and whoopsie doodles. And no, that doesn’t mean that the series rotates to each venue twice. What it really means is that riders have to compete in two body-bashing, brain-numbing motos at each weekend event with the scores from both totaled to crown an event winner.

“The Lucas Pro Motocross Championship Series is an ultimate test of athletic ability, riding excellence and motorcycle durability,” Farabaugh noted. “Many commentators have called it the ‘survival of the fittest as well as the fastest’. That’s why we at Lucas – makers of the most advanced, ‘survivable,’ designed-specifically-for-competition-and-street motorcycles lubricants on earth — are so honored to be carrying the series sponsor banner.”

CUSTOM CYCLE ENGINEERING ORIGINALS– Finned Dishpan Rocker Covers

These Covers were “Originally” designed and manufactured by Randy Smith and CCE back in 1968. Designed to eliminate the oil seepage associated with the stock Panhead rocker box covers, these covers also imparted noise dampening and a cooler running motor. They were a great success not only because of their mechanical improvement but also because of their distinctive style.

We’ve reintroduced these to the market using the original tooling Randy designed and cast at the same foundry.

BIKERNET BOOK OF THE WEEK CLUB–
Bouncing off the redline of adrenaline addiction
Biker breaks record for fastest cross-country motorcycle ride, writes book

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – For Axe, going to a nine-to-five job and playing by the rules just wasn’t enough to feel fulfilled in life. Driving across the country on a motorcycle? That was more his speed.

“I’d seen stories of these people that cross the country in a car with spotter planes and teams to allow driver switching,” Axe said. “I wanted to do something a little more my style, so I did it on a motorcycle by myself out in the elements with just me and the machine for the ultimate adrenaline rush.”

On April 12, 2014, Axe set off on the ride of his life and ultimately set the record for the fastest cross-country motorcycle ride at just 33 hours and ten minutes.

“I’m an addict,” Axe said. “It started with whiskey and girls when I was younger, and over time it evolved into adrenaline addiction. Instead of running from death, I decided to chase it at full speed for the high. Addicts never recover; they just trade one craving for another.”

In Axe’s new book, “No Limits No Regrets: Bouncing Off the Redline of Adrenaline Addiction,” he details the real time struggles he endured as he rode his modified BMW S1000RR motorcycle from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, and the incredible feeling at the end.

“Success is a function of desire,” Axe said. “If you want something badly enough, you can do almost anything. We live in a very risk adverse society, but this is a story about taking risks and being accountable for the outcome of those risks.”

THE ERIK BUELL STORY– Documentary on EBR motorcycles coming to PBS, on-demand– When Erik Buell’s eponymous motorcycle brand was shuttered by parent company Harley-Davidson in October 2009, Buell came back a month later with EBR Racing.

In 2010, Joseph Sousa, Matt Sienkiewicz, and their camera crew began following Erik Buell and the new EBR outfit to document the rise of his new company, from the rebirth of the factory and getting former Buell workers back on the job, to the company’s fortunes on the track during its first year back in AMA racing.

Sousa and company filmed for four years, making their last trip to the company headquarters in East Troy, Wisconsin, in mid-2014. In an hour-long documentary called Ragged Edge, Buell talks about how difficult it is to find funding to get the brand going the way he wants, but he’s excited for future and the fact that two of his bikes finished sixth and seventh in the final AMA race of the season.

But no one in the video had any idea of what was coming in April 2015, and that makes the documentary’s arc – which starts with Buell’s emotional announcement in 2009 – as tragic as any fictional drama. It will air on Wisconsin Public Television on Friday, May 8 at 10:02 pm, or you can rent and it and buy it at Vimeo on Demand. It is worth a watch.

THE BIKERNET BLUES CAFÉ– Rolling Stone Premieres Jesse Lafser’s Video for “Jack Hat Blues”
Lafser to Release Sophomore Album Titled Raised On the Plains April 28

Singer-songwriter Jesse Lafser will release her
much-anticipated sophomore album, Raised On the Plains, on April 28th. Today on Rolling Stone fans of Lafser can watch her new video for “Jack Hat Blues”. The video gives reference points to the overall album vibe, which was heavily inspired by Lafser’s road travels in the Southwest, with footage of open country landscape as seen from the window of a 1966 Thunderbird (on loan from the good folks at Team Witt Customs in Madison, TN). The video was produced and edited under the direction of Strange Bird Media with additional footage from Stacie Huckeba, Elizabeth Olmstead, and Lafser herself.

When asked about the video, Lafser commented, “What I love about this video is that it chronicles snippets of my life here in East Nashville and also takes the viewer with me on the road out west… it has a montage/documentary-style feel to it that makes it unique… the video definitely suits the wild, jangly, open-range feel of the song.” Lafser called on dear friends to guest in the video including Will Kimbrough, Brian Wright, Brittany Howard, Lindsay Hayes, Sarah Holbrook and Alyssa Spyridon.

Raised On the Plains ebbs and flows with confident guitar tones punctuated by poignant lyrics- questions rise and fall throughout the album only hinting at answers. Listening to this record is much like a cross-country road trip, the lyrics like the conversations that inevitably arise as friends drive through the barren desert, seeing small signs of life in the ghost towns that dot the landscape.

Lafser was aptly named after a Thomas Hart Benton painting of a woman playing the guitar, a foreshadowing of sorts to the woman she would become. Originally from St. Louis, MO, her musical style is inspired by the blues and ragtime sounds native to the port city – Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Elizabeth Cotten, and more. There is, however, another side to her style that evokes the acoustic folk and roots music Lafser was raised on: she cites Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, Roger Miller, Kris Kristofferson, and other great songwriting icons as influences who all were inspired at one time or another by Nashville, the city she now calls home.

She is a prolific songwriter and a talented instrumentalist – her stellar finger-picking and clear voice have landed her spots sharing the stage with artists like Steve Earle, Will Kimbrough, Robert Ellis, John Fullbright, Sarah Jarosz, Bobby Bare, Jr., and many more. American Songwriter magazine said of her 2012 debut Land in Sight, “Her ability to tell a story is remarkable.”

After a conversation with Lafser about the new record, music journalist and historian,
Peter Cooper says, “When I asked Jesse, she told me she was raised in St. Louis, but later I found the truth: She was raised a couple of years ago, on a back mountain highway between Taos and Raton. She had to pull the car over. The landscape – jagged, piercing mountains juxtaposed with tall grass, startling wildflowers, and ceaseless plains – matched the sounds she wanted to create. She wrote these songs – even the one about Virginia – on that back mountain highway. She tells people she wrote them on Mansfield Street in Nashville, but that’s not true at all. The songs are true, though. You can trust them. I do.”

An album of truths, Raised On the Plains (available worldwide April 28) beautifully showcases Lafser’s hybrid blend of blues and folk, and was heavily influenced by the places she has called home and the time spent traveling to understand what home really means. The album features some of Nashville’s favorite session players – Jeremy Fetzer (Steelism, Andrew Combs), Evan Hutchings (Brandi Carlile, Sara Watkins, Escondido), Justin Moses (Ricky Skaggs, Sierra Hull), and more – as well as special guests Will Kimbrough and SHEL.

Preorder the album now to receive an early download of “Jack Hat Blues”

STAFF MEMO– The boss walked into the office one morning not knowing his zipper was down and his fly area wide open. His assistant walked up to him and said, ‘This morning when you left your house, did you close your garage door?’

The boss told her he knew he’d closed the garage door, and walked into his office puzzled by the question. As he finished his paperwork, he suddenly noticed his fly was open, and
zipped it up.

He then understood his assistant’s question about his ‘garage door.’ He headed out for a cup of coffee and paused by her desk to ask, ‘When my garage door was open, did you see my Jaguar parked in there?’

She smiled and said, ‘No, I didn’t. All I saw was an old minivan with two flat tires.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION
Washington Weekly Updates– Harry Reid has announced that he will not seek another term as Senator in 2016. Reid denies the claims that he is stepping down due to the blindness in his right eye, which is the result of either an exercise band mishap, or he was roughed up by the mob almost five months ago, depending on who you ask.

The heir apparent to the leader of the Democratic party in the Senate has arrived, and it is New York Senator Chuck Schumer. Senator Durbin (D-IL) is the most senior Democrat in the Senate, and that is usually who gets the leader spot. Durbin has stepped aside and thrown his support behind Schumer, all but ensuring that Schumer will get the leader post. Schumer is a Harvard educated lawyer from Brooklyn and has been serving in the U.S. Senate since 1998. Schumer is a bit of an enigma. He regularly changes his position on issues and policy with out warning or reason.

For instance, he is a well-known bicyclist and is often seen riding around his Park Slope Brooklyn neighborhood. However when the borough of Brooklyn wanted to install a bike path that ran in from of his house, something that one would think a bicyclist would enjoy, he and his wife successfully had the route changed to not go anywhere near his home. A real head scratcher…

He is of Jewish decent and has long been a strong supporter of Israel and their ability to arm themselves. But he has sat idly by as the Obama administration continues to marginalize concerns that Israel has with its neighboring countries.
Schumer, who generally does not have a lack of things to say about any issue, is surprisingly silent on this one.

Schumer can contribute effectively, though. In 2010 he helped usher the CALM Act into law. The Commercial Advertisement Mitigation Act required the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to make it illegal for commercials to have a louder volume than regular programing. So thanks for that, Mr. Schumer. Schumer also voted against the last attempt in the U.S. Senate to put a mandatory motorcycle helmet law in place back in 2005. So did his sitting junior Senator at the time, Hillary Clinton.

You would have had to be living in a cave for the week if you don’t know that Hilary Clinton, has officially launched her bid for the Presidency. Things are off to rough start for Hillary Rodham Clinton but don’t count her out yet. This is where HRC excels, under the microscope. It’s tough to think of a single living politician who has been under more scrutiny than Hillary, and she is still alive and kicking. This is shaping up to be a vicious campaign cycle. Like they say in the exciting world of monster truck rallies, “You have to pay for the whole seat, but you will only need the edge!”

You always hear about how some lawmakers get rich while in office, or come to office sitting on a personal fortune. What about the other end of the bench? Here is a list of the top (or bottom) ten poorest members of congress. http://blogs.rollcall.com/hill-blotter/poorest-members-of-congress-2014/

With forging policy dominating the conversation in Congress right now, there has not been much substantive transportation talk this week, which is a shame because the federal funding runs out at the end of May.

Make your plans for Bikers Inside The Beltway. It is fast approaching. 5-14-15 WDC.

BONNE BELLE ENGINE ARRIVES IN RICHMOND, VA—
“Got both– will venture into box tomorrow,” said Lee Clemens of Departure Bike Works in Richmond, VA.

Lee is referring to the secret package sent to an alternate address miles away from his shop. It was sent to a P.O.Box, which requires two keys and a security identification. The highly secure envelope contained the key to the shipping crate.

Since this engine is a one-off hand built highly modified, 45 flathead, the highest security was required. Besides, the engine is now owned by Tom Seymour, the boss of Saddlemen seats. Hang on for more reports.

New VINTAGE Bikernet Reader Comment!–
An 1939 Indian Restoration Story

I ran into the author tonight in Tacoma, Washington, at an open mic as Johnny is a fantastic piano player and vocalist. We discussed old cars and motorcycles came up and he told me about the Indian and I just read this whole article and quite frankly I’ve known him for quite a few years.

Actually five years and now I am going to make sure we spend a lot more time together as he is quite a character, as am I. And to discover I’ve known him all these years and didn’t realize he collected old cars and motorcycles especially this indian article… What an amazing writer he is. I can’t wait to see this puppy in person.

ACE CAFE LONDON LANDS IN AMERICA!
Ace Cafe Orlando Breaks Ground.

Located just off the North Circular Road in London, Ace Cafe London, with its combination of motorbikes, cars, speed and rock ´n roll, served as a beacon to English motorcyclists for decades, becoming a global cultural phenomenon. Now this same love of speed and adrenaline is coming to Orlando in the form of Ace Cafe Orlando, the first Ace ever in the United States.

“For generations, Ace Cafe has been the gathering place for those passionate about the rock ‘n’ roll culture and a love of fast-moving machinery,” explains Mark Wilsmore, owner and Co-Managing Director of Ace Cafe London. “We have been fueling the motoring community since the beginning, and are looking forward to continuing to lead the way. It was only a matter of time before we landed in the USA. With our partners Ace Cafe North America, we are here breaking ground on a great location in Orlando.”

Since 1938, the Ace Cafe has been known as the place that brings enthusiasts together, and is the birthplace of the cafe racer scene. In the early days, English bikers would race to a given point and back to the Ace before a rock ’n roll record could finish playing on the jukebox. Fast forward to Orlando in 2015 as a band of petrolheads is going full speed to bring the Ace Cafe to America.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioners, Mark Wilsmore and his partner George Tsuchnikas, and the Ace Cafe North America team, including CEO Mark McKee, and CMO Steve Glum, along with hundreds of bikes and special guests, will be in downtown Orlando on the corner of West Livingston Street and Garland Avenue on April 30th for a “Start Your Engines” British-style “Roar Up” to officially kickstart the countdown to the opening of Ace Cafe Orlando.

“We are extremely pleased to have Mark and George with us for the groundbreaking of the Ace Cafe Orlando,” adds McKee. “It’s truly a historic moment for the brand, and we’re on the fast track to get Orlando open by the end of the summer.”

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS OPEN ALWAYS, UNFORTUNATELY–
Handle every Stressful situation like a dog.
If you can’t eat it or play with it,
Pee on it and walk away.

Two sisters, one blond and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble….In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock. Upon leaving with $600, the brunette tells her sister, ‘When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I’ll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.’

The brunette arrives at the man’s ranch, inspects the bull, and decides she wants to buy it. The man tells her that he will sell it for $599, no less. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news.

She walks into the telegraph office, and says, ‘I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I’ve bought a bull for our ranch and I need her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.’ The telegraph operator explains that he’ll be glad to help her, then adds, it will cost 99 cents a word. Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette realizes, with only $1 in her purse, that she’ll only be able to send her sister one word. After a few minutes of thinking, she nods and says, ‘I want you to send her the word ‘comfortable.’

The operator shakes his head. ‘How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her just the word “COMFORTABLE”

The brunette explains, ‘My sister’s blonde. The word is big. She’ll read it very slowly… ‘com-for-da-bul.’

UNCLE MONKEY TAKES THE HEAT–
“I thought you were a Harley man.” It is a statement I’m hearing lots, now that I am building an XS11 cafe racer. It’s true that Harley’s are my favorite but they are not the only bikes I like.

Harley’s are far from perfect. In fact the closest Harley came was back in the Evo years. With the first few models of those qualifying as antiques in many jurisdictions it is time to move on. The Twin Cam is 16 years old, which puts it at an age when it should be replaced with something new any day now. With the heavy new regulations the EPA keeps throwing at us it will be interesting to see what that engine will be. If only we had been happy with 80 cid.

There are other motorcycle manufactures. Some are old like Harley, some are the new guys on the block, some are name plates that refuse to die. Limited your vision to one brand, to one model really limits what one can do. Each one has their strength, qualities that make them shine. The best CVO UltraGlide still cannot compete with a GoldWing.

The most tweaked out Sportster, V-rod, or Street will never come close to a stock Ducati or GSXR. You can put lipstick on a pig but it still is a hog. Harley has their place and they fill that void very nicely but to ignore the sing of a BMW, the snarl of a Ducati is really a shame.

Tearing across the open desert on an XR650, crossing continents on a BMW R1200GS, racing the road between coffee shops on a 40-year-old Norton, staring down at a bank of multiple carbs behind the pulling horses of an inline four on a spindly old school chopper are moments in time that will move your soul as much as leaning against your Harley at the local dive bar.

The XS11 Cafe is not meant to replace Snow White. It can’t but putting out almost as much horsepower with less weight and plates $112 per year compared to Snow White’s $200 per month I just might be throwing my leg over the cafe and putting some fun miles more often. It is a different machine, different kind of ride to fill those moments that are out there in the wind just waiting.

In the end it is as simple as you, a machine, and the wind.

NEWS ABOUT THE VA IN WISCONSIN–
I wanted to inform you personally about the follow-up steps taken since I brought Congress to Wisconsin on March 30 for a rare joint congressional field hearing to investigate problems at the Tomah VA Medical Center.

After hearing powerful testimony about deaths connected to the possible over-prescription of opioid pain medication at the Tomah VA, I left the hearing promising these next steps:

• To push reforms to strengthen transparency, accountability and disclosure with the VA and the VA Office of Inspector General.

• To introduce legislation to enhance the VA secretary’s ability to fire “bad apples” found to be negligent in the treatment of veterans.

I’m happy to report that as of today, we are making progress on both fronts.

Today, I introduced a bill to improve the ability of the Department of Veterans Affairs to discipline and dismiss doctors for poor performance or wrongdoing. It’s called the Ensuring Veteran Safety Through Accountability at the VA Act. It would expand the expedited disciplinary authority given to the VA secretary last year in the Veterans Choice, Access and Accountability Act.

We owe our veterans, the finest among us, the very best medical care. That is why the revelations of terrible failures at the VA Medical Center in Tomah — and at other VA facilities around the country — were so shocking. Our first priority must be to ensure that tragedies such as those in Tomah do not happen again.

That starts with transparency. That is why I and others are advancing legislation to ensure that reports from the VA’s watchdog, the Office of the Inspector General, are made public.

Another crucial step is to root out “bad apples.” Today, I’m introducing a bill to expand the ability of the VA to discipline or, if necessary, fire health care professionals who cannot do their jobs properly. The vast majority of the men and women caring for veterans in our VA facilities are dedicated to providing the best level of care. It is a mark of respect for their professionalism that we enable VA management to weed out those who cannot match that standard.

Even more is it a mark of respect for our veterans that we stop shielding substandard performance behind a bureaucratic tangle. This bill clears the way for appropriately prompt discipline.

I am grateful that 12 of my Senate colleagues are cosponsoring the bill and that we have the endorsement of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. I also greatly appreciate my fellow Wisconsinite, Rep. Sean Duffy, introducing a companion bill in the House. I urge the Senate to act on this matter swiftly.

I encourage any whistleblower with information about any VA to contact me at whistleblower@ronjohnson.senate.gov.

Thank you for your time,

Ron Johnson

P.S.: You can watch the entire field hearing recorded in Tomah here at the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs website or click here for more details about the testimony we heard.

WARRIOR BUILT SUPPORTED BY BDL–
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and our foundation, “Warrior Built”. My name is Nick Hamm and I am a combat wounded Marine who has served in the Marine Corps for over 19 years now. My hope is that once you learn about “Warrior Built”, its mission, purpose and objectives, you will be eager to partner with this exciting, unique and rewarding foundation.

Being an avid, lifelong motorcycle and off-road enthusiast, coupled with the mechanical knowledge to start a motorcycle project, I envisioned a way to help my fellow combat veterans and wounded warriors through vocational and recreational therapy. Constructing any type of vehicle from the ground up is very therapeutic and develops camaraderie and new support systems amongst each other while building. We came together as a team to accomplish a mission, which sparked new motivation in each combat veteran. As a combat wounded Marine working alongside my fellow wounded service members and combat veterans, the “Warrior Built” concept was born.

The mission of “Warrior Built” seeks to honor the service and sacrifice of combat veterans and wounded service members who served our country by providing vocational and recreational opportunities. Vocational and recreational opportunities break through walls and foster an environment of healing, where great memories are born and new support systems are formed.

“Built” by combat veterans for combat veterans
“Built” on our core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment
“Built” with the unrelenting drive to make a difference
“Built” remembering the Warrior Ethos we learned serving our country

The purpose of our foundation is to provide new motivation, camaraderie and to spark their imagination while most importantly offering a release to cope with similar difficulties in a positive and therapeutic way. We do this in a safe, fun and supportive environment all while providing much needed different forms of therapy.

“Building Spirits, Souls and Machines”
Objectives

Vocational therapy is conducted in our “Warrior Built Garage” where we give combat veterans the opportunity to be exposed to the world of fabrication and the mechanics of different types of vehicles. Whether it is an off-road vehicle, race car, classic car or motorcycle, we give them a chance to figure out if they want a future in the fabrication and mechanic industry.

Recreational therapy consists of attending different events that fuel the motivation and adrenalin for our combat veterans. We do this by bringing them to events such as dirt bike races, drag racing, off-road racing, concerts and planning camping trips to the sand dunes, off-road parks, rivers, lakes etc… We also help combat veterans pursue their desires to enter and compete in different types of action sports and races such as the Baja 1000 off-road race.

The camaraderie and motivation that sparks from these projects we build and the events we attend have changed the lives of the combat veterans who have given so much for our country.

JIMS SPECIAL TOOL OF THE WEEK–
JIMS No. 954 Fuel Pump Retainer Removal and Installation Tool

In order to access the fuel pump, filter, check valve, pressure regulator or fuel level sending unit on late model baggers, the cam ring retainer must be removed and replaced.

Don’t try to beat the retainer loose with a punch and hammer as it will leak or be destroyed. JIMS Fuel Pump Retainer Tool allows safe and easy removal of the top plate assembly by using a ½” ratchet to remove or install the cam ring.

JIMS No. 954 is for all 2008 to present FLH touring models.

BIKERNET FIELD REPORTER IN THE FIELD– I went to Mecum’s auction in January. Here are some cool v-twins. 1936 BSA 1000. A great bike that didn’t sell well at the time.

The red one is a Huskavarna racer from the ‘50s. Both went over 100K. The BSA didn’t sell. High bid was $120,000.

This is one of the first Crockers. I recognized a modified VL frame and transmission. Bigsby went into the guitar business after the war.

INCREDIBLE—So much going on. It’s non stop and I say that a lot. But what the hell. I need to finish the Progressive Suspension shock tech, the CV carb rebuild, and now a couple of pieces with BDL.

Wait, I’m almost done with a Cantina Episode. Peter is shooting a Triumph bike feature. And Bob Kay is flying into town tomorrow or Monday and riding the Mudflap FXR to a meeting in the desert.

I can’t wait for another report on my 2014 Indian. I’m getting close to riding it to the SmokeOut in RockingVille, NC.

Have a helluva weekend,
