In this harried world this is the week to give thanks and to think about your year and those who have helped out.

I piss and moan about the government and regulations, and I contend they don’t get the mantra, Freedom. But on the other hand America is wonderful, full of resources, friends, open roads and cool motorcycles. I should reword that. It’s not just America but the motorcycle community all over the world.

Bikers, builders, dirt bike riders and racers understand Freedom and love it. We work together, share resources, fight for freedom and struggle together. I want to thank all the Biker’s Rights members and leaders for keeping us in the game. I want to thank all the manufacturers for their efforts to share motorcycling with a younger audience.

I want to thank all our readers, all the creative builders out there, all the bike show promoters and all the custom parts manufactures who are struggling but doing what they love.

I had a meeting with Hugh King regarding another build-off series but with a twist. We are going to take a guy’s bike and alter it. No ground-ups to begin with. We are going to celebrate craftsmen all over the world. Thank you, and everyone for the love of two-wheeled freedom forever!

WACO MISTRIAL– Here’s Why Bandido Jake Will Remain a Free Man

The first trial of Christopher Jacob Carrizal has come to an end. As an expert consultant to his defense, the MPP refrained from releasing anything related to the trial in an attempt to avoid any negative impact or potential conflicts of interest. But the trial is now over and it’s time to speak the truth.

Judge Matt Johnson declared a mistrial after two days of deliberations in which the jury was hopelessly deadlocked. The President of the Dallas chapter of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club was facing three separate charges relating to events that took place at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, Texas on May 17, 2015. Carrizal was charged with directing a criminal street gang and engaging in organized criminal activity, or conspiring to engage in criminal activity, as a member of a criminal street gang, resulting in 9 murders and 18 instances of aggravated assault.

Although a new trial setting has been scheduled for April 2018, there are many factors that could impact the decision for a retrial. Regardless, based on observing the trial firsthand, there is every reason to have hope that Jake Carrizal will remain a free man. Why? Because Jake chooses courage over cowardice. And that choice makes America a better place.

The State’s Case Against Carrizal

The state’s case rested largely on two text messages sent by Carrizal to other members of the Dallas chapter, and Dallas area support clubs, in the week preceding Twin Peaks. The first text asks for all members of the red and gold (that aren’t working) to attend the COC meeting at Twin Peaks and to leave their Ol’ Ladies at home. The second text simply suggested that everyone bring their tools. The prosecution contended that these texts were sufficient to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Fortunately for Jake, the red and gold nation, and the motorcycle club community at large, a jury of 12, all citizens of Waco, disagreed and refused to convict.

BOSS OF AMERICAN IRON MAGAZINE SPEAKS OUT– Buzz Kantor Post on Facebook

Can someone explain this to me. Almost all active street motorcycle riders are at least 35 or 40 years old. And the motorcycle industry is, rightfully, concerned about attracting younger riders.

Yet a growing number of advertisers in the motorcycle industry are spending their marketing funds in digital areas frequented by younger people but not in solid, well established motorcycle magazines like American Iron Magazine with proven audience reach and credibility.

Why ignore the core audience of active and engaged riders through print but put your marketing eggs in the digital basket preferred by millenials, who are less likely to ride a motorcycle than any other generation before them?

That one’s easy Buzz. Digital advertising is much less expensive than traditional advertising and the feeling is that it’s more targeted. I don’t completely agree with that assessment, but that would be one of the reasons.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON HAS A NEW PROBLEM–
It’s bad enough that Harley-Davidson is in the midst of a two-year slide in U.S. motorcycle sales, but it may have a new headache to contend with. India-based motorcycle maker Royal Enfield is introducing a new big motorcycle to the Indian market, a move that could lead to Harley-Davidson losing its dominance overseas. It could also create headaches here at home.



A royal lineage

It’s possible you’ve never heard of Royal Enfield, or associated it only with the famed rifle of the British army, but it is today the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer located in the world’s biggest motorcycle market. It has a largely negligible presence in the U.S., and its bikes typically have small engines compared to the big bore bikes Harley produces, but it was founded in 1901, giving it a lineage older than Harley-Davidson (and as old as Indian Motorcycle), and now it looks like it wants to take on Harley-Davidson wherever it does business.

Earlier this month, Royal Enfield introduced in India its first big twin-engine motorcycle — two of them, actually — the Interceptor INT 650 and the Continental GT 650, bikes that will compete head-to-head with Harley’s Street 750.

Right now, India only accounts for around 2% of Harley-Davidson’s total sales, but it owns 60% of the big bike market there and a local player with a vastly larger distribution network could create problems.



A vastly larger rival

Royal Enfield is owned by Indian car manufacturer Eicher Motors and completely owns the mid-size 250 cc to 750 cc bike market with a 95% share. In fiscal 2017, which ended last March, it sold some 666,000 motorcycles, but wants to produce some 950,000 next year.

To put that in context, Harley-Davidson sold 260,000 bikes last year and is expected to sell at most 250,000 units worldwide this year. In fact, Royal Enfield’s sales are equivalent to the global sales of Harley-Davidson, KTM, BMW, Triumph, and Ducati — combined.

According to reports, the new Enfield motorcycles will be priced at around 300,000 rupees (about $4,600) versus the 500,000 rupees a Street 750 goes for. While that alone would make it a competitive alternative, Enfield has about 700 dealerships in India whereas Harley has just 30, meaning it would take very few Enfield sales at each of the dealerships to outstrip Harley sales.



Battle on 2 fronts

Soon, Royal Enfield may also make a play for the U.S. market. The dealer situation here is the reverse, with Harley-Davidson having around 700 dealerships and Enfield having just a few dozen in the U.S. and Canada. That said, Enfield’s bikes could strike a chord with the emerging domestic motorcycle buyer.

It’s a well-publicized fact Harley-Davidson’s core customer has become something of a dying breed. The middle-aged male just isn’t buying the same number of bikes as he used to. Instead, young, urban riders, many of whom are women, are the key demographic to motorcycle growth. Although the Street 750 (and the 500) are targeted toward this new rider, Enfield’s strength here is in the 500cc bike and at an attractive price point. Now it is introducing its new Himalayan 410cc bike aimed at those who want to ride trails and dirt tracks.

When arguing recently that Harley-Davidson should make the bold move of acquiring ATK Motorcycles, the only U.S. manufacturer of dirt bikes, I noted that it’s from this market where young riders get their first taste of motorcycling and it is they who will eventually be upgrading to the street bikes Harley sells.
 

Harley-Davidson has said it wants to cultivate young riders, and it wants to bring 2 million new riders to the Harley brand, but now with Royal Enfield entering the market, it seems to make it more imperative that the iconic bike maker move soon.

The U.S. heavyweight motorcycle market has been declining for several years now. As the industry leader, Harley-Davidson has felt the impact most. With the Indian market set to explode even further over the next few years, Harley may have a committed competitor in more places than just at home.

UNCLE MONKEY WEIGHS IN —
 

Addiction is a nasty thing. Often we feel helpless as a loved one’s life spirals out of control. We are there offering moral and financial help, put food on their plate and roof over their head. It seems like it is never enough. Our own careers hurt, our social lives hurt as we do everything we can to help the person with addiction. The reasoning is that we don’t want the guilt that we didn’t do absolutely everything, that if we had only tried harder, loved them more that we would have been able to save them. We’ve all consoled friends standing over graves as they proclaimed if only they had done more, maybe we’ve been there ourselves mourning our own loss, wonder what we could have done.

The truth is that there is nothing we can do, because we are not the addiction, we’re not the one dealing with the addiction. There is a point break where we are no longer helping, sympathizing but rather enabling, facilitating. It is only the person dealing with the addiction that can decide that they’ve had enough. Only they can decide that they are willing to do the hard work, life time of work to kick addiction and no amount of hoping and prayers by us can change that. They have to decide to get better or to die because of the addiction.

It is something that I had to deal with my brother. A life time alcoholic with mental issues he has no intentions of changing his life. Sure he’ll put in his time in rehab to satisfy the courts but once out he is drinking again, even before he made it home. It was overwhelming destructive force in my life. It reached a point where several years ago I had to sever all ties with him, to leave him to die on his own.

It is something that I have to now deal with my daughter. Addicted to meth, alcohol and pretty much anything else to get her high she has no intentions of changing. To her there is nothing wrong with her life, that most nearly thirty year olds live the same way as her. And she is right; she has surrounded herself with groups of friends who are living that way, bouncing from couch to couch, staying and partying at whoever got their parents or welfare to spring for a place to stay for a month or two before they are evicted for spending all their money on drugs. She said she was going back to school but when the student loan cheque arrived it was all spent on drugs. When she was arrested for shoplifting she convinced them that she had turned a new leaf and had gotten a job. She was fired when she didn’t show up because she went partying. Because she doesn’t want to change we are left in the conundrum. We can “do everything we can” which means letting her move in and watch as she slowly steals and pawns our belongings to support her habit while we keep praying and believing that she will be better tomorrow as she slowly kills herself. The sad truth is the woman asleep in my basement is not our daughter, not the bright eyed happy girl who had a bright future in front of her. She is just some who is using her name.

HAVE A TERRIFIC HOLIDAY—
It’s never dull around here. I’m thinking about next year hard. The Assalt Torpedo is the major goal. It needs to be on the Salt next August.

We maybe working a deal on our 5-Ball Leather Line. I would like to finish my screenplay and we are going to reprint my second book Outlaw Justice. That’s all. How’s that?

Oh, and what about this internet television series hosted by Nick and the Bikernet Headquarters.
