To move it forward, you have a lever which tensions the belt and the bike moves forward.” – Dave Currier Fargo man wins Motorcycle Cannonball with 1911 Harley Davidson A Fargo man has just won a cross country motorcycle run called The Motorcycle Cannonball. Dave Currier is finally getting some feeling back in his rear-end. He is back in Fargo after competing in the most difficult, antique endurance race in the world: The Motorcycle Cannonball. “I think this has been the toughest ride of my life,” Currier said. “It is a real grind, I had about eight hours in the saddle every day.” Riding his 1911 belt-driven Harley Davidson, Currier and 88 competitors crossed 11 states over 16-days straight. From Michigan to South Padre Island, Texas, they racked up just over 3,700 miles. “The bike is tall. I have short legs, so my feet don’t touch the ground,” Currier said. “To start it, you have to pedal to start it, it is a belt drive. To move it forward, you have a lever which tensions the belt and the bike moves forward.” But Currier, who had a team planning and tweaking this bike, not only competed; […]

All-Female British dispatch riders of WW-II Originally, the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) was formed in 1917, during WW-I. Riding on narrow British roads in all weather conditions can be a dangerous enough occupation. Doing so around the clock during WW-II with the German Blitz going on around you required steel nerves. The bikes used were mostly small, single-cylinder affairs, built specifically for military use. Triumph Motorcycles Getting Dedicated Beeline Navigation Solution

by Daniel Patrascu from https://www.autoevolution.com Carmakers have long learned that if they plan to be successful in our age and time, they must now also cater to their customers’ connectivity and navigation needs. That is why present-day cars are more gadgets on wheels than anything else. Not the same can be said about motorcycles, though. Sure, bike makers are trying to satisfy those needs too, but the limits of two-wheeled vehicles will never allow for the same level of technology as on cars to be deployed. But, again, bike makers are trying. The latest development to result from these efforts comes from Triumph, which just announced it partnered with specialist Beeline to create a dedicated navigation solution in a “Triumph-branded package.” The solution was envisioned as a minimalist proposition. The system’s case is IP67 waterproof and shockproof, can be quickly mounted on any motorcycle, not only Triumphs, and features laser-etched Triumph branding. The bike maker says the system is a perfect fit for the bikes it makes, more specifically for the Bonneville. Once installed on the two-wheeler, it needs to be paired with the Beeline app to work. The Triumph Beeline, as it’s called, comes with a back-lit display and provides two navigation modes, the turn-by-turn Route and the more adventurous Compass, which uses a compass to give directions. The display shows a speedometer, clock and trip computer, route tracking, metric and imperial information options, and GPX route import option. It can do so for up to 30 hours, after which it needs to be plugged in to charge its battery via a USB cable. According to the Brits, the system can be used on bikes riding in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. In the home market, the thing is priced at £199 ($282) and

Indian Motorcycles Now Have Apple CarPlay, Command System Gets Upgraded

by Daniel Patrascu from https://www.autoevolution.com In a very short period of time, navigation and smartphone integration systems have become very important for the auto industry. It is very hard today to find a car that doesn’t come with at least one built-in such system. In the case of motorcycles though, things are a bit more complicated. It is only now, years after the first smartphone was successfully integrated with a car, that motorcycle makers are including such amenities on their products. Harley-Davidson, for instance, only recently announced the availability of Android Auto to its 2021 bikes, a tad later after providing CarPlay support for its two-wheelers. In a bid to keep being relevent in this respect, one of Harley’s biggest rivals, Indian, announced this week it too would include Apple’s solution on some of its models starting this year. More specifically, the 2020 Chieftain, Roadmaster and Challenger models will get the system, but only when fitted with the 7-inch Ride Command system with navigation. As usual, CarPlay would allow access to features such as Apple Music, Maps, or Siri directly from the integrated screen. Together with this announcement the bike maker also said the Ride Command is getting upgraded a bit, with the integration of improved navigation location management, improved boot time, audio muting and control improvements. Also, widget fixes, a new fuel economy widget, and improved search functionality within navigation have also been included in the update. “Continuing its mission to further enhance the riding experience, this latest update continues to deliver industry-leading technology which provides riders with a way to stay connected while out on the road,” the bike maker said in a statement. “This integration also increases global accessibility to navigation.” For now, Indian did not ay whether the introduction of CarPlay would translate into an increased

Harley-Davidson Finally Adds Android Auto As Standard On 2021 Motorcycles

by Mircea Panait from https://www.autoevolution.com/ It’s been long in the making, but what did you expect from a motorcycle manufacturer as traditional as Harley-Davidson? Android Auto will finally roll out to Touring motorcycles as a software update for the Boom! Box GTS infotainment system, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. For the 2021 model year, the Trike, CVO, and Touring families with the Boom! Box GTS will feature Android Auto as standard. Google Maps, the Google Assistant, voice commands, and many more apps should make life behind the bars a little more comfortable and pleasant as well. Owners of the Boom! Box GTS can update the infotainment system with Android Auto by USB. If you were wondering, the system is available as an accessory for 2014-and-later motorcycles from the Trike, CVO, and Touring families with previous the Boom! Box 6.5GT infotainment. Designed to look similar to a tablet, the GTS features a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Corning Gorilla Glass for scratch resistance. Apple CarPlay is also supported, but iOS devices need to be complemented by a Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories headset. The GTS projects a number of phone functions onto the screen, including music streams from Spotify. Currently available in 36 countries, Android Auto’s assistant is limited to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The Google Assistant has one purpose, and that is to keep your hands on the bars and eyes on the road while using voice commands to check the weather, make a call, or change the radio station. Celebrating five years in March 2020, Android Auto rolled out in May 2015 with the Hyundai Sonata. The South Korean manufacturer offered the system free of charge as opposed to the BMW-Apple CarPlay subscription service that was eventually

Comtech builds navigation platform for Indian Motorcycle’s Ride Command System

Comtech Telecommunications has announced its Location Technologies group has teamed up with Indian Motorcycle to build a motorcycle-specific navigation platform for its Ride Command system. Customized to enhance the Indian Motorcycle experience, the built-in navigation platform is designed to provide riders with continuous connectivity. In addition to turn-by-turn directions, riders will be able to access real-time access to special routing options for locating the shortest, fastest and most scenic routes. This includes waypoint routing that enhances the rider’s overall navigation experience by adding up to 100 stops, or special points-of-interest, as well as real-time traffic and weather overlays. Comtech’s navigation platform also features Doppler weather radar information. These navigation features are coupled with maps available onboard and offboard, as riders ride through areas where cellular connectivity is limited. Using its Location Studio platform, Comtech provided navigation and mapping leveraging an open ecosystem to customize Ride Command. In addition to specialized routing, Ride Command includes an intuitive search system and can support geographical data from multiple countries and 11 different language capabilities with a plan to expand in the future.
