Brief history of Daytona Beach’s Bike Week

By General Posts

A history of beer, bikes, cole slaw and ‘rowdyism’

by C. A. Bridges from www.news-journalonline.com

Bike Week, now marking its 81st year, may not be your grandfather’s — or even your great-grandfather’s — bike rally. A gathering for motorcycle race fans, a drunken party, a biker brawl or a family vacation destination, Bike Week has been a lot of things over the years.

It’s our Mardi Gras, our Fantasy Fest, our Carnival. It’s a portable, 10-day street party of motorcycles and biker lifestyle.

Destination Daytona Biketoberfest 2020

By General Posts

The city of Daytona restricted vendor permits during Biketoberfest this year. Bummer. They attempted to shut the event down, but the riders kept coming.

A result of severe lock-down meant no vendors at the speedway, boardwalk, main street etc. Events did not happen or were moved.

But wait! Destination Daytona was open and had a good turn out Friday, the day I rode over.

IndianxWorkhorse Appaloosa Studded Motorcycle Revealed at Baikal Mile

By General Posts

by Eduard Pana from https://www.autoevolution.com

Earlier this week, Indian announced that it will participate at Baikal Mile Ice Speed Festival with the Appaloosa v2.0. The motorcycle maker only provided one photo of the racing machine, but it has now revealed more details about the collaboration and looks of the model.

The Baikal Mile Ice Festival is a drag-race focused event, in order to see which manufacturer can produce the fastest motorcycle that can run in harsh winter conditions with low temperatures and dodgy terrain.

This idea emerged from some Russians that thought if their country is not suited for tarmac racing, they managed to make a replacement of the salt lake (ahem, Bonneville Slat Flats) with an ice lake. This event had such a great success in 2019, so they decided to make an even better 2nd event with more racing and side action, like ice-drifting, motocross stunts, and many extra shows.

The IndianxWorkhorse racing team traveled a long way to reach the Baikal Lake in Russia to race at the 2nd edition of the Baikal Mile. Even Brice Hennebert, the Appaloosa creator said that “I can’t believe we are actually here. What an amazing place. I am so pleased to finally reveal the new Appaloosa after weeks of hard work to get here. I can’t wait to see Sebastien blast down the 1-mile strip.”

The qualifying runs were done on 27 February. Although problems appeared with the quick-shifter due to vibrations, they canceled the system in order to race. Also, winter studs were lost during the runs from the back wheel and destroyed the blades behind the wheel. Still, with all these mechanical problems, the team qualified for both 1/8 mile and 1 mile races.

Although the race has ended, no official results are yet available, either on the Baikal Mile official site or on the social media, but you can follow the IndianxWorkhorse trip and photos at hashtag #indianxworkhorse.

Hundreds of drunk scooter riders lost their licenses at Germany’s Oktoberfest this year

By General Posts

21 September 2019, Bavaria, Munich: “NO E-Scooter” is on a sign on the way to the Oktoberfest, next to it there are E-Scooters parked. The largest folk festival in the world lasts until 6 October.

by Zac Palmer from https://www.autoblog.com

Drinking and riding carries the same penalty as drunk driving

Oktoberfest just wrapped up in Munich, and surprisingly, there’s some pretty alarming transportation-related news coming from it. Ride-sharing scooters and drunk party-goers don’t make for a good combination, but that’s exactly what German police had to fend with throughout the 16-day-long event.

According to German news outlet Deutsche Welle, and picked up by The Drive, local police say they caught 414 people riding scooters while under the influence. Of those, 254 riders had their driver’s licenses revoked on the spot. Germany treats scooters the same as cars, so there are serious consequences for not following the rules of the road — similar to America, there are repercussions for drunk driving. What remains unreported is how many accidents or injuries occurred as a result of all the drunk scootering.

German police were on high alert when it came to the scooters, as they were just unleashed on the public in June this year. The numbers are slightly better for folks who were driving an actual car in the city of Munich during the festival. Police found 315 drunk drivers and forced 215 of those to give up their licenses immediately.

Millions from all over the globe attend Oktoberfest every year. Beer is consumed in copious amounts in massive beer glasses known as steins — the only size of beer served in the beer tents amounts to 33.8 ounces. Drinking tasty German beer and singing all day may have given some folks a little too much confidence to pilot an E-scooter home rather than walking like the rest of the crowd. Police did a great job of keeping the scooters from entering onto the Oktoberfest grounds, banning their use during the festival itself.

We’ll leave you with a few fairly obvious words of advice: Don’t drink and scoot at the same time. Traveling at the pace of a brisk jog is not worth losing your driver’s license.
