Hey,
We survived Sturgis ’17, but it was a fucking adventure, and you’ll read all about the breakdowns, the action, the roads, and we were pulling a trailer. WTF!
A motorcycle save us.
Let’s hit the news.
NEW BORDERLAND BIKER CHAPTER COMING TO BIKERNET– I sent Lisa Chapter 25 of (BORDERLAND BIKER).
I’m attaching a picture of the little 2017 Dyna Low Rider I recently got. With the upgraded 103 ci HP engine and its 160 rear tire…it loves the backroads.
I’m old, 6’1″ and have bad knees, soooo I got a H-D front peg that fits but with a wee bit more 1-inch of an extension and I removed the backrest part of the stock seat. (I may try LePera’s Daytona ‘Daddy Long Legs seat).
I also found out Biltwell’s clubman bars (in attached photo) work and look great (and I didn’t have to get new cables.
The new high exit Vance n’ Hines 2-into-1 short exhaust system is perfect. It’s reelee light weight, relatively quiet and has enough back pressure so I didn’t have to remap. (Actually the new 103 ci HP engine’s mapping is actually similar to the old Stage 1 upgrade).

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY–
Because they had no reservations at a busy restaurant, my elderly neighbor and his wife were told there would be a 45 minute wait for a table.
“Young man, we’re both 90 years old,” the husband said.
“We may not have 45 minutes.
“They were seated immediately.
The reason Politicians try so hard to get re-elected is that they would “hate” to have to make a living under the laws they have just passed.

THE NMA REPORT– The Whisper War: NMA
Editor’s Note: We’re going to play a little game: Can you guess when Jim wrote this newsletter with its references to government entities increasing ticket penalties, the ramping up of enforcement campaigns, and pronouncements of motorized traffic being responsible for all that is wrong in the world? It is the contemporaneous companion to last week’s e-newsletter (NTSB Wants to Turn Our Highways into a For-Profit Police State, #447) with some Vision Zero dogma thrown in, right? Read it first and then scroll down just past “NMA Blog Posts you might have missed this week” for the answer. No fair peeking in advance.
The newspapers and radio and TV programs runneth over with anguish over state and local governments’ budgetary shortfalls. What doesn’t make the front pages or the six pm news hour is the unofficial “Whisper War” against the population at large.
The number one priority of all governmental entities and bureaucracies is “survival.” It is imperative that the paramount essential function be maintained, collecting revenue. If the normal extraction of taxes from the populace doesn’t keep up with government demands, government must find other ways to fulfill its needs. Hence the Whisper War.
You won’t see Mayor Gambino, Senator Capone, or Council Woman Barker call a news conference announcing their decision to raise fines, intensify enforcement, reduce access to courts, or pass several new ordinances with stiff forfeitures to maintain cash flow into governmental coffers. (I hasten to add that sacrifices will be offered, for example eliminating trash collection and road maintenance, and closing the fire department.) What will happen, and is happening, is the Whisper War from the top down. “Raise the fines, step up enforcement, no tolerance or warnings, make that common practice illegal” and “let’s get some of those cameras that issue tickets.”
Just to short circuit the possibility that the public might actually resist an onslaught of tickets, fines, regulations and inspections; new procedures are instituted to divert malcontents to “administrative hearings” where real due process is extinct. All these actions are taken in the name of “protecting the children” or “making the neighborhood safer.” For good measure, there may be a reference to “rooting out terrorists.”
The biggest, most affluent, compliant, and susceptible target in the Whisper War is the American motorist. Well accustomed to pointless laws, arbitrary enforcement, rapacious fines, and a judicial system that survives by milking drivers, most motorists are conditioned to regulatory and financial exploitation. (As well they should be, given that drivers and cars and trucks are responsible for all that is wrong in the world—as evidenced every day in various public pronouncements.)
A 20 percent increase in fines because “we must enforce voluntary compliance” will be taken in stride. A new surcharge for head injury victims seems reasonable. Increasing court costs 50 percent to modernize the courthouse appears to have merit, even if it takes an act of Congress to get an actual trial. As long as some flimsy excuse is offered for the increased level of government sponsored extortion, 200 million American motorists “suck it up” and drive on.
Ever think about what would happen if they said “no, we’re not going to take it anymore?”
AIRLINES KILL PETS–
Lulu was a 5-year-old King Charles Spaniel whose family loved her very much. She tragically died when she was left in the cargo hold of a United Airlines flight during a two-hour delay.
On behalf of Lulu and all the pets, who have suffered and died in cargo holds, we must demand better pet policies. Sign the petition to demand United put safety policies in place for pets in cargo during delays!
United Airlines has one of the worst pet treatment rankings: a whopping 53 animals died on United flights from January 2012 through February 2017.
I have a little dog, who I think of as my own daughter. I can’t imagine the trauma of an unnecessary death like this. The poor family grieving Lulu’s death must be heartbroken.
Please join me in demanding justice for Lulu by ensuring no future pets meet her same end.
Thank you,
–Kelsey B.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY WILD WORD OF THE DAY—
1. a person who finds intelligence to be a sexually attractive quality in others.
adjective
1. noting or relating to such a person.
QUOTES
Of course, many people seek an intellectual connection with their partners. But people who identify as sapiosexual often say intellect is the first or most important factor that draws them to another person …
— Anna North, “The Hottest Body Part? For a Sapiosexual, It’s the Brain,” New York Times, June 2, 2017
ORIGIN
Sapiosexual is modeled on words like homosexual and metrosexual, i.e., it has a short first element that ends in “o” (two syllables for homosexual and metrosexual, three for sapiosexual). The trouble is that for some intelligent people, sapiosexual is an “incorrect” formation: the word “should be” sapientisexual or at least sapientosexual, which are correct but pedantic and unlikely to win many dates for oneself. Some people in the 19th century objected to the new-fangled word scientist because it had a Latin root (scient-) and a Greek suffix (-ist), an objection no longer made. Sapiosexual entered English in 2015.

IT ALWAYS WILL BE BY WILLY NELSON– It Always Will Be
Sometimes I think that love is somewhere
Livin’ on an island all alone
I can see it in the darkness
I can feel it in the distance and then it’s gone
And then I know that it is time
For me to go and find my favorite girl
‘Cause when I look into her eyes I see
All the love there is in all the world
And it always will be
And it always will be
And it always will be
It always will be
There are some things I think about
And every time I do it breaks my heart
And there is nothing I can do
About this loneliness I feel when we’re apart
I stop and curse the darkness and the distance
And then your face I see
And when I look into your eyes I see
All the love there is inside of me
And it always will be
And it always will be
And it always will be
It always will be
And it always will be
And it always will be
And it always will be
And it always will be
SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEKEND– With the 77th Sturgis Black Hills Motorcycle Rally already underway and 500,000 riders in attendance, now is a better time than ever for seasoned riders to refresh their safety knowledge, and for beginners to learn the basics of safe biking as they head out on their ride.
According to the National Safety Council, only 44 percent of riders pass at least one training course. That means, all of us on the road, no matter if you’re on the bike or not, need to be vigilant. Based on claims data from Farmers Insurance, collisions with other vehicles is the most common cause of motorcycle claims. These accounted for 78 percent of all motorcycle claims filed with the insurer group between 2014 and 2016. Usually it’s the fault of the motorist.
Below are some tips that Farmers Insurance recommends based on the recent Virginia Tech Transportation & Motorcycle Safety Foundation study. This high-tech study analyzed 100 riders experiencing accidents on bikes by outfitting them with video cameras and data loggers.
1. Remain cautious when approaching hills. Riding uphill doubles your chances of crashing, whereas riding downhill increases your risk four-fold.
2. Don’t look at the driver, look at their wheels. A majority of contact accidents are caused by other vehicles turning left in front of the rider’s path. Don’t assume the driver sees you when they are turning left, and pay attention to their wheels. If the wheels start rolling, you start braking.
3. Pick the right helmet. All helmets should be Department of Transportation-compliant, which riders can easily identify by looking for the DOT/Snell sticker on the inside or outside of the helmet or visiting helmetcheck.org.
Make yourself seen.
4. This is especially important when approaching curves and at intersections where accidents are most likely to occur. Avoiding blind spots, riding with your high beams on and wearing bright colors can help with this.
5. Avoid driving in the center of a lane. Cars and trucks commonly lose oil from the engine and transmissions, which are often in the center of a vehicle and thus deposit oil in the middle of lanes.

ECLIPSE DAY (August 21st) Support– While you may know me as the CEO of FeedBlitz, I’m going to let you in on a not-so-little secret: I am an avid space – and all things related to space – fanatic. A self-proclaimed space geek!
And this is precisely why I’m writing to you today. August 21, 2017 will bring a great deal of excitement here to the US, as the country experiences its first total solar eclipse since 1979. The path of totality spreads from Oregon on the west coast across the country to South Carolina in the east.
Why would this matter? Well, not only is this an opportunity to witness a truly great natural phenomenon, but also — as it happens — the FeedBlitz support team is headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, right in the heart of totality. Millions are expected to travel and converge upon the areas listed in the path of totality (yours truly being one, one of the many perks of having part of the team live in Charleston), and cities and towns across the country are preparing for an extremely high influx of visitors.
With all the excitement, there some things to worry about from a business perspective, given the sudden arrival of many, many people into some relatively small areas. Among these are very valid concerns regarding stress on retail online infrastructure. It is going to be a tough day for internet and cellular networks, especially for areas in the path of totality.
Taking these possibilities into consideration, I’ve decided to treat Monday, August 21st as a holiday, and our our offices will be closed. Like every holiday, our systems and servers will continue to service your clients, subscribers, lists and feeds; we’re not expecting any issues there.
I don’t, however, want to frustrate you by promising phone support when it’s possible that the support team won’t be able to rely on the phone network or retail internet connectivity.
We will be back and dealing with support cases on Tuesday the 22nd.
Should you have any questions, feel free to hit reply on this email and our team will be ready to respond. I’ll be back in touch later next week with a reminder of this closing as well as an update related to your newsflash audience inclusion abilities.

NUVIZ ROLLS WITH VETERANS CHARITY RIDE TO STURGIS– Motorcycle Therapy meets the latest technology for an epic ride.
NUVIZ, Inc, creators of the first all-in-one head-up display for motorcycle riders today announced they’ve offered NUVIZ units to participants in this year’s Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis, a program designed to assist veterans through throttle therapy and on-the-road counseling programs. A rotating platoon of riders from all branches of the military have ridden from Los Angeles California to Sturgis, South Dakota for the past three years, and have become a staple of the Sturgis community in short order by arriving at the legendary Black Hills Rally in a patriotic parade of respect and appreciation from the many riders in attendance.
NUVIZ devices were given to the lead and trailing rider along with other veteran riders in the pack. “The NUVIZ HUD’s were an ideal way to lead this group half way across the country,” said Robert Manciero, VCR Co-Founder and Emmy-award winning director. “Telling the story of an epic motorcycle ride and the benefits of not only riding a motorcycle, but the rewards of community, therapy and the power of leaning on each other for help is a complex endeavor. The NUVIZ devices helped us not only navigate, but communicate and tell the story through photos and POV video.”
The NUVIZ HUD incorporates many features desired by the modern touring rider including a built-in GPS, communications and media player, speed indicators and a HD camera that offers point-of-view stills and video. The rider can access the information via an intuitive wireless controller while keeping their eyes on the road ahead.
“We rode some really challenging routes and saw some truly beautiful parts of the country,” said Lisa Niner, thirty-year Army Veteran. “I worked on military application of HUD in attack helicopters in Afghanistan, and seeing this technology come to motorcycling is way cool. It’s easy to use, and just as easy to stay focused on the road at the same time.”
The Veterans Charity Ride gathers veterans who have struggled and need a helping hand, therapy and community. The ride features Indian Motorcycles, some fitted with Champion Sidecars and modified controls that allows for almost all riders to be considered for the program. Many riders suffer from PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and traumatic amputations. These conditions make for difficult re-orientation into civilian life. The VCR program is designed to meld the brother and sisterhood of American Veterans with the appreciation from the motorcycling community with a structured therapy and counseling program along the route. Additional “surprise” events include riding ORVs in Moab and a visit to Jay Leno’s garage for a personal tour with Mr. Leno.

All eyes were on the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle.
They reached the altar and the waiting groom.
The bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand.
The guests in the front pews responded with ripples of laughter.
Even the priest smiled broadly.
As her father gave her away in marriage, the bride gave him back his credit card.

MILWAUKEE BUCKS AND HARLEY-DAVIDSON ROLL FULL THROTTLE INTO NBA SEASON WITH JERSEY PATCH SPONSORSHIP– The Milwaukee Bucks and Harley-Davidson have forged a multi-year global agreement featuring Harley-Davidson’s iconic black, orange and white bar and shield logo on Bucks game jerseys beginning in the 2017-18 season.
The two globally renowned Milwaukee-based organizations made the announcement today at the Harley-Davidson Museum in downtown Milwaukee. Jersey sponsorships were approved as part of a three-year pilot program by the NBA Board of Governors in April 2016.
“It’s a perfect fit for Harley-Davidson and the Bucks, two international brands with deep Milwaukee roots, to join together through this partnership,” said Matt Pazaras, Milwaukee Bucks Senior Vice President, Business Development and Strategy. “Harley evokes as much passion among its riders as the Bucks do for our fans. And with that passion, along with its iconic logo and what it represents, Harley is the coolest brand for our players to sport during games.”
“At Harley, our goal is to grow the sport of motorcycling across the country and around the world while building the next generation of riders,” said Sean Cummings, Harley-Davidson Senior Vice President, Global Demand. “Our sponsorship with the Milwaukee Bucks not only unites two of the world’s favorite sports, it activates our brand in relevant ways to new, young adult audiences across the U.S. and around the world in over 200 countries and territories.
“We’ve been part of the fabric of this community since 1903 so it’s only natural that our brand is woven into the fabric of the Bucks jerseys.”
In addition to the jersey patch that measures 2.75 by 2.09 inches, Harley-Davidson will also be integrated into highly visible Bucks team platforms including:
The Harley-Davidson jersey patch has the potential to receive over two billion impressions annually globally across the Bucks and NBA broadcast, video and digital platforms.
Jerseys purchased at the Bucks Pro Shop will include the Harley-Davidson patch.
BRONZE STAR RECIPIENT SURPRISED WITH GIFT OF NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE
STURGIS, S.D. (August 8, 2017): At the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on “Military Appreciation Day,” Bronze Star recipient, Charles Swank, was honored with a new Harley-Davidson powered by a Milwaukee-Eight Engine. The surprise moment was part of MISSION: “THANK YOU” – a cross-country tour led by Scootin’ America’s Adam Sandoval to celebrate the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom.
Enlisting in the Army on September 11, 2001, Charles was deployed to Iraq in 2003 as an infantryman with the 82nd Airborne Division and Afghanistan in 2005. He earned a Bronze Star for helping one of his wounded comrades during a firefight. A father of five, his service ended in 2006, but he still continues to serve his community as a firefighter in Butler, Ohio.
Every American can nominate a military member – past or present – who has dedicated their life to protecting our freedom by submitting their story of sacrifice, strength and courage of service at MissionThankYou.com. A panel consisting of Adam Sandoval, Wounded Warrior Project representatives and Harley-Davidson leadership will select which seven other deserving military members will be honored with new motorcycles.
WHISKEY, WISDOM AND NEVER GIVING UP— We had a helluva time in the Badlands. I took my grandson Franky, the tattoo artist, from Art and Soul in Venice.
He got to ride through Deadwood, Sturgis, the Chip and attend the Sturgis Museum Motorcycle Hall of Fame breakfast, which is inspirational. All the greats were there.
Now the action starts at home. We will get back to work on the mural. We have features to publish, Sturgis run stories to write. We need to put shit away and chase a new pickup.
I want to thank Joe Zanelli, the owner of Rocky’s Sports Bar on Maryland Parkway in Vegas for storing my 5-Ball Factory Racer for awhile, until Las Vegas Bikefest.
Our last couple of days turned into a massive adventure and I don’t believe I will ever pull a trailer again. I’m going to buy a late model pickup or ride to the next event. But you’ll read the story in the next week or so.
Hang on and always ride free.
