SUMMER IS HERE THURSDAY NEWS FOR MAY 31, 2012

Hey,
As you know life is strange.
It gets more macabre by the second. I guess, we need to fight like hell for what we believe in and hope the rest gets the hint. I won’t even start. Try watching the movie Hemingway and Gellhorn. Amazing film from a historic prospective.

Then don’t miss the interview with Billy Lane, by Jay Allen, about the bike he built in prison for the Rolling Thunder 25th anniversary. It was displayed last weekend in Washington D.C. The interview is posted on the Bikernet homepage right now. That whole effort demonstrated a major positive human trait. There are reasonable people in powerful positions—Billy’s prison warden.

Congratulation to Jay for his efforts and for the incredible 25th Anniversary of Rolling Thunder and Ride to the Wall. I also spoke to an old friend of 25 years ago. He was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He’s 100 percent disabled, fought for his benefits, and suffered the effects of Agent Orange. He’s still in terrific spirits and returned to Vietnam a few years ago. He had nothing but positive things to say about the people.

One more tidbit: Mark Lonsdale, stops into the Bikernet Interplanetary headquarters every couple of weeks. He spent 10 years in Afghanistan training troops. He is working on another security contract with the Pentagon, currently. He was in town to train the chosen lead actor for the next Marine III movie. The actor is a WWF star, who never wrestled in high school, but was athletic and discovered in a talent contest. So they trained him for the WWF and now he’s going to star in a movie. He has never done anything real in his life, yet makes a bundle. He never shot a gun, never boxed or had a real fight. Mark is training him for the action scenes in the movie. Interesting.

Let’s hit the news:

RIDE THROUGH TIME SHOW–Last weekend I checked out the annual “Ride Through Time” show at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine. Let me tell you, it was a great show. The weather was perfect, the crowd large and the bikes awesome.

I guess that it is a sign of my age, but seeing all those bikes brought back a lot of memories. I was particularly impressed with a Brough Superior. If there was a way I could have snuck it out of there… Anyways, I am including a few shots as well as some of my shovel. I took it apart for paint and such right after the photos. The model is Emily. She is a bartender at Mardi Gras sports bar in St. Augustine. Good place to hang out with bike parking right up front where it needs to be.

Still trying to deal with the bad economy. Things got so bad that I had to get a job. Then it got worse and I got laid off. WTF. Moved to St. Augustine. Love it here.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY JOURNALISM DEPARTMENT LESSON–
ventose VEN-tohs, adjective:
Given to empty talk; windy.
Anyhow, it is better to wind up that way than to go growling out one’s existence as a ventose hypochondriac.
— Thomas Henry Huxley, Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley
The ventose orator was confounded, and put himself and his glass down together.
— L. J. Bigelow, Bench and Bar
First used in English in the 1700s, ventose is derived from the Latin word for wind, “vent.”

MIDNIGHT RIDERS ON BIKERNET BAGGERS—Our staff midnight rider flew the coop for a couple of months. You need to read this report. While he’s away, we need midnight rider reports to fill the void. BIKERNET FAMILY COUNSELING SESSION–  After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured.

Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched – with a raised eyebrow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, “This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?”

“Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish.”

5-BALL RACING HEADING TO MOJAVE MILE THIS WEEKEND— That’s right, we are crewing for the owner of a very fast production 1000 cc Kawasaki ZX10R. He is barking at the 200 mph door with extremely analytical approached to increased speed and handling, while staying in the production class. He is a single guy with only his boss, at SDS Welding as a sponsor: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003581896019. Yet, he is still barking at the door of the record held by a very well funded BMW factory team.

Let’s see what he can do this weekend at the Mojave mile at 2,800 feet of elevation, on a concrete runway.

CALL TO ACTION– Sensenbrenner Letter :
US Representative James Sensenbrenner is asking all Members of the United States House of Representatives to co-sign a letter he is sending to the leadership running the Highway bill conference committee.

The letter urges the leadership to include the language from HR 904, the bill that prohibits any future federal funding of motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. HR 904 has bipartisan support. Sensenbrenner is asking for signatures before June 5th, so time is of the essence.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is asking you to call your Federal Representative and ask them to sign onto the Sensenbrenner motorcycle-only checkpoint letter. Pick up the phone and make this important call, its crucial to the future of motorcycling.

With the June 5th deadline, its important to contact your Federal Representatives as soon as possible.
You can reach them through the US Capitol switchboard: 202 224 3121
Should you not know who your Federal Representative is, you can use this website to look it up: http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
The text of the letter is below:

Senator Barbara Boxer
Chair

410 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
Senator James M. Inhofe
Ranking Member
Senate Environment & Public Works Committee

Representative John L. Mica

Representative Nick J. Rahall II
Ranking Member
House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee
2163 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Committee Chairs and Ranking Members:
There is broad bipartisan support on Capitol Hill, and among motorcycle groups across the country, for efforts by Congress to prohibit the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from funding motorcycle-only-checkpoints (MOCs). We respectfully request that the House-Senate conference committee support this effort by including H.R. 904 in the surface transportation reauthorization conference report.

This provision would prohibit the DOT from providing funds to state and local governments for the purpose of establishing MOCs. MOCs are a controversial and unproven method of addressing motorcyclist safety and have not been an efficient use of limited federal dollars. The very existence of this program essentially profiles a group of citizens – the motorcycling community – for operating a legal mode of transportation.

In addition, DOT should be prohibited from making funds available for MOCs because there are more effective uses of taxpayer money to address motorcycle safety. DOT should focus on programs to instruct motorcyclists on the importance of proper licensing, rider education, and motorcycle awareness campaigns. These efforts will do more to prevent motorcycle crashes than mandatory checkpoints to inspect helmets and tailpipes.

You may recall that H.R. 904 has more than 40 bipartisan cosponsors. Including this language in the conference report would be a victory for encouraging effective motorcycle safety efforts.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
US Representative James Sensenbrenner

WMDRA Goes to Vegas–Next Race — Sturgis, SD–The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway did not disappoint as the WMDRA pulled into town on Saturday, May 19th for the second race of their 2012 season. The weather was hot in the low-90s but cooled off into the evening. Open Fuel winner Ron Gledhill said it best, “The Las Vegas track had exceptionally good traction even during the heat of the day, and the track just got better as the night went on. Las Vegas always does a great job on track preparation.”

As with any one-day show, it was a long day/evening, but there were great rounds of racing and a 0.0612 margin of victory for the Open Fuel class! Congratulations to winner Ron Gledhill aboard his Top Fuel Nitro Harley, running 6.739 at 199.79 mph to runner up Len Darnell, running 6.753 at 195.22. Len did an outstanding job as #1 Qualifier at his first WMDRA race, running his Suzuki in the 6’s all day long!

A big thank you to all the racers that supported the one-day show and many thanks for your professionalism and sportsmanship… the WMDRA has been invited back to Las Vegas (date to be determined)!

Arizona racers Fred Love and Bill Bentz battled it out in the Pro Gas class, with the win going to Fred Love, after both racers suffered mechanical issues. Bentz enjoyed his maiden voyage riding Bob Bongiorno’s Pro Gas bike, previously ridden by Scotty Pollacheck, who is now competing in the NHRA Full Throttle series aboard the Star Racing Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Noah Penright took the Pro Stock class win with an 8.570 at 154.63 mph over #1 Qualifier Paul Morris, who also suffered mechanical issues.

Top Gas winner and #1 Qualifier John Hren took out runner up Thad Wiltz with an 8.440 @ 132.26 mph over 8.713 at 152.28 mph. Keep an eye out for Keith Kizer’s Dragbike POTW feature on John and his family.

The Pro ET win went to local favorite Dennis Sacco over Keith Washington from Las Angeles, California. And Street ET went to Dana Winters out of Veradale, Washington who travelled almost 1200 miles to race his H2 750 2-stroke Kawasaki down the Strip at Las Vegas for his birthday!

Special thanks to Terry and Peg Brown for their undying support of the WMDRA and for all their hard work on the raffle… congratulations to 50/50 winner Stan Sheppard!

Congratulations everyone and we’ll see you all in Sturgis! Sturgis event or contingency sponsors welcome and appreciated.

BARBER MOTORSPORTS NEWS–Stars of “The Chase” to perform at Triumph Superbike Classic.

Professional motorcycle stunt riders Nick “Apex” Brocha and Ernie “EDub” Vigil will return to Barber Motorsports Park next month for the first time since filming the highly viewed video “The Chase” at the renowned road course and motorsports museum.

Nick and Ernie, who also star in the “Motorcycles vs. Car Drift 2” film that’s been viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube in just four months, will perform both Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24, at Alabama’s Triumph Superbike Classic. This is the sixth round and mid-point of the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing schedule.

“We’re very excited to add Nick and Ernie to our Triumph Superbike weekend,” said Rick Humphrey, Vice President of ZOOM Motorsports, the exclusive event promoter at Barber Motorsports Park. “It will be a very nice addition to our weekend. These guys have built a huge following doing things on motorcycles that you might never have thought were possible, and we are thrilled to secure them for our event.”

With the help of Triumph, Nick and Ernie came to Birmingham earlier in the year to film “The Chase.” While at Barber, the two met up with Triumph road racer and 2011 Daytona 200 winner Jason DiSalvo to shoot the seven-minute segment. The video features some of the same stunts that will be performed during the Triumph Superbike Classic weekend and has been viewed by more than 650,000 people since going online in February.

The Triumph Speed Triple drift bikes used in both films will be on display during the AMA Pro Road Racing event weekend at the Triumph tent located in the expo area. Both Nick and Ernie also will be in the Triumph area for pictures and autographs.

To view “The Chase” or to purchase tickets for the Triumph Superbike Classic go to www.barbermotorsports.com. Tickets for the Triumph Superbike Classic start at just $15 and kids 15 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult. The Motorcycle Super Saver package is available until June 21st with access to three motorcycle events at Barber Motorsports Park in 2012, along with complimentary motorcycle parade laps during the Triumph Superbike Classic.

While at Barber Motorsports Park, fans are encouraged to visit the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, a 144,000 square foot home to the largest private collection of motorcycles, representing 20 countries and over 200 manufacturers. Tickets to the Museum are available for an additional fee and can be purchased at the door.

BIKERNET’S CONFUSIOUS SAYS–
At Last, I Am NO Longer Confused.
I became confused when I heard the word “Service” used with these organizations:
Internal Revenue ‘Service’ ?U.S. Postal ‘Service’?Telephone ‘Service’?Cable TV ‘Service’?Civil ‘Service’ Public Health ‘Service’?Customer ‘Service’
I was confused because this is not what I thought the word ‘Service’ meant.

Luckily, today I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had hired a bull to ‘Service’ a few cows. BAM!!! – it all came into focus. Now I understand what all those agencies are doing to us. You are now as enlightened as I am!

CULPEPER, Va. (AP) – A special investigative grand jury has indicted a Culpeper police officer in the fatal shooting of a woman and his mother for trying to destroy negative information in his police personnel file.

Fauquier County Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Fisher says 32-year-old Daniel Harmon-Wright was charged with murder and gun violations in the Feb. 9 shooting of 54-year-old Patricia Ann Cook.

His mother, 55-year-old Bethany Sullivan was charged with three counts of forgery of public documents for attempting to purge the records while she was an administrative secretary to the police chief.

The shooting occurred when Harmon-Wright was responding to a report of a suspicious woman in a vehicle in a church parking lot. He shot Cook after an altercation.

Harmon-Wright is being held without bond. His mother was released on bond.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF TWO WHEELS–
A discussion recently came up as to why bikers are more religious then other groups. True it isn’t unusual to see Christian motorcycle groups but in thinking about it would be unusual to see a group of office workers or a whole company that has fractioned off to be more Christian. We don’t see a band of police officers that proudly display their religious beliefs for everyone to see but in the motorcycle world we simply smile and wave. We attend funerals and we attend gravesites, we say a prayer for those in bad times, a word for those in jail. The question was to why we as bikers are more “religious” then other groups.

I don’t think we bikers are more religious but we are more spiritual and there is a big difference between the two. To be religious is to belong to a specific church, you attend church regularly and you read your version of the bible. It gives you a safe pass, that all your sins and transgressions are automatically forgiven because you enter the confining walls of the church.

Religious people believe that their religion, and only their religion is the right religion and everyone else will burn in the fires of hell for being wrong. It is this belief that is common to all organized religions whether it is Christian, Catholic, Jewish or Muslin.

To be spiritual is a different ball of wax. Being spiritual means you believe you are a small part of something bigger (and not always God). You find peace in the natural world, you believe in doing right and knowing what is wrong. That is why most bikers are spiritual. Riding puts you in touch with the world, the real world. You feel the sun on your skin, the smell of a cornfield; you smell the rain, feel electricity in the air after a lightening strike. You watch the shadow of a cloud cross the open prairie. You see the beauty in the dancing flames of a fire, the knarl in the trunk of a tree, the crashing surf, a beautiful woman dancing, the ticking of cooling drag pipes after a long day riding. Few riders will deny the beauty of these things whether you believe you are simply part of it or part of a plan. We find inner peace and sanctuary in these moments whether they bring us closer to the Great Spirit, God, mother earth, or to ourselves personally.

We feel it in our hearts; we feel it in our souls. It is unexplainable and maybe that is why many label it as the work of God. Most of my family is involved with religion in one way or another and they always gave me a hard time about not going to church until I told them “Men makes churches, God makes trees. I’m closer to God sitting in a park on a Sunday morning watching my kids play then they will ever be.”

It is this spiritual group that bikers belong. Even the good friends that I’ve made with the Christian Motorcyclists are non-denomination. They don’t ask people to believe in God – to follow a set path. They only ask for people to accept the beauty in the world that is around them.

WEEKLY TOPIC FROM BIKERNET BAGGERS SUPREME EDITOR IN CHIEF–  Just exactly how do you deal with excessive nose hair? I haven’t shaved since 1971….except my legs (halloween 1978 seemed like a solid costume idea at the time). Although, my beard did catch on fire in 1982 and had to have the burnt remnants chopped away at the Santa Clara County burn unit.

Of course I was on morphine at the time. When I originally called 911, and told the operator “I was all burned up,” she responded, “you shouldn’t party so much!”

She thought I had said “I’m all burned out.” Which in the end was pretty much the same thing don’t ya think? It was a hell of a party!

TRIPLE PLEDGE HELPS ABATE OF WISCONSIN–  Hupy and Abraham, S.C. and Attorney Michael Hupy pledge matching grants to Dan Frantz Fund
ABATE of Wisconsin owns ABATE Acres, the organization’s land and home of the annual ABATE party, Summer Hummer.
Last year, through a matching grant offer from Hupy and Abraham, S.C. $17,000 was raised to help pay down the mortgage on ABATE Acres.

At the beginning of 2012, Attorney Michael Hupy announced a Triple Match pledge. Hupy and Abraham, S.C. would match any donations up to $10,000 until December 31, 2012. In addition, Attorney Hupy would personally match any donations up to $10,000 for the same time period.

We learned that as of May 20, 2012 ABATE of Wisconsin had received over $10,000 in donations meaning that with the combined matching grant pledges from Hupy and Abraham, S.C. and Attorney Hupy, over $30,000 will be paid on the mortgage for ABATE Acres. Even though the triple match challenge has been met it is our hope that individuals and businesses continue to donate to the Dan Frantz Fund throughout the year. Meanwhile, plans are being made to present two checks, each in the amount of $10,000 to ABATE of Wisconsin’s Dan Frantz Fund at the upcoming Summer Hummer state party in June.

MYSTERY BELT GUARD FROM RIVERA PRIMO–Over the past gazillion years, I have constantly been asked by customers from all walks of life (and almost living) to come up with a belt guard that covers the belt and moving stuff, but where they still can see that they have an open belt drive. As we all know, open belt drives are way cool, but can also be a bit dangerous to bell bottom jeans and long scarves. Well, the engineers at RPI (Rivera Primo Inc.) for many years have been pouring over technical manuals, going to plastics seminars (what fun), studying star charts and generally sitting in our conference room with a doobie and a bottle of torpedoe red trying to come up with such a thing as an invisible force field for an open belt drive. And guess what? We done did it! Well, not the forcefield thingy, but we created a polycarbonate, optically clear, UV resistant, shatter resistant outer guard for most open belt drives. YES WE DID! As you see below, our kind and thoughtful Office Manager modeling our newest creation, the TransparaGuard™

Is That Cool or What???

The TransparaGuard does what we were asked for, it protects you fully from the moving parts, but allows everyone and their grandmother to see that you indeed gotcha a Open Belt Drive. Its a beautiful thing, and what’s more, you can paint, machine, engrave or just stare at the TransparaGuard anytime you like. This puppy will be available almost immediately for our Primo® Brute IV Extreme (2014-0078) and also for any manufacturers belt drive as a universal fit (2014-0149). Other applications will soon follow, as well as versions with built-in LED lighting..

I mean DAMN THE TORPEDOES AND FULL SPEED AHEAD!!

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER NUTRITIONAL SEMINAR FROM DR. WEIL–Fresh green peas are a naturally sweet and delicious addition to any spring meal. They are a good source of vitamins K and C, manganese and fiber, and may help promote bone, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal health. There are three popular pea types:

•Green or garden peas, which have inedible pods

•Snow peas, a version with edible pods popular in Asian cooking

•Snap peas, an edible-pod cross between the green pea and the snow pea

Snow and garden peas are available in early spring, and look for snap peas later in the season. No matter which variety you choose, buy them as fresh as possible. Although you can store them in the refrigerator for several days, they are best enjoyed the same day.

A BLONDE JOKE THAT YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE!–HARK!!! A new blonde joke!!!

After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, ‘Well, then, maybe I’ll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!’

The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, ‘Well, little lady, why don’t you go on and give it a try?’

The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator. Later in the day, as the shopkeeper was driving home, he spotted the same young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand.

As he brought his car to a stop, he saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blonde took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank.

Nearby were seven more dead gators all lying belly up. The shopkeeper stood on the bank, watching in silent amazement as the blonde struggled mightily and barely managed to flip the gator onto its back. Then, rolling her eyes heavenward, she screamed in frustration…..

‘CRAP! THIS ONE’S BAREFOOT, TOO!

NOISE ORDINANCE CHANGES–  By ETHAN SHOREY, Valley Breeze Staff Writer PAWTUCKET – One city official is seeking tighter restrictions on motorcycles due to complaints of excessive noise, while another, an avid biker who has strong ties to the local motorcycle community, is calling the proposal “subjective” and “biased.”

District 6 City Council member Jim Chadwick would like to see motorcycles quieted through a new law that would give police wide-ranging authority to impose fines for loud noise.
Chadwick’s proposal specifically targets motorcycles. All it would take for police to issue a fine is for them to find that excessive noise is the result of an exhaust system that “has been modified in such a way to generate a higher sound level than would be generated by” the manufacturer’s exhaust system.

But City Councilor Albert Vitali Jr. isn’t hearing it.
“I have people who are sensitive to my loud voice because I speak loud,” he said.
“If the ordinance passed and specified motorcycles only, the police could sit out in front of a business on a daily basis and issue fines any time they want,” said Vitali.

Businesses like Precision Harley-Davidson, which “pay extreme amounts of taxes,” said Vitali, would be killed by such an ordinance.

Vitali wants to see any mention of motorcycles removed from any revised noise ordinance. Further he wants any revisions to include language that sets specific, measurable decibel level limits that apply to all vehicles.

Vitali, who owns a Harley-Davidson Road King Classic with an original factory exhaust, said he will not let his love of bikes cloud his judgment in seeking the best noise ordinance possible.
He wants to see a predetermined decibel level incorporated into the noise ordinance for all types of vehicles “instead of picking on” certain ones.
Chadwick said last week that the ordinance he set forth has “bite” in fixing a “quality of life” issue.
“It’s a tool for us to use,” he said.

Chadwick said that one of the worst areas for loud motorcycles is Webster Street, where motorcycles that he says are louder than the average motorcycle are the norm as they leave the social clubs there late at night.

“We’re not talking about bikes like Al drives,” he said.

The following is the portion of the proposed ordinance that has Vitali the most worked up:
“Every motor vehicle shall at all times (be) equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke.

“No person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device up on a motor vehicle on a street or highway within the city of Pawtucket. Any exhaust system shall be deemed defective and in violation of this subsection if any changes, modifications, alterations, deletions or adjustments have been made which would cause the exhaust system to generate a higher or louder sound level than would be generated by the manufacturer’s original equipment.”

Ordinance Committee Chairman Tom Hodge said last week that he likes the idea that the proposed noise ordinance includes all vehicles, but isn’t sure why motorcycles are specifically targeted. Like the city’s ordinance on loud music, said Hodge, he thinks a decibel-metering system for vehicles could also make a positive impact. Motor vehicles should be defined as state law defines them, he said.

Chadwick would like to see the following replaced: “It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any motor-driven vehicle within the city in such a manner that a reasonable person of normal sensitiveness residing in the area is caused discomfort or annoyance.”

Instead, “any sound or noise emanating from any motor vehicle,” sound that is “audible to a person of reasonably sensitive hearing at a distance of 200 feet from its source,” would be considered a violation.

According to Police Chief Paul King, a tougher noise ordinance would give police an open door to clean up noise pollution. Police would not target the bikers who rev their engines to avoid getting hit by oncoming traffic as he merges onto I-95, said King, but the ones like the two that ride up Smithfield Avenue almost every night at around 11 p.m., shaking the buildings as they go.

Committee members said they want all interested parties to have a say in any changes that might ultimately be approved as part of a new noise ordinance. The ordinance committee will likely consider an amended ordinance, minus the wording targeting motorcycles and with added enforcement tools, at its next scheduled meeting on June 6.

“We should have everybody’s side so if it does go to a vote, we would have all the information that we need,” said Vitali.

OHIO Helping panhandler led to $344 ticket– CLEVELAND — An Ohio man is fighting a littering ticket he says he got when he tried to give money to a panhandler in a wheelchair, and the cash fell to the ground.. A Cleveland police spokeswoman says the panhandler was at a busy intersection where it’s illegal to solicit or give money.

John Davis, of Elyria, says he reached out of his vehicle on May 17 to give a panhandler a couple of dollars, but the money dropped. He was then given a $344 ticket. He pleaded not guilty.??Davis could have been ticketed for donating to a panhandler but was cited for a potentially more expensive violation.

NEW BC HELMET LAW COMING–by Wayne Moore -New motorcycle safety regulations come into effect across BC Friday.

The new regulations make it mandatory for all motorcyclists and their passengers to wear helmets that display the proper industry safety certification label.
Helmets must comply with standards outlined by:
58.The US Department of Transportation (DOT)
59.Snell Memorial Foundation 2005 or 2012
60.United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE)
Riders violating the new law will be subject to a $138 fine.

New seating laws have also been put in place to protect both riders and passengers.
Police across the province have also been armed with educational materials to distribute to riders to inform them of the new laws.

“Avid riders, road safety advocates, emergency room physicians, police and families of riders have offered very positive feedback about these changes,” says Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Shirley Bond.

“They know the laws aren’t about taking away from the riding experience, they’re simply about saving lives.”

Jamie Graham, chair of the BC Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee says police have been asking for improved safety standards for motorcyclists for some time.
“Terrible harm has been caused by inadequate safety equipment and bad personal choices,” says Graham.

While the government says it is trying to make motorcyclists safer on the road, it also states two-thirds of all crashes between a motorcycle and another vehicle is the fault of the other vehicle.
ICBC and the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles have partnered on an awareness campaign to inform drivers about the vulnerabilities motorcyclists face.

The campaign focuses on road safety tips aimed to reducing injuries and fatalities. These include:

•Be aware – Check your mirrors frequently, be aware of road conditions that pose hazards to motorcyclists and look carefully for traffic at intersections. It can be difficult to judge the speed and?distance of a motorcyclist so be extra cautious, especially when turning left.

•Watch for clues – Watch for signs such as turn signals, shoulder checks or leaning, signaling the rider may turn or change lanes.

•Share the road – Motorcycles use a full lane. Leave at least three seconds of following distance behind a motorcycle.

•Be courteous – Acknowledge riders with a wave or eye contact. Give riders the space they need to change lanes and never try to pass a motorcycle using the same lane.

The province is also moving forward with a graduated licensing program that includes power restrictions following additional consultation to determine the best model.

TAKE A BREATH—I need to do that once in a while. I’m grappling with an IMac with a new operating system and it’s enough to drive a sane man nuts. New passwords abound, new operating system, and nothing works the same. I just want to write and be left alone, but no fuckin’ way.

My next dilemma is the photo program. I used Adobe Photo Shop Elements. Of course it won’t transfer over to my new operating system, so I paid for and downloaded Iphoto, but I can’t figure out how to size photos. What the hell?

So, do I figure out Iphoto or go back to Adobe Photo Shop elements. Help me Mr. Wizard.

We have lots of material headed your way from 97-inch engine upgrades to more Bonneville builds and improvement to the Mudflap girl bikes. Bruce is looking at my Cantina Episode 62, and next I will work on a chapter of World Run. We need to find the next girl of Bikernet, and the sharpest, tightest Panhead in the world is headed your way.

In the meantime, have a helluva weekend. Oh, I’m trying one more Progressive shock configuration. Somehow we will pull off just the right formula.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
