STURGIS GROWTH THURSDAY NEWS FOR AUGUST 9, 2012

Hey,

Half the world is in Sturgis, and the other half wishes they were in the Badlands drinkin’ whiskey and doing a burnout. It’s incredible. Reports indicate increased crowds.

I ran over to the new BDL Headquarters the other day. What an amazing new facility where they build BDL, GMA, and pump products. The building is clean as a whistle and production friendly. Over the next couple of weeks we will bring you reports on new GMA/BDL products, including this new clutch basket locking tool.

Let’s hit the news. My thoughts are of our Bonneville projects, a new trailer, and a brother stepped up to help us with a vehicle upgrade to a 2004 1500 Express. Bandit is going to trade Richard Kransler, his 1956 Shovelhead for this custom van conversion. Shit, that means the Bikernet Hearse is for sale. It’s amazing trying to pull all the elements together to afford to hit the trail to the Salt flats. We just received our first reader contribution, from Brian Ingraham, the owner of Empire Cigar and Jerky Works. He sent us a box of Empire Jerky. If only we could weld it together and build a motorcycle trailer. Thanks Brian, we appreciate any contribution.

MUDFLAP GIRL FXR MOD–That Aeromach mirror made all the difference in the world! Now I can see.

THE DOUBLE TIMKEN LOWER END TECHNOLOGY– Talked to a bunch people in the industry in the know. The idea was not to make this bearing conversion,
like the left side drive Timken conversion or for a hot street bike. It designed was for a gear drive cammed Twin Cam racing engine, ie Bonneville/Drag’s/Turbo’s etc.

Most of the people I talked to know there is room for improvement in the right side, pinion bearing area of the Twin Cam. Harley’s tolerance for the flywheels and pinion bearing are ridiculous even for a street bike in my opinion.

One idea from one source was to do a conversion something like the old Evo/Shovel pinion bearing. This would require a bearing race sleeve, line hone the sleeve/race to the left side, and fit with the old roller bearings. Lots of work, but a good idea.
I still think the double Timken bearing for the pinion shaft or Timken/roller bearing, like Delkron would be easier and better. Yes, assembly will be more work. Again my intention is not for a street bike but a full race engine.

So my brain fart will require a special Timken bearing insert similar to the Jim’s left drive side Timken conversion but of a different design. I believe that an insert flange might be made, so it is on the cam chest side of the right
case. This is because the flywheel assembly is so close to inside off the right case half. Not totally sure on this just yet.

Either way it’s gonna involve some machining of the right half case.

Comprende Amigo, yes??

We have looked at doing double
Timken bearings… Both with case machining and inserts. Never put very much resources in it though.

It’s not a crazy notion, just small niche’

MEETING OF THE MINDS 2012–  The annual Meeting of the Minds is closer than you think. The dates seem early; but it is still the 4th weekend in September. This year those dates are September 20-23.

Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of North Carolina (CBA/ABATE) will be our hosts for this year’s conference. We will be in Durham, NC at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel. For those not familiar with Durham, they share an airport with Raleigh. Our rate for the Conference is $99.00 per night. Be sure to mention the Meeting of the Minds to get our rate. You must make your reservations no later than August 19th to take advantage of the discounted rate. Shuttle service is available to and from the airport to the hotel.

August 19th is also the pre-registration deadline for the Conference. Members pay only $70.00 registration fee; for non-members it is $80.00. On August 20th, the registration fees go up by $10.00 for both members and non-members. Pre-registering is easy. Simply log on to www.mrf.org, click on 2012 Conference Information. A secure link for registration is right on the page. You will also find a link to make your hotel reservation. If you prefer to pay by check you may send you check to the DC office: 236 Massachusetts Ave. NE, Suite 204, Washington, DC 20002. To get the pre-registration rate the envelope must be postmarked no later than August 19th.

The Conference begins on Thursday evening at 7:00PM with the Meet and Greet. This is one of the most important events at any conference. This is where we find out who is in attendance and what issues they are facing at home. It gives us an answer to the question “Who do I need to talk to this weekend?”

Again this year, we have a variety of topics to cover in the General Sessions as well as the offered workshops. We will be doing a panel discussion of what challenges different parts of the country are facing; and how to help each other. Our individual workshops will cover topics ranging from attracting younger (read that sport bike) riders to leadership to an analysis of the CDC statements on motorcycle safety.

Another item to note is this may be the last year for the Tug of War. Currently, the standings are three wins each for Bibs and Kilts. And as an added bonus, Bruce “goes both ways” Downs will come out of retirement and again tug for the team who raises the most money. In the previous year’s that Bruce tugged, the team he was on won three of four matches. We have other fun events planned as well. You will need to join us to find out what all there is to do, and who all there is to meet. See you next month!

NEW FILM BLUE COLLAR BOYS–Please mark your calendars for the theatrical release of our latest film acquisition, Blue Collar Boys.
Leomark Studios is proud to present this first feature by promising young director, Mark Nistico, and we hope you will join us and spread the word!

Blue Collar Boys tells the story of Red, a 27-year-old construction worker, who must take over the family business to save his family. Inspired by true events, Blue Collar Boys captures the reality and pathos of the working man in today’s world, where the rich and corrupt are “too big to fail.” Brave New Hollywood calls Blue Collar Boys “a searing reflection of our times.”

AHDRA Announces 2013 AHDRA Championship Series–  The All Harley Drag Racing Association is pleased to announce that the 2013 AHDRA Championship Series schedule will comprise six races, beginning March 9-10, 2013 in Gainesville, Florida, and concluding on October 12-13, 2013 in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Compared to previous years, AHDRA has reduced its schedule to six dates to focus on its historically strongest events, which AHDRA director Craig Tharpe explains is partly a result of the recent announcement of the formation of the NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship Motorcycle Series, a 10-race series that will compete at NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional events beginning in 2013.

Tharpe noted that while AHDRA has reduced the number of events in its Championship Series, the new NHRA series will provide an additional ten race dates for competitors in several AHDRA classes to compete in. At least one NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship Motorcycle Series race will be held in each of the seven NHRA divisions, with the remaining three race locations to be selected based on scheduling and the best competition opportunities for Harley-Davidson motorcycle racers. The final series schedule will be announced later this year following the 2012 NHRA awards banquet in November.

The NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship Motorcycle Series events will host five AHDRA classes, including Top Fuel Nitro Harley, Pro Gas, Street Pro, Hot Street and Draggin’ Bagger. AHDRA will continue to host these classes along with its normal class lineup at all of its championship events.

“Harley-Davidson and Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts are pleased to continue our commitment to the AHDRA as a presenting sponsor of six events in the AHDRA Championship Series,” said Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Kris Schoonover. “Combined with the announcement of the new NHRA Screamin’ Eagle series, the opportunities for sportsman drag racers to showcase the power and performance of Harley-Davidson motorcycles at racing venues nationwide has never been greater.”

NEW BIKERNET ’59 IMPALA BOAT AND VEHICLE—Can we carry all our gear for Bonneville?

LOS ANGELES ALERT, 405 TO BE CLOSED–  As one of our valued Metro stakeholders, we are including you once again in a series of email distributions pertaining to the second full closure of the I-405 freeway beginning September 29 through September 30, 2012. It is our hope that you can relay the emails to your own contacts so the information reaches the widest possible audience.

For this second full closure we are asking drivers to “Plan Ahead, Avoid the Area, or Eat, Shop and Play Locally.”

As background, Metro’s improvement of the I-405 freeway through the Sepulveda Pass will add a northbound HOV lane. This effort requires the demolition and reconstruction of Mulholland Bridge. We began this effort by demolishing the south side of the bridge in July 2011. With the south side near reconstruction, it is time to demolish the north side of the bridge. Because of the design of Mulholland Bridge, it cannot be demolished in sections the way Sunset Bridge was, hence the need to demolish an entire side over a weekend.

The 53-hour closure of the I-405 will be managed through an incident command post headed by LAFD/LAPD/CHP/Caltrans/Metro. As with last year, our outreach to commuters and travelers will reach national audiences, as well as local, regional, and statewide stakeholders.

Consequently, please expect to receive regularly emails, including approved detour maps, and several channels through which you can receive up-to-the-minute updates. We intend to provide you with all the critical information you will need leading up to the demolition date. We ask you to help us to encourage travelers to refrain from driving through the affected area.

Your first line for information is the project website: www.metro.net/405, as well as the project’s social media sites: twitter.com/I_405 or www.facebook.com/405project. You may also call Jennifer Gill at 213.922.4224 for a referral to your regional lead. Please be advised that our Board of Directors and the agency staff are committed to informing you with the latest information, up to and including the weekend closure. In the future, all communication on this freeway closure will be labeled I-405 Sepulveda Pass Closure Alert.

BIKERNET CLOCK GONG– While proudly showing off his new apartment to friends late one night, the drunk led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong.

“What’s that big brass gong for?” one of the guests asked.

“That’s a talking clock” the man replied.

“How does it work?”

“Watch”, the man said, giving it an ear-shattering pound with a hammer.

Suddenly, someone on the other side of the wall screamed, “For gods sake, you wanker, it’s 2am in the morning!!”

NEW AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE EXPO HEADS TO ORLANDO IN 2013– It works out very good for staffing for us, for Biketoberfest we do event sponsorship and no booth. I’ll have two reps in Orlando at the Expo, and I’ll do Daytona. Overall I think our costs will be greatly reduced and we’ll be in front of dealers who normally don’t make the trip to V-Twin or Indy….. plus consumer days should be good.

Stats so far show Sturgis up 15 -20%, I think that’s accurate. Weather has been hot and dry with just a few T-storms.

BIKERNET SIMPLE TRUTHS–

SIMPLE TRUTH 1

Partners help each other undress before sex.
However after sex, they always dress on their own.
Moral of the story: In life, no one helps you once you’re screwed.

SIMPLE TRUTH 2
When a lady is pregnant, all her friends touch the stomach and saying “congrats”.
But, none of them come and touch the man’s penis and say “Good job”.
Moral of the story: “Hard work is never appreciated.

FIVE RULES TO REMEMBER IN LIFE
1. Money cannot buy happiness, but it’s more comfortable to cry in a Corvette than on a bicycle.
2. Forgive your enemy, but remember the asshole’s name.
3. If you help someone when they’re in trouble, they will remember you when they’re in trouble again.
4. Many people are alive only because it’s illegal to shoot them.
5. Alcohol does not solve any problems, but then neither does milk.

THERE YOU HAVE IT … and remember, life is good!

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE CUSTOM BIKE BUILDING BLUES–I don’t mind saying Snow White has a smudge on her. Well smudges, bug splatter and everything else the highways of this great nation can throw at her. I’m not shocked or surprised. Road grim is part of riding. It gets in everywhere. It brings a funk to the bike.

I knew this when I decided to build a white and chrome bike. I accepted the pure alabaster challenge. I have built many bright bikes including silver, so I knew what I was getting into before sandpaper even hit the metal. I’m not complaining. I actually like cleaning my bike, getting into all the little nooks and crannies that grim likes to find but push comes to shove I will go riding over cleaning any day.

Cleaning is for the end of day when everyone else has gone to bed or first thing in the morning before everyone else has risen from too much enjoyment the night before. It is a time to check over the bike. Make sure everything is tight and where it should be. Find out what needs attention and give attention to where it is needed.

A spotless bike is a bike that is never ridden. I ride mine. If you see it on the streets of Sturgis, Spearfish, or Deadwood she was obviously ridden there. Yes, she might be cleaner then some of the bikes but I’m not afraid of bugs, dirt and grease.

NEW ETHANOL CONTROVERSY– I do not want alcohol in my gasoline, and I do not want gasoline in my alcohol. I love Shovelheads and old Hondas, and they love the Pure No Ethanol Premium Gasoline I can still buy at one station in our town. My brand new push mower says do not use E-15 in it. They have had 30 years to convince me that turning corn flakes and pig feed into fuel is a good idea and they keep failing.

Federal officials mandating minimum four-gallon gasoline purchase from certain ethanol-blend pumps–from the AMA

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will require all consumers to buy at least four gallons of gasoline from certain gas pumps after the new E15 ethanol-gasoline blend is introduced into the market, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

The EPA revealed the requirement to the AMA in a letter dated Aug. 1, responding to AMA concerns that E15 — a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume — could be put in motorcycle and ATV gas tanks inadvertently when consumers use blender pumps. A blender pump dispenses different fuel blends through the same hose, and the vast majority of motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in use today aren’t designed to operate on E15 fuel.

“With E15 gasoline, our members who make a concerted effort to fuel their motorcycles or ATVs with E10-or-less gasoline may be unknowingly refueling with residual fuel left in the hose,” Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations, wrote in a June 20 letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

“Unlike an automobile or SUV that has a large fuel tank, the residual fuel left in a fueling hose could be detrimental to the performance of motorcycle or ATV engines due to the small size of their fuel tanks and the higher concentration of ethanol that would, therefore, be present in the fuel,” Allard wrote.

“In addition, the use of E15 will lower fuel efficiency and possibly cause premature engine failure,” he wrote. “Use of E15 fuel voids many manufacturer warranties. In off-road engines, the effects can even be dangerous for users.”

Byron Bunker of the EPA National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory responded to the AMA on behalf of Jackson.

“EPA requires that retail stations that own or operate blender pumps either dispense E15 from a dedicated hose and nozzle if able or, in the case of E15 and E10 being dispensed from the same hose, require that at least four gallons of fuel be purchased to prevent vehicles and engines with smaller fuel tanks from being exposed to gasoline-ethanol blended fuels containing greater than 10 volume percent ethanol,” Bunker wrote.

“Additionally, EPA is requiring that retail stations that offer E10 and E15 from the same hose and nozzle use additional labeling to inform consumers about the minimum purchase requirement,” Bunker wrote.

“Since motorcyclists and ATV users, as you suggest, have relatively small fuel tanks, they should pay careful attention to the labeling of blender pumps to ensure that an appropriate fuel is chosen, in this case E10 or E0,” he wrote.

Another problem with the new EPA policy, Allard said, is that not all motorcycle and ATV gas tanks hold four or more gallons.

“Not only do we find it unacceptable for the EPA to mandate that everyone — including our members — buy minimum amounts of gas, but the EPA answer simply won’t work because of the sizes of many motorcycle and ATV gas tanks and the fact that off-highway riders take containers of gas with them on their trips, and most times those containers are much smaller than four gallons,” Allard said.

“The EPA needs to come up with a better solution,” he said. “The EPA also needs to back an independent study to determine whether E15 is safe for motorcycle and ATV engines.”

The AMA has repeatedly expressed concerns to government officials and federal lawmakers about possible damage to motorcycle and ATV engines caused by the inadvertent use of E15 when the new fuel becomes widely available, and has asked that motorcycles and ATVs be part of any scientific study into the effects of E15.

Ethanol is essentially grain alcohol produced from crops such as corn that is mixed with gasoline to produce an ethanol-gasoline blend motor fuel. In October 2010, the EPA approved the use of E15 in model year 2007 and newer light-duty vehicles (cars, light-duty trucks and medium-duty passenger vehicles). Then, in January 2011, the EPA added model year 2001-06 light-duty vehicles to the approved list.

No motorcycles or ATVs are currently on the list.

WAIT! DID THE AMA GET IT RIGHT?– The Tuesday AMA release blasting ethanol is completely inaccurate, please read it yourself carefully. They misquote the very article they cite and come to the exact opposite conclusion of what it actually says.

Everyone reading the article and responding in social media is interpreting AMA’s position to say the government soon will somehow be forcing each and every one of us to buy at least 4 gallons of ??(I presume they imply ethanol).

What the article actually says—– is that a E-15 pump will not start pumping (dispensing) the higher mixture (it pumps e-10) until 4 gallons, only then does e-15 start flowing. The article actually says this is to PREVENT accidental misfueling of small engines just because we all have smaller gas tanks. AMA’s editorializing is completely inaccurate.

As far as the E-15 “mandate”, yes to achieve the number of gallons that CONGRESS (not the EPA) set as a goal a lot more of it would have to be sold, that much is true…however no federal “mandate” exists to force any station to put in said hi blend pumps nor force the public to use that nozzle.

I hope AMA has some good lawyers, this looks to me like it is eligible for a lawsuit.

Driven by Fuel Efficiency, U.S. Auto Industry JOBS UP Nearly A Quarter Million Since 2009–New Final Federal Fuel Economy Rules for 54.5 MPG Expected in Mid-August; Highlighting MI, IN, and OH Employment Impacts, Report Available at New DrivingGrowth.org Website.

Detroit August 8, 2012 – With the launch of new federal vehicle fuel economy rules only about one week away, the American auto industry has grown by nearly a quarter million jobs (236,600) since June 2009 when the auto industry hit bottom, according to a new report available from www.DrivingGrowth.org.

The report from DrivingGrowth.org finds that fuel efficiency is a major factor behind the gains in U.S. auto jobs. A website that tracks the revitalization of the U.S. auto industry, DrivingGrowth.org is sponsored by three leading U.S. environmental organizations: The Natural Resources Defense Council, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Michigan League of Conservation Voters Education Fund.

Manufacturing of motor vehicle and parts has grown by 165,100, or 26.4 percent since June 2009. Another 71,500 jobs have been added at U.S. auto dealerships. Automakers, their suppliers and their dealers are now looking ahead to a brighter future after the dark days of the recession.

BIKERNET STAFFER HAS AN ISSUE WITH THE IRS–I just received my tax return for 2011 back from the IRS. It puzzles me!!! They are questioning how many dependents I claimed.

I guess it was because of my response to the question: “List all dependents?” I replied: 12 million illegal immigrants; 3 million crack heads;
42 million unemployed people on food stamps, 2 million people in over 243 prisons; Half of Mexico; and 535 persons in the U.S. House and Senate.

I KEEP ASKING MYSELF, WHO DID I MISS?– Kaizen: The bikes that tripped your teenage trigger.

Remember those early Japanese bikes that tripped your teenage trigger? The ones that put so many of us on the motorcycle road for the rest of our lives? What did you really want, that motorcycle, or the attention it would get you? It didn’t matter, were both good. Impressing the girl, feeling the wind, making memories.

Some of us didn’t stay on the motorcycle road. We left to get an education, defend the country, get married, raise kids, pursue a career, whatever. Many of us returned later, when we had more time, more money, and usually a larger belt size, answering the pangs of nostalgia.

And some of us didn’t return, but really wish we had.

Don’t worry, the Motorcyclepedia Museum will give you your nostalgia fix with Kaizen, the first exhibit in America dedicated exclusively to classic Japanese motorcycles. “Kaizen” is a Japanese word that means “beneficial change.” It is also the business philosophy of constant incremental improvement that enabled the Japanese to revolutionize the world motorcycle market.
So join us, as we travel back to see the bikes you had and the ones you wish you had; the ones that gave you memories of a lifetime. Kaizen opens September 7, 2012. For times, directions, and more information, go to www.motorcyclepediamuseum.org/.

BIKERNET READER COMMENT—Oil Cooler install tech.

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=1695

Really hot here, bike runs around 260-290, way too hot, probably due to wrong air-fuel ratio. Just standard engine arrangment, Harley style,-bad idea to say the least. 2011 Ultra Limited 103.

Your article is first class, over any other similiar presentation.Directions and Photography are very good. Just a question: Is it necessary to remove the OEM oil cooler in order to install the Bud oil cooler?

–Ron Foster

That is one extensive oil cooler. You might disconnect your OEM job, run the new one and test the oil temps. Let us know the results. If you’re not happy, hook the stock job back up.–Wrench

LOUD PIPES SAVE… AN INDUSTRY? VW got caught with a sound machine in the GTI, but they are not the only OEM trying to compensate for a lack of a proper exhaust note… Just like original Coke, some people will always prefer “The Real Thing!”

WOMEN RIDERS NOW REPORTS FROM THE ROAD–  I am in the midst of some serious summer riding, and as you read this I’ll be attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Thank you to WRN Editorial Assistant Amy Mortensen for holding down the fort while I’m gone and making sure you receive this biweekly newsletter on time.

I just returned from an 1800-mile round trip to Carson City, Nev., for the AMA Women & Motorcycling Conference. What a great time it was. My story on the conference will post in a few weeks. For now, enjoy these stories we’ve posted to WRN in the last two weeks.

Thanks for being an enthusiastic reader of WRN!

DRIVERS TO NOTE! Motion Induced Blindness–  In a motor accident, wherein a speeding car hits a slower moving vehicle coming from the side, the speeding car drivers often swear that they just didn’t see the vehicle coming from the left or right.
Well, they aren’t lying. They really don’t see the vehicle coming from the side, in spite of broad daylight. This phenomenon on the car drivers’ part is known as “Motion Induced Blindness”. It is definitely frightening.

Once airborne, pilots are taught to alternate their gaze between scanning the horizon and scanning their instrument panel, and never to fix their gaze for more than a couple of seconds on any single object. They are taught to continually keep their heads on a swivel and their eyes always moving. Because, if you fix your gaze on one object long enough while you yourself are in motion, your peripheral vision goes blind.

Till about three decades ago, this “heads on swivel & eyes moving” technique was the only way to spot other aircraft in the skies around. Now-a-days they have on-board radars, but the old technique still holds good.

Let me give you a small demonstration of motion induced blindness. Just click on the link below. You will see a revolving array of blue crosses on a black background. There is a flashing green dot in the centre and three fixed yellow dots around it. If you fix your gaze on the green dot for more than a few seconds, the yellow dots will disappear at random . . . , either singly, or in pairs, or all three together. In reality, the yellow dots are always there. Just watch the yellow dots for some time to ensure that they don’t go anywhere!

http://www.msf-usa.org/motion.html

(You can alter the background colour or the rpm of the array by clicking the appropriate buttons. Notes given by the author below the rotating array are educative.)

So, if you are driving at a high speed on a highway and if you fix your gaze on the road straight ahead, you will not see a car, a scooter, a buggy, a bicycle, a buffalo or even a human being approaching from the side. Now reverse the picture. If you are crossing a road on foot and you see a speeding car approaching, . , there’s a 90% chance that the driver isn’t seeing you, because his/her peripheral vision may be blind! And you may be in that blind zone!!

(Try blinking or moving your head slightly in any direction and the yellow dots remain visible…)

Another amazing HAMSTERS USA feat: $200,115 raised for special kids
at Children’s Care in Rapid City, South Dakota–
The international motorcycle group Hamsters USA raised $200,115 for Children’s Care of Rapid City during their annual meeting and dinner on Monday, August 6th. The funds were raised through a silent auction at their banquet in Spearfish, SD, as part of the Sturgis Rally.

Funds raised will provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies, plus special educational and psychological services to children in Western South Dakota–plus parts of Wyoming–through Children’s Care of Rapid City.

Hamsters USA has raised and donated funds at their annual meeting for the last six years, wanting to give back to the greater Black Hills community, which many Hamsters consider to be their second home. Their gifts help provide services to children in their own homes and communities, delivered by Children’s Care personnel who drive over 10,000 miles a month to provide services.

Paul Yaffe honored with 7th annual Chrome Heart Award

Hamster member Paul Yaffe received the Chrome Heart Award, presented by Children’s Care to honor individuals in the motorcycle world “whose philanthropic support and civic duty represents everything positive in the industry and sport of motorcycling.”

Paul is a well-known and sought-after motorcycle designer/builder (Paul Yaffe Originals) and the owner of “Bagger Nation,” which provides products to customize standard motorcycles. This spring Paul and a group of his Hamster USA friends gathered together for friendship and fun at Arizona Bike Week 2012. The event raised $32,000 to help bring outreach and outpatient services to children in the Black Hills region of South Dakota.

Their generosity will impact the lives of over 700 children who would not otherwise have such access to specialized, pediatric therapy and special education services.

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS) — The sole beach in Orange County where dogs can run free is going bankrupt.

The non-profit that runs Huntington Dog Beach, the Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach, is nearly out of money to continue funding the beach.
It needs funding to keep the area, which stretches from Goldenwest Street to Seapoint Street, clean and provide doggie bags.

The beach will be turned over to the city unless the cash comes through…

Thunderbike, Germany, wins 9th annual AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building at Sturgis Motorcycle Rally–  For the first time an authorised Harley-Davidson dealer has scooped the custom motorcycle industry’s design and engineering top prize.

Thunderbike, of Hamminkeln, near Essen in Germany, was chosen by fellow competitors and selected VIP judges to have built the stand-out ‘class of 2012’ custom motorcycle with ‘Pain TT Less’, a hand crafted one-of-kind tour de force that oozes stunning design and engineering excellence from every angle.

Using a restored and modified 1000cc Harley-Davidson Ironhead Sportster engine in a one-off hand-built custom swingarm frame, Andreas Bergerforth and the dedicated team at Thunderbike have cemented their reputation as being among the world’s foremost motorcycle customizers, following up on their multiple European Championship wins and World Championship top-five placings.

Their work received widespread acclaim for its attention detail, originality, quality of execution and design harmony, beating off stiff competition from a field of top quality examples of custom motorcycle craftsmanship from all over the world.

Thunderbike have made a double-dose of custom motorcycle industry history at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this year – not only are they the first authorized Harley-Davidson dealer to take home the ultimate accolade for their work, but they are the first customizers from Germany to take top honors at the AMD World Championship.

CRANE CAMS introduces Chris “Rocket” Rivas signature series cams at Sturgis–
If you’re looking for someone to make your bike go fast, you want to find the guy who knows how it’s done. You want someone who has proven that they have the expertise to make their own bike a winner. That’s why Crane Cams teamed up with Chris “Rocket” Rivas of Chris Rivas V-Twin in Fresno, California to design two new bolt-in cams for late model, 2007 and later Harley-Davidson® big twins.

S&S is the primary distributor of Crane Cams motorcycle products and is excited that Crane Cams is introducing the Chris Rivas Signature Series Rocket cams at the 2012 Black Hills Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, SD. The Crane display is on Lazelle St. between 5th and 6th streets. Stop in and talk to the Crane guys about the Chris Rivas Rocket cams and check out the whole Crane line of quality valve train and ignition products for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Chris and the team at Crane came up with a couple of cams that will wake up just about any engine. The Rocket 574 is a bolt-in cam set for stock or big bore engines with stock heads. The 584 cams are intended for larger engines with ported heads and higher compression, but the moderate lift makes it compatible with stock valve springs. Both Chris Rivas Signature Series cams feature a distinctive black oxide finish and the patented S&S Easy Start* centrifugal compression release system to save wear and tear on your starter.

Chris talks about Crane and his new cam designs. “These cams were designed with cylinder pressure in mind, what I’ve learned at the highest level of racing and engine building is that if we can keep cylinder pressure high we can accomplish more than average amounts of mid-range power. Crane Cams is legendary for their performance in the auto industry and I know that everyone from professional engine builders to weekend warriors will enjoy the power gains with this new line of cams.”

As with all cam changes, a performance intake, exhaust system, and EFI tuning are a must to get the full benefit from the cams.

In a few weeks Chris will be taking his Crane Cams® equipped bagger to the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials at the Bonneville Speedway near Wendover, Utah, to improve his already impressive record. He’s going to take a crack at another World’s Fastest Bagger prize and break the 200 mph barrier at the same time. He’s only one mph away from it right now.

Morgan Hill, CA. Beach Racing Facility

Sat. the 21st, 19 days ago arrived in Morgan Hill with a nearly completed race bike? Thought so for a minute or two anyway. Then reality hit like a ton of soggy tomatoes, we have a small mountain to climb on the way to the salt flats.

With Brad’s help we enlisted the help of Pegasus Performance on the 25th, their located 5 minutes from the shop. The men at Pegasus are machining critical pieces for the air plenum, plus a few precision mounting brackets. We expect delivery any day now.

http://www.corbin.com

Our next stop, late last week was the magic shop belonging to Mike Corbin. Mike’s Magicians, headed up by Vince in the R&D Dept. dove in head first last Thursday with a goal in mind. Get this old guy out of here as fast as possible. Looks like this afternoon we pick up the hot rod minus the body work.

http://www.airtech-streamlining.com

The crew at Corbin will finish the body work, paint, stripe and cover the seat during the next few days while Brad and I attack the hot rods wiring, oil, gas, brake and air systems.

http://www.spykeinc.com

We expect delivery of a Spyke starter and a charging system this week?

After all goes as planned we will load the nearly ready to fire (will need the fuel system tied in) and head for Corbin’s next Wednesday morning to meet with the crew and mount the body work. With just a little luck Mike Corbin will be in town. We’ll get a few photos of the Corbin Crew to share with the world.

BONNEVILLE SCRAMBLE—Just as we find the perfect travel van vehicle, the damn trailer disappears. I’m now in search of an open trailer capable of hauling three bikes and some gear. I’m thinking a landscaping trailer might be perfect. Most motorcycle trailers are only set up for two motorcycles.

Anyway, I should have my paint back this weekend and I will be scrambling to assemble the bike. I’m tempted to take the wheels over to Nates and have them shaved. And someone tossed the gauntlet on the table to meet regarding a new TV series on Saturday. What the hell? We are scrambling to finish this bike, find a trailer, then have a sushi lunch?

Have a helluva weekend, and we’ll get back to you with more Sturgis reports in the Sunday Post. Wish us luck.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
