Board Track Racing On The Banked New Smyrna Speedway
Sons Of Speed founded by Billy Lane in 2017 continues to grow year after year.
It’s not surprising to me, as it is a thrill to see the stripped-down 20th century board track racing motorcycles restored and rebuilt doing it at the New Smyrna Speedway steeply banked track.
The pre-1950 Â V-Twin American motorcycles hit speeds of up to 80 miles an hour.
There are numerous classes bikes compete in, so each class groups engines of the same size.
Men and women race together in various classes, but the guys always seem to avoid pink flatheads…
I think once you see one of these races you will become a fan too.
Tickets are available for the bleachers, infield and even a VIP section
This wild, historic event included stunt riders and some student built race cars
There were a lot of new racers this year, and I try to meet as many of the contestants as I could.

Saw some old friends like Shelly Rossmeyer who had a new motorcycle and rode in two classes.

There was a mishap when reportedly the throttle stuck wide open on Carey Maynell’s ride coming out of the paddock while riders were being staged for a heat. He missed the other riders, and he crashed off the bank divider off of turn one.
The motorcycle caught fire on the track and medical crews jumped into action and did what they were trained to do, until Carey was airlifted to a local hospital for observation.
I have been told he is awake and alert. Prayers continue for his quick recovery
