SIZZLING PRE-HOLIDAYS THURSDAY NEWS

Hey,

Another wild day in paradise. The world is still upside down. The economy still sucks, but I swear the SEMA show was actively up from an attendence standpoint. The booths were down about 10 percent, but that just meant a tad less walking. The European attendance was strong as we rapidly roll toward a global economy.

Ray C. Wheeler and I returned tired but energized. We ran into old friends, and had secret meetings in empty hotels. In fact the most amazing product of the show was not on display in a high dollar booth, held by a gorgeous female in a skin-tight outfit. It was pulled quietly from an old tattered leather briefcase and unwrapped from an old shop rag. Nace Panzica handed it to me over a dark corner booth in the back of an empty restaurant.

The new throttle body was black anodized and didn’t have a standard butterfly. Across from me sat Duncan Keller. He sported a long gray ponytail and was the contact with the inventor. He smiled profusely and discussed the technology that will be unveiled at the Easyrider V-Twin Show in February. Nace looked pensive. He was the man gambling resources on the project.

Beside me sat Lee Chaffin, the master of Mikuni Carbs for the last two decades. He knows the air intake business from the bottom up, and offered vast insights. You will see much more on this new high performance product, under the Yankee Enginuity name in the very near future on Bikernet, through Ray’s reports, tech articles with Bennett’s performance, and Branch/O’Keefe. Hang on. This puppy will rock the world.

I’ll run Ray’s Performance Report first. Let’s see what he has to say.

BIKERNET PERFORMANCE REPORT, WOW! SIN CITY!
ONE MORE TIME! JACKPOT, on the way out of town–
The week started with a balmy, late afternoon Jet Blue hop to Sin City from a cool ass airport in Long Beach. About 15 minutes before landing, we spotted the bright lights of Sin City from a small, window seat porthole in the side of our magnificent flying machine.

It took longer to get from the airport, in a crowded shuttle bus, through the city streets of downtown Las Vegas to the front door of the Palace Station, than the flying time from the sunny west coast. The taxi drivers, dealers, coffee shops, pimps, and hookers may be a few of the only employed left in town. Some 70% of the mortgages are up side down with an unemployment rate of 27% (unofficially).

Once in Las Vegas at the show and wading knee deep through the rolled out, plush carpets on the floor in between endless rows of remarkable shit on display by 2,000 vendors and hawkers at the SEAM show.

The long legged Bandit stretched out and blazed a trail that was hard to keep up with at times, while attending the show at the Vegas Convention Center. We handled and eye balled a TOP SECRET throttle body that is soon to be released and it’s amazing. This was my first year attending the event and it was packed from wall to wall, even though the event vendors may have been down by as much as 200 this year.

We had the pleasure and opportunity to meet with the owners and sales team of Vee Rubber. They brought the latest in tall-front-tire w/whitewalls technology from Thailand. At Bikernet we will run road tests in the near future with full reports from a riders eye.

Ran into an amazing guy a couple years ago at Bonneville that was behind the wheel of a land speed racing Mustang that set a record on the last day of the meet. This Tuesday morning in between meetings at the SEMA show I spent quite a few minutes with Danny Thompson.

Danny Thompson, son of slain race car driver Mickey Thompson, and an accomplished racer and innovator in his own right, will present the details of his plans to complete the restoration of his fathers’ Challenger 2.5, building the fastest piston-powered car in the world. Thompson plans to exceed the existing internal combustion wheel-driven land speed record of 417.020 mph with a goal of more than 420 mph by the summer of 2012.
The Challenger 2 was Mickey Thompson’s innovative design to achieve his dream of building the fastest piston-powered car in the world. The fully restored vehicle in the form of the Challenger 2.5 using custom-designed Mickey Thompson tires represents Danny Thompson’s unfailing dedication to fulfill his father’s dream, honor his father’s memory and make motorsports history.

5-Ball Racing Projects

My Daily Rider 97-inch Twin Cam Project

Eric Bennett of Bennett’s Performance on Signal Hill sent the piston, rings and piston pin weights necessary to build and balance the lower end, to John at Darkhorse Crankworks in Newton, Wi. John is handling the bulletproof lower end assembly and balancing act. We are going to test the new Rev Tech, big bore, 97-inch Twin Cam, cylinder, and piston kit.

Eric and his crew will top off the 97-inch hot rod with a set of built-to-the-max Branch/O’Keefe Heads and a soon to be released, TOP SECRET THROTTLE BODY that is a mind blower.

Imagine a throttle body with zero obstructions in the bore. It has my vote for the “HOTTEST New Product” at the upcoming Cincinnati V- Twin show.
Time will tell and it’s the only product I’ve seen so far. You’ll see it first on Bikernet.com.

Bonneville 2012
45 “Bonne Belle”

More “Bonne Belle” parts have arrived from motor builder, Lee Clemens, of Departure Bike Works, in Virginia for the 2012 sexiest-45-on-the-salt-build. A killer frame that Ron Paugh and his crew at Paughco hand built to Bandit’s, design teams specs will carry the vintage engine and a late model 5-speed transmission. Looks like a little stretch and a little more rake at a glance, what a beauty.

Nicole, our pilot that runs a first class, badass tattoo parlor and resides in Australia will pilot the hot 45 to the limit in her quest for speed.

Just a few more parts, a clear lift and we launch the build.

Stay tuned, we’re just gettin warmed up in low gear.

BAD COP FILES NOW OPEN, Sweeping internal NYPD probe results in 16 arrests– An anonymous tip about a crooked cop grew during the past three years into a sweeping internal corruption probe on the under-the-table practice of fixing tickets, with dozens of wiretaps, 10,000 intercepted calls and an officer undercover as a barber in a sting, authorities said.

Thirteen New York Police Department officers, two sergeants and a lieutenant were slapped with criminal charges Friday, just three days after the embarrassing arrests of five officers in a separate gun-running probe.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said it was “difficult” to have to announce for the second time in a week that his officers had been arrested for misconduct.

“These misdeeds tarnish the good name and reputation of the vast majority of police officers who perform their duties honestly,” he said.

Kelly said the probe included 300 cases that are being handled internally. Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said he hoped the criminal charges send a message that corruption would not be tolerated. The city lost about $2 million in killed-off tickets, he said.

The majority of the arrested are officials with the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, arguably the most powerful law enforcement union in the nation, with 23,000 members. Union leaders say the practice of making a ticket disappear for a friend or family member was not only sanctioned, it was condoned at the highest levels of the nation’s biggest police department.

Union President Patrick Lynch vowed that when the dust settled, they’d prove it.

“Taking care of your family, taking care of your friends is not a crime,” he said. “To take a courtesy and turn it into a crime is wrong.”

Hundreds of union members went to support the officers, some in suits, others dressed in jeans and sweat shirts, clogging the street near the Bronx courthouse, filling the hallways and applauding in court after the officers left. Detective Steven McDonald, a city hero paralyzed decades ago, was in the courtroom in a wheelchair, with an American flag on this lap.

The officers pleaded not guilty to hundreds of charges including misconduct, grand larceny, records tampering and obstructing governmental administration. Among those charged was Jennara Cobb, an internal affairs bureau lieutenant who pleaded not guilty to charges she leaked information to union officials about the probe.

THE KRYLON JOHN DOCTRINE–  Krylon John predicts: “In the near future computerized robots hung with giant hydro-pneumatic genitalia will rape female human bi-peds and produce a humanoid species that will take over the earth.”

The world is changing and how to make a living in it is changing even faster. First, we saw the music industry take a big dump and then it was followed with professional actors being replaced by amateurs on TV. For anyone that makes a living as photojournalist, in particular as a writer this really isn’t good news. I read the following story in the October 2011, autowriters.com newsletter.

“A new computer program that writes news stories may find itself dueling with a new computer program that detects fake stories. Or, they may learn from each other. Steve Lohr, writing in The New York Times, describes the new writing program developed by Narrative Science in conjunction with Northwestern University. Stories produced by the program have won praise from experts in artificial intelligence and language as well as journalists and, so far has attracted, 20 customers including The Big Ten Network and a construction industry trade publisher.

The latter uses Narrative Science to provide 500-word monthly trend reports on more than 350 local housing markets. (The bad news for writers is that they are produced for $10 each.). Researchers at Cornell University developed the fake story detection program. Eric Smalley writes in CNET News’ Crave Blog, “the Cornell software learns to spot the type of language people use when they’re being deceptive in writing a review,” said Myle Ott, the Cornell computer science graduate student who led the research.

Applying the same technique to robot-written stories could accelerate the development of both programs. Computers teaching computers and multiplying capacity to think until they reach and exceed the 100 billion neurons in the human brain will be when – for those who believe in it – the world reaches the Nirvana of Singularity. As described by Ashlee Vance in The New York Times, Singularity is, “a time, possibly just a couple decades from now, when a superior intelligence will dominate and life will take on an altered form that we can’t predict or comprehend in our current, limited state.

At that point, the Singularity holds, human beings and machines will so effortlessly and elegantly merge that poor health, the ravages of old age and even death itself will all be things of the past.” That’s the Silicon Valley version where Singularity University is located. In Amsterdam that outcome is matched with concerns about possible dire consequences of the Singularity, nothing small, like totally reshaping the communications industry, how about like destroying the solar system! The advice from there as computers get more and more powerful, “We must guard against passivity among smart people who stop solving problems while they are waiting for ‘the rapture of the nerds’.”

BIKERNET ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM REPORT–Worse than Jersey: California cracks down on thefts of restaurant grease In California, grease is the word: Agriculture officials are cracking down on thieves who steal restaurant grease. Or, as we like to call it, Grand Lard Larceny!

Cops are staking out areas where restaurants leave out used kitchen grease. It’s supposed to be picked up by rendering facilities, but it’s being swiped by the Crisco Kids.

Why? Because the grease can be converted into fuel for diesel cars and trucks, and the high cost of diesel fuel has made the drippings a valuable commodity.

(Just asking: Does Ed Begley Jr. have an alibi?)

The state Food and Agriculture Department regulates grease transport, and it says it will pay for the Grease Police by using a fee paid by rendering companies.

(Also asking: Is this how Michele Bachmann plans to drive gas prices down to $2 a gallon?)

In New Jersey, where the average cholesterol count looks like Robinson Cano’s batting average, we don’t have to steal grease. We get plenty from the food trucks. (Or we just wring out Munchmobile napkins.)

The first crackdown is happening in Southern California, and the location is a secret. But, if we were the cops and had to pick a place, we’d choose the one with the best double cheeseburgers. Just sayin’?…

SALT SHAKER UPDATE– We discovered a loose pinion nut in the cam case, which caused the key to shear, the distributor to stop turning, the valves to stop, since the cam wasn’t moving, but unfortunately the pistons keep rolling up and down in the cylinders, which can damage the valves.

We ended up building a new distributor with an Accurate Engineering body and a Dyna S system for a single fire/dual plug operation. But it still wouldn’t run correctly, kept firing back. Dr. Willie came over and ran a compression test. We found that one cylinder indicated 25 pounds of pressure less than the front cylinder, but the battery was straining.

I was bummed but out numbered. The heads had to come off. After a shitty first half of Sunday Night Football, I stumbled back into the shop and tore the heads off the Salt Shaker. They were fine. Now what?

A Reader Comment:

Well, I would use a scope if you have one. A differential pressure tester would be a good tool to use…the air leak should point you in the right direction. The tool from Jim’s is nice, but you can get one a lot cheaper through an aircraft tool supply company…the orifice will need to be sized to the engine bore..or you can just use an old hollowed out spark plug to see where the leak down is coming from. A comp test with the release closed and then open should tell you something about the realeases. I don’t recall if they are manual or automatic.

BIKERNET BARMAID GETS OUT OF HAND–A BARMAID who threw a wet tampon at a McDonald’s worker “for a laugh” says the drunken prank has ruined her life.

Rebecca Leigh Crimmins, who pleaded guilty to common assault in the Noosa Magistrates Court, said she had “pretty much lost everything” since the tampon-tossing incident in the early hours of September 25.

She accused some people of over-reacting to the incident.

The court last week heard a drunk Ms Crimmins had dabbed a McDonald’s worker’s hand with a wet tampon, before throwing it at him, when she went through the restaurant’s drive-through at Noosaville.

The confessed “27-year-old hooligan” said the tampon was only wet with cordial.

The promotional model, who was sacked from the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club over the incident, said the fast-food staff had “made a mountain out of a molehill”.

“When the police came around, I thought ‘you’ve got to be kidding’,” she said.

But victim Luke Clareburt said he was shocked by the incident. “I didn’t know what was on the tampon,” he said.

“She deserves everything she gets. She’s got no one to blame but herself.”

Ms Crimmins, originally from Rockhampton, said people needed to “lighten up”.

“All my friends think it’s hilarious,” she said. “My parents have been answering the phone saying ‘hello, tampon tossers’.

“I have fun but I’m not a bad person.”

THE MYTH BUSTERS VS. MOTORCYCLES–Fellas, we have to change the dialogue and the semantics (wording) if were going to get anywhere. Here’s a show discussing which is worse, cars or motorcycles. I say “neither.” why is the question even in the lexicon? The lefties in the press have made it mandatory that we compare “any/everything” in our existence (if at all possible, get congress involved) there is the big question mark, good, or bad?

We’re always trying to determine its goodness or, badness. Whatda fuck! How did it ever get like this? It doesn’t matter whether it’s cars, motorcycles, butter, guns, salt, wine, gasoline/oil, cholesterol, football, lumbering/mining, prime rib, cell phones, roughing the kicker, shampoo, Styrofoam, breathing, or water????? The list goes on and on. There’s always something wrong with something or everything. America has become a bunch of neurotic screwballs. Life is dangerous…….

MUDFLAP GIRL BIKE SHOCKS–After we installed Progressive Shocks and set up the fender position, the bike settled until the fender was dangerously close to the tire. I started a dialog with David Zelma, of Progressing. Here’s some of his thoughts.

Assuming the geometry of the bike is based on an early 90’s FXR, the bike would have used a 13″ E2E shock (part# 430-4008B)

Extended length: 13.00″

Closed length: 9.38″ (plus 1/2″ rubber bumper)

Spring rate: 75/120

Seems like closed length is pretty far off of what you need.

THE EDITOR PICKED UP TERRY THE TRAMP–  Between the five minutes that she spent at the house in between the Texas trip and the Dubai trip, she at least got to see the cover! But on the other hand, I’ve been reading it!!!!

I’ll be submitting the review in about a week or so…great stuff, Keith!!!! Right off the bat I loved the way you began things with an honest assessment of where Terry is now (I kept thinking, if only William Morrow/HarperCollins had just waited a few months on the Doc Cavasos book and had you write it, it would be a viable work instead of an essentially irrelevant paperweight!).

The beginning of Terry… was perfect…a great tone was set!!! And, as always, it’s so great to see the kind of writing that doesn’t “speak down” in any way to the audience. The love and respect in this book goes far beyond its immediate subject matter!!!

This also gives us the opportunity once a year to reach out to our readers and include them in voting to give credit to the people who make up our industries’ leaders.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON HONORS ACTIVE AND RETIRED MILITARY AT HOME AND ABROAD FOR MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH–
Company Teams with USO to Provide Care Packages to Soldiers
MILWAUKEE, Nov. 1, 2011 – Harley-Davidson Motor Company will celebrate Military Appreciation Month once again this November with a number of efforts to show its support and gratitude for the men and women in the military. One way the company will do that is by teaming up with the United Service Organizations (USO).

Harley-Davidson will welcome donations at its nearly 650 dealerships throughout the country on behalf of the USO Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. The donations will be used to assemble care packages for troops overseas. The company is also challenging its U.S. Harley Owners Group chapters to raise $500 each for the Operation USO Care Package program.

“We’re honored to support such a well-respected organization as part of our military appreciation efforts this year,” said Mike McCann, Director of Core Customer and Military Marketing for Harley-Davidson. “We want to show our support for those living away from home and protecting our country.”

In addition to supporting the USO through care package donations, Harley-Davidson is celebrating Military Appreciation Month by hosting a military-only concert by the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in San Diego on Thursday, Dec. 1, where nearly all of the tickets will be given to select soldiers at nearby bases. For one lucky military winner and a guest, Harley-Davidson will provide a full VIP experience for the concert, including travel to San Diego, dinner and a motorcycle ride from Los Angeles to San Diego with the band. Entries for the contest will be accepted online through Nov. 15.

At the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, all current and previous military members and their immediate families (one additional adult and up to four children under age 18) will receive free admission on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6.

Finally, Harley-Davidson’s support of the USO will extend through the end of next year. Every care package distributed by the USO in 2012 will include a pair of tickets to the Harley-Davidson Museum – approximately 250,000 tickets in total.

“We’re incredibly grateful for Harley-Davidson’s support of our efforts to lift the spirits of our brave men and women serving overseas by providing them with care packages that, among other things, offer a touch of home and a way to connect with their families,” said USO Sr. VP and Chief Development Officer Kelli Seely. “Like the USO, Harley- Davidson has a long history of supporting U.S. troops, so we are proud of this new partnership and know together we will have a great impact on our troops in the coming year.”

Harley-Davidson’s history with the U.S. military dates to World War I and World War II.

Today Harley-Davidson supports U.S. military personnel through programs like Harley’s Heroes. In 2007, The Harley-Davidson Foundation made its first $1 million grant to Disabled American Veterans to support its Mobile Service Offices that travel throughout the U.S. to provide counseling and assistance to help veterans and their families secure the benefits they earned through their service. The program has become known as Harley’s Heroes. Last year, the Foundation made a second $1 million grant to continue its support of the program.

Harley-Davidson also recently sponsored three tours of Bikes Over Baghdad, which brought a team of the biggest names in action sports to bases in Iraq, Kuwait and other parts of the Middle East to perform BMX shows for thousands of troops. For two of the three tours, Harley-Davidson sent one of its own employees along to show the company’s personal gratitude.

For more about Harley-Davidson’s Military Appreciation Month activities and the company’s longstanding commitment to the U.S. military, visit www.harley-davidson.com/military

CLASSICS FROM DENCO–  Bandit, here are a few old timers we are working on at the shop. Thought you’d get a kick out of them for nostalgia sake. The shovel is a 1966, mostly original parts. The knuck is a 1942, were trying to build a period style race bike with the idea that the guy would ride it all week and race on weekends.

Some cool projects at the shop right now, were doing a trike for a friend of mine in a chair. Some really cool FXR stuff also. We finished the street strip bike we were building when we talked last, I have some good pics of that build if you are interested in seeing them.

How did your FXR’s turn out, did you get them done in time to ride them to Sturgis?
Hope all is well, thanks again for running the Harmon article for us, we had quite a bit of feedback on that.

The first does a total makeover. She goes to a fancy beauty salon, gets her hair done, new makeup; buys several new outfits and dresses up very nicely for the man. She tells him that she has done this to be more attractive for him because she loves him so much.

The man was impressed.

The second goes shopping to buy the man gifts. She gets him a new set of golf clubs, some new gizmos for his computer, and some expensive clothes. As she presents these gifts, she tells him that she has spent all the money on him because she loves him so much..

Again, the man is impressed.

The third invests the money in the stock market She earns several times the $5,000. She gives him back his $5,000 and reinvests the remainder in a joint account. She tells him that she wants to save for their future because she loves him so much.

Obviously, the man was impressed.

The man thought for a long time about what each woman had done with the money he’d given her.

Then he married the one with the biggest tits.

THE UNCLE MONKEY TIRE CONTROVERSY–  How big do you want to go? A few years back fat tires were where it was. The massive 200mm had many shaking their heads in disbelief. Then came 240..250…300…330… the sky was the limit.

Recently big tires have spread to the front but instead of width they are growing upwards. The most popular sizing now is 26-INCH. At a full ten more inches in diameter they leave lots of room for glitter and shine. But that’s not the top, 30-INCH is the largest now, at least for the brief moment writing this.

Holy 30-inchers are impressive wheels much like the massive 330 hauling up the rear and riders with thick wallets are lining up to order theirs. Fat tires were popular, so popular in fact that Harley produced their own fat tire 250 bike called the Rocker. Harley has since dropped the line much like many riders. Once dime a dozen fat tire bikes have faded from glory. Most riders today anchor the back with a 200 but even more are sticking with 150/160/180 range.

Quick, nimble, cheap and adequate they provide everything we as riders could need. But what about the 30-inch on the front? Impressive – yes, expensive – yes, practical – well… Many riders favoured the ride of the Heritage over the Custom Softail because of the ride that the fat 16-inch rim offered on the front. The same tire that was standard on the front of touring bikes. They were built for the long haul in mind. Thick sidewalls helped soak up the bumps and a wide tread helped track the highways of this great nation.

So what about the future of big inch front tires? The smart money will be that they will come and go much like the 300+ rear. Will we return to 16-inch wheels all around? Maybe, but the factory has been inching up to 18-inch so the day may come when a 21 will be the normal on baggers but in a wider format than the skinny tires of the FXSTC.

Where do I stand in all this madness? The Softail I’m building is a modest 200mm with a 21-inch front but I’m thinking about how sick a 30-inch on a slammed RoadGlide would be. My wife pokes me in the ribs and reminds me “one bike at a time.”

MORE RED-LIGHT-CAMERA TICKETS ISSUED DURING BIKETOBERFEST– DAYTONA BEACH — The four days of Biketoberfest earlier this month brought choppers, chrome and loud pipes — and also an increase in red-light camera tickets.
The cameras at intersections along Nova Road, U.S. 1 and other major roads around the city recorded nearly 300 more violations during the four-day biker event than the same time frame before and since. There may have been more, which would have been understandable with 125,000 bikers in town, but not all the plates on the motorcycles could be read by the cameras.

“There were some plates that were difficult to read,” Sgt. Joe Heller, who oversees the city’s traffic safety program, said Thursday. “If we don’t know (the tag number), we reject them.”

Six people were killed in motorcycle related crashes this year. Heller said although there were more red-light camera tickets issued during the event that ran Oct. 13-16, it wasn’t clear how many of those were motorcycles.
Generally, Heller said, the leather-clad visitors for Biketoberfest and the larger Bike Week in late winter are “very respectful of the law.”

“I find the people here for the motorcycle events to be very compliant,” Heller said. For the most part, he said, the people on motorcycles use care to avoid injury to themselves.

He offered no explanation for the reason behind the increase, which went from 115 violations in the Thursday through Sunday period ending Oct. 9 to 396 during the Biketoberfest event. The number of violations Oct. 20-23 was 137.
Since the red-light camera program began earlier this year, many motorists have voiced disapproval.

For violators, notices of violation appear in white envelopes from a processing center in New York.

The tickets show a picture of the license plate of the offending vehicle and the time and location of violation. People can either pay a $158 fine within 30 days or choose to fight the ticket, a process that can become costly.

Critics of red-light cameras say they are merely moneymakers and violate people’s constitutional rights, while Heller and other law enforcement officials say the surveillance is intended to improve safety.

“I think it’s really been beneficial,” Heller said.

In neighboring Holly Hill, Police Chief Mark Barker said his department has seen about 40 percent fewer crashes in intersections where red-light cameras have been added.
During special events since the cameras were added, he said his city hasn’t noticed any increase in traffic violations at the camera-monitored intersection.

BIKERNET BOOK REVIEW: Terry The Tramp: The Life and Dangerous Times of a One Percenter

Most 1%’er Motorcycle Club books are written by law enforcement types who have infiltrated clubs in order to make arrests and take those criminals down, by God! Other 1%’er books are written by club insiders by themselves with the help of a ghost writer. Terry The Tramp: The Life and Dangerous Times of a One Percenter falls into the latter with a twist. This 1%’er book is crafted by none other than all around motorcycle expert K. Randall Ball, otherwise known as Bandit of Bikernet.com.

The preface alone is worth the price of admission and tells the history of the modern motorcycle industry that began after WW2 and its effect on society. Ball chronicles the story of Terry ‘The Tramp” Orendorf and the Vagos Motorcycle Club in a gripping and realistic manner. Several times I had to put the book down and take several deep breaths or an even longer break of a day or two before I could pick it up again.

The core subject of this book is freedom. The word freedom is easily thrown around, but what does it really mean? This country is sold to the rest of the world as a beacon of freedom and hope. Freedom is still the word associated with the idea of the United States of America.

Terry the Tramp is a familiar tale of a group of like minded motorcycle enthusiasts banding together against the world and pursuing their version of freedom. Not just the idea of freedom, but the active living breathing choice of being a free man. The price paid was enormous. Run ins with other clubs and the law ultimately forced the one percenters to band together as a group in brotherhood against the law in order to survive.

All told, Terry the Tramp is a great rollercoaster ride of a book based on the true life adventures of Terry Orendorf of the Vagos M/C as told to someone who lived the life

and also survived the ride.

ABOUT THE FEDS TAKING OVER THE INTERNET–Sorry for my long silence on this. We had a snowstorm Saturday and knocked out power for more than 300,000 homes and businesses in Mass. Our power just came back on yesterday. We had to rely on old-fashioned traditions. With no internet porn, I dug out old Penthouses and Hustlers. Print is far more reliable.

Now about the FCC and the feds taking over the internet, the email below is from 2010, and it’s kind of ass backwards. This is not my area of expertise, so I talked to a couple of writers who cover this kind of thing. So don’t take what I say this as gospel. I’m sure I’ve messed up a bunch of the facts and concepts.

One thing is right. The FCC and other feds are in favor of Net Neutrality, and the big access providers–Comcast, Verizon, etc.–are very much against it. I suspect in the final analysis that even though many Republicans are standing with Comcast et al against neutrality, it’s probably in your best interest. (Let’s just use “Comcast” to stand for all the big corporate providers.) Let me first say that Comcast and buddies do not own the internet. They did not create the internet anymore than Al Gore did. Omni, for instance, was on the internet, called Darpanet back then, in 1981. The World Wide Web was created by physicists at CERN, the accelerator laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. Comcast acts as if it owns the internet, but they had nothing to do with it. They simply hook you up to it, and furnish relay stations for the signals. You could do it like we did at Omni, but it’s more convenient to use one of the big providers that have fiberoptics and broad band capabilities. Comcast pretty much has a monopoly where I live.

If Comcast etc does nothing special, just relays you the signals, you will get the ENTIRE internet, to pick and choose from. This is how the FCC wants it. You should get what you want, not what Comcast wants you to get. Comcast wants instead to do two things: set up different levels of service. Premium expensive service will get you the whole internet. Then there will be lower, cheaper levels. But here’s the thing. To give you premium service Comcast has to do absolutely nothing. For the cheaper services, it has to set up filters to filter out much of the internet. It’s nuts, and the FCC doesn’t want Comcast to do this.

The scarier part of the scheme is that Comcast doesn’t want you to get some signals. Let’s say Comcast buys a publishing company that has motorcycle magazines. Bye bye Easyriders website. You be fucked. This is precisely what Comcast has been trying to do to Netflix. Lots of people stream movies from Netflix on the internet. Comcast wants to offer a competitive service and filter out Netflix. The FCC doesn’t want them to restrict competition.

The third thing to be accomplished is to restrict political and religious interchanges and information, and to rid the internet of pornography and nudity. Grassfire, for instance, the group listed here, is an infamous anti-porn, anti-abortion group. It is an “Astroturf” group. A well funded organization–it has its own ad agency–that pretends to be a grass roots movement. It’s been around for years. I don’t know if it’s funded by Comcast and its buddies or not. But if the group gets its way, again, bye bye Paisano.com and much of what we enjoy about the internet. Comcast will also keep political ideas it doesn’t like off your computer. Bye bye Libertarians

Anyway, that’s partially what net neutrality is all about. Maybe there’s something good about limiting the internet, but I don’t know what it would be.

–Dick Teresi

ERIC HERRMANN STUDIOS ART FOR XMAS–Dangerous’ my cult classic is 11 years old and just about sold out. Only 60 litho prints are available from the original edition of 950,and a handful of Giclee prints. As a Christmas special to my clients on my mailing list, I’ll offer “Dangerous” at $200.00 (instead of $250.00) until December 1st 2011.

There are a half dozen ‘Dangerous’ road hazards hidden in this one including:
The trucks throwing rocks, cracks in the road, Chopper passing on a double yellow, Gal on the back of the chopper is entertaining the truck driver, a much younger me, following too close, a tornado across from a Nuclear plant reflected in the rear end, Chemical tanker approaching a hill…

Don’t wait if you’ve always wanted ‘Dangerous’. It will be gone by Christmas!

Custom paintings of your own Bike or Car range from $400.00. You don’t want to rush an artist, so send your photos in early for that special, one off Christmas present. This is the 5-Ball factory racer built by Bandit.

BIG-HEARTED BIKERS WORK IN CONCERT FOR A WORTHY CAUSE–GLENDALE, California – November 2, 2011 – Warm sunshine, hot music and an important cause lured more than 3,000 warm-hearted fans to America’s longest-running charity motorcycle event, when Love Ride 28 rolled into Castaic Lake on Sunday, October 23. The event topped $375,000 in pre-expense revenue this year, with proceeds going toward the fight against autism through Love Ride’s chosen charity, Autism Speaks.

“Once again, thousands of generous riders, sponsors and friends opened their hearts and wallets in the name of helping others,” said Love Ride founder Oliver Shokouh. “In a time when national, state and local budgets are severely strapped, these people are making a real difference.”

But the day was bittersweet as many attendees arrived to Castaic only to hear that fellow riders Romarino Zeri and Julie Cameron had lost their lives in an accident en route to the event. “We are deeply saddened by this news and send our heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Romarino and Julie,” said Shokouh.

Overall attendance was 3,000, without counting the hundreds of volunteers who donated their time to the cause. Although the tragic events took an emotional toll, Love Ride celebrities and participants pulled together for the cause. Featured artists Montgomery Gentry rocked the park with the energy of their unique brand of country music, bringing everyone to their feet. Preceding the legendary band were several performers, including Charlie Brechtel who paid tribute to Love Ride and the Sturgis Museum with an acoustic song he wrote, Time Bomb with a strong set of golden-era rock hits, and Sean Wiggins with an all-out performance that left the audience wanting more.

The solidarity among the biker community is the heart and soul of Love Ride; its motto has always been about giving to those less fortunate, recognizing there are needs in our community greater than our own.

SUPREME COURT OKS FUND “SWEEPS” TO BALANCE THE BUDGET– SPRINGFIELD — A recent Illinois Supreme Court ruling allows legislators and the governor to sweep money from special state funds and use it to bolster the state’s general fund, but Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration said it has no plans to do so in the next budget year.

Justices voted 6-1 last week that it was legal for then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich to sweep $1.2 million from the Cycle Rider Safety Training Fund after a 2004 law passed by lawmakers allowed him to do so.

The state transfers a percentage of motorcycle registration fees into the fund each year in order to provide a safety training program. In August, the fund held approximately $10.8 million, according to the court’s opinion, which was written by Justice Anne Burke.

ABATE of Illinois, a motorcyclist advocacy group, sued, arguing that the Cycle Rider Safety Training Fund, is an irrevocable private trust. The group argued that the fund might contain federal and private funds as well as state revenue and that it all became private once deposited.

The court disagreed, saying there was no evidence that private or federal money was deposited into the fund.

“Plaintiffs wrongly characterize the funds which enter the (fund) as private money,” Burke wrote. “It is undisputed that all of the monies in the (fund) have come from the legislative appropriation of a portion of the registration and licensing fees paid to the state by motorcyclists each year for the privilege of operating their motorcycles on the road of this state.

“Our legislature cannot create an irrevocable trust with public money.”

Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride dissented, saying he was not sure all of the money in the fund is from the state. The court has ruled previously that it is illegal to sweep federal funds out of special state funds for use in the state’s general fund, which is basically the checkbook out of which Illinois pays its bills.

“We simply do not know, based on the briefs and record in this case, whether the fund contains any private or federal moneys,” Kilbride wrote. “I believe this court is making a grave error in declaring that the sweeps were constitutional without additional fact-finding.”

An attorney for ABATE did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Sweeping special funds was a controversial way to deal with budget deficits during the Blagojevich administration. The court’s ruling, its first on the subject, opens the door to more such sweeps.

However, Kelly Kraft, budget spokeswoman for Gov. Pat Quinn, said the administration does not plan to employ sweeps to bolster the general fund. The state has borrowed money from the funds, but has to pay that back.

“There are not any fund sweeps in this budget,” Kraft said. “Governor Quinn has ended the practice of sweeping funds that began prior to him becoming governor. Governor Quinn is against fund sweeps and has worked to end the practice.”

ITALY MASTER BUILDERS--Italy announced their picks for representing builders in the International Competition hosted by Revolution Magazine in Laval, Canada on April 20-23, 2012. IMBBA will use (for the first time) its International Judging team members to carefully judge bikes that will be seen for the first time anywhere.

This is a first in motorcycle history where countries will come together to compete by selection rather than by chance. Each country has to select who they want as their reprehensive builder and, as previously stated, these builders must not professionally show the bikes they build. It must be kept secret and from public viewing until the day of the competition.

In doing so, the press that IMBBA is sponsoring to come to Canada in 2012 from each participating country will have the scoop! Said IMBBA International President, Jeff Starke. IMBBA Certified Builders regardless of country status are welcome to compete.

HOW OLDER GUYS PICK UP CHICKS–A truly touching story….I met a beautiful girl in the park the other evening.

There was an instant spark between us and she immediately dropped to her knees and laid on the grass at my feet.

As we lay making love, I thought :

“These Tasers are well worth the money”

MMA Announces results of 2011 Board of Director Elections–As announced in a previous communication to its active members, the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association’s Board of Directors met on October 5, 2011. This meeting was not only the monthly meeting of the board to conduct MMA business but also, in accordance with the MMA’s bylaws, annual October meetings are considered the annual meeting for the organization. One of the primary functions at the annual meeting is to elect members to scheduled vacancies on the Board. This announcement was Deferred while awaiting results of annual District elections conducted during the month of October for Representatives to the Board. The MMA is now pleased to announce the results of all elections.

In rotating 3-year terms, open for election were Chairman, Legislative Director, District 1 Manager, and District 4 Manager. Other positions, representing approximately 1/3 of the MMA Board are open for election in each of the 3 year cycle.

Re-Elected to 3 year terms were Dave Condon, MMA Chairman, Rick Gleason, Legislative Director, and Tanker Griswold, District 4 Manager. John Pecora was elected to his first term as District 1 Manager. John previously served the board as the District 1 Representative.

Richard Schofield declined nomination to be re-elected to the District 1 Manager’s position. Richard has served the MMA with distinction in many roles but chose to focus his energies on Veteran’s Affairs while remaining active in the MMA in a lesser capacity. MMA Vice Chairman, Doc D’Errico thanked Richard for his service, not only within the district, but for spearheading numerous state-wide events such as the annual Lacey Packer Toy Run and chairing several committees including the Elections Committee.

Prior to the elections, the sitting MMA Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Deb Perkins, District 3 Manager. Deb has served the board for a number of terms, but due to personal changes including moving outside the district, is unable to continue to fulfill the role. The Board unanimously extended their gratitude to Deb for her years of diligent service to the board. In a letter to Deb, MMA chairman, Dave Condon stated, “on behalf of the Board of Directors I wish to personally thank you for your service to the MMA and the riders of this State. Lots of riders talk about motorcycle rights, safety and education but very few step up to the level that you did and you are to be commended for that.” The vacancy leaves an opportunity for someone to join the MMA board representing Worcester County, the Commonwealth’s largest.

Election of District 3 Manager and Representative were deferred to allow for announcement and submission of candidates.

In related activities, the Board unanimously voted to create the position of Merchandise Manager to create more focus geared towards MMA membership. MMA Life Member, Laurie Horn was then elected to the position.

In separate elections held in each District, MMA District Representatives were elected by active members attending their respective District meetings in October. District 1 elected Middlesex County Rep Dana Melberg to move up to represent the District. District 2 elected Norfolk County member Bill Cheetham and District 4 re-elected Dallas Stuck to another term.

MMA Chairman Dave Condon noted, “stepping up to actively support Motorcyclists’ Rights is something we appreciate in our entire membership, but it clearly takes someone selfless to accept the tireless work of a MMA Officer or Board Member. The MMA is a 100% volunteer organization which makes it not only uniquely special, but amazing in what it’s achieved over the past 36 years. I’m extremely proud of what our current Board has accomplished over the past 3 years and look forward to continuing taking the MMA to new heights. I thank the outgoing Board and look forward to working with the newly elected Members!”

THERE YOU HAVE IT--All the news that’s fit to print, and I can jam in, in a 12-hour period, without going crazy. I want to slap the Salt Shaker back together, so Ray has something to ride, while Bennett’s Performance builds his replacement 97-inch Twin Cam.

I just received word that my engine MSO is coming from H-D, and I will begin the harried California Special Construction registration process. I’m going to work with Saddlemen on a special design, gel padded seat with air pockets, hopefully next week.

I’m so close to being ready for a ride, I can taste it. Then I’m going to wrap up my Son’s mudflap girl, so we can both ride.

Next week we will bring you Bikernet Betsy’s heartfelt Love Ride Coverage. And I’m going to spend some time on Frank’s Mudflap girl bike and install one of Mr. Lucky’s weld on kickstands, and write a tech. I have a feature coming from Tom Foster, and another one from the AFT crew of women builders. You’ll love this feature by Prince Najar.

In the meantime, have a helluva weekend.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
