BIKERNET SUNDAY POST – NEW WIDE TIRE KIT FROM BIG BOAR, MORE HELP NEEDED FOR KATRINA VICTIMS, COOL SHIT FROM MIL BLAIR AND MORE…

TITS IN FLORIDA

Hey,

It’s that treacherous Sunday, the anniversary of a day that changed our lives. We live in a very fast moving world and so many days change our lives. The day the internet was launched, the cell phone invented, Katrina ran ashore, etc. Tomorrow is another day, so hang on.

We’ve decided that 9/11 every year will be our disaster day to check supplies and readiness for any disaster. I’ll count my ammo and Sin will replace our disaster water supply, check for working fire extinguishers and first aid supplies.

This is a day to stand quietly and think about 9/11, Katrina and the future. Then pack up a box and send it south. We offer more disaster connections below. So let’s hit the news and move forward to clean up the mess and build for the future, drink margaritas and chase girls. What could be better:

Mils wild angel movie tank2

Hey, Mil Blair stumbled into the Bikernet Headquarter the other day and brought some historic shit. Mil owned Jammer Cycle and was a partner in Easyriders (Paisano Publications) for 20 some years. He helped build the ER Streamliner and designed parts for custom bikes for over shit, he’s still doing it, since 1969.

Mils sidemount license plate

He happens to own the above set of fatbob tanks from the movie “Wild Angels” made in 1966. Talk about a Digital Discovery. These tanks were painted by Wildman Von Dutch. Plus, Mil has all the remaining parts to this machine and might rebuild it in the near future. We’ll cover it on Bikernet, when he gets around to it.

Mils new softail frame

Right now he’s finishing the touches on a bitchin custom Fuel Injection system, that we will launch shortly. He also designed this hidden Softail frame and new Side mounted taillight, turnsignal and unit. Watch for more information on Bikernet or in the Cantina. Check the Digital Discovery Area for Movie info. Here’s the Wild Angel slogan:

Their credo is violence… Their God is hate…

By the way 60% of Entergy’s customer base has been restored with electricity, Jefferson Parish sherriff Harry Lee ( a long time Louisiana old school politician lawmaker has commandeered the local Wal-mart store under his jurisdiction. This after FEMA would not allow the store to re-open despite their being somewhat ready to function. Sheriff Lee said it is essential that persons on the West Bank of New Orleans have access to food and supplies. FEMA said the infrastructure is not ready yet for commerce. Sheriff Lee told them “Bullshit, the people are in place, they need the stores up and running”. The Plaquemines parish president has been working in the lower part of his flooded parish. His skin looks like a leper, the water is contaminated with oil and chemicals. He is has told his people wherever they are turn to those communities and do no plan on coming home in the near future. Reports on the French Quarter are amazing. It is high and dry. Johnny White’s bar is open and serving. Labor Day weekend a dozen gays paraded in the name of the Decadence Parade. It is an annual event that had 90,000 persons reserved to attend. Despite this humor, today in Washington parish 40 persons were found without water and food. They had been isolated since the storm. The first of the New Orleans National Guard returned from Iraq, no homes, no jobs and displaced family. Echos of the Nam vets. There is a sense of decency in all this though. People are kinder; there is the steady concern and a familiarity that only belongs to the South. The outcome? Who knows. For the present there is only the concern that all be taken care of. later friend…………..

Anson’s Book Recommendations

This past summer I read the James Lee Burke detective novel series. The main character is a Louisiana detective named David Robicheaux . Burke’s descriptive style of writing, and the character depth he explores makes for intense reading. Reminds me of your character “Chance”. I am sure your local library carries the series. Give http://jamesleeburke.com a look when you have a moment.

Katrina Report From New Orleans

I attempted to send this via READER’S SHOT without success. My family’s personal situation is fine, no problems. Hard to believe, as we live 50 miles from New Orleans. This is for those who don’t have it as good:

Bandit,

Thanks for Bikernet’s support of the Hurricane Katrina victims. The storm truly left many families homeless and without employment in this area. While the media focus was the fiasco at the Superdome the true story lies in the surrounding parishes and Miss. coast. The loss to working people and families is the true disaster. Louisiana and Miss comprise a large biker community. Despite what that Missouri gun nut wrote in a couple weeks ago to you, a sidearm is not necessary to ride thru this part of the South.

There are plenty of good caring people down here. For those who would point the finger and say we got what we deserved for living here let me remind you that: New Orleans operated the largest shipping port in the USA, Fourchon port controls 60% of the Gulf’s natural gas operation, the Venice deepwater production accounted for 20% of the domestic oil supply, Louisiana chemical plants are the major producers for the additives needed in gasoline for compliance with the various federal and state gasoline regulations.

While the efforts of FEMA and the various government agencies flounder it is the local communities that are taking back command of their situations and attempting to get their areas back together.

I would suggest that anyone donating money to the disaster effort do so through the RED CROSS or SALVATION ARMY. These two accountable agencies can be seen in the communities helping.

There are a multitude of relief accounts accepting cash donations. How effective they are is questionable. Stick to the two mentioned above and your dollar will do someone some good.

A longtime Bikernet supporter down on the bayou.

His road name is Murf. He is one of the charter members of our chapter here in Savannah. If it wasn’t for his tenacity and persistence our chapter might not have started and thrived. He’s a hella good guy. Always first to jump to be a road guard when we are riding, and has the true heart of being a big brother to everyone in the club.

Bikernet Brotherhood For The Down And Out

A wife comes home early from work one day only to find her husband in bed with a strange woman.

“That’s it!” she screams at him. “I’m leaving you and never coming > back.”

The husband says, “Don’t you at least want to hear my explanation?”

She shrugs and says, “Fine, let’s hear your story. But this won’t do you any good!”

He says, “Well, I’m driving along the street, when I see this young lady in torn clothes, no shoes, all muddy and crying. I took pity on her and asked if she would like to get cleaned up in my house. She climbed into my truck and I brought her home. She took a shower and I gave her the underwear that doesn’t fit you anymore, the silk blouse and slacks that I bought you two years ago that you wore once, the $150 Nike running shoes you bought and wore only twice. I even gave her some of the roast beef you had in the fridge, that you never touched last night..

Then I showed her to the door. She was so grateful for all these things she thanked me profusely. But then, just as she was about to leave, she turned around and asked me…….. “Is there anything else your wife doesn’t use anymore?”

Markcus Cuff shot the Sturgis Chop alongside the Wilmington, California, Alameda Corridor Railroad Tracks recently. Then I changed the seat springs, seat mounting and rear wheel gearing. Next I’m going to eliminate the internal throttle. The throttle sticks from time to time. Since I don’t have a kill switch, I need push pull throttles for safety. I’m also looking for a new set of S&S Shovelheads to repair weak, early spark plug holes. I keep pulling the threads out.

Rick’s Launches One-piece Wheels

BY THE TIME you read this, the presentation of new wheels from Rick’s Motorcycles should have taken place during European Bike Week at Lake Faak, Austria.

Three-piece wheels have been the standard method of manufacture at Rick’s for a long time and the designs have been used to enhance many top custom bikes. The new range marks a step forward (Rick’s refers to it as ‘a new generation’) as the new products are one-piece forgings. The wheels are launched with three designs available at present – ‘Seven Sins’, ‘Mike’ and ‘Rodder’.

wheels - sin

Seven Sins is a classic seven spoke design. It is forged from aluminum billet using heat and pressure. The basic shape is then CNC-machined, emphasising and detailing the spokes connecting rim and hub. The hub is adjustable to any width using Rick’s well-known adapter system where rings are added as necessary. The adapter rings are polished to a high finish to match the wheel.

The spokes meet the rim at an area of reduced diameter, corresponding to the well of a spoked wheel. The Mike ‘Cutout’ option dispenses with this additional area, leaving the rim as a wide, flat expanse of metal which is then highly polished. The additional work involved in the Cutout option means it is only available on request.

All wheels are listed in sizes 2.15 x 21, 4 x 18, 5.5 x 18, 8 x 18, 9 x 18 and 10.5 x 18. The 5.5 x 18 size will support a 200-series tire in a stock frame; the 10.5in rim can be fitted with a 280- or 300-series tire.

wheels - mike

This design – Mike – has been a popular part of the Rick’s range for some time. It is engineered to combine strength and light weight in a design suitable for a supersport street bike, but with a style that creates demand from custom builders. The one-piece forged manufacturing method offers a real weight-saving over the original three-piece design. The billets used for the forging are of aircraft specification aluminum. The CNC machining of the finished design depends on special tooling and a high degree of accuracy. Polishing and ultrasonic de-greasing are carried out on site at Rick’s.

wheels - rodder

Rodder is a five spoke design that successfully lends itself to several different styles of bike building, bobber to hi-tech or from chopper to low-rider. After forging the basic form with a combination of pressure and heat, the spokes are machined to include distinctive circular holes. As usual, the hub can be adjusted for width to fit various applications using Rick’s spacer ring system. Brake disks and pulley rotors are also available in a matching pattern.

KATRINA Rogue Report

Earlier I sent a note making y’all aware that ABATE of Louisianna is accepting funds to help fellow bikers effected by Hurricane Katrina in that state. I also contacted ABATE of Mississippi and received a reply informing me that we can help bikers in that state by sending money to ABATE to be used for those bikers in need. Mississippi suffered much damage from Hurricane Katrina, and right now it is a major undertaking just to locate fellow bikers and loved ones.

Please read the following message from Preacher of ABATE of Mississippi and help if you can.

–Rogue

First I would like to thank the people in Virginia Freedom Riders. It is with the help of people like you and your brothers and sisters that Mississippi will pull thru this catastrophe.

At this time ABATE of Mississippi is trying to locate those in need. With communications cut so much in Mississippi, that is a project in and of itself. If you wish to contribute, your group can do the same thing that Florida ABATE is doing.

As I am the Legislative Affairs Officer for ABATE of MS, just send a donation to Waterway Chapter, ABATE of MS c/o Preacher, 1590 Nita Lake Rd., Fulton, MS, which is my address.

I will then place the money in the Chapter treasury and will be able to help other, IN YOUR NAME OF COURSE, as we find them. Florida is doing this and I am the liaison to which others can also contribute. If you need to contact my State Director to verify this, contact Paul Rutledge at ripvanrut@aol.com. Again, I wish to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for caring and wishing to help.

A Note From Granny

I am very happy in the new residence you have put me in. This week we actually got to go outside for an hour.

I haven’t been feeling very good this week — the friend I shared a room with died yesterday. I am coping pretty well with my sorrows. It’s been six months since you’ve visited me last, I guess you’re all pretty busy. It’s OK, I’ve learned to use the Internet to pass the time. And the computer in the rec room has a pretty decent web cam.

So you can remember what I look like, I have attached a recent picture of myself. You all take care, and write to me soon.

With all of my heart.

Honda Builds AirBags For Bikes

TOKYO (Reuters) – Honda Motor Co. unveiled on Thursday the world’s first airbag system to be mounted on a production model motorcycle, with plans to offer it on the new Gold Wing touring bike to hit U.S. showrooms next spring.

The airbag module is built in between the bike’s handles and activates when four crash sensors detect a severe frontal collision, creating a buffer as the rider is flung forward on impact.

Honda, Japan’s third-biggest car maker and the world’s top motorcycle supplier, said the airbag would be effective in significantly reducing fatalities and serious injuries, citing data which shows that most occur during frontal collisions.

Honda will eventually offer the airbag option in Europe and Japan, Operating Officer Suguru Kanazawa told a news conference. The company declined to say how much the add-on would cost.

Officials said Honda aimed to offer the airbag on more motorcycles in future, but acknowledged a number of hurdles.

Because the airbag works by absorbing kinetic energy from the forward-flying rider, the motorcycle itself needs to be heavy enough not to tip over, throwing the driver over and past the deployed airbag.

The airbag also needs enough space to blow up safely in front of the rider, meaning the system can’t be mounted on a sporty bike where the driver leans forward into the handle.

Still, Chief Engineer Satoshi Iijima said having the airbag could mean the difference between life and death. While the system works best in a straight-angle frontal collision at up to 50 km (31 miles) an hour, the airbag can slow down the rider being thrown off at twice the speed, causing only a minor injury in an accident that would otherwise result in certain death.

Honda is at the forefront of vehicle safety technology, offering Japan’s first airbag in 1987 on the Legend high-end sedan. It began research and development on motorcycle airbags in 1990.

As part of its safety drive, Honda has also developed technology to warn motorcyclists of oncoming cars that are hidden from the rider’s view, and headlight designs that help others on the road better gauge the distance from the motorcycle.

Those technologies are not yet available on production models.

Mils Peashooter

MORE BIKERNET NEWS–You thought the Sunday post was finished. No so fast. The bike above is an example of a 1931 Peashooter or 30.50 single H-D. The Peashooter was a factory racing version of this model. That’s my next project. This bike belonged to Mil Blair and he helped me dig up a 1929 engine, which I will have modified to become a racing version. Next, I need to twist Cindy’s arm, from Century Motorcycles for a frame, and we?ll start rolling.

MANN ER LOGO WI JOE

Mil was also a collector of David Mann art from the Jammer Catalog era. I will soon post a number of images in the Digital Discovery area that will demonstrate the variety of bikes Dave Painted for Jammer Cycle in the ’70s.

lincoln left

We’re working on our Stinkin’ Lincoln and still hunting for a few sponsors. We have a DVD of race footage, if any prospective sponsors are interested. If you are interested in actually seeing the car, we’re planning a get together with a couple of the race cars at Shamrock Seafood at 120 W G St, Wilmington, CA 310-835-6671, next weekend. It will be held in the parking lot in the afternoon and I’ll bring the Sturgis Shovel. Stop on by. The Seafood is terrific and the beer is cold.

Since Johnny Boyd first twanged out Hot Rod Lincoln in 1960, and Commander Cody passed it to a new generation some 15 years later, it has been applied to everything from a primered Model A to the forgotten LSC coupe of the ’80s. But the real, honest Hot Rod Lincoln was actually a series of remarkably stock Lincoln Capri hardtops that pulled Ford out of a self-imposed exile from racing that had lasted more than 15 years.

It was a glorious return for Ford, as a factory Lincoln-Mercury team eventually rose to dominance in the “La Carrera Panamericana”, the fabled Mexican Road Race, the very last of the great long-distance competitions to be contested on public highways in North America.

We’re entered in this historic race from border to border in Mexico. Hang on for weekly reports. Come see the car if you’re in the LA region next weekend, 9/18 in the afternoon.

Ride forever,
