REDHEAD SUNDAY POST for July 22, 2018

Hey,

Another interesting day in Paradise. Friday and Saturday were destined to be welding and brazing days to finish my art piece for Sturgis Fly Piston Charity Breakfast Auction.

I asked the Redhead for complete silence during this time. Friday contained a solid 10 hours of welding without interruption and serious progress. I informed the Redhead of my dire intentions.

I worked out Saturday morning and promised to hit the shop around noon. At just that time the Redhead called. She giggled and told me about a club member who wanted to buy my van, that minute.

I had the calm state of mind to put off any transaction for an hour. I splashed water in my face and said, “This is all wrong.” I needed to stay focused. I put off the van dealing business and finished the art project.

Stay focused in the key. Let’s hit the news.

‘Good Morning, Vietnam’ DJ and Air Force Veteran Adrian Cronauer Dies at 79–
Stars and Stripes 19 Jul 2018

Many things in Robin Williams’ portrayal of DJ Adrian Cronauer in “Good Morning, Vietnam” weren’t really based on Cronauer. But that drawn-out “goooooood morning, Vietnam” was all Cronauer.
Cronauer, the Air Force veteran played by Robin Williams in the 1987 movie, died Wednesday. He was 79.

The 1987 movie, which Cronauer co-wrote, was loosely based on his life as an Armed Forces Network disc jockey for a year in Vietnam. But, as he said, it is a movie and Williams’ frenzied performance was not him.

“If I did half the things he did in that movie, I’d still be in Leavenworth and not England,” Cronauer told Stars and Stripes during a stop at RAF Mildenhall in 2004.
“No, I was not thrown out of Vietnam,” he said. “I did not have, as far as I knew, any friends who were Viet Cong.”

After serving in the Air Force, he owned an ad agency, managed a radio station, was an anchorman and program director in TV news, and was a voice actor for TV and radio commercials, according to his obituary. Later in life, he was special assistant to the director of the prisoners of war/missing in action office in the Pentagon, raising awareness of the effort to account for America’s missing. He lived in Troutville, Va.

His family asks that, in lieu of flowers, mourners make contributions to a veteran’s organization of their choice.

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY–

Damn fine Aussie explanation

The wife came home early and found her husband in their bedroom making love to a very attractive young woman. And she was somewhat upset.

‘You are a disrespectful pig’ she cried. ‘How dare you do this to me –a faithful wife, the mother of your children! I’m leaving you … I want a divorce right away!’

And the husband replied, ‘Hang on just a minute love so at least I can tell you what happened.’

‘Fine, go ahead,’ she sobbed,’ but they’ll be the last words you’ll say to me!’

And the husband began — ‘Well, I was getting into the car to drive home, and this young lady here asked me for a lift. She looked so down and out and defenseless that I took pity on her and let her into the car..

I noticed that she was very thin, not well dressed and very dirty. She told me that she hadn’t eaten for three days.. So, in my compassion, I brought her home and warmed up the enchiladas I made for you last night, the ones you wouldn’t eat because you’re afraid you’ll put on weight. The poor thing devoured them in moments.

Since she needed a good clean-up, I suggested a shower, and while she was doing that, I noticed her clothes were dirty and full of holes, so I threw them away.

Then, as she needed clothes, I gave her the designer jeans
that you have had for a few years, but don’t wear because you say they are too tight. I also gave her the underwear that was your anniversary present, which you don’t wear because I don’t have good taste.

I found the sexy blouse my sister gave you for Christmas that you don’t wear just to annoy her, and I also donated those boots you bought at the expensive boutique and don’t wear because someone at work has a pair the same.’

The husband took a quick breath and continued – ‘She was so grateful for my understanding and help that as I walked her to the door, she turned to me with tears in her eyes and said,
Please …Do you have anything else that your wife doesn’t use?

BIKERNET™ GUN NUT REPORT–Federal Appellate Court Upholds Decision to Block California’s Magazine Surrender Requirement–

FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2018 Federal Appellate Court Upholds Decision to Block California’s Magazine Surrender Requirement

Last summer, we reported on the welcome news that a federal court had blocked California’s plan to require owners of “large capacity” magazines to surrender or otherwise rid themselves of their formerly-lawful property.

As the judge in that case had put it: “On July 1, 2017, any previously law-abiding person in California who still possesses a firearm magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds will begin their new life of crime.” That was a bridge too far, he decided, and blocked enforcement of the law’s dispossession requirement.

California appealed that ruling, and now over a year later a divided three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld the lower court’s ruling. The case, Duncan v. Becerra, is supported by both the NRA and the California Rifle & Pistol Association.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are challenging a 2016 ban on so-called “large capacity magazines” (i.e., most ammunition feeding devices “with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds”).

California’s law went beyond similar laws in other anti-gun states by prohibiting not only the manufacturing, sale, or importation of such magazines but also their possession, including by those who had lawfully obtained them before the ban’s effective date of July 1, 2017. The only way for such people to comply with the law’s new requirements would be to surrender their magazines to the police, move them out of the state, or sell the magazines to a licensed firearms dealer.

On June 29, 2017, Judge Roger T. Benitez of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California ruled that the requirement for current owners to dispossess themselves of lawfully-acquired magazines likely violated the Second Amendment and the Constitution’s Taking Clause. “If this injunction does not issue, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of otherwise law-abiding citizens will have an untenable choice: become an outlaw or dispossess one’s self of lawfully acquired property,” Judge Benitez wrote. “That is a choice they should not have to make.” He therefore ordered California not to enforce the dispossession requirements while the underlying case on the ban’s constitutionality was being resolved. Judge Benitez’s ruling did, however, allow for enforcement of the state’s ban on the manufacturing, sale, and importation of the magazines.

On Tuesday, two out of three judges hearing the case on appeal upheld that decision. Those judges emphasized that Judge Benitez was within his authority to discount the supposed support the state offered for the ban as “incomplete,” “unreliable,” and “biased.”

The majority also chided the dissenting judge for substituting his own discretion for that of Judge Benitez, who had the primary responsibility to evaluate and weigh the evidence in the case. Notably, California had attempted to justify the ban before Judge Benitez by invoking, among other things, a 2013 report from the gun control advocacy group Mayor’s Against Illegal Guns.

Unfortunately, this latest decision does not conclusively resolve the case. California can appeal the enforcement ruling to the full Ninth Circuit, which could overturn the decision and allow the surrender provisions to go into effect. And even if the decision is allowed to stand, the underlying case still must be resolved before Judge Benitez, who could change his mind once all the evidence is fully presented.

All of which only underscores the importance of a strong Second Amendment backstop at the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Brett Kavanaugh — President Trump’s latest nominee to the high court — could play a decisive role in this and other Second Amendment cases currently making their way through the lower courts.

Hard Rock and Hard Riding Highlight Gettysburg Bike Week 2018 Rally–Jam-packed Entertainment Slate Wows at GBW 17th Anniversary

Gettysburg Bike Week kicked off Thursday, July 12, 2018, for its 17th anniversary rally at the Allstar Events Complex in Gettysburg, PA. Over the course of four days, rally goers enjoyed live music; burlesque; bike demos, shows, and competitions; great rec riding; a cornhole tournament; and much much more.

“It’s a cliché,” said event coordinator Kelly Shue. “But that doesn’t make it any less true: This was the best one yet.”

There was no shortage of music at this year’s rally, starting on Thursday night with country music sensation Parmalee. Hard rocker Lita Ford took over headlining duties on Friday, and Jackyl took it home Saturday night. All three of these top-flight musical acts came through in spades, providing high-energy melodic entertainment for maximum-capacity crowds.

Other great music acts playing throughout the weekend included the Metallica tribute band Fade to Black; acoustic wizards Redemption Road, Tom Senseney, and Acoustic Juice; Marshall’s Highway; Sound of Silence; and child percussion prodigy Avery the Drummer.

And music was just the beginning when it came to this year’s entertainment.

Legendary emcee Jack Schit presided over it all, performing master of ceremonies duties from the Budweiser Stage. Plying his trademark blend of profane yet good-natured repartee, Mr. Schit livened up already live events like the world-famous Tattoo Competition, Bike Games and mini-bike racing. The Parade of Chrome, Wall of Death, and the Cycle Source Ride-in Bike Show, were all greatly enjoyed by the record breaking crowd.

This one’s hardly in the books, but you can never start planning too early for next year’s Gettysburg Bike Week July 11-14, 2019: New and returning riders can find updates, event scheduling, lodging information and anything they ever needed to know about Gettysburg Bike Week by visiting http://www.gettysburgbikeweek.com.

MORE FROM THE BIKERNET GUN NUT FILES–Armed Teachers Can Save Lives: Guns Save Life’s Free Teacher CCW Class

Armed teachers can save lives. While The People of the Gun know this, others who are less familiar with firearms don’t always recognize this simple truth. Forty open-minded Illinois school teachers and staff members participated in a free concealed carry course this past weekend to learn more about guns and gun safety. And, of course, how guns save life.

The Land of Lincoln’s gun rights group Guns Save Life sponsored the free opportunity for school staff, along with the DeWitt County Sportsman’s Club, which donated the facilities. GSL Defense Training organized the class in the weeks following the Parkland, Florida school massacre.

The timing seemed right in light of increased discussions both locally and nationally of adding more good guys with guns to protect America’s children in schools. We thought of it as a whole new sort of professional development for education professionals, just in time for back-to-school.

Sixteen GSL Defense Training instructors, including myself, along with five other Illinois State Police-approved guest instructors volunteered to instruct and coach. Forty teachers showed up and thirty-nine graduated (we lost one student due to illness on the second day).

During introductions, we learned that the participants ranged from a school bus driver to an administrator. Elementary school, middle school and high school teachers made up the bulk of those present. One private school alone sent almost a dozen teachers, but most came from public schools. A few other school districts sent more than one. The vast majority of participants didn’t own a firearm. About a third of them had never fired a gun.

Even though few had familiarity with any sort of firearms, experienced red-shirted instructors remained no more than an arm’s length away to coach, assist and encourage safe learning.

Most notably — and much to Michael Bloomberg’s chagrin — those educators now no longer belong to the “never fired a gun” fraternity. In fact, they all gained the experience of firing 250 rounds over two days.

So what did these mostly non-gun owners think of their experience shooting? As class wound down, a teacher stood up to say, “I’ve taught for 26 years now and this is easily, by far the best teacher appreciation gift I’ve ever received!” The others applauded in agreement.

STAFF BIKERNET™ WEEKLY NEWS INVESTIGATION—Two items mentioned in the news needed explanation.

1. You mentioned how Wisconsin and other States want to milk the handy cow – as always any democratic nation in the world are always trying to screw the middle-class – the part of society which pays its taxes, keeps his head down-out of controversy, follows new more complicated parking laws, works more than 8 hours a day and raises a family while being friendly to his neighbors and “community” in cities.

This person does not want trouble. He will bend right down to kissing dirt rather than have a confrontation with any fellow citizen – forget about fighting unjust laws or injustice in general.

He is too busy working, trying to earn enough to pay bills, and has no time to read your concerns nor any time to participate in local government functioning – he has got work to do. He is the true minority in these nations and he chooses to remain one so he can retire and die without ruffling anyone’s feathers so as to be at peace and goodwill with his nation.

There is no elephant in his room. He has coffee and TV dinner in his room. You can go into that room and slap him and he will apologize for offending you. All he wants is to reach office by 9 am, get his paycheck in time, listen to an self-help audio book in bottleneck traffic driving back home, teach his children what he knows and hope that he can afford to save money to buy a burial plot in the real-estate-for-the-dead at a bargain price.

2. You mentioned dealers and industry people not doing anything or expecting AMA / MIC will get it done – well, they are not as influential nor funded the way NRA is.

Lobbying needs money. NRA or CARB can lobby and fight for laws and fighting against laws. If motorcycle industry is bust and no one wishes to put their money where their mouth is, this is how laws get passed and implemented.

Lobbying in the United States describes paid activity in which special interests hire well-connected professional advocates, often lawyers, to argue for specific legislation in decision-making bodies such as the United States Congress.

It is a highly controversial phenomenon, often seen in a negative light by journalists and the American public, with some critics describing it as a legal form of bribery or extortion.

The activity of lobbying has been interpreted by court rulings as constitutionally protected free speech and a way to petition the government for the redress of grievances, two of the freedoms protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Since the 1970s, lobbying activity has grown immensely in the United States in terms of the numbers of lobbyists and the size of lobbying budgets, and has become the focus of much criticism of American governance.

It is possible for foreign nations to influence the foreign policy of the United States through lobbying or by supporting lobbying organizations directly or indirectly. Nations such as US Allies Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have annual budgets in billions of US dollars to direct US lawmakers and US foreign policy in their favor.

Foreign Companies such as French Nestle or Taiwan’s Foxconn can change the way American companies and citizens live and work – including allowing Reebok to use slave child labor in Bangladesh to provide shoes sold in USA – getting blood diamonds from Africa re-classified for sale worldwide – providing bailouts to corrupt banks claiming “too big to fail”, etc.

Since lobbying rules require extensive disclosure, there is a large amount of information in the public sphere about which entities lobby, how, at whom, and for how much. The current pattern suggests much lobbying is done primarily by corporations, although a wide variety of coalitions representing diverse groups also occurs.

A report in The Nation in 2014 suggested that since 2002, lobbying activity was increasing and “going underground” as lobbyists use “increasingly sophisticated strategies” to obscure their activity.

Lobbying takes place at every level of government, including federal, state, county, municipal, and even local governments. In Washington, D.C., lobbying usually targets members of Congress, although there have been efforts to influence executive agency officials as well as Supreme Court appointments.

While the number of lobbyists in Washington is estimated to be over twelve thousand, those with real clout number in the dozens, and a small group of firms handles much of lobbying in terms of expenditures.

Analyst James A. Thurber estimated that the actual number of working lobbyists was close to 100,000 and that the industry brings in $9 billion annually.

A lawyer or a manager in such a firm earns huge salary for basically bribing Senators from funds channelized to his firm by vested interest groups, companies, NGOs, religious organizations, etc.

A SINGLE SENATOR from Utah removed all laws requiring FDA approval for useless health supplements sold in gyms and fitness shops across USA. Health industry is big business in Utah. They make almost a quarter of all the dietary supplements in America. And supplements are a $24-billion industry.

Making supplements used to be like making prescription drugs. You had to prove your product was safe and effective before you could sell it. Well, the supplement cowboys in Utah thought that was a real hassle.

So they asked their favorite Senator Orrin Hatch to change the rules and laws. And now you don’t have to prove your product is safe at all. And the F.D.A. has to prove that it’s not safe if they want to take it off the market.

Now, you too can sell muscle booster medicine made in your garage on your website. Senator Orrin of Utah says it is your citizenship rights to sell snake oil just as the men at the Frontier in Old West sold cure for baldness.

NEWS FROM THE HILL – Bikers, Boats & Bacon
All of my favorite things! On Thursday, deep in the underbelly of the U.S. Capitol, lawmakers and their staff gathered to hear as riders and boaters shared their concerns over ethanol. Lured in by the promise of free breakfast sandwiches, staffers stayed to hear from a panel made up of industry representatives. These included Kawasaki, Stratton & Briggs (they make lawnmowers), a representative from Boat U.S. (the AAA for boaters) and yep, you guessed it – The Motorcycle Riders Foundation. Local MRF member Mike Sponseller, a professional racer and personal friend of our own Tiffany Cipoletti, he explained to the crowd why higher ethanol blended gasoline is such a concern for riders.

To illustrate his point, we flashed images of corroded and damaged motorcycle engine parts including fuel injectors, tank liners, fuel lines and even showed a snapshot taken directly from a Harley-Davidson owner’s manual explaining the risks of using E15, E30 and E85.

Your MRF has been working with our allies in the broader marine and motorcycle industry for months now to put together this solid performance to hit our point home.

The Motorcycle and Boat Caucuses helped to put on the event in an effort to spur support for H.R.5855, the Consumer Protection and Fuel Transparency Act of 2018. This bill would require the EPA to revise the labeling requirements for fuel pumps that dispense E15 and conduct a consumer education campaign to inform the public about the risks of improper use of E15 and the vehicles and equipment that are prohibited from using E15…like MOTORCYCLES!

Now that we have some momentum, we’ll need to hammer our lawmakers to support the bill AND we’ll need to shop for a Senate leader to take up the fight in that chamber. I’ve already gotten some interest from Sen. Baldwin (Wisc.) and possibly Sen. Inhofe (Oklahoma). I’ll keep you posted on this.

RETURNING TO THE BIKERNET™ BAD JOKE LIBRARY–I don’t need anger management. I need people to stop pissing me off.

I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it.

The sole purpose of a child’s middle name is so he can tell when he’s really in trouble..

During one of her daily classes, a teacher trying to teach good manners, asked her students the following question: “Michael, if you were on a date having dinner with a nice young lady, how would you tell her that you have to go to the bathroom?”

Michael said: ‘Just a minute I have to go pee.’

The teacher responded by saying: ‘That would be rude and impolite’

What about you Sherman, how would you say it?’

Sherman said: ‘I am sorry, but I really need to go to the bathroom. I’ll be right back.’

‘That’s better, but it’s still not very nice to say the word bathroom at the dinner table.

And you, little Johnny, can you use your brain for once and show us your good manners

Johnny said: ‘I would say: Darling, may I please be excused for a moment? I have to shake hands with a very dear friend of mine, whom I hope to introduce to you after dinner.’

The teacher fainted…

STURGIS IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER—Going to test ride the Indian today.

As it turns out the 5-Ball team with have three pieced of art representing us at Sturgis this year and all in the town of Buffalo Chip.

My heavy steel piece is going up for auction at the Flying Piston Breakfast, while two of Frank Jr.’s art pieces will be apart of the Michael Lichter display. He’s pumped.
