My granddaughter called me about leasing cars. I’ve leased two, along time ago. I started to tell her my thoughts and she said, “I thought you were going to tell me some horror story.”

I said, “Never, always find the positive in everything you do.” That’s the code and don’t forget it.

On the other hand, several years ago I noticed, a trend toward punishment in our society. That’s also against the code. For instance single-lane streets to punish car drivers and glorify bicycle lanes doesn’t work. It just jams up the cars causing more pollution, stress, anxiety and accidents. When I was a kid I rode bicycles everywhere. I didn’t need or want a lane. Then they passed a law against bicycles on sidewalks. Makes no sense.

We need to celebrate our brothers and sisters, not punish them for driving cars or motorcycles. In the meantime ride free, forever. You’re not killing the planet, your feeding the plants. When they figure that out, the control freaks are going to look very bad.

SEATTLE PASSES ENGINE SOUND RESTRICTIONS—ALKI BEACH affected.

The Seattle City Council updated its community noise ordinance, giving police the authority to crack down on excessive sound near Alki Beach, where homeowners complained about loud engine noise, blaring stereos and screeching tires, according to a report by www.kings.com.

Police may now issue citations for muffler and engine sound that “can be clearly heard by a person of normal hearing at a distance of 75 feet or more from the vehicle.”

Before they used noise meters. A summary of the ordinance states that the police department does not possess noise meters and that police find the meters difficult to use and calibrate.—AMA

NEWS FROM THE SCOTT JACOBS FAMILY–
Well, I must say that I’m happy I made the drive with Alexa to Milwaukee for the 115th! It was over four years since I last visited the city and five years since the 110th Rally.

The turnout for the event was great; the crowds were large and the people were friendly. It’s estimated that over 150,000 bikers came from around the world came to celebrate Freedom with us at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

It took us four hours to set up the booth because it was so large.

We were set up inside the Chrome Tent next door to the Museum, which was a PRIME location. The tent was slammed with people from open to close. Our booth was over 40′ X 15′ and we proudly hung Scott’s four new 115th Anniversary Original Paintings for everyone to view and order from.

The overall response was positive and many people added one of all to their collection to remember this monumental time in Harley’s History.

Scott’s Anniversary paintings are the perfect memento to remember the trip to the 115th.

We know we all enjoyed a little too much booze during the Rally, so what better subject to collect than wine and spirits?

While Alexa, Scott, Ron, and I were at the Milwaukee Rally, our wonderful employee Tate made a pit stop in between Milwaukee and Davenport, Iowa to have flat track racer, Bill Tuman sign the “Wheels Through Time” edition!

Due to his poor health, we were only able to get 30 of the 51 signed. That means the first 30 collectors will get theirs signed by both Bill Tuman and Jared Mees!

We are down to 8 of these!

REMINDER
We have until September 30th, 2018 to collect until they are officially sold out! After the 30th, we will close the editions and the only way to get one in the future will be finding a private buyer that’s willing to part with theirs.

NEWS FROM VINTAGE RIDES–It’s been nearly 12 years since you started the Vintage Rides journey.
What do you see in the rearview mirror?

I’m really happy with how far we’ve come. The adventure began in 2005, when I was
19 years old and a student in New Delhi. That’s where I learned to ride a motorcycle, bought my first Enfield and drove across the country. It will remain one of the most stunning trips of my life, full of unexpected experiences. I didn’t have enough money
to afford the trip, so I slept one night in a slum, and another time on my bike near
the highway, in the middle of trucks! These are the memories that lead to
the most incredible encounters.

I wanted to share this approach to travel and our team of adventure enthusiasts
is now 40 strong.

I also see the Vintage Rides community that we created over the past 12 years. You are more than 1,200 to ride with us each year, to share this old-school riding approach, in search of the most beautiful landscapes and memorable experiences. Thank you!

What’s your dream bike?

I don’t have a dream bike per se. That being said – and this will come as no surprise –
I am very fond of the Royal Enfield Bullet Cast Iron Engine, right side gear shift.
They have the looks and the personality, the ideal combo for travelling: quiet, charming and, of course, sturdy!

What is your definition of travel?

For me, what makes a journey are the encounters and the unexpected. That’s why I try to steer clear of the tourism highways. And the magic happens when you travel on modest and likable motorcycles because it guarantees authentic and spontaneous contact with the people you meet. For me, travelling is also about exploring so I love to change routes, for the sake of the ride and the beauty of the landscapes. Sometimes you get a few surprises, but that’s what adventure is all about!

Can you share an anecdote from one of your motorcycle trips?

There are so many…. The last memory that comes to mind was during the Frozen Ride with Jean, Baptiste, Sylvain, and Thomas. We decided to cross the frozen Khövsgöl Lake during the winter with side cars. After a first asphalted but freezing phase, we hit the ice. And believe me, it’s pretty special. It’s a complete change of scenery. I had a feeling of light vertigo for a few hours, before getting used to it…. Oh, and avoiding crashing
into Sylvain by an inch, after a hell of a slide!

I am building a 114ci Shovelhead with Dual plugs heads, has a 6 speed baker BDL 3? setup and looking at a EFI setup.

The Pegasus FI has ignition in the kit which is great, could you tell me

1. Would it make the engine run smother seeing it has the 5? stroke which I understand will run a little rough due to the long stroke.

The EUROPEAN SHOW highlight of the motorcycling year: INTERMOT 2018

A host of world premieres and powerful presentations in Cologne

It’s the highlight of the year for motorcycle and scooter fans from all over the world: INTERMOT, the International Motorcycle, Scooter and E-Bike Fair, from 3 to 7 October 2018. Over 1,000 exhibiting companies and brands from around 40 countries, including all the big names, will present their latest models and product innovations to the international trade audience and the biker community.

In addition to motorcycles and scooters, the product range on offer at INTERMOT also encompasses accessories, clothing, parts, customizing, travel and workshop equipment. INTERMOT is organised by Koelnmesse GmbH, and the conceptual sponsor of the event is the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), based in Essen, Germany.

INTERMOT will occupy Halls 6-10 of the Cologne fair grounds with a total gross exhibition space of around 100,000 square metres. The tried-and-tested concept of distributing the market leaders across all halls will be continued in order to ensure a steady visitor flow.

Among others, BMW Motorrad, Harley Davidson, Honda, Ducati, Kawasaki, KTM, Kymco, the Piaggio Group with the Aprilia, Moto Guzzi and Vespa brands, as well as Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha will be on the starting grid in Cologne. In addition to these, brands like Indian, which has once again expanded considerably, Royal Enfield and Horex will also attend with their own presentations.

Benelli can also be seen again in Cologne. In addition, new brands in the electric mobility segment, such as Energica and Zero with their e-motorcycles or emco and Kumpan with their e-motor scooter ranges, will provide fresh momentum in Cologne. In the clothing section, the return of the well-known Italian manufacturer Dainese, which is also bringing the renowned helmet brand AGV with it to Cologne, is especially worth mentioning.

Almost 65 per cent of the more than 1,000 exhibiting companies and brands come from abroad. The countries most strongly represented at INTERMOT are Italy, the USA, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Pakistan, Spain, China and Taiwan. Alongside the individual appearances, groups of exhibitors are also taking part from China, Great Britain, Italy, Pakistan, Taiwan and the USA.

INTERMOT customized continues to grow
 

INTERMOT customized in Hall 10.1 is being given more space this year and is also raising its international profile. Out of the major manufacturers, BMW Motorrad, Harley Davidson, Kawasaki, Yamaha and, for the first time, Suzuki and Indian have all registered to also take part in the INTERMOT customized segment in addition to their regular participation.

Renowned distributors such as Custom Chrome Europe, Louis, Motorcycle Storehouse and the parts specialist Zodiac will be represented in Cologne as well. The starting grid will of course also feature internationally renowned customizers, for example: Berham Customs, Harley Factory, JvB, Fred Kodlin, Mellows, No Limit Custom, Walzwerk, Wrenchmonkees and not forgetting the Sultans of Sprint, an alliance between customizers and sprint racers. In keeping with the setting, numerous suppliers will of course also be showcasing accessories to suit the scene – from clothing and helmets to custom-made parts and exhaust systems.

In the Garage Area of INTERMOT customized, the pros will show off the work that goes into creating custom bikes. Tasks like changing the footrests, handlebars, headlights and indicators will be as expertly explained and performed as shaping and fitting a fuel tank. The area even includes a mobile spray booth.

At this year’s event customizing enthusiasts and keen mechanics will be able to follow two projects from the design stage right through to the finished bike. A brand new Ducati Scrambler 1100 will be completely redesigned and customized over the course of the five days of the fair. Niels Peter Jensen, the ProSieben Maxx TV channel presenter of shows such as “Extreme!” and “Man Made”, and himself a keen customizer, will be attending and discussing the conversion process in the Garage Area Lounge.

Under the banner “Turning scrap metal into gold”, INTERMOT customized is looking for a conceptual idea from the motorcycling community, wherein a given motorcycle (Honda CB 450S) is customized using parts from LSL and Highsider and with a maximum budget of Euro 750.00. The winning idea will be implemented by the winners, with the support of the experts in the Garage Area, and completed by the end of INTERMOT 2018.

Also taking place this year as a highlight of INTERMOT customized will be the AMD Championship of Custom Bike Building, an event that stops off in Cologne every two years. It is here that the “who’s who” of customizers will be putting themselves before an international jury with their spectacular conversions.

The world title is traditionally awarded in the FreeStyle Class – all modifications are accepted here. Alongside this, customizing specialists will be showcasing their impressive creativity in the four other categories Retro/Modified, Modified Harley-Davidson, Performance and Café Racer.

Ladies@intermot – a programme specially tailored to female bikers: female motorcycling enthusiasts will meet in Hall 7, from where tours of the fair centred on bikes and clothing for women will depart. In addition, the programme includes clubs, associations and interest groups as well as events and information to do with touring, safety, technology and sport, geared specially for women.

CALIFORNIA CONTINUES TO PUNISH THE FOSSIL FUEL WORLD—S.B. 1316 passed the Senate and was referred to the Assembly Appropriations committee for consideration.

This bill attempts to deny the off-highway vehicle community a long-overdue opportunity for increased motorized recreational opportunities at the Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area’s Alameda-Tesla Expansion Area.

The property was bought with funds from the off Highway Vehicles Trust Fund more tha 20 years ago.

The opposition to the bill comes primarily from local land owners, many of whome previously agreed to the acquisition.

TATTOO OF THE WEEK–Hard dragon was two sessions on James “The Tileman’s” son. The first session was laying out our design so I was proportional and flowed with his body. With only showing half of the body of the dragon coming out of waves. The rest will be added later to complete a full sleeve when ready. Second session was the black n Grey shading to bring it to life so far we are 8-9 hours in.

I just turned 72, been riding 55 years, had accidents, been injured, volunteered for Vietnam, spent 2 years, and yes I spent time with the medics. All I am saying is we make choices, sometimes they don’t work out how we planned. I have the scars to prove it.

Am I going to stop riding or doing things i shouldn’t do? I don’t want to my last moments wishing i had gone for it. This is not a no-fault life as much as the lawyers and liberals would like it to be. I will take my lumps, get up dust myself off and figure I have learned something.

The cooperation with the engine and performance division of Prefix also means that LIQUI MOLY can test its lubricants, greases and additives under extreme conditions. The contact was made via Stevens-Miller Racing. The racing team uses LIQUI MOLY and has had very good experiences with it in Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros and Dodge Challengers which all have Prefix engines.

An Uber driver, Robert Westlake, had picked up a fare at a bar in the early morning hours of August 28. A young woman, Jessica, had helped the inebriated woman get into the car.

Somehow Jessica’s estranged boyfriend thought she was the passenger in the Uber car. He threatened via text messages to beat up the driver. The ex-boyfriend, Jason Boek, drove up behind the Uber, then forced it to the side of the road. Boek got out of his truck, approached the driver, and threatened to shoot him while pulling his cell phone from his pocket and pointing it at the driver.

What Boek didn’t know was that the driver, Westlake, has a Florida concealed carry permit and had just finished a stint at the local police academy.

Westlake shot Boek once in the chest. He died at the scene as Westlake administered CPR. Westlake had a dashcam in the car that recorded the event (starts at the 9:10 mark above).

“This is justifiable homicide all day long,” Sheriff Judd said. “You have the right to protect yourself. This is a classic stand your ground case. A classic, and this was the intent of the law.”

“But you see how rapidly you have to make a decision of whether you live or whether you die. And I can tell you unequivocally the Uber driver, Robert, did exactly the right thing to protect himself and ostensibly his passenger as well.”

LOS ANGELES SHOULD EMBRACE SMART MOBILITY POLICIES–By Joe Buscaino, Los Angeles Daily News

The recent dockless electric scooter and bike revolution created a solution many civic leaders were looking for: a multi-modal, efficient, affordable and emissions-free transportation option that is available to everyone and solves the problem of getting people to and from the first and last mile of their journeys to public transportation.

However, as soon as Angelenos started using this new mode of transportation, everyone panicked.

Most of those concerned cited safety as their primary issue with dockless scooters- they disrupt traffic when ridden in traffic lanes, cause conflict when taken on the sidewalk by scofflaw riders, and cause accessibility issues when parked in all kinds of inappropriate places.

I understand these sentiments because I see all the same issues on our streets and sidewalks — with cars. Cars clog our streets every day in traffic jams, which are only made worse when collisions occur. I see cars parked on the sidewalk and on front lawns all the time.

The worst part about cars is the manner in which people are severely injured or even killed due to vehicle collisions. This isn’t some abstract problem — we have good hard evidence that children in America are twice as likely to die in traffic collisions relative to other affluent nations. Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for children ages 2-14 in Los Angeles.

So while I get the concern for safety on scooters, it strikes me as misplaced to blame the scooters rather than the 4,000-pound steel machines that are actually hurting people.

I fully support dockless technology and have been begging companies like Lime to bring their electric scooters to my district. My office launched the first pilot program in the city with Lime last November and it has been very successful. There was minimal negative feedback from our community members and over 5,000 active riders in the first month of its debut.

We need to reduce traffic congestion not by building more traffic lanes, but by reducing car trips and that means creating multi-modal options that make public transportation available to more of our population.

There will always be the need to adjust and tweak regulations over time for innovations like this, and for Los Angeles’ part, we are nearing the end of the process to enact dockless regulations. The City Council will soon vote on temporary rules as a placeholder until the DOT develops the permanent rules. These regulations would allow companies to put up to 10,500 bikes or scooters in the city, and potentially increase that number based on utilization and performance. Regulations are the smart approach to spurring the great potential this service has to offer.

The Public Works Committee and the Transportation Committee spent a lot of time debating safety regulations like the top speed of scooters and whether or not helmets should be required, but we failed to have a conversation about building a transportation infrastructure needed to truly create a safe space where e-scooters and e-bikes can operate.

All cities must start developing the criteria to build networks of protected bike lanes where electric scooters and bikes can coexist without having to brave the dangerous streets ruled by cars or get in the way of pedestrians.

Sevilla, Spain recently built a 50-mile network of protected bike lanes at a cost of about $50 million, attracting 70,000 daily users. By comparison, the 15-mile Expo Line from Downtown to Santa Monica cost $1.5 billion and boards 64,000 passengers daily.

I have recently proposed a protected bike lane loop in Wilmington, home to the highest concentration of bike lanes in California. However, even with regular bike lanes, it’s very scary and dangerous to ride a bike or a scooter in an industrial area alongside 18-wheeler trucks with only paint as a barrier.

I feel confident that my council colleagues and I will make the right considerations when developing the rules for riding and parking dockless electric scooters in the same way rules have been created for dockless cars — scooters and bikes should not be more difficult.

Ford sold over 15 million cars between 1908 and 1927, however, parking regulations didn’t begin until 1935 with the installation of the first parking meters and issuing of the first parking tickets. Dockless scooters will have been in use less than 18-months before regulations go into effect on January 1, 2019.

At our heart, all of us who live, work, and raise families in Los Angeles are seeking the best quality of life for our community. My colleagues in local government here in Los Angeles and across the nation would be wise to follow our lead once again by embracing smart mobility policies that connect communities and create opportunities.

My grandson was at an intersection in Venice this week and watched one of the scooter riders get mowed down. Interesting. –Bandit

The new facility in California, which will serve as a satellite of the Willie G. Davidson Product Development Facility in Wauwatosa, Wis., is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2018. It will initially focus on electric vehicle research and development, including battery, power electronics and e-machine design, development and advanced manufacturing.

Long term, the company may consider expanding the center’s focus to an increased range of advanced technologies that uniquely leverage the rich talent in the Silicon Valley and support its most comprehensive and competitive lineup of motorcycles across a broad spectrum of price points, power sources and riding styles.

The company has already begun recruiting top talent in electrical, mechanical and software engineering, with experience in developing and delivering a wide variety of EV systems from design through production. The facility will initially employ a staff of approximately 25, most of which the company intends to hire from within the Silicon Valley area.

Bitcoin Maven Sentenced to One Year in Federal Prison–
LOS ANGELES,—The so-called “Bitcoin Maven,” who admitted to operating an unlicensed bitcoin-for-cash exchange business and laundering bitcoin that was represented to be proceeds of narcotics activity, was sentenced today to 12 months and one day in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $20,000.

The so-called “Bitcoin Maven,” Theresa Lynn Tetley, 50, of Southern California, a former stockbroker and real estate investor, was sentenced by United States District Judge Manuel L. Real for conducting an illegal business and engaging in unlawful monetary transactions involving bitcoins. Tetley was also ordered to forfeit 40 Bitcoin, $292,264.00 in cash, and 25 assorted gold bars that were the proceeds of her illegal activity.

Tetley pleaded guilty to one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and one count of money laundering.

The government’s case against Tetley is the first of this kind charged in the Central District of California. According to court documents, Tetley offered bitcoin-for-cash exchange services without registering as a money services business with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), and without implementing anti money-laundering mechanisms such as customer due diligence and reporting certain transactions required for these types of businesses.

Tetley advertised on localbitcoins.com and exchanged, in total, between $6 and $9.5 million for customers across the country, charging rates higher than institutions that were registered with FinCEN.

As a result of operating this unregistered business, Tetley facilitated laundering for one individual who is suspected of receiving bitcoin from unlawful activity, such as sales of drugs on the dark web. In the course of her business, Tetley also conducted an exchange of bitcoin-for-cash for an undercover agent who represented that his bitcoin were the proceeds of narcotics trafficking.

According to sentencing documents, the government argued that “[i]n light of the growth of the dark web and the use of digital currency, unlicensed exchangers provide an avenue of laundering for those who use digital currency for illicit purposes.” The government asserted that Tetley’s business “fueled a black-market financial system” that “purposely and deliberately existed outside of the regulated bank industry.”

The investigation into Tetley was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and IRS Criminal Investigation.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Puneet V. Kakkar of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Section.

VA REPORT–Bedsores, neglect abound at worst VA nursing homes

BEDFORD, Mass. – The nurse’s aide was busy getting a patient ready for bed when she noticed a commotion behind a privacy curtain on the other side of the room. She heard Russ Bonanno, a 94year-old veteran, shout, “Ow, ow, ow.”

“It sounded like fighting,” said Julee, who asked that her last name not be used out of fear of retaliation. When she went to check what was happening, she saw another aide trying to hoist Bonanno from his wheelchair to his bed, normally a two-person job.

Julee said she watched the other aide simply toss the elderly dementia patient onto the bed.

“Let me tell you how brutal that guy was with the veteran,” Julee wrote to her supervisor two days after the alleged incident May 18. “After he was done, (we) went and checked Mr. Bonanno. The guy was wet. Everything
needed to be changed.”

The aide accused of roughly handling Bonanno quietly resigned, but Julee, the aide who blew the whistle, was fired two weeks later. She said her supervisor told her she had attendance problems.

Welcome to one of the lowest-rated nursing homes for veterans in the nation run by the U.S. Department of Vet-The erans Affairs. The facility, at the VA hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts, is among 11 nationwide to earn the lowestpossible one-star rating from the agency based on both overall quality and the results of surprise inspections. The ratings are on a scale of one to five, with one being the lowest.

The others are scattered from Lyons, New Jersey, to Prescott, Arizona, and from Dayton and Chillicothe, Ohio, to Tampa.

Concerning conditions

Bedford’s rating reflected an array of problems with care provided to the more than 200 veterans who live there, including bedsores, high rates of medication and decline of veterans’ health, according to statistics outlined in documents obtained by USA TODAY and The Boston Globe, which have jointly investigated VA nursing homes.

The poor grade for surprise inspections in part reflected the staff’s handson treatment of residents. In 2017, inspectors from the Long Term Care Institute found several instances of neglect, including a veteran lying naked in bed covered by a urine- and feces-stained sheet. Their report cited another veteran who struggled to shove food into his mouth with his hands after trying unsuccessfully to use a spoon. Staffers were nearby.

The report came against the backdrop of another resident who died in his bed in July 2016 while the nurse’s aide who was supposed to check on him played video games on her computer. The aide, who has since resigned, was supposed to check on Bill Nutter hourly because he had a condition that could cause his heart to stop without warning.

Joan Clifford, the Bedford VA hospital director who also oversees the nursing home, defended the quality of care there and said the team always strives to improve it.
“On my first day there, I walked all the units, and I was struck at how well cared for the nursing home patients were,” she said.
Clifford said Julee was fired for reasons she could not discuss and not for her reporting of the alleged abuse of Bonanno. She acknowledged that the aide accused of poor care was allowed to resign. If he hadn’t, she said, disciplinary “action would have been taken.”

Clifford said the one-star quality rating the facility received from the VA didn’t take into account the complexity of the patient population, which includes many patients with dementia or psychiatric problems.

“There have been improvements, and we’re expecting a better score next time,” she said.
‘Dandruff and heavy stains’

Her reassurances mean little to the family of Charles Amidon, a highly decorated veteran who once served as medical adviser to the South Vietnamese army. For four years, the retired lieutenant colonel has lived in Bedford VA’s Building 4, where Nutter died.

“We have experiences with civilian hospitals,” Amidon’s son Christopher said, noting that his father had stayed at a private, long-term care facility. “You see the level of care. It was like night and day. … (In Bedford,) I noticed patients in wheelchairs sitting in the hallway who hadn’t been bathed. They had dandruff and heavy stains.”

Clifford said she couldn’t discuss any individual veteran’s care because neither the patient nor the family members signed necessary releases.

BONNEVILLE NEWS–Urge Congress to support Bonneville Salt Flats restoration

Restoring racing surface takes federal dollars and your letter of support!

Another AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, also known as the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, just wrapped up on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. First-timers experienced the spectacle and thrill of the event. Veterans returned for another try, and records were broken. While the excitement continues, nearly everyone in the motorcycle racing world is aware that the salt flats are not what they used to be. And corrections must be made soon.

Take Action 

The thickness of the salt crust has been declining since the 1960s, when the U.S. Bureau of Land Management issued mining leases that allowed brine to be removed for potash extraction. The leases did not require the salt byproduct be pumped back onto the flats. The international race course-once 13 miles-has been reduced to no more than 8, threatening Bonneville’s status in the world land speed competition.

A test program by the BLM and the mining company demonstrated that pumping 1.5 million to 2 million tons of brine onto the flats annually could significantly improve the salt thickness and racing surface. Increasing the present rate of 400,000 to 600,000 tons per year to 1.5 million tons or more would require extensive pumping infrastructure improvements. And the funding for those improvements requires Congressional support.

About Hal Robinson™

Hal Robinson (1928-1984), from Bellingham, Washington, started out as a sign painter, worked for GTE as an illustrator for the Yellow Pages and became a freelance cartoonist and illustrator. His motto was “publish or parish.” His work went international in such countries as England, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Asia for more than half a century. Robinson drew for Easyriders Magazine from 1971-1984. He was well known through his drawings of such characters as Miraculous Mutha, Red Rider and Little Beaver, etc.

He masterfully illustrated hundreds of custom Harley-Davidsons for Easyriders Magazine. He was a classic political cartoonist as well and is known for his clever and hilarious panel jokes and very detailed illustrations. Robinson was also published in Iron Horse, In the Wind, Cycletoons, Cartoons, Buzza Cardoza, and many other magazines. It is Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, Ca. and administered by the Las Virgenes Independent School District. I will get more particulars, including past history of the auto diagnostics program, and send it along tomorrow.

The local school board has deleted auto shop, that usually sent several top student techs to state final diagnostic competition, and spent $13 million on a performing arts center. I wonder how many of the kids will make a living singing and dancing?

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–Chukchi Sea polar bears number almost 3000 according to new survey results

The Chukchi Sea finally has a polar bear population estimate! According to survey results from 2016 only recently made public, about 2937 bears (1522-5944) currently inhabit the region, making this the largest subpopulation in the Arctic. This is exciting news — and a huge accomplishment — but the US Fish and Wildlife Service responsible for the work has been oddly mum on the topic.

Not only that, but an extrapolation of that estimate calculated by USFWS researchers for Chukchi plus Alaska (the US portion of the Southern Beaufort Sea subpopulation) was estimated at 4437 (2283-9527), although with “significant uncertainty.” Nevertheless, it means the 2016 estimate for Alaska could be roughly three times what it was in 2010: a whopping 1500 or so, up from about 450 (or about 225-650) for the same area estimated during the last survey (Bromaghin et al. 2015: Fig. 5a).

Even if the real number for Alaska is only twice as large (~1000), that’s still a huge improvement. It would eliminate the Southern Beaufort as the only polar bear subpopulation in the Arctic to have shown a significant decline blamed on human-caused global warming (Crockford 2018). If the recovery is real, it means the 2004-2006 decline was a temporary fluctuation after all, just like previous declines in the region. I expect, however, that it will take a dedicated SB population survey for officials to concede that point.

There is not yet a detailed report to cite (Regehr et al. in prep), but the numbers were announced at the 10th meeting of the Russian-American Commission on Polar Bears held at the end of July this year (AC SWG 2018) by Eric Regehr (formerly of the US Fish & Wildlife Service, as of 2017 at the University of Washington). [h/t to G.H.] This was the same report that raised the quota for subsistence hunting in the Chukchi from 58 to 85, based on these new figures.

Regehr was quoted as saying:

“Chukchi bears remain larger and fatter and have not seen downward trends in cub production and survival, according to new preliminary information on the health and numbers of bears.”

Recent research on polar bears and their prey has been on-going in the Chukchi Sea since 2008 (Crawford et al. 2015; Crawford and Quackenbush 2013; Rode and Regehr 2010; Regehr et al. 2010, Rode et al. 2014, 2015, 2018). Now it’s all coming together to paint a picture of a large population of polar bears in excellent physical condition, with strong reproduction and cub survival (such as triplet litters sighted on numerous occasions), despite a much longer ice-free period in summer than in the 1980s.

Fat bears have been a common summer sight in the Chukchi Sea as well as in Alaska.

English cyclopean comes from the Latin adjective Cyclopeus, a borrowing of Greek Kykl?peios, a derivative of the common noun, proper noun, and name Kýklops, which the Greeks interpreted to mean “round eye” (a compound of kýklos “wheel” and ops “eye, face”).

The most famous Cyclops is Polyphemus, a crude, solitary shepherd living on an island whom Odysseus blinded in Homer’s Odyssey. Hesiod (ca. 8th century b.c.) in his Theogony names three Cyclopes; they are craftsmen who make Zeus’s thunderbolts, and whom the Greeks often credited with building the walls of ancient Mycenae, Tiryns, Argos, and the acropolis of Athens, all constructed with massive limestone blocks roughly fitted together without mortar. We are working with Brian Klock on a bagger tech with my Son Frank.

I’ve sent my notion for the Wilmington Waterfront Sculpture far and wide with only mild response until recently. Emilio drew this sketch to show how the heart could be built to look like the hull of a ship.

I’m working on a couple of other projects, which I’ll share with you this weekend.
