Pre-XMAS THURSDAY NEWS FOR Thursday, December 19, 2013

Hey,

Another challenging week and a full moon. Watch out for those bastards, I mean the full moons. They seem to unleash the evil, and test our souls.

Sure, that sounds strange, but we all have bad days. Instead of getting wrapped in negativity, look at it as a test, or just another challenge you will overcome and move beyond. It’s all about helping others and reaching your goals.

We like that mantra around here. It doesn’t always work, but we reach out daily to help or brothers and sisters in the industry.

Let’s hit the news:

The Bikernet News is sponsored in part by IronWorks, Cycle Source, and Easyriders magazines.

the only question now was, Whitherward to vanish, in what hole to hide oneself!

UNCLE MONKEY TAKES STOCK–
It is time to take stock of the year and to look forward to the next. Life is full of ups and downs, hardship and joy. It’s in our progressive nature: We perceive, overcome, concur, devour and progress on.

My advice is to embrace the beauty and wonder that is all around us. Too often we get wrapped up in life, hitting deadlines, striving for something greater, that we forget what we have accomplished.

My teenage self would be dumbfounded at what I have accomplished; a beautiful wife, a wonderful home, great kids, and a garage full of motorcycles and tools.

Sadly we wait for the unfortunate to happen, a health scare, death of a family member or colleague before we steal that moment. Embrace today, saviour today.

Life is what happens when we are making other plans. It is in the little moments that we change, that we grow. Shift gears, make those moments count. Slow down and smell the roses, awe at the speed and agility of the bike you are on. Find the beauty within and all around you.

That is my philosophy that I am closing out this year and embracing as I write a new one. Sing out loud; spin a pretty girl around the dance floor even if it is in your own kitchen. Watch an old movie or call an old friend. Try new foods, or new adventures.

Don’t let life race by, join in the race, live the race. Life is short but it takes a lifetime to live it so appreciate all the moments, live in the now and life will reward you.

LEADER NEWS, Which Motorcycle Phone Mount is Right for You?

We use our smart phones for everything these days. But with the variety of phones (not to mention cases and covers for them), sometimes it’s difficult to know the best way to mount a phone on your motorcycle.

It’s been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. We think a video is worth 10,000!

In Leader’s newest video, eCaddy Motorcycle Phone Mount Overview, Leader co-owner Tracey Cramer gives a quick demo on four different types of phone mounts:

•The eCaddy Tri-Grip is ideal for larger phones, or phones in cases/covers
•The eCaddy Deluxe Universal is the most flexible and works with phones both in cases and alone
•The eCaddy Diamond is specifically made for Apple iPhones
•If waterproofing is important to you, the eCaddy Ultra with waterproof cover is just the ticket

But perhaps most important, Tracey ‘tells it like it is’ when it comes to manufacturing in the US: “Our products are not cheap. They are machined, polished and chrome plated in the US. But you get what you pay for; why not do it right? And more to the point, you’ll still be using the eCaddy for years to come because that’s how solid they are.”

The eCaddy Mounts have been made in the USA since their inception 13+ years ago – and this video shows why we’re committed to keeping production in the USA!

BIKERNET RETIREMENT VILLAGE MEMO–
A Scottish Jew decided to retire and take up golf, so he applied for membership at a local golf club.

About a week later he received a letter that his application has been rejected.

He went to the club to inquire as to why.

Secretary: You are aware that this is a Scottish golf club?

Scot: Aye, but I am as Scottish as you are, ma’am, my name is MacTavish.

Secretary: Do you know that on formal occasions we wear a kilt?

Scot: Aye, I do know, and I wear a kilt too.

Secretary: You are also aware, that we wear nothing under the kilt?

Scot: Aye, and neither do I.

Secretary: Are you also aware, that the members sit naked in the steam room?

Scot: Aye, I also do the same.

Secretary: But you are a Jew?

Scot: Aye, I be that.

Secretary: So, being
Jewish, you are circumcised, is that correct?

Scot: Aye, I be that, too.

Secretary: I am terribly sorry, but the members just would not feel comfortable sitting
in the steam room with you, since your privates are different from theirs.

Scot: Ach, I know that you have to be a Protestant to march with the Orangemen.
And I know that you have to be a Catholic to join the Knights of Columbus .
But this is the first time I’ve heard that you have to be a complete prick to join a golf club!

MIAMI ?Gator for beer?– Cops say no way.  Florida wildlife officials say a man tried to trade a live alligator for beer at a Miami convenience store. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino says the man received a citation for illegally capturing and trying to sell the gator.

Pino said that the man trapped the 4-foot-long gator at a nearby park and brought it to the store Dec. 10.When he proposed to trade the animal for a 12-pack of beer, the store clerk called authorities. The animal was released back into the wild.

DOUG COFFEY’S RetroMod Panhead– Part 5–Z-Bars and Risers ON BIKERNET, NOW–Back in the sixties the movie Wild Angels came out shortly followed by a soundtrack album with a great cover
One of the bikes on the cover caught my eye. The one to the right of the lead bike has a set of low rise Zee style handlebars.

Try as I might I could never find a manufacturer low rise Zee bars. Everything available was four inch rise or higher and it is still the same today.
I decided I would make my own Zee bars for this new bike project.

CAMERAMAN IS CLEARED--Man recorded traffic stop

By Andrew Ford

FLORIDA TODAY Prosecutors have dropped charges against a man who was arrested after filming Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies.

Jeffrey Marcus Gray, 43, was arrested in October after deputies said he got in the way and disobeyed orders while filming a deputy making a traffic stop. He was taken to Brevard County Jail and booked on two charges of resisting an officer without violence and one charge of trespassing after warning.

Gray, 43, told FLORIDA TODAY he works for Photography is Not a Crime, a blog that focuses on recording police activity. He and his attorney called the arrest wrongful.“It is abundantly clear from the facts of this case that the defendant was seeking to provoke a confrontation with the Sheriff’s department in order to be arrested,” Assistant State Attorney Michael Bowen wrote in remarks about his decision not to file charges. “It is also clear that there was sufficient probable cause for the arrest of the defendant for his failure to follow the instruction of the deputy regarding moving his vehicle from the private property where it was parked.

However, there is no reasonable likelihood of success at trial due to the fact that the State must prove the case beyond and to the exclusion of every reasonable doubt, which is a much higher burden of proof than probable cause. Therefore, no formal charges will be filed.”

Charges were dropped Dec. 9, according to court records.“Well, he was arrested while engaged in constitutionally protected activity and some deputies from Brevard County screwed up,” said Gray’s attorney, Eric Friday. “A citizen with a camera is just like any other journalist and has the same rights to film what’s going on in a public space.” Contact Ford at aford@floridatoday. com, 321-242-3601 or follow @andrewfordnews.

K&N Pro Series West Race Added to Exciting 2014 Irwindale Event Schedule–
March 22 Event Now Included in
2014 Season Ticket Package!

After a long two-year absence from the Irwindale Speedway fast half-mile, the white-hot K&N Pro Series West will return to the track that they call “LA’s Half-Mile SuperSpeedway” on the evening of Saturday March 22, 2013.

“This is an exciting addition to our schedule for us and for all of our fans,” said Irwindale Event Center President/CEO Jim Cohan. “The K&N Pro Series is one of the most colorful, most competitive series in NASCAR. We’re really looking forward to welcoming the series and all the competitors back to this facility.”

The NASCAR Home Track event will run in conjunction with and compliment the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Auto Club Speedway that will run there on Sunday afternoon, March 23.

The big news is that the Irwindale management has decided to add the March 22 K&N event to the just-announced 2014 season ticket package at no extra charge, giving NASCAR fans a terrific season-long, 18-event (March to November) racing deal that’s valued at $285 for only $99.*

The K&N race will, of course, be the track’s first oval track event of the new year, so naturally it will be thought of as ‘Opening Night 2014’. “The good news is, that for the first time since the Speedway opened in 1999, we’ll be able celebrate twin ‘Opening Nights'”, said Cohan. “The first one with the K&N race on ‘Cup weekend, and the second one on Saturday, April 5, when we kick off our Whelen All-American Series which runs all the way through October, we think that it will really make Irwindale’s season fifteen special,” he added.

GLOBAL MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY PROJECTED EXPANSION–
The Global Motorcycle Industry is projected to reach $93.67 Billion by 2017, according to Lucintel, a leading global management consulting and market research firm. Lucintel has analyzed the top five global motorcycle companies and offers its findings in a comprehensive research report in “Top Five Global Motorcycle Companies: Performance, Strategies, and Competitive Analysis.”

Lucintel observes the evolving of the global motorcycle industry, competitive landscape, and corporate and marketing strategies adopted by the motorcycle companies as some of the factors to have remarkably impacted the global motorcycle industry dynamics.

The market witnessed splendid growth during 2006-2011 but is likely to grow with reduced pace to reach an estimated $93.67 billion by 2017. The competitive landscape of the global motorcycle industry has had fluctuations over the last five years which affected the top five companies.

Lucintel found that the market size or revenue, average operating profit, average net profit, and annual growth rate are some of the driving forces of these companies. Buyers power, degree of competition, and threats of new entrants and substitutes also affect this market.

Following are the top five companies of the global motorcycle industry: Honda Motor Company Limited; Yamaha Motor Company Limited; Hero MotoCorp Limited; Bajaj Auto Limited; and Harley–Davidson Incorporation.

Developing regions, such as Asia and Latin America, which perceive two-wheelers as a basic mode of transportation, are expected to remain the most promising markets for scooters, light motorcycles, and mopeds. A combination of factors such as demographic condition, economic condition, and environmental regulations is seen to have important impact on market dynamics.

For a detailed table of contents and pricing information on these insightful industry reports, contact Lucintel at (972) 636-5056 or visit www.lucintel.com.

NEW JERSEY Teens locked in cop van split $360K — Three teenagers who were left overnight locked in a police van will split $360,000 under a settlement reached with a northern New Jersey town. They alleged they spent about 15 hours in the van without food, water, bathrooms and warm clothing after Fort Lee police broke up a house party in March 2011.

The teens claimed police intentionally inflicted emotional distress, were negligent and showed racial bias. Two of the teens are of Korean descent. Fort Lee’s attorney said none of the parties named in the lawsuit admit any guilt or liability under the settlement. The youths were rescued by a passer-by. — Associated Press

It did me good to read one of your stories again. I didn’t know you were still around.

I use to read your stories to my son way back when, and one made a particular impression. It explained when you finally realized you were working your ass off to keep up and pay for all the toys. You sold your shit and rode off on your bike.

My son was just starting college, and I could see from his decisions later, he at least thought about the results of your decision and made some of his choices because of that. Thank you for that.

BEWARE OF MOTORCYCLE BANS–Intelligent Transport Systems: Can powered two wheelers benefit from new technologies deployment?

5-6 March 2014
European Parliament, Brussels

The 3rd European Motorcyclists’ Forum is at the door. This year’s Forum will focus on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the context of the Horizon 2020 initiative.

Powered Two Wheeler (PTW) users are market consumers using new technology to improve their riding experience or to increase their safety. But, as Vulnerable Road Users, they are also impacted by ITS deployment. The specificities of this transport mode need to be carefully understood and integrated into ITS deployment activities to guarantee that PTW use is rightly integrated into tomorrow’s transport system.

The Forum – organized under the umbrella of the RIDERSCAN project – will discuss the safety challenges faced by powered two wheelers (PTWs) in an ever more connected transport system and exchange over:
•EU transport/mobility challenges, safety strategies and the role of ITS – EU policy orientations and motorcycling integration;
•Motorcycling and ITS challenges, addressing research and deployment issues; practical considerations related to the use of PTWs in Europe;
•Priorities and challenges faced by the motorcycling sector both at EU and national level;

•Recommendations for optimal integration of PTWs into ITS-driven policies.

The event, kindly hosted by MEP Bernd Lange, will open in the European Parliament premises on March 5th 2014 (from 3 to 6pm). Discussions will continue on March 6th, all day, at the Thon Hotel Brussels City Centre.

For more information and to follow the preparation of the event, please access our website or our Twitter page (#EMF2014).

For sponsoring opportunities and the possibility to expose, please contact Aline Delhaye.

Closing date for registration is 21 February 2014. Seats are limited.

FEMA ALERT: Reasonable compromise reached on EU technical inspection schemes for motorcycles–On December 18, the Lithuanian Presidency announced agreement with the Parliament on the controversial road worthiness package. Millions of powered two-wheeler (PTW) users in Europe see the spectre of harmonized periodical inspections fading away

Yesterday, Member States and Parliament finally reached agreement on the road worthiness testing package under the Lithuanian Presidency: the heavy motorcycles will be subject to periodic roadworthiness tests from 2022. However, Member States may exclude these vehicles from testing if they have put in place alternative effective road safety measures, taking into account in particular road safety statistics of the 5 years. If heavy motorcycles are included in the scope of periodic roadworthiness testing, specific testing methods, inspection areas and frequency are decided at the Member State level (Source: Lithuanian Presidency website).

FEMA, the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations, welcomes the compromise reached, and happily notes that common sense has prevailed in the end despite heavy corporate lobby from the testing industry. FEMA has heavily criticised the Commission’s proposal to harmonise periodical technical inspections for L-category as useless and expensive while based on a testing industry biased impact assessment.
