Hey,
I kicked off a discussion about the holidays, or lack there of. Sin Wu liked to say, “We’re too broke for the holidays.” And we often didn’t have a tree. Since some of the girls are missing in action, Ray C. Wheeler, the esteemed Bikernet Performance Editor in Chief, volunteered to handle outdoor decorations, and this coming weekend the holiday spirit will take the shape of the Ultimate Builder show in Long Beach, the Mooneyes Show, and the David Mann Chopper Fest in Ventura.
The Ultimate Builder staff, and the staff of Iron Works are staying at the Bikernet Headquarters, so the party will be constantly underway. I have a feeling the month will be gone in the blink of an eye, along with the Holidays. Some years the Holidays seem to linger forever, but not this one.
So fuck it, let’s hit the news:

MRF Breaking News!
Another Federal Government Agency Gets it Wrong, Again–
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently issued a report on the motorcycle safety grants known as the Section 2010 motorcycle safety grant program. The program has been wildly successful at infusing much needed financial resources directly into the motorcycle safety community.
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) was instrumental in getting the grant program set up and running. Currently the money, over $45 million over the past 6 years, can only be used for educational purposes. Those can be anything from paying instructors, buying new training bikes and equipment, to public education efforts such as “look twice” campaigns.
What the GAO is suggesting is that congress change the language so that the monies can be used for other purposes, such as helmet use campaigns. The MRF does not agree with this. The original intent of congress with the grant program was to reduce fatalities through crash avoidance techniques, not through safer crashing, as the GAO believes we should.
The GAO estimates are just that, a guess. The fact is that the GAO did not really do any new studies or research. They simply recycled the same tired talking points that are used by any number of government or quasi government groups.
This isn’t the first time motorcyclists have been painted in a bad light, calling us a social burden on America’s health care system. The MRF disagrees with that.
Critics and the uninformed believe that motorcyclists, helmeted or not, account for a super majority of health care costs, from trauma room to long-term care. The problem is that’s just not true. There are not a lot of studies on social burden, but more than enough to soundly and logically deflate the social burden myth around motorcyclists.
The Journal of American Medicine, one of the most respected of all medical publications, published the findings of a 1988 study on the subject of the public costs of motorcycle related injury at a specific Seattle, WA hospital. The results clearly showed that of all costs to sort out a motorcycle injured patient, 63.4% of the bill was paid out with taxpayer dollars. That’s an astoundingly high cost, no question, but what the study goes on to say is that the public cost of any injury at that same Seattle treatment center was 67%, 3.6% higher. Statistical dead heat.
There is also a little more to that story because the public cost of health care is about 45% currently, and was significantly less than that in the mid-eighties when the study was conducted. The facility used for the study was Harborview, a division of the University of Washington, and one of the largest and state-of-the art facilities in the Seattle region. Because of that the facility sees most of the worst-case scenarios routinely,
a similar study done by the University of North Carolina also found that there was no statistical difference in public cost to treat motorcycle related injury over any other type of injury.
It’s also important to keep things in perspective. Last year the public share of motorcycle related injuries were 0.001% of the entire public health care cost.
The MRF will keep you updated on this issue.
PerformanceFI released a new version of its Pegasus Electronic Fuel Injection kit specifically for Harley-Davidson Twin Cam engines. A number of years in design, the new kit has all the features of the award-winning Pegasus EVO kit and delivers the outstanding torque and horsepower that Harley riders want and expect. With the addition of the new kit to its product line, this kind of enhanced performance is now available from PerformanceFI for all electric-start Harley V-Twin engines and clones from 1965 to 2013.
The kit can be installed on any Twin Cam motorcycle but will be especially welcome for Harley owners with the early Magneti Marelli fuel injection system. There is no longer a reason to convert those bikes to carburetion and lose the advantages of EFI. The Pegasus kit completely replaces the fuel management and ignition systems that have been troublesome on those motorcycles. It eliminates the low horsepower, hesitation, poor mileage, and other performance issues that have been problems for the Magneti Marelli equipped Harleys.
The kit includes everything needed to completely switch out the fuel and ignition systems on a Twin Cam bike: throttle body, air cleaner, ECU, fuel pump, fuel filter, petcock, coil, and all necessary wiring and fuel lines. The special Magneti Marelli kit does not contain some of these parts that are already in the fuel tank, but some owners may want to purchase the full kit to give them maximum flexibility for switching out their fuel tank.
Pegasus for the Twin Cam is not, however, just for replacing a stock EFI. It is also perfect for builders who want to use a Twin Cam engine as their power platform and who want to deliver real power to their customers.
Mil Blair, technical consultant to PerformanceFI, explains why he is impressed by the Twin Cam version of the Pegasus system. “We have seen clear improvements in performance when we removed a stock Twin Cam system and installed the Pegasus unit. On one 80 in. Harley engine we saw a jump from 55 hp to 75 hp by making the switch. We also saw the engine running cooler by 30 degrees and an increase in gas mileage by 10 mpg. I think this type of power boost will be really attractive to riders looking for torque and horsepower increases, like guys riding heavy baggers.”

BROTHERS INVESTIGATE BILLY THE KID’S GRAVE– It has gotten a little cold here in the Carolinas but not so bad you can’t ride. The picture is of my friend Al, from Wyoming, and myself in front of Billy the Kid’s grave. I am the handsome one on the right!
Al and I try and get in a cross-country ride once a year and usually log around 5000 or 6000 miles in about two weeks.
When I get back home and people ask where I have been and I tell them their usual response is something like , “Well, I guess you have had enough riding for the year.”
I love the look on their face when I tell them “Hell no, I am gonna change oil and go again!!”

I am addicted to SAMCRO. Unfortunately all movies and televisions shows undergo censor board cuts in India. I am sorry to say that the TV airs censored pile of shit. The DVD of the seasons are available here at a ridiculous price – and what you get in return – half the show chopped off by the Indian censor board. I have no choice but to be a pirate about it – viva la torrents.
BTW: Is it betrayal that I still have a HarleyDavidson leather jacket on my wishlist instead of SAMCRO merchandise? Somebody mail me a good HD leather before Santa Claus comes and beats me up for eating his milk and cookies.

FLORIDA TOY RUN RIDERS GET READY–
Written by Andrew Ford – FLORIDA TODAY
Thousands of motorcycles soon will roar through central Brevard County as part of a charity event to gather gifts for children.
Bikers will don Santa hats and deck out their bikes with decorations and gifts for the 31st annual ABATE of Florida toy run Sunday. The caravan starts from the Merritt Square Mall parking lot at noon, weaving west on State Road 520, south on U.S. 1 and then west on Post Road to the Wickham Park pavilion, just south of Brevard Community College.
Drivers will encounter roadblocks as traffic at certain intersections along the route will be stopped until all the bikes pass.
“The traffic is backed up for probably about an hour or so,” said Maj. Bruce Barnett of Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Barnett said motorcycle units from the agency will escort the procession.
“At one time, it’s been said we collect up to $200,000 worth of toys,” said Mike Pope, president of the Brevard chapter of ABATE. “I’m expecting about the same turnout, if not more.
“The generosity of the biker community hasn’t changed a whole lot even though their pockets have been hurt by the economy.”
The event will feature music, food and drinks — as well as an attraction where participants can pay to hit a junk car with a sledgehammer. Entry to the pavilion will be granted in exchange for a toy or $10.
Organizers expect between 6,000 and 8,000 motorcycles to be part of the event, with lineup at the mall beginning at 8 a.m.

Assalt Weapan Bonneville 2007 Effort, Chapter 2
Here’s a link to one of my Mudflap Girl FXR techs. Paul Cavallo at Spitfire uses two seat coil over shocks with 300 pound rated springs. They are a tad tough, so I found a Rockshox, removed the 500 lb. spring and installed the taller 300 pound job. It allowed me to re-install the shock and lower the bike if I wanted.
I was concerned about travel. The problem with Rockshox or other high dollar bike shocks is the price. I believe I also looked at Fox shocks. I wanted to run a shock with at least 2 inches of travel, which could amount to 6 inches at the axle. Sugar Bear suggested that the shock run parallel to the neck, so I repositioned the shock the last time I mounted it. It seems to work well.–Bandit

GUN-RELATED VIOLENT CRIME WAY DOWN–
Gun-related violent crime in Virginia has dropped steadily over the past six years as the sale of firearms has soared to a new record, according to an analysis of state crime data with state records of gun sales.
The total number of firearms purchased in Virginia increased 73 percent from 2006 to 2011. When state population increases are factored in, gun purchases per 100,000 Virginians rose 63 percent.
But the total number of gun-related violent crimes fell 24 percent over that period, and when adjusted for population, gun-related offenses dropped more than 27 percent, from 79 crimes per 100,000 in 2006 to 57 crimes in 2011.
The numbers appear to contradict a long-running popular narrative that more guns cause more violent crime, said Virginia Commonwealth University professor Thomas R. Baker, who compared Virginia crime data for those years with gun-dealer sales estimates obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

BIKERNET 5-Ball RACING WHEELER REPORT–
Bonneville, SCTA August 10-16, 2013
BUB Speed Trials August 24-29, 2013
2nd Grandchild, June
(BUB 9 months and counting)
Hop on and hang on tight, we’re headed into 2013 blazin’ with an endless list to close out this year and prep for a fresh start in January.
On top of our latest greatest hit list is the IMS show in Long Beach next weekend. Bikernet and your Bikernet 5-Ball Racing Team will load five Bonneville racers and roll to the show with a bag full of goodies, be sure to check out the hot rods and stop by the Bikernet booth where we’ll have lots of cool shit to give away. Sorry, we have no more hot sauce this year.
Here’s an inside look at a few of the details tucked under the Air Tech Streamlining of our 124 inch Twin Cam Raycer build. The latest conclusion is, we are not late for last year’s meet, but we may be early for this year’s with lots of road miles to test and dial in the Raycer’s handling, stopping and performance aspects in real-life conditions. Might have to change the gearing just a little for the streets and highway.
While building the Aerocharger Turbo system we decided to add a second set of injectors rather than an inner-cooler. The system was desgned by Dan Thayer in New York. The injector block was engineered by Rick Tedder in Salem, Or at R/T Performance. The injectors will add fuel yielding more horsepower, torque and assist in cooling the engine while the boost pressure increases.
The injectors are built into the face of the air plenum with a fuel pump providing constant flow through 1/2 inch fuel lines connected to a Pingel petcock controlling the ins-and-outs. We also have an oil cooler plumbed and mounted on the outer primary with 2 built in fans that will run full time. Once we’re on the road we’ll test all systems and report in with the running-in-real-life-details.
Building the fuel lines was a blast, first test we found one small leak that stopped with slight tightening of the fitting exiting the second fuel filter located in the tail section. Fuel flows toward the air plenum from the back of the bike on the right side.
Ace is the place and luckily only two blocks from the Beach Racing shop in Morgan Hill.
To protect the under carriage we fabricated 2 simple pieces of aluminum from the Ace stock rack, drilled, countersunk and bolted to the bottom edge of the body work. We knew the stock in the nut and bolt section better than the hired help.
We’re mocking up the Lyndall Racing Brakes composite rotors for the front wheel. The rotors are lightweight with the latest composite materials on the planet for superior handling and stopping power with Lyndall friction pads. Lightweight wheels are on our short list for the 2013 season.
The 3 spoke Busa rear wheel utilizes cush-drive technology for an easier power transfer when rollin on the roads or at Bonneville, thumbing the Pingel air shifter at red line with the Aerocharger Turbo hummin’ a happy tune. We installed Schnitz Racing rear wheel cush Drive Dampers, engineered for a tight ride, along with all new seals, washers and bearings in the wheels, neck and swing arm.
A special thanks to Brad Beach at the Beach Racing facility. Less than a month ago in Morgan Hill and we’re nearly road and track worthy.
See ya at the Long Beach show if your in the neighborhood. If not, stay tuned for a full report after the show in the news.
Haul Ass!

SPEAKING OF THE HOLIDAYS–Do the Holidays Stress You Out? The holidays can bring joy, comfort and peace – but for some, it can also bring unhealthy stress. Use the Sunday Weekend Tips throughout this month for simple ways to de-stress that everyone can use, courtesy of Dr. Weil’s website SpontaneousHappiness.com.
Including breath work into your daily routine can lower stress and improve overall health. Dr. Weil’s favorite breath work exercise is the 4-7-8 breath. Briefly, you begin by breathing in through your nose for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of seven, then exhale through your mouth to a count of eight. This is repeated for four breath cycles.

AAA SAYS CERTAIN ETHANOL FUELS CAN DAMAGE CARS– The recently approved use of E15 fuel made from blending gasoline and ethanol could damage vehicles and void warranties says the American Automobile Association (AAA), which is urging the federal government to ban it from the market.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the fuel earlier this summer, but AAA says only five percent of vehicles on the road are approved by the manufacturers to use the special blend they say causes significant problems such as accelerated engine wear and failure, fuel-system damage and false “check engine” warning lights.
The auto club conducted a recent survey it says identifies confusion among consumers as to which vehicles can use the fuel — 95 percent of those surveyed had never heard of E15, which contains 15 percent ethanol.
“It is clear that millions of Americans are unfamiliar with E15, which means there is a strong possibility that many motorists may improperly fill up using this gasoline and damage their vehicle,” said Robert Darbelnet, AAA president. “Bringing E15 to the market without adequate safeguards does not responsibly meet the needs of consumers.”
Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), former chairman of the House Science Committee, said the findings confirm concerns on Capitol Hill that the fuel can damage cars.
Gasoline blended with 10 percent ethanol is readily available at most gas stations nationwide, but E15 is only sold at a few stations in Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.
“Concerns about E15 are not diminishing, they are increasing. That is telling,” Sensenbrenner said. “When an organization like AAA, a nationally trusted source for motorists, calls out the EPA, you would think the administration would listen.”
The EPA has not yet responded to the AAA’s request.
Several manufactures including BMW, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagon are refusing to cover vehicle warranties for damage caused by E15. More are signaling they will follow suit, including General Motors, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, according to AAA.
The only vehicles currently approved by automakers to use E15 are flex-fuel models manufactured in 2001 and after, including some Porsches, General Motors and Ford. The use of E15 is expressly prohibited in heavy-duty vehicles including boats, motorcycles, power equipment, lawn mowers and off-road vehicles.
“The sale and use of E15 should be suspended until additional gas pump labeling and consumer education efforts are implemented to mitigate problems for motorists and their vehicles,” Darbelnet said. ”Consumers should carefully read pump labels and know their auto manufacturer’s recommendations to help prevent any problems from E15.”

DATE: October 1, 2012
RE: Gala Christmas Party
I’m happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place on December 23rd, starting at noon in the private function room at the Grill House. There will be a cash bar and plenty of drinks! We’ll have a small band playing traditional carols… feel free to sing along. And don’t be surprised if our CEO shows up dressed as Santa Claus! A Christmas tree will be lit at 1:00 PM. Exchanges of gifts among employees can be done at that time; however, no gift should be over $10.00 to make the giving of gifts easy for everyone’s pockets. This gathering is only for employees!
Our CEO will make a special announcement at that time!
Merry Christmas to you and your family,

In no way was yesterday’s memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees. We recognize that Hanukkah is an important holiday, which often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year. However, from now on, we’re calling it our “Holiday Party.”
The same policy applies to any other employees who are not Christians and to those still celebrating Reconciliation Day. There will be no Christmas tree and no Christmas carols will be sung. We will have other types of music for your enjoyment.
Happy now?
Happy Holidays to you and your family,

Somebody?
And sorry, but forget about the gift exchange, no gifts are allowed since the union members feel that $10.00 is too much money and the executives believe $10.00 is a little chintzy.
REMEMBER: NO GIFTS EXCHANGE WILL BE ALLOWED.

RE: Generic Holiday Party
What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during daylight hours. There goes the party!
Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees’ beliefs. Perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party or else package everything for you to take it home. Will that work?
Meanwhile, I’ve arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet, and pregnant women will get the table closest to the restrooms.
Gays are allowed to sit with each other. Lesbians do not have to sit with Gay men, each group will have their own table.Yes, there will be flower arrangement for the Gay men’s table.
To the person asking permission to cross dress, the Grill House asks that no cross-dressing be allowed, apparently because of concerns about confusion in the restrooms. Sorry.
We will have booster seats for short people.
Low-fat food will be available for those on a diet.
I am sorry to report that we cannot control the amount of salt used in the food . The Grill House suggests that people with high blood pressure taste a bite first.
There will be fresh “low sugar” fruits as dessert for diabetics, but the restaurant cannot supply “no sugar” desserts. Sorry!
Did I miss anything?!?!?

WEEKEND LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM THE NRA–Institute for Legislative Action (ILA) is the “lobbying” arm of the National Rifle Association of America.
Just over two weeks ago, the U.S. Senate voted 84-12 to advance S. 3525, “The Sportsmen’s Act of 2012.” However, this week, by a 50-41 vote, the bill suffered a setback when the Senate failed to clear a procedural hurdle and move on to finish work on the bill. There is still time to get this critically important legislation passed, but you must act now!
S. 3525 is an essential piece of legislation focused on the expansion and enhancement of hunting, recreational fishing and shooting on federal public land. But it’s more than that. Of critical importance is the fact that, in addition to promoting land access, S. 3525 would amend the “Toxic Substances Control Act” to prevent this and future administrations from using the Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate the right of hunters, shooters and anglers to use traditional ammunition and fishing tackle.
The bill would amend the law to clarify that the EPA does not have the authority to regulate shot, bullets or sport fishing equipment.
The bill also allows for the importation of polar bears legally taken from approved populations in Canada before the 2008 ban.
S. 3525 could come up for a vote at any time, so please act now to secure support for this critically important bill that would prevent the EPA from regulating your ammunition! Please contact your U.S. Senators TODAY and ask them to support S. 3525.
You can find contact information for your U.S. Senators by using the “Write your Representatives” tool at www.NRAILA.org. You may also contact your Senators by phone at (202) 224-3121.
What The Fuck Does The EPA Have To do With This?
It is bad enough they fuck with motorcyclist all the time over bullshit and now guns.
It appears EPA has too much time and money and maybe needs a Budget Cut, especially in this bad economy, stop wasting my taxpayer money on shit like this.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY SPIRIT VOCABULARY LESSON–empurple em-PUR-puhl, verb:
On one side are baby grapes whose petals yet fall; on another the clusters empurple towards full growth.
Magnificent weather, one of those sun risings that empurple landscapes, left the river all its limpid serenity.
Empurple originated in the late 1580s from the Greek prefix em- meaning ‘to become’ and the color ‘purple,’ a word of Tyrian descent for the shellfish from which purple dye was made.

WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW?—A brother calls and says, “Let’s have a Holiday party.”
And so the preparations begin. Ray C. Wheeler and I had an hour long sit-down, note-taking discussion last night. He’s taking care of the holiday decorations to our ghetto building. Sin Wu will cook, and I’ll get drunk. Today we are painting rooms, welding doors, cleaning the shop, detailing bikes, and trying to click a couple of items off the list.
John Stein will be in our booth next weekend in Long Beach signing his book, “History of Motorcycle Drag Racing.” Come by and check out our new apparel line. We will have Bonneville books available and I’ll be around to sign Orwell or Chance books.
Tomorrow I’ll launch Paul Cavallo’s feature with the popular Queen Esther. It’s going to be a very busy week.
