Hey,
Just when life seems to calm slightly, someone tries a new mapping system in the computer and threatens the industry with disarray once more. Guess that keeps life stimulating.
It’s like your pal who can’t keep a job. He goes to work anywhere with the best intentions, then his or her personality feeds into the mix. Soon there’s a problem. It’s one of our toughest challenges in life, to look in a mirror, understand ourselves, and change. Very demanding and tough, almost impossible in many situations. Folks mostly want to look outward, no inward.
Let’s hit the news and watch as the chips fall over the next few weeks. Fortunately, our Bikernet team is still intact and moving toward the New Year with a positive mantra. We are studying our Bagger audience with the help of David Campbell.
All three of our sites will be improved as we roll into 2015. Ben Lamboeuf is doing a helluva job with our blog and is about to start road testing new H-D models. I will have a new book published soon. We may have a deal with a magazine. And we are here daily, if you need anything.
I mean that. If you want to see any particular motorcycling notion covered, drop me a line. If you feel we need to change anything, scribble us a note. If you need help with any project, same deal. If we can help, we will. Bandit@bikernet.com

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH)– Former State Trooper Aaron Huntsman is sentenced to five years behind bars with one year mandatory after he stole a gold chain, crucifix, and nearly $4,000 from a dying man.
Back in September 2012, Huntsman responded to a motorcycle wreck on the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield County. While EMT’s tried to save John Scalesse’s, 45, life they gave Huntsman the cross and chain for safekeeping.
Then, prosecutors said his own dashboard camera caught him taking the cash to his car. When the Scalesse family asked about the belongings, he lied saying he didn’t know where they were according to the prosecutor. Pictures showed he even wedged the money underneath the front seat of his cruiser.
Scalesse’s mother Marguerite recounted when she saw her son later that night:
“I leaned over and kissed my son’s still handsome face. I petted his beautiful hair. I told him how much I loved him and how proud I was to be his mother not knowing at this time that my son’s belongings were stashed under the passenger seat of Huntsman’s cruiser,” said Marguerite Scalesse in court.
Huntsman apologized through tears,”I just want the court, the family, and those present here that care about me to know that the man that stands here today deserves to be punished.” He continued,”I’m truly sorry for everything, the pain the suffering…not even realizing the symbol of the crucifix caused so much hurt.”
Outside of court, Scalesse’s mother said she didn’t believe his apology.
“The fact that he lied to me three times in the morgue makes me say of course it’s not real,” said Marguerite. She said, “This officer, to extend a hand of crime when it should have been a hand of comfort is tormenting.”
Huntsman’s attorney said his client served in the military 20 years, then became a State Trooper, and he even received awards for heroic acts while on the force. He said it was his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and addiction to alcohol and pain medications that led him to steal.
Family members said they hope this criminal act doesn’t cloud John’s legacy.
John’s lifelong girlfriend said, “I would just like them to remember how sweet and loving and fun loving and life loving and happy he was as a person not remember him for this.”
As a part of his sentence the judge ordered him to substance abuse and mental health treatment. Plus, he as to do community service.

BIKERNET OFFICIAL PHILOSOPHER REFLECTS ON HIS CANADIAN THANKSGIVING—Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough. –Oprah Winfrey
This past weekend was our Thanksgiving Weekend in Canada. I must say it was one of the best that I have ever had. My youngest daughter has purchased a beautiful vacation home in the mountains and she invited my Wife, my older Daughter and her boyfriend, a friend and my amazing Granddaughters for the Thanksgiving Weekend. For the last three days I found so many reasons to be grateful for. Mostly I was Grateful that I was together with friends and family who Love each other.
One of our family traditions is during the Thanksgiving meal to take turns and each of us shares one or more things that we are grateful for. It was such a beautiful experience to hear how we all shared and all stated in one way or another how happy we were to be together as a family.
I have said many times through my writings how important it is to Pause and take inventory of how much we are grateful for, not just one day a year but every day of the year.
Each morning I begin with a minimum of five things I am grateful for. It helps me find the balance I need throughout my day. One thing I have learned over the last 60 years is it could always be much worse and there is always something better around the corner.
Having a gratitude journal has helped me through many tough times. I promise you that if you choose to be grateful on a daily basis that your Life will have more meaning and continue to improve.
As I have said many times today is a Gift, be thankful for it and Live it to the most.
And So It Is

JEWELER SUPPORTS BREAST CANCER RESEARCH—from Dan Hawkins
GET OUT AND VOTE–California: Are You a Registered Second Amendment Voter?-
The general election on November 4 is less than a month away and California CANNOT afford to have any more anti-gun state legislators elected into office.
Never miss another election again with California’s new voter registration technologies and permanent vote by-mail balloting! The power to win elections is in your hands.
Before you vote, whether by Vote-by-Mail or at the polls on Election Day, November 4, 2014, go to the NRA website and review NRA-PVF’s grades and endorsements in all of the races in which you are eligible to vote.
Go here: https://www.nrapvf.org/grades/california/
Or to print out a complete copy of all races go here:
http://cms.nraila.org/media/13466353/california_2014.pdf
Many Californians who believe in the right to keep and bear arms mistakenly believe that their vote won’t make a difference. They are wrong! Becoming a permanent vote by-mail voter helps increase voter turnout significantly enough to swing elections! If every single gun owner and believer in the right to keep and bear arms registered to vote and always voted by mail, we could turn back the onslaught of gun bans coming from state and local politicians in California.
If you are not a registered voter, please click here. After you register to vote, you can become a permanent vote by-mail voter at www.sos.ca.gov/elections/vote-by-mail/pdf/fill-in-vote-by-mail-app-instruct.pdf.
If you are already registered to vote and would like to use the convenience of voting by mail, please click here.
The last day to register to vote in the 2014 general election is October 20.
The last day to apply to vote by mail is October 28.
Register to vote now and help the Second Amendment in California! California is living proof of the truth of the slippery slope of ever-expanding gun bans. But if every gun owner and Second Amendment supporter voted in every election, the tide would be turned! Help make it happen – Register to Vote Today!
Don’t wait to the last day to exercise your important right to vote, because our right to vote is what is needed to save our right to keep and bear arms!

BAD COP INVESTIGATION–Internal affairs: Sergeant violated department rules
By Andrew Ford
FLORIDA TODAY
An internal affairs investigation has determined that a Melbourne police sergeant violated department policies after guns were stolen from his home. The 594page report says Melbourne Police Sgt. Jamie Rocque violated 10 department policies, including operating within legal constraints, honesty and professional competence.
A letter from Chief Steve Mimbs to Rocque says Mimbs would make a final decision Monday on firing Rocque. Messages left for Mimbs were not returned. “Based upon my review, I find that your pattern of conduct displayed is egregious,” he wrote. “This conduct is very disturbing, evidences a lack of proper judgment, and is entirely inconsistent with the role of a police officer.”
Records allege Rocque’s girlfriend helped her crack dealer steal Rocque’s guns on June 27, while he was away from home. He didn’t carry any handgun when he worked a patrol shift on June 30. That night, Rocque crashed his personal car into a ditch, his girlfriend and her child were with him. Two people who reported the crash described him as intoxicated. The first officer to respond to the crash told an investigator Rocque and his girlfriend appeared intoxicated, and after the crash they wandered around the street. Rocque insisted he be allowed to go to Taco Bell, but gestured in the opposite direction of the fast food restaurant. Another officer said Rocque said he had a few drinks but was OK to drive.
After Rocque’s car was pulled from the ditch, Officer Charlie Braden drove it to Rocque’s home. “Uh, he shouldn’t have been driving it from that point forward,” Braden told an investigator, saying he could smell alcohol on Rocque, adding he didn’t consider Rocque “to be in … sound mind.” Lt. Pete Mercaldo told investigators “… (Rocque) probably was drinking, but I didn’t think that he was beyond the, uh, the legal limit.”
Mercaldo brought Rocque and his girlfriend home and later brought them food. Another night, Rocque went to a house where he thought his guns might be. He called the department and told two responding officers to knock on the door, and if his girlfriend answered, grab her and bring her to a van he was riding in. Rocque attempted to “take police actions without a weapon, radio, identification, badge or shoes,” according to the report.
The report says Rocque was untruthful about his knowledge of his girlfriend’s drug use. Melbourne police officers are supposed to avoid associating with “persons of ill repute,” and Rocque’s girlfriend has a criminal history.

Tacoma motorcyclist, club settle with Kennewick in public records lawsuit:
BY KRISTI PIHL
Tri-City HeraldOctober 13, 2014
KENNEWICK — The city of Kennewick has settled with a Tacoma motorcyclist and a motorcycle club over accusations it violated the state Public Records Act.
The city will pay $45,000 as part of the settlement of the two lawsuits and release some of the disputed records, according to City Attorney Lisa Beaton.
The city has not admitted any wrongdoing in the handling of the records requests filed by Edward Goehring and Washington Confederation of Clubs.
Both separately sued Kennewick, contending they were improperly denied documents, including photos and videos, that Kennewick police took when they cited motorcyclists in separate incidents.
Goehring was one of eight motorcyclists stopped by Kennewick police and Benton County sheriff’s deputies in August 2012 and cited for traffic violations.
In April 2013, authorities stopped some motorcyclists from the Washington Confederation of Clubs and cited them for traffic infractions during a gathering in Kennewick.
In both cases, Kennewick police pursued information about outlaw motorcycle gangs, Beaton said.
The city, Goehring and the motorcycle club still disagree about some records. They have agreed to have a third-party arbitrator review the records to decide which should be withheld or redacted and then released, Beaton said.
About $12,400 of the $45,000 settlement will go to the motorcycle club, and Goehring will receive the remainder.
As part of the agreement, Goehring and the motorcycle club will dismiss their lawsuits with prejudice, which means they can’t be filed again.

When it comes to buying clothing to wear while riding, partying or just going out – where do you go?
When it comes to buying clothing to wear while riding, partying or just going out – where do you go? Harley-Davidson Fashion has always been a good, solid, standby and for many years that was often the only choice we had. Or we used to have to buy men’s clothing and make do with the fit. In order to get a perfect fit you could also pay a lot of money to have a handmade, measured to fit garment.
Nowadays there are a lot of brands that specialize in offering women’s motorcycle gear, aimed at women and cut and fit specifically for women.

Americans citizens are protected from unreasonable search and seizure under the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution. But there has been a continued encroachment and reinterpretation of Fourth Amendment protections, especially at checkpoints and during traffic stops. So exactly what are your rights and how can you invoke them?

ROAD WEASELS, A Tribute To Ross Tomas—
After the tragic premature death of their only child,Ross, Mike and Carolyn Tomas, owners of Kiwi Indian Motorcycles in Riverside,California, decided to begin creating a new legacy in their son’s name. They have started a motorcycle group called the Road Weasels. This is already an International group and consists of both riders and non riders alike.
The entire focus of the group is to emulate their son’s sense of humor, love of life, and general kindness toward others. These are the people who will be proud to wear the colors of the Road Weasels. The group has a web site at www.roadweasels.com . The membership fee is $40 (annually) and includes a tee shirt, tank decal and jacket patch as well as a commemorative poker chip with the Road Weasel logo on one side and the Round The World logo on the reverse side.
In addition, the establishment of the Ross Tomas Foundation has begun. Funds generated through the Road Weasels group ,as well as any donations, will be funneled to this foundation and its underlying program called YEP. This acronym stands for Youth Enrichment Program. YEP will be used to fund scholarships and provide a helping hand to young men and women who desire to pursue further education and need some help to reach their goals. There will be an application process as well as a governing board making funding decisions.
Joining Road Weasels is easy and promises to be extremely rewarding. There will be a number of events during the year as well as a news letter to keep members up to date on happenings. ALL riders are welcome join regardless of the type or brand of bike you ride. We even have members who do not have a motorcycle but love the concept of what being a Road Weasel stands for.

THE PROBLEM OF THE WEEK–We’re not the only ones that see this as a problem…
The Centers for Everything But Disease Control
by Michelle Malkin
Creators Syndicate
So now the federal health bureaucrats in charge of controlling diseases and pandemics want more money to do their jobs. Hmph. Maybe if they hadn’t been so busy squandering their massive government subsidies on everything but their core mission, we taxpayers might actually feel a twinge of sympathy.
At $7 billion, the Centers for Disease Control 2014 budget is nearly 200 percent bigger now than it was in 2000. Those evil, stingy Republicans actually approved CDC funding increases in January larger than what President Obama requested.
Money, money, it’s always the money. Yet, while Ebola and enterovirus D68 wreak havoc on our health system, the CDC has been busying itself with an ever-widening array of non-disease control campaigns, like these recent crusades:
Mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden appoints a 15-member “Community Preventive Services Task Force” to promote pet Nanny State projects. An obscure Obamacare rule–Section 4003(b)(1)–stealthily increased the task force’s authority to study “any policies, programs, processes or activities designed to affect or otherwise affecting health at the population level.”
Last year, the meddling panel extended the agency’s reach into transportation safety with a call to impose a federal universal motorcycle helmet law on the country. Is riding a Harley a disease? Why is this the CDC’s business?
Video games and TV violence. At Obama’s behest, in the wake of high-profile school shootings, the CDC scored $10 million last year to study violent video games and media images, as well as to assess “existing strategies for preventing gun violence and identifying the most pressing research questions, with the greatest potential public health impact.” Whatever that means. Why is this the CDC’s business?
Playground equipment. The CDC’s “Injury Centers” (Did you know there are 13 of them?) have crafted a “national action plan” and funded countless studies to prevent boo-boos and accidents on the nation’s playgrounds. Apparently, there aren’t enough teachers, parents, local school districts, and county and state regulators to police the slides and seesaws. Why is this the CDC’s business?
“Social norming” in the schools. The CDC has funded studies and campaigns “promoting positive community norms” and “safe, stable, nurturing relationships (SSNRs)” in homes and schools. It’s the mother of all government values clarifications programs. So bad attitudes are now a disease. Again, I ask: Why is this the CDC’s business?
After every public health disaster, CDC bureaucrats play the money card while expanding their regulatory and research reach into anti-gun screeds, anti-smoking propaganda, anti-bullying lessons, gender inequity studies and unlimited behavior modification programs that treat individual vices–personal lifestyle choices–as germs to be eradicated.
As I pointed out years ago, the CDC has its own private funding pipeline in the form of “Friends of CDC,” an Atlanta-based group of deep-pocketed corporations, now including ATT, Costco, General Motors, Google, IBM and Microsoft. To date, the entity has raised some $400 million to support the CDC’s work.
Too bad some of those big bucks can’t be earmarked to find a cure for bureaucratic obesity and a vaccine for mission creep.

ALERT! Scooter Tramp Scotty needs an engine–Some have offered money over the years and seldom have I taken it. This goes double if I’ve helped fix their bike on the side of the road. Also, every year at least one person (often more) shows up at a rally—where I’m working tire operations—with very little money and in need of a tire. I ALWAYS hook them up.
In the case of desperately needed mechanical assistance, if one paid then it would no longer be an act of kindness as it would then be a job. As you all know I’m big on the Karma thing. As for those who simply offer money for no reason, my resistance is simply a matter of pride I guess.
As it is now, the fact is that I’m in a real bind right now and find myself in that awkward position of “needing a helping hand.” Betsy needs another engine and they are no longer cheap or readily available like in the past. It was suggested by more than a few friends that I try this go-fund-me deal. So here it is.
To me this just feels weird and I don’t really expect too much to come of it. But everything definitely helps, especially since this is the off season when I tend to live from savings, and am stuck on the road in Texas with no engine at the moment. One thing is for sure though, in the end Betsy will live again—regardless of what I must do to make that happen.
I will maintain a log of all who contribute and acknowledge them on my FB wall. For those who are able to contribute $50 or more I will get ‘Pin Strip Mike‘ to put their name on my tour pack, fairing, or saddlebags as being sponsors.
If you contribute, thank you very much. If not, I’ll still continue to enjoy your company as we progress on this ride down the road of life.
So many roads, So little time.

UNCLE MONKEY ON FINDING PARTS–One of the most infuriating things for me about building bikes where I do is how isolated and in the middle of nowhere I can feel when it comes to finding parts. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not exactly hundreds of miles from anywhere. The “small town” I live in has a population floating around 30,000 souls. I’m a half hour away from the capital city of the province, so while I don’t have everything within hands reach it shouldn’t be that difficult to find and get parts.
Working on Mrs. Monkey’s HondaMatic I need a handful of simple five-pin relays. Nothing magical or exotic just relays used for starters or headlights. Do you think I could find some? The guys at the parts counters just look at me like I’m asking for a tri-flo capacitor for the gyro-thermal dynamic stabilizer on the international space station. It’s a relay.
I get the same look when I go searching for diodes, deutch pins, drive chains, etc. The local electrical supply store isn’t much more help. I did manage to find one rely for the low, low price of $49.95 for one made in Taiwan, that actually fell apart while it sat on the parts counter.
It is exasperating, while trying to be motivated, researching it out online, finding the list of parts everyone picks up at their local auto parts store, or Home Depot, or Lowes, only to be met with blank stares or such crippling mark-ups. Just one of the parts cost double what others are selling. I’m a handy guy who has built and repaired everything from houses, to cars, trucks, and motorcycles to industrial and farm machinery, so it is not like not to know where to go or what I’m looking for, or calling something by the wrong name.
Maybe it is just the nature of the beast or people just don’t like me. Friends of mine who live elsewhere can pick up a new set of slip-on exhaust that were a take off for free, just to get them off the shelf but the local shop here wants $450 each – and they have road rash from being laid down, $465 each for new.
I will eventually find what I need and hopefully it will be for a reasonable price. Until then I have to go back to the drawing board.

HISTORIC, New Bikernet Reader Comment!—
Remembering Dick Allen
http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=8272
I first saw a Dick Allen springer in a Choppers or Big Bike mag in early 1971. It was on a clean, simple ’60s Pan chop. Flat black cases and chrome pans and hardware, shorty mufflers on drags, plain rail sissybar.
My mind’s eye still regards that bike as one of the cleanest rides I’ve ever seen. It was what spurred me on to chop my own ’60 Pan back then. Other guys who rode then respected his talent and innovation.

THE HUPY REPORT--Increasing Penalties for Right-of-Way Violations without Education Misses the Mark–Right-of-way (ROW) violations against motorcyclists have become an increasing problem over the years. So much so that some states have enacted or are considering legislation to increase the penalties for motorists infringing on a motorcyclist’s right of way and causing serious injury or death.
Many states have inadequate penalties for violating another’s right of way. Most times, it’s a minimal fine. In my home state of Wisconsin, it used to be a $20 fine for the first offense, despite the seriousness of any injuries. I say “used to be” because ABATE of Wisconsin, with the help of then state senator Dave Zien, persuaded the Wisconsin legislature to pass Act 466 into law, effective in October 2006. Among other things, the Act included enhanced penalties for injuring another highway user, including motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Fines range from $200 to $1,000 and a license suspension is included.
An important element of the Act is the education requisite, which includes mandatory classroom instruction specific to motorcycle, bicycle and pedestrian awareness and rights. Hupy and Abraham, S.C. has a long history of working with ABATE of Wisconsin and besides helping with the language of the bill, we testified at a public hearing before the Wisconsin Senate along with ABATE and MRF members.
As recent as October 14, 2014, another state, Michigan, has included a motorcycle and bicycle education element to driver education classes. Known as Nathan’s Law or the Nathan Bower Act, HB 5438 was passed in honor of Nathan Bower who was killed in 2009 in a crash involving a novice driver of an automobile.

Although most agree that something has to be done about inattentive drivers and right-of-way violations against motorcyclists, not everyone is happy with the direction some states have gone.
We agree on the need for action, but some states have enacted legislation, which talks about “vulnerable” highway users and that language has upset some rights activists. They believe that labeling motorcyclists as vulnerable could set the stage for new legislation including a renewed call for helmet mandates, reflective apparel and more.
Another troubling aspect associated with enhanced penalties for ROW violations is the fact that increased fines go to the state. Some rights leaders think that money, or at least a portion of it, should go to the victims of ROW violations to help offset medical and out-of pocket-expenses.
If your state has not considered increasing penalties for ROW violations, contact your local motorcycle rights organization, the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) or the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) for information on what you can do.
Realizing the importance of awareness education, Hupy and Abraham, S.C. assisted ABATE of Wisconsin by fully funding the production of a 14 minute DVD entitled “Share the Road with Motorcycles.”
ABATE has an outstanding Share the Road program which is taught at driver’s education classes and other locations around the state. But those classes only reach a small portion of the driving public.
In order to help spread the awareness message, ABATE decided to explore the idea of making a video for distribution to area schools and other interested organizations. The video is professionally done using a video company suggested by Hupy and Abraham, S.C., and the law firm paid for filming, production and packaging of the product, because the message is so important.
All riders involved in the video are ABATE of Wisconsin members.

Kit Palmer Named Editor Of Cycle News—
IRVINE, CA, October 16, 2014 – The MAG Media Group has announced that Kit Palmer will take over as the editor of Cycle News, effective November 1. Palmer, who has worked at the weekly publication and website for 31 years, will replace long-time editor Paul Carruthers, who will become the Communications Manager for MotoAmerica, the company that will produce the North American Road Racing Series beginning in 2015.
“Kit has been my wingman for what seems like forever as we’ve worked together at Cycle News for close to 30 years,” said Carruthers, who started his career at Cycle News in 1985 and has been its editor since 1993. “I’m excited that he’s getting the opportunity to take Cycle News into the future and I know he’s the right man for the job.”
Palmer is being promoted from off-road editor to editor.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be the editor of Cycle News and continue to build on the success we’ve had here,” Palmer said. “I’m disappointed to see Paul leave after all these years, but I wish him well in his new endeavors. I definitely have some big boots to fill, but look forward to my new challenges as the editor of Cycle News.”
Don Becklin, the President of the MAG Media Group, says Carruthers will be missed, but he’s also confident of Palmer’s ability to carry Cycle News into the future.
“Paul’s departure from Cycle News is obviously a big change for the publication,” Becklin said. “His strong editorial leadership has guided the magazine and made him synonymous with the Cycle News brand for close to three decades. But we recognize the new opportunity for Paul (and all of American road racing) and wish him all the best at MotoAmerica.
“And we are thrilled that Kit Palmer will be stepping into the editor role. His experience and passion is exactly what the organization needs to propel Cycle News into the future. I believe that readers and the motorcycle industry can look forward to seeing Kit’s stamp on the iconic Cycle News brand. In addition, we are also currently beginning a search to find an additional editor to help Kit and associate editor Andrea Wilson.”

She says, confused, ‘Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your wife?

NEVER A DULL MOMENT—Let’s see, if I can list all the content projects coming to Bikernet. Good fuckin’ luck. Okay, it starts with a new tech installing a new D&D Bobcat on Jeremiah’s 2009 Dyna. Jeremiah gets too wound-up, but it’s cool.
I have another BDL lock-up pressure plate to try out on the Mudflap girl FXR and then take her for a ride. I’m working on my final chapter this weekend, the last weekend before the Love Ride.
We should be about ready to show you our first mods to my 2014 Indian Classic. We decided to roll with our 5-Ball racer colors.
I’m also starting on a new artistic endeavor for a charity auction. It’s a bronze sculpture although it won’t come close to the works of the famous Jeff Decker. He’s amazing, but what the hell. I’ve got to start somewhere.
We will bring you coverage of the Crow Customs Analog Run with the Sheriff’s artistic images. To bad I missed it. No cell phones or computers.
I need to wrap up Pat Patterson’s feature (Lead Sled) for the HORSE. Let it be written, let it be done. I spoke to him at the artistry in iron competition by Cycle Source in Vegas. Hopefully he’s home and settled in, so we can have a conversation.
I need to ship my carb out to Kent Weeks, at Lucky Devil’s in Houston. He has most of the elements to kick off our frame build for our Bonneville Streamlined Trike effort. This is going to be an amazing project.
I ordered 400 new 5-Ball Racing Patches. Anytime someone buys a 5-Ball leather they will receive a patch and a new 5-Ball Racing Motel key fob. How’s that for bling?
We are in the process of developing a line of articles on Lucas Oils. We hope to bring you the tech, the chemistry, the functionality, and applications of each lubricant. Does this list scratch the surface? It sorta does, the Mistress has another list, so hang on.
Don’t forget to vote!
Ride Free Forever,
