Pre-Long Beach Show Thursday News for December 16th, 2010

Hey,

You’re going to find the news scary, inspiring, and holiday heartwarming. If it doesn’t meet that criteria, somebody will get their ass kicked. How’s that?

Well, I installed a 42 mm Mikuni on the 5-Ball Factory Racer, and it ran like a champ. I should have stuck with the jetting issues. I re-installed an S&S Super E and now we’re revisiting the jetting. It’s been raining and the street widening outside our building created a growing mud bog. It’s tough for testing, damnit.

We are entering four bikes in the Long Beach IMS Progressive Show this weekend, and setting up a booth. Show management is flying in and staying at the Bikernet headquarters. Dave Perewitz, Ray Wheeler, and the gang are coming for dinner tonight. We’re going to have one helluva weekend.

Here’s one of the bizarre news items of the week: From the Week Magazine, Congress passed the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, forbidding TV advertisers from abruptly raising the volume to startling levels during commercial breaks. Oh, there’s more bullshit, but let’s have a Merry News Day:

POWERSPORT INSTITUTE NAMED S&S FACTORY TRAINING CENTER– PowerSport Institute (PSI) and S&S Cycle Inc. have partnered to create the S&S Factory Training Center — a new program that delivers expanded dealer training at PSI’s 15-acre campus in North Randall, Ohio.

Beginning in January, the S&S Factory Training Center will allow dealer techs to enhance their technical skills with hands-on training on the S&S Variable Fuel Injection (VFI) system, which includes tuning VFI-equipped motorcycles using S&S Pro Tune II software, as well as the Sidewinder training, which covers the mechanical aspects of engines and kits. This program marks the first time S&S has partnered with another company to provide its factory-authorized training.

“Our agreement with S&S broadens our scope in supporting manufacturers in our industry with the high-quality, hands-on training top manufacturers require for their technicians,” Bernie Thompson, PSI campus director, says in a press release. “With a maximum of six techs in each S&S training course, participants receive one-on-one instruction that maximizes their experience in the course. The result is increased efficiency when it comes to rebuilding S&S engines and utilizing the S&S Pro Tune software.”

At the conclusion of the course, techs who receive S&S certification will have their shops promoted as certified dealers on the S&S Cycle website. In addition, those dealers who achieve Pro Tuning Center status will earn special discounts.

Interested S&S dealer techs can visit www.psi-now.com/ss-dealer-training-program to view the class schedule and register to attend.

BIKERNET INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CONTROLLER MEMO OF THE WEEK–  An aide for a cabinet member (Janet Napolitano) once called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas . I pulled up the reservation and noticed he had only a 1-hour layover in Dallas .. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, ”I heard Dallas was a big airport, and we will need a car to drive between gates to save time.” (Aghhhh)

An Illinois Congresswoman (Jan Schakowsky) called last week. She needed to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:30 a.m., and got to Chicago at 8:33 a.m.

I explained that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois , but she couldn’t understand the concept of time zones. Finally, I told her the plane went fast, and she bought that.

MAN CAVE OF THE WEEK–I’m building a mock-up Pan engine to go inside my bar, and I need a couple more parts if you know of any hangin’ out in the scrap heap. I want junk, so nothing usable is taken out of circulation. I need a cam cover, a distributor body or mag case, an intake, and a set of pans. I may just buy new pans because they’re fairly cheap.

Oh, yeah… I need push rod tubes too.

Just started the bar frame. The top will have a 10” overhang, with a padded rail. The top will be black & white tile, and the outside will be black with a foot rail, and have a Plexiglas window in the middle with the Pan engine behind it. There will be hidden mini-spot lights on the motor.

I’m going to move the paint bench (it’s the gray one on the north wall of the MC shop) into the hot rod shop, and put the bar on the north wall, with a 2.5 foot wall clearance and a back-bar with shelves and mirrors. I have a trophy case that’s going on the left side for trophies, plaques, and die cast bikes, and my juke box to the right of the bar where the body tools boxes are now. My big stainless steel tool boxes will replace the cheapo shelves on the east wall next to the yellow bolt bins. It’ll be my man cave.

ICONOCLAST: DENNIS LARKINS RETURNS TO ROCK– Collaboration between photographer and artist to produce new vision of rock legends.

It began with a simple, unusual commission: Dennis Larkins, whose forty-year body of work in fine arts and rock-n-roll graphic design was recently featured in Startling Art: Revealing the Art of Dennis Larkins (Last Gasp/La Luz de Jesus Press), was asked to produce a painting in his unique sculpted dimensional relief style. The subject? Guitar virtuoso Buckethead. Armed with a photograph to work from and the pioneering spirit of his acclaimed creative vision, Dennis set to work. The resulting painting was in a way almost more “real” than the original photograph and was a huge hit with the client.

Word began to spread. Next came a commission from another fan for Dennis to produce a painting based on a photograph of the legendary Stonehenge set he designed and created for Led Zeppelin in 1977. The painting was based on a photograph of the concert by rock photographer Baron Wolman, an old friend of Dennis. After seeing the finished work, Baron engaged Dennis in a conversation about collaboration.

Thus was born the Icons of Rock series. Dennis’s first painting in the series, based on a Wolman photograph of Jimi Hendrix wailing on his Fender Stratocaster, seems to explode off the canvas with all the energy and immediacy of a Hendrix guitar solo at the Filmore in 1968.

“This project is tremendously exciting for me,” says Larkins. “It’s a perfect combination of my own involvement with rock art – recalling the sets and posters I produced for Bill Graham in the 1970s – with my fine art career.”

“Adapting a two-dimensional photograph to my three-dimensional style has been an interesting and fun challenge,” Larkins continues. “In the end, I feel I was able to capture the power of Baron’s original while infusing the painting with a personality and presence of its own.”

What’s next up in the series for Dennis?

“That depends on demand,” replied the artist. “If people are interested, I’d certainly like to take the concept forward. Baron has an amazing catalog of iconic photographs to work with.”

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM NEWS– In November 2010 we traveled to Europe to Rosmalen, Netherlands to attend the Big Twin Dealer Expo. This is a
custom bike show affiliated with the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building held in Sturgis at the rally annually. In 2010 the major sponsors of the World Championship competition included Harley-Davidson Motor Company and ACCEL Motorcycle Products to name a couple of the several companies supporting the event.

The Big Twin show had some very interesting and unique bikes competing. The Euro style is somewhat different, but no less works of art.

In addition to the bike show, this event is as stated above, an Expo. Some of Europe’s largest parts distributors and dealers had exhibits. Companies like Custom Chrome Europe, and Motorcycle Storehouse to name a couple as well as many major retails stores and builders in the Euro Union.

The main sponsor of this show is a company by the name of Zodiac. They are friends of the museum and have been in the business since 1969. President Ton Pels and his son and V.P. Vincent Pels are also very active in the Euro Drag Racing seen and are in fact European Top Fuel Motorcycle Drag Racing Champions.

From the Netherlands, we then headed to the southeastern United States to see how the other half lives…..that being the Hot Rod Enthusiasts that gather for the annual Daytona Turkey Run held at Daytona International Speedway and sponsored by Daytona Beach Street Rods www.turkeyrun.com. Within this enormous hot rod show was a custom bike show and our primary interest for going.

A video with complete coverage of both events is available to view on the members page of our website, www.sturgismuseum.com

In January 2011 we will make our way to the warmth of Southern California where we will visit several of the industries top manufacturers of bikes, parts, and accessories. Among our stops with be a visit to see Sturgis Motorcycle Museum hall of Famer, Mike “Kiwi” Thomas at Kiwi Indian. Video coverage of the trip will be posted on our web-
site.

Bikernet has just made a handshake deal to become a major media sponsor of the Sturgis Museum and their activities for 2011. Hang on for more news.–Bandit

STIMULUS DEFINED–Sometime this year, we taxpayers will again receive another ‘Economic Stimulus’ payment.

This is indeed a very exciting program, and I’ll explain it by using a Q & A format:

Q. What is an ‘Economic Stimulus’ payment ?

A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money ?

A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?

A. Only a smidgen of it.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment ?

A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of China ?

A. Shut up.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:

* If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka .

* If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs.

* If you purchase a computer, it will go to India , Taiwan or China .

* If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico , Honduras and Guatemala ..

* If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea .

* If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan .

* If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep the money in America by:

1) Spending it at yard sales, or

2) Going to ball games, or

3) Spending it on prostitutes, or

4) Beer or

5) Tattoos.

(These are the only American businesses still operating in the U.S. )

Conclusion:

Go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard sale and drink beer all day !

No need to thank me, I’m just glad I could be of help.

S&S SUPER E CARB ADJUSTMENTS–Something is goofy. The main discharge tube should be the same on both carbs. That’s got me wondering. Have these carbs been modified? Make sure the float setting is correct and that the needle and seat seal correctly. If that isn’t right, you won’t be able to jet the carb.

The other thing is that air cleaner. Is it obstructing the bowl vent? Try taking the set screw out of the boss on the bottom of the carb body below the normal bowl vent. See illustration.

You could also try and S&S teardrop AC.

MORE SHOTS OF THE WILD SEAT OF THE WEEK–
I just took some pixs of the saddle seat in the foggy weather. These are pixs of the one and only seat that is finished to date and fitted to the bike. This one was finished over two years ago using soft fashion leather reinforced under the seat with thick raw-hide.
I built the pan/tree and Don Clancy of Clancy’s shop at 450 Maple Ave Cotati, Calif 94931 did all the excellent leather upholstery work. #2 seat is the one just out of the saddle shop, it is still in the fitting stage because we have to modify traditional saddle smithing with motorcycle design. It will make a good pattern for the next seat to be manufactured by a saddle smith once they see it can be done, that will be # 3. then I could branch off into the other makes of Harley other then the EVO Soft-tails ..Alan

VETERANS BENEFITS ACT OF 2010 SIGNED INTO LAW–
New law will enhance, expand and modernize benifits for veterans.

Washington, DC House Veterans Affairs Commmittee Chairman Bob Filner, (D) CA announced that President Obama signed HR 3219 into law. The Veterans Benefits Act of 2010 improves and modernizes certain benefits administered by the Department of
Veterans Affairs (VA) for veterans and their families and survivors. They will receive meaningful, world-class, 21st Century benefits. These improvements will make a big difference in the lives of many of America’s veterans.
Will this apply to you ?? Check with the VA.

Here’s what was mentioned on the White House Web:

Yesterday, President Obama signed the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010 into law. The law includes provisions that help provide support for the caregivers of seriously injured Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, helps improve services for our nation’s 1.8 million women veterans, and helps expand the availability of health care for veterans and services preventing veterans from becoming homeless. These measures and others honor the sacrifices of our men and women who have served this country proudly, the commitment and dedication of the those who care for our wounded service members every day, and our Nation’s sacred responsibility to stand by our troops, our veterans, and their families.

Here’s a quick look at what the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010 does:

* Provides veterans’ caregivers with training, counseling, supportive services, and a living stipend; provides health care to the family caregivers of injured veterans under the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA); requires independent oversight of the caregiver program;
* Requires VA to report to Congress on its comprehensive assessment of the barriers in providing health care to the 1.8 million women veterans’ currently receiving VA health care and it requires VA to train its mental health providers in the treatment of military sexual trauma. It also mandates that VA implement pilot programs to provide child care to women veterans receiving medical care and provide readjustment services to women veterans;
* Expands VA’s authority to provide incentives so that VA can recruit and retain high-quality health care providers; provides travel reimbursements for veterans receiving treatment at VA facilities and grants for veterans service organizations transporting veterans residing in highly rural areas;
* Authorizes the Secretary to utilize non-VA facilities for the care and treatment of veterans suffering from TBI when the Secretary: (1) is unable to provide such treatment or services at the frequency or for the duration necessary; or (2) determines that it is optimal to the veteran’s recovery and rehabilitation;
* Establishes and increases eligibility for Iraq and Afghanistan service members, including National Guard and Reserve members, to receive readjustment counseling; requires VA to conduct a study on veteran suicides;
* Emphasizes VA’s commitment to provide medical care for certain Vietnam-era veterans exposed to herbicide and Gulf-War era veterans who have insufficient medical evidence to establish a service-connected disability; and
* Eliminates copayments for veterans who are catastrophically disabled.

DAYTONA RAFFLES A BRASS BALLS BOBBER– Each year for the last 16 years, the Daytona Beach Community Foundation holds a drawing for the Official Bike Week Motorcycle. Fifty dollars ($50) enters you into the drawing. Since there are only 4500 tickets printed, the odds of being a winner are incredibly high.

Chris Maida, Editor of American Iron Magazine, said, “I selected the 69 Chopper based on an evaluation we did for the magazine at the 2010 Daytona Bike Week. We worked out creating a special high-performance model with a retro S&S Shovelhead-style engine combined with the first 69 Chopper softail.”

The Daytona Beach Community Foundation will receive Brass Balls’ latest model and first softail-version of the 69 Chopper.

“We had planned to release the softail-style 69 Chopper in the second quarter of 2011, but after understanding the importance of the Foundation, we decided to move up the production date to assist in the promotion with the rollout of our new model,” explained Dar Holdsworth, Brass Balls’ BossMan.
You’ll see a full feature of this American Iron/Brass Balls charity effort on the pages of an upcoming American Iron issue.

What about an S&S Gear Drive Camshaft Kit 1999 – 2006 Big Twin (except Dyna 2006)
S&S offers a variety of cam grinds for 1999/Later Big Twin gear drive engines. With the exception of the “bolt in” 510G camshafts, S&S cams are high lift and were designed to take advantage of the extra flow of ported stock heads or S&S Super Stock® cylinder heads. Due to the high lift of these cams, S&S adjustable pushrods and high performance valve springs are recommended.
•510G: Designed as a bolt in cam for 88″, 95″, & 96″ engines with compression ratios below 9.7:1. Intended primarily for stock heads that have not been ported.
•546G: This is a short duration emissions cam with very little overlap to reduce emissions of unburned hydrocarbons. It is intended as a replacement part for S&S emissions certified engines.
•570G: Designed for 88″ to 96″ engines with compression ratios between 9:1 and 10:1.
•585G: Designed for 88″ to 95″ engines with compression ratios from 10 to 10.5:1 and 100″ and 107″ engines at 9.7:1 to 10.5:1 compression.
•625G: Cam set designed for 95″ or larger engines with compression ratios between 10.0 and 10.75:1.
•640G: Designed for engines of 95″ or more with compression ratios between 10.5:1 and 11.5:1 used in S&S 124″ engines.
•675G: Designed for 120″ or larger engines with at least 11:1 compression ratio.
The patented S&S Gear Drive Cams are a must in order to achieve the full potential from high performance Harley Davidson ®Twin Cam 88® engines. Since the chain drive system used in stock Twin Cam 88 engines is not adequate to accurately control valve action at high RPM when using high lift cams and high performance valve springs, a different system was needed. The S&S Gear Drive System was developed to improve performance and to eliminate potential engine damage caused by failure of the chain and tensioner system. S&S Gear Drive Camshaft kits improve valve timing accuracy by eliminating timing chain lash as well as variations caused by the loose fitting stock cam drive sprockets. All stock chain drive components are replaced with S&S Gear Drive Cams and outer drive gears. This simple, effective solution reduces power loss by eliminating chain drag and allows more aggressive cam profiles and increased valve spring force to be used. We put the 625G in our 2006 Deluxe and you have to hang on tight!
This is a great deal! Try $724.00 for the complete kit.

UNCLE MONKEY THE TIME TRAVELER– How we manage our time is an important aspect of our lives. The passage of time is not something we can control. We simply cannot add time to the day. Life is split between work, family and friends and the prerequisite sleep. At work we can get as much done as we can, hitting deadlines, getting in on time, getting the product out the door on schedule. As for sleep we can borrow a little here, borrow a little there, burning the midnight oil to get stuff done. We can do it on the short time, some of us can even keep it up for a while but eventually we need the sleep we have been depriving ourselves. A weekend of partying made up during the week.

The last part is family and friends. It is there that we really see time slip away, get away from us. Juggling time becomes a priority as we try to fit everything in. As bikers we are a social bunch, but we are all trying to get a little ahead. It means weekends are full of runs and rallies. As the dates start to flow in, we map them out on our calendars noting when family obligations come, when work will keep us away. It seems that every group wants to host an event. It’s a good thing but soon events overlap. Sometimes it is as simple as not going, others it is a balance between catching a few hours here, catching few hours there. For others it is choosing to place the events on a rotation attending conflicting events every other year.

Christmas is always a difficult time for me. Christmas parties are mandatory; however it would seem that they all conspire against me frequently booking the same day. I’m now forced into a five-year rotation as I try to juggle family, friends, work and club Christmas parties all on the same night. For some the choice is as simple as club before all others. For some it is family, others it is work as a way to get ahead as promotions and raises depend on attendance.
As the sands of time slip through our hourglass all we can do is hope that there is more sand.

-bad Uncle Monkey

DEAL OF THE WEEK–
Well I sold this thing on eBay and the douche never paid. I gotta move it fast, so I thought Id stick it up here and give you guys a chance. I built it last year and took it to the Vegas auction; the bidding only went to $7g or so, less than my reserve so I brought it home. Most of my restorations make it to museums like Barber, Guy Webster, and the National Motorcycle museum. Not to pat myself on the back but my restorations are pretty fricken awesome. On a good market she would be a strong $10grand. I’ll take 4 if paid quick. You can see more pix on my face book page: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=42801&id=100001244268101

WHEELER RACING COMES TO BIKERNET–
Spent the afternoon Monday at Spike, Billy is contacting Rusty and others, also called Bennett’s about coming to the Long Beach Show.

Spent Mon and Tues all day with my hot rod on the rack, stripped the teeth out of the Primo-Rivera Pro clutch hub. Second time in a mere 80,000 plus miles, not bad.

Borrowed a stock clutch to haul ass home late last night…rode all night arriving 6 this morning. Cold and
wet, planned on leaving Monday during the heat wave. Oh shit!

Rollin out of here tomorrow afternoon headed your direction, one more time. Should arrive early evening, about 7 or 8.

WLA TESTING IN THE SNOW–Check this out, this is that 1942 WLA I built. The photo is of Hook practicing at 25 below zero, in Fairbanks, AK. He and another guy, on a similar style motorcycles, on Feb 21st of this year attempted to ride these bikes from Dawson city, Canada, to Nome, AK. That’s about 2700 mi. Most of the trip was on the surface of the frozen Yukon river, they had two snow machines ahead of them pulling sleds, with gear, also blazing the trail for them, at the same time.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY–abeyance uh-BAY-uhn(t)s, noun:

Suspension; temporary cessation.

He was nineteen years old, and officially a medical student, though inevitably his studies were in abeyance for the duration of the war.
— Ruth Brandon, Surreal Lives: The Surrealists 1917-1945

Her plans fell into abeyance when she parted from Franz Josef and traveled for five years.
— Rebecca West, “Black Lamb and Grey Falcon”, The Atlantic, January 1941

Abeyance derives from Medieval French abeance, “expectation,” from abeer, from a-, “to” (from Latin ad-) + baer, beer, “to gape (at),” from Late Latin batare, “to gape.”

GAS TAX PHILOSOPHY–This makes our 10 cents (3%) increase look small.

Jakarta. All private car owners in Jakarta who fill up on subsidized fuel may see their bill at the pump rise by nearly 50 percent as the government, hard-pressed to ease the burden of subsidies on the budget, is likely to bar access to cheap fuel as of the New Year.

INVOLVED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT?– Don’t get blindsided by an insurance claim.

All the insurance company advertisements tell you that the claims process is supposed to be an easy one. So simple, even a caveman could do it you are thinking. Sounds easy enough right?

After your accident, you immediately go into action. You seek medical treatment and follow your doctor’s advice. You call the police and give your side of the story. If another driver was involved, you collected their name and address. All appears in order.

You make a claim to your insurance company, a company adjuster calls you right back to discuss the estimate for repairing or even replacing your bike and after a quick investigation of the facts, the company cuts you a check to cover the repairs, your loss of income since you missed some work days and for your pain and suffering. A joyful experience right?

More than a few policyholders have been blindsided by an insurance claim that turned out not to be paid because of a policy exclusion or because they did not get the insurance coverage they thought they had bought. Add that some claim experiences are made worse by insurance company delays in processing claims, unsatisfactory offers or settlements, liability disputes and even a denial of a claim altogether. Yes folks, what is supposed to be a simple process, is not always so.

Follow these steps to help get your claim settled as fast and as fair as possible.

1. If involving another driver, get the following information:
Driver’s Name, address, phone number, license plate number, driver’s license number and their insurance card information.

2. Start a file to document everything related to your claim.
Include your own notes about the accident, documents relating to your medical treatment, pictures of damages to your bike and any other documents relating to the property damages. Obtain evidence from your employer regarding your loss of salary if you are claiming loss of earnings as a result of the accident. Make sure you get a copy of the police report for your file as this is a critical document that insurers use to determine liability in the accident. The police report will outline your statements and the statements made by the other driver if one is involved.

3. Make sure to answer the following questions in your written notes.
What caused the accident? What was your position on the roadway when the accident occurred? Were there any witnesses? If so, get their names and contact info. What procedures did you follow after the accident? Also, keep a log of when you contact the insurance company and when you are contacted by claim adjusters, lawyers and anyone else associated with the accident.

4. Read your insurance policy terms and provisions carefully.

For example, not everyone has uninsured motorist coverage. If you are one of the smart ones who purchased this important coverage, you need to understand the maximum limits for personal injury and property damage. If you purchased minimum state limits to save money on your insurance, you may find that a bodily injury limit of $15,000 does not go very far.

Call your insurance agent for advice and direction here. If you do not have a professional insurance agent representing you and helping you through your claim process, perhaps because you bought your insurance policy on your own directly with an insurer, good luck. You either accept the payment offered as “settlement” or find a way to contest the valuation of your claim by providing additional information on the proof of your claim.

5. Depending on the extent of the accident claim, you may need to initiate arbitration or even hire a lawyer.
Serious motorcycle accidents can mean big personal injury problems and even total financial ruin, not to mention death. Some insurance contracts contain arbitration clauses, which means any dispute must be settled by arbitration. If this is the case with your specific policy, you may be able to submit your case to binding arbitration to have an impartial arbitrator decide on your claim’s value. Courts are your other option. Lawyers know how insurance companies operate and how the process of settling a motorcycle claim works. They can also provide you with advice on what compensation is fair in a case like yours. You and your family may need to hire a good lawyer to protect yourself to make sure you are not left holding the bill at the end of a serious claim settlement process.

Too often the view of customers buying insurance is to not worry about claims until they occur. This is a huge mistake.

The insurance claim process, while designed to be as consumer friendly and fair as possible, is not always so. We recommend that you always deal with a professional insurance agent to help you along the way. Good insurance agents know the insurance business inside-out and can take your case to the highest levels of the claims management process. They also make sure you have the insurance coverage that’s right for you and your budget.

At Bikernet Insurance, we help you keep that claim processing experience smooth and moving forward appropriately. Remember, all motorcycle insurance is not the same. Bikernet Insurance is unique in that we have built the business around the needs of the motorcycle community. We are on a mission to educate bikers on how to protect themselves and their machines with good insurance. We provide a quick and easy way to find the best deal for the insurance coverage you need.

FLORIDA Has Big Pushes About DUI and Their Enforcement of The Law–
Lets See What Happens To This Case.

STATE TROOPER CHARGED WITH DUI while on duty in St. Lucie County–Troopers for the Florida Highway Patrol charged one of their own with driving under the influence while she was on duty Tuesday, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lisa A. Orshowitz, 36, failed at the one-legged balance test and other sobriety exercises in the breezeway of the St. Lucie County Courthouse before troopers decided to take her into custody. She posted $350 bail at the St. Lucie County Jail.

Around 10 a.m. Tuesday, Orshowitz was traveling in her patrol car when she struck a curb and flattened a tire, according to the arrest affidavit. She stopped at the courthouse in the 200 block of Northwest Country Club Drive and used a radio to call for help, the affidavit states. A trooper said Orshowitz’s words sounded slurred, which prompted him to go to the courthouse in the 200 block of Northwest Country Club Drive and used a radio to call for help, the affidavit states. A trooper said Orshowitz’s words sounded slurred, which prompted him to go to the courthouse as well.

He and other troopers said Orshowitz was pale faced, had bloodshot eyes and was uneasy on her feet. She told her colleagues she took an extra sleeping pill before she went to bed about 1 a.m. Troopers said she lost her balance on the sobriety tests and had trouble touching her nose.

After a trooper placed her in the back seat of his patrol car, she threatened to have him fired and to sue FHP for false arrest, according to the affidavit.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER ALERT–The Two Most Vital Choices for Health
The number one lifestyle choice you can make to remain healthy is not smoking. Second on the list is regular exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. These commonsense recommendations were the principal findings of a review of 40 scientific studies published between 2006 and 2010. Not surprisingly, the report indicated that regular physical activity not only can reduce the risk of some two dozen diseases including dementia, but also can slow the aging process. If you want additional protection against cancer, increase the half hour of daily exercise to an hour – that could slice another 16 percent off your risk, the investigators said. More specifically, the review found a strong inverse relationship between physical activity and colon cancer in both men and women.

Visualize Before You Eat
Try eating those sugarplums that dance in your head at this time of the year, or anything else your imagination fixes on. If you do, new research suggests that you’re likely to eat less of the food you crave than you might imagine. Investigators at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh recruited 51 individuals to test the effect that fixating on a particular food has on the appetite. They performed five experiments, one of which asked a group of volunteers to imagine putting 30 quarters into a washing machine and eating three M&Ms; another group of participants were asked to imagine putting three quarters into the washing machines and eating 30 M&Ms.

KRYLON JON REPORTS FROM DAVID MANN CHOPPERFEST–Man, or maybe I should say Mann the weather sure was fantastic last weekend for the 2010 edition of the David Mann Chopper Fest.

Okay, so my hook for this week’s report is a little corny, but so what? The point is while the rest of the nation was trapped in their cars half frozen to death waiting to be rescued by some big ol’ smelly St Barnard, it was 88-degrees in Ventura, California, and the girls were shucking their tops like crazy — Not down to exposed nipples, but close enough.

Anyways, it was my second year for helping to judge the bike show. I judged Sportsters, and Big-Twins while Huggy Bear, “Clean” Dean, Kit “I’m not the Devil” Maira, Kim Peterson, along with the rest of the guys that were judges did their thing. As a rule I don’t like to stick around after judging, but I did, and I had a couple of pleasant surprises. In the “show some class” category, the guy that won 3rd place in the Big-Twin class was way cool, and really happy to have won anything at all.

It was a real pleasant break from the usual crap I’ve seen at other shows where you have to deal some clown that thinks his bike should have won 1st. In a nutshell this is how good the vibes are at Chopper Fest, and it’s always a good show. The goofy looking guy that snuck up behind Levi Louie’s Loose Goose while I was trying to take a normal picture is my friend Grant Peterson.

Grant was the associate editor of Classic Trucks while I was at Custom Classic Trucks. These days he runs the tech center for Hot Rod TV / magazine, and then chips in to help Jeff Holt with Street Chopper. The kid is one hell of a fabricator, and built a really nice chopped Shovel that I’d like to shoot for Biker.

Speaking of goofy, the one-lunged Sportster most folks mistook for a Buell Blast is actually a ’72 XLH. I thought the thing was so unique that I gave it 2nd place. For next year’s Chopper Fest, I’d like to see if maybe we could throw together a spectator judged class for magazine editor’s bikes. “Clean” Dean said he’d like to enter his Pan next year, and there’s about another ten past and present bike magazine editors that own some pretty worthy stuff. I’m going to call Huggy Bear at The Shop, and see what he thinks about the idea. Maybe Bandit will bring out the Salt Shaker. That’s it for this week I’ve got to knock out a tech story for Classic Trucks that’s getting awful close to deadline.

EASY RIDER’ bike lost in fire–One of two bikes recognized as the Captain America ride from “Easy Rider” has been destroyed in an Austin, Texas, fire.

Austin Fire Investigators battled fire at a storage facility full of classic cars and bikes Monday afternoon after neighbors reported a grass fire by the facility.

Witnesses told KVUE they heard an explosion coming from the storage building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $100,000 to the structure, and $1 million for contents.

Legendary Motorcycles author Basem Wasef says on his blog says two alleged Captain America bikes are endorsed as authentic by Dan Haggerty (TV’s “Grizzly Adams”) who handled the bike during the film’s production:. One belongs to J&P Cycle’s John Parham and the other, lost in the fire, was owned by Gordon Granger.

MARINE STABBED BY SUSPECTED SHOPLIFTER– AUGUSTA, Ga. – A U.S. Marine reservist collecting toys for children was stabbed when he helped stop a suspected shoplifter in eastern Georgia.

Best Buy sales manager Orvin Smith told The Augusta Chronicle that man was seen on surveillance cameras Friday putting a laptop under his jacket at the Augusta store.

When confronted, the man became irate, knocked down an employee, pulled a knife and ran toward the door. Outside were four Marines collecting toys for the service branch’s “Toys For Tots” program.

Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back. The cut did not appear to be severe.

The suspect was transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken leg, possible broken ribs, assorted lacerations and bruises he obtained when he fell trying to run after stabbing the Marine.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was held until police arrived. The
Richmond County Sheriff’s office said it is investigating.

SACCO MOTORCYCLE SAFETY BILL RECEIVES ASSEMBLY APPROVAL–
Measure Would Set Safety Guidelines for New Motorcycle Riders TRENTON – A bill sponsored by Senator Nicholas J. Sacco which would establish safety guidelines for new motorcycle riders in order to improve rider safety in the Garden State was approved by the Assembly today by a vote of 67-7.

“According to the Federal Highway Authority, about 2,500 motorcycles are involved in traffic accidents each year on New Jersey’s roadways,” said Senator Sacco, D-Hudson and Bergen, and chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. “According to the State Division of Highway Safety, motorcycle accidents account for 70 or more fatalities a year and about 2,000 injuries. We cannot ignore these statistics, and we must make sure that motorcycle riders follow proper precautions to make sure they can navigate New Jersey’s roadways safely.”

The bill, S-736, would enact several motorcycle safety regulations. Under the bill, if a person is issued a motorcycle license for a vehicle with a smaller-size engine – less than 231 cubic centimeters – they would be legally prohibited from operating a motorcycle with an engine displacement of more than 500 cc. Senator Sacco said that this provision would ensure that new motorcycle riders are restricted from operating vehicles with engines that are too powerful for that driver’s skill level.

“The fact remains that a large-engine motorcycle is much harder to control than a small-engine motorcycle,” said Senator Sacco. “The problem that a lot of new motorcycle riders run into is that they assume that because they can operate a Vespa scooter, they can jump on a super-tuned sports bike and it will handle approximately the same. It’s not until after their first accident that they realize that different machines handle very differently.”

The bill would also create a new category of low-speed motorcycles to address the increased use of small motorcycles, and would prohibit low-speed motorcycles from being operated on limited-access interstate highways of public roads with speed limits in excess of 35 miles per hour.

The bill would allow the Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to waive requirements for a motorcycle license or endorsement for holders of an examination permit if that holder completes a recognized motorcycle safety education course. The bill would also require all applicants under the age of 18 to complete a motorcycle safety program as a condition for licensure or endorsement. Finally the bill would clarify the times, roadways and conditions on which holders of an exam permit may practice. The bill would prohibit permit holders from operating a motorcycle in the dark, carrying passengers and operating a motorcycle on the State’s toll roads or limited access highways.

“The ultimate goal through this legislation is to create a safer environment for motorcyclists and other drivers on our roads,” said Senator Sacco. “Motorcyclists who ignore proper safety precautions are a danger to themselves and to others. This bill would make sure that folks follow common sense before they put themselves and the rest of the driving public at risk.”

The bill was approved by the Senate by a vote of 31-3 on August 23, but must be returned to consider Assembly amendments which were largely technical in nature. If approved in the Senate, it would head to the Governor to be signed into law.

Contact Info: Jason Butkowski New Jersey Senate Democratic Office Tel: (609) 292-5215 E-Mail:jbutkowski@njleg.org Web: www.njsendems.com

Hopefully Every Motorcycle Rider in New Jersey will contact their legislator and request he vote Against this bill.
It should also be noted that if the bill is passed that it include wording that there be NO FEE for those taking the classes.
The reason for that request is that there is already money in every motorcycle license and registration for education.
To require people to pay this is the same as charging them twice. A form of double taxation!

If this passes in New Jersey other states are sure to try it.

NEW SIN WU BIKERNET FAMILY ADVICE COLUMN–  A woman comes home and tells her husband, “Remember those Headaches I’ve been having all these years? Well, they’re gone.”

“No more headaches?” the husband asks, ”What happened?”

His wife replies, Margie referred me to a hypnotist. He told me to stand in front of a mirror, stare at myself and repeat “I do not Have a Headache; I do not have a headache, I do not have a headache..”

It Worked! The headaches are all gone.”

The husband replies, “Well, that is wonderful.”

His wife then says, “You know, you haven’t been exactly a ball of Fire in the bedroom these last few years. Why don’t you go see the Hypnotist and see if he can do anything for that?”

The husband agrees to try it

Following his appointment, the husband comes home, rips off his clothes, picks up his wife and carries her into the bedroom.

He puts her on the bed and says, “Don’t move, I’ll be right back.”

He goes into the Bathroom and comes back a few minutes later and jumps into bed and makes passionate love to his wife like never before.

His wife says, “Boy, that was wonderful!”

The husband says, “Don’t move! I will be right back..”

He goes back into the bathroom, comes back and round two was even better than the first time.

The wife sits up and her head is spinning.

Her husband again says, “Don’t move, I’ll be right back.” With that, he goes back in the bathroom.

This time, his wife quietly follows him and there, in the bathroom, she sees him standing at the mirror and saying,

“She’s not my wife.

She’s not my wife.

She’s not my wife…”

His funeral service will be held on Friday.
