Pirelli Unveils The New DIABLO ROSSO IV CORSA
By Wayfarer |
The Sportiest Tire in the Diablo Rosso Family, Available in the Celebratory Edition of Pirelli’s 150-Year Anniversary
• Ideal for riders who want performance upgrades for their motorcycles • Higher grip, enhanced “fast” handling and performance consistency • Bi-compound scheme both on front and rear tire • Slicker tread pattern compared to DIABLO ROSSO IV • Racing-derived technologies applied to profiles and structures ROME, Ga. (February 10, 2021) – Pirelli presents the new DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa, the high-performance hypersport tire that raises the bar of sport riding even higher within the DIABLO ROSSO family. The new DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa represents a fiercer version of the DIABLO ROSSO IV super sport tire, created to satisfy the most demanding motorcyclists seeking a tire capable of high performance, to fully utilize the potential of their bikes. DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa was born in the year in which Pirelli celebrates its 150th anniversary and becomes an integral part of the celebrations. During 2022 a limited edition DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa pays homage to this milestone and features the Pirelli’s 150th anniversary logo on its sidewall. Formed in Milan on January 28, 1872, the company began its business with diversified rubber products, making the first tire for bicycles in 1890. Always passionate about competition, Pirelli participated in the first motorcycle races in 1897 and today continues with the role of sole supplier to the Superbike World Championship, a collaboration that started in 2004, as well as being the most successful brand in MXGP. Today Pirelli is the only tire company focused exclusively on the consumer world, with products and services for cars, motorcycles and bicycles. Who is DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa designed for? DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa is the ideal choice for: • Motorcyclists who love a dynamic riding style on winding roads and mountain passes, who want a tire to match the sporty performance of their motorcycle. • Motorcyclists who are passionate about tuning, who look for performance upgrades and take care of the bike set-up and aesthetics. These riders seek the optimal set-up of their motorcycle according to the type of use, also through the upgrade to high-performance equipment. They also recognize the lightning-shaped tread design, here interrupted, as the iconic symbol representing DIABLO ROSSO sporty performance. The benefits of DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa: The main benefits of DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa are: Higher grip in dry conditions thanks to a slicker tread design that guarantees a larger footprint area alongside the use of innovative compounds that increase mechanical grip levels. Enhanced high-performance handling and precise feedback. The innovative technologies applied to the carcass make DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa able to adhere to the micro-roughness of the asphalt, ensuring precise feedback and a feeling of control. Performance consistency over multiple riding sessions, made possible by the characteristics of the tread pattern, where the intended repetition of the grooves offers high resistance to stress, and, by the new arrangement of the compounds, ensures optimal thermal balance. THE TIRE IN DETAILS Tread Pattern The tread design of DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa features a calculated repetition of the central grooves and a slicker shoulder area, for a void/fill ratio 25%[1] lower than DIABLO ROSSO IV. In the central area, the group of longitudinal grooves assures directional stability and water evacuation. Their orientation follows the wear waves and enables an even wear, while their position increase the structural stability of the tire to give performance consistency over multiple riding sessions. In the intermediate area, linear grooves of different lengths are positioned using a scheme that balances compound flexibility and water evacuation. DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa features a large slick area on the shoulders, able to offer high levels of grip, precision and stability at maximum lean angles. Compounds The front tire is divided into three areas using two different compounds: The central band has a Full Silica compound that occupies around 45% of the section width and is present in the contact area used up to 25 degrees of lean angle. The side areas have a softer compound, also Full Silica, thanks to the use of innovative resins that offer excellent grip and improve the front tire feedback. The rear tire also has a bi-compound scheme for excellent road performance and works in harmony with the front. The central Full Silica compound allows for a quick warm-up and excellent chemical grip on different surface conditions. The shoulder compound is 100% Carbon Black and derives directly from the compounds of DIABLO Supercorsa SC used in racing competitions. This compound is able to offer support at full lean and traction during acceleration managing the torque generated by the latest generation superbikes. Profiles Pirelli exploits all the know-how acquired in the fastest production-derived motorcycle championship. The profiles of DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa are therefore race-derived and are characterized by a multi radius design that improves the tire’s handling. The central area has a sharper profile to facilitate immediate lean and rapid change of direction. In the lateral areas, on the other hand, the profile curvature is less accentuated in order to increase the contact area and ensure maximum traction when cornering. Front and rear tires follow a similar profile design, thus ensuring a perfectly balanced and neutral behavior of the set. Structure With DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa Pirelli uses a racing-derived structure with zero-degree steel belt, which manages to adapt perfectly to different levels of stress without compromising comfort and work optimally with the most advanced electronic control systems. The stiff cord technology features structural cords that are more rigid and at the same time distributed with less density (-20%) compared to a standard sport tire[2]. This scheme leaves more room for the rubber compound, which improves riding feeling and precision thanks to its damping properties, thus transmitting to the rider, a safety feeling and control of the motorcycle. The range The DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa range includes the following sizes. Front • 110/70 ZR 17 M/C 54W TL 07/2022 • 120/70 ZR 17 M/C (58W) TL 01/2022 Rear • 150/60 ZR 17 M/C 66W TL 07/2022 • 180/55 ZR 17 M/C (73W) TL 01/2022 • 180/60 ZR 17 M/C (75W) TL 03/2022 • 190/50 ZR 17 M/C (73W) TL 06/2022 • 190/55 ZR 17 M/C (75W) TL 01/2022 • 200/55 ZR 17 M/C (78W) TL 04/2022 • 200/60 ZR 17 M/C (80W) TL 04/2022 [1] Rear size 190/55 ZR 17 of DIABLO ROSSO IV CORSA and DIABLO ROSSO IV compared [2] Cords distributed with 20% less density compared to DIABLO ROSSO III tireRoyal Enfield Announces 2022 BTR Road Racing Program

New and returning riders, more races and a bigger BUILD. TRAIN. RACE. program for 2022
Milwaukee, WI (Wednesday, February 9, 2022) – The field is set for the 2022 Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race. (BTR) season, and as promised, the new program is the largest yet. The BTR Road Race roster doubles in size from the previous season, with 15 women on the grid, and the Royal Enfield exhibition is set to visit six MotoAmerica venues in 2022. Professional road racer and crew chief Melissa Paris also returns to Royal Enfield BTR as the mentor to the women through each phase of the program.
“The excruciating process of selecting the participants from hundreds of applicants is now over, and we have our BTR Road Race field in place,” said Breeann Poland, Marketing and Communications Lead – Royal Enfield Americas. “We are excited to welcome back four women from previous seasons, plus one making the switch from flat track, along with 10 new faces. Vance & Hines Reveals 2022 Flat Track Racing Team Competing in AFT Production Twins and Singles
Company Supports AFT as Presenting Sponsor of Production Twins Class and Offers over $100,000 in Contingency Sponsorship for Riders
Santa Fe Springs CA – February 9, 2022 – Vance & Hines announced today that the company will field two riders competing in American Flat Track (AFT) racing for the 2022 season. Jessie Janisch will compete in AFT’s Production Twins class aboard a Vance & Hines-built Harley-Davidson XG750R motorcycle and Brandon Kitchen will campaign a Husqvarna FC450 in AFT’s Singles class. Both riders will be supported by a technical team from the company’s Racing Development Center in Brownsburg, Indiana.
Jessie Janisch earned his spot on the Vance & Hines Team in 2021 when he rode six races on the Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson XG750R and ended the season with four trips to the podium and a win in Charlotte, North Carolina. His podium finishes were on two different mile tracks, a TT and his breakthrough win in Charlotte was on a half mile, his first win on a twin-cylinder motorcycle. Janisch is a veteran rider who has raced in both twins and singles classes for the past twelve years with a reputation for success on TT tracks. Originally from West Bend, Wisconsin, Janisch will be running National Number #33 for the 2022 season.
Brandon Kitchen has been considered one of the hot young stars on the AFT Singles circuit since his debut in 2020 when he won the Indy mile on a bike borrowed from Vance & Hines. The 2018 Michigan state champion had two top five finishes in 2021 after he was set back by an injury. He ended the season finishing twelfth in AFT Singles. Kitchen will ride a Husqvarna FC450 in 2022, running National Number #80, with support from Husqvarna Motorcycles USA.
Technical support for the program comes from experienced Vance & Hines employees based at the company’s Racing Development Center.
Craig Koontz, a 12-year Vance & Hines employee who is a long-time motorcycle rider and racer, will be Flat Track Team Manager. Koontz was involved in the company’s Harley-Davidson XR1200 road racing program from its inception.
Steve Polk has a decades-long history of preparing racing motorcycle engines for flat track and motocross, with some of the sport’s top teams using his handiwork on the track. He joined Vance & Hines at the time the company began developing the XG750R for Harley-Davidson. Polk takes the role of Flat Track Crew Chief.
“We’ve got two great riders and our job is to give them motorcycles that can win,” said Koontz. “We’ve got a lot to do before heading to Florida for the start of the season, but we’ve got the team and the resources to make this a successful year for Vance & Hines.”
Vance & Hines expands its involvement in flat track racing as the presenting sponsor of AFT’s Production Twins class and has announced a contingency sponsorship program that makes over $100,000 in prize money available to AFT riders. The company has partnered with Harley-Davidson and is the only organization designated to produce the Harley-Davidson XG750R race-only motorcycle, a turnkey solution for riders wishing to compete in AFT’s Production Twins racing.
The company’s crew at races will extend their efforts beyond supporting Janisch and Kitchen, as tech staff will offer support to other riders using Vance & Hines components on their race bikes.
The 2022 AFT season kicks off in Florida with the Volusia Half Mile on Thursday March 10. AFT has eighteen races slated for this year.

OPEN MIND BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for February 10th, 2022
By Bandit |
Hey,
Yale writes about this later in the news, but this has been a week of keeping your mind open and receptive to new knowledge and resources. Hell, I’ve been faced with a number of challenges with the shop. I’ve never lived anywhere where it gets -9 degrees in the morning.
I’m learning the weather rules, the laws, electrical, generators, heating, insulation, and if I can use the large potbelly stove I’ve carted around for 20 years.
Hell, I’ve learned more about stained glass and researched how to mount it in the front door.
It’s not all non-chopper. I’m learning about ULH flatheads, and working with Departure Bike Works on our other 45 flathead Bonneville effort.

Media Ignores Declining Temperature Anomaly–An analysis of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) year-end global climate report published on Watts Up With That shows NOAA’s report hides more than it reveals. NOAA claims the 2021 global temperature anomaly was the sixth-highest of its recorded measurements.
“The year culminated as the sixth warmest year on record for the globe with a temperature that was 0.84°C (1.51°F) above the 20th century average,” NOAA states. “The years 2013–2021 all rank among the ten warmest years on record.”
Analyst Larry Hamlin points out NOAA downplayed the fact that the 2021 global temperature anomaly measurement marked the sixth year of decline in the temperature anomaly. The decline has persisted despite a measured increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.
The six-year temperature anomaly decline measured by NOAA is confirmed by the temperature anomaly data sets provided by NASA, the UK Met Office, the University of Alabama at Huntsville, and the Remote Sensing System analysis (see the graphs below).
Every major temperature measuring system relied upon by alarmists to proclaim unprecedented warming is in the offing, threatening a climate emergency, has displayed a declining trend in the temperature anomaly over the past six years. This data is in stark contrast with the consistent upward trend projected by the climate models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This declining trend has occurred even as atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations grew from 402 ppm to 417 ppm as measured at the Mauna Loa Observatory.
After examining NOAA’s monthly data closely, Hamlin concludes it “clearly establishes that the monthly and annual global temperature anomaly measurement behaviors are strongly controlled by El Niño and La [Niña] events which are naturally occurring climate phenomena and not driven by man made contributions to atmospheric CO2 levels.”
If Hamlin is correct, natural cycles, not human greenhouse gas emissions, have dominated global temperature trends for the past six years at least. If this is true for the past six years, why not think, as many scientists have suggested, nature has been in control across the whole past 150 years, during which the Earth has experienced alternate periods of warming, cooling, warming, relative stasis, warming, and now cooling again?

ARIZONA INTRODUCES PROPOSAL URGING CONGRESS TO PASS THE RPM ACT–
Arizona’s legislature has introduced a SAN-supported memorial (H.C.M. 2001) urging the U.S. Congress to pass the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act (H.R. 3281 and S. 2736). The RPM Act must be enacted into law to guarantee your right to modify street cars, trucks, and motorcycles into dedicated race vehicles, and safeguards the industry’s right to offer parts that enable racers to compete. It is imperative that lawmakers continue to be reminded of the importance of passing the RPM Act into law this year.
DON’T DELAY! Please ask your state lawmakers to support for H.C.M. 2001:

C.J. ALLEN PASSED–Tonight I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face, because I lost one of my greatest friends… I called him my pops. His name was Hessian Cj Allan. He taught me a whole lot of what I know about being a biker… He was such a legend I don’t even know where to begin to describe him… He was known as the godfather of modern motorcycle engraving.. was a founding member, and I think maybe THE founder, of the Hessians MC… He served as their National President for ages..
He loved kids.. especially his kids… he loved dogs and always had a pack of them… he loved my Cocodog… He loved motorcycles.. He loved women.. He loved his friend Indian Larry… he loved America… and he loved me. He and I went through a lot together through our long friendship, from illness to a bar room brawl.
Once I was at his house for a week, taking care of him after he had a health problem, and he was grumbling.. he grumbled a lot.. and he told me he was stuck in his house with a pack of dogs and an ugly woman…. Well tonight, that ugly woman is ugly crying into her pack of dogs over him.
Godspeed, my darling pops… thank you for all you taught me… tell Pat Leahy I miss him, too.. and I’ll see ya’ll soon as I can. Meanwhile, I will be dreaming of what heaven must sound like tonight. I love you.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY PODCAST OF THE WEEK—
No, Virginia, a Climate Catastrophe Is Not Really 10 Years Away! (Guest: Kenneth Green)
Climate alarmists mistake computer models for reality. Real-world data shows there is no looming climate catastrophe just 10 years off. The alarmists’ insistence that we’re facing a climate apocalypse is nothing more than a ploy for power.
Their predictions, like the computer models they are based upon, are consistently wrong. Scientists now realize that the climate is more variable than previously believed. Responding to climate change isn’t about humanity changing the weather. It’s about adapting to natural climate shifts. Society can adapt to, and capitalize on, the changing climate.

WORDS FROM THE BIKERNET IMPERIAL TEMPLE–I Clear my Mind of All Discord
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
–Steve Jobs
Each morning I begin with a checkup from the neck up and clear MY Mind of the stinkin’ thinkin’!
Wouldn’t it be great if we could wipe out all the stinkin’ thinkin’ in our Minds by hitting a delete button like we do on our computers?
How about, if we had an anti-virus that could block any negativity, fear, doubt or stress from entering our consciousness? And every morning we run that anti-virus to make sure that no stinkin’ thinkin’ programing has snuck in so we can delete it.
My belief is when come on to this earth our Minds are like a brand new computer with massive power and memory ready to be programed. We are virus free, perfect, whole and complete. The programmers in our lives are our parents, race consciousness, family, peers, teachers and friends.
From conception the programing begins. Unfortunately, many of us are not taught Our Truth, that we are Perfect, Whole and Complete, that we have Infinite Potential and that we have a Divine Power Guiding, Guarding and Supplying our Good at the level of our expectations and acceptance.
Many of us are taught that Life is filled with lack, limitation, fear, doubt and negativity. Much of this stinkin’ thinkin’ begins right from the beginning.
It is possible to clear our Minds of the false beliefs, of who we thought we are and what we are capable of. Each morning let’s do a virus check and get rid of any stinkin’ thinkin’. Maybe add statements like, “I can’t do it” with “I am doing It.” Our Lives will not change instantly, but change is possible through meditation. It’s like working out to strengthen your body. What you practice through meditation makes you mind stronger—it’s proven.
Today’s Affirmation: Today I move into a new Consciousness. I begin to get rid of that old programing that limited me from Living My Truth. I have always known that I am much more than I have been led to believe. Today I begin to delete that old programing, I delete stinkin’ thinkin’.
I am going to Live more Life than I ever before, a belief that I am truly and Perfect, Whole and Complete. That my Life is filled with Love, Joy, Peace, Health, Prosperity, Creative self-expression, abundance of Good and so much more. I am going to Let Go of anything and anyone that does not serve my Highest Good.
I am so Grateful to Know My Truth, to Live My Truth, to clear my Mind of the discord of the false beliefs.
And So It Is

THE ROYAL ENFIELD REPORT–Exodus of top executives continues at Royal Enfield; Vimal Sumbly, head of APAC resigns
03-Feb-2022
High-profile exits at Royal Enfield continue, with its Asia-Pacific head, Vimal Sumbly, being the latest to resign from the manufacturer of the Bullet and Classic motorcycles.
Sumbly, who was previously the India head of British motorcycle maker Triumph, had joined Royal Enfield three-four years ago. He was projected to take charge of the national sales operation from company veteran Shaji Koshy, who was set to retire then. Sumbly, however, was made the Asia-Pacific head.
In an internal statement, the company said Sumbly played a significant role in the growth story of the region as he implemented Royal Enfield’s vision for business growth, revenue expansion, customer and influencer relationship, dealer development, and brand building. He also set up a plant in Thailand to assemble motorcycles.
Since Sumbly took charge of the region, the business grew multi-fold with about 10,000 units sales and revenue of over Rs 250 crore from the region last year.
Responding to an email seeking comment on Sumbly’s resignation, a Royal Enfield spokesperson said: “As a policy, we cannot comment on this.”
In the past six months, chief executive Vinod Dasari, head of commercial organisation Lalit Malik, and global head of marketing Shubhranshu Singh have left the company. The other key exits in recent years were of Pankaj Sharma from the domestic sales team and Rodney Copes, a former Harley-Davidson executive who was in charge of North American operations.
The exits follow a flood of title upgrades at the company, with as many as 10 CXOs being created in design, brand, and project management among other functions.
There is a two-tiering of CXOs with design and brand fetching higher merit and reporting directly to managing director Siddhartha Lal, said people in the know. Others including the chiefs of finance, information, and HR report to executive director B Govindarajan.
The exits from the top tier are leading to executives from the mid-tier and other roles also leaving the company, said, company insiders.
Constant changes to top management and roles have also delayed product launches and impacted domestic volumes, which have been struggling to grow beyond 60,000 units in 2021, they said.
The company attributed a fall in sales to a sustained semiconductor shortage. But people in the know said there are also severe demand-related challenges, which were getting masked due to the supply-side issues.
When asked about weak sales of the all-new Classic, the spokesperson said there is healthy booking momentum for the brand and once supplies improve, the company will be able to deliver higher volumes.
Anuj Dua, the brand head for the Classic, Bullet and New Launches, will now take over the responsibility from Sumbly to lead the business in the APAC region.
Royal Enfield has also seen significant churn and restructuring of roles both at the management level and mid and lower management levels.
To be sure, “right-sizing” was a key part of its Project Restore initiative, kickstarted last year, which had aimed at pulling back the company to a 25% operating margin on sales of 50,000 units.
The programme led to the axing of 90-100 people across functions.

THE CLIMATE CALDREN REPORT–Biomass Is Not Green, S&P Says
The S&P Global Clean Energy Index removed British energy giant Drax from its portfolio after it determined the company wasn’t producing carbon-neutral or clean energy.
The Drax group, which produces 5 percent of the electric power used in the United Kingdom, vowed to become the world’s first carbon-negative energy company by 2030. Drax’s promise was to be met through its operation of power plants burning wood pellets to replace coal in generating electricity. Drax has already converted four of six electricity generating units from coal to wood pellets.
Drax is not the first biomass-burning energy company S&P booted from its Global Green Energy Index. It had previously removed French biomass burner Albioma from the list.
Numerous studies show burning biomass is neither green nor clean.
“Biomass generally benefits from confusion over two vastly different terms that often are used interchangeably: ‘renewable’ (or sustainable) and ‘carbon free,’” writes science journalist Michael Fumento in The American Conservative. “Both appeal to the touchy-feely, warm and fuzzy set, but they are not necessarily the same.”
Although biomass can be renewable, burning it is not carbon neutral.
Research shows biomass burning often produces as much or more of traditional regulated air pollutants as coal while wiping out thousands of acres of wildlife habitat. In addition, the claimed carbon dioxide neutrality is vitiated by the emissions from creating the pellets from virgin wood and scrap material, shipping it from overseas, and, most importantly, because even when trees are planted to replace those harvested to burn in power plants (and they aren’t always), any emissions removed happen over decades if not centuries, whereas the emissions from burning the wood pellets are produced immediately.
In the here and now, biomass burning emits “65 percent more carbon dioxide per megawatt hour than modern coal plants and an amazing 285 percent more carbon dioxide than natural gas combined-cycle power plants,” writes Fumento.
A study published in Environmental Research Letters calculated the payback time for forests in the eastern United States, where most of the biomass burned by Drax and others comes from. Under the best-case scenario—when all harvested land is reforested and is allowed to regrow to maturity—burning wood pellets creates a carbon deficit, carrying a payback time of between 44 and 104 years.

THE SOLARI REPORT—
If cars and planes and boats ran on water the move would be to use less water. Because it’s really about restricting movement, not saving the planet.
It’s slow imprisonment. A planet of human corpses is what is really the goal. Government is really a form of masochistic insanity. Run by sadists’ efforts to appeal to the masochists who insist they – the sadists – are necessary for “order.” It’s almost a species-wide curse. But hey everyone says I’m the crazy one.

NEW IN THE NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM–2011 Lady of Liberty Custom by Camel Toe Choppers.
Dale McMahon contacted the National Motorcycle Museum a few years ago to see whether we’d be interested in receiving his custom bike as a donation. The Museum is interested in presenting the creativity of custom builders; on display there are about 20 full customs among over 500 “stock” machines and race bikes.
When we received Dale’s photos, we were introduced to a very unorthodox sort of custom build as you can see in these studio photos. The longer we looked at the photos, the more we said “wow” as we scratched our heads!
For example, a simple 1942 Harley WLA (A for Army) 45 motor is mated to a Revtech 5-Speed transmission through an Evil Engineering open belt primary; the basics meet high-tech, high performance.
Yet the carb is a traditional Linkert with a couple of trick fittings to put it into the wind, and check out the throttle linkage. In fact both the left and right twist grips operate through a rack and pinion setup on the steering head. Throttle, right side. The left twist grip heads down to the clutch release and operates a hydraulic slave cylinder to disengage the clutch! Left footboard is the shifter, right is the rear hydraulic disk brake. There are no traditional coaxial cables as used on millions of motorcycles.
Note the spine frame construction cradling the engine. Low seat height and hand made, but pretty normal, except for the rear suspension. The fabricated tubular swing arm uses a link to a fixed leaf spring mirroring the front suspension. And if you look closely a tiny hydraulic caliper grabs the rear sprocket, the only stopper on the bike. The seat is suspended by a small air bag and beside it the teardrop oil tank incorporates a nicely detailed sight glass.
Fasteners are always important on a custom car or bike. McMahon’s great care brings together the handmade burnished solid copper fasteners and fittings, yet also stainless cap screws. The headlight grill is 3D milled, uses a Lexan lens. The tail light is sculpted and incorporates a bank of LEDs. Then there’s the tour de force stainless exhaust and custom Extreme Machine wheels shod with, front and back, low profile 130/60R23 tires. The fuel cap is very aviation looking in its design with a trick safety latch mechanism, but it’s a vintage race car replica, one of the few sourced components.
Topping off all this great detail is the satin olive drab paint, very understated, until you get to the brilliant nose art on the fuel tank paying respect to those in the American military. Lady of Liberty was featured in HOT BIKE in 2012 just after it was completed.
We called Dale to figure out how he conceived, designed and fabricated some of components. In the end, I asked him about his life’s pursuits and his day job. “I’ve built quite a few custom bikes, but more recently I received a patent for a machine that artificially inseminates honey bees, the queen bees. As in cattle breeding we are working toward more disease and chemical resistant bees. My company is Apis Engineering, apis is greek for bees. American Bee Journal will run a story on my work in coming months.” Wow!
When you visit the National Motorcycle Museum you can take in Dale McMahon’s fine work in Lady Liberty, see other great customs, thousands of pieces of memorabilia and more. We hope to see you soon. Here’s some help in planning a trip, remember we are open every day but the four big holidays, and feel free to call anytime; 319 462 3925, or check out the website: https://nationalmcmuseum.org/plan-a-visit/.

DIRECT FROM THE FOSSIL FUELS RULE HEADQUARTERS–17 surprising facts from Fossil Future
In 14 years of researching the big picture of energy, environment, and climate, I’ve learned many facts that the media never mention—even though few expert researchers dispute them.
–Alex Epstein
One of the key ideas of Fossil Future is that when we are evaluating fossil fuels and alternatives, we need to consider the full context of facts.
I am extremely critical of many leading thinkers and institutions for “catastrophizing” the negative side-effects of fossil fuels, while ignoring fossil fuels’ unique, massive, and desperately-needed benefits to human flourishing.
Here are just some of the “surprising facts” I have learned about fossil fuels, environment, and climate by considering the full context. These are facts that almost no expert researchers will dispute or deny—but yet you never hear about them.
Energy
Fossil fuels are uniquely cost-effective: the only form of energy that can provide every type of energy need (electricity, mobility, industrial heat, residential heat) at low cost, on-demand, for billions of people. (Page 20)
After 100 years of vigorous competition from alternatives, fossil fuels provide 80% of the world’s energy, including over 90% of the world’s transportation energy—and are growing.¹ (Page 196)
Only 1/5th of the world uses what Americans would consider a modest amount of energy. 3 billion people use less electricity than a typical American refrigerator.² (Page 26)
Alternatives to fossil fuels
Nuclear energy is the safest form of energy ever created.³ (Page 60)
Nuclear energy is the cleanest form of energy ever created. (Page 60)
Nuclear energy has become many times more expensive even though the raw material prices haven’t increased and the knowledge of how to produce nuclear energy efficiently has improved.4 (Page 62)
There is no low-cost, scalable way of capturing CO2 in existence or on the horizon.5 (Page 237)
The anti-fossil fuel movement
The anti-fossil fuel “green” movement claims to want to lower CO2 emissions at all costs, yet opposes the two most proven, cost-effective ways of lowering CO2 emissions: nuclear energy and hydroelectric energy. (Page 86)
Contrary to the idea that today’s designated climate experts have been “too conservative” in their predictions about climate change, they have actually been far too catastrophic—predicting a dramatic increase in climate-related death, when in reality climate-related deaths ended up plummeting.6 (Page 42)
Climate-related disaster deaths have decreased 98% over the last century. (Page 42)
Many leading “studies” claiming to prove climate catastrophe totally ignore human beings’ incredible ability to adapt to and master negative climate changes. (Pages 84, 101-102, 247)
The environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuels
Despite claims that the world is “too hot,” cold-related deaths far exceed heat-related deaths.7 (Page 262)
The “greenhouse effect” is a diminishing effect: new CO2 emissions have less of a warming impact than earlier CO2 emissions.8 (Page 325)
The global climate system is near historic lows in CO2 and temperature.? (Pages 334-335)
We have no near-term mechanism of reaching even one fourth the historical high of CO2.¹° (Page 321)
Life on Earth thrived at far higher CO2 levels and temperatures in the past.¹¹ (Page 322)
Planetary warming is concentrated in colder parts of the Earth—it is not truly global.¹² (Page 324)

CLASSIC EASYRIDERS MAGAZINE REVIEW–Since the ground is covered with salt and snow, and it’s not the greatest time to ride, I decided to order the New Classic Easyriders magazine.
I finally got a chance today while rebuilding the snowblower carb to look through issue 555, and it’s a lot like the original magazine in formatting and font.
I truly enjoyed the articles, and the pictures are second to none. Amazing work and I look forward to the next year of mags. I don’t know the amount of hours to create this one, but can tell you it’s worth the price.

Project Triumph TE-1 Prototype Revealed, featuring Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE)-developed advanced battery system
Reveal of the completed Triumph Motorcycles’ TE-1 prototype demonstrator marks the end of the project’s collaboration phase enabling the cutting-edge electric bike to begin live testing
The collaboration, between Triumph Motorcycles, Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE), Integral Powertrain and WMG was set up to create ground-breaking developments in specialist electric motorcycle engineering and innovative integrated technology design
Its all-new, next-generation lightweight battery and e-powertrain system has been developed by WAE and raises the bar for electric bike performance, efficiency and range
Industry-leading technology developed by WAE includes all-new battery management software, integrated vehicle control unit and a compact DC-DC converter
Rider benefits include more power for longer, outstanding performance regardless of battery charge, faster charging and optimized bike handling through enhanced frame position
Project Triumph TE-1 has today been revealed in completed prototype form. The unique collaboration between Triumph Motorcycles, Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE), Integral Powertrain Ltd, and WMG at the University of Warwick funded by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles through Innovate UK, was set up to create ground-breaking developments in specialist electric motorcycle engineering and innovative integrated technology design.
Marking the official end of the collaboration stage of the TE-1 project, the completed demonstrator is now fully ready for the next Triumph-led stage of the project to begin – the live testing program – integrating for the first time all of the latest and final innovations from the project partner workstreams.
The WAE battery pack incorporates dedicated cell packaging for optimum centre of gravity, vehicle control unit, DCDC converter, integrated cooling, charge port, and styled carbon covers. This all-new WAE-developed powertrain will set new standards for electric bike performance, with class-leading power, efficiency, charging time and range.
Wholly responsible for TE-1’s lightweight, ground-breaking battery system, WAE has employed a holistic approach to development which will allow riders to use more electric power for longer, providing access to outstanding performance regardless of battery charge, alongside rapid charging times.
The all-new battery has peak power of 170kW and continuous power of 90kW, with a capacity of 15kWh. This enables the motorbike to deliver 130kW of peak power and 80kW of continuous power. Class leading system cooling combined with the optimum balance of power and energy means TE-1 can give the rider more electric power for longer and deliver outstanding performance regardless of battery charge. The 360-volt system also enables a fast-charging time of under 20mins (0-80%), which is combined with a market leading target range.
Following completion of Phase 2 of the program in March 2021, which delivered a fully bench tested battery, WAE has now concluded work on Phase 3 which contained some critical gateways for the project. In addition to supporting several hardware and software solutions; specifically integrating Triumph’s motorcycle control software to work in harmony with WAE’s controller and battery management system, the team has enhanced the integration of the mechanical and electrical solutions; optimizing battery layout to balance mass and positioning within the chassis.
The demonstrator bike is now undergoing final battery level validation and calibration to ensure the performance results meet best-in-class power and energy density targets and for the rider, ensuring there is no compromise in performance at low levels of charge.

CHIX on 66 Joins Forces with All-Female Motorcycle Support Crew–Riveter Chapter of the AMCA proudly announces that Athena “Vagabond Chickie” Ransom and Vivian “Gypsy” Charros have agreed to join the Chix on 66 ride as our all-female motorcycle support crew.
Chix on 66 is a cross-country ride that follows Route 66 from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, from June 11 through June 25, 2022. Athena and Gypsy will ride the entire Chix on 66 route along with us, providing mechanical support in the event that any participant’s motorcycle needs a repair, whether it’s a fouled spark plug, wiring problem, or anything else that can be fixed on the side of the road.
This service, in conjunction with the sweep support provided by Jason Sims of the Cross Country Chase/Motorcycle Cannonball, will offer riders the security of having backup support for mechanical problems that may arise.
Riveter Chapter President Karan Andrea says, “From the beginning, as we were talking about this ride, we wanted a couple female mechanics to provide support on the road. This goes right along with the intent of this ride, which is to inspire women, not just to ride, but to broaden their vision of what is possible. They can ride a vintage bike, they can learn to service that bike, they can develop mechanical skills. Having Athena and Gypsy provide mechanical support on this ride will inspire all of us, myself included. When women see other women do these things, they begin to believe it is possible for themselves. I am so grateful that Athena and Gypsy are taking time away from their lives and businesses to join us for Chix on 66.”
Athena Ransom, who has been riding and wrenching on motorcycles since her teens, learned her craft from her “guy” at the time, back in 1982, and through her job at a racing legend’s aftermarket shop.
She is the founder/owner/lead tech at Vagabond Chopper in Pompano Beach,
Florida. As part of the Chopper Chick Crew, and the lead crew member of Cris Sommer-Simmons’ Motorcycle Cannonball team in 2010, Athena has used her extensive experience with building, servicing, and maintaining bikes.
She currently hosts the Athena After Dark podcast, featuring various women in the motorcycle industry. Athena states, “I’m so honored to be able to participate in the Chix On 66 Adventure and provide mechanical support to women riders who are ready to take the iconic ride along Route 66. The lessons learned about motorcycles and my past encounters with parts and people proved to be the driving force to a passion-based career in the motorcycle world that I am grateful for daily. It is super exciting to provide support along with my esteemed colleague, the legendary Ms. Gypsy Charros with whom I’ve had the great pleasure of partnering with on incredible motorcycle endeavors. Participants’ preparedness will be key and through multiple platforms we will build confidence and motorcycling memories.”
Vivian “Gypsy” Charros’ mom forbid her to ride the neighborhood boys’ dirt bikes when she was 9 years old. So, she did what any good Catholic girl would do in that situation…she lied. The inevitable crashes and bruising and abrasions happened. Hiding the injuries from mom was a snap. Fixing the bikes on 9-year-old’s salary was challenging and taught her wrenching basics and creative engineering.
Those days prepared her for when she got her 1973 Harley FLH in 1977 that needed a total rebuild before it was road worthy. Since then, she’s had Pans, Shovels, Twin Cams, and a custom Knuckle and got her hands dirty on all of them. She was a freelance writer that evolved into a columnist and staff writer position with Thunder Press magazine that gave her a valid excuse to ride thousands of solo miles. She’s been a Harley-Davidson dealership parts manager, builder, winner of a Discovery Channel Biker-Build-Off trophy, and (her favorite accolade) a member of the Chopper Chick Crew along with Athena “Chickie” Ransom. Gypsy says, “I’m thrilled to be partnered up again with Athena on this exciting, legendary ride. I look forward to traveling Route 66 in its entirety, and welcome the opportunity to not only provide support for the other women riders, but inspire confidence in wrenching on their own rides.”
In the months prior to the start of Chix on 66, all riders and staff will be invited to participate in a series of online seminars addressing topics such as how to prepare one’s motorcycle for a 2,400-mile ride, what tools and gear to bring, what you should know about your bike, and more. These seminars will be announced soon.

RARE YAMAHA TZ500 WITH 0 MILES UP FOR AUCTION
A Yamaha TZ500 with a staggering 0 miles on the clock is currently up for auction online.
Hosted by specialist automotive marketplace Collecting Cars, the production road racer from 1982 has never been ridden and is reported to be completely original down to the original tyres.
Having spent its years in both the UK and Italy as part of private collections, it has been carefully dry stored to preserve its integrity and remains in totally pristine condition.
Descended from the legendary YZR500 made famous by champion GP motorcycle racer Kenny Roberts, the TZ500 is powered by a 500cc two-stroke inline-four, producing around 115hp.
A ‘J series’ example, this model features a number of cosmetic changes compared to its predecessors, as well as reversed outer cylinders.
Edward Lovett, founder of Collecting Cars, said:
“Since launch, our team has sold more than 170 iconic and collectible motorcycles, including setting a new world record for a Japanese bike at auction with a Honda RC213V-S. We anticipate significant global interest in this as-new 1982 Yamaha TZ500, and while it is likely to be acquired by another private collection, it would be fantastic to see it put onto the track to be used as intended.”
To find out more information on this lot, visit Collecting Cars.
Compared to traditional car auctions, Collecting Cars offers significantly better value for sellers and buyers alike. For sellers, the detailed photographic presentation and professional descriptions mean their car is showcased in the best possible way and is marketed to a huge captive audience of passionate enthusiasts. Furthermore, there is no listing fee, and they receive 100% of the hammer price.
For buyers, the premium on auction lots is levied at just 5% + VAT – substantially lower than traditional auction houses, which typically charge 12% or more – and is capped at £6,000. On hammer prices above £100,000 this means that the buyer’s premium is even less than 6%.

Over the past two years, more than 1,360 people have died from drug overdoses in San Francisco. That is more than double the number who have died from Covid in San Francisco.
But you don’t need more stats. You don’t need more numbers about how the tent encampments are exploding. Or about the amount of money that the city is paying for each person doing drugs on the sidewalks. You need to see it.
I’m serious. Everyone in San Francisco should make a trip downtown. Walk around. And do not avert your eyes to the people dying slowly on the streets.
The politicians that run my hometown are relying on you not noticing what’s going on because it’s been bad for so long and who cares if it gets a little worse. Don’t let them. Go see it.
The city is using intimidation. They used it on me when I went to see what was going on at a new addict-services facility, which they’d set up in a public plaza. And they tried to intimidate my friend Michael Shellenberger, as you’ll read below.
The people in charge of homelessness and addiction want to bully people into giving up public streets and parks. They want to take your tax money and let your suffering neighbors die gentle, stoned deaths while they watch and call it justice. They think the mothers who want to get their sons out of the jaws of death are suspect. (It’s conservative to want your kid to live, don’t you know?) The city would like a little privacy please. Fentanyl use is an intimate moment between our officials and our addicts.
Do not listen to the propaganda. Skip Golden Gate Park. Bring your friends downtown instead. Stand in UN Plaza and just watch. Use your eyes, those great weapons.

REPORT FROM WOMEN RIDERS NOW—February brings with it a number of holidays and events. First, it is Black History Month, the dedicated month where we acknowledge the achievements and sacrifices of Black Americans in our communities and country. One of the best resources we have found that celebrates Black women in motorcycling is undoubtedly Black Girls Ride magazine (BGR). BGR has spent more than 10 years covering women in this community and offering rides and events such as the 2022 Black Girls Ride to Essence Fest. We encourage you to check it out and get involved.
One thing I love about dating a fellow rider is that there’s never any shortage of moto gifts I can get him, and vice versa.
For many, February also is the month of love. That’s right, Valentine’s Day is coming up and I’ve been busy thinking up the perfect gift for my Valentine, Joon, pictured here. To help you find the perfect gift for the motorcyclist in your life, we have compiled a Valentine’s Gift Guide of some of our favorite gifts that we have given, received, or would love to receive (hint, hint).
Whether you’re riding or hibernating this season, we hope you’re staying warm and healthy. Make sure to check out our new audio series, Women to Watch, and plan your upcoming riding season with our Events Calendar. Hope to see you on the road soon!
Ride well and do good,

TEAM NEWS–Andrew Hines Takes New Role in Restructured
Vance & Hines/Mission Foods/Suzuki NHRA PSM Team
Vance & Hines today announced details of its 2022 campaign to earn the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship, with a trio of former NHRA champions leading the charge. Andrew Hines will step up to the role of full-time Crew Chief for the team and Angelle Sampey and Eddie Krawiec will each campaign Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycles with Vance & Hines four-valve Suzuki motors.
The company recently announced a strategic partnership with Suzuki which will task Vance & Hines with operating the Suzuki Racing Team for NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racing. Suzuki and Vance & Hines have a long history of NHRA success, with seven NHRA PSM championships under their belts.
Andrew is a six-time NHRA PSM champion with a class leading 56 national event victories and is son of Vance & Hines co-founder Byron Hines. He has raced and worked full time for Vance & Hines since 2000, but spent his childhood at racetracks and in race shops as well.
“Being Crew Chief will be a clear advantage for the team and me,” said Hines. “My experience on the seat for two decades, along with great feedback from our riders, will factor in to how I make tuning decisions for the team. I’m excited to be 100% focused on the bikes, Angelle and Eddie. Winning the championship is our goal and this new approach makes us a stronger team.”
Angelle Sampey is the winningest female in NHRA racing and all of motorsports with 45 wins to her credit. She was NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion three times (2000, 2001 and 2002). Sampey joined Vance & Hines in 2019, and in 2021 Angelle competed on a Vance & Hines Suzuki notching two wins. She also reset Suzuki’s all-time best speed of 202.03mph in Charlotte and finished second-place in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship.
Eddie Krawiec, a four-time champion (2008, 2011, 2012, 2017), has accumulated 49 NHRA PSM wins. He’s been on the Vance & Hines team since 2007 and was the first member of the team to enter the Denso 200 MPH Club. His current top speed is 203.49mph. For 2022, Krawiec swaps his twin-cylinder Buell for a Vance & Hines-powered Suzuki.
“Andrew’s move to Crew Chief is special for Byron and for me,” said Vance & Hines co-founder Terry Vance. “We’ve watched Drew grow up in the sport, become a champion and now take the lead role on the team. He’s got the right combination of skills to excel at this position for us.”
The team will race this season with the existing NHRA-approved, second generation Suzuki Hayabusa bodywork and will work with NHRA to get approval for the all-new, third generation Hayabusa. Once approved by NHRA the new bodywork will be available for all Suzuki-mounted riders to utilize in 2023.
The 2022 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season begins at the GatorNationals in Gainesville, FL March 10-13, 2022. The PSM schedule includes 15 stops in 2022 with the finale at the Auto Club Finals in Pomona, California.

WHEELS THROUGH TIME MUSEUM-–
invites you to a Celebration of Life event on April 2, 2022, in memory of our beloved founder Dale Walksler.
Dale’s legacy became international over the course of his life, and we look forward to a time together sharing and remembering the life of this profound individual.
Sadly, in early 2021 we lost Dale to a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. A celebration of his life will take place at Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC, on April 2, 2022, from 12 pm to 4 pm.
Pastor and museum staff member Kris Estep will speak at 2 pm, followed by comments and stories from some of Dale’s family and closest friends.
A comprehensive exhibit detailing Dale’s passion and vision will also be debuted.
The exhibit chronicles his life, from his youth and earliest days as a Harley-Davidson dealer to building and growing the collection, his prescient move to Maggie Valley, and both his and the museum’s rise to international status. The museum will be open to the public with free admission as part of the event.
We look forward to a day honoring Dale together and sharing the stories of his impact.
Dale Walksler founded Wheels Through Time Museum in 1993 with the purpose of telling the story of the American Motorcycle. A personal passion for collecting rare and historic American motorcycles quickly evolved into a lifelong endeavor. Beginning with a small building behind his Harley-Davidson dealership in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, over the next several decades, he poured boundless energy into transforming Wheels Through Time into one of the premier motorcycle destinations on the planet.
Dale made it a personal mission to make every motorcycle operational, a unique goal and an accomplishment that led to the museum becoming known as “The Museum That Runs.” Through his passion, vision, and dedication coupled with contagious enthusiasm and generosity, he created not just a destination but an experience. His influence and reach extended through public appearances at antique motorcycle events and auctions, guest television appearances, and his own network television shows. Dale’s impact and legacy continues through Wheels Through Time today.
Over the weekend, BLM radicals were caught on video– doubling down on their support of violent extremism, chanting, “Power to the looters! Power to the rioters!”
Their top targets — Small businesses, police and pro-Trump Americans.
On multiple occasions Trump supporters have been assaulted and harassed by BLM and ANTIFA thugs.
This is why we need Bikers for Trump. Our Bikers are mobile and unafraid to face BLM and ANTIFA head on. Most importantly, we have a record of deterring radical Leftists from derailing Trump’s rallies.
The threats will only get louder and more unhinged as we get closer to the election. That’s why we’re asking you to keep our Bikers on the road in order to keep these radical thugs away from Trump’s loyal supporters.

GREEN MURDER QUOTE OF THE DAY—The Global financial crisis and the shutdown of industry did not result in a decrease in carbon dioxide in the air. If the green activists are right, it should have. There was a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by humans during the global COVID-19 epidemic which created production shutdowns and an almost complete cessation of travel yet the rate of rise and concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide did not decrease.
This is validated by the international energy Agency (IEA) which reported a record drop of 8 percent in human emissions of carbon dioxide during the COVID crises.
There was no decrease in global temperature showing that there is no relationship between alleged global warming and human emissions of carbon dioxide.
During WWII when there were massive emissions of carbon dioxide in the war effort, the consequent global carbon dioxide fingerprint change in the air could not be measured. These three planetary experiments, including the financial collapse during 2007-2008, all show that human emissions are much lower than the 3 percent contribution to the annual global emissions claimed by the IPCC.

THIS JUST IN FROM THE MIC–Honors for a Senator Who Champions Motorcycling
Joni Ernst, senator from Iowa, is among the Top 100 Women in Powersports as recently selected by Dealernews.
“In the Senate, I’ve been proud to work across party lines to advance the interests of my fellow motorcyclists – and an industry that helps generate nearly $600 million a year for Iowa’s economy,” Ernst wrote in a thank-you letter to the Dealernews community. “Most recently, I helped lead a bipartisan effort to designate May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness month. By encouraging drivers and bikers to share the road, drive smart, and stay aware, we can stop accidents before they happen so we can keep enjoying the ride.”
Senator Joni Ernst with the MIC’s Scott Schloegel, riding across Iowa.
Ernst is a longtime rider and co-chair of the Senate Motorcycle Caucus along with Senator Gary Peters of Michigan. She has been a speaker in the MIC Symposium series and was joined on “Joni’s Ride Across Iowa” by the MIC’s Scott Schloegel, senior vice president of government relations.
“It is entirely fitting that Senator Ernst is among the 100 women recognized by Dealernews,” Schloegel said. “She is a true champion of our industry, a legit enthusiast, and someone we are fortunate to have inside Congress working representing safety and rider interests.”

Mrs. Donovan was walking down O’Connell Street in Dublin when she met up with Father Flaherty.
The Father said, ‘Top o’ the mornin’ To ye! Aren’t ye Mrs. Donovan? And didn’t I marry ye and yer Hoosband two years ago?’
She replied, ‘Aye, that ye did, Father.’
The Father asked, ‘And be there any wee little ones yet?’
She replied, ‘No, not yet, Father.’
The Father said, ‘Well now, I’m going to Rome next week And I’ll light a fertility candle for ye and yer hoosband.’
She replied, ‘Oh, thank ye, Father…’ they then parted ways…
Some years later they met again. The Father asked, ‘Well now, Mrs. Donovan, how are ye these days?’ She replied, ‘Oh, very well, Father!’ The Father asked, ‘And tell me ,have ye any wee ones yet?’
She replied, ‘Oh yes, Father! Two sets of twins and six singles, ten in all!’
The Father said, ‘That’s wonderful! And how is yer loving hoosband doing?’
She replied, ‘E’s gone to Rome to blow out yer fookin’ candle.’

WHAT’S NEXT?—Don’t forget Valentines Day, goddammit. Or you will be in serious trouble.
It snowed yesterday and into the night, but the 5-Ball racing logo shinned through.
The shop is flying together, but I may take the tank off the ’48 ULH and send it out to paint.
We had the opportunity to buy a lot on Laselle in Sturgis, but my project list is over the top. Unfortunately, I would rather write a book than run a lot during the Rally.
Hang on for the report next week. Stuff is happening fast.

Six Ways to Sunday project reaches its final discipline for racing

The Garage Fridge saves the day
by Kyle Smith from Hagerty.com
The garage fridge is not a tool. It does not actively assist in the completion of a project. If anything, the cooler in the corner often conspires to defeat productivity. For me, recently, it did just the opposite.
Taking the one motorcycle out to compete in cross country, motocross, flat track, road racing, trials, and finally on ice requires a lot of time in the garage.
So much that I was getting burnt out. Luckily this final conversion only required three items: studded tires, over fenders, and a tether kill-switch.
Simple, right? I thought so, too.

Bandit’s First Bike Feature in Easyriders
By Wayfarer |
by Bandit with photos from the late Pete Chiodo
I was working in a bike shop on Imperial Highway, US Choppers in 1970 to support going to Long Beach City College. I was into my first Shovelhead after I sold my 1969 XLCH, and perhaps my fourth bike build after the Sportster, a bent Triump 650 and a 45 trike ground up.
Through Andy Hansen and Bob George I started to rebuild engines. I met Andy on the USS Maddox, DD731, which was my last duty station in the service.
I started to work for Easyriders on the third issue in 1971. That puts me at about 52 years in the motorcycle industry.

Zero to Zen: The Health Benefits of Motorcycling
By Gary Mraz |
My yoga teacher here in Sedona espouses the benefits of vibrations and OOOMMM does have a nice low note. Much scientific research has gone into the study of electro-acoustic vibration. All things vibrate. Motorcycling stimulates blood flow expanding the capillaries creating a tingling feeling. My girlfriend has confirmed the latter.
During this last year of sequestration, I’ve driven my Twin-Processor (P-Twin) customized hi-rez video flat screen desktop computer more than my motorcycle, and I have developed a mild form of carpel tunnel syndrome caused by repetitive mousing side-to-side wrist motion. (Draw cartoon character mousing left to right at a computer (with a helmet on)
Exercising this opposing motion coupled with vibration (that stimulating blood flow expanding the capillaries business) actually reduces carpel tunnel problems, farfetched? This is Rx approved therapy my friends!
Driving the P-Twin desktop also requires endless up and down keyboard/screen forward facing head motions. (Remember the cartoon character)
Constant and extreme left and right head movements of motorcycling again, require the exact opposite movements. Eyeing soccer mom texting in a SUV drifting in from the left while assessing exit strategies between Big Rigs on the right, this contrary motion coupled with vibration help alleviate stiff-neck tension.
What about that achin’ back? Even though the seat of my computers P-Twin desktop has lumbar support and cushy mesh fabrics, still I’m hunched over with my face in a monitor soaking up radiation like hot pockets in a microwave.
Sitting on my motorcycles saddle actually demands a spinal alignment that would make my yoga teacher proud. Coupled with those excellent vibrations, Chakras wide open and chanting Harley Krishna Harley Krishna.
Moto Yoga
So, while you’re out soakin up all these good vibes my yoga teacher has also has given me exercises to do while riding. Since we just sit for hours at a time on our motorcycles why not do something that promotes better health?
Muscle Tension: Shoulders, neck and back get tense sitting on the bike and these exercises can really help loosen you up.
1. Shoulder Release: Bring you shoulders up to your neck and squeeze tightly then just release. Do this a dozen times and its instant neck and shoulder relief.
2. Shoulder Rolls: Roll both shoulders forward in a circular motion several times then reverse the motion several times
3. Lower Back: She has a stretch called round the world that’s perfect while riding. While holding the handlebars make wide circular motions forward and backwards from the waist, then reverse several times.
You can check these out on YouTube video link: https://youtu.be/aludsQh_XZY
Breathing Techniques: Strangely enough I breathe completely different while riding. I hold my breath while accelerating onto the freeway, changing lanes or passing BigRigs. Also, with all the wind in my face I seem to breathe sporadically. Breath Awareness is profoundly simple technique that will increase your overall sense of wellbeing and enjoyment of the present moment.
1. Visualize your heart, this centers your body rhythms.
2. Slow your breath down, taking long deep breathing in and out through your nose.
3. Tune into the sound of the wind in your helmet, hear the air flow, feel your breathing pattern.
4. Breathe in and out with a rhythm your heart, i.e., one breath every four beats.
Breath Awareness has proven health benefits of lowering your stress and improving your focus. It will actually create more consistent intervals between the heart beats and breathe which is said to raise your immune system response and bring you back into a state of peaceful alertness.
Hydrate Yourself. Keep a water bottle holder on your bike within easy reach. Invariably I’ll look down and remember to drink. Stay hydrated.
Snack While Riding: We tend to push ourselves to the destination then attack our food like a hungry wolf. Keep a magnetic tank bag or power bars easily assessable and have one every hour or so. More calories are burnt per hour riding a motorcycle than having sex so with water, food combined with some stretching exercise you really can ride towards better health. I stand up on my floorboards to stretch my legs, you’ll feel better, less tense and more refreshed. As you know this is sketchy like in dangerous, so I stretch and do squats at gas stops.
The Garage Fridge saves the day
By Kyle Smith |
My garage is full at the moment. Really full. I’ve got projects piled on projects, and at the top of my to-do list for January was prepping the XR250R for a frozen flat-track. This proved both the easiest and most difficult conversion of this whole Six Ways to Sunday adventure.
The refrigerator inside my home holds no adult beverages, for two reasons: There are too many tasty leftovers packing the shelves, and I found myself gaining a little belly in the last few years. Therefore, I make access to unhealthy drinks marginally less convenient by storing them in the garage. With each trip out to the garage fridge since I returned from the Barber Vintage Festival in October, I saw the XR on the lift, ready to get a service and in need of parts. It wasn’t cold yet, however, and the thought of ice strong enough to support a motorcycle was comical.
I’ll get to that when the weather turns.
Of all the hard-to-find parts or creative solutions demanded by the XR250R, tires have never been an issue. It runs pretty standard sizes, at least for a vintage machine: a 21-inch front and a 18-inch rear. (Modern off-road machines are typically fitted with 19-inch rear hoops.) I figured it wouldn’t be too hard to find a set of studded tires ready to mount. I didn’t even need the nicest tires, just ones that would get me out on track. Surely a used set would be available for reasonable money.
Nope.
I thought I struck gold when I ventured to an ice racing event to spectate and found an 18-inch rear tire. Bought the set on the spot for cash. Only when I got home and attempted to mount them did I discover just how dumb I was. The pair I had bought in such haste were an 18-inch rear and 19-inch front—like an odd flat-track setup. I put the tools down and walked to the fridge, grabbing a koozie from the catch-all shelf on the way.
Then it hit me like a bright yellow 1933 Ford pickup. Just call Jeff.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that prepping a set of ice-worthy motorcycle tires involves nothing more than a drill and a bag of screws. Problem is, a lot of physics is involved. The slight angles placed on the screws have a critical impact on how the bike handles and puts down power. We aren’t talking sheetmetal screws, either. There are specially made screws for ice racing, including ones specific to the event I plan to run. Since the race I’m attending is an AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) sanctioned event, the screws can have heads no taller than a quarter-inch. I could go about studding my own tires, but it really didn’t make sense if I wanted to get on the ice this year. So I picked up the phone to one of the best ice-tire guys in the U.S.: Jeff Fredette.
The tether kill switch is borrowed from a snowmobile and shuts the engine down should I become unceremoniously disconnected from the bike mid-race. It’s a two-wire install that replaces the push-button kill switch already on the handlebars.
