THE 2004 BIG TEXAS CHOP-OFF–The 2004 Big Texas Chop-Off is a unique competition focused on discovering and showcasing the new and talented faces behind some of the best looking bikes and best kept secrets around the country. You will be competing amongst 17 other hand picked builders who will be competing in this year’s event. You will be unveiling your work-of-art at this year?s Lone Star Biker Bash on September 16, 17, 18 & 19th vying for a large cash prize as well as lots of media attention. This event is really about showcasing you and the bike you build.

The only people truly qualified to judge an event like this are other Master Builders that know what to look for and that are respected in the industry. The current panel of judges for 2004 are Donnie Smith, Dave Perewitz, Tim Edmondson, Roger Bourget, Jerry Covington, Jim Nasi, Joe Martin and Rick Fairless. Three more judges will be added to the panel.

Additionally, we’re putting together an autograph book featuring each of the builders and judges that will include a photo & brief bio on each of the contestants. Couple this with substantial media exposure and we?re convinced the 2004 Big Texas Chop-Off will soon be considered the most prestigious bike building invitational in the country.

Remember, the bike you build must be kept away from the public eye until the unveiling at the Lone Star Biker Bash. This is very important in keeping the media attention at a high level. This is also one of the things that make this event different. No one can enter a bike they have already shown.

The 18 competitors for 2004 are (in no particular order) Jesse Jurrens & Mike Prugh (Independent Cycles), Jesse & James Rooke (Rooke Customs), David Covington (Covington Cycle City), Tony “Torch” & Mike “Ziggy” (G Spot Choppers/Beaberbuilt), Brice Judy (Outlaw Customs), Bill Rucker (Rucker Performance), Ray Salas (Salas Ultra Custom Bike Works), Gypsy (Thunder Press & Independent builder), Matt Edmondson (Edmondson Custom Cycles), Ken Kirkpatrick & Kevin Brown (Sattler V-Twin), Jason Crump (Texas V-Twin), Kent Weeks (Lucky Devil), Mike Ballew (Ballew’s South Central Customs), Mike Cheek “Grumpy” (Grumpy’s Customs), Mike Stafford (MGS Custom Bikes), Erick Ackley (Tempest Cycles), Alex Mardikian (Von Dutch Kustom Cycles), and Wild Bill (Pro Street Customs).

These builders are competing for cash prizes up to $50, 000.

LAUGHLIN TOUCH–Sounds like your trip was a lot like ours, including the ticket! Saw those 2 babes in the SGV booth and followed them for a while. Channel 8 Las Vegas was doing a “Blues, Bikes & Babes” special at the American Ironhorse booth. Caught these 2 on one of the bikes and in front of the channel 8 cameras…thought you might enjoy these.

F-USA THUNDERBIKE TITLE-CHASE TIGHTENS AT SUMMIT POINT–Estok Disqualified but Retains Slim Lead in Series Points.

SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. (May 31, 2004) – The top contenders for the Formula USA National Thunderbike championship faltered at the third event of the eight-race series at Summit Point Raceway yielding a new winner and tightening the points chase. Harding Harley-Davidson rider Dave Estok was disqualified during the post-event technical inspection, but still left the event leading the series by a single point, as just seven points separate the top four riders.

Summit Point regular Dave Yaakov took the pole as Estok, the defending Thunderbike national champion, qualified a disappointing 13th aboard his Buell Firebolt. Estok said it was the worst qualifying result of his career, adding that last-minute tuning changes aimed at reducing his horsepower to suit the class power-to-weight rules made his bike run poorly.

Yaakov and Harding Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Bemisderfer led from the start, but Bemisderfer was forced to retire when his Buell Firebolt developed an oil line problem. Yaakov then cruised to victory aboard his CAD Cycles Suzuki. Hal?s Buell rider Dan Bilansky crossed the finish line second, but was demoted three positions after his Buell Firebolt exceeded its allowed power/weight ratio limit by less than 1 horsepower in post-race testing. Hoban Brothers Racing-Appleton Buell rider Jeff Johnson was thus promoted from third to second position in the final standings, with CAD Racing rider Darren Danilowicz moving up to third. Estok crossed the line fifth but was disqualified entirely after his Buell Firebolt tested 2.5 horsepower over its allowed power/weight limit. Bilansky was credited with fifth place, with Blue Springs Buell rider Walt Sipp sixth aboard his Buell Lightning X1.

When the results were finally sorted out, Estok left Summit Point with 41 points after three Thunderbike events, just one point ahead of Bemisderfer. Bilansky is third with 36 points, followed by Kosco Buell rider Joe Rozynski with 34 points. The next stop on the Formula USA National Thunderbike Series is June 18-20 at New Hampshire International Raceway in Loudon, N.H.

The Formula USA Thunderbike series is a horsepower-to-weight ratio restricted class, open to a variety of production-based motorcycles. Buell-mounted riders competing in the eight-event 2004 Thunderbike series are racing for a share of the $70,500 contingency fund posted by Buell Motorcycle Company and Buell Riders Adventure Group (BRAG).

ART OF HARLEYS– The 8th Art of Harleys event was a great success again this year.

We all have known that Harley?s have been an Art Form ever since the first one was modified to fit its owner?s preference. Through the years they have gone through many changes. More and more people are starting to realize that also.

One organization is the Brevard Cultural Alliance of Florida. Some time ago they realized that some of the Custom Motorcycles in fact had the same things done to them as other art forms they were promoting. Completed motorcycles were an art form that included design and engineering. The use of metal work, sculpture, painting, and all the other things that go into creating a custom are in fact art.

The event this year was held at Wickham Park in Melbourne Florida and will benefit youth at risk programs in the area. It is a family event with some thing for all ages. Besides the Bike Show there was food, music, vendors, raffles, games and other forms of art displayed.

Lynne Brezina who works for the Alliance contacted me to help out on the Bike Show some months ago. We modified the classes and forms were made for the judges to give an even vote to all in each category. The Judges were all Bikers from the area.

The voting was close. I had to really look at a few to decide a point or two differences. I did also get to see some people that I had not for awhile and spend time with or talk to them which I always enjoy.

I hope all of you had as good a time as I did this Memorial Day weekend.

12 OUTLAWS CONVICTED–Outlaws trial ends with 12 convicted; most found guilty of racketeering.

After a two-month trial filled with testimony about murders and drug dealing, a federal jury found 10 members of the Outlaws motorcycle club – including its former international president – guilty of racketeering yesterday in U.S. District Court in Toledo.

The jury, which deliberated for about four days, also found 12 of the 14 defendants guilty of conspiracy to participate in racketeering through their involvement in the infamous motorcycle club.

DON’T MESS WITH PIZZA MAN– A pizza deliveryman won’t face charges for fatally shooting a would-be robber several times when he was approached in a high-crime area, but his employer, Pizza Hut, has fired him for violating a company policy against carrying firearms.

Ronald B. Honeycutt, 38, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, says he’s been delivering pizzas for 20 years and has always packed heat on the job.

According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, prosecutors announced Friday the Carmel, Ind., man will not face criminal charges.

“It’s a clear case of self-defense,” Deputy Prosecutor Barb Crawford said. “He did what the law allows him to do to protect himself.”

Jerome Brown-Dancler approached Honeycutt at around 11 p.m. on May 17 just after he had made a pizza delivery in Indianapolis. According to the report, Brown-Dancler pointed a 9 mm handgun at the Pizza Hut employee as he was entering his van.

Brown-Dancler’s gun carried a loaded 14-round clip but had no bullet in the chamber, Crawford told the Star. When confronted, Honeycutt pulled his own 9 mm from the back of his pants and fired until it was empty. He says he fired 15 times in about eight seconds. An autopsy revealed Brown-Dancler was hit at least 10 times.

PRISON POPULATION GROWING–America?s inmate population grew by 2.9 percent last year, to almost 2.1 million people, with one of every 75 men living in prison or jail.

The inmate population continued its rise despite a fall in the crime rate and many states efforts to reduce some sentences, especially for low level drug offenders.

The report issued by the Justice Department?s Bureau of Justice Statistics attributes much of the increase to get tough policies enacted during the 1980s and 90s, such as mandatory drug sentences, ?three-strikes-and-you?re out? laws, and ?truth-in-sentencing? laws that restrict early releases.

I have said for a long time that there is Big Money being made by the Penal System and Those Involved In It.

TAKE A BREAK–Here’s the front end for Bandit’s Ultimate Chopper Project. It’s a tapered leg Paughco Springer that 9 inches over stock. This springer has hollow legs and a more classic design. It’s lighter and came black powdercoated. Paughco recommendes that you spray the powder coated unit with a Pledge like product to protect the finish. I’ve been preaching to use Pledge for years. It has no abrasives, creeps into hard to reach areas and is slick as snot. Very protective for paint and chrome.

I’ve got to hit the showers and roll into West Hollywood for the 2005 Victory Motorcycle Launch. Next week H-D is introducing their new model line-up. I’ll pray for open carpool lanes during rush hour traffic and an open bar once I get there.

Damn, another weekend is almost upon us. It’s almost party time, again. I need to hammer at the Keyboard. We have writing assignments hanging over us. Hang on Bikernet will pop with new material over the next couple of days.

OCC BUILDS POW BIKE–I finally broke down and watched a complete OCC, American Chopper segment on building the POW/MIA bike. You know the old adage, “Can’t talk shit about something you know nothing about.”

I gleaned from the episode that this was one of the first bikes he built without his son involved. Sure, if was a novelity bike, but he has some talented fabricators and a hard working team on his staff. Sr. ultimately rode the bike and they carted it to a photo shoot for the cover of Hot Rod Bikes. Although the bike was over-the-top for my tastes, there was hard creative work behind the build. Gotta give ’em some credit.

Regarding the trips to the skeet range and hunting pheasants, that sucks. What the fuck does it have to do with bikes?

THE STEALTH REPORT– Last week I had a big change of plans take place. I should say a huge change in plans. I had planned on riding to Virginia and then on Sunday heading out to the annual Rolling Thunder Run To The Wall. All that changed Friday!

You see for the past few months I have been in a relationship crisis. I have struggled daily with this and Friday I came to a crossroads in my life. I could choose to close the books on my relationship with “THE MEANEST” and spend the rest of my life being miserable and wondering what might have been, or I could confess to being a jerk and ask for forgiveness and hope for the best. This has been one of the toughest times for me in my life and I have learned some hard lessons. It seems I am famous for learning hard lessons and this time was no different. So I made up my mind when I got to work Friday morning that I would ask her for forgiveness. Yeah, we work together and this was not easy. She understands the part in me that makes me a biker, she understands when I need some garage time, she understands when I need to buy something for our bikes. Yeah, I said “OUR” bikes. She has supported bike projects that I built in the past, with encouragement and also financially without hesitation. I knew that I would never find another “MEANEST” anywhere!

run for breath

I realized after a lot of looking inside, and soul searching, all of us need to do this from time to time, that “THE MEANEST” was my soul mate, my best friend. I missed her touch on my back when I rode down the highway. I missed her advice. She is a big reason the Run For Breath is the success that it is. Now that she is back on board the 6th Annual Run For Breath “In Memory of Justin Pullin” July 25th is back in balance. You see she is the one behind the scenes who makes it all happen. More than the run though she was and is again a big part of my life. No, she isn’t making me write any of this, it is all me. It’s AMAZING with the blink of an eye, you finally see the light! That is from me to you, Meanest, along with a little help from AEROSMITH!

Not only did she forgive me, she said YES to the big question. This time we are getting MARRIED!The big day is June 27th and it is going to be a biker style wedding. That is the day after THE HORSE SMOKE-OUT here in the Charlotte area, so if you are still around, you all are invited. The ceremony will take place at Lowes Motor Speedway. It is about 15-20 minutes from SMOKE-OUT fairgrounds.

I hope you all are not disappointed that I don’t have any Run To The Wall coverage for you this week. Sometimes a man has to stand up and do what he needs to do and this was one of those times. Sometimes you have to be big enough to swallow your pride and admit that you were wrong. That is what I did. I realized that in life you don’t have a lot of best friends to lose and there are not too many soul mates for you, so I could not take a chance of losing mine.

I know this is different from what I usually write about, and I PROMISE to be back to my old form next week. I just had to say what I needed to say! Thanks for listening!

Enough, it is time for “THE MEANEST” and I to blast down the road to a Run for Breath Meeting! That touch on my back is back! Life is good again!

Later!

George Fleming’s new Bikernet Logo.

PROOF THAT THE WORLD IS NUTS ! !– In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death. (Like THAT makes sense.)

In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman’s genitals, but is prohibited from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror. (Do they look different reversed?)

Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers; the sex organs of the deceased must becovered with a brick or piece of wood at all times. (A brick??)

The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation. (Much worse than “going blind!”)

There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the countryside and deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the first time… Reason: under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to marry. (Let’s just think for a minute; is there any job anywhere else in the world that even comes close to this?)

In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but may only do so with her bare hands. The husband’s lover, on the other hand, may be killed in any manner desired. (Ah!)

Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England – but only in tropical fish stores. (But of course!)

In Cali, Colombia, a woman may only have sex with her husband, and the first time this happens, her mother must be in the room to witness the act. (Makes one shudder at the thought.)

In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, it is illegal for a man to have sex with a woman and her daughter at the same time. (I presume this was a big enough problem that they had to pass this law?)

In Maryland, it is illegal to sell condoms from vending machines with one exception: prophylactics may be dispensed from a vending machine only “in places where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises.” (Is this a great country or what?) (Not as great as Guam!)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Who volunteers for this stuff?)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (Is that why Flipper was always smiling?)

The ant can lift 50 times its own weight, can pull 30 times its own weight and always falls over on its right side when intoxicated. (From drinking little bottles of…? — did the govt. pay for this research??)

And, the best for last….. Turtles can breathe through their butts. (Do you think they have bad breath?)

Bros Club

THE BROS CLUB INSURANCE REPORT– Here’s a tidbit for you on the cycle insurance side of things.BROS Club will be launching its new website in 3 weeks. We’ve lowered our TWO YEAR membership fee to $68.00. In September our new ad will hit the stands, it’s a new look, see attached .pdf file.

We also now offer insurance to bikers online and instant quotes are available in 47 States 24/7 – you can even bind coverage instantly with a credit card. Although not available with the online quoting, we also offer “full value” coverage for many main stream US-V-Twin bikes with values up to $35,000. “Full Value” removes the “depreciation” clause and helps to prevent the insurance carrier from screwing our members when they’re adjusting the loss. It won’t fit the super custom bikes but it’s a pretty good fit for Harleys with lots of bolt on stuff and paint. It’s also good for the Big Dogs and some of the other well known (and still in business) motorcycle brands.

The link for instant quotes through BROS Club is http://www.insurebrosclub.com/atv.asp?atv=1

BROS Club has enjoyed a 14 year relationship with our insurance carrier and our members are happy with the stability we have helped to bring to riders throughout the Country.

We are still the ONLY biker road service organization to perform a formal quality control survey on EACH AND EVERY DISPATCHED CALL. We know what’s happening out there when our members need help, and if there’s a problem in our system, we learn about it early and fix it so it doesn’t adversely impact our other members. We’re not a volunteer program so when help is needed we’ll be dispatching fully qualified, paid, motorcycle towing rigs.

BROS Club continues to be the most comprehensive stand-alone motorcycle emergency road service plan anywhere.

All my best to y’all

ROLLING THUNDER REPORT–Just got home from Washington DC after riding in the Rolling Thunder Parade on Sunday and this is what I found in my email. Kind of makes me wonder what the sacrifice of all those lives really means to this administration. As my dad always said, “talk is cheap, it’s what you do that matters, not what you say you’ll do.”

Dad rode his Indian in the ’30s until he shipped out for England to as he put it, “to kill Germans.” I wish he could have lived to see the dedication of the WWII Memorial. If he had been alive today I’ll bet he would have asked me to put him on the back of my Road Glide and take him along with me so he could ride in Rolling Thunder too.

The town was full of Vietnam Vets and WWII vets which made this year’s parade even more poignant. To share the city with those men from both World War II and Vietnam was an honor and a memory that will be with me as long as I live.

BUSH THANKS VETERANS THEN CUTS THEIR HEALTH CARE–President Bush spent the Memorial Day weekend thanking the nation’s veterans for their service, saying “we acknowledge the debt [we owe them] by showing our respect and gratitude.” Yet, his rhetoric came just hours after the Bush Administration announced new plans to slash veterans health care funding if it returns to power in 2005.

Late last week, the Administration released a memo detailing a plan to cut $1 billion from the Veterans Administration in the first budget of its second term. The cut would come even after the White House has tried to close veterans hospitals throughout the country, and has proposed veterans health care budgets that have been criticized by veterans groups and the President’s own Veterans Affairs secretary. It also comes after the president decided to cut off 164,000 veterans from their existing prescription drug coverage, and threatened to veto any bill that would allow veterans to receive both the military pension they were promised, and any disability compensation to which they are entitled.

HOLD ON, GODDAMNIT–Here’s some facts for people who care about veterans benefits:

Annenberg Public Policy Center: Kerry?s Claims About Veterans Health Cuts Are Not True. The University of Pennsylvania?s Annenberg Center stated in a FactCheck, “Funding for veterans is going up twice as fast under Bush as it did under Clinton. And the number of veterans getting health benefits is going up 25% under Bush?s budgets. That?s hardly a cut. ? FactCheck.org twice contacted the Kerry campaign asking how he justified his claim that the VA budget is being cut, but we?ve received no response.” (FactCheck.org Website, www.factcheck.org/article.aspx?docid=144 , Accessed 2/18/04)

Increased VA Funding. The President?s FY 2005 budget proposes to increase funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs to $68 billion from the 2001 level of $48 billion. The President?s budget requests $29.5 billion for VA?s medical care for next year, more that 40 percent above the 2001 level. The past four straight VA budget increases have provided more than a 40 percent increase in VA health care alone since 2001– enabling a million more patients to receive treatment.

BIKERNET NEWS FLASH–FLOW BENCH CONNECTION, OLD H-D TUNER, TEMPEST CYCLES AND BAD JOKES

bikernet address

Hey, I’m in a funk, maybe, can’t decide. I have a cracked molar that’s driving me nuts and takes the wind outta my sails. Last night after the Doctor informed me of my malady (less than a year ago I spent a grand on this tooth). I felt a burst of energy and hammered together a number sign for the front gate.

BDL

I got so wound up in the brass number frame that I spaced on a radio interview. I’m sure they’ll kick my ass for that. I need to wrap up the Run For Breath Trophy this weekend and next week we’ll install the newest BDL guarded belt system on Roger’s Softail. Along with the latest Compu-Fire starter. You need to enter our door prize contest on a regular basis. We’re giving away good shit.

Let’s hit the news. Tomorrow I will see the Los Angeles City government about sorting out 78 years of building permits:

RICH KING THREE-PEATS AT SPRINGFIELD MILE–Factory Tuner Bill Werner Notches 150th Career Victory.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (May 31, 2004) – Screamin? Eagle Performance Parts rider Rich King executed a perfect last-lap pass of Bartels? Harley-Davidson rider Jay Springsteen to win his third consecutive AMA Grand National race at the Springfield Mile. The race, held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, was run on Monday due to poor weather conditions on Sunday.

In 2003, King rode his factory-sponsored Harley-Davidson XR750 to a pair of victories at this legendary dirt track, where average lap speeds exceed 100 mph. His victory this weekend was the first of the season for King and the 18th Grand National victory of his 20-year pro career. It also happened to come on his 41st birthday.

?It was great to win at Springfield again,? said King. ?I couldn?t have wished for a better birthday present, and I?m really happy for the team, especially Bill Werner.?

King?s dramatic win served as a milestone for senior technician Bill Werner, who notched his 150th career victory as a Harley-Davidson factory tuner and formally announced his retirement. Werner, a member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, started working in the Harley-Davidson race shop in 1966 and leaves a legacy of 13 AMA Grand National Championships. King, along with former factory riders, Springsteen, Scott Parker and Jennifer Snyder escorted Werner on a lap of honor as part of the Springfield Mile opening ceremony.

?What a great weekend for Harley-Davidson racing,? said Screamin? Eagle Racing Manager Anne Paluso. ?Springfield is a special place, and we were able to celebrate Bill?s achievements with that lap of honor, but it was especially fitting that the best dirt track tuner the sport will ever see earned his 150th win later that day.?

In the 25-lap final, King battled Quality Checked Pre-Owned Ford/Lancaster Harley-Davidson rider Chris Carr, Coziahr Harley-Davidson/National Cycle rider Johnny Murphree and SuperTrapp/Moroney Cycle rider Mike Hacker as eight different riders each led a lap. King first took the lead on lap 10, and later led laps 17 through 21. Hacker led laps 22-23 but slipped out of the groove and dropped all the way back to 11th place, handing the lead to Springsteen with King in fourth place. King passed Carr and Murphree on the last lap, and then set up Springsteen for a drafting pass coming out of the last turn, just nipping the popular veteran at the line in a classic Springfield finish. Murphree and Carr followed in third and fourth places. All riders in the Springfield final were aboard Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycles. Carr retained his lead in the 2004 Progressive Insurance Flat Track Championship season points chase.

In other action at Springfield, King qualified for the Springfield TT on Saturday, May 29 aboard his Screamin? Eagle Racing Harley-Davidson XR550, but retired after three laps of the tight and twisting course with a mechanical problem.

BIKERNET FARMING ADVISORY–A chicken farmer went into a local tavern and took a seat at the bar next to a woman patron and orders a glass of champagne.

The woman perks up and says “How about that? I just ordered a glass of champagne, too!”

He turned to her and said, “What a coincidence.”Continuing, he said “This is a special day for me, I’m celebrating.”

“This is a special day for me, too, and I’m also celebrating!” says the woman.

“What a coincidence.” says the man. They clinked glasses and he asked, “What are you celebrating?””My husband and I have been trying to have a child.Today, my gynecologist told me I’m pregnant!

“What a coincidence.” says the man. “I’m a chicken farmer. For years all my hens were infertile, but today they’re finally fertile.”

“That’s great!” says the woman, “How did your chickens become fertile?”

“I switched cocks,” he replied.

“What a coincidence,” she said.

BIKERNET SHOP OF THE WEEK–Here’s a chop that deserves checking out. Sharp designs, hot fabrication, 6922 Sunny Dale Drive, Melbourne, Florida, 32904, (321) 724-0601. Or check their web site: http://www.tempestcycles.com/

BIKERNET INTERIUM FLOW BENCH UPDATE– Check out this website www.tractorsport.com/wwwboard.html This is forum for flowbenches and dyno’s. Very good info. You can ask about a link on the forum for the “MSD Flowbench” plans.

This is what I used to start with. The link will have the pages from Popular Hot Rod 93′ MSD FLowbench article/plans. The plans are for a orifice style bench and is very similar to a Superflow 300/600 flowbench.

The forum also has info on the errors in the original flowbench plans. As for mat’l use MDF board instead of particle board, like what I used. It is more dense and alot stronger. The higher cost is worth it.

The biggest error in the plans is the width of orifice disk plate. Station #6 has the wrong size holes for the CFM stated. Next problem is with the inclined manometer. Also you need a top plenum extension that includes a baffle that the original plans do not have. This would make it look more like the SF 600.

These errors along with other things have slowed me down. Not a excuse, just fact. In the mean time check out these websites:

BIKERNET REPORT FROM IRAQ–CBS News Anchor Dan Rather, NPR Reporter Cokie Roberts, and a U.S. Marinewere hiking through the desert one day when they were captured by Iraqis. They were tied up, led to the village and brought before the leader.

The leader said, “I am familiar with your western custom of granting thecondemned a last wish. Before we kill and dismember you, do you have any last requests?”

Dan Rather said, “Well, I’m a Texan, so I’d like one last bowlful of hot, spicy chili.”

The leader nodded to an underling who left and returned with the chili.

Rather ate it all and said, “Now I can die content.”

Cokie Roberts said, “I’m a reporter to the end. I want to take out my taperecorder and describe the scene here and what’s about to happen. Maybesomeday someone will hear it and know that I was on the job ’til the end.”

The leader directed an aide to hand over the tape recorder, and Robertsdictated some comments.

She then said, “Now I can die happy.”

The leader turned and said, “And now, Mr. U.S. Marine, what is your finalwish?”

“Kick me in the ass,” said the Marine.”

“What?” asked the leader. “Will you mock us in your last hour?”

“No, I’m not kidding. I want you to kick me in the ass,” insisted theMarine.

So the leader shoved him into the open, and kicked him in the ass. TheMarine went sprawling, but rolled to his knees, pulled a 9-mm pistol frominside his cammies, and shot the leader dead. In the resulting confusion, heleapt to his knapsack, pulled out his M4 carbine, and sprayed the Iraqiswith gunfire.

In a flash, the Iraqis were dead or fleeing for their lives.

As the Marine was untying Rather and Roberts, they asked him,

“Why didn’t you just shoot them? Why did you ask them to kick you in theass?”

What!?” said the Marine, “And have you liberal assholes call ME theaggressor?”

THE BIKERNET TRAIN STORY– A man and a woman, who have never met before, find themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a Bikernet transcontinental train. Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room, the two are tired and fall asleep quickly…he in the upper bunk and she in the lower.

At 1:00 AM, he leans over and gently wakes the woman saying, “Ma’am, I’m sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet to get me a second blanket? I’m awfully cold.”

“I have a better idea,” she replies. “Just for tonight, let’s pretend that we’re married.”

“Wow! That’s a great idea!!” he exclaims.

“Good,” she replies. “Get your own damn blanket!”

After a moment of silence, he farted.

Makin’ Custom Wheel Spacers

avon - big dog

Avon Banner

Wheel spacing is an important part of any ground-up bike building project. It also must be addressed when customizing an existing bike. With the vast selection of frames and wheels available today, there is noway any manufacturer can fit every different wheel combo to their frame andprovide exact fitting wheel spacers.

Some frame manufacturers provide a wheel spacer for the left side of thewheel, most of the time this spacer is longer than needed and the exactlength is left up to the bike builder to decide and cut to length. The mostcommon reason that the frame builder only provides the left side spacer is,because the rear caliper mount doubles as the right-side wheel spacer.Again, there are a number of different width caliper mounts, mainlydepending on the style of caliper you choose.

Another factor is especially true of the new crop of wide frames designed tofit the wide tires. Some frame builders widen or offset only theleft side of the frame for belt clearance. Mix in the different width ofcustom wheel hubs and the need for drivetrain offset. The next thing you knowyou are in wheel spacer hell.

Generally motorcycle wheels should track one directly in line with the other. That’s why motorcycles are called, in some circles, asingle-track vehicle; however, this is not always the case. Harley-Davidsonoffsets the rear wheel on some of their Softail models as much as a halfinch to the left, to move the center of gravity back towards the center ofthe motorcycle. As of this writing we know of three different offsets forthe Softails. The different offsets can be found in your service manual inthe chassis section, titled vehicle alignment (page 2-30 in the H-D servicemanual for 1997-1998 Softail models, H-D part number 99482-98). Be sure tocheck the correct service manual for your particular model.

If building a ground-up bike based on a Softail-styled chassis, then buy aservice manual that closely relates to what you’re constructing. Anotherpoint to keep in mind while your fitting a rear wheel to a new frame is, thelocation of the fender mounts. (If you’re building a rigid, it is simplefitting fender struts or a sissy bar to the frame to support the rearfender. Just center the wheel and go. Remember to build fender mounts that clear the disc rotor and the drive pulley or sprocket. Also make sure the tire can be moved for belt adjustment.)

On Softail-style frames, the fender mounts are usually drilled and tappedholes at the top of the frame, just under where the seat will sit. When wefit a wheel to a frame, we like to check first where the fender struts orrails will locate in relation to the wheel and tire combo.Sometimes offsetting the wheel is necessary to be centered in the fender and so you won’t have to carve up a set of custom fender rails. Again, this all depends on the way theframe was designed and built. By placing the wheel in the center of the fender rails you’ll be able to see if the frame is offset or not. If once it’s in the center of the frame rails, it’s not in the center of the swingarm, then it’s offset. Keep it in the center of the frame rails.

The above description may sound confusing and complex, but it really isn’t.With the aid of some photos and the loan of a frame, wheel and tire at MikePowers Customs in Burbank, CA, we can show an easy way to set-up, measure, and make new rear-wheel spacers to get you up and rolling.

The following procedure can be applied to almost any style of bike. One last note… ideally, wheel spacers should be square, meaning that each end of the spacer should be parallel. The optimum tool for making wheel spacers is a lathe; however, some patience with a hacksaw and file or grinder will get the job done.

5602

01: At Mike Powers Customs in beautiful Burbank, CA we worked with a newground-up project bike. The frame is a Diamond 250series, Softail style chopper with six inches out and six inches up. Therear wheel is a Superior with a custom, wide hub laced to a 9-inch wide18-inch diameter rim. The tire is 250-40X18 Avon Venom.

5604

02: First thing is to place the frame somewhere solid. Mike uses ascissors lift with the frame strapped to the lift. Now slide the axlethrough the swing arm and wheel. Push or pull the axle all the way forwardor back to insure the axle is parallel to the swing arm pivot shaft andperpendicular to the frame centerline.

5605

03: To find the centerline of the frame, we used a piece of stringabout ten feet long.

5607

04: A simple loop tied in one end of the string and looped over theframes neck-leave some slack in the loop.

5608

05: Standing behind the wheel, pull the string tight and line it upover the center of the top frame tube.

5610

06: Mark the centerline of the frame on the frame and the swingarmwith a Sharpie (marker) to make future sightings easier.

5618

07: Measure the width of the tire and find the center of the tread.Do not rely on the seam of the tire, where the mold line is located. Measure to find the center and mark it.

5619

08: The center of our tire is about a quarter-inch from the moldseparation line.

5626

09: Mike slipped the rear drive belt over the pulley, aftermounting the rear pulley on the wheel hub. Once the wheel is located a lookdown the edge of the pulley will tell you if the pulley will needoffsetting.

5627

10: Mike clamped two strips of metal to the fender rail mountsto simulate the fender rails. Now pull the string taut and align with yourcenterline marks and center the tire on the string.

5629

11: With the tire centered on the frame centerline, check andmeasure the distance from the simulated fender struts to the edge of thetire. Also check the distance from the lower swing arm tubes to the tire, remembering that the tire will grow a little once it is up to operatingtemperature. A good rule of thumb to follow is the thickness of a fingerbetween any frame or swing arm tube and the closest part of the tire. Insure that the tire is in the center of the frame rails primarily.

5630

12: Before you start measuring for the wheel spacers cast aneyeball down both sides of the rear drive belt to see how it lines up withthe swing arm and frame. This will give you an idea if a pulley spacer will be needed, something you will have to address once the wheel spacers aremade and installed.

5631

13: When you are satisfied with the location of the wheel inrelation to the frame, swing arm and the fender rails, measure from theinside edge of the frame to the wheel bearing (2000 and later style wheel)or wheel bearing seal spacer and write the figure down.

5635

14: On the right side of the wheel move the caliper mount out boardtill it touches the inside of the swing arm, try and do this without movingthe wheel. Now carefully measure the distance between the wheel bearing andthe inside of the caliper mount and write it down. Make sure there is some clearance at the brake stop, even just a 1/16-inch. Make sure the caliper mount is also parallel with the frame.

5638

15: This photo shows the relationship of the caliper mount, whereit fits over the anchor mount, welded to the swing arm. Note the minimumamount of overlap of the caliper mount in relation to the anchor. This iswhen the caliper mount is flush against the wheel bearing.

5639

16: With the caliper mount flush against the inside of the swingarm, there is more contact or over lap of the caliper mount with the anchortab.

5777

17: Now is the time to make your new wheel spacers. Once the newspacers are completed, install them on the axle. We ended up with a spacerlength of 1.545 inches on the left. We made our spacers from 1.500 diametersteel with a .750 hole for the axle. We like the larger diameter materialbecause it gives a larger contact area against the swing arm and will notget cocked in the axle slot when you install them.

5779

18: On the right side of the wheel, we ended up needing a spacerthat was .630 inches thick again, made from the 1.500 diameter stock.

5781

19: Here is what the right side looks like with the new spacerinstalled. Since we moved the caliper mount .630 inches away from the wheelhub, we’ll have to make a disc rotor spacer the same thickness to properlylocate the disc to the caliper.

5782

20: Here is the finished product. The wheel is where we want it andthe caliper mount has plenty of contact on the anchor mount.

5785

21: The view from the back of the frame looks good. Next we’llcheck out pulley and disc rotor spacers. Remember to measure three times andcut once.

BIKERNET NEWS ALERT–HARLEY DAVIDSON SPONSORS BORN TO BE WILD GIRLS, CHOPPERS ONLY CALENDAR AND JOIN A BIKERS RIGHTS ORGANIZATION, GODDAMNIT!

CHOPPERS ONLY HAWAIIAN CALENDAR–Here’s a hot calendar commemorating the Choppers Only Bike Show in Hawaii, July 4th, on Oahu. Wanna vacation and hit a hot Bike Show, check it out. Click on their logo for more Calendar ordering info.

choppers only

NO EXCUSES, but, “Hey Man, …….. I just wanna Ride.”–That’s the excuse we hear from many riders who don’t want to get involved inbikers’ rights. Another statement we hear is … ” I am not political anddon’t care about politics.”

Being a biker and not wanting to support bikers’ rights is like being aparent and not wanting to get involved in what your kids are doing. If wecare about something, then we should get involved and learn about what weneed to do to make it better. We nurture our children because we love themand want them to be safe and grow. If we love riding our motorcycle, then weshould care about bikers rights and nurture our riding lifestyle. We shouldget involved in making sure that the future of motorcycling is brighter, more secure, and ultimately safer.By being a rider and not caring about bikers’ rights, you are making astatement. The statement you are making is that you are choosing ignorance. You are choosing to ignore the issues that effect your favorite endeavor.Next to spending time with my family, motorcycling is my favorite endeavor.I love it and I know if I ever have to give it up, I will be very sad. Iknow other riders love riding as much as I do. Yet they ignore bikers’rights issues. I cannot understand why they ignore something that they loveso much?

I live in a state that has a mandatory helmet law. In my state, many riderssay “I don’t care about repealing the mandatory helmet law, so I don’t careabout bikers’ rights.”

Bikers’ rights are not only about repealing mandatory helmet laws. Today inNorth Carolina, there are three bills that have been introduced by bikerconstituents. The helmet law is a small part of bikers’ rights. Riders whoscratch the surface will see that. They will see that there are many otherissues that effect bikers. They will see that we are all at risk. Ignorancetowards public affairs and legislation breeds an uniformed, ignorant ridingcommunity. I do not want to be ignorant concerning the issues that effect myfavorite endeavor.

Get involved now, or suffer the consequences of ignorance. Being involved inbikers’ rights doesn’t cost a lot of money. It doesn’t take a lot of time.It only takes a few minutes every week or so to read about what is going on,and communicate with your legislators on how you feel about motorcyclingissues. You can start by joining a local MRO chapter and learning about howYOUR government works.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON LISTED AS “POWER BRAND” BY FORBES MAGAZINE–In the April 19th issue of Forbes Magazine, Harley-Davidson was ranked the 25th most powerful corporate brand among U.S. companies.

Predictiv, the valuation research firm that conducted the study, investigated how reputation, innovation, management and human capital were all factors in creating a company’s brand value. Each company was ranked according to these four “intangible assets” and then given an overall rank based on brand value, sales and their market value minus tangible book.

Harley-Davidson’s overall brand value was ranked 25th; however, the company ranked considerably higher in individual intangible asset categories. Among the 25 featured companies, Harley-Davidson was ranked fourth in “Human Capital,” behind IBM, Intel and Aflac. In the “Innovation” category, Harley-Davidson was ranked 16th. Forbes cited the Harley Owners Group as a factor in maintaining Harley-Davidson’s strong brand.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPONSORS “BIKER GIRLS: BORN TO BE WILD” PREMIERE ON TLC–“Biker Girls: Born to Be Wild” premiered on The Learning Channel May 13, 2004. THE BIKERNET PERIOD–An eighteen-year-old girl tells her Mom that she has missed her periodfor two months. Very worried, the mother goes to the drugstore and buys a pregnancy kit. The test result shows that the girl is pregnant.

Shouting, cursing, crying, the mother says, “Who was the pig that didthis to you? I want to know!”

The girl picks up the phone and makes a call. Half an hour later aFerrari stops in front of their house; a mature and distinguished man with gray hair, impeccably dressed in a very expensive suit, steps out of the carand enters the house.

He sits in the living room with the father, the mother and the girl, and tells them, “Good morning, your daughter has informed me of the problem. However, I can’t marry her because of my personal family situation, butI’ll take charge. If a girl is born, I will bequeath her two retail stores, a townhouse, a beach villa and a $1,000,000 bank account. If a boy is born, my legacy will be a couple of factories and a $2,000,000 bank account. Ifit is twins, a factory and $1,000,000 each. However, if there is amiscarriage, what do you suggest I do?”

At this point, the father, who had remained silent, places a hand firmly on the man’s shoulder and tells him, “Then you try again.”

ROGUE?S NEW RIDE– My friend Phil Peterson who owns Miami Harley Davidson has been after me for years to buy a new Harley. I kept telling him I could not afford one.

He told me when I was ready to let him know and he would work some thing out for me.

Well I sold the Silver FXR I had built and some other parts and I had enough to buy a FLTHI Standard which was exactly what I wanted to start with. I added a few items from the factory that I wanted and made the deal.

Actually the deal was good enough for my friend Danny to decide to buy one also. There are a few differences in the two bike but both were good deals.

NOW I KNOW ! ! !– For a couple of years I’ve been blaming it on lack of sleep, not enoughsunshine, too much pressure from my job, earwax buildup, poor blood oranything else I could think of. But now I found out the real reason I’mtired is because I’m overworked.

Here’s why:
a. The population of this country (USA) is 273 million.
b. 140 million are retired
c. That leaves 133 million to do the work.
d. There are 85 million in school, which leaves 48 million to do the work..
e. Of this there are 29 million employed by the federal government, leaving 19 million to do the work.
f. 2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing the Taliban.
g. Which leaves 16.2 million to do the work.
h. Take from the total the 14,800,000 people who work for state and city governments.
i. And that leaves 14 million to do the work.
j. At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals,
k. Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
l. Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.
That leaves just two people to do the work. You and me. And there youare…. sitting on your ass, at your computer, reading jokes!

Nice, real nice!

FROM BANDIT’S CANTINA CHOW HALL– A wealthy man was having an affair with an Italian woman for several years. One night, during a Cantina rendezvous, she confided in him that shewas pregnant. Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he paidher a large sum of money if she would go to Italy to secretly have the child.

If she stayed in Italy to raise the child, he would also provide childsupport until the child turned 18. She agreed, but asked how he would know whenthe baby was born. To keep it discrete, he told her to simply mail him apost card, and write “Spaghetti” on the back. He would then arrange for childsupport payments to begin. One day, about 9 months later, he came hometo his confused wife.

“Honey,” she said, “you received a very strange postcard today.”

“Oh, just give it to me and I’ll explain it later,” he said. Thewife obeyed, and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, andfainted.

On the card was written: “Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Two withmeatballs, one without.”

CRAZY HORSE PAINT JOB OF THE WEEK–Was I ever this young? There have been far too many brutal work weeks in the many years since this picture was taken. This week is one of them and the next weeks will only get worse. Long hours will hopefully result in taking some time off to paint this shack I call a house and enjoy a wonderful Sturgis.

That’s the way this business is, we are already working so hard for an event in August, that June and July feel like blinks of an eye. Working on Myrtle Beach articles for Bikernet and The Horse, whacking away on the final bits of the book, and trying to get four paint jobs out the door in the next 2 weeks, plus attempting to mantain my “girlish” figure so I don’t scare folks at the Smoke Out, has been taking a toll on me. I need a week of relaxation and fine food at Bandit’s Cantina and dockside resort.

Plus I am finding I may have problem concerning my chopper. I really like it. So much so, I don’t think I’m going to sell it. My husband informed me, he does not want to ever do this much fabrication work again. Just thinking about the hours he has in the oil tank alone are enough to make him whine endlessly. But if I ride it a whole bunch, it will get wear and tear and the investment it was supposed to be, will not be worth much. But the bike has that magic touch. Everyone who sits on the bike or even moves it around, talks about how great it feels, how nicely balanced it is. And it rides even better. I would have no problem selling it as is captivates anyone who comes near. Problem is, it has also captivated me.

By the way, if anyone recognizes the guy in this picture, Earl from Pompano Beach, have him contact me. I miss my ol’ riding buddy.

CH - fintnk.JPG_1

This week’s paint presented quite a challenge. The customer had a color in mind he had seen on a sports car. But the car company had problems with the consistancy of the paint color. And when I looked up the color in the paint book, it had no where near the spark and life of the color the customer had described. It just looked like a dull, bland blue.

CH - finff

So House of Kolor came to the rescue. Their True Blue Pearl Shimron made a great basecoat after I layered some of their Oriental Blue Candy over it. But what really brought it all together are the lime green pinstripes. The blue and purple looked really blah together until those stripes woke up all the colors. If everything I’m working on now turns out this good, all these hours will be worth it. In a few weeks I’ll have some news for those in the Carolinas who would love to have a new sportster with some Crazy Horse Paint in their garage. Right now I gotta get back to work. I’d rather jump in that picture up top and run off among the palm trees, find my old sporty, and ride into the sunny Florida day. Where’s that time machine?

BIKERNET NEWS ALERT– STURGIS MUSEUM RAFFLE, COMPU-FIRE JOINS BIKERNET, CARIBBEAN REPORT AND AMERICAN CHOPPER UNDER FIRE

Continued From Page 1

american choppers

AMERICAN CHOPPER GET HEAT– The hit reality series “American Chopper” draws millions of viewers every week to the Discovery Channel, but according to secret documents obtained by BBC News, British actors portray the show’s popular characters, Paul Sr., Paul Jr., and Mikey. Questions about the show’s legitimacy first surfaced back in February after an AOL, Top Speed, commercial showed Mikey taking off in a souped-up motorcycle, soaring thousands of feet into the air before apparently crashing to the ground.

“Those AOL commercials really raised a lot of suspicions,” said Wendy Melillo of Adweek. “How could Mikey survive after such a violent incident? People eventually started asking questions about whether the show is a work of fiction.”

The show’s main character, Paul Teutul Sr., runs a customizing motorcycle shop like an angry football coach, constantly yelling and swearing at his sons, Paul Jr. and Mikey. Paul Sr. frequently charges into the shop like an irritated bull, using his mammoth handlebar mustache to intimidate his sons and staff. But behind the rage and the mustache, according to a BBC News report, is Jeffries Willard Kendall III, a Shakespearean trained thespian. Kendall is a celebrated homosexual and has appeared in a number of independent films and failed TV dramas in England.

“British viewers know that Jeffries is an extremely delicate man,” said BBC News investigative reporter Robin Horston. “However, it’s impossible to recognize Jeffries with all the latex and special makeup. They have done a brilliant job in transforming this frail, effeminate man into Paul Sr., one of the roughest, crudest men on reality television.”

The revelation is sending shockwaves throughout the reality television world which is still reeling after last year’s scandalous disclosure that the entire cast of Bravo’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Man” are, in fact, heterosexual. One of the “Fab Five” is a construction worker in the tri-state area.

BBC News obtained secret documents from the Discovery Channel which reveal the British actors? names, and acquired scripts for future episodes of “American Chopper.”

We’ll report more in the Sunday Post.

THE NORTH CAROLINA STEALTH REPORT–I decided this past week to get some ink work done. Before this addition I had three tattoos. Two are memorial tattoos, one in memory of my son Justin, one in memory of my Dad, the other is an H-D tattoo.

tattoo stealth

For this tattoo I wanted something that illustrates the spirit of riding and something that reflects the way I feel when I ride. I didn’t want anything with H-D on it, as everyone and his brother have that inked on their ass nowadays. The tattoo shows a guy with the wind in his hair riding on the clouds. The bike in the tattoo is very close to the memorial bike I built in memory of my son Justin. It shows a rigid frame, jockey shift set up, also like the memorial bike. The tattoo has an attitude about it and to me when my time is up, I hope to ride those clouds to see Justin and my Dad again one day. To me a tattoo has to have a deep meaning, it has to reflect a time or something signifcant in my life. That is why the H-D tattoo has lost a lot of what it used to mean to me. Well that is my feelings on tattoos, I am sure you all have your own.

run for breath
The memorial bike I built in “Memory of Justin” will be at the 6th Annual Run for Breath July 25th here in Charlotte. The bike only gets ridden on special days like this since it is a memorial bike. The planning continues for the run. All the sponsorhip funds are in and I would like to thank all the sponsors for their contributions. With out you there would be no Run for Breath.

This weekend, Memorail day weekend, I am blasting back to Virginia to visit my family and friends. Sunday morning we head out to the annual Rolling Thunder Run To The Wall. I always look froward to this run beacuase it is more than just a run. It is a time to pay respects and say “Thank You” to all who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom that we all enjoy. I will have pictures along with my take on the run next week. I am sure their will be some interesting topics to write about, until then RIDE!

compufire

COMPU-FIRE JOINS BIKERNET–One of our lofty goals at Bikernet is to bring our readers sponsors they can trust and rely on for quality components and reliable service. This is one of those opportunities. I have worked with Compu-Fire for over five years installing their electrical components on every project bike I’ve built from the Jesse James Red Ball to our current Amazing Shrunken FXR project and my up-coming rigid bar hopper.

Here’s another major benefit: Compu-Fire manufacturers virtually everything needed to square away your ignition system, charging system and starting system. One source for all your electrical components. I suggested they start on a coil bracket and an ignition switch.

Another benefit is their staff. Most are experienced riders working with their products. Giggie, who I’ve known for almost 20 years, is constantly testing and improving their product line. This is a company based in Southern California, building their products in the USA.

Hang on as we bring you their product line, through techs and product releases and riding experiences.

BIKERNET CARIBBEAN REPORT–Once more this weeks news will be short and painless cause I really don’t want to repeat the same old story. You know, lots of things to do, not enough time and not enough helping hands. So here we go….

First I really want to thank Fritz, one of our readers who hooked me up big time with the floorboard rubbers and a few other things as well. Thanks a lot man!

We’ve heard that Jesse is back with Monster garage, what the fuck, if there’s no Jesse, there’s no show…..

Speaking of shows, here’s the schedule for all the Discovery Channel motorcycle shows coming up in the month of June; it will be a feast for those of us who like Bikes…

June 20th, that’s a Sunday and Fathers day to boot. Motorcycle Mania 3 will air showing Jesse James and Kid Rock riding into the burrito infested shores of Mexico
June 21st, Monday , at 10:00 pm is Biker Build Off 5, featuring Hank Young and Chica
June 22nd Tuesday at 10:00 pm is Bike Build off 6
June 23rd Wed at 10:00 pm , Bike Build off 7
June 24th Thur at 10:00 pm Bike build off 8

All I know about the shows is that Hank Young vs Chica , Arlen Ness vs Cory Ness in Hawaii, Eddie Trotta vs Russell Mitchel, Kendall Johnson, Martin brothers and Match Hotch are thrown in the mix (I’m forgetting someone, so what’s new ?) and number ten will be special show, I’ll just give you a hint, 20 hands on one bike…. and Hugh was the winner !!!

Been between the shop, concerts and games, for those who give a fuck, never got to see Barry Bonds knock one out of the park. He tried, but no cigar. Fiel a la Vega, a local PR band and our good friends, was sold out and did a super show, one guy from the audience even had the balls to propose amid concert. Later that night we went over to watch the Skatalites, for those who like reggae/ska, those guys are the granddaddies of them all. Then off to the professional soccer games. Yeap, to play you got to pay so it’s triple overtime at the shop….

If anyone here works for Vans, send me an e-mail and lets talk biz…. Maybe if I get a Discovery show I might get my own signature Vans, like Billy has his Sha-Sha shoes..One thing will be for sure, I need more….

Heard that Bandit is going to Monster garage, just at the same time I will be heading to Hawaii, who knows, I might do a stop over and go visit. If for one thing, it will be very interesting…

Enough, I’m on my way to New York City. See you next week….

BIKERNET FISHING ADVICE– The day after losing his wife in a boating accident, a man answered hisdoor to find two grim-faced Alaska State Troopers, one of which was Trooper Baker.

“We’re sorry to call on you at this hour, Mr. Wilkens, but we have some information about your wife.”

“Tell me! Did you find her?” the man cried.

The troopers looked at each other. Baker said, “We have some bad news, some good news, and some really great news. Which do you want to hear first?”

Fearing the worst, Mr. Wilkens said, “Give me the bad news first.” The trooper said, “I’m sorry to tell you, sir, but this morning we found your wife’s body in Kachemak Bay.”

“Oh my God!” said Mr. Wilkens, overcome by emotion. Swallowing hard, he asked, “What’s the good news?”

The trooper continued. “When we pulled her up she had two five-poundking crabs and a half-dozen good size Dungeness crabs on her.”

Stunned, Mr. Wilkens demanded, “If that’s the good news, then what’s the great news?”

The trooper said, “We’re going to pull her up again tomorrow.”

BIKERNET READER’S BIKE OF THE WEEK.

ASS JOKE– A boy rode on a donkey and the old man walked. As they went along somepeople remarked “it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy wasriding.”

The man and boy thought perhaps the critics were right, so theychanged positions.

Later, they passed some people that remarked, “what a shame, he makesthat little boy walk.” They decided they would both walk.

Soon they passed some people who thought they were stupid to walk whenthey had a decent donkey to ride. So they both rode the donkey.

Now they passed some people who shamed them by saying “how awful to putsuch a load on a poor donkey.” The boy and old man decided they wereprobably right so they decided to carry the donkey.

As they crossed a bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and hefell into the river and drowned.

Lesson: If you try to please everyone you will eventually lose your ass.

daytona couple on bike

LET’S BAIL AND RIDE–I need a new saloon to hang at. There’s a local one across from the Union Hall, but you need a code word to get in. It’s supposedly a crack house. I’ll pass.

All is not doom and gloom. If we’re lucky, I’ll post a hot Daytona Report today from Frank Kaisler. We perused the shots last night and he photographed the girls of Bike Week masterfully. His mission was to cover the bikes and girls and he hit the nail on the head. Hang on.

We also have Jay’s CFL bike and a 1914 Indian racers to post, but first we need to fight the plumber, get an emergency SBC, DSL, crew back out here, and our Site Server needs to wake up.

BIKERNET NEWS FLASH–CARIBBEAN REPORT, FAT TIRE KIT FROM BIG BOAR, BANDIT ON MONSTER GARAGE, JANKLOW RELEASED AND CRAZY HORSE HITS MYRTLE BEACH

Continued From Page 3

CH girl

CRAZY HORSE RIDES TO MYRTLE BEACH–I’ll be submitting a full report on Myrtle beach next week, but here’s a few teaser shots for now. As always, the best part of the trip was the ride there and back. The weather was perfect and the road was full of bikes making the trip. The Sportster ran great. The days were hot but the nights were totally freaky. I was staying with the Wall of Death crew at the Broken Spoke so I didn’t have to venture out at night. Good thing too, cos the riding stupid were out in force. What is it about the Myrtle Beach Rally that makes riders lose all their common sense? Downtown Myrtle was too much. The Doghouse Bar should have been called the nuthouse.

CH high

The bikes around were interesting to say the least. Myrtle Beach is not a big chopper event like Daytona or Sturgis. But the biggest chopper event is barely a month away. The chopper faithul are making plans to ride to The Horse BackStreet Choppers’ yearly event, the Smoke Out. Folks are riding in from as far away as California and Texas. Indian Larry, Hank Young, and Billy Lane will be among the celebrity bike builders strolling around. But the real stars of this event are the bikes. No place else will you see more interesting creations and some of the tales behind these creations are as cool as the bikes.

CH eagle

This week’s paint job is an oldie but still pretty cool. The deadline for my book is a mere five weeks away. So I’ve been writing and painting like a fanatic. The three days I took off for Myrtle Beach was a welcome and much needed break. Part of me is still out there, watching the countryside glide by, seeing the sun move across the sky, watching the clouds- checking to see if it may rain or storm, hoping for a break from the relentless sun, wondering where I’ll stop for some lunch. Ah, this work thing sucks. All I know is I need to spend more time out on the road, just me and Sporty.

BIKERNET RELATIONSHIP ADVICE– One night, as a couple lays down for bed, the husband starts rubbing his wife’s arm. JANKLOW FINISHES 100-DAY JAIL TERM–A trim and smiling Bill Janklow walked out of jail Monday almost a free man.The former governor and congressman was released after serving 100 days for the traffic death of Minnesota farmer Randy Scott and rode off in a gray Isuzu with a friend, thus finishing a chapter on the most publicized lockup in South Dakota history.

Janklow, 64, made no comment as he walked past news reporters shortly after 9 a.m. to his ride waiting outside Minnehaha County’s Public Safety Building in downtown Sioux Falls.

“We love you, Bill!,” one supporter, Matt Rost, 31, shouted from the parking lot.

Janklow hugged Jeremiah Murphy, a Sioux Falls lawyer and longtime friend, then got into the sport utility vehicle, where Gerald Teunissen waited in the driver’s seat. They also hugged and shook hands, then drove off onto Minnesota Avenue.

About 75 people were outside the jail on a cool, gray morning, with half of them from the news media. Several spectators stood 100 to 200 feet away in the parking lot.

“He was not demanding,” jail warden Michelle Boyd said of Janklow’s time under her watch. “He was not high-maintenance. He was actually very quiet.”

Apart from the media attention, “I wouldn’t have known he was there,” Boyd said.

Certain things will not be in his plans for now. Janklow can’t drive, can’t carry a gun, can’t practice law and can’t leave the state without a permit.

But he is free to vote and will be free of his conviction for second-degree manslaughter if he fulfills the terms of the three-year probation Circuit Judge Rodney Steele assigned him in January. In 2007, the felony will be wiped from his record.

SOMETHING THAT DIDN’T MAKE THE NEWS– Maybe you’d like to hear about something other than idiot Reservists and naked Iraqis.

Proud graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology. Husband and about-to-be father. First lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. And a genuine hero. The secretary of the Navy said so yesterday.

At 29 Palms in California Brian Chontosh was presented with the Navy Cross, the second highest award for combat bravery the United States can bestow.

That’s a big deal. But you won’t see it on the network news tonight, and all you read in Brian’s hometown newspaper was two paragraphs of nothing. Instead, it was more blather about some mental defective MPs who acted like animals.

The odd fact about the American media in this war is that it’s not covering the American military. The most plugged-in nation in the world is receiving virtually no true information about what its warriors are doing. Oh, sure, there’s a body count. We know how many Americans have fallen. And we see those same casket pictures day in and day out. And we’re almost on a first-name basis with the pukes who abused the Iraqi prisoners. And we know all about improvised explosive devices and how we lost Fallujah and what Arab public-opinion polls say about us and how the world hates us.

We get a non-stop feed of gloom and doom. But we don’t hear about the heroes. The incredibly brave GIs who honorably do their duty. The ones our grandparents would have carried on their shoulders down Fifth Avenue.

The ones we completely ignore. Like Brian Chontosh. It was a year ago on the march into Baghdad. Brian Chontosh was a platoon leader rolling up Highway 1 in a humvee. When all hell broke loose. Ambush city. The young Marines were being cut to ribbons. Mortars, machine guns, rocket propelled grenades. And the kid out of Churchville was in charge. It was do or die and it was up to him.

So he moved to the side of his column, looking for a way to lead his men to safety. As he tried to poke a hole through the Iraqi line his humvee came under direct enemy machine gun fire. It was fish in a barrel and the Marines were the fish.

And Brian Chontosh gave the order to attack. He told his driver to floor the humvee directly at the machine gun emplacement that was firing at them. And he had the guy on top with the .50 cal unload on them. Within moments there were Iraqis slumped across the machine gun and Chontosh was still advancing, ordering his driver now to take the humvee directly into the Iraqi trench that was attacking his Marines. Over into the battlement the humvee went and out the door Brian Chontosh bailed, carrying an M16 and a Beretta and 228 years of Marine Corps pride. And he ran down the trench. With its mortars and riflemen, machineguns and grenadiers.

And he killed them all.

He fought with the M16 until he was out of ammo. Then he fought with the Beretta until it was out of ammo. Then he picked up a dead man’s AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo. Then he picked up another dead man’s AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo.

At one point he even fired a discarded Iraqi RPG into an enemy cluster, sending attackers flying with its grenade explosion.

When he was done Brian Chontosh had cleared 200 yards of entrenched Iraqis from his platoon’s flank. He had killed more than 20 and wounded at least as many more. But that’s probably not how he would tell it. He would probably merely say that his Marines were in trouble, and he got them out of trouble. Hoo-ah, and drive on.

I believe the last time a President said that, he was looking underhis desk.”

BIKERNET CARIBBEAN REPORT–Time is flying. One of the few things that worry me is time. We all are trying to beat deadlines and I for one hate “having” to do something. But, I guess it comes with the territory. There use to be a time when I would do what the hell I wanted to while things could wait. If there was a trip, I was gone, but I guess it all has to do with growing up, and worst a dreaded word, responsibility.

Although my preference in bikes is Old School, I still wonder when I see all these kids today, maybe I wish I was ten years younger, maybe fifteen. You look at girls today, with their tight bodies and form shaping jeans. Internet and computers are available for everyone who goes to school, just imagine how much easier school life would have been if we had Internet back then. You see kids making a living, and a very well one, by skating, snow boarding, skate boarding and surfing. Stuff that some of us used to do, but it was kind of expensive or just a plain hobby. No multi million-dollar contracts back then, just a fervent desire to do what you loved. I see guys who are not even 25 and moving such immense amounts of money that it’s scary, is it the times, is it the extreme consumerism? Your guess is as good as mine.

Then again, being a kid growing in these times must be difficult. Values and all that the word complies are almost lost. Maybe I’m just jealous cause I see a lot of these kids having way more fun that I could have when I was their age. Then again we can’t follow trends and we can’t live through the TV set. Don’t get me wrong, I have done my share of damage, and I’m very pleased of the life I have lived and who I am, but man, those guys are have way too much stuff going on.

So with all this said, don’t blame the older guys for making their business grow, for getting those things that we all work really hard to achieve, you really want to freak out, watch E channel and check how much money these actors, celebrities and athletes make, and spend like it was nothing. (I guess it’s nothing to them) I remember when I had to save every red cent for a long time in order to get a new surfboard. I’ve seen guys break three boards in three waves, nothing to it. Or let’s talk about tattoos, back then (which is not that far back) you got some ink and you were the oddity. Full sleeves are as normal as baseball caps. Piercing all over, I bet younger people would not even pass through airport security, and still that has become the norm. Big tit’s (fake or not) skimpy dresses, your crack sticking out (male or female) and all that latest fashion stuff; do you remember when you saw some chicks bra thru her shirt, yeap a cheap thrill, just like that, it’s nothing now.

I guess things change for the better or for worse. Who am I to judge? Like the big hoopla these past weeks about the what to wear or whom to be, again, one of the biggest gains in this newer generation is that they want to be someone, sometimes while copying others, but still being themselves. Non-conforming younger people. I really think they don’t give a flying fuck what society in general think of them or the way they dress or are. True there’s a lack of proper identity, whites want to be black, black want to be whatever, some people want to be in Jerry Springer and others don’t give a fuck about real life, but just communicate with a computer screen. Nerds are filthy rich…I guess you follow, but then again there will always be leaders and there will always be followers. That does not change with the times, and I dare to say, it never will.

I know this has nothing to do with motorcycles but I tell you what; I am around motorcycles every single day so give me a break and let me rant about other things…. As long as it makes us think.By the way, while you are staring at the computer screen, trying to figure out my latest insanity. Check out what I see when I’m writing these words.

Life in the tropics is the best life. I wish I did not have as many things to do so I could enjoy it more.

I’ll see you guys next week, maybe I’ll have something more interesting to say. Remember that all the Discovery shows are coming soon. I have not gone to an event since Miami and have nothing to critic….

SOUIX FALLS–SLEW OF VIOLATIONS LEADS TO ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC CAMERAS–Flashes from cameras at the busy intersection of Minnesota Avenue and 10th Street don’t always mean a motorist will end up with a warning letter or a fine.

But the 544 incidents recorded in a five-day test period at the downtown intersection already have city officials thinking of other intersections where red-light cameras might be employed.

If the cameras work, similar systems could follow at 41st Street and Louise Avenue and at 49th Street and Louise, said Kevin Smith, Sioux Falls assistant director of public works.

“We don’t have anything budgeted right now,” Smith said. “We need to see how this works.”

THAT’S IT–I’ve been invited to be apart of a Monster Garage segment with Don Hotop, Billy Westbrook, Lou Falcigno, and Kenny Boyce. Filming is due to begin the 28th of June. The players may change though, and I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, we’re still struggling to bring you our combined Laughlin Report. Our SBC DSL lines are down for the second time since installation less than two months ago. Watch out for these guys. We hooked up SBC phones, DSL and Dish television. The Dish is down constantly, the DSL doesn’t work any better than a slow modem and customer service is a struggle.

We have our own personal Laughlin saga, Franks hottest bikes of Laughlin, general reports and of course, the babes. Hang on. We’re launching a new Life and Times and Chapter 23 of Chance in the Cantina. I’m working on a chapter of the Cantina series, and there’s new techs coming to Bikernet.

belt drive

Don’t forget to hit the Door Prize contests on Bikernet and in the Cantina. We have a brand new set of leather clad H-D Sportster saddlebags to give away next week, Samson gift certificates all the time, Bikernet Hats and A BDL Softail Belt drive this week. The belt drive will work with any softail, and whoever wins, must be able to bring his or her bike to Bikernet for the installation. Please, only serious Softail owners for the belt drive. Enter the contest areas anytime and as often as you want, then hit the road. Let’s party.

Ride Forever,
