Hey,
Talk about a year full of hopes, dreams and adventures. From Bikernet’s standpoint we have more readers than ever before, we’re headed to Bonneville and I hope to publish another book this year. Hell, I have the honor to work with Hugh King and Original Productions on the next Motorcycle Mania and the best one yet.
But as a group of street warriors we are facing some wild challenges this year with the EPA, Noise Police and the NHTSA. Twice in the news below I ran releases on new NHTSA’s thoughts for the future. I did that in hopes that more riders would take the time to check the government site and respond. I always try to look as these efforts as opportunities to educate the straight world to our plights and make suggestions that force officials to think out of the box.
For instance: Twenty years ago I suggested to the DOT that they create a biker lane on freeways and interstates. Since then bicycle and HOV lanes were instituted. This could be another opportunity to promote a lane between general traffic, or the number one lane and the HOV lane for motorcycles. This would also eliminate the need for lane splitting discussions, or in a sense be a lane-splitting test.
On some Los Angeles Freeways the buffer between the HOV lanes and number one are wide enough already for motorcycles. Anything we can do to raise the awareness of motorcyclists and allow us space away from the people who cause between 70-85 percent of all motorcycle accidents will save lives. Let’s hit the news, then I’ll hit on the noise issue:
BIKERS ROLL OT SOLDIER FUNERALS– FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – Wearing vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls around the country from one soldier’s funeral to another, cheering respectfully to overshadow jeers from church protesters.
They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders, and they are more than 5,000 strong, forming to counter anti-gay protests held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at military funerals.Phelps believes American deaths in Iraq are divine punishment for a country that he says harbors homosexuals. His protesters carry signs thanking God for so-called IEDs – explosives that are a major killer of soldiers in Iraq.
The bikers shield the families of dead soldiers from the protesters, and overshadow the jeers with patriotic chants and a sea of red, white and blue flags.
“The most important thing we can do is let families know that the nation cares,” said Don Woodrick, the group’s Kentucky captain. “When a total stranger gets on a motorcycle in the middle of winter and drives 300 miles to hold a flag, that makes a powerful statement.”
At least 14 states are considering laws aimed at the funeral protesters, who at a recent memorial service at Fort Campbell wrapped themselves in upside-down American flags. They danced and sang impromptu songs peppered with vulgarities that condemned homosexuals and soldiers.
The Patriot Guard was also there, waving up a ruckus of support for the families across the street. Community members came in the freezing rain to chant “U-S-A, U-S-A” alongside them.

BIKERNET SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH STUDY–Do Larger Breasts Equal Lower Grades? Online Voters Say ‘Yes’.
An unscientific survey on a popular Web site suggests that stereotypical beliefs about women hold true in 2006, at least among Internet surfers.
The Web site analyzed hundreds of votes that had been cast since May and found that there was a very strong correlation between female bra size and perceived grade point average. On average, voters guessed that “A-cup” students had GPAs that were 0.3 points higher than those of “D-cup” students. “B-cup” and “C-cup” students were voted to have GPAs in the middle of that range, each averaging about 0.2 points higher than the “D-cup” group. The study also found a correlation between race and grades. Specifically, voters guessed that Asian students had higher GPAs than their Caucasian and African-American counterparts by an average of more than 0.2 points (on a 4.0 scale). The site’s founders warned against interpreting the results of their survey as anything but entertainment. “We have no reason to believe that there is an actual link between any of these attributes and grade point average,” said WhatsMyImage.com co-founder Sameer Shariff. “This analysis simply suggests that our voters may subscribe to the stereotypes reflected in its results.” Bikernet research analysts don’t give a shit. “Our panel of doctors feel a strong attraction to boobs, no matter what the size or GPA,” said Dr. Wilburn Roach. –Rogue BIKERNET INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS STUDY–At the currency exchange window at the local bank, an Asian guy was trying to exchange yen for dollars, and he was a little agitated. He asked the teller, “Why it change? Yesterday I get two hunat dolla fo yen — today I get hunat eighty? Why it change?” The teller says, “Fluctuations.” The Asian guy snaps back, “Fluc you white guys too!” –from Joe Lankau BIKERNET INDIAN INVESTIGATION–Dear Sir, I recently purchased an Indian Chief roadmaster 2003 with a vin #5CDNRCAJ23GO11039. Do you know from this vin when this bike was produced? I have heard that the bike had some oil/lower end problems with this new PowerPlus engine and am wondering if I need to fix the possible flaws with my bike. Any help and references would be most appreciated. –David peters Tell David to get in touch with Mike Dolecki @ 321-952-9333 ….this is THE MAN on those motors- he handles ’em all. Tell David to mention that U.S. Choppers sent him- he’ll get the hook up. -Rick U.S. Choppers RED ALERT-NHTSA ANNOUNCED UPDATED HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM–Open Comment PeriodThe Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports the National Highway TrafficSafety Administration (NHTSA) has announced its intention to update theexisting guidelines for state highway safety programs. Guideline Three:Motorcycle Safety, is one of the six guidelines facing revision. NHTSA undergoes an amendment process every four to six years to expand itsareas of focus. NHTSA’s charter favors the promotion of highway safetyhowever, if a topic is not specifically mentioned in the safety programguidelines, NHTSA can not advocate on its behalf. The twelve amendments to the motorcycle safety component are generated byNHTSA behind closed doors with no input from the riding community. The opencomment period affords our nation’s motorcyclists the only opportunity theywill have to voice their opinion on the potential revisions. To inspect the amendments printed in the Federal Register and to submitcomments to the Docket go to the following website: http://dms.dot.gov. Toview the amendments perform a “simple search” for Docket number 23090. Inorder to submit comments, register on the government’s site and proceed byfollowing the on-screen instructions. You may also mail hard copies to: Docket Management Room PL-401, 400 SeventhStreet, SW., Washington, DC 20590. “The Motorcycle Riders Foundation commends NHTSA for putting a strongemphasis on the development of sound rider education and training. The MRFalso appreciates the Administration’s attempt to address the growing backlogin rider education programs. However, we are troubled with NHTSA’s positionwhich contends all states should have a mandatory helmet laws” says JeffHennie, MRF Vice President of Government Relations. “The US Senate voteddown a mandatory helmet measure, the Lautenberg Amendment, just last May.The resulting veto should have sent a message making it clear this is asubject NHTSA needs to stay away from” Hennie added. “The Motorcycle RidersFoundation supports states rights and contends each one should be able todetermine the type and extent of helmet use law in their particular state.” The Motorcycle Riders Foundation encourages all motorcyclists to read theproposed amendments and use this unique opportunity to submit clear, straightforward comments. The current submission deadline is March 13th,2006 but MRF is requesting a deadline extension to allow additional time fora complete review of these important items. The proposed amendments do notplace any restrictions on the motorcycle safety grant program contained inthe recent Highway Bill (PL 109-59). For any additional information contact the MRF Washington DC office by phone202-546-0983 or by email at jeff@mrf.org. ANOTHER MADD, BUT IT’S MOTORCYCLISTS AGAINST DUMB DRIVERS– I appreciate reading your bikers rights page, and now have a recommendation which I hope you would consider. At the outset of your bikers rights page you say that we must get involved in the bikers rights movement. I believe that M-A-D-D provides one good way in which every biker can get involved, and make a difference on an issue common to all of us, reducing the dangers we face on the road as the result of the dumb ass moves of auto drivers. M-A-D-D supports ABATE in its defense of our right to chose by refocusing the motorcyclist safety issue where it belongs – on the overwhelming majority of accidents and injuries caused by auto drivers ignorant of motorcycle safety issues, and the driving strategies which auto drivers must adopt for the protection of motorcyclists. Please just consider the content of the web site, http://www.m-a-d-d.com/ we ask merely that you consider the merit of its mission, and if you agree to please (1) bring the site to the attention of your readers on your bikers rights page; and (2) please provide a permanent link from your web site to ours so that the site itself will be more readily available to those searching the Internet for the answer to how we can reduce the dangers we face as motorcyclists. In the last paragraph of this e-mail I provide link language in html to describe M-A-D-D and its mission. Motorcyclists Against Dumb Drivers – the Premise. The premise of the web site is that auto driver “ignorance” of motorcycle safety issues including auto driver “ignorance” of motorcycle accident avoidance strategies is the root cause of most of the dangers we face as bikers – hence the name of the site, “Motorcyclists Against Dumb Drivers,” http://www.m-a-d-d.com/ ANOTHER GODDAMN BIKERNET SURVEY–RECENT STUDY FOUND OUT WHICH DAYS MEN PREFER TO HAVE SEX. IT WAS FOUND THAT MEN PREFERRED TO ENGAGE IN SEXUAL ACTIVITY ON THE DAYS THAT STARTED WITH THE LETTER “T”.EXAMPLES OF THOSE DAYS ARE AS FOLLOWS: TUESDAY –from Chris T. I don’t understand. After the last child was born, she told me we had to cutback on expenses, I had to give up drinking beer. I was not a big drinkermaybe a 12 pack on weekends. Anyway, I gave it up but I noticed the other day she came home from groceryshopping and when I looked at the receipt and saw $45 in makeup. I said, “Wait a minute I’ve given up beer and you haven’t given up anything!” She said, “I buy that makeup for you, so I can look pretty for you.” I told her, “That’s what the beer was for!” I don’t think she’ll be back. –from Rick Savenko Continued On Page 2

The Art Of Harley-Davidson
By Bandit |
I recently had the opportunity to roll in to Rancho Santa Fe,California and witness the unveiling of Scott Jacobs latestpainting, “Photo Finish”. All three champions depicted in the painting,Chris Carr, Scott Parker andJay Springsteen knelt down for a photo opportunity in the setting Californiasun in front of Scott’slatest masterpiece. The crowd of media representatives was dazzled by hisprecise workmanshiponce more.
That did it. I felt that I needed to share with the brothersand sisters of Bikernet the history of Segal Fine Art and themotorcycling eye-candy that accompanies it. The story is one of apassion for Harleys that comes alive in so many creative forms. Perhaps I cansimply give you a taste of some of the aspects of this wonderful history inwords, like a man separated from his woman for a long period, thesensation he has when he first touches the delicate fuzz on herforearm and feels the comforting sensation rush through him. A custom bike or the art that represents it can afford me that rush.
Ron started this business in 1984 representing two talentedartists Ting Shao Quan and Marco Sassone. By the early ’90s Ron hadacquired 60 employees and established Segal Fine Art and GregoryEditions. When I asked Greg Segal, Ron’s son, the ingredient to Ron’ssuccess he said, “He is a very good businessman and he treats people fairly.” Thebusiness consisted of representing these art talents, selling theiroriginals and determining which art pieces would be good material forlimited edition prints or lithos.
Ron was riding an eye-candy wave that began in his Woodland Hills, CAgarage, but the professional art world wiped out in the ’90s.Segal split off from Gregory Editions and began to ride out the pooreconomic conditions.
In 1993, Scott Jacobs owned an art gallery and was a Segalcustomer. His representative was Ron Copple who visited Scott fromtime to time. Scott owned a Fatboy and had been a dirtbike competitor since he was a kid. Scott painted portraits of famouspeople, when Ron suggested that he paint his passion, motorcycles. Hedid and his second piece was “Live To Ride” which the Segal groupdecided to print. They hit on the road and went to Sturgis where they setup a 10 by 10 booth on Main and woke up to a 9:00 a.m. opening, working the booth until midnight. Amongst their visitors were a few H-D execs who were moved by Scott’s abilities and the Segalpresentation. That helped open a door at the factory that had never beenajar in the past. Scott became the first Harley-Davidson licensedartist.
“FatBoy 2000” by Jacobs
An evolution began to take place throughout the dealernetwork. In the beginning, dealers did not purchase the prints forsale, but generally to decorate their dealerships. The Segal groupbegan a training process to teach dealers how to sell prints of limited edition, finemotorcycle art. It wasn’t until ’99 that 400 dealers carried theirart. There are 85 pieces currently available, some dealers carry a stock of 30or more and some buy every new piece that becomes available. As youreyes wander through some of these works you’ll understand why somedealers want at least one fine example of each creation. Theycurrently have three motorcycle artists creating masterworks ofHarley-Davidson related art. In a standard edition they print 100 smallsized prints, 150 medium sized prints, 100 large and an additional 100 deluxe prints on canvas.
You can imagine that with each creation comes a certainamount of notoriety. The launching of each piece is tantamount tohaving a child or building a new bike and having it recognized with afeature. I don’t know if I can explain accept by example. If a dealerannies up to buy a particular package of prints, a representative ofSegal and one of their three artists will hop a flight out to thedealership for a special event. Recently, such an occasion took placeat the Wild Boar H-D in Hudsonville, Michigan near Grand Rapids. Greg wasimpressed by a every day looking rider who entered the shop with his wife. They immediately fell in love with David Uhl’s Enthusiast and withoutblinking plunked $2,550 for the 100th anniversary canvas. Before the night was over, they purchased another piece of art and an ’03 two tone Heritage Springer. As it turned outthe man has been fighting bone-marrow cancer for years. The treatments had rendered him too weak to handle certain situations on his bike. Instead of giving up on riding, he switched to a side car. Now his cancer is in remission and he feels strong enough to ride, thus the Springer. “That was a couple was everything that I love about this job in a nutshell. They were passionate about life, riding, the artwork and each other.”
That same night another couple came into the dealership andthe mister was moved by one of the pieces on display called “Catch ofthe Day”. As a matter of fact, he must have stared at it for half an hour. Uncomfortable with spending the $700 plus for the piece he shrugged his shoulders andleft the dealership. His wife snuck back in and dropped a creditcard on the counter. Scott made a point to personalize the print, andlater that evening the couple returned to the dealership. When he saw the “Sold” sign on his piece, he was crushed. Upon looking closer he noticed that the sign was actually an anniversary card from his wife. He was so moved by the inscription, the art and his wife’s efforts that he and everyone around got a little emotional.
Another time Greg flew to Oaxaca, Mexico to celebrate a oncein a life time HOG rally in the small mountain community. Each yearthe Mexican HOG Group travels to another city to celebrate the rally. The
Segal group shipped lithos and canvas prints unframed to thedealership. The locals framed each selection in the traditional bold, bright green andblood red frames. “The choice of the frames had nothing to do with bringing out subtle highlights in the image,” Greg said cringing, “but the people lovedthem.” Willie G. and Jeff Bleustein rode in the parade through townwhich drew people out of the hills who had never seen a Harley in the community that was home to Mayan ruins. “The response was an incredible experience. Everybody on a bike was treated like a celebrity.”Greg said.
As you will see, we have examples and biographies on eachartist. This year is obviously special with the 100th anniversaryand four fine art lithographs to represent this historic birthday. “Growing up around the art business, I got to know the stereotypical artist…high maintenance, egocentric, a little nuts,” Greg said of the typical artists’mentality, “It is a priviledge to work with Tom, David and Scott, who don’t fit the artist mold. Each one is good people, down to earth and a delight to work with.”
For the 100th anniversary each piece was printed on 250 framedcanvas presentations graced with the 100th logo–all of which have sold out.Still they printed 1200 lithos of each creation in one size. They areall triple matted and framed with a 100th anniversary logos and onlyavailable through Segal or your local dealership.
Segal Fine Arts is now housed in a 60,000 square footbuilding in Louisville, Colorado. Doug Komhyr of Van Gogh Again Editions handles all of their printing and happens to be their only tennant. They are located under the looming ContinentalDivide between Boulder, Colorado and Denver. Five dogs and twoHarleys accompany the crew of 11 on a daily basis. While they makea living in one of the most beautiful areas of the country,it’s representing motorcycle art that makes a grown man cry, others wish forthe open road and women understand why we ride.

Scott worked closely with Willie G. on project: Willie selected allbikesfrom the archives. Each bike has special significance in H-D’shistory.Scott used 000 brush (pencil point size) resulting in over 400 hrs.time spent on actual brush to canvas.Prospective is that all tank logos and tops of engines exposed forhistorical accuracy.Scott’s most challenging work to date with detail so acute he even usedMetallic inks on some of the tanks for visual accents. This work is considered a major accomplishment in the Photo-RealisticStyle of fine art. Given the complexity of the detail of the bikes, this painting is the benchmark by which all other photo-realisticworks will be judged.(Note: Years of the bikes from earliest; 1905, 1915, 1921, 1933,1936, 1981, 2002.)
Depiction is from H-D’s archives; circa 1914. Scene shows first racebike, which had just won its maiden race. Important from thisstandpoint: Bike models that won races = bike models that sold well.Discussion around bike is by H-D execs and Press praising innovationsof bike and talking about how to improve capabilities.Difficulty from a technical standpoint: Lighting on an indoorpainting is crucial due to its refraction off the different objectsin the room. Painting from a poor quality black and white photopresents no keys to the artist as to gradations of shadows orintensity of light. Notice that a subtle light embraces each of thesubject’s expressions constituting the character of the painting. The best part: “SEPARATE FROM THE PACK”, the modern mantra ofToday’s rider can be traced back to 1914. Notice that every personis wearing a different style of hat; a commentary on individualism.
Tom’s palette is rich with color and imagination. Depiction is afather and son at a board-track race. Strength and determinationare the themes of this work.Lighting is key to the composition; Looking off into the sunset, feelthe warmth as it is absorbed by the central subjects. Tom usesshadow to accentuate the rays of sunshine gleaming from the bike. This is a painting that could easily be over-explained so we’llsummarize: Harleys, racing, lineage, patriotism, awesome painting, good job Tom!
Classic “Light and Shadow Painting”; main subjects (woman and bike)are enveloped in warm sunshine as the background serves more as asuggestion to the story. Colors dance in the shadows and disappearinto atmospheric shapes.Out for a ride on a splendid day, she stops by the post-office andpicks up the latest edition of ENTHUSIAST magazine. As she kicksback, the viewer is reminded of what it’s all about: Sunshine andHarley-Davidsons. The issue is circa 1953 so we are at the mid-pointof the centennial. As we begin to gravitate from the main subjects, the focus becomesthe diminutive gas attendant cowering next to the pump wondering whatto do now. Or maybe he’s just admiring her from afar; we are simplyleft to wonder. All good art is just a window to our imaginations.Masterpiece of epic proportions; enough said.
Bios on the artists:
TOM FRITZ
For those who are not familiar with this award-winning artist, it iseasily seen that he is extremely passionate about his work. Tom has aparticular style and brushstroke, which allows him to bring his subjects tolife. The way he integrates intense colors and soft lines makes his imagesjump off the canvas.
His work can be found in many private and corporate collections aroundthe world, including General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Pittsburgh Paintand Glass, and Petersen Publishing Company. In 1999, Fritz completed afour-painting commission for Harley-Davidson Motor Company, depicting theircolorful history. The finished works were published in the 1998 AnnualReport and were later reproduced as a highly successful limited-editionseries of prints.
Tom draws much of his inspiration from his family. He shares a home withwife Molly and their two children, daughter Emily and son Wesley. Withouttheir support and encouragement he could not jump on board the wild ridethat an artist’s life seems to dictate.
DAVID UHL
David Uhl is an artist’s artist. His technique, realistic with animpressionistic flair, breathes fantastic life into even the most ordinaryof subject matter. He is now among the select few officially licensed fineartists of Harley-Davidson Motor Company.
An avid rider since 1988, Uhl’s passion finally coincided with hisartistic talent. Upon viewing his work, Harley-Davidson allowed him intotheir guarded archives, to research vintage photos for his paintings.Captivated by Harley’s extraordinary history, he has set out to memorializethe legacy. David Uhl’s work reflects his ability to place himself into eraspast and capture the prevailing pioneer spirit witnessed throughout Harley’srich history. Some day we will all be saying “I knew him when…”
SCOTT JACOBS
Although Scott Jacobs drew pen-and-ink illustrations for his schoolnewspaper, he actually began his career in art by purchasing a failinggallery at the age of nineteen. At twenty-one, Scott opened Reflections onCanvas Gallery in Westfield, N.J., a gallery that he turned into a stellarsuccess. After receiving a set of paints from his wife for Christmas, Scottbecame passionate about painting. He now has a body of work that confirmsthe wisdom of that gift.
Scott merged his love of motorcycles with his tremendous abilities tobecome the first ever officially licensed Harley-Davidson artist. Scott’smotorcycle work as been featured in VQ Magazine, American Iron, Art BusinessNews, Easyriders Magazine, U.S. Art, Art World News, as well as a host ofother publications. Jacobs is one of todays most sought after artists andhis work sells throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.

ABATE OF FLORIDA ANNOUNCES FINANCIAL IMPACT OF HELMET LAW REPEAL On February 6, 2006 James ?Doc? Reichenbach II, President of ABATE of Florida and Chairman of the Board for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists, released the following economic impact report covering the five years since Florida modified their mandatory helmet law to exclude most adult riders.
278,331 new Motorcycles at an average of $10,000 each = $2,783,310,000
Sales tax on Motorcycles at 6% = $166,998,600
Registration Fees for Motorcycles = $10,047,749
Change of title = $8,280,347
Total = $2,968,636,696
?This is almost three billion dollars in five years that has been put into the economy of the State of Florida, and this is a low figure as it doesn?t include antique motorcycle or mopeds that are licensed in Florida,? said Doc. ?Over one hundred eighty million dollars went directly into the state treasury for the general fund, and this does not include the tourist money that has increased because of Florida being a freedom of choice state. In the past five years over Two Billion five hundred thousand dollars has been spent at Bike Week and Biketoberfest.?
For the report, the motorcycle registrations were compiled from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The tax and fees came from the Florida license and registration bureau. From July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005 motorcycle registrations in Florida went from 195,306 to 473,637 which represent a total of a 143% increase.
?I hope these figures will help anyone who has heard the bad publicity that has come out of our amended law,? said Doc.
VIRGINIA GOVERNOR WARNER CREATES MOTORCYCLE ADVISORY COUNCIL Virginia?s Governor Mark R. Warner has announced the creation of the Governor’s Motorcycle Advisory Council. The group, comprised of state and local officials, state agency representatives, and motorcycle enthusiasts, will work to promote motorcycle safety, tourism, and business development in Virginia. The Council is the next step in Governor Warner’s “Motorcycle VIRGINIA!” initiative created in 2004.
“Virginia has worked to expand its tourism markets in so many areas – and motorcycle tourism is a great opportunity for us,” said Governor Warner. Additionally, as the Commonwealth grapples with the transportation challenges of the next decade, motorcyclists need to have a voice in that debate.”
Council members are appointed by the Governor and include one member of the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia as well as a representative from various state agencies and from the Virginia’s sheriffs, police chiefs, and the Board of Transportation Safety and sixteen citizen members appointed by the Governor. The Secretaries of Commerce and Trade, Public Safety, and Transportation serve as ex officio members.
Governor Warner?s first appointee to the new council was J. Thomas McGrath as a representative of the Transportation Safety Board. McGrath is the founder of the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM), and is the Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney for Virginia.
The Governor’s Motorcycle Advisory Council will elevate the “Motorcycle Virginia” work group efforts that began in 2004. The group, comprised of state agencies involved in tourism, public safety, and transportation, has produced more than 50,000 “Watch for Motorcycles” bumpers tickers and launched a Web site featuring Virginia’s motorcycle routes, safety guidelines, and motorcycle resource links.

OKLAHOMA VETERANS NEEDED FOR MOTORCYCLE PLATES Veterans can now apply for special motorcycle license tags in Oklahoma. The proposal was signed into law Nov. 1, but according to the Oklahoma Tax Commission, which manages special license plate production, a minimum of 100 pre-applications are required by May 1st or the OTC won’t put them into production.
The proposal, which was part of the law signed by the Governor, states “anyone honorably discharged from any branch of the United States Military” is eligible to apply for these motorcycle tags, and the proceeds will go to help fund the 45th Infantry Division Museum, one of the finest Military Museums in the country, which has had its operating budget cut in half by the state.
?Here’s some cool information,? says Tiger Mike Revere, State Coordinator of ABATE of Oklahoma and member of the NCOM Board of Directors, ?The law actually mentions ABATE of Oklahoma in the verbiage!?
The OTC has contacted ABATE to design the new veteran?s license plate.
TEXAS POKER RUNS MAY MOVE TO MEXICO Texas has said no to charity poker runs, but at least one El Paso charity has an ace up their sleeve: Ju?rez.
Members of the Vista Hills Rotary Club, who had been trying to spice up their fund-raising with poker for years but couldn’t find a legal way to do it in El Paso, came up with the idea of having a Texas Hold ?Em Poker Tournament in Ju?rez, to be hosted by its sister club in Ju?rez, the Club Rotario Ju?rez Norte.
In Austin, Sputnik, state chairman of the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association, which organizes charity poker runs, found the idea brilliant. “Oh, yeah, that would work,” he said.
Charities around the country including churches, have been cashing in on the Texas Hold ‘Em craze without much controversy. But in Texas it’s a little trickier since Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott issued an opinion in December stating that poker runs — the popular fund-raisers in which bikers pay to pick up playing cards along a route to win prizes at the final stop — amounted to illegal gambling.
Sputnik, who also serves on the NCOM Board of Directors and Legislative Task Force, said he is looking for “a way around” the attorney general’s opinion. He has brought up the idea of switching from poker to throwing darts, which is considered to be a game of skill.
In El Paso, Mando Parra, a member of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club and the chairman of the West Texas Confederation of Clubs, is looking to take his poker ride for cancer research to New Mexico, where gambling is legal. In that case, the fund-raiser would have to benefit a New Mexico charity, he said. “The El Paso charities are the ones that are going to lose,” said Parra.
HELLS ANGELS WIN MILLION DOLLAR SETTLEMENT OVER RAID Santa Clara County has agreed to pay nearly $1 million to settle a lawsuit by the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club over a 1998 police raid that resulted in three dead dogs, a torn-up sidewalk and little meaningful evidence.
The $990,000 settlement was spurred by the U.S. Supreme Court’s rejection in December of the county’s argument that sheriff’s deputies were immune from liability. Lower court judges previously had said the actions of the deputies and San Jose police officers were unreasonable. They called unnecessary the ?truckloads? of evidence the officers obtained showing that some of the homes’ occupants belonged to the club, and said the officers did nothing to avoid killing the animals.
The raids by 90 officers on the club’s San Jose headquarters and nine homes on Jan. 21, 1998, followed the August 1997 killing of a man at a strip club and the subsequent arrest for murder of the bouncer who was a Hells Angels member. The member argued the killing was in self-defense, and a jury acquitted him and another defendant on all counts in 1999.
In building their case, prosecutors attempted to show that the suspect was part of a ?criminal street gang,? which could add three years to any sentence. To prove it, they obtained search warrants to gather any evidence that demonstrated membership in the Hells Angels, including anything that had names, slogans or symbols on it. None of the members whose homes were targeted had been charged in the case.
?In the course of seizing the evidence, they destroyed a lot of property, and they kept it for 18 months,” said Karen Snell, attorney for the Hells Angels, in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News.
In executing the search warrants, officers collected clothing, paperwork, clocks, sculptures, motorcycles, a mailbox, a piece of sidewalk on which members’ names had been written and even a refrigerator door that had a Hells Angels decal affixed to it. They needed to rent storage space to house it all.
Although they had a week to plan for the raids and knew of the existence of guard dogs, including a Rottweiler, the San Jose police officers failed to do anything to find a non-lethal way of incapacitating the animals, the courts said. They shot three of them.
The cities of Santa Clara and Gilroy, whose officers also were involved in the raids, settled their cases several years ago for a total of less than $50,000. No settlement has been reached with the San Jose Police Department, which also was sued.
NEWS OF THE WEIRD: BIKE VEST PROMOTERS FULL OF HOT AIR Promoters of supposedly ?Inflatable Motorcycle Vests? have been sentenced on 30 felony counts of securities fraud and grand theft, as well as five counts of tax evasion.
John Duhamell and Toni Duhamell were formally sentenced in late October in San Bernardino County Superior Court. After they entered guilty pleas on all counts, a San Bernardino Superior Court judge sentenced John Duhamell to seven years in state prison and Toni Duhamell to four years and four months in state prison. In addition, the Duhamells were ordered to repay their more than 200 victims $5.6 million in restitution, and they were also ordered to pay $816,718 each to the Franchise Tax Board on the tax evasion charges.
The Attorney General filed a criminal complaint in September, 2005 alleging that the Duhamells stole more than $5 million from investors over the course of three years on the pretense of financing a product known as the “AirVest” – a vest worn by motorcyclists that is designed to automatically inflate when they are thrown from their bikes.
The Duhamells falsely told potential investors that Harley-Davidson, Inc. had invested heavily in the company, which led more than 200 victims to believe their investment was secure.
Instead of putting the money into the company, the Duhamells used the investors’ cash to live an extravagant lifestyle that included trips to Europe as well as the purchase of luxury homes and automobiles.

IS IT FLORIDA BIKE WEEK– More and more people are referring to what has been known as Daytona Bike Week to Florida Bike Week. The reason for that is the number of people who are dis-satisfied with how they have been treated in Daytona Beach are looking at other places to stay and party in Florida.
The Orlando area is pulling very large numbers as is Miami and other places in South Florida. The good news for people who have to stay in Daytona because of business is that there should be plenty of rooms available and hopefully some lower prices.
More and more tourists are still opting to stay in the surrounding areas and going into Daytona and Daytona Beach for the things they want to see like the Harley Show and of course to visit Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona. That is going to be the BIG HIT of this year and where the action is going to be.
Meanwhile groups like the Latin American Bikers are opting for Orlando. I partied with some members of this organization in the past in Key West and had a very good time.–Rogue

BIKERNET ART LESSON–I thought you all might get a kick out of this. An artist named Mitch “MCOTIE” on one of the bike message boards took my rough sketch of S.O.G. and “painted” it on his computer in photoshop.
I’m currently learning this program so I can hopefully do this type of work. It’s how nearly all the comic books are done now. I can’t stop looking at it….it’s just amazing….

MAG WELCOMES A PILLAR ALERT–This is something that USDOT ought to look into. The awareness campaign has been the rider’s burden for a long time now and all the bumper stickers in the world haven’t changed it.
–Mike Greenwald
The latest from MAG, who are hoping that the Dept of Transport will do something to alert drivers of modern cars about the `A pillar’ blind spot in many vehicles;
The Motorcycle Action Group is delighted that the Department of Transport has finally recognized that the thickness of many modern cars’ “A” pillars poses a safety issue.
MAG has argued this point for years and resisted efforts to make bikers wear fluorescent clothing and burn headlights in daytime. MAG has long considered the conspicuity of the rider to be a “red herring” which distracts attention from the real causes of accidents.
The great missing factor in the whole SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You) debate is the possibility that the rider is not in the field of vision of the motorist who pulls out.
The solution to this problem lies largely with motorists taking more care and moving their heads to eliminate blind spots but also with manufacturers whose concern for car occupants has jeopardised the safety of more vulnerable road users.
MAG are campaigning for the regulations to be amended to take account of this problem.
MAG was heavily involved in the drafting of The Government’s Motorcycling Strategy which highlights the DfTs commitment to research on “A” pillar accidents.
MAG Director of Public Affairs Trevor Baird said, “MAG is delighted to find that a view we have long advanced is being taken seriously, we shall continue to campaign for changes to regulations to save riders’ lives.”

CRAZY TIMES IN BIKERDOM–The industry couldn’t be hotter. We haven’t sold this many motorcycles in 20 years. We’ve never been played on television like this before. Imagine that, bikers are celebs. A cool bike movie was just released, and if it does well, more will follow. More events are launched daily, more products, more magazines, and more motorcycle manufacturers. It’s nuts.
On the otherhand, we’ve got noise cops and the EPA leaning on us and we’re lacking a unified voice. But I’m confident that we’ll get to the bottom of it shortly. Watch our Bikernet Radio interviews for more info in the next week. During a sizzling burrito lunch today we came up with a plan regarding the noise police. We’ll ponder it over the weekend and maybe launch it in the news next week.
Enough of the serious shit. We’re headed to U.S. Choppers tomorrow to work on the Bonne Belle, 1940, 45 cubic inch chopper. Larry Settles of Settle Motorcycle Shop finished the machine work today. Tomorrow we should be able to bolt up the front end, make the final alignment checks and begin to make a roller out of that sucker, while Departure Bike Works in Richmond, VA turns that sluggish flathead into a hot rod. We’ll bring you a report next week.
In the meantime, it’s cold so find a good woman to keep you company, fire up the heater in your shop and get ready for the summer.
Ride Forever,

WE NEVER WANT TO LOSE– It must be primeval. The way it touches us so deeply, we must have some ancient hardwiring inside us that’s a direct feed to our very core. Maybe it’s some leftover evolutionary seventh sense that’s triggered when we hit the ignition and fire brings our V-twins to life. Or maybe the rhythmic rumble reminds us of some distant thundering herd. The chase is on. And our hearts automatically race not wanting to be left behind. Or our soul goes hungry.
Whatever else it is, this authentic part of the Harley-Davidson experience really is something. And it’s something we don’t ever want to lose.
Now comes the troubling part. How can the sound that embodies so much of what we love about Harley-Davidson? motorcycles be so offensive to others? And it’s even more troubling that those negative feelings are spreading throughout the country and around the world. Some people just don’t like motorcycles. Period. We can accept that. But isn’t there something we can do to keep their numbers from growing?
Negative news stories regarding motorcycle noise have increased 400 percent over the past 10 years. In the last year, communities across the United States have upped their efforts to curb motorcycle noise. Some communities have instituted outright bans on motorcycles. Even traditional motorcycle rally locations like Laconia, Daytona, and Myrtle Beach have had controversies regarding noise at their events this past year.
Worldwide, motorcycle noise is becoming more heavily restricted. Europe and Japan now require lower than U.S. dB(A) levels for new motorcycles right out of the box. In Australia, for example, a permanent label must be affixed and remain on to signify legal pipes. Annual inspections are also required.
Looking into the science of sound, the perception of sound varies according to multiple factors; volume is the single factor that most often sends hearing from barely noticeable to unbearable. Understandable. That’s why many riders are fitting themselves with earplugs for longer rides. But what’s really interesting is that the sound impulses we generate ourselves seem less of a nuisance than those generated by others. We’re also more indulgent when it comes to a “friendly” sound or noise – music, for example, if you happen to be a musician yourself. So, the “friendly” sounds of our Harleys are not so friendly sounding to those who don’t share our passion for riding. We can’t change that. But what can we do?
It seems that we, not just the Motor Company, not just the Harley-Davidson dealers, not just a handful of riders, we all, every Hog lovin’ one of us, must do everything we can to protect our sport and keep it as strong as it is today. We must take our turn, as more than a century-worth of Harley riders has before us, in guarding our sport.
In those very early days, Harley-Davidson was born as a form of basic transportation. When you added a sidecar or a delivery box to the back, they became utility vehicles. Then the weekend was invented. Well, you were lucky if you got one day off. But you made the most of it and discovered the sheer joy of motorcycling. And you discovered that there were others just like you who carried that dominant riding gene. You were born with it. And proud of it. You owned your own kind of freedom. But even then, there were many who didn’t understand.
There were literally hundreds of motorcycle manufacturers in the early days. Far more than there were automakers. As the number of motorized vehicles grew, so did the issue of noise. The confounded machines were upsetting the still-main-means-of-transportation horses. Farmers complained about machines disturbing their livestock. And the general population became very vocal about their right to a good night’s sleep. To achieve social acceptability of their new modes of transportation, the manufacturers developed ? the muffler! The auto industry had plenty of space to carry all manner of bulky noise suppression devices. For motorcycles, it was an entirely different challenge. The Motor Company put its engineering staff to work and came up with the best mufflers in the motorcycle industry. So successful, in fact, that they built a motorcycle that became affectionately known as The Silent Gray Fellow. That moniker stuck, and during those early years the entire Harley-Davidson model line became known as The Silent Gray Fellows.
Today, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have more power and performance than our predecessors could have ever imagined, but with all due respect, we love to hear them coming. That doesn’t mean louder noise equals even more power, however. It’s an interesting misconception. Testing has proven that straight pipes do not necessarily outperform pipes with lower noise levels. Pick the wrong pipes and you can severely reduce your horsepower and/or your torque. And while you’re doing it, you’ll awaken the sleeping giant of social concern that lives next door to all of us.
So what if you’ve picked the wrong pipes?
Then you have a very important individual decision to make. We all do. No one expects everyone to change out their straight pipes overnight. But we all must consider changing out our thinking. We need to think about the consequences our actions have on others, before others take action against us. As tempting as it is, maybe we resist cranking up the revs at the next stop signal. Maybe we fall in love all over again with the unique and mesmerizing sound “quality” of our own V-twin, not just the volume. Maybe we think about how we can assure that all those riders coming behind us can enjoy the same level of freedom we do today. Maybe we just take a time-out to remember that this is really something. And it’s something we never want to lose.

I’m not giving up just yet. I read an article in HOT BIKE recently that also cried wolf. I spoke to Ronnie Powell who wrote this article and we’re working on another one based on three major principals: There’s noise everywhere, constant noise. By comparison, how much noise comes from Motorcycles? Very little. Motorcycles are extremely fragile vehicles compared to everything else on the road. How can we protect ourselves from motorists? We only have sight and sound. Our sound may be vital to our survival.
Finally, much of the public outcry is based on the same principal as second hand smoke. We need to research this from two levels. Is second hand noise that harmful and how much of that harm comes from bikes? Secondly, It may be time to point out that second hand motorists kill bikers everyday. Over 70 percent of all motorcycle accidents are the fault of motorists. I believe we have the right to defend ourselves, and if making noise helps-stand back. The research is underway.–Bandit

TEXAN PATENTS FLYING MOTORCYCLE– How much time do you spend stuck in traffic on your way home from work? There may be a solution – flying to work.A North Texas man has patented a flying motorcycle. The transportation breakthrough comes from a small aeronautics lab near Bridgeport. It’s called the Sky Cycle.
The top half, is something like a helicopter. The bottom half, a three-wheeled motorcycle, which is able to leap stacked traffic in a single bound.
Larry Neal calls this a fly drive vehicle.”It is easy to fly. I can fly it hands off. I can leave the ground and put my arms out like this. It’s autostable,” he says.
An unpowered rotor on top creates enough lift for it to fly. A propeller on the back pushes it through the air. It takes off quickly and can fly as fast as 70 miles an hour in complete safety, Neal says.
“I can shut the engine off at 500 feet and come down in total control slower than a parachute,” he adds.
But that’s only half the story.Back on the ground, the rotor folds up. And the vehicle becomes a motorcycle, with a range of about 300 miles.Neal has patented all of this and says the Sky Cycle will go on sale in a couple of months for $25,000, assembly required.
Neal’s company, Butterfly LLC, has other models in the prototype stage. All are designed to fit through a seven foot garage door. He says it won’t be long before that beep you hear on the highway could be coming from above as well as behind.

She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded, “Rome? Why would anyone want to go Rome? It’s crowded and dirty and worse yet, full of Italians. You’re crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you getting there”? “We’re flying on Continental,” was the reply. “We got a great rate!” “Continental,” exclaimed the hairdresser. “That’s a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly and they’re always late. So, where are you staying in Rome”? “We’ll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome’s left side called Trieste…” “Don’t go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks its gonna be something special and exclusive. But it’s really a dump. The worst hotel in the whole city! The rooms are small, the service is surly and they’re way overpriced. So, whatcha doing when you get there?” “We’re going to go to see the Vatican and we hope to see the Pope.” “That’s rich,” laughed the hairdresser. “You and a million other people trying to see him. He’ll look the size of an ant. Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You’re sure going to need it.” A month later, the woman, all smiling, came in for her hair appointment. The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome. “It was absolutely wonderful,” explained the woman. “Not only did we arrive on time in one of Continental’s brand new jets, but it was overbooked and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful and I had a handsome 28-year-old steward who waited on me hand and foot.” “And the hotel. It was fabulous! They’d just finished a $5 million remodeling job and now it’s just a jewel, the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us their owner’s suite at no extra charge!” “Well,” muttered the hairdresser. “I know you didn’t get to see the Pope.” “Actually, we were quite lucky. As we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder and explained that the Pope likes to personally meet some of the visitors and if I’d be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me. Sure enough, five minutes later, the Holy Father walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me.” “Really,” asked the hairdresser. “What’d he say?” He said, “Where did you get that horrible haircut?” –from CarlR Continued On Page 3

Hey, It’s cold in the shop today. My dinky desk heater is blowing flames under my chair. It’s downright strange for Los Angeles to dip below 40 degrees. Ah, but the news is sizzling this week. We’re about to launch The Girls of Bikernet in Bandit’s Cantina. Curt Lout, Ken Conte and Becky are responsible for the first feature. Any day now.
I’m sensitive about the EPA subject, because debates are heating up. EPA issues are flying between the MIC (Motorcycle Industry Council) and the MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation) and I’d like the best minds to get together on this. Our Bikernet Radio is planning to interview Hardtail from the MRF in the next couple of days. We will make the same offer to Brett Smith, the President of S&S. As far as I’m concerned, this is not about right and wrong, or who got on base first. It’s all about saving this lifestyle and our industry. There’s currently three industry interviews in the Bikernet Radio department, with many more to come.
Let’s hit the news then I’ll touch on our Bonneville effort:
NEW ELLIPSE HAND AND FOOT CONTROLS FROM CYRIL HUZE– Ellipse hand & foot controls are very stylish with very fluid lines. Hand controls available with cable or hydraulic clutch master cylinder. Optional 2 or 3 button switch housing to choose for each side.

PERFECT BREASTS– A guy walking down the street sees a woman with perfect breasts. Hesays to her, “Hey miss, would you let me bite your breasts for $100dollars?
“Are you nuts? !!” she replies, and keeps walking away. He turnsaround, runs around the block and gets to the corner before she does.
“Would you let me bite your breasts for $1,000 dollars?” he asks again.
“Listen you; I’m not that kind of woman! Got it?” So the guy runsaround the next block and faces her again. “Would you let me bite yourbreasts just once for $10,000 dollars?”
She thinks about it for a while and says, “Hmmm, $10,000 dollars, eh?Ok, just once, but not here. Let’s go to that dark alley over there.”
So they go into the alley, where she takes off her blouse to revealthe most perfect breasts in the world. As soon as he sees them, hegrabs them and starts caressing them, fondling them slowly, kissingthem, licking them, burying his face in them, but not biting them.
The woman finally gets annoyed and asks, “Well? Are you gonna bitethem or not?”
“Nah”, he replies. “Costs too much…”

WHAT’S THE DEAL ABOUT BOOBS THIS WEEK?–Everyone loves a healthy breast right? The Breast Cancer site ishaving trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meettheir quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to anunderprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their siteand click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle).
This doesn’t cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisersuse the number of daily visits to donate a mammogram in exchange foradvertising.

THE DEVIL DELIVERS– Hope all is well out there, I am in early this morning to get a jump on the weekbut I figured I’d take the time to pass this on. Holly and I enjoyed the Worlds Fastest Indianyesterday, and then had dinner with a friend on the way to deliver Lucky Devil model 001 after some additionalmolesting. I trimmed up the clutch cover and fabricated a custom devil tail from raw aluminumand polished it myself, not quite as nice as Bradley but I think even he would let it go.

SPEEDO TECH QUESTION–I have a ’69 shovelhead that I’ve owned since ’72. I rebuilding the whole bike for the second time, engine lower end for the fourth time, tranny’s first time… Yes, it held together that long, tough bastard. I have a 5-INCH speedo on my tank that is cable driven off the transmission. I want to upgrade to an Auto Meter electronic speedometer. I’ve seen a sensor from Dakota Digital that screws into your cable then plugs into the back of your…I guess…Dakota digital speedometer. Would this setup work on an Auto Meter electronic speedo? How would I go about wiring it.

The annual V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati once again played host to Easyriders magazine’s Industry Leaders awards–The event hosted by Dave Nichols, Easyriders’ editor-in-chief, celebrates the newest and most innovative product of the past year as well as honoring those people who have made a difference to the motorcycle industry.
A newly created award for 2006 was the Production Bobber of the Year, introduced in response to the growing number of Bobbers now available. Dave Nichols said of the new category: “The nice thing about being the editor-in-chief of the magazine that sponsors the awards is that I and my fellow editors can create a new award if we like something.”
When Alan Hurd of Victory took to the stage to accept the award for ‘Cruiser of the Year’ he explained the origins of the bike’s name. “When we started the project we called it the motorcycle. This soon became shortened to the MC and after that it was a short step to become MC Hammer. The name ‘Hammer’ just stuck.”
The highlight of the evening and the final award was the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Bob Illingworth. Bob received a standing ovation upon his acceptance of the award, given to him in recognition of his work for riders’ rights, the development of the Sturgis motorcycle museum and his ongoing work with the Kids and Chrome Project.

MY GOD, THE FIRST POPE JOKE OF THE YEAR–After getting all of Pope Benedict’s luggage loaded into the limo, (and he doesn’t travel light), the driver notices that the Popeis still standing on the curb. “Excuse me, Your Holiness,” says the driver, “Would you please take your seat so we can leave?”
“Well, to tell you the truth,” says the Pope, “they never let me drive at the Vatican when I was a cardinal, and I’d really like to drive today.”
“I’m sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I’d lose my job! And what if something should happen?” protests the driver, wishing he’d never gone to work that morning.
“Who’s going to tell? Besides, there might be something extra in it for you,” says the Pope with a smile.
Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decisionwhen, after exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 105 mph. (Remember, he’s a German Pope.)
“Please slow down, Your Holiness!” pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens.
“Oh, dear God, I’m gonna lose my license — and my job!” moans the driver. The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio.
“I need to talk to the Chief,” he says to the dispatcher.
The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he’s stopped a limo going a hundred and five.
“So bust him,” says the Chief.
“I don’t think we want to do that, he’s really important,” said the cop.
The Chief exclaimed, “All the more reason!”
“No, I mean really important,” said the cop with a bit of persistence.
The Chief then asked, “Who ya got there, the Mayor?”
Cop: “Bigger.”
Chief: “The Governor?”
Cop: “Bigger.”
Chief: “The President?”
Cop: “Bigger.”
“Well,” said the Chief, “Who is it?”
Cop: “I think it’s God!”
The Chief is even more puzzled and curious, “What makes you think it’s God?”
Cop: “He’s got the Pope as a chauffeur.”

February 2006 V-Twin Expo
By Bandit |
Editor’s note: The following was well written by John Siebenthaler, who previously designed Bikernet billboards, ads and brochures. He’s a master designer, like Dave Perewitz is a master bike builder. Rogue, on the otherhand was sent first class to shoot all the latest V-Twin industry products, the player and bikes. Unfortunately he never left the bar except once to attend the V-Twin party. Hang on.
(CINCINNATI) Ahhh, to be in balmy Cincy in February. Picnickers line the banks as the Ohio River flows lazily downstream. Flocks of flamingos shuffle along the shore, effortlessly searching for brine shrimp and krill. Flawlessly tanned young women in t-backs seek out a not-to-secluded spot to toss down a towel on the sand, unhook their tops, and get serious about sunning. It’s… oh wait, that’s not THIS Cincinnati.
No, my plane left Tampa at 7:30 a.m., fresh into the second half of a day-long monster thunderstorm, and the roller coaster ride into the Ohio valley meant anyone who’d embraced that hearty Denny’s pre-dawn corned-beef-hash- and-eggs-over-easy-breakfast was that much lighter on landing.
All this talk about the weather is framed by the experience of having just attended the Performance Racing Industry (sorry, no photos allowed, but boy, you shoulda been there) show in Orlando last November. Over a million square feet of exhibits, five miles of aisles, and chamber of commerce blue skies and fair temps left the tens of thousands attending wishing for a few more days in the Orange County Convention Center.
Nevertheless, the ride in from Covington, through intermittent rain tinged with sleet, was in many ways preferable to 04-degrees, way sub-zero temps-and-frozen- beer-and-bar-nuts-puke left in the drifts outside the hotels. It’s just what is, and the weather did little to dampen the larger-every-year herd of manufacturers elbowing their way onto and above the main floor of the Cinergy Center to exhibit the latest and greatest in V-twin merchandise and technology.
And yes, the fat lady’s sung her last note. This IS the show for American Other, a phrase first coined by IronWorks Dennis Stemp years ago that did then and still perfectly describes the offerings. That category has also been typified as anything billet, which in practical terms defaults to polished aluminum, from primaries to master cylinders.
Interestingly, though there’s never been a shortage of finishes, keeping the part in a chrome-like state of finish hasn’t been that easy. Enkay Polishing enters the fray with a consumer line of polishing kits for shop and garage that help make the chore of maintaining a factory fresh appearance a little easier.
Interesting also were the exhibitors who in the past shunned the lifestyle atmosphere of V-Twin, but who’ve since realized that if you want to sell American v-twin, you go where the buyers are. It was, in terms of variety and depth, a show that just keeps getting better. Every aisle was filled with acquaintances, and the rule of thumb was to walk ten feet, talk ten minutes, repeat, especially true for pals from my Easyriders days.
Others worth noting included Berry Wardlaw's Accurate Engineering over the top engine shop. Berry’s getting set up for in-house EPA certification, so anyone who’s ever imagined one of his trademark retro builds sitting in their frame in their driveway will have ample opportunity to indulge. And speaking of, there were several frame manufacturers noted whose quality construction was self-evident and in stark contrast to a lot of the just plain dangerous junk that’s floating around.
As to dealer attendance, that was hard to judge. Just about every booth, queried on the subject, said they’d run out or were running short on promo materials, so someone was picking up collateral. On the otherhand, marketing materials in general seemed to be less plentiful than in previous years. The floor, for the most part, was generally free of congestion, which meant a very easy time getting around.
The return ride to the airport was in the company of a couple of northeastern shop owners, both of whom gave a big thumbs up to the show, said they’d found a lot of merchandise they liked, but no, hadn’t bought. They were contemplating a few items of interest and might buy once they’d done the math.
Noted for a special shout out were the booth contents of Cadworks and SpieglerUSA. Their respective products feature sheet metal and hydraulics, but all things are not created equal. Cadworks is a Southern California engineering firm whose clients come mainly from the aerospace and aircraft industry, but whose technology is perfectly adaptable to the power sports industry.
Cadworks designs body parts (tanks and fenders) for production by deep drawn forming. They’re able to render in meticulous detail compound shapes (steel and aluminum) that are formed in a consistent, predictable manner, maintaining a uniform thickness and without introducing stress.
You can learn more on their web site, but I was impressed with how economical the process is and how repeatable the parts are once the initial engineering and molds are finalized. Cost to manufacture is very low, without sacrificing quality. Oh, and the fact that it’s all done in the USA gets major snaps as well.
Think all fittings are created equal? Guess again. Spiegler is one of those companies that revives your faith in mankind. Just when it seems as though the Chinese outsourcing stampede was complete, here sits a perfect example of European obsession with detail in a form following patented brake line function. And since the form is brake lines, the function part proves there’s always a better mousetrap.
If you’ve ever been ready to ditch the braided and bend your own steel lines because you couldn’t get the python-esque kinks out of the hose, here’s your answer:
A nifty little piece of plastic bar, and an even more cool two-piece clamp for a bench vise or vise-grip, and you can now set the angle of the banjo fitting quickly and easily, resulting in a straight line vinyl covered braided line that doesn’t look like a boa constrictor sucking down it’s last meal.
Danny Gray’s booth got a big thumbs-up from everyone for Best Booth In Show. Billy Lane was there, posse in hand, for meet and greets that left his corner of the spectacle looking like I-75 through rush hour Atlanta. A couple of aisles over was Roger Goldammer's booth, more restrained, smaller, less glitz and glam, yet arguably setting a fresh new standard for innovation and execution when it comes down to rubber on the road.
Yet another symptom of change that’s becoming more and more prevalent: TV coverage. Specifically, were jammed in every other booth, doing a standup for later edit and broadcast on the growing number of outlets that are trying to win a v-twin market.
Trade shows. Not always easy to attend, not always situated in the venues we might otherwise select as best for us, but still the best way to quickly come to terms with what’s new, who’s moved, how’s business, and in general what’s shakin'.
And that’s not counting all the great ways to get your hands on actual product, to pick up, turn over, sit on, kick, or otherwise get physical feedback about something you hadn’t realized had changed or something brand new on the scene.
Come to think of it, it sure beats wallowing in a stuck in traffic crowd on Main Street that just cant wait to drop five bucks on a warm beer in a plastic cup.

BMC CHOPPERS AND DICKIES HAVE TEAMED UP TO GIVE AWAY THE FORD TRUCK AND THE BMC CHOPPER TO THE DICKIES WORKMAN OF THE YEAR…..GO TO BMC CHOPPERS.COM CHECK OUT THE NEWS FOR DETAILS—Big Mike keeps the Bikernet staff appraised of his developments from shop expansions, to new rigs, bike articles and additions to his home. If you’re a fan, this guy is on the move. He’s going to bring a bike to theBikernet headquarters in the near future for a road test. He tried to make the run to Wilmington a couple of weeks ago and sold all his bikes on the way out.
NEW BIKERNET FORUM TIPS–Even Bandit is going through a learning curve with the new Bikernet Your Shot Forum.I would explain to them that the red font is THE thing to click on to get into the subject areas. Then explain to Bikernet readers how you can click on anyone of the links in the thing to return to that level (I’m still struggling with how to explain that to a partially-tech-savvy person myself). I’d also tell them how to reply by hitting “Post Reply” at the top or bottom of the screen. It took me a few minutes to figure that out. I kept hitting the name of the contributor and going to their profile.
One thing I’d really drill into them is how to register, and to make it clear that registering for the forum doesn’t cost anything (that’s good for cheap bastards like me). I’m guessing that some people haven’t contributed because “registering” always feels like someone is going to take money from you.
Check out Stroker’s description of how to upload pictures in the “Replacing Your Shot” section. He did a good job. You could put a link just below the red “Bikernet Forum Forum Index” that says, “How to use this forum, goddamit!” Then get Stroker or someone to put together a roadmap (instructions).
Overall, this new format takes a little getting used to, but it’s really, really good.I especially like the notification in email that tells you someone has written something.

BUELL FRONT END TECH–So I’m in the middle of rebuilding my Sportster, (’87, 883 that’s now a Buell 1203), and I’m going with this whole tricked out race drag bike scheme. I really want to use a Buell front end, if you could tell me a little about how you went about getting one that would rock. I don’t need the crazy cool triple trees, stock ones would be fine. I was just wondering if you can use a stock Buell front end on a Sportster.

The neck stem uses a different bearing, but that’s all I’m aware of. The diameter of the stem is the difference. I just used the Buell bearings and races if he’s using the Buell neck stem. That should bolt up. The only other thing I can think of, and don’t know about, is the height of the neck. Is the Buell neck stem going to work length wise? If it does I don’t see any problems. I’ve seen several rigids built using the Buell trees so it should work. He could contact the guys at nasty bikes. They do this a lot.
Hope that helps.

Up to 60 tribes use Bear Butte for prayer and fasting.Indians became upset last year when a Sturgis bar owner announced that he planned to build a bar and concert area near Bear Butte, catering to crowds that come for the annual motorcycle rally. A buffer zone should be established between Bear Butte and bars, said Rep. Paul Valandra, D-Mission, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. A rowdy bar near the National Historic Landmark could produce a “carnival-like atmosphere” that would disrupt religious practices, Valandra said. However, the committee decided HB1233 would overstep constitutional bounds by violating private property rights.”(The bill) runs against the grain of everything that we believe in this country with regards to property rights,” said Rep. Gordon Howie, R-Rapid City.Rep. Alan Hanks, R-Rapid City said lawmakers are not insensitive to the religious beliefs of Indians. “We want to make sure that Bear Butte is retained and revered for those that want to practice their religion,” he said. “The bill is just way overreaching.”Rep. Bill Thompson, D-Sioux Falls, urged his colleagues to pass the bill. “Don’t disregard the important issue of sacredness,” he said.Rep. David Sigdestad, D-Pierpont, said he did not believe that a ban on liquor licenses in the area would infringe on property rights. Rod Woodruff, owner of the Buffalo Chip Campground near Sturgis, opposed the bill. Establishing a buffer zone around Bear Butte would show a state preference to a religion, and that is not allowed by the state constitution, he said.Jane Murphy, a landowner near Bear Butte, said she hiked up the mountain three times last summer. HB1233 would help maintain the aesthetic beauty in that area of the Black Hills, she said. “Bear Butte is a treasure to the Lakota people. It’s a treasure to all of us South Dakotans who live nearby,” she said. FOUR CORNERS RUN PLANS–Got Cabin Fever? Got the Winter Blues? Well, winter is getting close to being over, and with spring around the corner a lot of bikers are making arrangements for trips to rallies across the US. The Four Corners Rally in the Rockies started pre-rally ticket sales the first of the year and we are running two times above what we sold last year. Besides that, bikers from 16 different states have already bought tickets and camp spots. What causes so many to order early and from so far away? Why come to the Four Corners, Durango and Ignacio Colorado area for a motorcycle rally? Several reasons come to mind: 1: Best riding anywhere in the US. Just make one trip from Durango to Silverton and you will be hooked. We know gas is high and we know you have a lot of rally choices, so why not come to the one that gives you the most bang for your buck?! MILWAUKEE (February 3, 2006) – Harley-Davidson has announced that Kenny Coolbeth Jr. will join its Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts racing team as it competes for the 2006 AMA Flat Track Championship. Coolbeth, of New Milford, Conn., will join veteran Rich King on the two-rider Screamin’ Eagle team. Coolbeth, age 28, has been racing professionally on the AMA Grand National flat track series since 1993. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1994, and has finished in the top-ten in season points for six consecutive seasons. Racing for the Mid-America Harley-Davidson team, he finished second in the AMA Flat Track Championship in 2005. He earned six podium results and won races at Lake Odessa, Mich., and Farley, Iowa. During one stretch of the season Coolbeth placed on the podium in five consecutive events. “This is a dream come true for me,” said Coolbeth. “I’ve wanted to race for the Harley-Davidson factory team since I was a kid.” Returning for his seventh season with the Screamin’ Eagle squad, Rich King, age 42, brings 26 years of professional experience to the track. King placed sixth in season points in 2005, with a win on the Springfield Mile and five other podium finishes. CUSTOM PAINTING IN ORLANDO MUSEUM–Witness Custom Motorcycle Painting by Mongo Tom to Complement the Orlando Museum of Art’s ExhibitionThe Art of the Motorcycle Saturday, February 11, 2006 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP III HEADS TO THE BADLANDS– AMD is taking its third annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building to Sturgis for 2006. Often regarded as the spiritual home of the custom bike lifestyle, we have always seen the Official World Championship as an important way to add value to existing industry events. As was seen at Las Vegas in November the HUGE investment in time, effort and hard cash that the custom v-twin builder community is making in competing at the world’s most prestigious bike show represents a staggering sum of money and a major logistical exercise by often quite small businesses. Therefore the decision to hold the show during Sturgis allows us to repay the enthusiasm of the competitor community by staging the World Championship at an event that many competitors will be attending anyway. Initially this is a one-year 2006-only announcement. However subject to the outcome of current discussions with a number of other organizations (we still believe in collaboration rather than self aggrandizement!). We hope to be in a position to confirm long-term venue and date plans for the Official World Championship within the next few months. Meanwhile confirmed details of dates and location (classes, prizes and all other details) for 2006 will be e-mailed to you, posted on the event website http://www.amdproshow.com … check out the forums) and published in AMD soon. We are presently working on the next European Championship (being held at the end of March in Germany) so plan to have all final details for the 2006 Official World Championship at Sturgis in early August finalized shortly thereafter. All enquiries to Neil ‘ShowMaster’ Blaber at neil@amdproshow.com I DON’T BELIEVE IT–The news is wrapped. I usually don’t drink whiskey until it’s finished, but today it was dragging me down. News kept pouring in from all parts of the globe. We were struggling to keep up. The girls were screaming, dogs barking and cats screeching. We made it, though. Tomorrow we’re headed out to U.S. Choppers to check the Bonne Belle, 45 frame and see how our Sportster 39 mm front end will fit. The other day we tinkered with one of our Kendon Lifts. It’s light and agile, but lacked proper tool holders and I discovered that I had two Handy extentions I never used. They were tucked under a bench collecting dust. I decided to weld them in place, but there was another element of these lifts that needed help. Don’t get me wrong, they make side panels out of stainless and I have a set for our other Kendon lift. I’m going to flip them to prevent tools from slipping off. The other element involves the anchors for the tie-down straps. They move as the bike is lifted (loosen) and tighten as the bike is lowered. It’s easy to have a bike drop quickly preventing time to loosen the straps. We had one strap snap and the other try to yank my grandson’s bike off the lift. So we welded a short chunk of tubing to the front of the lift frame for a permanent and improved strapping angle (to the front). Then I ran a wider bar through that tube, anchored it in place with washers and cotter keys and used the original strap loops off the lift, with set screws brazed to the shields, to hold it firmly in place. We’re road testing it right now. Whatta ya tink? Coming up on Bikernet we have an Exile feature, a bobbed Triumph that the HORSE staff lost, a Rocky seat tech, Paul Garson’s article on Custom Controls, the hottest handlebars in the industry, a Hawaiian bike shop opening, Tom Foster’s hot rod FXR with Nikki shot by Peter Linney, and finally Larry Curik’s (Lone Star Choppers) exhaust heat wrap tech. Plus I have several fiction pieces from UD that I’ve failed to read. Maybe I’ll look at one now. Oh shit, we may launch an Aeromach tech on touring highway pegs today. I need to test them this week. All that and more will splash onto Bikernet, plus the first Girls of Bikernet feature next week in the Cantina. Hang on. In the meantime have a helluva weekend. What the hell, you worked hard all week, take Friday off. But don’t forget to come back to Bikernet. Ride forever, –Bandit

S&S CYCLE NAMES MOBIL 1 THE OFFICIAL MOTOR OIL OF ITS PROVEN PERFORMANCE ENGINES AND THE CUSTOMER SUPPORT CENTER–S&S Cycle announced it has named Mobil 1 motorcycle oil as the official oil for S&S Proven Performance engines and the Customer Support Center, which houses the S&S Dealer Training & Certification Facility, in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
“We are very excited to team up with ExxonMobil to endorse the Mobil 1 brand,” said S&S president Brett Smith .”Like the other strategic relationships we have, it’s very important for us to endorse only the best and we know that this relationship with Mobil 1 is definitely going to be positive for our industry. We’ve used Mobil 1 for many years and now an official endorsement is very fitting for both companies. Using Mobil 1 at our Customer Support Center, which houses the Dealer Training & Certification Center, is another important step as we continue to grow and expand our operations and commitment to the industry.”
S&S and ExxonMobil are collaborating to bring Mobil 1 to the V-Twin market through a variety of distribution channels. OEMs doing business with S&S will be able to purchase Mobil 1 drum product directly from Mobil 1. Secondly, authorized S&S Dealers will have the opportunity to participate in a the S&S/Mobil 1 National Account Program, allowing them to purchase and have Mobil 1 cased goods and drum product delivered directly to their shop if minimum orders are met. And third, S&S will be stocking Mobil 1 cased goods for distribution to dealers who are unable to meet minimum requirements to participate in the National Account Program.
Delivery of cased goods is scheduled to begin in March 2006. Delivery of Mobil 1 in drums will depend on the market areas that show the greatest need. Both S&S and ExxonMobil will be working directly with OEMs to establish distribution as quickly as possible.
THE ULTIMATE SUPERBOWL FAN–A man receives a free ticket to the Super Bowl from his company.Unfortunately, when he arrives at the stadium he realizes theseat is in the last row in the corner of the stadium. He is closer to the Goodyear Blimp than the field.
About halfway through the first quarter he notices an empty seat10 rows off the field right on the 50-yard line. He decides totake a chance and makes his way through the stadium and aroundthe security guards to the empty seat. As he sits down, he asksthe gentleman sitting next to him, “Excuse me, is anyone sittinghere?” The man replies no.
Now, very excited to be in such a great seat for the game,he again inquires of the man next to him, “This is incredible!”Who in their right mind would have a seat like this at theSuper Bowl and not use it?”
The man replies, “Well, actually, the seat belongs to me.I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we haven’t been together at since wegot married in 1967.”
“Well, that’s terribly sad. But still, couldn’t you findsomeone to take the seat? A relative or close friend?”
“No,” the man replied, “they’re all at the funeral.”

BIKERNET EMPLOYEE COMPLAINT–For a couple years I’ve been blaming it on lack of sleep, not enough sunshine, too much pressure from my job, earwax buildup, poor blood or anything else I could think of.
But now I found out the real reason: I’m tired because I’m overworked.
Here’s why:
The population of this country is 273 million.
140 million are retired.
That leaves 133 million to do the work.
There are 85 million in school.
Which leaves 48 million to do the work.
Of this there are 29 million employed by the federal government.
Leaving 19 million to do the work.
2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden.
Which leaves 16.2 million to do the work.
Take from that total the 14.8 million people who work for state and city governments.
And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.
At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals.
Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.
That leaves just two people to do the work.
You and me.
And there you are sitting on your ass, at your computer, reading jokes.
Nice. Real nice.

GROUNDHOG DAY AT STEALTH SHOP–Well it was “Groundhog’s Day”! The way the weather has been around here I don’t think it makes a difference one way or another if he sees his shadow! It continues to be spring like in the Charlotte area.
I am sure by now most of you have seen the new “Your Shot” section. Personally I like the old “Your Shot” better, just my opinion. The new “Your Shot” gives me a headache. I guess I will catch on sooner or later?
Here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS we are concentrating on our two Shovel head projects. This past week we had an exhaust system designed by the guys at Alternative Machine. They did a great job! I think they are wicked looking.
Usually this time of year we start planning the Annual Run For Breath. After much thought and debate between “The Meanest” and myself, have decided to put the RFB on the shelf for this year. This was not an easy decision to reach. A lot of thought went into this decision. Last year it became apparent that the interest in the RFB had slowed. There were meetings where only one or two people would show up. The number of sponsors dropped and it became harder to obtain sponsors. The day of the RFB we had volunteers not show up and we were forced to scramble to find replacements at the last minute.
When you commit to doing something you don’t call in sick because your nose is running! The number of riders who signed up was down as was the number of bike show entrants.
As for the bike show, as with any bike show, there were complaints each year concerning judging. Each year we added new judges, but each year we heard the complaints. Personally I grew tired of hearing them.
Each year when the RFB was over we would hear “You know next year you should do this,” and my response would be “You know we start the RFB meetings in January, see you there.” How many of those people do you think ever showed up? You got it, NONE!
As with riding bikes, you find real quick who the posers are. Also The American Lung’s Association involvement with the RFB declined each year. The number of hours planning an event like this really add up quick and with trying to run SBW and trying to get it to really take off, I feel I need to focus my time there. We would like to thank everyone at Bikernet for all their support in the past along with all who supported the RFB in one form or another.
This summer we will have a private ride with friends to remember Justin. One of the best things to come from the RFB besides helping the kids was the friends we met and made through the run. The RFB over the years raised over $60,000.00, a great accomplishment. The RFB helped me personally deal with the worst tragedy any parent can experience, losing a child. “The Meanest” and I put our hearts and souls into the RFB and for me the RFB will always live on in my heart. We end the RFB not being sad but proud of what we did and how many we helped. I know we made Justin proud! It is time to turn the page and move on.
In closing I would just like to leave you with this; “IN Memory of Justin”It is not the begining or the end,but all the in-betweens!
Don’t forget to live all “The In-Betweens!”
Until next week, RIDE!

ELLIS DIPS INTO THE SIXES ON G2 BUELL– G2 Motorsports debuted its new S&S Cycle powered Buell, nicknamed Thunder, on Tuesday and Wednesday at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta, Ga., with spectacular results. Chip Ellis took the machine to a 7.00 on the motorcycle’s maiden voyage and followed that with a stunning 6.98-second pass in just it’s second run down the dragstrip. Ellis made one more run at 7.00 seconds as the team declared the test session a success and loaded up to head down to Gainesville to teach the Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School.
Matt Smith, aboard the S&S powered Buell that G2 debuted at last year’s U.S. Nationals, ran a best of 7.05 seconds. Smith running the motorcycle the team named Super Tramp, said he will be making an announcement of a major sponsor very soon that will allow him to run the entire NHRA POWERade Series.
INNER CIRCLE BIKER RADIO–It’s biker radio, and it will soon be available for bikers around the globe – via the World Wide Web.
“Bikers: The Inner Circle,” a one-hour radio show that will feature interviews with real bikers from all walks of life throughout the nation, as well as a little bit of road music, will premiere on Saturday, Feb. 11. Produced by Charlie Brechtel, of the famed Charlie Brechtel Band that is most well known around this area for their Rally performances at the Buffalo Chip Campground, the show promises to be a wealth of information about motorcycle issues, and biker features.
From interviews with old-time custom bike builder Ron (Grott) Grottinelli, the owner of the Hog Farm in New York who fought Harley-Davidson Corporation in court when the company tried to strong-arm him into losing his HOG name that he had since 1969, to talking with Sturgis Mayor Mark Zeigler about the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, east coast correspondent Cliff (Beeb) Bouquin said there will be a wide variety of topics covered on the show.
“It’s not polished in any way,” said East Coast correspondent Cliff (Beeb) Bouquin. “We want to interview people like Grott. Real biker builders – people who aren’t on TV. People who have been doing it long before the people on TV, and bring their story to the real bikers. We also want to do some interviews with different motorcycle clubs because a lot of bikers are interested in that stuff.”
Music, Beeb said, will also be a big part of the show, though not in the conventional way. Rather than bringing big name groups to the bikers the show will seek to play material from such bands as Carolyn Wonderland and Ross and Rotten, whom bikers may know from their experiences at the Buffalo Chip Campground. In fact, Beeb said though the Internet radio show will be based out of California where it is produced by Brechtel’s Big 7 Productions, the whole thing came together from various bikers getting to know each other through affiliations with the Buffalo Chip Campground.
Though a specific time has not yet been planned for the show, Beeb said it will air every Saturday, and will be online at www.big7productions.com throughout the week.
