KLOCK WERKS TOURING 180 REAR TIRE KIT–Klock Werks is announcing their new Touring 180 rear tire kit which will be available in late March of 2007. The Klock Werks kit will allow H-D bagger owners to run a 180 rear tire on a 18?x 5.5? wheel in your stock frame and swing arm. The 180 kit will also remain belt drive. The kit will include Klock Werks? new Benchmark stamped rear fenders. The fenders are widened and stretched 6? longer than stock. The fender is available either smooth or with a stamped plate pocket. Klock Werks illuminated plate frame is specifically designed to fit the plate pocket of the new stamped fender.
All Klock Werks stamped fenders are stamped from 14 gauge US steel and are e-coated to prevent rust and eliminate the traditional oil coating. Also available are Klock Werks upper and lower steel filler to hide the ugly gap in between the bags and fender as always. The Klock Werks fillers and 180 tire kit does accommodate genuine H-D detachable docking points. So riders can still run their detachable H-D sissy bar and/or tour pack.

I’m going to escape in a couple of hours and blast to Pomona to judge the bikes at the Grand Nationals Roadster Show. How did I get hooked into that? At lunch today my son Frank and the National Chaplain from the Vagos rode in. We peeled to the harbor for chow and counseling. I blasted back enlightened to culminate the vast news. Both my son and his giant workout partner are new men. It’s good to see. I’m proud of them both.
I’m not religious, but I believe there’s a code, a spirit and a brotherhood among men of integrity.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND THE LUDACRIS FOUNDATION SUPPORT CHILDREN–Harley-Davidson partnered with hip hop artist Ludacris and The Ludacris Foundation to support his annual holiday party for 100 children on December 16, 2006, in Atlanta. The party was part of the Luda Cares initiative, which supports children and families in need during the holiday season by providing food, toys and clothes. Harley-Davidson donated school bags to each child in attendance.
The Ludacris Foundation and Harley-Davidson also hosted a tailgate party at the Georgia Dome during the Atlanta Falcons versus Dallas Cowboys football game on December 16, 2006. During the party, Harley-Davidson had motorcycles on display and provided guests with giveaways. Ludacris performed his hit song “Money Maker” during the half time show.
Harley-Davidson is also donating a 2007 FLSTF Fat Boy motorcycle to The Ludacris Foundation which will be auctioned off on eBay. The motorcycle will first tour around the country gaining celebrity autographs along the way. After its first stop at the Atlanta Falcons tailgate party, the motorcycle was shipped to Las Vegas for the 2007 NBA All-Star Game in February.
ORGANIZING BUILD-OFF FOR 2008 OHIO STATE RALLY–Is their anyway you can tell me how to contact a few people that would be interested in doing a BIKER BUILD OFF for the 2008 Ohio State Rally. I will be turning in a proposal ASAP and I am not sure where to begin. They have to use Harley Davidson parts. There will be anywhere from 1000-3000 people attending. It’s hard to tell. How do you find out who will do that? Maybe places that fix Motorcycles? I don’t know, maybe you have contacts in different states?

BIKERNET READER ON STREAMLINING WORLD’S FASTEST PANHEAD–Hey Bandit, warmed up yet? I just read Rick from US choppers and his thoughts on streamlining. Maybe you could take it a step further.. If not this year then maybe next. As you know, auto racing, (drag racing, formula one, Indy, Nascar) all use wind to there advantage. Ground effects to glue the car to the track and so on.
Air pushes back when you push it (duh). So as long as it’s there anyways why not channel it to increase downward force on the rear tire instead of adding weight. The faster you go, the harder the push. It would help with traction issues at high speed. By directing the airflow UP it will push the tire DOWN.
I’m not an Aerodynamics engineer but I’m sure one of your readers is. A wind tunnel, scale model of the bike and a scale (not a triple beam) =-O would tell you how much and if it would work

DAVE ZEIN TRIBUT BANQUET–It was remarkable. We had a mix of who’s who in motorcycling. I’m sending a few pictures for you, and I think Rogue is sending you some also. If you use any of these photos, please give photo credit to “Jester”. The emotions ran the scale on Saturday night. Those who spoke, honored Dave or told humorous stories about him.
When Dave finally came up to speak, he had the crowd in awe. He spoke of the humility he had on that night, but what made the evening was telling how his unit in Vietnam was overrun, and he was one of just a few survivors. He thought about that for many years, why he was spared. It was his call to serve his fellow man and bikers, and he truly believes that was his mission and why he was spared. One of the pictures I sent you was him holding a single bullet. He explained how that was kept in a pocket, and if overrun, it was supposed to be used on yourself, rather than capture and torture. He had many stories like this that had people glued in their chairs, not a single sound in the audience.
To have a Medal of Honor recipient in the crowd added to the emotions when he spoke of Vietnam. I’ll tell you, there were chills up and down my neck and I’ve heard this story many times. I think Rogue can fill you in more from his perspective, but I think it was an historic night.
Next morning we met with Tommy Thompson and some of his campaign team. More on that later. Also, there’s a picture of Pam West, from National Parks Service, with her and Dave also up on the screen, talking about the chopper Wisconsin builders left at the Wall in D.C. That too was an emotional moment. I talked about the spiritual mood we experienced back in 1998, and how I was threatened with arrest for washing bird shit off the Wall by the Park Service.
There was one slide where I was lifted high up on the Wall by Ed Moreland, VP of Government Relations for AMA. I asked him to lift me up so the park rangers would know exactly who to arrest, and I wanted to be the first. Of course, after I started, Dave Zien, then Tommy Thompson, then about 100 other riders started to clean the Wall, and the rangers just rode off on their horses. Dave thought that was a defining moment in who we all were that day, and what we stood for.

You know I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago and it still sounds funny for me to say that. It is like it really doesn’t fit real well or I am having a hard time making it fit. Man 50, a half century, 5 decades, when you look at it like that it sounds like a long time but right now it doesn’t seem like a long time.
I tell “THE MEANEST” that since I was born in 57 that makes me a classic ! I tell her everything from 57 is a classic. What being born in 57 does mean though is that I have seen some great things in my life. When I was coming up I saw real choppers, not your T.V. land variety. I saw Easy Rider hit the big screen. I remember we all went out found old bicycle front ends and cut the tubes and added them to our bikes. We had choppers and they were bad ass or at least that is what we thought. It was some of the best times known to bikers.
I saw the first issue of Easyriders hit the newsstand. A cult following was born over night. The magazine united all of us that rode. Back then if you rode you were frowned upon by society. Now if you ride you are mainstream. I have a hard time deciding if this is a good thing or not. I know which way I prefer but if I told you I guess I would be showing my age. Man we never missed an issue of Easyriders back then. We had it down to the day when the new issue would hit the local 7-11!
Being 50 also means I saw first hand some big changes for our country. There was Vietnam and all the protest rallies. There were the race riots. Sadly I saw leaders of our country assassinated. We all saw 9-11 and more changes. So I guess with time all things change, some for the good and some for the not so good.
Being 50 makes you look back but not for long. Time does not stand still. We all have things we would like to change but the past is just that, the past. You realize what is really important in life. For me I realize that how much money you have or don’t have is not the most important thing. What is important are things like your health, your friends and loyallty. Not to put a damper on anyone but how many friends do we truly have? Not as many as we would like to think. How many are truly loyal and are there for the good and bad times, not many. That is what makes your true friends so valuable, money can’t but you true friends.
You know the part where I said we would all change things. I really only have one event in my life that I wish I had the power to change. That would be losing my son Justin at the age of 16. I have come to accept that it was out of my hands, it still hurts and I miss him a lot. I used to say how unfair it was and that I was cheated and then I realized if anyone was cheated it wasn’t me, it was Justin. That is life, it is not fair and in some ways I guess we are all cheated a little bit but you play the hand you are dealt and you play it the best you know how. So I guess I will keep the hand I have been dealt. In a lot of ways I have been blessed.
I do something I love everyday and yeah I am not getting rich by any means but I do it on my own terms and money can’t buy that. My health is good and I ride whenever I can. I share a great home with a great wife(THE MEANEST). It took me 3 times to get it right but I did it. I almost forgot I also have the world?s greatest pit bull, J.C. Am I happy? Yeah I am! How will it all play out? Who knows! That is what makes life an adventure, the unknown. If we knew what lay ahead for us, would we keep going? Maybe, Maybe not, but that is life, no promises, no guarantees, just chances, take them. Life, it is just a roll of the dice. Some days you come up snake eyes but some days are all 7s

UNDER NEW LAW, SOME MOTORCYCLISTS MUST WEAR HELMETS–University Police officer Darin Gentry said motorcyclists under 21 have always had to wear helmets, but there was no way for officers to know their ages.Jon Michael Richardson, a 20-year-old UF student, wasn’t aware of the rule.”I’ve been pulled over on my scooter before, and (the police officer) didn’t say anything about a helmet,” he said.
When Richardson bought his scooter in 2005, he wasn’t told about the rule, but he bought a helmet anyway as a precaution. Richardson said he usually rides his 2005 red Kymco scooter on campus but uses his helmet on busier roads. He said going 20 mph without a helmet is a risk he’s willing to take.But his eyes widened when he learned the price of a ticket: $123.50.
To avoid a citation, motorcyclists must get the new tag when they replace or renew old ones, said Diana Lamb, title clerk at the Alachua County Tax Collector Office.Justin Jackrel, owner of GatorMoto, said that he only recently learned of the regulations and is sending out a mailer to explain the new rules.

BUELL ANNOUNCES MILLION DOLLAR RACING CONTINGENCY PROGRAM–More Than $1,000,000 in Cash Contingencies Posted for Privateer Buell Racers Aboard XBRR and XB models in 2007
EAST TROY, Wis. (January 23, 2007) – Buell Motorcycle Company has announced an expanded racing support program for 2007, with more than $1,000,000 posted in cash contingencies for Buell racers competing in a variety of national and regional race series events and classes aboard XBRR and XB motorcycles.
“We’re committed to supporting our dealer and privateer teams through this contingency program and through trackside and technical support managed by our own Henry Duga,” said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer of Buell Motorcycle Company. “Nothing makes me and Henry happier than helping privateer Buell racers achieve their goals. THE CRAZYHORSE GAZETTE–Just because no one has heard from lately doesn’t mean I stopped painting and am hiding out in the mountains of Colorado, skiing my brains out. I can only wish. It is quite the opposite. For the past 6 weeks I have been painting like crazy until I was ready for the loony bin. The yearly torment known as the Charlotte Easyriders Bike Show was coming down the road like the stream train from hell. I had serious doubts that the bike seen in the photo above, would be painted and ready for the show. Right after Christmas I figured, no way was it going it happen. But I got over being stressed figuring I was totally screwed anyway, so I just said the hell with it and kept working.
The bodywork turned out great and the color, well look for yourself. The candy pearl orange was without a doubt the toughest color I had ever sprayed. One run, no matter how small, would result in having wait a day, then completely respray the color from the primer base. The color is impossible to retouch. So then I was happy, but that did not last. Things got worse when I realized that the design I had picked, in a word, sucked. So I said the hell with it, just go with what I had, as I was completely screwed anyway.
So I just kept going, spending 2 days trying to pick and mix the perfect gold color for the panels, but after spraying the panels, I obsolutely hated them. The clock is ticking and I have to decide if I want to take the time do the tribal in gold leaf them stripe it black or just do it all in black as the whole job sucks anyway so why waste more time? So I say what the heck and do it in varigated metal leaf. WOW. Suddenly it all comes together. The orange, the gold faded panels. The gold tones in the leaf bring it all together. Wow. I’m stunned beyond belief.
My idea that appeared to completely blow, is unreal killer. And once the tribal is striped with black and the gold panels are striped with lemon yellow, I’m floored. It is so gorgeous. Jim is nearly done with the assembly and the bikes will be at the show Saturday and Sunday.

Carolina Harley will have a big booth complete with popcorn, couches and chairs. So stop by, say hi, have a snack, rest your feets, and check out our killer choppers. The whole Carolina Crew will be there to answer any questions. I’ll be the girl collapsed on the black leather couch sleeping.
Meanwhile, our latest creation here at The Chopper Farm was featured in Ironworks last month. This bike sold less than 24 hours after we finished it. I got to ride it afterwards and all I can day is “%^&^*.” I can see why the owner, Morry Irwin loves to ride it.
But here is a sneak peek at our new project. It started out as an ’86 Liberty Edition Sportster that was so beat no one wanted it. There was so much grease and oil on you could not even see the wiring. The frame is a one off creation from Chopperhead Road, a seriously extreme bike shop in Jacksonville, NC. Jim wanted a curved single downtube. I wanteda gooseneck. Sawzall and Bill came up with a combination of both. Check these guys out at To help out the totally beat motor, Jim installed a 1200 kit. The tank came from our vintage tank collection that hangs on the wall of our shop. Jim’s in the process of building one off pipes. Now that I am not buried beneath a huge pile of Mutant parts, I’ll be posting updates on this project here on Bikernet. Also Crazy Horse Paint will be running a special on flame paint jobs in April and May! LOJACK RELEASE RESULTS OF FIRST ANNUAL MOTORCYCLE THEFT STUDY–LoJack-Equipped Recoveries Enabled Police to Discover 76 Theft Rings and Recover More Than $4.9 Million in Stolen Assets
WESTWOOD, Mass., Jan. 24 — LoJack Corporation , the leading provider of tracking and recovery systems for stolen mobile assets, today announced the results of its first annual Motorcycle Theft Study, which documents facts and trends derived from LoJack’s stolen motorcycle recovery reports for the calendar year 2006. According to the study, law enforcement recovered 292 LoJack-equipped stolen motorcycles in 2006 valued at close to $2.8 million and discovered 76 professional theft rings, enabling police to reclaim an additional $2.1 million in other stolen bikes, bike parts, accessories and miscellaneous items. In total, law enforcement recovered more than $4.9 million in stolen assets through tracking LoJack-equipped stolen motorcycles.
This report underscores the fact that organized crime rings view bike theft as a highly lucrative business opportunity and that motorcycle theft is growing along with the popularity of bike riding – which today is at an all time high. Figures released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau earlier this year indicated that more than 70,000 motorcycles were stolen in 2005. In fact, bike theft has risen 135 percent over the past five years. And not surprisingly, the LoJack report indicates that theft is especially high in states including Florida, California and Texas, where the riding season is year-round.
“Today’s professional thieves view stealing motorcycles as a theft of opportunity and an easy money-making proposition, which is why bike theft is increasing at such an alarming rate,” said Richard T. Riley, LoJack’s Chairman and CEO. “Motorcycles are relatively easy to steal when compared to cars. In many cases, the thief will simply put the bike in the back of a van and drive off with it. Because of this issue, bike owners need to take as many precautions as possible to protect their motorcycles – from employing simple common sense measures to using proven tracking and recovery systems. We’re pleased that our recovery system helped police discover such a large number of professional theft rings this year and ultimately put behind bars many of the criminals responsible for these crimes.”
Newer Sport Bikes are the Most Popular Theft Targets
While all motorcycles are vulnerable to theft, the report indicates that the most popular theft targets are the newer sport bikes. Four of the top five stolen/recovered bikes are sport bikes and 87 percent were either 2005 or 2006 models.

“Newer bikes are top theft targets for a number of reasons,” said Riley. “To begin with, they are typically in high demand and parts for new bikes aren’t always readily available. So, thieves have an opportunity to sell the bikes whole or disassemble them for parts, sometimes even selling parts online. In addition, proud owners of new motorcycles tend to ride their bikes a lot initially to show them to friends and relatives, and they often do not take the necessary theft protection measures. This year gets more wild by the minute. First there’s 360 degree brakes in wheel hubs, now we have Matt Hotch batteries that last 10 years and cost $500. I saw a demonstration. They’re amazing and for once a guy can build a killer bike, let it set for six months, ship it across the country and guarantee that it will start. Watch for reports coming weekly in our news.
We launched our third Bonneville chapter and the action is heating up for this year. Sturgis plans are already underway for Sturgis County Line, Bikernet’s home, and Jay Allen’s Broken Spoke.
On the down side I asked if I should mention companies that are having problems paying their bills, and we may be forced to take only two companies to court, Von Dutch Motorcycles and Patriot Motorcycles and Steel Dreams Television. Von Dutch has been given notice to vacate their building because they’re not paying the rent and Patriot let the entire staff of Steeds motorcycles go and quit building big motorcycles.
Only three companies, out of the hundreds we’ve dealt with have stiffed us. The other one is Johnny Suede, and we offered to sell his product-fools. Okay enough of the dark-side off the industry, let’s rock with the news. It’s happening and non-stop. The buzz is the Cincy Show, weekend after next, and all the new stuff destined to be unveiled. Some if it will be covered right here, so let’s get to it. If you can’t make Cincy then Daytona will be the place. If you can’t hit the events, stay here. Believe it or not I’ve seen lots of riders riding around with bent rims and the tire has not failed – tubeless or tube type with a tube in it. Running a tube as an extra precaution could help but running a tube in a tubeless tire on a tubeless applicable rim could cause the tire to heat up more than normal and cause premature wear. And if a rim is bent enough for a tire to leak air the rim should be replaced.

GOOD NEWS FOR THE AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST–On January 21, 2007 at the Wingate Hotel in Madison Wisconsin a group of motorcycle riders met to help get ONE OF OUR OWN to the White House as our next President.
This group will work with the motorcycle riders of the United States to help get Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin elected as President. While Tommy Thompson was Governor of Wisconsin many good pieces of legislation favorable to motorcyclist was passed. That will continue when he becomes President!
Attending the meeting were: Tommy Thompson, Dean Stensberg, Jeff Hennie, Dave Zien, Dave “Chubby” Charlebois, Kirk “Hardtail” Willard, Jerry Weiner, Rich Kuchenbecker, New York Myke, Reverend John “Rogue” Herlihy, Joe “Stormin” Norman, Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo, Vicki “#9” Sanfelipo.
Each one of these people have extensive backgrounds in motorcycling and other qualities that make them qualified for this team.
There is a lot of work to do and we will be setting up a web site so that you can stay up to date on what is happening. This and the other things we have to do will take a little time and we will keep everyone up to date on our progress.
I will be working with the motorcycle media through out this.

Glenn my boy, do we have an answer for you! Quiet baffles are available for the Fat Cat systems. They are involved to remove and install. Enthusiasts without the ability to do this themselves should have a competent mechanic complete the installation.
The team at Zippers should not have any problems with this update.
Enthusiasts have reported back to us about an increase the HP and torque by a few numbers after installing the new quiet baffle. The sound is reduced approx 50% over all. Retuning has not been an issue if you are changing from the standard baffle to the quiet baffle. This is because the cores are basically the same for the two silencers.
The baffle for your bike will need to be ordered through us because this is a special order. Our order hotline is 817-834-8961.
Please note, D & D will not warranty any systems and or parts that may be damaged through the removal and or install of the new baffles. And we do not replace them here at our facility.
Question: Why do mufflers blue?
Answer:
Chrome turns blue due to oxidation at high temperature. If you look behind our heat shields you Will find bluing on all of our headpipes due to exhaust gas temperatures above 1000 degrees F. The heat-shields provide an air-gap to reduce conductive heat transfer, plus chrome plating to reduce radiant heat transfer. Also the billet clamp mounts and the heavy gage of the heat-shields themselves help prevent hot spots. Our baffle designs incorporate a variety of protective chambers, sealed exhaust pathways and heavy gage materials to protect the finish.
Bluing of heat shields and muffler housings is caused by excessive heat generated from improper fuel mixture, ignition timing, or a combination of the two. Rich fuel mixtures burn inside the pipe and lean mixtures raise the exhaust gas temperature .

Indian Larry Tribute

Indian Larry kicked off life in April of 1949, a good year for bikes. The Harley Panhead and Indian Chiefs ruled American highways. In the tiny Upstate, NY town of Cornwall, in the Hudson River Valley, a future legend in the Art of choppers was born. A few years later, the family moved a town over to New Windsor, where Larry's love for Motorcycles began.
Larry was fascinated with the idea of motorized bikes. His first “Chopper”creation was built from his younger sister Tina's little tricycle, by adding an engine from an old lawn mower, a set of ape hanger handlebars and riding it around his neighborhood while standing on the rear step. His curious mind was never satisfied. Many people don't know the true story of how Larry lost a finger. He decided to build a better skyrocket for the 4th of July and blew it off, while constructing his prototype in the basement of his family's home.
Later, Larry laid down metal flake and his initial MC work was handle in the back yard shed, belonging to his life long friend Ted Doering. That wooden shed of Ted's eventually grew to be Ted's V-Twin Cycle parts.
Larry grew up moved to NYC. He was an artist and wanted to be a part of “the scene” and NYC's Greenwich Village was the place to be in the late '60s and early '70s for someone with Larry's talent and vision. Hippies, Bohemians and all other types of free spirited individuals flocked to Greenwich during a time when creative juices were free to overflow. But Larry was never a follower. He also didn't want to be a leader, he just wanted to be Larry.
Larry thought that a motorcycle could and should be something more than just basic transportation. His first photo feature was published in the old Iron Horse Magazine. Issue # 70 November 1987. It was of his chopped 1950 Indian Chief. I remember the bike well. It had a Cerianni Road Race front end and flames painted on one side of the gas tank and scallops on the other. Larry, not to be mistaken for a hippie, sported a greaser style haircut and only had one tattoo at the time. If memory serves, it was a Harley flaming skull.
Larry and a few friends, Paul Cox, Steg and Frank, banded together wrenching and artistic skills and opened a motorcycle shop on NYC's Lower East Side called Psycho Cycles in the early '90s. The shop moved to Rivington St. then to it's current location at 151 N. 14 St. which became Gasoline Alley in Williamsburg Brooklyn's industrial district. It is now named Indian Larry Enterprises.
In 2001, Indian Larry was invited to ride to Sturgis and set up at the Camel Road House with Jesse James and Chopper Dave, which was filmed for the Discovery Channel's Motorcycle Mania. Larry was a natural character having been in movies and TV commercials before hand. His glowing genuine personality quickly attracted the attention of producer Hugh King.
Mr. King knew a good thing when he saw it so Larry was asked to participate in his new Discovery show “The Great Biker Build Off” series. Anyone who enjoyed watching the show witnessed what Larry was all about.
Ultimately Larry was pitted against his good friend Billy Lane, of Choppers Inc., in a build off. At the final public judging of the bikes, Larry was deemed to be the winner. In his moment of triumph, Larry had the class to announce to the crowd and to the whole world that both he and Billy should share equally in the first place glory. Both bikes were an honest expression of the builder's art and skills, and it wasn't about which bike was the best. Both Larry and Billy and their crews put their hearts and souls into their respective bikes. That's the kind of person Larry was.
Larry was invited to be a guest on the Regis Philbin show and also did his famous daredevil stunts during David Letterman's Late Night show.
Larry went on to do a few more shows for the Discovery Channel's Biker Build Off series. He was featured on the cover of The Horse/BackStreet Choppers Magazine numerous times as well as Easyriders and just about every big time motorcycle magazine from as far away as Japan and Finland.
It was during the weekend last of August 2004 that Larry finished his latest and most spectacular creation, the Chain of Mystery bike for another Biker Build Off. With Larry in the lead riding the bike, that he and his talented crew built in just 10 days, they rode from NYC to the Liquid Steel show in Charlotte, NC.
At the show on Saturday, Larry entertained a crowd of 8,000 fans by performing his famous stunt show. After thrilling the crowd by riding through a Ring of Fire on his bike, He got on his personal ride, the Grease Monkey and did just one more stunt to please the crowd. He stood up on the seat and surfed the bike down the track. The bike slowed down and Larry was thrown. He suffered a severe head injury as a result and passed away in the hospital the next night surrounded by his wife and friends.
Larry left us all too soon. He rode free with the wind in his hair and the sun on his face. Larry was the kind of person that wanted every one around him to be happy. He didn't have to perform that last stunt. He just did it to give pleasure to all the people who came out for the show. People who knew him best, knew what a good genuine person he was. Builders who shared Larry's vision will look to his example for years to come. The people who loved him and knew him on an every day basis will miss his smile and warmth the most. The entire world has lost one of nature's noblemen.

SALT LAKE CITY WITHDRAWS HELMET PROPOSAL– Through the combined efforts of bikers across the country who took time to write, call and e-mail Mayor Rocky Anderson to oppose a Salt Lake City, Utah city ordinance requiring helmet use by all motorcyclists and bicyclists within the city, the proposed law has been withdrawn and the mayor’s office has responded that they have “Abandoned the proposal, due to the immense amount of calls and e-mails both from local motorcyclists and motorcyclists nationwide. We are now looking into ways to better enforce the helmet law already in existence, (for riders 18 years old and under) and require the same for bicyclists and scooters.”
“Now if that isn’t proof that combined, our voices are heard, and being pro-active in the early stages of such a proposal, I don’t know what is,” exclaimed Bill Evans of ABATE of Utah. “Utah thanks all of you who responded.”

Preparing for the V-Twin Expo plus deluged with orders, a good thing. I spoke with Rick from US Choppers about the ASSALT FRAME.We covered the following points: Rear axle stays- Solid steel Billet (for weight) rather than steel plate. Lower frame rails- 1 1/4 inch diameter (machined to accept fillers for variable weight balancing). Head tube- Solid with press in bearings rather than cheaper press in cup type head tube that could possibly rotate. Head tube with fork stop machined as one piece. I have two versions of this that I am sending Rick.Also the fork stop will be at the top rather than the bottom with limited turn radius.Rake at 34 degrees for self centering. TRUE TRAIL should be at 3 – 3 1/2 inches, this will make handling lazy and slow. Lower TRUE TRAIL would have quick steering, higher about 5 inches would require a lot of effort. A TRUE-STEER turning stabilizer will also an addition as used on “SALT SHAKER.” We covered rider position and handle bars position, 5-10 degrees back no bends. Arms should be extended with a slight bend too limit turn radius and to over steer. It will be a must for Val to do a fitment for fuel tank configuration, etc. Be Cool INCONVENIENT TRUTH– Al Gore is a punk. I know riders who run tubes in all tires, tubeless or not, for safety reasons.–BANDIT If you run a tube in a tire that is designed to be run tubeless this can generate more heat as it is just adding another layer into the mix and this can cause the tire to wear out prematurely. The whole idea of a tubeless tire is to avoid rapid deflation. There is a liner in a tubeless tire which when penetrated, wraps itself around the nail or rock or whatever has penetrated the tire. This tends to make for a very slow deflation. For example, (you can even do this in a bar and win money – bet someone you can stick a pin in a balloon and it won’t delate) take a deflated balloon and put a small square of duct tape on a section of the balloon. Now inflate the balloon and stick a pin through the duct tape square. The balloon doesn’t deflate. Now if you have a tube type rim with a tubeless tire then you do need to run a tube in the tire. –Sukoshi Fahey (Ms.) S&S FIRST TO OBTAIN EPA ENGINE CERTIFICATION– S&S Cycle, Inc. has successfully procured EPA Certification on all three of its V-Series engine families, becoming the first motorcycle engine manufacturer to produce pre-certified EPA compliant engines for use by individuals and custom bike builders. By using motors that are pre-certified to meet emissions regulations, individuals and builders can now build EPA compliant motorcycles without having to go through the complicated and costly emissions testing procedures themselves, thus allowing small volume manufacturers to build and sell as many custom motorcycles as they want to, and individuals can now own, ride and sell them without prior restrictions as long as the engine package is not altered in any way that increases exhaust emissions. Under EPA regulations issued in 2003, custom bike builders are limited to building only 24 non-compliant motorcycles per model year, and individuals are allowed to own only one EPA exempt kit bike in their lifetime. But following a year of successful efforts between the EPA and industry and consumer groups, the “Certification Procedure for Highway Motorcycle Engines” EPA letter of guidance dated July 25, 2006 CISD-06-15 (MC), now allows builders of aftermarket engines to provide EPA-compliant engine packages to individuals, dealers and small volume motorcycle manufacturers (<3,000 annual units, excluding California), thus circumventing the strict regulations applied to non-EPA compliant motorcycles. Therefore, the new Certification Procedure will permit certified engines installed in new highway motorcycle chassis to be operated or re-sold without onerous construction and ownership restrictions, provided the requirements of the procedure, as well as the federal Clean Air Act anti-tampering requirements, are met. “This is a very important announcement for the v-twin industry, including every builder and shop in the US. We have been working hard on these certifications since the letter of guidance was issued in July of 2006 and I’m extremely happy to see all three of the engine families approved just as the 2007 season is ready to kick off,” said S&S VP of Product Development, Scott Sjovall. We need your legislators office overflowing all day with people that live in their district so that they get the message that the people who vote for them want their voice heard. Don’t worry if you don’t know what to say we will have position papers for you and people to go with you if needed. If you don’t know who your legislator is we will have people to help you figure it out. If you haven’t been before, it’s fun, it’s informative, and you will come away with the feeling that you have done something to protect the lifestyle that all bikers cherish. Get there anyway you can and join ABATE, TMRAII, The Confederation of Clubs, and many individual bikers in the capitol on January 22ND, as we start fighting for your rights in what will certainly be a tough legislative session.

Yesterday, Senator Connie Williams began circulating legislation for co-sponsorship that would require people who are permitted to ride without a helmet to carry and maintain at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred while operating or riding (passenger) on a motorcycle.Senator Williams stated “It is important that motorcyclists take responsibility for their actions and that includes carrying insurance to cover the potential for an accident – whether they can prove the accident was caused by another motorist, a mishap with a deer, or debris on the roadway. “Please contact your State Senator and urge them NOT to co-sponsor this misguided bill. Anyone who is over 21 with at least 2 calendar years on a class M license or has successfully passed an approved motorcycle safety course falls into the category of permitted to ride without a helmet. So, even if you choose to ride with a lid, the law would require that you carry the medical insurance.
This type of legislation is discriminatory towards motorcyclists andis also an insult because the largest percentage of motorcycle crashes is caused by inattentive motorists (most often a left-hand turn Right-of-Way violation into our path of travel).

NEW BIKES DOMINATE ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY FOR BIKESHOWS EUROPE–Bikeshows Europe have started the new year on full throttle after heralding the 13th annual National Motorcycle Show a great success. More than 16,000 visitors packed the G-Mex Centre in Manchester over three days, for what is the first in a long season of adrenaline-fuelled consumer shows for all manner of biking enthusiast.
Based in Wilmslow, Cheshire, event organisers Bikeshows Europe were delighted not just with the turnout, but also with the number of new bikes unveiled at the 2007 show, as event director Howard Cartledge explains; –
“Visitor levels have been consistent since we acquired the show in 2003, but we are just as delighted that so many new bikes were on show. Benelli made their UK unveiling of both the bigger Tornado and the all-new Tre-K 1130cc at Manchester and Italsport from Bury displayed the new Ducati 1098 to coincide with a nationwide dealer launch. Colin Appleyard also debuted two new Harley trikes and Manchester firm Boom Trikes wowed the crowds with the stunning Swiss-built GG Quad. It is good to know that it doesn’t all have to happen at the NEC and this has been a quite prestigious leap forward for us as an organiser of smaller, but very popular regional shows.”
Howard looked to the future and said; – “We will keep the recipe the same by continuing with the indoor stunt arena, outdoor stunt shows, motorcycle dealer and trade stands, because visitors enjoy the variety; although a few of the ingredients will change to keep it fresh. Some exhibitors did suggest that sales were slightly down on the previous year, but put this down to a time of high borrowing where people are starting to feel the pinch. Having said this, enquiries about new bikes and touring holidays were significantly better and this suggests an optimistic outlook for the biking calendar.”
The next confirmed Bikeshows Europe events will be the South West Motorcycle Show in Exeter on August bank holiday and the North West Motorcycle Extravaganza at Haydock Park on September 22nd and 23rd. The company is yet to finalise details of other motorcycling events for this summer.

BOBBER DEAL OF THE WEEK–I was hoping you might be able to help me as I’ve seen you highlight bikes in the past that people are looking to sell. Here’s what I got:2005 Harley Davidson Twin Cam Bobber Special Construction – $16000
Sacrificing this awesome bobber to finance the restoration of ’69 Mustang (Mom’s first car!). This bike was built two years ago by a friend who was a mechanic at Westminster HD. I picked it up from him when he moved out of state and couldn’t take it with him. It sports a Paughco frame with HD wide glide front end and a King Sporty gas tank. Wheels are DNA. Brakes are factory 4 piston units, 2 calipers up front and a single out back. With as little weight as it’s running, it’ll stop on a dime. The engine is a 95 Cu. In. Twin Cam with S&S cases, Screaming Eagles 203 cams, Screaming Eagle 42mm Flatside Carb, S&S Breather Valves and Forged Pistons. This thing runs hard. Trans is a 5 speed HD unit and is mated to the engine with a Primo Brute IV 3″ belt drive. Pipes are custom with removable baffles. Ignition is an ultra trick, ultra compact Altmann Micro Machines P3 from Germany. Speedo is a 2 5/8, electic unit from Auto Meter. Hand Controls and four piston Brake calipers are factory HD.
Tires are Pirelli Scorpions. Signals and taillight are all LED units. No shortcuts where taken in putting this scooter together. It was made to look like it’s right out of the ’40’s but run like a modern bike with the highest level of reliabilty and safety. Together we’ve put just under 6000 miles and not an ounce of trouble. You want to look ol skool but not worry about breaking down…this is the ride for you! Ask me any question. As a special construction bike it has already been titled by California state 2 years ago, so no worries about titling, registering or insuring. Once you see how well this baby’s been put together, you know you won’t find another one like it. The bike also comes with a set of painted split fat bob gas tanks and mounting brackets.

MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF CHARGED–A Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy charged withkilling a motorcyclist while driving drunk smelled of alcohol, walkedunsteadily and said he had been driving before he demanded a lawyer andrefused to take a sobriety test, two officers testified today.At a pretrial hearing for James R. Telban Jr., charged with second-degreevehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated in the Sept. 6 death ofPeter Volkmuth in Parma, Greece Police Officer Charles St. John said hefirst encountered Telban holding onto the bed of his pickup truck after thecrash.
“I asked him if he had been involved in a motor vehicle accident thatnight,” St. John said. “He said, yes, he had. I asked him if he had beendriving. He said yes, he was. I asked him what happened. He said he wasleaving Braemar Country Club and he must have pulled out in front ofsomebody.”
Before St. John turned over Telban to a sheriff’s deputy to be arrested fordriving while intoxicated, St. John said he noticed that Telban swayed as hewalked, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and that he smelled of alcohol.
Although St. John was outside Greece, he had responded to the crash scene atthe request of a dispatcher to assist sheriff’s deputies with theinvestigation.
Deputy John Billitier, who arrested Telban, said he made similarobservations and saw Telban stumble and have to be helped by another deputy.
“I observed that his eyes were bloodshot and he had a moderate odor of analcoholic beverage emanating from his mouth, and that his movements werehesitant,” Billitier said.The crash occurred as Telban, 45, was leaving Braemar Country Club, 4704 W.Ridge Road. Volkmuth, 27, suffered a fatal head injury when his westboundmotorcycle collided with Telban’s Ford Ranger pickup truck.
Although Telban refused to take a field-sobriety test, a blood test latershowed that his blood-alcohol content was 0.24 percent – three times thelevel needed to bring a DWI charge.
Today’s hearing in Monroe County Court will determine whether sheriff’sdeputies had probable cause to arrest Telban and whether his briefstatements can be used at his trial.
Judge John J. Connell scheduled the trial to begin April 23. It should takeless than a week, said Telban’s lawyer, Joseph S. Damelio.
Telban resigned from the sheriff’s office after he was arrested. A grandjury later indicted him for vehicular manslaughter, which carries a penaltyranging from probation to seven years in prison.

HOLLISTER RALLY ORGANIZERS CLEAR FIRST HURDLE– Wednesday,Hollister – The Hollister Motorcycle Rally Committee will meet its first financial deadline with room to spare, according to rally promoter Seth Doulton.The committee paid the city $125,000 at Tuesday night’s council meeting, and must pay $250,000 by March 1 and the balance of the rally’s total public safety costs – estimated at $382,000 – by March 31. If any of those deadlines aren’t met, the city’s motorcycle rally will be canceled.
Doulton, whose company Horse Power Promotions was hired by the committee to organize the event, said he’s been working hard to enlist event sponsors and vendors, especially since the rally was approved in December. He reported that vendors have already signed up for about two-thirds of the available vending space, and that he’s distributed 10,000 promotional fliers for the Hollister rally – which brings about 100,000 bikers into town on Independence Day weekend – in the last two weeks.
“It’s a little bit of a crunch time at the office, but I feel really good about things,” Doulton said. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive.”Committee chairwoman Charisse Tyson, who owns Johnny’s Bar and Grill, said Doulton’s work has been “awesome.” When asked if she was surprised that the rally has exceeded its first financial benchmark, Tyson said, “No, not knowing Seth. I don’t doubt for a minute that we’re going to make it.”
But not everyone is thrilled at the rally’s progress. Councilman Doug Emerson has estimated that his constituents are divided 50-50 for and against the rally. And although most local businesses declined to discuss the rally’s approval, some have reported closing their doors on Independence Day weekend in the past.
“At this time, I can only say, ‘Oh well, whatever, I hope it will be fine,’ ” said Hollister resident Claudia Olson, a vocal rally opponent. “But I don’t think it will be. It’s going to grow and become a problem for the community.”Olson said the city’s leadership needs to present a vision for what Hollister will be “when we grow up.”
“Do we want to be another Sturgis?” Olson said, pointing to the South Dakota city that hosts one of the largest motorcycle events in the world. For her part, Olson is worried the city will become known as a year-round motorcycle haven.
The committee also approved an official rally logo created by Hollister resident Jim Wood of Sage Blanc, Inc. Doulton said the logo has already been licensed to companies producing official rally sunglasses, seats, helmets and wheels, with other negotiations in progress.The council declined to approve the motorcycle rally in 2006, but tens of thousands of bikers rode into town anyway, and the city had to foot the public safety bill.

This news may kick my ass. I just rolled onto the coast from Arizona where I rode Saxon Bikes with my son Frank, the mad weightlifter, tattoo artist. We’re working up a couple of features for Bikernet on how Saxon builds bikes and a road test on their Warlord. I picked the Warlord, ’cause it’s stretched and cool and the staff member who rides and tests every Saxon the build said it was his favorite. Perfect.
Frank, the son of Bandit, helped me with a road test of the Scepter Hot Rod, highbar Saxon for the HORSE. Watch for it. So I just rolled in, washed my face and downloaded 150 e-mails. Let’s hit the news. It’s cold in the shop. Hell it was even brisk in the Arizona desert near the Mexican boarder flying along the sand, passed Soyonora Cactus at 90 mph. I’ll fill you in on new Bikernet features at the end of the news:

FASTENER TOPIC OF THE WEEK– I’m working on some info for your readers on different topics of fasteners. It’s been crazy around here, just got back from SEMA, and now heading back to Vegas for a fastener show. I’m in the process of finding socket head drilled bolts and also titanium bolts. Happy New Year to all at Biker net and fellow readers. Our last article dealt with bolt tensile strength and I thought we should follow that up with plating fasteners.
We all have seen chrome bolts or grade 8 yellow finish bolts or maybe a bluish silver bolts? What do the colors mean? Generally speaking the different colors or finish have nothing to do with the grade, they are merely for corrosion protection or cosmetic appearance.
When you typically purchase fasteners such as bolts, nuts and washers the grade of the bolt generally has certain plating applied to them. Example when you buy a grade 8 bolt for suspension parts it is usually a yellow or gold finish called yellow zinc or yellow chromate. These two plating are similar but slightly different in appearance. Now don’t be fooled that all grade 8 fasteners are these two colors only. Some grade 8 comes with what we call a black oil finish not to be confused with black zinc or oxide. A black oil finish is the process a fastener goes threw during manufacturing of heat treatment. Also some grade 8 comes in a clear zinc or blue zinc finish. So the wise thing to do is always look at the makings on the head to be sure what grade you’re using.
Some of you might be using or perhaps seen SOCKETHEAD Allens with a black finish, these fasteners are grade 8 and are generally plated in black oxide or zinc. The black oxide is often a dullish finish as the black zinc has a higher gloss to it. Black oxide and zinc both have great corrosion properties but will rust. Some of us like the look of black fasteners but don’t want the rusty bolt that will come with that finish after a few months in the weather.
Is there a black bolt that has a better corrosion finish? Yes, depending on the strength you require, you can use stainless steel fasteners and plate them black zinc. We offer this to our customers who don’t want chrome or raw stainless and prefer the look of a shiny black bolt.
Chrome bolts often have the markings taken off during polishing and plating process, this can be a problem if you don’t know who you are buying from. It is always best to use a reputable source for your chrome needs. Chrome can come in two grades 5 & 8 and some times F911. At DMP Enterprises we only sell grade 8 chrome but offer grade 5 if that is what the OEM part requires.
Can someone take their own bolts and have those chromed, gold or black finished? Yes, but there are a few things to look out for, one being if you are plating a fastener that is grade 8 or stronger it needs to be backed in an oven after plating. You are probably wondering “WHAT”. It’s very simple a term called “hydrogen imbrittlement” can occur in the fastener during plating. Hydrogen imbrittlement are gases trapped in the fastener, which if not taken care of can cause failure in the bolt. Most plating shops are aware of this process of baking but will not do it unless you ask them to. At DMP we have all grade 8 bolts baked for 6-8 hours and grade above that between 9-10 hours. This is still not a fool proof way of getting rid of hydrogen imbrittlement but it seems to generally work and has been the process for many years in the plating business.

DAN GURNEY’s 40th ANNIVERSARY YEAR–
2007 marks the anniversary year of Dan Gurney’s historic F 1 victory withthe All American Racers Eagle in the Grand Prix of Belgium atSpa-Francorchamps on June 18, 1967. In the 100 year history of Grand PrixRacing he remains the only American who managed to put an American Formula 1car of his own construction in the winner’s circle of a World ChampionshipGrand Prix. It is also the 40th anniversary of Ford’s all-American win atthe 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Dan co-drive the winning car with AJ Foyt.
While these two outstanding victories remain the highlights of Gurney’s 1967racing season, his whole year was one for the record books and quite typicalof his schedule during the preceding 8 years.
In 1967 he crossed the Atlantic several times starting the season at the F 1Grand Prix of South Africa in Kyalami on New Years Day and ending it at theRex Mays 300 for Indy cars in Riverside, California in November. When allwas said and done he had participated in 27 major events driving Stock cars,Sports cars, Indy cars, Formula 1 cars, Cam Am and TransAm machines. He hadput his car among the first three on the grid no less than 18 times, leadingmany races but suffering a multitude of mechanical breakdowns.
In February he set the fastest qualifying time for the 24 Hours of Daytonain a Ford MK II.
In March he won the pole and all three heats of the Formula 1 Race ofChampions at Brands Hatch, England, giving his Eagle and the new purposebuilt Gurney-Weslake V 12 engine its first victory.
In April he won by inches (over Parnelli Jones) the 4.5-Hour TransAm 113?(in the shade) heat marathon at Green Valley, Texas in a Ford MercuryCougar.
In May he put his new Indy Eagle – Ford on the front row of the Indy 500,between Mario Andretti and Gordon Johncock. A week later he debuted hisbrand-new Titanium F 1 Eagle at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort putting iton the front row between Graham Hill and Jack Brabham,
In June he won the 24-Hours of Le Mans (with A.J.Foyt) driving a Ford GT 40Mark IV, establishing a new race record and starting the champagne sprayingtradition in the winner’s circle. One week later he scored his historicvictory at the Grand Prix of Belgium at Spa with the fastest race speed everrecorded for a Grand Prix at that time,
In August he was leading the Grand Prix of Germany at the Nuerburgring by42 seconds when a broken U-joint took him and the Eagle out of the race twolaps before the finish.
In September he got a podium at the F 1 Grand Prix of Canada at Mosport.
In October he put his Lola Cam Am machine on the pole at the Cam Am Race atRiverside leading this race until mechanical trouble took him out.
In November he won the Rex Mays 300 for Indy cars at Riverside in alegendary come-from-behind battle considered by many “Dan Gurney’s finestDrive.”Not resting on his laurels for long: In January, driving a Wood BrothersFord stock car, he won the NASCAR Motor Trend 500 at Riverside for the fifthtime!

HARLEY-DAVIDSON REPORTS REVENUE AND EARNINGS GROWTH FOR 2006–Milwaukee, Wis., January 18, 2007 — Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) today announced its results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2006. Revenue for the quarter was $1.50 billion compared to $1.34 billion in the year-ago quarter, an 11.9 percent increase. Net income for the quarter was $252.4 million compared to $230.0 million, an increase of 9.7 percent over the fourth quarter of 2005. Fourth quarter diluted earnings per share (EPS) were $0.97, a 15.5 percent increase compared to last year’s $0.84.
Revenue for the full year was $5.80 billion, compared with $5.34 billion in 2005, an 8.6 percent increase. Wholesale shipments of Harley-Davidson motorcycles were 349,196 units for the year, a 6.1 percent increase compared to 2005. Net income for the year was $1.04 billion, an 8.7 percent increase versus last year’s $959.6 million. Diluted EPS for the full year were $3.93, a 15.2 percent increase compared with $3.41 in 2005.
“After more than two decades of uninterrupted growth at Harley-Davidson, our dedicated employees and passionate dealers have once again delivered excellent results,” said Jim Ziemer, Chief Executive Officer. “I couldn’t ask for a more committed workforce and dealer network.”
“In 2006, the Company’s revenue and earnings surpassed 2005 results demonstrating continued growth. At the same time, our dealers achieved impressive Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales volumes. The enthusiastic worldwide response to the changes in our 2007 models contributed to an 8.5 percent increase in retail sales during the year,” said Ziemer.
“Furthermore, the Company continued to return significant value to shareholders in 2006. We increased dividend payments by 22.5 percent over the prior year and repurchased 19.3 million shares of our common stock during 2006 at a cost of $1.06 billion.”
“As we look to the future, we believe Harley-Davidson will deliver EPS growth in the range of 11 – 17 percent each year through 2009. On an annual basis we expect solid revenue growth, margin improvement, and the benefits of strong free cash flow to drive this earnings growth,” said Ziemer.
The Company also expects to ship between 82,000 and 84,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles for the first quarter of 2007.
Motorcycles and Related Products Segment – Fourth Quarter Results
Revenue from Harley-Davidson motorcycles was $1.22 billion, an increase of $135.6 million or 12.5 percent over the same period last year. Shipments of Harley-Davidson motorcycles totaled 92,848 units, an increase of 5,260 units or 6.0 percent over last year’s fourth quarter.
Revenue from Parts and Accessories (P&A), which consists of Genuine Motor Parts and Genuine Motor Accessories, totaled $179.2 million, an increase of $9.3 million or 5.5 percent over the year-ago quarter. Revenue from General Merchandise, which consists of MotorClothes apparel and collectibles, totaled $70.6 million, an increase of $10.1 million or 16.7 percent over the year-ago quarter.
Gross margin for the fourth quarter of 2006 was 38.0 percent of revenue compared to 38.3 percent for the fourth quarter last year. Fourth quarter operating margin decreased to 22.8 percent from 23.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2005.
Motorcycle Retail Sales Data
During the fourth quarter, worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 6.4 percent over the prior year quarter. In the U.S., retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 0.3 percent for the quarter while the heavyweight motorcycle industry in the U.S. decreased 1.7 percent. Retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 29.4 percent in international markets during the fourth quarter of 2006 compared to the fourth quarter of 2005. Fourth quarter retail sales increased 31.2 percent in Europe; Japan was up 19.6 percent; Canada was up 37.4 percent and all other international markets combined were up 34.0 percent.
Worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 8.5 percent in 2006 compared to 2005. In the U.S., retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 5.9 percent while the U.S. heavyweight motorcycle market was up 4.9 percent for the same period. In our international markets, Harley-Davidson retail sales for the full year grew 18.6 percent. Retail sales in Europe increased 14.6 percent; Japan was up 16.3 percent; Canada was up 15.9 percent and all other international markets combined were up 34.3 percent.
Financial Services Segment
Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS) reported fourth quarter operating income of $47.6 million, an increase of $8.1 million or 20.7 percent compared to the year-ago quarter. The increase is primarily due to higher wholesale and retail net interest income.
Harley-Davidson, Inc. – Twelve Month Results
For the fiscal year ended 2006, revenue totaled $5.80 billion, an 8.6 percent increase over 2005. EPS were $3.93, an increase of 15.2 percent compared to 2005.
Shipments of Harley-Davidson motorcycles were 349,196 units in 2006, a 6.1 percent increase compared to last year’s 329,017 units. Harley-Davidson motorcycle revenue was $4.55 billion, up 8.8 percent compared to last year’s $4.18 billion. P&A revenue totaled $862.3 million, a 5.7 percent increase over last year’s $815.7 million. General Merchandise revenue totaled $277.5 million, a 12.0 percent increase compared to $247.9 million during 2005.
Motorcycle segment gross margin for the full year was 38.5 percent of revenue compared to 38.2 percent for 2005. Full year 2006 operating margin increased to 24.4 percent from 24.3 percent compared to the prior year.
HDFS operating income was $210.7 million, a 10.0 percent increase over last year’s $191.6 million.
Cash Flow
Cash and marketable securities totaled $896.5 million as of December 31, 2006. Cash flow from operations was $761.8 million and capital expenditures were $219.6 million during 2006. In 2007, capital expenditures are expected to be between $300 million and $325 million.

FRANCIS HIGH – DUALING HIGH SCHOOL BUILD-OFF COMPETITORS FOR DONNIE SMITH SHOW–Brent Stavig, Metal Instructor of St. Francis High School, St. Francis, MN, heads up Chopper High where his students at are building a Chopper of their own design. They are competing in the 2007 Donnie Smith Chopper Class Challenge against Kevin Baas and Kennedy High School at the 2007 Donnie Smith Invitational Bike Show on March 25 and 26th in the Saint Paul’s RiverCentre.
This is the second year for the students to build a bike. Last year’s Chopper was called the Iron Saint, which won the People’s Choice award at the 2006 Donnie Smith Invitational Bike Show.Before a wrench was turned or a bolt tightened on the competition motorcycle, the 30 students at Chopper High worked on a 50cc mini chopper. They took a trimester practicing different techniques and making the parts for the bike like the a gas tank, handle bars and seat pan.
The program has become a biker community project with individuals and corporations jumping in to help the youths in there journey of developing rolling art.
Choppers Inc. donated a frame, Kokesh Motorcycle is helping the class determine the parts that will work with it. Kevin Lasso, service manager at Zylstra Harley-Davidson, personally donated a Harley-Davidson Shovelhead motor and a four speed transmission. They may use the Shovelhead, however, a large new style V-Twin would be ideal for the project. Matt Hotch Designs has thrown in some parts not to mention several large commitments such as a drive train from R-Max USA by Roadmax, a Thunder Saddle from Metric Thunder and parts from Dennis Kirk.

STEALTH ACTION IN CHARLOTTE–Winter finally hit the Charlotte area with cold temps and some ice and there isn’t any bread or milk within 50 miles! With the mention of ice and cold around here people go into a panic? You know it is funny the past few weeks the temps have been spring like and people were complaining that winter was never going to come, now that it is here they are complaining about the ice! Go figure that one! Me, I am just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round!
Here at Stealth Bike Works things have been quite the last week. We still have work in the shop though and that is a good thing. We still have all the wanna be bike builders come and talk about building a bike and that is as far as it ever goes , talk! This week one wanted a rigid frame with a swingarm???? Maybe he was talking about a softail frame? You know I just turned 50 last week and I find my patience is running a little thin these days and I get annoyed real easy with a lot of the “I’m gonna talk.”
This time of year is my least favorite time of the year. Things seem to stand still and the month drags by. I am already looking forward to spring. Do I sound grumpy? Probably! One of the things that really gripes my ass is when someone tells you they are going to do something and they don’t show up. If you are not going to do what you say, don’t say you are, keep your word!
All is not dismal though. The Easyriders bike show come to Charlotte next weekend (Jan. 27th&28th), that should make for a good time. SBW is entering a bike, so I am looking forward to the show. The bike from the Pomona show looked great. The show here in Charlotte usually draws big crowds.
Well that is about it. I gotta go do something I promised a friend I would do!
