Indelible Images: Engraving On A New Level
By Paul Garson |
When we think of engraving, we might think of the U.S. Mint where money is printed from intricately engraved metal plates, the stuff Humphrey Bogart was also chasing down along with counterfeiters. But I think it’s all digital now. Gone are the master craftsmen who made a little money making big money for Uncle Sam. Then there are engravings we’ve seen in the history books, make that the History Channel now, much of it found it seems on the beautifully designed weapons, flintlocks and the such or even on the hilts of swords or on gilded saddles rode into medieval battles by metal clad knights of yore. Of course engraving is found in wood block art prints as well in the production of books, newspapers and the such, such printing efforts first seen in the 1450s, today again an art fading away in the Digital Age.
Simply put, engraving is the art of cutting lines in metal, wood, or other material either for decoration or for reproduction. It was used for adornment in jewelry as far back as 1000 B.C. That lost art has been rediscovered by Laguna Beach based Tay Herrera, examples of his beautiful and timeless engravings seen here, albeit with a very modern spin, the spin found smoking off 300 series tires rolling on highly custom street and show bikes. Tay has melded metal engraving and motorcycling into a composite artform.
As in many artforms with history behind them, Tay’s talents were part nature, part nurture. Says Tay, “I always knew I was an artist and was drawing people since I was seven.” Growing up in Hacienda Heights, CA, Tay’s father owns and operates a specialty woodshop. “A really talented man, my father also made custom gun cases for people like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, awesome stuff. My Dad was a master woodcarver but I just helped out with the bandsaw and stuff. I tried woodcarving once when I was eleven and almost cut my finger off. I didn’t dig wood,” laughs Tay.
One day my Father asked me if I wanted to see something cool? “Being a 17-year old punk, I said no. But he told me to come look at something that would throw me for a loop.” So I went with him to meet Angelo Bee, a true master engraver. “At his shop, we found him engraving eight golden ducks with a hammer and a chisel into a Browning shotgun. It was an artform I had never seen before. I was instantly hooked and couldn’t stop watching.”
Tay would go on to engrave guns himself. “Looking back I shouldn’t have jumped in so quickly, because I really chopped them up before I knew what I was doing. I actually had to buy one gun myself because I messed up it up so badly.”
But over the years his skills grew laser sharp, his eye and hand coordination matching his artistic skills. It all culminated about ten years ago when he began engraving motorcycles. “That first bike was part of a restoration project for a friend’s Moto Guzzi. At that point, I got an inkling of what I should be going with this. I did some engraving on a Suzuki I had at the time and went looking for a bike shop to show them what I could do. In Hollywood while showing them my bike engraving, I found they were more interested in what I was doing with guns.”
In 1995 he heard of C.J. Allan, a motorcycle engraver and was very impressed by his work and considers him an influence. The next push toward bike engraving came when he saw a bike show about the new Harley VRod on the Discovery Channel. “As a result, I started coming up with engraving designs for bikes.”
Back in 2003 Tay got interested in custom knife engraving, taking an advanced class GRS in Kansas to learn how to do fine line-engraving combining a pneumatically driven tool and a microscope. He laughs and says, “The first day I couldn’t even draw a straight line. The guy behind me was, like me, a hammer and chisel guy and we were both cussing away, but by the end of the week we were doing gold inlays and killer designs.”
In 2003 he brought an engraved exhaust pipe to a show in New Orleans. “People, including Dave Perewitz, looked at it and said, ‘nice but we’ve seen it before.’” Dave Perewitz distributed gun-style engraved parts in the mid ‘70s. “I realized I had to come up with something the industry had never seen before. I went back to a European form that I had used on some of my gun engraving, a 3-D style, and that brought the response I was looking for. In particular from Jesse James. He jumped on it. He’s a trend setter and saw it right away. Then for two years straight I worked on his parts, particularly his line of air cleaners. He was really cool; he left the designs up to me. I couldn’t even tell you how many pieces I did for him. It was a good thing.”
The next milestone for Tay was facilitated by custom bike builder Trevelen of SuperCo who was building a bike for the “Biker Build-off” TV show.“He came down and showed me what he wanted done and I told him how much and he said okay. I engraved the bike’s air cleaner, rocker boxes, magneto and oil bag.”
The bike won the competition and helped open the door for Tay. “Before that my Web site was getting maybe 10 hits a day. A couple hours after the TV show aired, I had 10,000 hits.”
One illustration of his burgeoning work was the appearance of three custom bikes carrying his artwork at the recent Easyriders Pomona Bike Show. Danny Bogart’s Harley with Tay’s engraving took home the First Place in Stock Custom Class while the two other customs with Tay’s work, including Trevelen’s “El Peligroso” won a First Place while his all copper bike, again with Tay’s handiwork, won Best of Show.
Most of his motorcycle engraving skills serve to enhance billet aluminum of which he says, “It took me a while to develop working in such soft metals because I had been working in the harder metal for the gun engraving.”
While we were speaking with Tay his work table held projects for A-list builders Jesse James, Paul Cox, SuperCo and Choppers Inc. In conjunction with the Indian Larry Legacy people, he had also recently created some art deco design engraving for Brad Pitt, so does find time to take on other jobs.
As far as his future goals, in addition to creating more unique custom bike engraving, he’s also developing a line of jewelry fashioned in gold and silver. He laughs and says, “They’re big, obnoxious rings…I’ve got one called Dental Plan. If you get punched with one, well, you know.

JOHN REED EXPLAINS V-BIKE FORK STOPS–I just walked across to my V with the Paoli forks,It has the tank that came with the V (regency) I have sawed the back of the 1/4″ ally platethat is also used as the fork stops, and screwed a 3/4″ od spacer in the holes that werein the original Paoli lower tree, and the bars etc clears the tank on both sides by about 0.150″
For fuck sake. did you get my sketch etc, etc?
If you put a spacer in the holes in the side of the lower tree that held the lower fairing bracket on a stock V3/4outside diameter and don’t touch the stop welded on the frame the same as it left Santee, the spacer hits the side of it, and give you about60 degrees each side of the center line, any more and you will have a trials bike. You should phone me.

I DON’T BELIEVE THE FOLLOWING– June 22 (Bloomberg) — Trading in options to buy shares of Harley-Davidson Inc. surged to a record on speculation that the biggest U.S. motorcycle maker may be acquired by Honda Motor Co., the world’s largest maker of motorcycles.
A combined Harley-Davidson and Honda would command as much as 60 percent of the U.S. large motorcycle market, Tim Conder, an analyst with A.G. Edwards & Sons in St. Louis, said in a research note today.
The number of call options traded jumped to 49,848 contracts, an all-time high, as of 4 p.m. in New York, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Volume hadn’t exceeded 25,000 contracts since October 2005. The most active call, which gives investors the right to purchase Harley-Davidson shares at $70 by July 21, rose sevenfold in price to 35 cents. Earlier, it jumped 10-fold.
“There are rumors of a potential takeover,” said Frederic Ruffy, an options analyst at Redwood City, California-based Optionetics.com. “Investors think it’s credible. They expect an announcement in the short term and a big move in the stock.”
Conder called the speculation “false” because an offer from Honda may not survive U.S. Federal Trade Commission scrutiny and a merger might “alienate U.S. customers.” The analyst has a “hold” rating on Harley-Davidson shares.
Bob Klein, a spokesman for Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson, declined to comment. Honda spokesman Jon Seidel didn’t immediately return a voice message seeking comment.
The company’s shares rose the most since October, adding 4 percent to $62.55 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. They touched $63.99 earlier.
Traders “are looking to get as much leverage as possible” by buying contracts that expire next month — the July calls –at a so-called strike price that’s more than $7 higher than Harley- Davidson’s share price, Ruffy said. “That’s a sign they expect something soon because it would take a major announcement to push the stock up to $70.”

THAT’S IT FOR THIS SUMMER THURSDAY–We try to shut down the phones on Thursday, since the news kicks our butts. It’s like producing an entire magazine in a day. Sometimes over 100 pages of content. We scramble, but today Jeremiah snuck in the back gate and started working on his bobber Shovel. “I’m gonna ride it to the Smoke Out West, and you’re riding your Shovel, damnit.” We’ve built some very cool components and you’ll see it come together shortly on Bikernet. But he started grinding welds and taping parts to be powdered, while I hammered on the news.
We actually escaped the confines of the Bikernet ghetto headquarters to grab lunch at Shamrocks, the fresh fish market a few blocks away. Felt good to take a break, sit in the sun, munch on a shrimp and veggie burrito and sip a Corona. Ah, life is good, even in a ghetto.
So, usually I ramble about what’s coming on Bikernet and the Bonneville bike, but screw it. I’m scrambling on a massive tranny install article from Rivera Primo and a Softail Bobber tech from Wolfgang. Okay, okay, let’s ride outta here. Tomorrow we’re headed over to Gard Hollinger’s LA Chop Rods to watch him make the cowling for the gas tank dash, and help him with some of his products. You’ll see the cowling, his products and the Bonneville bike nearly completed next week if the front end arrives! We gotta go to paint within 10 days.
Ride Forever,

BIKERNET ART TECH TIP–My “Hot Pursuit on Route 66” picture started out with a photo I’d shot of a run-down motel near Antioch, CA. As you can see, besides digitally altering the basic building quite a bit, I changed the “Rooms” sign to read “Hacienda”. I also added a bunch of details like the neon sign in the window that says “Heated Cess Pool”, the rooftop “Canyon Club” sign, the Route 66 sign, etc.
The chick on the bike is my friend Natalie, who’s already in several of my other pictures (do I need to explain why?). We were at a car show and I got her to sit on a bike for me while I snapped away. I wasn’t that crazy about the bike she’d sat on though, so I digitally built a new one beneath her from a combination of 4-5 bikes I’d previously shot.
I also made some changes to her outfit like shortening her skirt, adding pink panties, and increasing her bust size! All of the other choppers are made up from a combo of parts from pics I’d shot, as is the cop car (note the added headers and hood scoop) and the cop.
I shot the bikers at assorted car shows, and the background scenery on my way to Sante Fe. The ‘ol town in back is a portion of the Bodie (CA) ghost town, which I shot a few years ago. By the way, the title was originally “Hot Pussuit on Route 66”, but I was catching a lot of heat from the female faction (especially my girlfriend!), so I cleaned it up. Anyway it rhymes better now!
This picture and all of my art is available on my website: www.retrovisions.com

THE LEGENDS SEEK RECORDS– Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, and Quasimodo were all talking one day.
Sleeping Beauty said, ” I believe myself to be the most beautiful girl in the world.”
Tom Thumb said, ” I must be the smallest person in the world.”
Quasimodo said, ” I absolutely have to be the most disgusting person in the world.”
So they all decided to go to the Guinness Book of World Records to have their claims verified.
Sleeping Beauty went in first and came out looking deliriously happy, ” It’s official, I AM the most beautiful girl in the world.”
Tom Thumb went next and emerged triumphant, ” I am now officially the smallest person in the world.”
Sometime later, Quasimodo comes out looking utterly confused and says, ” Who the heck is Rosie O’Donnell
DR. STEVE 1965-2007 MEDICINE MAN OF THE WIREGRASS WINDS–Dothan Alabama- Dr. J. Steve Sherrer Jr., or just “Dr. Steve” to his legions of friends and colleagues, passed away from us Sunday, June 24, 2007, due to injuries sustained in an accident while driving his vintage 1929 Ford Coupe when he apparently missed a curve and crashed into a utility pole at about 12:30 a.m. He died from blunt force trauma to the head he sustained in the accident. “It appears that he hit his head on the windshield and the metal frame around the window” Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd said.
The fatal crash was a low-speed accident; police said the vehicle was only traveling at about 30 mph when the wreck occurred. According to Dothan Police Sgt. Tim Ward and Byrd, the seat in the car had come unbolted during the accident, which may have contributed to Dr. Steve’s death.Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at Calvary Baptist Church and Dr. Steve was buried at Meadow Lawn Cemetery, in Enterprise, Alabama. The family received numerous friends at the church and friends can send cards and letters to 664 N. Bay Springs Road, Dothan, Alabama. The family asks that memorial donations be sent to the Special Olympics c/o Dothan Police Department, 210 N. St. Andrews St., Dothan, AL 36303.
Dr. Steve was born July 9, 1965, in Enterprise where he spent all of his young life. He graduated from Enterprise High School in 1983. He went on to attend UAB and graduated from medical school at the University of South Alabama in 1992. After serving two years of his residency he moved to Dothan in 1994. He then began his medical career at Prime Care and has been a partner there for the past 13 years. He was known for his genuine care and concern for his patients which developed into lasting friendships. He never forgot his roots of growing up in the country on a farm in Enterprise.Dr. Steve was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Steve, a devoted husband, father, and son will be greatly missed by many, not just in Alabama but around the country. His chopper “Bootlegger” won top honors in 2006, where he won first place in the judged class best for “Old School” at the Memphis V-Twin show. Dr. Steve’s sled was featured is several national magazines, most recently in the August issue of Biker Magazine as a “Sweet Hog O’ Mine.” Issue #247.
His Bootlegger is also featured in the latest edition of the Jammer Handbook. In this day and age of so many lawyers, doctors and dentists out there riding amongst us, Dr. Steve was the real deal.
Dr. Steve comes from a long line of hard working, dedicated peanut and cotton farmers deep in the heart of Dixie. The oldest of three, Steve was given a 1969 50cc Italian Indian mini bike at four years old. Steve ran that little yellow machine all over the farm lands of Sherrer Farms. One day, he accidentally added diesel fuel and, then unbeknownst to little Steve at the time; that little bike was put away per Grandpa Bill, in a barn.
Schooling and books came easy for Steve and when his other Grandpa Fred got sick, Steve decided, then in the sixth grade, to become a doctor. He began like many riding dirt Endros and got his motorcycle license at fourteen. In college, Steve rode a GS500 Suzuki and then he met his beautiful wife, Alison, a physical therapy student while attending Medical school at the University of Southern Alabama.
Becoming a medical doctor is something a lot of kids talk about doing. Steve grew up to actually become one. Staying close to the family was important to Dr. Steve and after starting his own practice in Dothan, Alabama in 1994, his first paycheck bought him a ’94 Fat Boy. He sold that in 2000, and bought a lime green Bourget. That lasted only a few months and when he got a Heritage for Ali to ride, she got really pissed when a motorist pulled the big shit in front of him and he totaled her bike. So he bought a Road King and it was about that time he became the official doctor for the crew at Accurate Engineering. He’ll tell you that “Silvadene” is the real miracle worker and that he was captivated by the diligence and intensity behind the Accurate Engineering principles. Thus Dr. Steve became the first owner of a 120 Outlaw Panhead chop in the country.
Steve believes in giving credit where credit is due. He credits his biker lifestyle to roaming the Wiregrass with Lil’ Jay and his numerous close riding partners. They all follow a southern Alabama North Florida band aptly named “Bootlegger”. They were often spotted at the Outpost in Freeport, Florida on Sundays hanging with the boys in the band. Redneck ingenuity and being “tore slam up” can produce the best in bona fide choppers and people on the planet.
Dr. Steve leaves behind his wife, Allison, his son Trey, 13, and daughter, Hannah. His father, Jack Sherrer, and his mom, Nancy Sherrer, Panama City, Florida. A brother, Scott (Mindy) Sherrer, and his sister Stephanie (Bryan) Amlong. There are several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a brindle boxer that will also miss him deeply.
Here is the link to his guest book, courtesy of the Dothan Eagle, the local newspaperhttp://www.legacy.com/Link.asp?I=GB000089672435 See for yourself what an amazing man he is. While we will miss his sly smile and profoundly calm voice, he will ride in our hearts forever. Godspeed, my brother .
TRUE-TRACK TESTIMONIAL FROM HAWAII–Update on the true track: So I installed it and yes, you weredead on. She rides like she should, now. The difference is weird!Without it on, Miss Road King would always lean left when I tooka hand off the bars. Didn’t matter which hand, she leaned left.Didn’t steer left or drift left, just leaned so that I would haveto hang a partial butt cheek off the right side of the saddle.I know a bit about hula, but I don’t know what this means or whythis happens? I’m a decent wrench, but no giro~engineer. Nonethe less it’s gone now.
Also, she used to feel very sloppy andloose (wobble as mentioned before like the engine or swing arm isdisconnected). And all she was able to give in a sustained speedwas around 65-70 mph. She could burst up to higher speeds, butwas REALLY NOT happy doing so. Now she feels tight, dialed in,re-connected, and glides along very happy and easy at 85+ mphand can handle higher speeds with ease (on a closed track withprofessional rider, do not attempt on public roads!)
To put it into words, it’s like first she was riding along withher swing arm just a flippin’ and floppin’ and as loose as agoose … trailing along not adding to any forward momentum butbeing dragged along with the bike and all her parts. Now she’sactually dialed in! Her swing arm is now part of the forcedriving forward. A truly remarkable amazing change! Sure worththe bucks for the cheap insurance!
One thing I would add, my torque wrench wasn’t able to go downto the 7-9lbs for the 5 bolts into the transmission cover. Mightwant to mention NOT to try using a torque wrench that won’t godown that low (as I found out, mine set under 10 lbs) becausethe wrench won’t “click” and you’ll be putting WAY more than7-9lbs on those bolts. I had to back those bolts out and re-dothem with a proper torque wrench. Snugging them by hand wouldwork as well (like you guys did).
Lucky, I didn’t force and”broke dem” (as we say in Hawaii)! … I could see this mayeasily happen. Just a note of caution to the unaware.
Thanks again for all your help! What a tremendous resourceBikernet is! Thanks for keepin’ it real!
Ride straight & true and leave da hula to da wahines!
Mahalo nui (Again, many thanks from the heart),

STEALTH BIKE WORKS SURVIVES SMOKE OUT EAST–This past weekend STEALTH BIKE WORKS was at the Smoke-Out in Salsibury NC. We had a BLAST! We got to meet fellow Bikernet readers and contributors. One Eye, who came all the way from Canada, Lucky, Jayfouy and Jackrocks. It was a real pleasure meeting all of you. It is good to put faces with people we talk to every week.
As I have said before the Smoke-Out is my favorite event to attend. The bikes are cool and the people who attend really make the event what it has become. These are hardcore bobber and chopper riders. The bikes you see are bare bones no nonsense bikes. If you are planning on carrying anything on these bikes, it had better fit in your pockets! You see Flatheads, Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovels, Evo’s and even an occasional twin cam. You see the coolest Triumphs on the planet. We even saw a couple of snortin’ Nortons!
For me the Smoke-Out always takes me back in time to a place when I was a lot younger. The event always inspires me with ideas. You see things there that you will not see anywhere else. All of the vendors are independent shops and that adds a special flavor to the Smoke-Out.
This was the last year for the Smoke-Out in Salsibury. No need to go into the details on that now. Where ever the Smoke-Out is next year, we will be there.
We have attended every Smoke-Out in Salsibury and they were all GREAT events! I would like to personally thank Edge for all of his hard work over the years and the staff at THE HORSE for always putting on a GREAT event. All of us at STEALTH BIKE WORKS really appreciate all of your efforts. The Smoke-Out has become the event to measure all others by.
We are already looking forward to next year!
Until next week, RIDE!

DRAG SPECIALTIES BLUE RIDGE RUN ATTRACTS DEALERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY–ASHEVILLE, North Carolina June 3rd through June 6th, 2007.The second Annual Drag Specialties Dealer Ride was, once again, a huge hit with dealers, vendors and Drag Specialties employees. For 2007 the ride was held in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and was based out of the Crown Plaza Resort-Asheville.
2007 saw 143 attendees from across the country arrive in Asheville on Sunday June 3rd and take part in a truly wonderful week. An open house held at the Drag Specialties Flat Rock, NC distribution center, had dealers interacting directly with an impressive list of vendors brought in for the week. Dealers could visit each Drag Specialties vendor personally and ask questions, discuss future product developments or catch up on the latest each company has to offer.
On Monday and Tuesday, each participant could choose from two pre-selected loops through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The first was a slower paced, scenic ride from Asheville up to Johnson City, Tennessee, and then down the famous Blue Ridge Parkway with a stop in Boone, NC for lunch. This loop gave wonderful views of the mountains and traveled across the highest elevation on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.
The second choice was a trip through Maggie Valley and over to Deal’s Gap, home of US 129 or better known as The Tail of the Dragon. Maybe the most famous motorcycling road in the United States, The Dragon boasts 318 curves in 11 miles and is a demanding stretch for any rider. Hugging Fontana Lake and the surrounding mountains, The Dragon gave everyone spectacular vistas and many photo opportunities. This loop ran across a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway as well.
Also of note was a side trip to the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. Every Blue Ridge Run participant who visited was overwhelmed and amazed at Dale Walksler’s devotion and commitment to preserving the history of American made motorcycles. The museum has an impressive collection of Harleys, Indians and other rare bikes manufactured in the United States and is a must see for any rider.
Other events included dinner each night, various awards for the week and plenty of time for each participant to gather and catch up with old friends or make new ones in the industry. With an already planned 3rd annual trip set for 2008, the Drag Specialties Dealer Ride is a “must do” on anyone’s yearly calendar.

OCC CLAN ACCUSED OF BANKRUPTCY FRAUD–1 of 3 Orange County Ironworks LLC on Stone Castle Road in Rock Tavern, the Teutuls other family business, has been accused of bankruptcy fraud.
Poughkeepsie, Three members of the Teutul family of Orange County Choppers fame defrauded the creditors of their family’s other business, according to a complaint filed Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
The complaint accuses Paul Teutul Sr. and his sons, Paul Teutul Jr. and Daniel Teutul, of engineering the fraudulent bankruptcy of O.C. Iron Works Inc. in order to avoid paying the company’s creditors.
The bankruptcy fraud complaint is similar to a civil lawsuit seeking monetary damages. The complaint doesn’t name a dollar amount, but court papers suggest the Teutuls and the iron works business could be on the hook for $1.3 million or more if they lose.
The complaint is not related to Orange County Choppers, the reality television phenomenon that launched the Teutuls to stardom. Instead, it focuses on the steel fabrication and erection business Paul Teutul Sr. built before he started building bikes.
According to court papers, Paul Teutul Sr. transferred that business to Paul Teutul Jr. The business was called O.C. Iron Works. Paul Sr. continued to serve as a consultant.
Paul Jr. then sold the assets of the business to Orange County Ironworks LLC, which is owned by his brother, Daniel Teutul.
According to the complaint filed by Bankruptcy Trustee Tom Genova, the Teutuls systematically moved the equipment, employees, accounts and other assets of the steel fabrication business O.C. Iron Works to a new company, Orange County Ironworks LLC, but the new company didn’t pay fair compensation. The Teutuls then had O.C. Iron Works file for bankruptcy, leaving creditors out in the cold.
The complaint also names Orange County Ironworks LLC as a defendant.

Ride Hard, BAR OWNER DOUBTS FIGHT OVER MOTORCYCLE LEAD TO MURDER–Harris County homicide detectives are investigating the death of Clarence Cambron Jr., 47, who was found dead in his home early Friday after a fight outside a bar in south Houston. Sheriff’s officials initially reported that Cambron had kicked over a Harley-Davidson motorcycle after he was thrown out of the Almeda Depot bar in the 14000 block of Almeda. According to sheriff’s officials, a man inside a nearby grocery store then got into a fight with Cambron.Cambron was found dead at 5 a.m. Friday by his father at their home in the 14000 block of Papdosa, less than a mile from the bar. Lt. John Martin, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said the case is under investigation. “We have spoken with the guy who had his motorcycle knocked over,” Martin said. “At this point, no charges have been filed. It will probably have to go to the DA’s office.” The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine an official cause of death. Ryan Mark Howell had been erroneously released from the Volusia County Branch Jail for a drug trafficking charge without posting bail — and was driving a stolen sport utility vehicle — when a Daytona Beach police officer pulled behind him on March 6, 2006. As the officer got a look at the tag from behind, Howell turned onto Nova Road without yielding to other traffic, police said. He struck motorcyclist Jay Fife in the intersection and kept going. Howell was caught after he fled, according to court records and police. Fife, an active rock climber and athlete, now lives in Arizona, where he attends nursing school. The 34-year-old Seattle native showed Circuit Judge William Parsons the prosthetic leg he wears and asked for a sentence that would protect others from harm. “My life isn’t over,” he said later.Six weeks before he slammed into Fife, Howell was released in error from the jail for time served after he entered a plea in a drug possession case, even though he had the open trafficking charge and should have been held on $150,000 bail, said his attorney, Michael Lambert. “In my opinion, I would say they are responsible,” he said later. “It’s unclear as to why Mr. Howell was released without posting bond,” court spokeswoman Molly Justice said. —- Jay Stapleton –from Joe Franks SPONSORS GRILL, THRILL AND DISTILL, AND ALMOST EVERYTHING IN BETWEEEN, TO LEND SUPPORT AND BRING NEW EXPERIENCESTO RALLY GOERS–STURGIS, S.D. – When you’re producing almost any major event, one of the important components is a category called sponsorship. Why is it important? Well, to be honest, it’s what helps “foot the bill”, so to speak. “In the case of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, corporate sponsors bring well in excess of $300,000 annually in cash, along with nearly the same amount in in-kind contributions, all of which are used to off-set the expense incurred in hosting the Rally for our 500,000-plus guests each year. More importantly, sponsors bring a whole new dimension to the Rally,” according to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally’s sponsorship agent, Ronda Gusinsky, President of OutSource Solutions, Inc. So, what is sponsorship? Here’s an example. Let’s say that you’re a stock car racing fan and you’re asked to name your favorite driver. Dollars to donuts, my guess is that you’d quickly name your favorite driver, followed by the number and “brand” prominently displayed on the car he drives. That “branding” is sponsorship. Sponsorship is essentially a cash fee or in-kind contribution paid to a property in return for access to the commercial potential associated with that property. Simply put, it’s “relationship marketing”, a partnership is formed between a corporation and event, like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, that provides the corporation with opportunities to create awareness, increase brand loyalty, drive sales, showcase products, etc. In return, the event receives benefits such as funding, product or services. “And, if done correctly, the relationship itself grows in a mutually beneficial way for both entities,” Gusinsky adds. “We have about a dozen and a half national and regional brands as corporate partners of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. ASE, Ford Motor Company and Harley-Davidson Motor Company were on board for the 60th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 2000. Joining in 2001 were Jack Daniel’s and Pierce/Medtec. In 2002, Snap-on came on board. In 2003, local Sturgis business, Tom’s T’s. In 2004, GEICO Motorcycle, Coca-Cola and Budweiser. Da Bus, Ultra Wheel Company and South Dakota Pork Producers Council – Pork. The Other White Meat – came in 2005, followed by SONY Electronics in 2006. And, this year, we are pleased to welcome Alltel Wireless, the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building and PrairieWave Communications, our local media partner, to this prestigious slate. These are some of the most recognized brands in the world, and we’re very pleased that they have chosen to make an investment in the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally,” Gusinsky continued. In addition to sponsorship fees, the sponsors also bring their own “brand” of unique and interesting entertainment and activities to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. For instance, this year, Jack Daniel’s is hitting the road to Sturgis with its new exhibit in tow. According to Dave Stang, Director of Sponsorships, “Seeing how we make our award winning Tennessee whiskey is always fun, but this year we’ve added a new area that captures some cool, unique pieces of the distillery. Hey,
We’re getting damn close to shipping all our components off to paint. Of course there’s always a couple of critical chunks hanging out there in the wind, like the engine and front end. We are proud to announce that Custom Chrome has stepped up to be a Platinum 5-Ball Racing sponsor.
I’m sure anyone who has ever built a bike faces those nagging obstacles of missing parts. I feel so fortunate to have the industry step up to assist us with the Worlds Fastest Panhead effort, but the pressure’s on. This bastard better be fast as grease lightning. Wish we had the time to slip her into a wind tunnel. Watch for another report in the next week.
Let’s get with the program. The shop awaits the team:
SPEAKING OF BONNEVILLE ENGINE–Still waiting on STD components. It’s been six weeks. Can’t make a living like that. Should be finished with the heads, pistons and cylinders today. Flywheels are modified and Carrillo rods are ready, shaped and waiting to be balanced. We got creative with the NOS nozzles and vacuum retard fittings. Don’t hang too much off the top motormount so we can service the nozzles. We mounted the nozzles to the heads and not the intake manifold.

A RACE-INSPIRED SHIFT DRUMFOR OLD SKOOL HAND-SHIFT / FOOT-CLUTCH BIKE?–HASLETT, MI – APRIL 28, 2006With the bobber/old-skool craze in full effect, you’re probably seeing a lot of bikes with foot operated clutches and jockey shift transmissions. This hardcore style of riding is cool and having clean ape hangers with no hand levers is super clean looking. But make no mistake; it is harder to ride one of these pre-WWII setups than it may appear in the magazines.
The challenge are those final crucial moments as you roll up to the stoplight in front of the local Tavern with Suzie goo-goo pants checking you out curbside. In those final moments you have to find neutral and release the clutch so you can plant your left foot on the ground. Your right foot is busy with the rear brake duty bringing you to a stop. You don’t run a front brake because that’s not cool. What they don’t tell you is that finding neutral is a crapshoot with bad odds because most jockey shift linkages have a lever ratio many times that of its modern foot shift cousin. English translation: big lever ratios desensitize the feel of the detents in the transmission and make it almost impossible to feel the half-detent associated with finding neutral.
BAKER has a little trick to prevent you from looking like an old skool fool: the N1 shift drum. Originally developed for drag racers, the N1 shift pattern (Neutral-1-2-3-4-5-6) was designed to prevent false neutrals between 1st and 2nd by positioning neutral under 1st. This drag racer trick also eliminates all room for error in finding neutral on a jockey shift bike. As you roll up to the stoplight you tap all the way down with your left hand and you are guaranteed neutral because it is the last stop on the shift pattern.
Little Suzie notices your skill in negotiating your minimally equipped bobber to a seamless stop and decides to hop on and leave her boyfriend with hair on the bottom of his feet at the Tavern with his buddies who have real billy bob teeth. We don’t offer any products to help you from this point on.
The professionals at Choppers Inc, Detroit Bros, and Indian Larry Legacy use this unspoken trick and they love it. These guys ride jockey shift bikes and live the life style; they should know. The N1 drum is a no-cost option when a complete tranny is purchased; and makes finding neutral black and white.

LEATHER OVER-PANTS ROAD TEST COMING–Hey Bandit ………… I see your doing a road test on our Lil Joes Legendary Over-pants. …..Excellent!
About ten years ago I discovered Over-pants when riding to the Annual Rock festival in Darrington, Washington.
Of course as always the weather was perfect when we took off to the festival but by the time I got within a hundred miles of my destination it hit us …a monsoon…normal rain for western Washington……. but a monsoon to me.
When I finally arrived at the festival I was soaked. I never carry rain-gear so my chaps were my salvation from the rain. As I got off my bike my legs were dry but my crotch and ass were completely soaked.
Completely embarrassed and pissed I began a search for something better without having to carry rain-gear. I vowed that day to never to wear Chaps again.
I soon found over-pants that were from Pakistan. I scotch guarded them and WA-LA ………..rain-gear and warm-gear all in one.
I always carry a pair in my saddle bag just in case mother nature doesn’t want to play nice.
Since coming on board with Lil Joes…….it’s been my desire to develop a version in the Lil Joes style and Quality………I believe we have done that!
They offer a full one piece front and a two piece back for looks and longevity.
We added a wind/rain flap over the leg zippers for looks and function.I love these over-pants ……..each pair is made to the customers waist size and length…They are “Made in the USA” and “Guaranteed for Life.”
We haven’t decided on the retail price yet but are offering them to all our friends at Bikernet at a introductory price of $254.00

HINES MAKES SECOND CONSECUTIVE FINAL ROUND APPEARANCE AND GAINS VALUABLE POINTS ON V-ROD–ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 25, 2007) – Andrew Hines is the current three-time defending champion NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle champion.
Most champions like to start the season off with a bang – or in race terms, at least a win or two. Hines started the 2007 season with two first round losses.
Then the rider of Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson V-Rod recorded two consecutive second round losses – not exactly the way a champion would like to kick off the search for a record-setting fourth consecutive championship.
That’s when the team went testing. Hines and the rest of the squad made more than 40 passes at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis in hopes of catching up with the team dominating the point standings and winner’s circle.
The testing and hard work has paid off. Hines won last weekend’s NHRA event at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., and earned a runner-up finish at Sunday’s ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. That’s two consecutive final round appearances – more of what the team has been working toward.
Hines qualified in the No. 2 position with a career-best 6.910-second pass at 193.57 mph. Teammate Eddie Krawiec qualified for his first NHRA event at his home track with a 7.023 pass at 190.14, good enough for the No. 13 position.
Hines beat Paul Gast in the first round. Hines rode his V-Rod to a 6.957 pass at 189.60 to beat Gast’s 7.074 at 187.13 on his Fast by Gast Suzuki. Hines went on to beat Geno Scali in the second round with a 7.016 at 190.11 over Scali’s 7.103 at 188.52 on his Performance Machine Suzuki.
In semifinal action Hines topped Steve Johnson and the Snap-on Tools Suzuki team. Hines recorded a 6.969 at 191.13 over Johnson’s 7.045 at 189.90.
Hines fell in the final round to Craig Treble and the Team Tigue Suzuki squad. Hines came up short in his 17th career final round appearance by turning in a 7.003 at 190.48, falling to Treble’s 6.990 at 191.70.
While Hines is disappointed the team wasn’t able to score its second consecutive victory, he knows they are on the right path when it comes to seeking out success.
The next NHRA POWERade event is the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, June 28- July 1.

MAD JACK HEADED TO THE SAXON ASSEMBLY LINE–CASA GRANDE, ARIZ – June 26, 2007 – After much critical acclaim at the unveiling of the prototype in Cincinnati, Saxon Motorcycle Company has released the Mad Jack into full production. The Mad Jack is an aggressive V-Twin Streetfighter designed by master builder Gard Hollinger of L.A. County Choprods. The Mad Jack is the second production motorcycle that Gard has designed for Saxon. It will arrive at dealers in September as a 2008 model.
In 2005, Saxon unveiled the Black Crown, which quickly became one of Saxon’s best sellers. Based on its success, Saxon partnered with Gard to create a bike that would look like no other production motorcycle and be incredibly fun to ride. The result is a true statement in modern motorcycle design. Gard’s knowledge and respect for motorcycle history makes the Mad Jack a true American original.
Saxon uses a highly structured production line for final assembly of its motorcycles. In addition, numerous quality control checks and procedures are utilized and tracked in order to monitor performance trends and ensure continuous improvement.
The Mad Jack features numerous, unique “old-school modernistic” styling elements, unlike those found on any other production motorcycle. These components include: a proprietary frame, gas tank, fenders, machined aluminum strut system, LACC beehive side mounted oil filter, Moon Eyes barrel type oil tank and LACC hydraulic seat shock dampening system. In addition, each Mad Jack will be numbered and signed.

The Meaning of Life DiOro Style
By Bikernet Contributor Renegade |
Here’s the story of a young French, Spanish and Apache artist and Indian MC rider. Peter Oropeza is a man of spirit in a world of greed and quarterly reports. Through life’s peaks and valleys he’s sought meaning and direction. “It’s not about just making money,” Peter explained. “I needed a way to feed my family and my soul.”
Peter is a professionally trained artist and designer who grew up around his grandfather’s estate in Guadalupe Canyon, Mexicali. He experienced the spiritual ways of the native Indians and the deep Catholic faith. He drew and designed for cartoon publishers and apparel manufacturers such as David Segal.
He hit the top of his game in his mid 30s and lost a major account in 2000 just as his 40th birthday approached. The upheaval in his life caused him to research his roots in the Canyon of the Serpent not far from his Grandfather’s ranch. An artist looking for direction, inspiration and guidance, he sought his grandfather’s knowledge, and spiritual encouragement in the vortex of the bolder crusted mountains surrounding El Canon De Las Bivoras.
As 2001 approached and the beginning of a new millennium, his sister died and he dreamed of her during his search. Artists and writers are like that. They see beyond bottom lines and check books and find stimulation in shapes and images. Like a Bike builder who picks up an old brass doorknob and builds a bike around it, Peter started to form his own triangulated vortex as symbol of his sister, a spiritual guide towards growth and knowledge and ultimately a logo design for his new company. He told a candle maker in San Pedro about his dreams and the man made him a pyrimad candle to take to the desert canyon as a tribute to his sister.
As the calendar neared Jan. 1 2001, Peter rode his dirt bike to see his grandfather, then slipped into the night, to ride to the Canyon of the Serpents to pray, reaching out to his sister amongst the boulders with his candle in a back pack. The night contained a spiritual resonance and as he prayed in the sand by only the glow of the candle, coyotes began to yelp. He tried to protect the candle from the gusting winds with a Mexican blanket. The Coyotes neared, screeching their shrill screams in the New Years night. As he finished his prayer, the howls grew, wind roared and the sand blew like ghosts screaming of the terrible past mankind reeked on the earth during the former millennium. It creeped Peter out and he jumped on his dirt bike and headed back to his grandfather’s ranch for the safety of his family.
The next morning he returned to Snake Canyon to retrieve his sacred candle and his blanket. As if the gods attempted to bury the evils of the past in the sands of time, his items of prayer were nearly buried in canyon dust. As he lifted the blanket to shake it out, the brilliant new years desert sun lit a black silhouette of candle smoke. “I couldn’t have drawn a better profile of an Indian warrior,” Peter said.
Suddenly his life came into focus. A code emerged to represent the faith of the past and direction for the future. To Peter, the name DiOro represented his meaning of life. “Don’t let the past, the greed of explorers who discovered and destroyed much of Mexico, or the Conquistadors of Spain who killed native Indians, destroy your integrity, love or family. Maintain your values, guide your children and don’t be pulled off the highway into the arms of temptation.”
The silhouette represented the native strength. The triangle denoted his code for family, integrity and faith, and the sun represented god. He loves to ride choppers and his notion about being sucked off the road by temptation applies to the rider in all of us. “I love the open road, but I know the enticement it can bring,” Peter said. “It’s a test every time we hit the highway.”
Don’t I know what he’s talking about. My middle initial should be T for temptation. So now, with Peter’s family of Yelena, his girl, son Richie (18), Miliano (4) and Eros (just 1) at his side he’s developed DiOro clothing for riders. “I’m not selling mainstream or through distributors,” Peter said. “I sell only retail and directly to bike shops.” He produces work for Commercial Advertisements, Fashion & Motion Picture Entertaiment Industry, utilizing his talents to produce his clothing line which includes denims, T-shirts, vests, jackets and acessories. “Everything is made in the U.S.A.”
We’re going to support Peter’s growth and code. He’s got a lot of heart. Let’s watch how he does as he moves forward.–Renegade

National Coalition of Motorcyclists
CONGRESS CONSIDERS MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS MONTH For many years the National Coalition of Motorcyclists has worked toward getting May officially designated by Congress as Motorcycle Awareness Month nationwide. Although virtually every state and major municipality now issues “Motorcycle Awareness” proclamations, no such Congressional proclamation has ever been passed to bring national awareness to motorcycle safety.
During the mid-90?s the House of Representatives banned such resolutions primarily due to the costs incurred by the public to work hundreds of these special days, weeks and months through the legislative process.
The federal government did officially recognize May 2004 as National Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month, thanks to the efforts of retiring U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, a member of the NCOM Legislative Task Force whose Senate Resolution 168 was passed by unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate, but this did not provide a permanent solution.
Now, Congressman Michael Burgess of Texas has introduced House Resolution 339, a non-binding ?sense of Congress? measure that supports the goals of a ?Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month? in perpetuity. Though barred from setting aside periods on the calendar for a specific purpose or cause, HRES 339 ?supports the goals of a motorcycle safety awareness month? without officially designating such a month.
Your help is needed to get the measure enacted. Please contact your Congressional representatives and request that they support House Resolution 339, and make our federal legislators aware of motorcyclists’ overwhelming support for this effort.
COLORADO ENACTS HELMET LAW FOR YOUNG RIDERS While 30 states currently allow most adults the freedom to choose when and where to wear a helmet, only three of those states have no helmet requirement for any rider; Colorado, Iowa and Illinois.
Colorado has not had a helmet restriction since 1977, but now Colorado’s legislature has passed House Bill 1117 to require helmets for any rider under 18. The Kiddie Helmet Law was signed by Governor Bill Ritter on June 1, and the new law will go into effect on July 1, 2007.
This bill targets minors only, and adults 18 and older will still have freedom of choice. HB 1117 creates penalties of $25 to $110 for riders or passengers under 18 who fail to wear a motorcycle helmet, of which $10 would go to the Colorado traumatic brain injury trust fund.
?HB 1117 ?fixes? little-to-nothing,? said Terry Howard, State Coordinator of ABATE of Colorado, ?it is a solution in search of a problem.?
HELMET-FREE FOR A FEE Following on the heals of Governor Jennifer Granholm?s veto of a helmet law repeal bill passed by the Michigan legislature last year, a new piece of legislation has been introduced that puts a price on freedom by allowing riders to opt out of the state?s helmet requirement by paying a fee.
House Bill 4749 was recently introduced by State Rep. Barbarah Farrah (D-Southgate), and sponsored by no fewer than 60 representatives, that would allow motorcyclists the opportunity to buy their freedom for $100 per year or $200 for a three-year no-helmet permit. Supporters argue that the measure could ring up more than $25 million for the cash strapped state.
Motorcyclists could circumvent the mandatory helmet law, under the new bill, if they are 21 or older, have been licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least two years, complete a motorcycle safety course, have insurance or security of $20,000 for first-party medical benefits in the event of an accident, and purchase an endorsement for their license plate and license.
ABATE of Michigan, a group that has sought to have the 38-year-old mandatory helmet law repealed, has even claimed that the helmet law costs the state about $1.2 billion a year in tourism because cyclists go elsewhere to ride helmet-free.
Michigan is the only Great Lakes state with a helmet law, said Jim Rhoades, legislative director for ABATE, and out-of-state riders won?t visit because of the state?s current universal helmet mandate. “This helmet bill would be the strictest law that would allow adult choice,” Rhoades said.
TENNESSEE ENACTS R-O-W LEGISLATION ?I am proud to announce that HB1335 (Right of Way Violations) passed the Tennessee House today by a margin of 93-3,? exclaimed a jubilant Mike Hays, legislative director for CMT/ABATE, Inc.
The bill will go to the Governor after the Senate signs off on a minor amendment, and State Rep. Rob Briley who sponsored the House bill will ask the Governor to schedule a ceremonial bill signing event at his earliest convenience. Senator Tim Burchett sponsored the companion Senate bill, SB794.
?It will be up to the motorcyclists of Tennessee to educate those who will enforce and prosecute under this new law,? added Hays. ?Talking with your local police, prosecutors and judges is the best way to make sure the authorities use the new law where applicable.?
Meanwhile, the Tennessee General Assembly is wrapping up for the year and HB1283/SB1511, Tennessee?s helmet law modification bills, will be rolled into the 2008 legislative session. The helmet law repealer has passed the Senate and has passed the House Transportation Committee.
?When we launched the House bill, Dr. Joey Hensley, representative from Hohenwald, TN, lifetime rider and CMT/ABATE member was the prime sponsor,? explained Hays. ?But Dr. Hensley decided that there was entirely too much emphasis on the helmet and no attention paid to reducing the crashes, so he withdrew as the prime sponsor and long time supporter Representative Curry Todd of Collierville took the lead.?
Dr. Hensley has challenged the medical community to join with the motorcycling community to address issues that will lead to safer riding.
Pointing out that Tennessee?s fatality and injury rates are consistently higher than most of the 30 states that allow responsible adults the option of wearing a helmet, Rep. Todd said, “I stand strong on the rights of adults to have freedom of choice. Helmets are sold in the apparel department of dealerships, not the safety department. There is ample evidence to show that as states have repealed helmet laws, injury and fatality rates have declined. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Tennessee Legislature and the freedom loving motorcyclists of Tennessee to allow responsible adults the right to choose their riding apparel.?
DENVER TELLS BIKERS TO PIPE DOWN The Denver City Council has passed an ordinance aimed at muffling motorcycles that have been modified to make them louder, over thundering opposition from local bikers and motorcycle businesses. City Councilman Rick Garcia said he sponsored Council Bill 242 in response to mounting complaints from residents about thunderous hogs rolling through his northwest Denver districts at all hours. But bikers call the new law discriminatory.
The municipal ordinance, which passed 8-2, is the toughest noise law in the nation and will allow officers to ticket motorcyclists if a bike made after 1982 has a muffler lacking a mandatory factory U.S. Environmental Protection Agency noise certification stamp certifying that the exhaust system is in compliance, instead of testing the decibel level with a noise meter as previously required.
That means police will be able to pull over motorcycles they consider too loud, citing riders whose muffler isn’t EPA-certified, though noisy cars and trucks are still subject only to a sound-meter test, which motorcyclists say is more fair because it?s more objective.
Peter Boyles, a talk-radio host and avid biker whose show recently focused on the new ordinance, said police were “going to be able to pick and choose who they want to grab.”
Once ticketed, bikers will have two weeks to show a judge they fixed the problem to avoid a $500 initial fine. Garcia said out-of-towners could vow to never ride bikes with modified exhausts through the city again.
Some motorcycle shop owners warned they could be put out of business, and Garcia’s office was deluged with calls from across the country. Wayne “Lumpy” Ordakowski, who owns a motorcycle shop in southern Denver, said that dealers usually installed EPA-certified mufflers and most after-market shops didn’t stock them. The law jeopardizes small operators like him, he said. And the city should target bikers who make noise, not punish everyone who rides, he added.
As motorcycles soar in popularity, so do laws that restrict their sound levels. The city of Albuquerque, N.M. enacted a similar noise ordinance in 2002, but an uproar from the riding community convinced the city to switch to sound-meter testing.
TEXAS GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO TRAFFIC SENSORS During a discussion at the recent NCOM Convention regarding the spate of states enacting laws that allow riders to proceed through red lights that fail to cycle, Sputnik of the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association (TMRA-II) and member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF) told the audience that ?In Texas we decided that instead of giving bikers a legal way to proceed through a non-functioning traffic light, we?d require the state to make ?em work correctly.?
True to his word, HB 1279; ?relating to the requirement that a detector for certain traffic-actuated electric traffic-control devices register the presence of a motorcycle,? was passed and signed into law by Governor Rick Perry on May 25, 2007.
WEIRD NEWS: TERROR SCARE ENTRAPS MOTORCYCLISTS Six motorcyclists, including five students, were on a fun ride after dinner in Calcutta, India, when they were hauled off to the police station and interrogated overnight as suspected terrorists.
Their crime: stopping their motorcycles in front of the American Center as one of them received a call on his cellphone. The sight of the six, on three motorcycles, was enough for the cops manning the ?high-security? address to suspect them to be terrorists. Fearing an attack — with memories of the January 2002 strike at the site and other recent terror bombings fresh in their minds — the guards called a police patrol team that rushed to the spot.
It took a whole night?s grilling for the police to realize that the six were anything but terrorists, and they were released the next morning.
Upendra Mishra, a second-year MBA student, said that he and his friends were on their way back home after dinner at McDonald?s, and were in front of the American Center around 10.15pm when Sandip Arora, also doing his MBA, got a call on his cellphone. ?Sandip stopped his bike and took the call. We, too, stopped. Suddenly, a police team rushed to the spot and we were taken to Shakespeare Sarani police station. We told the officers that we were students, but they would not listen to us,? Upendra added.
Deputy commissioner (south) Ajoy Kumar said: ?They were talking over cellphones in front of the American Center. It was very suspicious. As a precautionary measure, they were all examined.? An officer of the police station added: ?We thought they had planted bombs nearby and were talking on the phone to trigger a blast, just as what happened in Hyderabad.?
QUOTABLE QUOTE: ?If we desire respect for the law, we must first make the law respectable.?

Now the Female Brain Cell started to Feel Alone and Scared and Yelled at the top of Her voice, “HELLO, IS ANYONE HERE?” Then she heard a faint voice from far, far away…. “We’re down heeeere” “We’re Down Heeeere.” –from Art Friedman MATT HOTCH DESIGNS HARD BRAKE LINE KIT–Fullerton, CA – June, 2007, The Matt Hotch Designs Hard Brake Line Kit helps achieve that serious custom show bike look. “I wanted my bikes to look clean and sexy,” says Matt Hotch, owner and master bike builder. “I don’t like the clutter of cables and wires hanging all over a bike. State Representative Rob Briley did a fine job of carrying the bill to success in the House while Senator Tim Burchett carried the companion Senate bill, SB794, to success. The bill will go to the Governor after the Senate signs off on a minor amendment that removes unnecessary language that was left in by mistake.Representative Briley will ask the Governor to schedule a ceremonial bill signing event at his earliest convenience. It will be up to the motorcyclists of Tennessee to educate those who will enforce and prosecute under this new law. Talking with your local police, prosecutors and judges is the best way to make sure the authorities use the new law where applicable. For further information on this and other Volunteer State legislation see the Statewatch section of NEW SOFTAIL TECH COMING FROM WOLFGANG PUBLISHINGEnclosed you’ll find 2 separate pdf files showing how they look in the book (How to Hop Up and Customize Your Harley-Davidson Softail). Parliament voted against a proposal aiming to save hundreds of lives per year on Europe’s main road network. The Directive, warmly welcomed by road users including the Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA), was aimed at providing Member States safety management procedures and guidance to ensure that safety is integrated in all phases of road planning, design, construction, operation & maintenance, and could indeed drastically reduce the number of road fatalities as well as helping meet the road safety targets set in 2001 (50% reduction of road casualties by 2010). During the last voting session of 5 June, the Transport Committee however rejected the Directive on Road Infrastructure Safety Management as a whole. Being described as “too bureaucratic” and “too costly”, the directive was eventually judged “unnecessary”!

BIKE WORKS MAG OFFICIALLY GONE-NEW HOT BAGGERS IN IT’S PLACEIt’s official, Bike Works from Primedia was shut down and Hot Baggers will take it’s place on the news stands. Now there’s two custom touring books, American Bagger and Hot Baggers. Let’s see what happens next.
THERE’S THE NEWS FIT FOR KINGS OF THE ROAD–Life is bananas and coming at us way too fast. Ya never know what will happen next, so struggle for the future, make those around you happy or fuck it all, party like hell. Just yesterday I went to my grandson’s middle school graduation with my 84-year-old mom. My son Frank met us on the edge of the field, just as a LA Sheriff pulled up. “You Bandit?” the officer said. I looked around for some other guy to point at, but I was surrounded by Hispanic kids. I was in the center of a town named Pico Rivera.
“I’ll give your mom a ride,” the officer said and cleared the law books off his passenger seat. I opened the cruiser door and she stepped in. “You guys can get in the back.”
Frank and I looked at each other, and we both turned pale. The notion that once inside we would never get out swept over us. Suddenly we were side by side in a cramped, caged police cruiser surrounded by hundreds of middle school kids and their relatives. Never a dull moment.
The officer pulled up to the grand stands, got out and opened the door for mom. We couldn’t get out of the back. We were locked in!
Okay, so I survived to deliver the news on time. We’ll do our damnest to keep Bikernet just as lively as the action around the Bikernet Headquarters. Watch for that Wolfgang Softail Tech within a week. Sin Wu is working on a piece of fiction from Allan Lowson. Laconia action will be covered by Paul Garson, plus a bobber you’ll go crazy over. We have a Booze Fighter feature on tap and a story about Hollister and the Booze Fighters. The legislative report is in from Bill Bish and Johnny Humble is scrambling to bring you a Big Dog road test and news about a limited edition K-9 model. There also the Peter Linney Girls of Bikernet and more heading your way. Hang On.
I need to write another Bonneville update and we’re planning a ride to San Francisco for the Three Bridges Run. And don’t forget to plan for Hollister. We’ll be there with Charlie Brechtel. Have a helluva weekend.
Ride Forever,

SORRY FELLAS, THIS MOTORCYCLE GARAGE IS FOR LADIES ONLY– CHICAGO (June 20, 2007) – Harley-Davidson is opening the metaphorical garage door to thousands of women interested in motorcycling. Over the past decade, women have increasingly embraced the sport of motorcycling – seeking the freedom and empowerment associated with riding solo on the open road. Women represent 10% of the U.S. motorcycle population, and nearly 12% of new Harley-Davidson purchasers are women. The Garage Party events are one way that Harley-Davidson reaches out to women to encourage them to learn more about motorcycling.
In 2006, Harley-Davidson piloted the Garage Party concept with its dealer network, and the response was so successful that the Company updated the program and recently launched a new section on the Women & Motorcycling Web site ( Women-only Garage Parties are being held at dealerships across the country. On June 14, Harley-Davidson held a Chicagoland Garage Party at the distinctive Museum of Contemporary Art Warehouse hosted by Karen Davidson, creative director of general merchandise and great-granddaughter of founder William A. Davidson. Several area dealerships supported the event, including Wild Fire Harley-Davidson, Chi-Town Harley-Davidson and Illinois Harley-Davidson. At the end of the evening, one lucky Chicago woman, Stacy Baustert, won a certificate to learn to ride through the Harley-Davidson Rider’s Edge New Rider Course ( Intimidation-Free Zone The Harley-Davidson Garage Party events provide an inviting environment for women to learn more about motorcycling and to meet other women who are interested in riding. Party guests can expect activities that will be both entertaining and informational with topics including a review of the basic motorcycle controls, how to customize a motorcycle’s ergonomics and how to choose proper riding gear. “Women ride for the same reasons as men – freedom, adventure and individuality, but many women approach the learning process in a different way,” said Leslie Prevish, product communications manager for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “Women tend to spend more time investigating the sport prior to getting involved, and many enjoy learning in a group setting. Garage Party events give women an interactive way to gather information and have fun doing it.” The Party Plan Garage Party event attendees are typically organized into small groups to get their first taste of the camaraderie that goes along with riding. Groups visit four informational stations, including: ‘Motorcycle Orientation’ to learn the basics of motorcycle controls and discover key differences between Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycle families. ‘MotorClothes’ to discover the important attributes needed in motorcycle gear. ‘Customization’ to learn how to customize a motorcycle to reflect a rider’s personal style and ergonomic needs. ‘Self-Service’ to show that just about anyone can handle the weight of a motorcycle. Between stations, women get the chance to interact with each other, and hear from women who are already living their motorcycle dreams. “Garage Party events give women a no-pressure chance to learn, socialize and ask questions,” added Karen Davidson. “We’re excited to provide events like this for women who are looking for information about getting into the sport but just aren’t sure how to do it.” For some women, learning to ride is a celebration of a new life stage and a chance to show their individuality. Others have been passengers for years and decided that now is the time to grab life by the handlebars and embrace the sense of freedom, adventure and individuality that comes with riding. Any woman who is looking to take the next step and learn more about motorcycling should contact her local dealer to find a Garage Party event taking place in her neighborhood – but space is limited, so interested women should reserve their spot early. I have contactedthe Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine theprocess for becoming an illegal alien and they referred me to you. My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S. Citizento illegal alien stems from the bill which was recently passed by theSenate and for which you voted. If my understanding of this bill’sprovisions is accurate, as an illegal alien who has been in theUnited States for five years, all I need to do to become a citizen isto pay a $2,000 fine and income taxes for three of the last fiveyears (according to Lou Dobbs they’re not forced to pay any back taxes). I know a good deal when I see one and I am anxious to get theprocess started before everyone figures it out. Simply put, those of us who have been here legally have had to payyears of taxes in return for paying a $2,000 fine. Is there any waythat I can apply to be illegal retroactively? This would yield anexcellent result for me and my family because we paid heavy taxes in2004 and 2005. Additionally, as an illegal alien I could begin using the localemergency room as my primary health care provider. Once I havestopped paying premiums for medical insurance, my accountant figuresI could save almost $10,000 a year. Another benefit in gaining illegal status would be that my daughterwould receive preferential treatment relative to her law schoolapplications, as well as “in-state” tuition rates for many collegesthroughout the United States for my son. Lastly, I understand that illegal status would relieve me of theburden of renewing my driver’s license and making those burdensomecar insurance premiums. This is very important to me given that Istill have college age children driving my car. If you would provide me with an outline of the process to becomeillegal (retroactively, if possible) and copies of the necessaryforms, I would be most appreciative. Thank you for your assistance.
