EDITOR RETURNS TO BIKERNET–Hey, I’m back. Pulled in a couple of hours ago. Was nice not dicking on a computer for a few days, and nicer oggling the hard bellies on the beach.

As expected, I rode through some light rain on the way out Saturday. It stayed with me from about 40 miles east of Raleigh until I hit the first bridge at the Alligator River. Then the sun popped out and I started peeling off rain gear and leather.

I still can’t get used to dropping $15 to fill up the tank when it used to cost $5 not long ago. Reckon those days are gone forever.

Lieutenant Governor Dennis Daugaard to Welcome Guests at 4th Annual Kids & Chrome Event–RAPID CITY, SD — The 4th Annual Kids & Chrome event Wednesday, August 6th, at the Spearfish Holiday Inn, will begin with a welcome by South Dakota Lieutenant Governor Dennis Daugaard. While the Lieutenant Governor may not make his entrance on a motorcycle, he?s certainly no stranger to the event?s important cause. As executive director of the Children?s Home Society, he is particularly familiar with the community?s outstanding commitment to the ?Kids? of Kids & Chrome.

?I?m really looking forward to this year?s Kids & Chrome event,? said Lt. Gov. Daugaard. ?We are so appreciative of the tremendous support from everyone involved with Kids & Chrome. I?m looking forward to welcoming guests from around the world and thanking them for their support, which will make a difference in the lives of children for generations to come.? Lt. Gov. Daugaard will be joined on stage by Performance Machine?s Ted Sands, the event emcee, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial Superintendent Gerard Baker, who will give the invocation.

Each year, Kids & Chrome unites motorcycle enthusiasts, industry leaders, celebrities, custom bike builders, civic leaders, and community members for an evening of festivities that benefit two important organizations. Guests socialize, bid on silent and live auction items, enjoy a gourmet meal, and best of all, provide critical funding for Children?s Home Society and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

Children?s Home Society provides a therapeutic home and school for children with emotional and behavioral issues. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, the event?s ?Chrome? beneficiary, preserves the history of motorcycling and honors the men and women who have advanced the sport and lifestyle.

SPECTRO OILS COMES TO BIKERNET–When we say ?Cruiser? we?re talking about a V-twin. Yours could be a stock Harley, a big Yamaha, or a one-off custom. It could be clean and simple or fully-decked. a complete line of Heavy Duty products engineered to deliver optimum performance and protection for Harley-Davidson and other American V-twin engines.

a full line of lubricants for V-twin metric cruisers meeting or exceeding JASO MA and all known OEM requirements.

BMW

2008-05-27 – BMW K1200GT ConversionPerfect Touring–The BMW K1200GT conversion from Motorcycle Accessory Hornig GmbH was presented for the first time at the BMW Motorcycle Mountain Days in Kaprun, Austria and the visitors loved it.

The BMW deluxe Tourer is already a very good motorbike but Hornig tried to design it unique and to improve its touring and comfort qualities as well as individualizing it for the driver.

Bonne Belle pipeside

BIKERNET IN SEARCH OF BIG NORTON TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH–I just received a report on the Bonne Belle being assembled in Richmond at Departure Bike Works. They’re rebuilding the 1940 45 flathead engine with a K-model top end for performance. We attempted, with the help of S&S, to build a separate 5-speed Sportster transmission to replace the existing 3-speed stock unit, but it wouldn’t fit. “We tried everyway but Sunday,” Lee Clemens, the boss of Departure, said, “but she wouldn’t go.”

Old Norton

We’re onto plan B and Lee suggested a tough classic Norton transmission. If you can help contact me, Bandit@bikernet.com or Lee Clemens at Departure (see banner below).

So there’s the news for this week and we’re scrambling with some heated projects. Some are still top secret, but I’m itchin’ to release the news. In the meantime hang on for Sturgis Bikernet Brouhaha event news. We now have Custom Chrome, Spectro Oils and Dupont Hot Hues as sponsors. We have a number of features headed your way from the Branson’s Military Build-off winner, Brass Balls Bobber, which will be posted this weekend to Scott Long’s Chopper Challenge scooter and South Side’s Red Cross Softail plus a Triumph bobber from Two Wheelers in Denver. More Girls of Bikernet are headed our way from Arizona and overseas, plus I need to launch a chapter of World Run in the Cantina.

Scotts bike
Scott Long’s Chopper Challenge creation.

Damn, there’s more. I’m still working with the Indian Crew to bring you a feature on their new plant on Devil’s mountain in NC. But just when you think there’s peace for Indians, another tribe scrambles the mix. We interviewed John White from Crazy Horse Engineering in the north west. He bought all the leftover Power Plus Engines and the rights to build them when the Gilroy Indian shut down. He’s now refined them and is supplying them to the public, but that’s not all. He’s poised to build another line of Indians and buy up the whole tamale if it ever comes available. I’ll bring you a complete report on his engines in the next couple of weeks.

Brasswgirl
This Brass Balls Build-Off winning feature will pop onto Bikernet in the next couple of days. It sports a V-Plus engine.

Dar at Brass Balls builds bikes with the new V-Plus 100-inch engines, and we may start building our mudflap girl bike using one of these engines and a Brass Balls frame in the very near future. Hang on for more reports.

I also need to write another chapter of Badlands, stories captivating the life and times of hardened criminals, like Rogue. He’s next on the list and I’m honored to write his story.

In the meantime it’s time to ride.

Ride Forever,

BIKERNET BUELL BLAST REPORT REVIEW–By any chance to you know the gal that wrote the article: Buell Blast For The Harley Hesitant My Solution For Intimidation. By Nyla Olsen.

I would really like to thank her for writing this. Last summer at the age of 56, I finally took the H-D Riders Edge Classes and passed (much to my amazement) in 90 degree heat. Hubby being a nice guy insisted on buying me an ’07 1200L Sportster. The power of the Sportster reminds me of trying ride a wild mustang compared to the Buell Blast I learned on.

Her article really hit the nail on the head for me. I am glad to know I’m not the only one that feels this way about all that power.

If you can let her know ……I really appreciated her taking the time to write about her experience.

SCOTT JACOBS ARTWORK

FATHER’S DAY REMINDER FROM SCOTT JACOBS–It?s about time to start thinking about what to get dad for Father?s Day. Something special from the studio might be just the thing to make dad?s day.

There are only two images in Scott?s portfolio of works which were produced in a smaller size: Shaken not Stirred and After the Ride and since Shaken was the Mother?s Day special we thought it only fitting to have After the Ride, (one of Scott best selling and most sought after works), designated as the Father?s Day Special.

This is also the first work Scott painted which did not include a motorcycle as subject and was the catalyst for the entire LIFESTYLE SERIES of images.

Here?s the deal?.After the Ride normally sells in this size (26? x 19? overall) for $750 framed but just for this coming Father?s Day it can be acquired for $495 with custom frame. Also Scott will add a second signature and personalization for dad on the back of the frame. (framed version is attached to this email) Regards, Ron 303-431-4453

Goldammer Banner

ROGER GOLDAMMER SPEAKS OUT–It is not my choice to write this at all, but I feel the need to do it? personal things should be kept personal, but when it isn?t and the information is very false..,I think people should have the opportunity to find out the truth.

Letters were sent to many people businesses and blogs, by ?people? representing Brenda Fox, in particular a person with a tag of WebMama, going by the name ?Hope,? which is not her real name. I called her place of work and they have no knowledge of her. This person refuses to discuss this matter, as is Brenda and is very unaware of the facts herself, yet is compelled to send out false info to people she does not know at all, people I work with, many of you friends.

Those of you who know me know who and what I am all about. The truth is that I have done everything in MY power to help Brenda for a very long time now, longer than the ten months ago, when I found out about her condition.

Brenda is a wonderful person, and she is up against a lot. I encourage you all to help her in any way you can, as I will continue to, but I offer and encourage any and all of you to feel free to call or e-mail me to discuss this further if you are interested in the truth? 250 764-8002

I am sorry to have to bring this up at all, I have tried to be a certain type of person my whole life, but when anyone starts to preach otherwise, I get more than offended.

Thanks for your time,

–Roger Goldammer

KING REPORT– Hey,Just returned from the shop, and they got me in and out in about half an hour. The male end of the check valve assembly had a couple of small wear/corrosion spots on it that caused the misalignment and subsequent failure. Replaced under warranty.

Something to watch out for: One of the techs told me that pranksters are sometimes messing with the QC fuel line assembly on the FI bikes. Easy to do by just pushing up on the chrome sleeve and pulling down on the valve/hose assembly.

To seat the valve, push up on the sleeve, up on the valve (you’ll hear it click into position) and release the sleeve.

TECATEGIRL

AMD OFFICIAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF CUSTOM BIKE BUILDING–Heading into its 5th anniversary year, 2008 sees the AMD Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building once again bringing together an outstanding collection of the year?s best engineered custom bikes from around the world. With entries literally spanning the globe, the event showcases some of the outstanding talent, design, ability, craftsmanship and engineering excellence that the custom motorcycle industry boasts.

Started in 2004, the inaugural World Championship was staged at Custom Chrome?s Morgan Hill, CA, headquarters dealer show. After a stint in Las Vegas in 2005, the World Championship moved to Sturgis in 2006, with a permanent move to its current Champions Park facility last year.

Located between Lazelle and 3rd Street, the World Championship venue, named Champions Hall, is an impressive 25,000 sq ft structure right in the heart of the action in downtown Sturgis. Conveniently located, Champions Hall provides visitors the opportunity to see the best engineered bikes the world?s builders have to offer, including many international bikes that will only ever be seen here in the United States for the four days of the Championship. Most builders will be on-site to answer any questions and chat at length about their ideas, inspiration and motivation behind their living, running, riding works of art.

With 4 classes of motorcycles being judged, the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building has something to offer every visitor to Champions Hall. Each class brings its own unique twist on the motorcycle industry and is the basis on which each bike is judged.

The Freestyle Class is just that, free of constraints and directive. It is, in effect, an anything goes, no holds barred collection of custom motorcycles. Any type, style, engine configuration, color, graphic or design can be entered in the Freestyle Class. The WORLD CHAMPION is chosen from this class of entries and it is here that the builders really must bring their ?A? game in order to not just win but to even place high in the order of bikes entered. It?s the cream of the crop, the best of the best, all entered into Freestyle.

The Modified Harley-Davidson Class harkens back to the days when customizers did their own work, without the benefit of aftermarket frames and engines. To be considered for the category, the motorcycle must have and be based on an original equipment Harley-Davison engine and frame. Any amount of modification is allowed but the motorcycle had to begin life as a Harley.

The Production Class sees the many production manufacturers from around the world enter their creations for not only judging against their peers but also for you to be able to shop and see the latest each company has to offer the general public. It also offers the manufacturers the opportunity to showcase the next generation of production bikes you may see on the dealer floors. The Production Class has seen entries from well known brands such as Big Dog Motorcycles, Big Bear Choppers, Swift Motorcycle Co. and Confederate Motorcycle Co. just to name a few.

Last but certainly not least, the Metric Class brings some of the innovators in using metric based parts and components to Sturgis and Champions Hall. With metric cruisers growing in popularity, this class represents the extremes that can be achieved using metric componetry. Past winners and entrants have included Jesse Rooke, Roger Goldammer and Scott Britt.

Judging at the AMD Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building is based not on a certain set of criteria but is formed on the basis of peer group review. Each builder entered into the World Championship judges the bikes of the other competitors and the votes are tallied at the end of the event. The best person to judge another bike is a builder. The competitor with the most total points wins and becomes- ?Official World Champion Custom Bike Builder? for the year.

Unique to the Championship for 2008 will be the inclusion of some very special custom motorcycles, all produced in conjunction with S&S Cycle as a part of that company?s 50th anniversary celebration held this summer. Some of the best known and most famous builders in the world have come together to produce one-of-a-kind bikes using different S&S powerplants, each holding a unique serial number from 1958 to 2007 as a tribute to the 50 years of S&S.

Visitors to Champions Hall can also visit the displays of the forward-thinking Official World Championship Partners, each of whom are committed to supporting and growing the custom motorcycle market and rewarding those whose creativity and design stand out above their builder peers. These partners include Kustomwerks, Helmet City Inc, Hot Bike Magazine, S&S Cycle, Dragonfly Roadhouse, BDL, Big Dog Motorcycles, Custom Chrome, Baker Drivetrain, Rivera Primo, Ultima, J&P Cycles, Kibblewhite, and Avon Tyres.

Champions Hall, home of the Official World Championship, is open 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Sunday 2 August through Wednesday 6 August. The new World Champion will be crowned at the exciting awards ceremonies on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.

For more information on the truly international Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building held during the 2008 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally visit www.AMDChampionship.com

POUR ME A JACK–The lovely Sin Wu was called for Jury duty and I was sequestered here at the headquarters to finalize the news. Don’t get me started, I’ll snivel all over the table. She brought me a Jack on the Rocks to reduce the pain.

It’s memorial day weekend and time to party, but don’t forget the guys who fought for our free nation. Also, don’t forget to keep up the fight. You see me mention motorcycle rights organizations often in the new. These guys spend their lives struggling to keep our lifestyle free. Find out what your local organization struggles with and support them. These guys don’t make a dime, but spend a great deal of money and time dealing with state politicians, educating voters and training new riders.

Have a helluva weekend.

2008 HARLEY’S HEROES TOUR ROLLS ACROSS AMERICA–MILWAUKEE — (May 15, 2008)–Thanks to a $1 million pledge from the Harley-Davidson Foundation, the 2008 Harley’s Heroes Tour to support the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and its Mobile Service Office program will make stops at Harley-Davidson dealerships around the country from May through November. This is the second year of the Harley’s Heroes tour. The mission of Harley’s Heroes is to provide access to benefits for all veterans and show appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our country.

The tour provides benefits counseling to veterans who have service-connected disabilities but may never have filed a benefits claim. The Mobile Service Office units will appear at various dealer events recognizing veterans and will be staffed by highly trained DAV National Service Officers, all of them wartime disabled veterans.

In 2007, the inaugural tour produced great results. More than 180 Harley-Davidson dealers hosted events serving more than 7,000 veterans.

“Harley’s Heroes continues to connect veterans to the benefits they are entitled to receive, and we are proud to join our Harley-Davidson dealers in supporting the men and women who have served our country,” said Gail Lione, President of the Harley-Davidson Foundation.

Many veterans who need the free help the DAV will provide through Harley’s Heroes are among the 1.4 million service men and women who have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to data released by the Department of Veterans Affairs, 25 percent of those veterans have already filed claims for benefits.

“In the truest sense of our mission to build better lives for disabled veterans, Harley’s Heroes will enable the DAV to reach a greater number of veterans and their families.” said Arthur H. Wilson, National Adjutant of the 1.4 million-member DAV. “Many of our youngest veterans are unaware of the benefits they have earned. Informing those veterans of their rights will be a most important task of the DAV during the 2008 Harley’s Heroes? Tour.”

CARB DECISION REGARDING ON-HIGHWAY MOTORCYCLE STANDARDS–EPA Highlight: The new standards for on-highway motorcycles will require a significant reduction in emissions to 0.8g/km of HC+NOx for the model year 2008. Because the Clean Air Act gives many states the ability to require the sale of California-certified vehicles, CARB is predicting that these new standards will most likely affect motorcycles sold in all 50 states. Contact TET for emissions testing information.

Reminder: EPA is changing the distribution system for guidance letters to manufacturers. The letters will be available only on their website for viewing and/or downloading and will not be sent out via mail or email. After attracting over 6,000 ride-in visitors last year, Twin Club has arranged, once again, to have a bridge connecting the park with the port side with an increased amount of space on the port side.

SPY PHOTOS FROM NEW SUCKER PUNCH SALLY HEADQUARTERS IN PHOENIX–I did a quick trip to PHX last week and came back with some spy photos of the SPS shop, they are hustling right now to fill orders, rumor has it they just built 12 bikes this week.

I have included pictures of Christians latest ride, a variation of the Hotrod but with an OEM Shovel motor and chopped frame. Also included a picture of a top secret project SPS was asked to do…turn a stock sporty into an SPS sporty…that’s Drew and Brando working on the finishing touches, oh yeah and after all the engine work it is close to 80 hp…notice both these bikes have SPS billet spoked wheels all cut in house…

SUCKerpunchbike

I will get you info on that next week, have a great memorial day weekend also let’s not forget what this weekend is really about not just BBQ’s and fishing…there are en and women serving their country losing their lives almost every day…I included a quick reminder about what Memorial Day is from Wikipedia, I love that site.

–Ken Conte

Memorial Day is a United States Federal Holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (observed in 2008 on May 26). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War . After World War I , it was expanded to include those who died in any war or military action.

One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500 , which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911. It is also traditionally viewed as the beginning of summer by many, since many schools are dismissed around Memorial Day.(From Wikipedia)

S&S ANNOUNCES MOBIL 1 TO BE SPONSOR OF S&S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION– LA CROSSE WI (May 20, 2008) S&S Cycle is proud to announce that Mobil 1 is the title sponsor of the S&S 50th Anniversary Celebration (www.sscycle50th.com) presented by the AMD World Championships.

S&S has endorsed Mobil 1 V-TWIN 20/50 synthetic oil as the oil to use in all S&S Proven Performance engines for the last three years now. The recommendation of Mobil 1 has built a strong relationship between the two brands and lead to a number of joint projects. The most well known of those joint projects was the construction of an S&S-built motorcycle for Jay Leno.

The bike was built to showcase the all-new S&S X-Wedge (www.x-wedge.com). Using an S&S-built muscle-bike frame, the bike showcased the blending of traditional v-twin engineering and performance riding technology. Leno loved the bike and rode it constantly upon delivery.

“ExxonMobil is proud of its relationship with S&S Cycle and is excited to sponsor their 50th Anniversary Celebration with Mobil 1 as their official oil,” said Scott Howard Americas Automotive Marketing Manager for ExxonMobil. “S&S and Mobil 1 have enjoyed a great relationship over the years, and we are excited to see what the next 50 years will bring for them.

AMD (American Motorcycle Dealer) Magazine, the driving force behind the AMD World Championship of Bike Building has assumed the role of coordinating and facilitating the judging process for the 50 bike show. With their experience in dealing in the highest quality bikes across the world, and presenting shows in many different venues, they were the logical choice to the show presenters.

Robin Bradley, owner/operator of AMD Magazine and the World Championship said, “The bikes being built for the S&S 50th will be among the best of the year, indeed of any year. S&S were rightly sensitive to the need to be able to ensure that the genius and creativity that will be on show is handled with a judging and organizational model that guarantees an independently authenticated outcome. We were therefore delighted to be asked to bring the unique perspective, experience and credential of the Official World Championship bear on this exciting one-of-a-kind opportunity for industry excellence to be honored”.

S&S50th

2008 marks the 50-year anniversary of S&S Cycle (www.sscycle.com) that will be celebrated in La Crosse, Wisconsin on June 27, 28 and 29. The company started in 1958 in Blue Island, Illinois when founder George Smith and his wife Marge wanted to own a faster motorcycle. Following a simple dream to make every motorcycle go faster, S&S grew into the leading manufacturer of performance components and engines for American v-twins. This growth lead to the relationship with Mobil 1.

BIKERNET TECH TIP OF THE WEEK– I over-filled my tranny when riding to Half Moon Bay. It didn’t leak until I got home and parked it. I drained the tranny and put in 20 ozs. Should I replace the pushrod seal? Is that enough oil, my tranny has a kicker on the front? Should I take the clutch apart and clean all the plates? Let me know your thoughts, oh master.

I barely remember that bike from the build you did awhile back. 20 oz’s sounds about right. 5 speed’s being 24 ozs max. Seal should be okay. I think you should try a double seal on the pushrod though. Drive the first seal in deeper, you should have enough area left for a second seal.

Yeah, check out the clutch plates!! I would bead blast the steel plates. Try contact cleaner on the friction plates to remove the oil. Contact cleaner leaves no residue and there is usually a can in the shop somewhere.

If the friction plates are glazed try using Red ScotchBrite and then contact cleaner. I prefer the ScotchBrite over sandpaper. I think sandpaper leaves to much grit in the fiber mat’l.

LET’S TAKE A CHURCH BREAK– An Irish man went to confession in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Father, he confessed, ‘It has been one month since my last confession. I had sex with Nookie Green twice last month.’

The priest told the sinner, ‘You are forgiven my son. Now go and say three Hail Mary’s.’

Soon thereafter, another Irish man entered the confessional. ‘Father, it has been two months since my last confession. I’ve had sex with Nookie Green twice a week for the past two months.’

This time, the priest questioned, ‘Who is this Nookie Green?’

‘A new woman in the neighborhood,’ the sinner replied.

‘Very well my son,’ sighed the priest. Now go and say ten Hail Mary’s.

At mass the next morning, as the priest prepared to deliver the sermon, a tall, voluptuous, drop-dead gorgeous redheaded woman entered the sanctuary.

The eyes of every man in the church fell upon her as she slowly sashayed up the aisle and sat down right in front of the priest. Her dress was green and very short, and she wore matching, shiny emerald-green shoes. The priest and the altar boy gasped as the woman in the green dress and matching green shoes sat with her legs spread slightly apart, but enough.

The priest turned to the altar boy and whispered, ‘Is that Nookie Green?’

The bug-eyed altar boy couldn’t believe his ears but managed to calmly reply,

‘No Father, I think it’s just a reflection from her shoes.’

Gusinsky admits that the decision to ?shift gears? was a difficult one. ?The Kids & Chrome Foundation is a very visionary and dedicated group of people who bring together this wonderfully eclectic world-wide community of motorcycle enthusiasts to support programs in the Black Hills for abused and neglected kids and to preserve the great history of motorcycling. It?s a very special and unique dual mission and it?s an honor for me to be selected as Kids & Chrome?s first Executive Director.?

?Right now, however, my focus is with my sponsorship responsibilities for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally?, Gusinsky continued. ?I definitely have my work cut out for me over the next few months, and I?ll be the first to admit that leaving the role of sponsorship agent for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and the wonderful relationships associated with that role, will be bittersweet?, she said. ?But, I also look forward to stepping in to the role of Executive Director for Kids & Chrome this fall, and to developing new and exciting opportunities to further its mission?.

Kids and chrome

Proceeds from Kids & Chrome?s annual dinner and auction, attended by over 400 motorcycle enthusiasts and industry professionals from across the US and around the globe, benefits the outreach and programs provided by two vital Black Hills non-profit organizations, Children?s Home Society of South Dakota, the ?Kids? in the foundation?s moniker, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, the ?Chrome?. In 2007, Kids & Chrome raised over $100,000 in contributions, gifting $70,000 to the Children?s Home Society and $30,000 to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

BIKENET NEWS HEADLINES–INDIAN SPECS REVEALED, BAD LEGISLATION, MOTO-JOURNALIST NEEDS HELP, MOTORCYCLE ENCYCLOPEDIA LAUNCHED, CLUBS BEING ATTACKED AS TERRORISTS, BEST SANTA MARIA SHOW TO DATE, AND J&P RAFFLES BOBBER

VLGIRL

Hey,

Here’s another wild week. There’s some controversy, which I don’t like to post and avoid like the plaque. But there’s some informative tech questions, cool new parts and wild bikes. There’s a couple of deals floating around, event updates and more.

We’ve finally nailed down the classes for the first Bikernet Brouhaha in Sturgis at Thunder Road, and several Sponsors have lined-up to assist with trophies and hearty prizes for the contestants. I have to fire up my welder and work with Kevin Bass on the five (as in 5-Ball) best of show trophies.

Let’s get to the news so you can check the classes and send me complaint letters:

STEAL THE BRASS BALLS BOBBERS MILITARY DIGGER– The Brass Balls Bobbers military Digger represents the arm services of America and you could steal it for just pennies on the dollar!

Why you ask? Because the Branson Rock Ride Remember Motorcycle Rally is auctioning it and all the build off bikes on eBay.

How can you steal it? As of this post the custom Military Digger is at $10,000. If it holds you could snag it for very little loot.

About the Rally

The Rally raises money for non-profit charities and military organizations in the Missouri region and the Ride to the Wall Foundation. The event benefits America?s Military Veteran?s, so rally organizers created a build-off that featured ?a branch of service? or a ?specific military conflict? tied-in to each bike. Those themes went into four totally different, original bikes, by four very distinct builders.

J&P CYCLES BOBBER RAFFLE–MEDFORD, NEW JERSEY ? One ticket. That?s all it took for Jim Peters of Medford, New Jersey, to win the beautiful 2007 Custom Bobber, custom built by J&P Cycles and painted by Chad Renken of Def Air Custom Paint in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Peters purchased the one raffle ticket benefiting the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa, online on Aug. 15. Ticket number 06285 turned out to be the lucky one.

Shortly after pulling his name out of the bin on Dec. 28, Museum Director Jeff Carstensen called Peters to notify him of his good fortune. Unfortunately, Carstensen could not reach Peters, so he sent him an e-mail. When Peters received the e-mail, it was 9:30 p.m. eastern time, but he called Carstensen right away. Having never won anything before, Peters was floored.

JPdrawing

I told Carstensen, ?You have got to be kidding me. I am freaking out right now.?

Peters purchased the ticket while looking at different bike raffle sites. He said he was looking for a bike and thought maybe he could win one instead of buy one. With an extra $5 handy, he purchased one ticket.

?I thought the bike was pretty cool and the money was going to a good cause.? He especially likes the retro bobber style, so thought he would try his luck.

That was in August of 2007. The ticket came in the mail and Peters posted it on his refrigerator and forgot about it. In the meantime, he purchased a 2001 Harley-Davidson Road King. By the time the weather changed, he had already logged 5,000 miles.

His new bike will be the good weather bike. ?I look at this bike as more of a hot rod,? he says. He is thrilled with his good fortune. ?Everything about the bike is everything I envisioned,? he said. ?The style and actual type of bike was something that stood out.?

The cool, retro Bobber features a Xotic Knucklehead style RevTech motor and 5-speed transmission donated by Custom Chrome. Jeff Wiley and Kody Wisner built the bike. KraftTech donated the Rigid frame. The paint is themed after a 1940s Crocker motorcycle.

The 2007 raffle was a great success. ?This raffle again exceeded our expectations. The success is based on our sponsors and their support year-in and year-out,? said John Parham, president of the museum?s board of directors.

Even though the 2007 bike has arrived at its new home in New Jersey, the 2008 raffle is underway, so everyone will get another chance to win a beautiful bike. This year?s National Motorcycle Museum raffle bike is a 2008 S&S Panhead. Custom-built by J&P Cycles and painted by Scott Takes of Underground Studios, this year?s bike is a beauty!

Story:Local Police Thwart Bad Bikers

Local law enforcement agencies teamed up Saturday in a county-wide effort to discourage what Litchfield Police Chief BJ Wilkinson called “criminal intent from coming to Litchfield and the surrounding villages and towns.”

The Sons of Silence motorcycle club had promoted its intention to sponsor a run with stops in Montgomery and Macoupin counties, Chief Wilkinson said.

WIKI MOTORCYCLE LAUNCHED–I thought you and your readers (American and metric) might want to know about and help support a new motorcycle wiki that we and a group of motorcycle enthusiasts are starting up.

www.motorcyclia.com is a free and brand new wiki for all aspects of motorcycles, motorcycling, and motorcyclists. It is open to all 2 and 3 wheelers, old and new, American and import.

The plan is for www.motorcyclia.com to expand into a wonderful and ever-growing resource for information about all aspects of motorcycling – history, tech, models, people, events, destinations, competition, etc. And it will always be free to use or add to.

A wiki is basically a free on-line encyclopedia that can be read by anyone with on-line access and created or edited by anyone who has registered, which is free and easy to do.

When I met Joe 10 years ago, I was a young journalist coming straight from France to live the American Dream. Joe helped me out. I will never forgetit.

I want to help him out now. Here is a PayPal donation I started:http://lebig.blogs.motoverte.fr/

BIKERS UNITE TO STOP BAD LEGISLATION– May has been declared Motorcycle Awareness Month by many local governments and municipalities. Many motorcycle rights activists have solicited and received proclamations from mayors, city councils, and Governors across the country declaring May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is running Public Service Announcements declaring May as NATIONAL Motorcycle Awareness Month.

In North Carolina, Governor Michael F. Easley proclaimed April 21-25 as ?MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK?. What?s up with that?

First, it isn?t even in May, second, it is only one week, third, If you insulted any other demographic of citizens by reducing from one month to one week the time allotted for the proclamation, you would hear a great uprising of voices, and fourth, given its new name, it is apparently aimed at making motorcyclists aware of opportunities to enhance the safe operation of a motorcycle through ?a combination of rider training and experience, good judgment and a knowledge of traffic laws and licensing requirements? . It gives credit to North Carolina Governor?s Highway Safety Program (GHSP), the North Carolina Motorcyclists? Education Foundation, the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program and motorcycling organizations in the promotion of motorcycle safety and awareness???and finally? it reminds and encourages other motor vehicle operators to be cautious and observe motorcycles, especially during their seasonal return to our streets and highways.

Beth Horner of the Governors Highway Safety Program said that the Governor declared May as Seatbelt Safety Awareness Month in honor of the ?CLICK IT OR TICKET? campaign?s 15th anniversary. Since they ?couldn?t make two proclamations for one month (?) they chose the week before.? (??)

Well, Gov, Thanks for the proclamation, but this is supposed to be a MONTH long campaign directed at ?other motor vehicle operators? to watch out for MOTORCYCLES. Not that there is anything wrong with learning to ride properly and legally, but that?s another issue. You can read the Governor?s proclamation at: http://www.governor .state.nc. us/Proclamation_ FullStory. asp

NEWS BRIEF–2009 INDIAN CHIEF MOTORCYCLE–Indian Motorcycle releases specifications for the 2009 Indian Chief.

Kings Mountain, NC?The long-anticipated introduction of the all-new 2009 Indian Chief motorcycle is approaching. As the launch date draws near (although it is yet to be announced), more details about the renaissance of this iconic American motorcycle brand are being revealed. This much is clear: the new Indian Motorcycle Company is taking a wholly different and measured approach to engineering, development and marketing of the new Indian Chief.

Founded in 1901, the legendary Indian brand remains America?s first motorcycle and is highly revered. Chairman Stephen Julius and President Steve Heese have orchestrated the re-launch of Indian. Under General Manager Chris Bernauer, an eleven-year veteran of Harley-Davidson, the Indian Motorcycle team has maintained a sharp focus on product development, design and engineering excellence.

?We?re very excited about the new Indian Chief which are, in every way, both true to the legacy of the Indian brand and representative of the highest level of engineering expertise? according to Mr. Bernauer. ?Indian aficionados everywhere will be pleased with these superior motorcycles which effectively blend timeless Indian design with contemporary motorcycle performance.?

For the past few years, Indian Motorcycle?s engineering staff, led by VP of Engineering Nick Glaja, have logged thousands of hours developing, evaluating and refining each and every engineering detail. Rigorous testing continues until each component has proven its durability and performance. There will be no rush to market. Mr. Glaja, also a motorcycling industry veteran, was Principal Engineer of Powertrain Technology at Harley-Davidson before joining Indian.

Mr. Glaja says ?Our goal was quite simple: to focus on the premium nature of this brand and build the finest Indian motorcycle ever. We took a ?clean sheet? approach to the engineering of this world class American legend to ensure a solid engineering platform. Benchmarks were set high and we believe our customers will be very happy.?

At the heart of the process has been an unrelenting emphasis on quality and craftsmanship. No details have been overlooked or considered too minor to be discussed and evaluated. The final assembly of each Indian Chief takes place at Kings Mountain by a team of technicians known for the passionate pursuit of their craft.

An overriding sense of reverence pervades Indian headquarters. There is an enormous sense of pride in being a part of the rebirth of Indian Motorcycle and that feeling translates into an attention to detail and genuine care for each and every component. Assembly is both loving and methodical, with obvious care taken to produce the finest Indian motorcycles the world has ever seen.

The new Indian Chief motorcycles are rightfully positioned as premium products and will be produced in limited numbers, with the focus on outstanding quality, performance and exclusivity. Limited production will ensure the highest level of quality is maintained and owners will be certain to enjoy the enduring value of an extraordinary new Indian Chief as well as true appreciation of ownership exclusivity.

The new Indian motorcycles are designed and engineered to be powerful works of art. The 2009 Indian Chief features a redesigned 105 cubic inch PowerPlus V-Twin powertrain with electronic closed loop sequential port fuel injection. A new charging system provides increased capacity for the EFI.

Engine cylinders are Nikasil plated, eliminating the need for cast-iron liners. A new crankshaft eliminates ?scissoring?. The exhaust system is a new design with integrated 3-way catalytic converter and heated oxygen sensors. All body parts are e-coated and the frame and swingarm are e-coated and powder coated for enhanced corrosion protection.

A six-speed transmission delivers power through the belt drive to 16-inch wheels out back. Stopping is achieved via Brembo 4-piston calipers, with 11.5? dual rotors up front. Standard 5.5-gallon tank helps extend cruising range. Seats are all-leather and built to exacting specifications. But specs don?t even begin to tell the story of what it?s like to ride an Indian. It?s simply awe-inspiring.

For 2009, Indian will offer four Chief models: Chief Standard, Chief Deluxe, Chief Roadmaster and Chief Vintage. As befits these limited-edition masterworks, base prices will range from $30,999 for the Standard to $31,999 for the Deluxe and $33,999 for the Roadmaster to $35,499 for the Chief Vintage. Primary differences between models are in levels of trim, seating configurations, fender design, paint combinations, and included accessories. (Individual spec sheets and images are included separately in this kit.)

The exciting reality for all motorcycle enthusiasts is that the 2009 Indian Chiefs are so much more than the sum of their parts. Each model is an integrated whole, the result of superior engineering and a reflection of achievement well beyond incremental improvement. The 2009 Indian Chiefs are all-new and a dramatic extension of the Indian Motorcycle legacy, certain to take their place in motorcycle history.

Given the ultra premium nature of the Indian Motorcycle brand, Indian will be very selective in judging the quality and number of dealers. By the end of 2008, it is expected that no more than thirty dealerships will be in place?primarily in top motorcycle markets. A new stand-alone dealership design of 10,000 square foot will be the flagship in major markets, although it is likely that these new structures will not be completed until sometime in 2009.

At present, Indian dealers are already staged for opening for Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles, with an additional twelve applications being processed. It should also be mentioned that the emotional appeal, value and power of the Indian brand will soon result in the launch and merchandising of the highest quality line of motorcycle apparel and accessories in the industry. Indian Motorcycle Apparel will launch the line this summer. Items will be available for purchase through dealerships, online at www.indianmotorcycle.com and at specialty retail stores.

In subsequent years, Indian plans to expand its dealer network to additional markets. Superior engineering, quality and performance, the incredible history and present-day cache of the Indian brand, the exclusivity factor, an obsession with customer satisfaction and a commitment to long term slow-growth and success are expected to serve Indian Motorcycle Company well into the future.

ANTI-GUN CONTROL TESTIMONY–This is a short take on the Gun Control issue going forward now in theSupreme Court, and this young woman’s poignant experience. She hashighlighted for me an important point; she’s not mad at the madman whokilled her parents, he is like a mad dog… this wasn’t about robbery or ahit, he was just crazy and there’s no diplomacy or wily negotiator who isgoing to get him to see reason.

He should be in a rubber room or on amadman’s Devil’s Island where he will be unable to injure or kill sanecitizens. Problem is judges, psychologists and parole boards can’t seem toget past the “lawyers view” that the pathological killer “has served histime and must be “set free.”

Old news

DRACONIAN FLORIDA LAWS ATTACKED–I read the article by Robert Conroy about the draconian laws in Florida. Ihave been there and will never be back. I say we not only boycott Daytonabut every biker and not just Harley riders, but everybody from dirt ridersto wannabe?s move out and take your money. Hell even cut a canal betweenFlorida and the free USA. What the hell give it to Cuba. That?s the way theyact there.

Everybody was rude and acted like they did not want you thereeven the restaurants. One of them we ate in did not bring us forks or spoonsand when I ask for them they acted like you were supposed to eat with yourfingers. When she brought them to us she just threw them on the table. Ihave traveled all over these states and Florida has got to be the mostcommunistic state I have ever been in. It was like the KGB was everywhereeven way out in the woods. You were never out of their site.

We were pulled over by a couple of under cover cops in an old Buick andthey had beards, long hair and vest. The car followed us for a while thenturned on strobes installed in the grill. We were going the speed limit, obeying all the laws I could think of, and I did not want to pull over forsomeone that looked like that. Not that I was scared, I just did not wantto get into a shootout, as the repercussions from it is a lot of Hassle. Ithought they were maybe escorting a trailer or pipe load or something. Copswere the last things I thought they were. Needless to say no matter how manytimes I changed lanes they did to, so I pulled over in a parking lot. But itleft them in the road and they copped an attitude, as if they did not haveone all ready, so I pulled up a little more.

I ask them who they were andthey flashed their badges. I ask them why they were pulling me over, since Iwas in a van (a citizens vehicle), hey my buddy was partially paralyzed andhe wanted to see Daytona. They said I had an expired sticker on my plate.Hey I am from Texas and they stopped that a long time ago and I think they, new that or maybe not, you know I don?t think they give an IQ test to cops.

But I think they just used that for an excuse. After looking at me andchecking all my papers they proceeded to go to the van. My van’s burglaralarm works off and onand would you know it, just as the cop reached for the door the alarmlocked. You should have seen the look on his face and my wife’s who thoughtI did it, and I thought she did it. We all knew, except the cops, we hadabout six or seven guns in the van, I never travel unarmed to go camping inthe woods. Maybe the guns were overkill as some of them were assault typeguns with about a dozen 30 & 40 round mags and a couple of pistols, justunder the back seat on the floorboard.

He ask if he could search my van, what was I supposed to say NO, ofcourse I said yes and explained that the alarm was broke trying my best tokeep a straightface. He looked around and we had no beer cans or earthly smells so hechecked everybody?s ID. Even thou I knew what was in the van I still gavethem a rash of shit for looking so sneaky, and I think it distracted themlong enough not to look very far. Not having beer cans or other smells mighthave helped to, and all driving records were clean so they cut us loose. After that somebody on rice rocket hit and killed an old lady. A resident noless, so needless to say the cops were shuttingit down early.

We had one more day on the hotel room paid for but we wereso paranoid by midnight we spent all night packing up and scooted out underthe cover of darkness. As we were on our way back. Way out in the woods wesaw cops one after another with people pulled over, handcuffed, strippingtheir car or bike down.

I was never so glad to cross the Texas line in my life. I think I willstick to north or west but I will never go back to that hellhole.

STUDY CLAIMS HELMET LAWS MAY SAVE LIVES, BUT NOT VERY MANY
A new study reported in the American Journal of Public Health finds that the repeal of motorcycle helmet requirements for adults has been associated with an increase in motorcycle fatalities, beyond the general increase that has been seen throughout the country in the last decade or so, although the impact they found looks pretty modest:

On average, when compared to state experience with no helmet mandate, universal helmet laws were associated with an 11.1% reduction in motorcyclist fatality rates, whereas rates in states with partial coverage statutes (applying only to riders younger than 21) were not statistically different from those with no helmet law. Furthermore, in the states in which recent repeals of universal coverage have been instituted, the motorcyclist fatality rate increased by an average of 12.2% over what would have been projected had universal coverage been maintained.

In terms of fatalities prevented each year, the effect estimated by this study is not very impressive. In 2004, for example, “an estimated 135 (or 5.8%) fewer fatalities would have occurred” in the 31 states without universal helmet laws had those states forced adult motorcyclists to wear head protection. That’s just a handful of fatalities per state each year.

?Even the undramatic results of this study may over-estimate the impact of helmet laws,? wrote Jacob Sullum in the April 1, 2008 online edition of ?reason? magazine, citing in particular that researchers did not take into consideration miles traveled.

Some anti-helmet-law activists argue that helmets, on balance, decrease motorcycle safety by making riders more reckless, making their heads heavier, or impairing their hearing and peripheral vision. According to this study, helmet laws reduce fatalities to some extent, but as Sullum points out; ?It just does not seem to be a very big effect, which is one reason opponents of these laws have been so successful at rolling them back and preventing legislators from re-imposing them.?

WORLD?S FIRST VISION ZERO MOTORCYCLE ROAD OPENS IN EUROPE
?A milestone for motorcycle safety,? said FEMA President Hans Petter Strifeldt as he officially opened the World?s First Vision Zero Road for motorcycles along RV 32 in Norway on May 7, 2008.

The motorcycle community has long expressed concerns over ?Vision Zero?, the strategy in which road authorities have envisioned how to achieve zero deaths and zero serious injuries on the roads. These concerns are due to the vision depending primarily on bans and regulations instead of adaptation of the road environment to suit all road users – motorcyclists included.

Viewed by European government officials as high-risk road users, motorcycles have been all but excluded from the Vision Zero document. The Vision Zero document has first and foremost given anti-motorcycle campaigners an opening to propose a ban on motorcycles as these, they claim, are not compatible with a Vision Zero. But today, with the opening of this motorcycle friendly road, these claims have been effectively quashed, stated the President of the Federation of European Motorcycle Associations (FEMA).

The Vision Zero Motorcycle Road is the brainchild of two passionate engineers at the regional Road Authorities, Jan Petter Lyng and Bj?rn R. Kirste, who have successfully designed the road exactly as the motorcyclists themselves recommend. It is not much that is needed to make a motorcycle-friendly road with regard to preventing injuries in case of accidents: Crash barriers fitted with a sub-rail, forgiving side terrain, well thought out placing of signposts, cutting down sight-hindering vegetation – all in all small modifications and investments that are beneficial for all road users, including bicycles and cars. The price tag for modifying these 15 kilometres of road is estimated to 630,000 euros.

?The importance of this stretch of road in the middle of Norway cannot be overrated,? said FEMA in announcing the opening. ?It is the first Vision Zero Motorcycle road, not only in Norway, not only in Europe, but in the world.? As the representative for Europe?s road riding motorcyclists, FEMA will do what it can to promote this road to other nation?s road authorities as an example of what is possible to achieve with relatively small means, FEMA President Hans Petter Strifeldt concluded.

CAR AIRBAGS CAN PROTECT MOTORCYCLISTS
Ask any motorcyclist what the most dangerous part of riding is and most of them will tell you; “People in cars that aren’t paying attention.” Not too long ago, an airbag suit was developed in an effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries to motorcycle riders. Now, Autoliv Inc., out of Sweden has developed a new airbag system for automobiles that could impact fatality numbers by reducing the impact on riders.
The system uses an airbag mounted in the A-Pillar of the car. When a front end impact is detected, the airbag will inflate, covering most of the car?s hood and some of the windshield. Studies show that many injuries and fatalities could be avoided if this simple measure was taken. In fact, the Dutch Cycling Federation estimates that over 60 lives could be saved and over 1500 serious injuries could be avoided every year by using these airbags.

The system won’t only serve motorcycle riders however, it will cover pedal bikes and pedestrians as well. Obviously these accidents will be at a much lower speed, but the impact on the hood will still be reduced by a significant amount.

No official word on where or when the system will be installed, but with so much potential, it shouldn’t take long.

ROW LEGISLATION PASSED IN MARYLANDLeather jackets mingled with pin-striped suits as motorcyclists arrived at the State House to see their driving-safety bill signed into law by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.

?The bill will impose a six-month suspension, a $1,000 fine or both on drivers who injure or kill somebody by violating road right-of-way laws,? reported the Washington Post.

Members of ABATE of Maryland have fought for the past five years to pass the legislation, but the fight became personal in 2006 after the driver of a sport utility vehicle was involved in an accident that killed their state director, Marty Schultz.

“As things would have it, we proceeded on with the bill,” said Gary R. “Pappy” Boward, chairman of ABATE of Maryland Inc. “Everyone was getting very involved legislatively, this was [Mr. Schultz’s] assignment.”

?Pappy? told the Post that many bikers were disappointed when the person who struck Mr. Schultz received a minimal fine – less than $100 – and no other penalty.

The right-of-way bill passed the House and Senate unanimously this year, and had the support of Maryland?s Motor Vehicle Administration. The bill applies to all vehicles, but the motorcyclists advocated for it because bikes are tough to see at intersections.

The MVA reported 17,312 “failure-to-yield” accidents in 2006, resulting in 81 deaths and 8,015 injuries.

BIKERS BANNED FROM ATLANTA HOT SPOT
Metro Atlanta motorcyclists have been banned from Atlantic Station, a popular dining and retail district that no longer allows riders to drive through or park there.

Atlantic Station officials say they took action after facing ongoing problems. “They continually don’t abide by the code of conduct down here, continually rev their engines really loud,” said Brian Leary of Atlantic Station in a television interview with Fox 5.

Atlantic Station started telling motorcyclists about the change last month and will soon post signs and start ticketing violators. “I know it’s tough. We do definitely apologize to the motorcycle owners and riders but in the meantime we are making the change,” said Leary.

AUSTRALIA TO OUTLAW ?BIKIES?
Police soon will have the power to “squash” bikie gangs and force them to move elsewhere after the Government’s controversial anti-bikie legislation recently passed through Parliament.

Police Minister Paul Holloway said SA (South Australia) was on the verge of having the nation’s and perhaps the world’s toughest anti-bikie laws. “These are the laws that police have asked for and, finally, we are able to ensure police have exactly what they need to take on these criminal bikie gangs,” he said.

When the laws are gazetted, it will be illegal for anyone to associate with known bikies six or more times a year. Bikies also will be banned from specific locations. The Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Bill 2007 also will enable Police Commissioner Mal Hyde to obtain orders from the Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, declaring bikie gangs illegal.

The Government “hoped” to have the laws in place by July 1. The legislation was criticized as draconian by other states at a March meeting of State and Federal Government ministers.

The legislation now goes back to the Lower House for final approval.

WEIRD NEWS: LAWMAKERS GO NUTS OVER FAKE TESTICLES
With hot-button issues like immigration, the environment, and the failing real estate market crowding the “national conversation” these days, it’s nice to see a few ballsy Floridians with the cojones to take on important issues like fake testicles.

The brave Florida state Senate passed an amendment to a transportation bill that would levy a $60 fine against anyone with TruckNutz or generic-made fake testicles dangling from their rear bumpers.

Of course, some naysayers are arguing that there are more important things to legislate against than fake balls, which are harmless decorations for your truck or motorcycle for those who suffer a genital inferiority complex.

Sen. Carey Baker, who proposed the amendment, acknowledged his critics’ concerns and said that “I do have more important things to do this session. But I think this is important, too.”

That’s Billy flathead 74 in the foreground. Remember when everyone rode 74s and 80s were a big deal?

Hey,

Here’s the deal. Just returned from our ride to Half Moon Bay on a peninsula just south of San Francisco for the Legend of the Motorcycle Concourse. I thought it was located at the same austere venue as the car Concourse D’ Elegance in Pebble Beach. Half Moon Bay/Pebble Beach, what’s the difference? Just another 100 miles.

The Ride with Jeremiah, Billy Lane, Tattoo John and Christian, the boss of Sucker Punch was cool, hot and winding. We all rode kicker old bikes, except John’s rusting Evo, so we moseyed along the jagged coast at 60 mph. I’ll bring you a report in a couple of days. In the meantime let’s hit the news. Rumor has it that this Ritz Carlton event is being moved way south next year. We’ll bring you reports:

PANEL OKS REPEAL OF LA HELMET LAW– BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana should stop forcing adult motorcyclists to wear helmets, but begin requiring that new bikers undergo safety training before getting a license, a House committee voted on Tuesday.

Rep. Mert Smiley’s bill, which has Gov. Bobby Jindal’s support, would require bikers under age 18 to wear helmets, but not adults. The bill would create a mandatory training course for anyone applying for a license to operate a motorcycle.

The House Transportation committee voted 10-5 to send the bill to the House floor.

Among other things, the safety course will teach future bikers of the importance of wearing a proper helmet, instead of plastic “novelty” helmets that offer far less skull protection than authorized helmets, Smiley said. Combined with the training course, he said passage of his bill would mean the state will produce better trained and better equipped bikers.

“More people will start wearing helmets and they’ll be better educated than they are now,” said Smiley, R-Port Vincent, who is a motorcyclist.

Louisiana is one of 20 states that require all motorcyclists to wear a helmet, a statute that safety activists say saves lives in accidents.

Smiley’s bill moved forward despite opposition from James Champagne, former head of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, who mocked Smiley’s position as “tantamount to believing in the tooth fairy.”

Louisiana had a mandatory helmet law until Gov. Mike Foster, a motorcyclist, backed its repeal. The helmet law was reinstated under Gov. Kathleen Blanco.

Jindal, a Foster protege, included in his campaign for governor last year a pledge to support the law’s repeal, saying bikers should be able to decide for themselves whether to wear a helmet.

The instructional course on motorcycling would go into effect after July 1, 2009, to be taught by the Department of Public Safety.

I always find these report to be so slanted. It’s not just about freedom. Helmets cause accidents, break necks, etc. I wore a full helmet to Half Moon Bay, and twice almost pulled in front of a cars because the helmet blocked my peripheral vision and was in my mirror’s blind spot. –Bandit

HINES AND SCREAMIN? EAGLE V-ROD WIN AGAIN AT GATEWAY–It?s Two NHRA Wins in a Row for Hines; Krawiec Makes Semi-Finals.

MADISON, Ill.. (May 4, 2008) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines rode a Harley-Davidson V-Rod to his second Pro Stock Motorcycle win of the season at the 12th Annual O?Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals presented by Castrol at Gateway International Raceway. Hines defeated NitroFish/Torco Buell rider Matt Smith in the final round to take his second consecutive win of the season and the 15th of his career. Four races into the 2008 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season, Hines has appeared in three final rounds, has two wins, and leads the series by 56 points.

?Four races and three finals and two wins, it’s just a tribute to how good my team is,? said Hines. ?They like being on top and they’re giving me a motorcycle underneath me to be there a lot this year. It’s so fun right now. There’s a lot of work back at the shop for the guys and they’re just trying to dig and scrape and find anything they can to help us out. This is a perfect way to go into a month-off swing. It’s going to be fun once we get to Chicago. Everybody else in the class is going to go home and do their homework. At this point last year we went out and made 40 test runs and went out and won Chicago. We plan on doing the same thing. We’re not going to slack off any bit, we’re just going to enjoy this win right now.?

Hines qualified third for the event with a pass of 6.943 seconds, behind Chip Ellis (6.907) and Smith, who lead the field with a pass of 6.901. Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec was right behind Hines, qualifying fourth at 6.945.

Hines opened Sunday?s elimination rounds with an event-best 6.875 pass to beat Joe DeSantis, and then defeated Karen Stoffer and Ellis to reach the final. Krawiec beat Mike Berry and Angelle Sampey before losing to Smith on the starting line in the semi-final round, as both riders posted 6.965 runs down the track. In the final, Smith and Hines left the line together but Smith?s bike faltered down the track and Hines collected the win, 6.882 to 8.098. Hines has now posted 16 consecutive six-second runs.

The win by Hines and a first-round loss by Matt Guidera shuffled the points standings after four rounds in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. Hines leads with 405 points, followed by Smith with 349, and Chip Ellis with 325. Guidera, who was second coming into Gateway, drops to fourth with 296 points. Krawiec is sixth with 220 points. NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycles will race next at the Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 NHRA Nationals, June 5-8 at Route 66 Raceway, Joliet, Ill.

Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts are inspired by and built in the spirit of the raw adrenaline and power of motorcycle racing. Screamin’ Eagle Pro parts are specifically designed for race-use applications, while Screamin’ Eagle parts offer street-use performance options for the Harley-Davidson motorcycle owner.

DOUGZ CUSTOM PAINT HAS A REQUEST– The last couple of weeks we’ve had a noticeable increase in traffic here at the shop which – if they were profitable visits – I’d be saying ‘Praise God’! The problem is 90% of the increase is for no other reason than to just stop by to say Hi and to check out our progress on the 50th Anniversary bike.

We’ve been tracking this and in the last week alone we’ve had 49 separate visits and at least as many phone calls. If you consider each one of these a 10 minute interruption (which many can be well over that) it is really slowing down this build which we ALL know must be completed in 7 weeks.

Here’s what I’m asking for….

If you must stop in PLEASE make sure the reason you’re here is business related NOT simply to visit or ask questions about the build. We appreciate your interest, friendship and patronage more than you’ll ever know, and as good friends we know you’ll understand that we need to devote as much time as possible to this project – as we do with your’s when it is in our shop.

We’ll all have time to catch up during and after the 50th Anniversary celebration and I look forward to seeing you all at that event!

Thanks again for all of your support!!

News just received from Belt Drive Betty regarding the Canadian Championship of Bike Building–“To everyone involved with the 2008 Canadian Championship of Bike Building

Apparently the City of East Selkirk and the gentleman who was supposed to be running the show have had some sort of fall out and we will not be able to host the show there. So in light of this rather startling last minute change of events I am announcing that the winner of Regina ? the Western Canadian Championships, to be held this weekend May 10-11, will be representing Canada at Sturgis. See www.reginacustombikeshow.com for more details of the event.

I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused everyone, but at this late date there is nothing that can be done to salvage things. We look forward to having the Western Championships become our Canadian National Show for next year and look forward to those discussions coming up this month.

Thank you for your time and, again, I apologize.”

BIG BEAR CHOPPERS 6th ANNUAL RIDE THE MOUNTAIN RALLY IS SET FOR 2 DAYS THIS YEAR ? June 7-8, 2008.–Nearly ten thousand riders from all over the west coast rode their machines up to the top of the San Bernardino Mountains for the Big Bear Choppers? Fifth Annual Ride the Mountain Rally in June, and this year is no exception. In fact, Big Bear Choppers is stepping it up to a 2-day rally, which tells us one thing? it?s grown past its single day capabilities and expanding to better host the rush of bikers seeking a great ride and exciting, unique venue. Malcolm Smith Motorsports is the official motorsports distributor with NOS as the official energy drink of Ride the Mountain Rally.

Snow Summit Ski Resort in Big Bear Lake, CA is a perfect venue to provide everything a biker needs for his riding destination. Plenty of food and drinks is set to please more than ten thousand spectators. The bike show, presented by Baker Drivetrain, will hold some amazing show bikes. The popular poker run is set for Saturday and has players loop around the panoramic lake with the winners receiving prizes from Progressive Suspension.

Over one hundred industry vendors and custom builders will fill the venue. And performing on the Performance Machine stage is the face of Motley Crue, Vince Neil and his band headlining Sunday afternoon. It will be no doubt a summer rally pinnacle, in more ways than one, for west coast bikers.

DAMN, I HATE SENIOR CITIZEN JOKES–A Florida senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.

‘Amazing,’ he thought as he flew down I-75, pushing the pedal even more.

Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a state trooper behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph…then 110… then 120. Suddenly he thought, ‘What am I doing? I’m too old for this,’ and pulled over to await the trooper’s arrival.

Pulling in behind him, the trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked at his watch and said, ‘Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding that I’ve never heard before, I’ll let you go.’

The old gentleman paused, then said, ‘Years ago, my wife ran off with a Florida State Trooper. I thought you were bringing her back.

”Have a good day, sir,’ replied the trooper.

AMSOIL HARLEY BANNER

THE AMSIOL LUBRICATION FILES–I hope you are doing well. While many companies are experiencing decreases in sales AMSOIL is experiencing phenominal growth which has been occuring consistenly over many years, in times when the economy is doing well and when it is not doing so well. There are many reasons for this such as the fact that nobody, and I do mean nobody, makes a synthetic motor oil that outperforms AMSOIL as well as the millions of consumers that are shocked by the high cost of fuel and looking for ways to save money.

There is a shortage of fuel and we are also competing with developing countries such as Russia, China, India and others that are experiecing automotive revolutions which increase the demand and price of fuel worldwide. Fuel costs are not going to decrease to levels that we were previously accustomed to. In fact all forecasts by oil and Wall Street people talk of $150.00 per barrel fuel by this fall which could push fuel prices closer to $5.00 per gallon. Fuel Prices are Sky High- AMSOIL Synthetic Oil Saves You Money- An averageof $417-$497 Saved Per Year

Ferrari

AUSTRIAN GRAND-PRIX WINNING FERRARI 250 LM JOINS RM?S MARANELLO LINE-UP– With the countdown underway to this weekend?s much-anticipated ?Ferrari Leggenda e Passione? event, RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s, is excited to announce the inclusion of a grand-prix winning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM to the auction line-up. This ultra-desirable example will be just one of over 45 of the world?s rarest and most sought after road and race Ferraris to cross the block on Sunday 18th May at the legendary Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy. The auction will also present a series of memorabilia from the famed Jacques Swaters? Ferrari Francorchamps Collection.

London, England (May 12, 2008) ? With the final countdown well underway to Sunday?s much anticipated Ferrari Leggenda e Passione auction event in Maranello, Italy, RM Auctions is delighted to announce an important inclusion to the auction line-up ? a legendary, grand-prix winning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM.

Designed by Pininfarina, with coachwork by Scaglietti, this magnificent example, chassis no. 5845GT, was the fourth of only thirty-two 250 LMs built. The highlight of its extensive racing history occurred in 1965 when, capably driven by Jochen Rindt, s/n 5845GT claimed one of the most interesting victories for the 250 LM, taking first place at the esteemed Austrian Grand Prix.

The 1965 Austrian Grand Prix was a 200 mile race that was widely expected to be won by Mike Parkes in the Maranello Concessionaires 365 P2. With its exceptional balance and handling, Jochen Rindt was able to make the tyres (and fuel) last the full race, and without a pit stop he had a 31 second lead over Parkes when the chequered flag fell.

In September 1969, the car was shipped to Boston, Massachusetts in the US and later converted for road use. The dashboard was covered with leather, sliding windows replaced with wind-up windows, and seat belts and carpets were added. During the ensuing years, the car changed hands numerous times, during which it was, at one stage, a common sight on New York freeways, being used by its then owner for regular commutes into the city.

The car was purchased by its current owner in 2002, at which time it underwent a comprehensive restoration.

?The 250 LM is one of the most highly sought after of all Ferraris, and the example offered here is one of the best examples of the 250 LM and the first to be offered by RM Auctions since 2002,? says Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM?s European Operations in referring to s/n 5845GT.

?Eligible for the most prestigious competitions, such as the Shell/Ferrari Historic Challenge series, it is certainly one of the most desirable, exciting Ferraris in existence. Its upcoming sale presents an exclusive ownership opportunity,? he added.

Other notable highlights set to cross the block at RM?s Maranello auction this weekend include, but are not limited to: ?

A pair of rare and ultra-desirable California Spyders, in short and long wheelbase configuration ?
A 1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Europa Coupe, formerly owned by film director Roberto Rossellini and his wife, Ingrid Bergman ?
A 1951 Ferrari 340 America Coupe with a superlative racing history ?
An ultra-collectible, award-winning 1971 Ferrari GTB/4 Daytona Spyder ?
A 1999 Ferrari 333SP, one of the greatest sports racing cars to have been produced by Ferrari ?
A pair of factory F1 race cars raced by Michael Schumacher – a 1997 Ferrari F31OB and a 2000 Ferrari F1-2000 ?
Two Ferrari Enzos from the consecutive 2003 and 2004 production years ?
A special India Tour model 2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti to be sold without reserve for charity.

The event will be proudly presented by RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby?s. All of the cars attending the event will be certified by Ferrari Classiche.

Also set to cross the block on Sunday in Maranello is one of the world?s most important Ferrari memorabilia collections – the Ferrari Francorchamps Collection, to be offered directly, without reserve, from Jacques Swaters, the renowned ex Ferrari team manager and importer. Sunday?s auction marks the first time the collection has been offered to the public, presenting Ferrari aficionados a unique opportunity to purchase a part of automotive history. One of the highlights of the collection is the only four-door Ferrari ever produced ? the prototype 1980 Ferrari Pinin, which made its debut at the 1980 Turin Motor Show. A unique car, not only in its conception but also in Ferrari history, its sale is certain to attract the interest of discerning collectors worldwide.

Hogslife Announces Social Network for Harley-Davidson Riders–Social Network Allows Riders to Connect with Others Who Share Their Passion.

SAN JOSE, CALIF. May 8, 2008Hogslife today announced its new social network for American V-Twin motorcycle riders.Hogslife social network allows Harley-Davidson and custom V-Twin riders to connect and communicate with other riders across the country and around the world. Riders can communicate by sending messages, uploading pictures and videos, chatting, blogging and more.

Social networks are online communities of people who share similar interests. They have revolutionized the way people communicate and share information with one another. Social networks are traditionally web-based and use a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, and discussion groups.

?Unlike the big general social networks like MySpace and Facebook with tens of millions of users and counting, Hogslife focuses on the American V-Twin rider, said Jeff Snider, Hogslife COO. ?It?s a social network created by Harley-Davidson riders for Harley-Davidson riders. If you?re a Harley rider, Hogslife? makes it really easy to find people who share your passion.?

With Hogslife, riders share photos of bikes, events and rides, keep journals and share their interests with a growing network of mutual riding friends. Hogslife? allows users to see who knows who and how they are connected. Riders sign up at no cost and create a personal profile or website using Hogslife?s tools. Once users have signed up, they can invite friends to join their personal network. Users of Hogslife? will have the ability to describe themselves, their motorcycle, hobbies, and interests. Users can also upload pictures and write journals or blogs. In addition, users can search the Hogslife network for new friends and create connections between new friends and their extended network. There is even a HogslifeTV that covers rallies, rides, dealer events and other topics of interest for the Harley-Davidson rider community.

?I have a MySpace page, but bigger is definitely not better when it comes to finding folks who love to ride. Yes, there are bikers groups on the big social networks like MySpace, but finding people who share your interest is like finding a needle in a haystack,? said Gary Hinman, a new Hogslife member. Hogslife was launched in April of 2008 and is now the fastest growing network for American V-Twin riders. These riders, many of which had profiles on other larger social networks, have found that Hogslife? members are the people they want to communicate with. Hogslife? will be announcing more services as time goes on to stay cutting-edge in their feature set and to further support its members.

For more information on Hogslife or to become a member, contact Hogslife at www.hogslife.com or by calling 408-647-1236.

BIKERNET AND ROLLIN’ SIXES SUPPORT OUR TROOPS–I’d like to take this opportunity to Thank You for the box of shirts and hats that you sent over that arrived here in Iraq after I had already left for the states to attend a military school. I returned to Iraq this past Saturday and was told about the boxes so when I got in this morning I opened them up, sorted them by sizes and put the word out.

It wasn’t long before I was swamped with people wanting a shirt. I have a few left and I doubt they’ll be here much longer. Again, Thank You for the support and let everybody else there know how much we appreciate the shirts, hats and more importantly the support of the American people.

Girl end

THAT’S THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO PRINT–I’m biting my tongue avoiding the jinx jerk. I’ve got a couple of hot items to discuss, but the demons of desire are holding me back. When the news breaks you’ll here it on Bikernet first.

I watched the Chopper Challenge last night and was disappointed. It’s not a build-off at all. They cover one competitor an episode, no competitive edge, there’s no ride challenge and each builder is given a box of parts and I imagine most of the contestants will receive a similar mixture of parts so all the bikes will be similar. What’s up with that?

Kirk and Greg built a cool bike, but it was an all promotional Geico bike. And, as usual with these shows, there were tremendous opportunities to study tech thinking, design and fabrication, and they glazed over most aspects. Too bad.

Well, let me know what you thought. It’s always good to have our builders on Television. It’s good for the industry. And what’s good for the industry is? Fuck it. You get the picture. Watch Bikernet next week for new techs, fiction and maybe a Girl of Bikernet.
