1948 UL Chop Upgrades






This bike was built in classic form by Steve Hannah a 20-year Paughco employee and lifetime biker. The Redhead and I hauled ass to Carson City, Nevada with the briefcase, purchased, loaded and blasted back to the Black Hills of South Dakota.



I usually mess with any purchase unless it’s a restored antique. But this puppy was well built, classic and had chopper class. I took off the gas tank and extended the rear tabs. Then I took the tank to Greg Robles in Sturgis for a classic scallop paint job. I discovered he lived next door to Buck Lovell, former Hot Bike Editor and a master western and motorcycle photographer.





While Greg performed classic magic, I replaced the traditional Anderson pegs with standard Harley rubber pegs for rigid frame rider comfort. I didn’t want to mess with the classic chop styling, but I’m not a fan of fishtail straight pipes, although they looked too cool.







I considered a handmade two-into-one with a 19-inch long, 2.5-inch diameter Paughco muffler. I ordered some parts and pieces from Paughco including a chain guard. Chain guards are a must.



 
I tinkered, but struggled with the pipes. The fishtails were slip on with clamps. I loosened the clamps, but they didn’t come off.



I discovered long 5/16 bolts sticking up into the pipes, maybe to create a little back pressure. Whatever, I thought they had to come out. I was forced to make this super-long ½-inch open-end wrench.





The bike also didn’t have a front brake and fortunately, because of an AMCA gathering I met Charlie of RustyOldParts. He turned me onto an almost complete front brake system with drum, backing plate, shoes and most of the small bits.



Mike Kane introduced me to Capitol Brake and Clutch in Sacramento, CA. They mount shoes and form them to your brake drum. Mechanical brakes can work like champs with this procedure. I sent them my drum, shoes and backing plate. They blasted and cleaned the parts did their magic and returned them in less than a week for very little.







I dug through my drawers and boxes for a handlebar lever. I looked online. I found the perfect product at J&P, lever, cable and adjusting rod kit, but they were no longer in stock. I reached out to Barnett for the cable and they were coming to Sturgis for the rally and Chance and his guys make the cables right at their booth behind the magnificent Barnett rig. I stopped by and they knocked one out.



In my shit, I found a lever that matched the clutch lever on the highbars. I dug around and found the lever axle and the cable pivot post. Hell, I found three of them. Each one was slightly different from the others. Unfortunately, I lacked the lever clamp that encircled the bars and mated with the lever housing. I thought for sure I had one or two, but recently I completed two other builds, both patina Panheads. They could be long gone.





The front brake on the springer was nearly complete except for the cable clamp that swings on the brake backing plate lever and operates the cam. I reached out to Charlie again and he recently returned from Davenport with a small stash of new/old parts for his bikes and inventory.

 
He bought some handlebar levers and one had the clamp I needed. He sold me the clamp and a cable junction for the brake. I prayed the clamp would not be for 7/8s bars. It was perfect. I cleaned the 10/24 threads in the lever and found the fasteners.



I ran into one issue with the Barnet cable end for the lever. The issue was probably the lever casting. It was designed for a clutch cable with a larger diameter cable and end, but I made a shim to tighten up the fit into the lever housing, bada bing.

 
 
 

I installed the front brake and wheel, searched for a massive washer to fit between the rocker and the front brake retaining spring. I found one with the correct I.D. and O.D. which I had forever and somehow it was power coated black—amazing.



Steve painted everything that wasn’t polished or chrome, satin black, perfect. I painted the backing plate accordingly and the drum silver to sorta match the rear chromed drum. I got the drum lugs and chromed anchor bar from J&P Cycles and the anchor pin from Charlie. The front brake was nearly complete.
 
 
The front cable adjustment clamp is not correct, but it is chrome. The alignment with the adjustment tool is not perfect, but it will do. I would like to solder the end of the cable after I cut it to length. The cable is stainless and can be a pain to solder. I thought about dipping the end into liquid electrical tape to prevent fraying. I tried it out. Let me know what you think.

The brake seems to be working like a champ. Where’s my list: Mufflers, oil filter, chain guard. Okay, the mufflers arrived yesterday, but I needed to modify them and work out mounting. I’ve installed oil filters on two bikes, and Randy Cramer turned me onto an odd filter housing I’ve never seen before. It’s meant to mount to a frame rail, maybe. The fasteners are metric like motorcycle battery cable fasteners.
 
 


I grappled with mounting it, so I can still kick over the bike, not to close to pipes and not too close to other stuff, like primary chain adjustment fasteners. Finally, something surfaced and I built a bracket and it seems to work. I need to work on oil lines next and wondered if I could take these apart and use the ends. Randy Cramer, from Dakota V-Twin said, “No.” Looks like I needed to cut them.
 
  
A day later I found a spare oil line and cut off the ends, cleaned them thoroughly and smoothed the edges. I ran the oil lines and would like to re-run the feed oil line, but I’ll wait until it’s oil change time.
 
 
 
 



The new shorter Paughco Mufflers arrived and I slash cut them and mounted them. I’m still not completely happy with the mounting. I could have slipped them onto the pipes, tightened the stainless straps and called it quits, but if I wasn’t going to chrome them, I wanted to add some detail.



I was going to run two chrome straps, the the bracket became a clearance issue. Then it dawned on me to run just one strap and that sorta worked and gave the pipes extra support.



I may ride it around later today and see if the pipes are happy. The Redhead found a small can of flat black latex paint and I painted away the whitewall stripes. I bought replacement sparkplugs and a case of 60-25 oil at Dakota V-Twin. Never heard of such a thing.



I believe that leaves the chain guard. Paughco sent the oil tank mounting tab, which I will weld or braze to the guard.



I could send it back to Paughco for chrome or flat black it. I believe I have all the elements to make it work. In the meantime, she’s looking sharp and classic.

HUMAN-CAUSED Global Warming Violates The “Established Religion” Prohibitions Of The First Amendment

Do you know what I can do? I can “present the case” that the American-Government decrees regarding “human-caused global warming” is “the establishment of religion” by the government and is thus in violation of the Constitution.

I know what you’re saying, “Aren’t you a doddering delirious old man who was once a Mouseketeer with Annette and dropped from the epitome of pop culture in America down to the very bottom of it later in life by writing vulgar, borderline-felonious-crap for the early Easyriders Magazine, universally condemned as the most inept, most socially-unredeeming, most vagrant-targeted publication in American history?

Well, yeah. What’s your point. Where are you going with this. Tell you what, why don’t you pipe down for a minute and let me have my say. Write your own article if you’re so damn smart, meanwhile give it a rest, ok? And let me get-on with this. Ok? Well, I don’t hear you sayin’ nuthin’ so I guess it’s ok. Thank you. I don’t mean to be rude but really, you need to back off just a tad. Ok, ok, relax.

Where the hell was I? OH yeah: declaring the global warming edicts as the establishing of a religion. This ain’t allowed!

Amendment I

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The first ten words of this Bill of Rights thing that everyone declares is very spiffy, says, in the language vernacular of the day, that DC can’t create a fucking religion and then issue “commandments” regarding it that everyone has to fucking obey.

Ok, so here’s where this is going: “Human Caused Global Warming” is a religion. And there are commandments being issued by the creators of this religion that have to be obeyed under penalty of the usual penalties governments inflict for disobedience: confiscation, incarceration, and murder.

So, let’s define what a religion is and then we can see why Human Caused Global Warming IS one.

1: A religion is something that can’t be proved. It’s a conviction or a belief or a delusion or a whim or a suspicion or a hunch or a tale or a legend or a supposition that cannot ever be subjected to analysis, experiment, results, conclusions, findings, testing, and retesting. Human Caused Global Warming is one of these things.

2: A religion’s assertions cannot be tested for accuracy or even be tested for actually being in existence. There is no actual evidence that humans, much less gasoline in particular, are altering the climate and the effects of climate: the weather. PLUS!!!! there is no way to even hunt down any evidence of anything created by humans that would result in the clear conclusion that this action or this behavior or this particular practice was conclusively and repeatedly demonstrating on demand that it was producing something as astoundingly mammoth as an effect on the atmosphere of a planet 25,000 miles in circumference buried under a dynamic global violent meteor-vaporizing blanket of gasses 100,000 feet high both of which are being eternally blasted by so many thermonuclear explosions per second that they are creating a sphere of multi-million-degree fire nearly one million miles in diameter which if we were any closer to it we would all fucking die. The actions of you driving to work do not affect these three monstrosities. Rather these three monstrosities affect you. UNLESS you are a high priest of human-caused global warming, of course. Then you are running things. In between visits to Epstein Island.

In other words, saying that humans affect weather and climate is something straight out of voodoo land from the bowels of Tanganyika circa 25,000 BC.

3: A religion has a “powerful being” that is capable of overriding the laws of Nature, and this entity is either one that resides not on the earth but “out there” somewhere where Pelosi and Gavin Newsom live, or if he or she or it does reside on the earth it lives in the very rocks or IS the very rocks or the trees or is the globe of Earth itself, like Gaia is.

The supreme entity of a religion can also be us. Such that we are the all-powerful beings who by our powerful and divinely awesome majesty can…..control the weather. And move the stars around. These religions are referred to, at least in the Christian realm, as pagan if not satanic in that the member of the religion is also the deity of the religion, and these religions are referred to in the “secular” realm as humanistic or “enlightened.” Kabbala, Masonry, Rosicrucianism, Scientology unless I miss my guess, and most cults, all have the membership as being of deity level in abilities and performance and overall nature and capacity to do truly marvelous things, even if relentlessly unemployed.

4: Human Caused Global Warming is a religion of claimed, not-to-be-questioned, foregone actual untestable reality evident only to people in high places in politics, or adepts, as opposed to those living in the underling world like ourselves, none of whom high-placed people are meteorologists and most of whom have the scientific training and intellectual adroitness of Al Gore, Greta Thunberg and A. Ocasio-Cortez and company. Human Caused Global Warming cannot be proved or disproved by any amount of testing in that the premise exceeds all known current levels of human ability to test its accuracy on a global or even on a township scale. The entire planet would have to be the laboratory in order to test the assertion. In other words we’re powerful enough to alter earth’s climate and weather but we’re not powerful enough to prove that we’re doing it. This sort of quandary of whirling doubletalk is the kind of merry-go-round that lunatics and/or con-men operate with, both of whom routinely create religions when not just stealing hubcaps.

5: Congress, in addition to creating a religion out of – oh the irony! – thin air, is forcing the citizenry to obey the religion’s rules and edicts and commandments.

6: This (item 5) is what is known as “respecting the establishment of religion.” Ordering people to obey edicts and to follow the directives of edict-hurlers for the purpose of maintaining the behavioral norms and protocols of a religion….is unconstitutional. Not only does it violate the Bill of Rights, it violates the first fucking ten words of the Bill of Rights. Apparently, this has happened before and the Constitution Assembly Committee made that item the first no-no of the day. Tell that to the alleged “Supreme” Court.

Those meatheads are about as aware of the Constitution as they are aware that they are supposed to wear clothing under their robes. There’s a reason people want to become judges. And it’s not the prestige. It’s the absolute total groinal freedom which that robe allows. Shoes on the feet and the bottoms of pantlegs sewn onto the hem of the sith robe and it’s day after day of Sex Organ Fandango while boredly listening to applicants pleading for justice to someone sitting a-high-up a million miles away playing with himself. Those robes are there for a reason. And it’s a gross one.

So there ya have it!……the global warming bullshit all wrapped up and tied with a bright ribbon of Established Religion, all brought to your attention by a hack on Bikernet.com. I guess you’ll have a little more respect for this site now that you have used it as a guidepost to launch your own personal counterattack against the Greta Thunbergs and Gavin Newsoms of the world who are determined to send you back to pre-industrial Ur of the Chaldees, going to work on burro-back and having your air conditioner confiscated as a heretical violation of the Atmospheric Religious Brotherhood of the Annointed Sky Monitors.

So, remember: human-caused global warming is a DC-created religion, the rules of which you are required to follow, in disobedience to and with flagrant disregard for the first ten words of the Bill of Rights. Imagine what this Congress-established religion is going to do to the rest of the Bill of Rights once it gets some momentum going.

The Trike File Is Now Open

Being part of the Hamsters for 30+ years and building custom bikes, I never thought of owning a Trike. One night 10 years ago, as we were admiring all the custom one-of-a-kind bikes at Sturgis, a buddy says to me, “You know what the next big thing is going to be……. Trikes”. I’m like what? And he says, “Think about it. We are all getting older.” Well guess what… I bought a Trike.

Because of a major bike accident a few years ago, I’ve lost my ability to close or grip with my right hand. It’s become a major problem to hold up a heavy bagger, and I fell over too many times. I decided I can’t risk this anymore with my wife on the back, so I started looking at trikes to solve these issues. I still have my Chopper that I built and don’t have the same problem riding it, but I’m not packing my wife…

So bottom line, I bought a 2017 M8 Tri-Glide and I’m really starting to enjoy the benefits of three wheels on the ground. First you have to get used to not putting your feet down. Then spend time riding through some twisty roads steering the trike like a snowmobile.

It took a while to get accustomed to the unique handling of the three-wheeler, but now I travel as fast through corners as I ever did on a Harley 2- wheeler. This is a key issue. The stock trikes don’t handle well. My trike handling is quite good, because of the upgrades to the suspension. The rear OEM shocks were replaced with Legends shocks and the front end was modified with Legends gas canisters. Also, a Legend lift kit was installed which raised the rear an inch. These upgrades are vastly better than the stock setup for ride quality and handling.

When considering rear suspension on trikes, the big issue is adjustability and length of travel. The stock air ride shocks are short and when adjusted for two passengers reduces the travel significantly. Some people are using longer coil over like 13-14-inch without the lift kit with good results, but the lift kit and standard-length shocks are more the norm. Lots of forums to read up on this stuff.

I can understand why new trike guys ride ‘em for six months and sell them disillusioned. They are seeking a fun and stable alternative to 2-wheelers. If stock trikes don’t do the trick, the search continues.

I’ve been working with and dialing in my trike for months, and now it handles and rides comfortably. I might keep it. It offers a safe platform to travel two- up with lots of gear for long distance touring.

Would I prefer 2 wheels…. Of course, but not being afraid of tipping over while traveling or putting my feet down on slippery shit or gravel with my wife on the back is worth it!

We all come to a point where we have to assess our ability to ride safely and be able to continue staying in the wind. I know we all want to maintain our outlaw image but want to keep riding. Harley has done a pretty good job with these tri-glides and I’m glad to have one.

I’m planning to ride mine to Sturgis next year and have a feeling I’ll be bumping into other ex-outlaws on trikes feeling free in the wind.

McAllister to Restructure Tucker’s Sales and Marketing Function– Discusses
Strategy for Growth Based on “Powered Adventure”

Fort Worth TX – September 12, 2022 – On Friday, Tucker Powersports President and CEO Marc McAllister told company employees that he was planning to update the sales and marketing functions to create a “more focused organization” and laid out the company’s long-term strategy of becoming an “outfitter for powered, outdoor adventure.”

“Now is a natural time to review the structure of our sales and marketing functions. We need to start with strategy, and I believe that moves us to a focused sales and marketing organization operating under a strong leader,” said McAllister. He did not identify candidates for the role and he advised employees that the search was underway.

Tyler O’Hara finished second, followed by Michael Barnes on the Daytona Harley-Davidson/Hoban Brothers Racing Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle. Wyman also won the three-lap Mission King of the Baggers Challenge race on Saturday for a clean sweep of the weekend.

Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Travis Wyman led the King of the Baggers championship by three points coming into this final round. After qualifying second, Travis was in third place in the race when he crashed on the wet track and slid onto the grass. Travis managed to pick up his Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle and re-entered the race with a ground off shifter peg and pivot, showing his grit and determination by finishing the race.

O’Hara ended the season at the top of the standings with 123 points. Travis Wyman finished second with 113 points, followed by Kyle Wyman with 111 points.

“I’m happy to have had another sweep of the weekend,” said Kyle Wyman. “I think this is the first time I’ve won a race in the rain. It’s bittersweet because Travis went down, but I’d rather have him pushing and try to win a championship than settle for third. I think we were all looking forward to a real showdown race on a dry track, but anything can happen in racing. I want to thank all of our fans and everyone on the Harley-Davidson team for all of their hard work this season. I’m already looking forward to Daytona next year.”

For the season, Kyle Wyman won three races (Atlanta, Monterey and New Jersey) and had two other podium appearances. Travis Wyman had one race win (Road America) and finished second three times.

The Mission King of the Baggers series features race-prepared American V-Twin touring motorcycles. Harley-Davidson Factory Team Road Glide motorcycles are powered by modified Screamin’ Eagle Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 131 Performance Crate Engines.

INTERMOT 2022: The first motorcycling highlight of the year

Premieres, innovations, special events and test tracks are waiting for motorcycle fans

It’s the first trade fair highlight of the year for motorcycle and scooter fans from Europe and the specialized trade from all over the world: INTERMOT, the International Motorcycle, Scooter and E-Bike Fair, from 4 to 9 October 2022.

Around 500 exhibiting companies and brands from around 29 countries, including many big names, will present their new and current models and product innovations to the international specialized trade and the biker community.

In addition to motorcycles and scooters, the INTERMOT offering also encompasses accessories, clothing, parts, heritage and customizing, travel and workshop equipment. INTERMOT is organized by Koelnmesse GmbH, and the conceptual sponsor of the event is the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), based in Essen, Germany.

The two bikes were built here at our shop in Philadelphia. The chopper is a Redneck Chopper Frame that we drove from Philly to South Carolina to meet with Vince. Once we had it back in Philly, Johnny Mac then turned it into what it is today.

The blue flamed bike is another in-house build including the paint that Johnny built. It won the Sportster class of the Rats hole show a few years back in Daytona during Bikeweek.

This sort of thing – that humans control the weather – USED to be called “rain dancing.” At least when the Apaches were controlling the weather. Academically it was referred to as “paganism,” or “Pantheism” or “Animism” whereat primitive superstitious people such as lived in Ancient Persia and Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome attributed self-awareness and infallibly-wise willful motivation to plants and animals and terrain and sea and sky, and to anything else that doesn’t actually have these things.

Today these notions are mandatory as belief systems whether you ascribe to them or not. Incidentally, from an American Constitution standpoint, not that it matters, these notions violate the “establishment of religion” clause in the Bill of alleged Rights.

In fact the Constitution itself violates the establishment of religion clause and every Supreme Court Justice and Constitutional Law student in history knows that. Good luck getting them to admit it, they’d have to take a drastic cut in pay via an actual job.

Being cautious academics, the authors of the 2015 paper took some pains to point out that they hadn’t proven that CO2 can’t cause temperature to change, only that any such effect is too weak to show up in the ice core record. Which again means in plain language that if CO2 is the climate control knob today it’s a change from the past 800,000 years.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF MUFFULETTA?
Muffuletta “a thick, round deli sandwich from New Orleans” comes from the Sicilian dialect of Italian, perhaps from standard Italian muffola “mitten.” Muffola, in turn, likely comes by way of French moufle from Medieval Latin muffula “thick glove,” which appears to also be the source of camouflage. One possible source of muffula is a compound of two Germanic roots—one meaning “sleeve, something folded” (compare English moue or mow “a pouting grimace”) and the other meaning “skin” (compare English fell “the skin of an animal). Muffuletta was first recorded in English in the late 1960s, though the sandwich itself appears to date to the early 20th century.

Climate Panic Behind Energy Crisis–My testimony to U.S. Congress Today

I was delighted to be invited to testify before the United States Congress for the seventh time in two years. Below are my oral remarks. All references can be found in my full testimony, which draws on much of what I have published here on Substack over the last 18 months. To read my full testimony, please click here.

Good morning Chairwoman Maloney, Environment Subcommittee Chairman Khanna, and Ranking Member Comer, and members of the Committee. I am grateful to you for inviting my testimony.

I share this committee’s concern with climate change and misinformation. It is for that reason that I have, for more than 20 years, conducted energy analysis, worked as a journalist, and advocated for renewables, coal-to-natural gas switching, and nuclear power to reduce carbon emissions.

At the same time, I am deeply troubled by the way concern over climate change is being used to repress domestic energy production. The U.S. is failing to produce sufficient quantities of natural gas and oil for ourselves and our allies. The result is the worst energy crisis in 50 years, continuing inflation, and harm to workers and consumers in the U.S. and the Western world. Energy shortages are already resulting in rising social disorder and the toppling of governments, and they are about to get much worse.

We should do more to address climate change but in a framework that prioritizes energy abundance, reliability, and security. Climate change is real and we should seek to reduce carbon emissions. But it’s also the case that U.S. carbon emissions declined 22% between 2005 and 2020, global emissions were flat over the last decade, and weather-related disasters have declined since the beginning of this century. There is no scientific scenario for mass death from climate change. A far more immediate and dangerous threat is insufficient energy supplies due to U.S. government policies and actions aimed at reducing oil and gas production.

The Biden administration claims to be doing all it can to increase oil and natural gas production but it’s not. It has issued fewer leases for oil and gas production on federal lands than any other administration since World War II. It blocked the expansion of oil refining. It is using environmental regulations to reduce liquified natural gas production and exports. It has encouraged greater production by Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and other OPEC nations, rather than in the U.S. And its representatives continue to emphasize that their goal is to end the use of fossil fuels, including the cleanest one, natural gas, thereby undermining private sector investment.

If this committee is truly concerned about corporate profits and misinformation, then it must approach the issue fairly. The big tech companies make larger profits than big oil but have for some reason not been called to account. Nor has there been any acknowledgement that the U.S. oil and gas industry effectively subsidized American consumers to the tune of $100 billion per year for most of the last 12 years, resulting in many bankruptcies and financial losses. As for misinformation about climate change and energy, it is rife on all sides, and I question whether the demands for censorship by big tech firms are being made in good faith, or are consistent with the rights protected by the First Amendment…

MOVIE REVIEW OF THE WEEK–
Ever watch those 80s and 90s action movies? The 1993 movie “Hard Target” shows homeless veterans living out of a shopping cart. The action hero is a homeless ex-Marine who lost his job because the factory closed.

He finds periodic jobs at New Orleans’ ships but breaks the jaw of a captain because he caught the captain smuggling drugs. The union stops him from qualifying for another job there until he pays his dues.

The basic plot of the movie is similar to the 1982 Dystopian Sci-fi novel by Stephen King and 1987 Arnold Schawarznegger movie with the same name – “The Running Man”.

Only the movie “Hard Target” does not have convicts running for their life to get their freedom. The “Hard Target” movie instead shows homeless veterans targeted by rich people who pay half a million dollars for the “thrill” of a good hunt. If the homeless veteran survives, payment is only $10,000.

Sounds like a Hard Bargain rather than a Hard Target !!!

The hero is Jean-Claude Van Damme, who is saddled with the task of finding the homeless veteran-father of a girl so as to pay the union dues, get back to decent work.

“Hard Target” is not set in the future. It’s just 1993 New Orleans. Surprisingly, Stephen King’s futuristic novel “The Running Man” was set in the year “2025” and its movie version in “2019”. Wow !

Anyways, no one is kicking butt or jaws of the ones running the show like Van Damme in “Hard Target”. A businessman provides this hunting service to the rich clients around the world.

Fun to watch Van Damme, without thinking too much of the above — and most people don’t. Love those unique helicopter kicks of his.

The tagline for the movie by the marketing guys was “Don’t Hunt What You Can’t Kill”. Sounds like it speaks more about the concept of “Freedom” all humans (and animals) innately, naturally and instinctively know.

NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL MOTORISTS ASSOCIATION–Community Speed Watch: Is it Snitching or Driver Education?

Green Bay, Wisconsin Police Department recently announced that it has partnered with the Green Bay Neighborhood Associations to start a ‘Community Speed Watch.’ The department hopes that the program will bring more awareness to speeding.

Lt. Nate Allen added, “One of our number one complaints in the city of Green Bay is traffic and the way people drive. It’s just a way to get them (the Neighborhood Associations) a little more involved in our communities, another set of eyes for us.”

Another set of eyes—does this mean neighbor snitching on neighbors and the general public? Lt. Allen leads the initiative and says his officers will train neighborhood association volunteers to observe and report potential traffic violations. But the details are murky on how the volunteers will watch motorists.

Lt. Allen says that when a driver gets caught speeding, the department will send that driver (actually the car owner) a courtesy warning letter with information about the speeding infraction. The letter will list the observation’s date, time, and location and the recorded vehicle’s speed. It is not a citation but a warning letter asking for better driver compliance. Lt. Allen adds that the ‘Community Speed Watch’ does not correlate with the license plate reader cameras installed earlier this year.

Fritsch Park Neighborhood Association President Randy Griswold said that speeding was not too much of an issue in his neighborhood except on two streets with a 35 mph speed limit. At one of the intersections on the two streets, speeding is particularly dangerous for pedestrians trying to walk across the crosswalk with no pedestrian lights. Griswold added, “If we can slow this down and change this driving pattern lifestyle, even to a small degree, it would be an improvement.”

Griswold also stated that his Neighborhood Association wants to participate in the ‘Community Speed Watch.’

But questions remain:

Should community volunteers be involved in this type of community policing?

How will volunteers determine the speed of vehicles?

Will this kind of program change driving behavior with its warning letters?

Community snitching is a slippery slope to something that starts to rival other types of community surveillance that occur in authoritarian regimes. But how do you stop motorists from driving faster than they should through neighborhoods?

The NMA is against automated traffic cameras and traffic calming such as speed humps—two additional programs that cities can use to reduce speeding through neighborhoods.

Perhaps, motorists themselves need to check their speed more consistently so that community surveillance, cams, and traffic calming do not become entrenched.

VINTAGE ART DECO FOREVER–It looks like a bike a superhero would ride, doesn’t it? The bike seems like it would be a lot of fun to ride, but the 1930 Henderson Model KJ Streamline was very unsuitable and difficult to operate. This conventional motorcycle looked very similar to Triumph’s and Indian’s versions that were manufactured in the early 1900s.

That, of course, was due to these bikes being simpler to handle and cheaper to manufacture. However, looking at this bike, one may admire the refined Art Deco style. During the early stages of development, the bike’s curved panels were shaped in the same manner as the Chrysler Airflow.

VANCE & HINES to Debut Its First UTV Exhaust Systems–at Sand Sports Super Show

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE RACING AND S&S CYCLE WINS–Riding the Mission Foods, S&S Indian Challenger, O’Hara’s Consistency Through the Seven-Round MotoAmerica Series Carries Indian Motorcycle Over Rival Harley-Davidson to Reclaim Coveted Crown

Minneapolis, MN. (September 14, 2022) – This past weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Tyler O’Hara battled through rain-soaked conditions to finish second in the Main Event, earning the necessary points to capture the 2022 Mission King of the Baggers (KOTB) Championship for Indian Motorcycle Racing and S&S Cycle. This is the second KOTB Championship in three years for O’Hara and the Indian Motorcycle Racing-S&S team in the increasingly popular MotoAmerican bagger-racing class.

O’Hara’s 2022 Championship run was a picture of consistency throughout the seven-round series. The Petaluma, Calif. native captured five podium finishes over seven rounds; including a victory at the Daytona Speedway season opener, along with two fourth place finishes aboard his ever-reliable Mission Foods S&S Indian Challenger.

This year’s Championship came at the expense of Harley-Davidson Screaming Eagle rider Travis Wyman, who entered the series’ final round with a three-point lead in the Championship point race, only to see his hopes literally slip away when he crashed midway through the second lap while frantically chasing O’Hara through the rain soaked circuit in New Jersey.

It was an afternoon rainstorm that spoiled the best-laid plans for points leader Wyman and served up a golden opportunity for O’Hara and teammate Jeremy McWilliams, who both thrive in wet conditions. Starting from the fourth and fifth positions respectively, O’Hara and McWilliams jumped out to a fast start, overtaking Wyman and Vance-Hines Harley Davidson rider James Rispoli and moving into second and third position respectively coming out of turn one.

This allowed McWilliams to slow the pace for the field behind him, including Wyman, and create breathing room for O’Hara who consistently maintained pace behind race leader Kyle Wyman. With an added level of urgency thanks to McWilliams’ stifling efforts, the younger Wyman made an aggressive outside pass on McWilliams and immediately began aggressively pushing to close the gap with O‘Hara, ultimately low-siding and sliding into the infield late into the second lap.

Although he was able to get back on his bike and continue the race, Wyman fell to the back of the pack, while O’Hara stayed close behind the older Wyman brother, holding his second-place position to the finish and capturing his second KOTB Championship.

“Even though it’s one rider that earns the Championship, this was a situation where the support from Jeremy and our ability to work together made all the difference, and I could not be more grateful for his support and the tireless work of my entire Indian Motorcycle-S&S team,” said O’Hara. “Every member of this team sacrificed so much of themselves over this past year and to stand on that podium and celebrate this Championship with them is a testament to our commitment and nothing short of a dream come true. I’m so proud to reclaim the crown and the number-one plate for such an incredible and talented group of guys who put their hearts and souls into this season.”

McWilliams, a veteran road racer of Moto GP fame, joined the Indian Motorcycle-S&S factory team at the start of the 2022 season. Along with a virtually unmatched level of experience and skill that resulted in a Round Two victory at Daytona and fourth-place finish overall, McWilliams brought an invaluable wealth of knowledge to the team.

His technical input and collaboration with Indian Motorcycle-S&S engineers and mechanics throughout the season allowed the team to continually evolve, refine and improve the Indian Challenger, optimizing set ups specific to track conditions at each and every round.

RIDER SAFETY–American Roadways Are More Dangerous, Report States

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reporting that deaths among all types of motorists on America’s roadways jumped about 7 percent in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period last year. An estimated 9,560 people died in Q1, and fatalities on public streets and highways have increased every quarter since Q2 of 2020.

NHTSA stated that the first three months of 2022 saw the highest number of Q1 fatalities since 2002. Preliminary data reported by the Federal Highway Administration also estimated that the miles traveled for all motor vehicles in the first quarter increased by about 40.2 billion miles, and that the fatality rate for the first quarter of 2022 rose to 1.27 fatalities per 100 million miles.

“As we see these numbers rise, the MIC and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation have been working to raise the issue of rider safety at all levels of government,” said Scott Schloegel, senior vice president at the Government Relations Office for both associations.

The MIC’s GRO worked with congressional leaders to secure a resolution recognizing Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and worked with NHTSA and the White House to secure a letter from President Biden. The MIC Communications Department partnered with MIC member Progressive Insurance to send an email with MSF safety tips to 1.8 million motorcycle policy holders. Communications also promoted motorcycle safety on national, local-market, and Spanish-language television.

The nationally broadcast “Sunday Morning” on CBS recently led the news program with a report on PFAS – the perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals used for decades in many consumer products and a wide range of powersports products from riding gear to vehicle components.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, PFAS components break down very slowly over time, and both federal and state governments have examined the health impacts, introducing many bills to ban PFAS use. The MIC has spotlighted PFAS as a major powersports industry challenge, and has called on OEs, aftermarket companies, and riding gear manufacturers to learn about government PFAS proposals and to start looking for ways to replace PFAS in the products they sell.

According to Pew Research, in 2022, 60% of all American voters say climate change is a major threat. Among Democrats, 88% say climate is a major threat. Among Republicans, 31% say climate is a major threat, 45% say it is a minor threat, and 24% say it is not a threat at all.

Climate truth is the core Republican issue because it affects the supply and cost of our energy and food, and negatively affects our education, economy, taxes, and freedom. The climate fraud encourages citizens to believe other government lies.

Your climate belief decides your vote. If you believe there is a climate emergency, you will vote Democrat, even if you are a Republican. If you believe climate change is a fraud, you will vote Republican, even if you are a Democrat.

America’s only hope is that the Republican Party will support climate truth. The absence of a Republican challenge has allowed the Democrats to gain voters on the climate issue.

President Trump is no longer president because, in addition to the election fraud, he lost his climate debate against Biden. His debate loss disillusioned voters who were waiting for him to prove Biden is wrong about climate.

Sorry about that, but someone in this industry of outlaws needs to step up and demand scientific transparency. Too bad it’s got to be me, and I can’t just muddle along like all of our bullied leaders and just drink myself into oblivion and ignore what’s happening, because that’s what I’m supposed to do. My S&S Knucklehead engine arrived. I was too excited to concentrate, but my son asked how big it was and what kind of Horsepower I could expect. Here’s what Lori told me from S&S:
Yes, you are correct the engine is a 93″. Horsepower is 67 and torque 84 ft lbs this is approximate. Depends on the pipes you put with it.

I spoke to Steve Massicote from Paughco and he coached me on my muffler choice. I will try to get the best possible info before making my 2-into-one system. I’m sure Irish Rich will have some input.

I’ve installed an oil filter system on the ’48 Flathead, a front brake and now two shorter, 16-inch Paughco Mufflers.
 

 
 

Hopefully, next week I will adjust the clutch on the ’50 Panhead, for a final time and take it off the lift. Then we can start to make a roller out of the VL, XA, FL Knucklehead project for the winter. I’m excited. You won’t believe the footpegs I found…

NHDRO’s season of threepeats reaches its end as the Midwest’s largest motorcycle drag racing series gathers on September 16-18 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, for the Midwest Fall Nationals presented by Liguori Drag Racing.

This will be the final event of a 2022 NHDRO season that saw three race days at each and every event, maximizing racer paybacks for their travel dollar in a time of high expenses for all travellers.

That means that champions will be crowned in all classes, and with two full points races on Saturday and Sunday—anything can happen.

Defending Schnitz Racing Top Gas champ Jeremy Teasley has a 23 point lead over Jeremy England with Bradley Shellhaas another 92 back.

The defending champ is also in the lead in M2.Shocks 8.70 Quick Street, as Marty White has a commanding 76 markers on Jaden Hall, with Rashad Rowe tucked in close another 6 back.

White is also the defending Kevin Dennis Insurance Street ET champ, and is 40 points ahead of England in that class. Norwalk superstar Kevin Adams is only 10 points further back of England.

England is second in MPS Pro ET, 50 points behind Tom Klemme and 10 ahead of Tom’s brother Joe. Ceslie Shellhaas is only 10 points behind Joe and 20 ahead of Greg Mallett as this class is TIGHT!

David Beshara leads the MTC Super Comp 8.90 index championship by 25 points over Joe Klemme with Rylan Rowe another 62 points back.

Drew Nearhoof has a 61 point lead over Jim “Just a Swangin’” Swanger in Advanced Sleeve Dirty 30 9.30 index with England another 38 back.

You could say that VooDoo Grudge crowns champions every 7 seconds, and grudge racers will get their chance to win their high dollar crowns in sessions on all three days.

Friday night is Shootout time, with Schnitz Racing Top Gas Shootout, Road Course Shootout, Delay Box Shootout, No-Box Shootout, and the Shop Wars Shootout with Maximum Street Performance (MSP), Jeremy Teasley Racing (JTR), Port-Tech and more.

A stand out and rare motorcycle

AT THE NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM

1936 BSA Y13 V-Twin

If you walk into the British motorcycle display area in the National Motorcycle Museum, you’ll be met with a wide range of single and twin cylinder motorcycles. You’ll also see a few V-twin machines, Broughs and Vincents, some of the finest machines in the Museum, and in the world. But one bike that’s a stand out, and is pretty rare, especially in the States, is a BSA Y13. Based on a 500cc military spec machine, the 750cc V-twin arrived in 1936 and production ended in 1938. The right side is the most striking given the exhaust system and the bold chrome plated pushrod tubes. But here’s a little background.
