Launch Expected In 2023

Kawasaki is aiming for a smooth transition to EVs and doesn’t seem to be in a rush to make the switch

With its ICE-based motorcycles still going strong, Kawasaki has been rather slow in catching up with rivals in EV segment. The company has a long-term plan, wherein it aims to achieve a fully-electrified portfolio by 2035. It will include pure EVs as well as hybrid electric vehicles.

At INTERMOT 2022, Kawasaki has showcased a new EV prototype that appears to be of A1 specification (125 cc, 15 hp). It is the same model, as was showcased at Suzuka 8 Hours endurance racing event earlier this year in August. At the event, Kawasaki had also showcased a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Kawasaki electric two-wheelers could be launched in select markets such as US and Europe in 2023.

Kawasaki new EV prototype
Design and styling of Kawasaki EV prototype unveiled at Intermot 2022 is borrowed from Kawasaki’s Z range motorcycles. The EV prototype has a sinewy profile with aggressive front fascia, sculpted fuel tank, sharp body panels, exposed frame and split-seat design. It will be getting an all-LED setup. Riding stance seems fairly committed with low-set flat handlebar and slightly rear set foot pegs.

In terms of hardware, the EV prototype has standard telescopic forks at front and swingarm rear suspension. Alloy wheels have a trendy design and are shod with track-focused performance tyres. The bike has disc brakes at both ends. Sound note of this bike is close to the typical hum of an electric motor, as was revealed at Suzuka 8 Hours racing event.

While the EV prototype has a captivating profile, key details such as range, battery capacity, charging time, etc. are not available at this point of time. Kawasaki has done well to keep things tightly under wraps. Only the VIN information was revealed earlier, which showed that the prototype will generate 15 PS of max power. That should be good enough for some thrilling rides in an urban environment.

It is not certain if Kawasaki EV prototype will have a fixed or removable battery pack. The batteries are placed in the bike’s underbelly, encased by the frame from all sides. The battery pack should be accessible via the faux fuel tank lid.

Focus on ICE models
While it has started working on its electric and hybrid portfolio, Kawasaki has always maintained that its primary focus will be on ICE-based two-wheelers in the near future. That seems like a logical thing to do, as the company has global operations with a comprehensive range of ICE-based two-wheelers.

The capital investments involved, production platforms, human resource skilling, supply chain networks, etc. cannot be altered at short notice. Kawasaki’s 2035 target to achieve full electrification seems just right for enabling a smooth transition. The company has to ensure that its pure EVs and HEVs continue to offer the same level of performance and reliability, as associated with its current breed of ICE two-wheelers.

He’s shocked, supporters aren’t

When Jared Monroe returned to his classroom after a meeting, he was met with thunderous applause and a $100,000 check. He had to stop and take it all in.

Monroe, an automotive instructor at Columbia Area Career Center, is one of five grand prize winners of the 2022 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence. Representatives from the foundation joined Monroe’s colleagues, friends, family and students in surprising him with the award Tuesday morning in the automotive shop where he teaches.

Harbor Freight Tools for Schools is awarding $1.25 million in prizes to 20 skilled trades teachers nationwide, according to the foundation’s news release. The career center’s skilled trades program will receive $70,000 while Monroe will receive $30,000.

Marcus Hicks, an area manager at Ford who works as a facilitator between the career center and the motor company, worked to hold back tears during the presentation.

“Everything you see in this shop, from the computers to the toolboxes, he’s done this for you guys,” Hicks told Monroe’s students.

Motorcycle stunt riding is a sport involving the acrobatic maneuvering of a motorcycle and sometimes a rider. The invention of the motorcycle stunt dates back to the 1800s, with performances displayed on public roads and in private venues. Motorcycle stunt riding is not always a one-person sport, as iconic teams have been established over the years.

Common stunt riding tricks include the basic wheelie, stoppie, circle, 12 O’clock, Ape hanger, cliffhanger, burnout, hyperspin, switchback, and Christ. Modern-day stunt riders keeping the game alive and thriving include Rok Bagoros, Lee Bowers, Rafal Pasierbek, Sarah Lezito, Emilio Zamora, and Mike Jensen. While fans may be familiar with a couple of things about motorcycle stunt riding, only true daredevils know these parts of its history.

‘Tidman Strong Motorcycle Ride Fundraiser’ for corrections officer fighting for his life

A motorcycle ride Sunday raised money to support a corrections officer who is now fighting for his life.

Over 500 bikers showed up for the “Tidman Strong Motorcycle Ride Fundraiser.”

The escorted ride began at the Department of Mental Health’s Hadley Building in Westborough and ended at the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Leominster.

Matthew Tidman was beaten by an inmate at MCI-Shirley in August.​

His younger brother, Josh Tidman, organized the ride to help the officer’s family.

Josh Tidman said his brother is making progress, and the family is hoping for the best, but it’s a long road to recovery.

“A lot of people came about it, without question. I couldn’t have done this without my friends and fellow department of corrections officers who put this together,” Joshua Tidman said. “It’s unmeasured, the amount of love that’s here. The outpour of it is extremely supportive.”

The fundraiser also included live music, food, a car show and raffles.

The BTR Flat Track women took on the all-new American Flat Track venue for the Cedar Lake Short Track, the penultimate round of the season, while BTR Road Racing wrapped up the six-round championship at the Barber MotoAmerica round. In both cases, the race winners each earned their respective titles—Jaycee Jones in BTR Flat Track and Kayleigh Buyck in BTR Road Racing.

SEMA Members Gather in Support of RPM Act at Washington Rally to Save Our Racecars!

More than 100 SEMA members descended on the nation’s capital to participate in SEMA’s 2022 Washington Rally on Thursday, September 22. Industry leaders took to the halls of Congress to remind lawmakers of the cultural and economic importance of the automotive specialty-equipment industry and motorsports.

During the event, SEMA members urged Congress to pass H.R. 3281/S.2736, the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act. The bipartisan bill would protect Americans’ right to modify street vehicles into dedicated racecars and the industry’s right to sell the parts that enable racers to compete. The RPM Act currently has 132 co-sponsors in the House and 33 co-sponsors in the Senate, and the number continues to grow. Members also raised awareness for other issues facing the industry, including the REPAIR Act, harmful tariffs and zero-emissions vehicle mandates.

This year’s event marks the 16th time representatives from SEMA have held a fly-in on Capitol Hill. The event raises SEMA’s profile in Washington, D.C., and plays a pivotal role in the association’s advocacy efforts in Congress.
