BIKERNET SUNDAY POST –

Hey,

It’s Sunday, relax. Take a break, go to a swapmeet or event. Don’t feel bad about me. I’m sanding and painting kitchen cabinets while the Salt Shaker rusts in the shop. Ah, but there’s a light at the end of this dark tunnel. We are moving forward on our “World’s Fastest Indian Project.”

assalt-weapon-sketch1

Here’s our first sketch by the talented Chris Kallas. He dropped it on our doorstep and left town. I like the name and we may alter it to Assalt Weapan. Berry Wardlaw shipped the original Salt Shaker Pan Accurate Engine back to me yesterday, so I need to finish the Kitchen, so I can make her run again. Let’s hit the news:

BIKERNET HISTORY RESEARCH FINDINGS–In the 1400’s a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have “the rule of thumb”

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented. It was ruled “Gentlemen Only…Ladies Forbidden”…and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV were Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

CRO CUSTOMS REPORTS IN– Hope all is well my man! It’s been a busy summer. Lots of great riding, lots of travel. In a matter of weeks I went from South Africa, to South Dakota, nuts… I’ve been plugging away at my little alley shop in Venice, crawling distance from the bars.

The Smoke Out West was a great time. Met a lot of great folks, got a lot of riding in and wouldn’t ya know it, my blue shovel got a little plaque for a top 10 bike at the show. Gennaro from The HORSE shot some photos for an up and coming feature.

Lot’s of great shots on the site. www.crocustoms.com/events.html

The 56 FL is off to paint and hope to have it rolling for Dec. The new Tees are in. Special thanks to my good bud and famed hot rod artist John Bell for rendering a killer pinup on my bike. If you are not familiar with John’s work he is an awesome guy as well as an amazing artist. Like me, he’s done many years of visual effects work in Hollyweird on films like Jurassic Park, but his love is hot rods and bikes. Check out http://www.johnbellstudio.com/.

Finally pulled some rollers together for those ready for the winter builds. I spent some time working on something that was consistent with my style and at the same time affordable. It seems to be common now for folks to throw together a bunch of after market parts for 2k then call it a bobber, only to get all the stuff home and realize the fender looks goofy, and the stance is all whacked.

cro sancho bike

So, the rollers I offer now are all built from the ground up, fenders are shaped to fit the tires, fender struts are all one offs, front ends are chopped if need be to get the correct stance and tanks are mounted to insure a good line on the bike. In short, the rollers are cost effective, but still custom. When the customer is done with the final build, it wont look as if he walked in to the local dealer and bought the “off the shelf” bobber, it will be his/hers bike, not someone else’s. http://www.crocustoms.com/rollers.html

Look forward to the winter builds, and winter rides here in SoCal at least 🙂

AMA BANNER

LEGISLATIVE NEWS FROM THE AMA HALLS– The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is hosting a Washington, DC Ride Into Political Action seminar for motorcyclists who want to learn how to influence governmental decisions, whether in Congress or in their local communities.

The seminar, to be held February 24-27, 2007 at the Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington, DC, allows participants to meet and learn from the AMA’s Washington staff as well as other political experts. Besides learning about state and federal issues facing motorcyclists today, participants will get tips on building relationships with government agency officials and on lobbying elected officials. The instructors will also prepare participants to meet face-to-face with members of their own congressional delegations.

A registration form is available in the American Motorcyclist magazine or by contacting Sharon Smolinka at the address below. Mail the completed form to AMA, 13515 Yarmouth Drive, Pickerington, OH 43147. For more information, contact Sharon Smolinka at (614) 856-1900, ext. 1252 or by e-mail at ssmolinka@ama-cycle.org.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is intensifying efforts to support governments, particularly those in low-income and middle-income countries, to increase compulsory helmet use through a new publication, Helmets: A Road Safety Manual for Decision-Makers and Practitioners.

California has enacted a law supporting the goals of the AMA’s “Justice for All” campaign. California SB-1021, which was signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on September 30, imposes additional fines when a motorist is convicted of a traffic offense that causes “bodily injury” or “serious bodily injury” to another person. The new law also mandates that the California Driver’s Handbook and the curriculum of traffic-violator schools include information about “respecting the right-of-way of others, particularly pedestrians, bicycle riders, and motorcycle riders.” The bill becomes effective January 1, 2007.

The European Union (EU) consultation proposal to impose Daytime Running Lights (DRL) requirements for all vehicles is desperate gimmickry says The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) United Kingdom. Having scrutinized available statistical evidence on the subject MAG recognizes the reservations expressed by those carrying out that research, that there is no clear evidence that daytime lights will make a bit of difference. MAG is concerned that the European Commission has chosen to ignore the reservations expressed by the very people tasked with making these assessments. MAG is concerned on several levels including: 1. This false panacea is being given credibility because it provides the car industry with a cheap alternative to the pedestrian impact standards for car construction that had been proposed by Brussels. 2. Focusing attention on this ‘Red Herring’ distracts attention from the real causes of accidents between cars and vulnerable targets such as motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. 3. The proposal ignores the environmental damage that extra CO2 emissions will cause through increased fuel consumption. This is a certainty, while the claimed benefits of DRL are entirely speculative.

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reminds you that the all important mid-term elections are happening this month and despite the rhetoric, negative advertising, and other electioneering that seems endless – it is imperative that all motorcyclists exercise their right to vote. Close, contested elections in Florida in 2000 and in Ohio in 2004 highlighted the specific need for each and every person to vote for pro-motorcycling officials from your local city council, to your county commissioners all the way to the members of the US Congress. The future of motorcycling is in your hands and the AMA sincerely hopes you will join us on November 7, 2006 in the voting booth protecting your right to ride.

THE CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD– (CARB) officials are seeking to expand the state’s vehicle inspection and maintenance (I/M) program in part by subjecting high-mileage vehicles to annual inspections and including motorcycles for the first time. The proposal, included in a draft state plan to achieve federal pollution standards, may draw opposition from some stakeholder organizations, including the motorcycle industry and motorist associations.

The Motorcycle Industry Council said it is too early to comment on the draft proposal because member companies have not yet reviewed the draft plan. In a separate proposed rule, CARB intends to tighten new motorcycle exhaust and evaporative emissions standards by 50 percent beginning with the 2013 model year. Some of the other key draft CARB SIP rules to reduce mobile source emissions include: targeting out-of-state trucks, which account for about 25 percent of truck emissions in California; expanding the diesel truck inspection and maintenance program; requiring tug boats and other marine vessels to use shore-based electrical power when idling or docking at ports; requiring ships to use low-sulfur diesel fuel within 24 miles of shore; establishing emission limits for construction equipment fleets; and setting zero-emission equipment mandates and lower fleet-average emissions for airport ground service equipment.

BIKERNET TOKYO ROSE FILES– Well, it is with much anger and disgust that I heard (via Rush Limbaugh radio commentary) that CNN and Anderson Cooper have undoubtedly aided our enemies in broadcasting to the world the successes of terrorist sniper killing of our American troops. Although, I have long given up hope of having the leftist media do anything risky to their business in hopes of shortening the conflict, CNN and Anderson Cooper have proven beyond any doubt that risk placed on American lives to boost their agenda and falling ratings is acceptable.

My question is, how many American lives must a media company cost us before we charge them with treason. Hiding behind the strength of our constitution I fear no number would/ could be large enough to stop the liberal media agenda. CNN does not report news, they buy it, with American lives!

TOMMY THOMPSON, AVID BIKER’S RIGHTS SUPPORTER RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT– As some of you may know, I’ve been the Head Road Captain for the Tommy Thompson Governor’s Ride for all eleven years of the ride. Thompson has been a friend to bikers ever since I first met him back in the middle 1970’s when he was in the State Assembly. He went on to become governor of Wisconsin in 1986 and served for 14 years, the longest serving governor in Wisconsin.

He left Wisconsin to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services for the Bush Administration and revamped that department while dealing with biological and chemical threats from terrorist organizations, post 9/11, and assisting in modernizing the medical infrastructure and hospitals in Afghanistan.

Just last week, I was with Mr. Thompson in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, along with Sen. Dave Zien. Tommy told us then that he would soon be announcing that he would be running for President of the United States. In fact, this morning a Milwaukee radio station was making that announcement public.

Tommy Thompson began riding motorcycles at the urging of Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien. He promoted tourism in Wisconsin from the seat of a Harley- Davidson motorcycle during his early rides, while promoting business and rewarding companies for creating new jobs.

In August, 2002, Thompson was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Sturgis, South Dakota. Earlier that year, in June, he walked Vicki Roberts down the aisle when she married Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo on the top of Crazy Horse monument in South Dakota. Vicki is the Founder and Director of Accident Scene Management, Inc. and Thompson has allowed his rides to help generate funding for this worthwhile cause that helps motorcyclists.

Tommy Thompson has been a friend of motorcyclists for many years, and has signed some significant legislation in Wisconsin for ABATE of Wisconsin, including laws dealing with angle parking issues and motorcycle confiscations.

He deserves the support of motorcyclists around the country in his bid for high office. He has supported us since the helmet repeals of the 1970’s. Wouldn’t it be great to have a biker in charge of the country for a change?

crocker motor

BIKERNET TO FOLLOW CROCKER MOTORCYCLE COMPANY PROGRESS–Crocker Motorcycle Company of Toronto, Ontario signed a contract with Accurate Engineering to produce reproduction engines for the big and small tank Crocker Motorcycles. Along with the expanding line of parts the Crocker Motorcycle Company has been producing, they are now taking orders for their first production series of complete motorcycle kits planned for delivery beginning in the Spring of 2007.

Crocker has been reproducing parts since 1997 and decided in 2002 to reproduce the entire motorcycle. Through reverse engineering, they now have a complete set of over 1300 CAD/CAM drawings which will make this new motorcycle a duplicate of the original.

We are about to feature a rare 1936 Crocker, sold recently for over $175,000. It was owned by a Booze Fighter and is a rare complete restoration. Hang on. We also have the opportunity to build a Crocker engine based classic in the future.

IRAQ’S OIL INDUSTRY: GUARDING A NATIONS FUTURE– Editor’s note: Reporter Jennifer Svan spent more than a month in Kuwait and Bahrain. This is the first in a three-part series on coalition forces’ efforts to guard the oil terminals that are key to Iraq’s future.

ABOARD THE USS PHILIPPINE SEA – Rising off the southern coast of Iraq is a metal monstrosity rusted in places and nicked with bullet holes from past wars in this tense part of the world.

The Basra oil terminal churns out black gold in the Persian Gulf miles from land, representing, many say, Iraq’s hope for the future.

About 1.5 million barrels of crude oil per day are pumped via two pipelines from southern Iraq into the terminal and then onto giant commercial oil tankers at Basra.

The oil brings the country about $11,000 a second and makes up about 86 percent of its economy, according to U.S. military and coalition officials.

“If this platform were to go down ? reconstruction efforts in Iraq would really be compromised. I can’t imagine the economy surviving,” said Navy Lt. Aaron Bergman, officer in charge of Mobile Security Detachment 73, a unit from Naval Base Guam that is helping Iraqis protect Basra and the smaller Khwar Al Amaya oil terminal.

Ever since Navy SEALs secured the off-shore oil terminals in March 2003, maritime security operations in the region have ramped up to defend the terminals from terrorist attacks – such as one on April 24, 2004 – and keep the high seas safe for normal trade and transit.

About 45 U.S. and coalition ships patrol about 2.5 million square miles of international waters from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. On board is a mix of U.S. Navy, Marines and Coast Guard, and coalition personnel, led by three maritime combined task forces.

“Where we’re really focused on now in the maritime security role is trying to be sort of the neighborhood good cop on the beat,” said Navy Rear Adm. John W. Miller, deputy commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and 5th Fleet.

“That’s understanding what’s going on in the water. It’s maybe approaching a fishing vessel, giving them water ? giving them a weather report – chatting them up but not interfering with what they’re doing.”

THE END–I’ve got to grab a roller, brush and sandpaper and get to work. We are attempting a mildly distressed look using water based paints. This shit dries faster than lacquer on a tank. It covers as well as non-fat milk would. We’ve given each element a minimum of three coats of white. Now the woman mixed just the right amount of stain into a gallon of semi-gloss clear. And finally we are forced by the code of the West to give it another coat of satin clear. Good god.

Say some prayers for me. I’m going in. Until next week, mix a margarita for me. I’ll need it.
